The best place to see really cool indie films

A true gem in the city of London! We're lucky to have a cinema like Hyland that shows great films instead of all the Hollywood garbage that you'd see at the mainstream mall theaters. (Not that it's all garbage, but most of it is!)

Went to see Paprika here as a kid, absolutely amazing cinema!

Long established movie house in London showing the best in indie, art house and international cinema. It's an old theatre so don't expect all mod cons or a steep rise (if yer short ya might need to search for a seat with clear sightlines). Tea as well as traditional movie theatre treats are available at the concession counter. The newly paved parking lot is the latest much needed upgrade. The Hyland is actively fundraising for a new digital projector so please support! ????

The uncomfortable seats without cup holders are big negatives against this classic theatre. I didn't have as much an issue with the audio/visual element as some other reviews have mentioned, but it could just be because I was trying to find a place to keep my drink and constantly shifting in my junky seat. What this place does have going for it is some very nice popcorn and showing films that either get too limited of runs or not shown in the other theatres in town. A viable option, but only when they're showing things no one else is.

The cinema was built in the 1930s and changed hands a lot according to the lady at the counter and I found that so interesting cause it is still kept pretty decent. I really love the staff, so personal and courteous. The chairs a slightly dated and not the comfiest but they aren't horrible. The movie was priced at $12.25 and I think that's an okay price. Overall, the movie quality on the screen was very good. I like that they have movie that don't make it to the big cinemas. I would totally go back.

I love going to the Highland but wish they had a few more substantial concession offerings other than just popcorn. Maybe some chips or nachos.

Nice place

The hyland gives a unique movie going experience. Great, rare films that you might not get to see in theatres anywhere else. The cinema is clean and prices are affordable. Check out something new at the Hyland!

Lovely, traditional theatre experience.

The best theatre in town! The staff is so friendly and welcoming. Service is quick. Great retro feel. Cheap concessions and reasonable ticket prices. Retro nights once a month where they show great classic movies like E.T. and Back to the Future. Can't say enough good things about this place!

They showed the movie Jaws in the 35mm version. I loved everything about this theater. It's so retro and vintage which I love.

Always have loved this theatre . LIVED CLOSE by when I was young and saw many movies there. Great memories . keep this theatre alive!

Greayest comedy o have seen lately "blinded by the light". Funny

Great venue that offers limited releases and the chance to view classics on the big screen. Super friendly staff, great pricing, and a whole lot of parking out back. The theatre itself isn't anything special, seats are old but still comfortable, sound system is above par, and the projector could be better (something they are working on changing). But considering there are not many options for a cinema like this one in the area, they do a pretty great job!

Old charm Cinema hall. Good screen and sound system. Maintained well. Seats can be better.

Great little independent theatre. Usually playing whatever the hot indie movies are at the time. Reasonably priced, has a membership program that will save you money if you use it a few times a year. Very clean. Parking in the back

Great to have you in the neighbourhood.

Love the place!

This is the best theatre in London and is one of the city's true gems.

Saw Green Book and the audience clapped at the end. Some stayed to watch the credits. Reminds me of the Toronto audiences where I used to live. Kudos to this London audience for being so knowledgable about movies! ????

Еnjoyed the movie today.Staff is very friendly and the screen is huge.Very positive experience.

Great atmosphere, friendly and passionate staff. Had a great time watching a grind house double feature.

Excellent art house theater

The Hyland offers the best movie going experience in the city: their prices are reasonable, their popcorn is delicious, they offer an interesting array of films (and not just in English) and the staff are all delightfull!

Oldschool theatre, occasionally show films on 35mm and independent/local productions. Good popcorn

Comfortable, friendly service, best place to view re-runs, alternative movies and films, arts productions and many other options not otherwise available in the regular movie theaters.

Cozy theatre. Could benefit from adding cup holders, but overall a great experience. Shows include indie films that most theatres dont show.

Love it :)

If you like indie movies that mainstream cinemas don’t show, this is the place to go.

Love this place. I always like to support local small business. Yearly membership reduces the admission. I think they are doing everything right here.

Very quaint

Best in london brings back memories

Good movies that don't necessarily make it to the chains.

Classic movie theatre. On the expensive side.

Great movie theatre...most always there ard seats available .. The movies are not always the same as the big theatres...

Nice old school atmosphere, perfect to enjoy smaller less known movies

A good place to catch more special audience films.

