An arrival time 1h15m in advance of departure is now expected in comparison to 30 or 40m for the PEI ferries. This seems excessively conservative, rivaling the 1h30 suggested by the airport for domestic flights, where there are several more steps to go through and more opportunities for things to go wrong. Requiring that passengers arrive that far in advance makes the math around taking the ferry vs. driving around the bay much less compelling.
Staff are fussy about this, too. Yesterday we mistakenly thought that "just" 1h was required. When we showed up with 55 minutes to spare, the walk-on passenger I dropped off was scolded by the shuttle driver. Keep in mind this passenger was not counting on occupying several square meters of a vehicle deck, just a chair, of which a fraction are typically occupied. It also only takes a couple of moments for the shuttle to drive the walk-ons from the parking lot on to the boat, so again the 1h15m cushion seems inexplicably long.
I overheard the driver sternly telling someone else that the boat actually leaves well ahead of 5:30. Sure enough, Marine Traffic shows that it left at 5:17 and arrived in Saint John at 7:10, 35 minutes ahead of schedule. Not sure what the point of running so early is, but the schedule on the website should be updated to say 5:15 if that's the goal. Those who use the information online to arrange for pickup on the other end have a long wait after arriving so early. All around a baffling approach to scheduling.