The last time I was at this theatre was to see Ghostbusters so that tells you how long ago that was. This place is a true gem that must be kept alive. I was a parent supervisor along with a class of kids to see La légende de Sarila and I have nothing but excellent things to say about this place. The staff are down to earth, friendly and work fast. They make you feel right at home and treated the kids really well. The theatre may be small looking but it is so worth the experience of just going. I am so sick of the slick new theatres with a load of theatres inside, loud games, flashing lights and garish colours.... this place is cosy and a perfect environment for a real treat. Fantastic place.

Passionate owner and privately owned. Plays good selection of independent films and films that are critically acclaimed.

Retro theme done decently

Saw a great movie called "How to Bee" there. Good old movie theatre.

I hope this little nostalgia, art house theatre never dies out. They have the friendliest staff and best Retro movie nights in town!

Cozy, small theatre. Great place to see more indie type films. Parking is a bit weird there though, getting in and out is a bit of a gamble. Would go back.

Great facility! Best place to see wonderful movies that are overshadowed by the latest superhero blockbusters in the mainstream cinemas. I've seen a lot films that I enjoyed immensely that I would have missed if not for the Hyland.

Indie films. Great stuff

Great little theatre with a lit of history and character. I will be back

It was a great time with my mom And poppie . The green book

The best local theatre to see all kinds of movies ... mainstream ones but especially lesser known films. Beautiful, family run historic building. Go Hyland!

Since it has 2.1 Audio, it is good outcome but seating was outdated.

New seats would be great

Nice, cozy local movie theatre, membership available for discounts, many Foreign films, documentaries and social topics. Full food and drink counter. Friendly staff. Love it!

Always quaint and intimate

Excellent alternative to big, crowded theatres. Regularly shows fantastic foreign films and movies that do not receive wide releases.

Amazing cinema with proper Indy/art house films and lots of character

Great calendar; helpful, friendly staff. Loads of free parking. Ignore that the decor us a bit tired - it's charming!

Staff are super friendly and very welcoming. Theatre definietly has a retro feel, no better place to see a retro movie or something that the big theatres decided they didn't have room for.

Great indie theater. Ask about holding a viewing.

Cool atmosphere, just need to work on the seats.

Cool place. Me likey. ????????

Retro movie nights are the best. Pleeeease do more!

I had a great experience at hyland cinema each time I went there. My most recent visit we saw retro family movie E.T. The staff were all really friendly. The cinema was clean and organized and the event was excellent. I can't wait to go back next time.

Nice little theatre. We try to support it as often as we can

Amazing theater! Would highly recommend for private corporate events as well!

Wonderful selection of good movies North American and international

The place is small, quaint. They need to upgrade the seats. Make it more cozy. I sat back behind a not very tall lady and could not see the screen entirely. I go there cause they show rare, indie movies and the ones that tend to be left out by the main stem theaters.

Staff was very friendly, popcorn delicious, and cinema was very clean for its apparent age. Seats are old traditional theatre seats. Not overly comfortable, but also not a surprise in an old theatre. This theatre holds charm and some excellent films that distract you for its imperfections when compared to the new theatres (Cineplex etc).

Great place not so good parking.

Seats are horrible but I love the old time ambiance.

Movies that mean more than celebrities!

If you enjoy movies with a good storyline this is the place for you.

Great local cinema with a focus on smaller, independent films. Membership is great, love getting discounts on my movies!

The best movies! The nicest staff!

Old classic cinema. I appreciate the indie feel. No theatrelike it in town.

Great theater experiance!

Local gem. Wish they had more foreign films but great selection otherwise.

I think this theatre is awesome! It has a warm, relaxed, intimate feeling about it. The staff are always pleasant and the films are always first class. Refreshments are great and the theatre takes one back to simpler days. I always look forward to going there and I hope the city will provide funds so that it will continue to exist for a long time. I do not miss the noisy hustle and bustle of multi-theaters with all the gaming and line-ups.

update review. i sill love this theater this is my favorite theater in the city. :)

Hyland is a single screen cinema with a great concession. One of the highlights is their monthly throwback cinema night, usually screening a single old or contemporary classic. Well worth the price of admission. And hey, buy a membership while you're at it! These types of cinemas aren't easy to come by.

Always a perfect cinema experience.

The only place for indie movies

Great place for thoughtful movies, popcorn seasoning a real win.

This place was amazing. I took my husband to see Its a Wonderful Life for the first time, and we were so amazed by the whole experience. There was a curtain that drew open and closed in the theater, the popcorn was fresh and everything was priced very well. The staff were friendly and helpful and genuinely excited and happy to be there. This place is not just a theater, its an experience and I highly recommend it for a date night, any special event, or even just to see an awesome movie.

Welcoming place, excellent lineup of movies, very cost effective. Discount for members.

Nice theater . Privately owned. One of the owners was serving at the concession. They have different types of food and drink. Very clean, good sound system.

They often show films that may be too small or unknown to make it to many larger theaters.

How amazing to bring an old theater back one screen a bunch of seats very nice people it's the old school of Theatre way not seen anymore it doesn't have the fancy chairs but the atmosphere will bring you back to your child the people that desk are super nice and they play a lot of cult classics you can go and watch movies from the past on the big screen it's a real cool

Caution: parking lot is locked in the evening so don't plan to walk for a drink and come back, I made that mistake. Fun, rustic theatre with some great movies not available at the mainstream theatres. Looking forward to visiting again soon. Arrive early for best seats, things get busy between shows.

It is a nice little Retro single screen theatre that seems to, with the exception of the digital projector, seems to have stopped in 1970. It is the best choice for art and foreign films. Oh, and they have excellent popcorn!

Great little theater! Love that they play older and more "artsy" films.

If you want to see good quality movies go here. The staff are fantastic too.

Good movie theatre, has tonnes of character, one star loss for under the armrest gum touch though. Also went to a wedding at this location that was adorable.

Excellent retro movie experience. The movie itself; excellent presentation.

Need to advertise more, uncomfortable seats, more films for different tastes, not just drama, art house.

The place to go for independent movies

Hadn't been to this theatre in years. I was surprised to see the amount of people who went to an afternoon show. Saw Rocketman. Fast and friendly employees

Neat place

Old timey feel ... Prepare yourself for a few less amenities then traditional theaters ... No reclining seats or cup holders but brings you back in time. They also play the not so popular main stream movies which I love!

This is just a great place to see a film. Vintage. Notstalgic. A classic movie going experience with friendly staff, great independent and retro movie nights and yummy snacks! The way going to the cinema should be!

Awesome retro cinema, and great pop corn!! ????????????????

Great selection of art and not quite mainstream films you won't find anywhere else in London. Don't expect quite the comfort of a big chain. Think old school. Great picture though.

Had a great time and movie was awesome! Thanks again!

Caught a playing of back to the future. Felt like I was in a real old school theater. It is historic and not much changed. I’d go again for nostalgia.

Quaint single-screen venue. Good mix of independent films and some "big name" films.

Long-time London cinéma house. Since its purchase more than a decade ago, the owners have turned this lovely little theatre into London's go-to place for art films, popular films and foreign films. It's a little like the old New Yorker repertory cinéma was at Richmond and York. Intelligent films for intelligent people.

Love this place

Great old-fashioned theatre with a real screen. Concession prices are similar to other places (ie outrageous) but to be expected, I suppose. It's clean and spacious in the theatre itself. Lots of variety in the offerings, including film festival picks/foreign movies. Parking is a bit tricky, unless you know the area. Free parking

London's repertory cinema. Art films, tea - love it.

Different movies

Great service, cool movies

A very special movie theater with unique atmosphere and the BEST movie selection in town. It's worth getting a membership if you see more than 3-4 movies per year. They also sell movie posters! In short, our favorite place.

Great movies

More people should go to see these limited release films. I'm glad we have such a place in London. The seats are a little cramped so maybe look for an aisle seat where you can streach out.

Great establishment

Clean great, snack bar, nice seats and good movies!!

Hipster aesthetic and sells posters

Quaint and interesting place. I've only visited twice now but both times have been very pleasant experiences

Awesome theatre with excellent selection of films. No luxury reclining seats but a real throwback and great value. We go again and again!

If you don't want to see the Hollywood blockbusters that are sequels of sequels, the Hyland theatre in London is the place to see great movies. It might not be as flashy as the mega movie theaters but what's on offer here is much better in terms of meaningful cinema.

Love the nostalgia. Friendly staff.

Great adventure during a winter storm. Hyland has a wonderful selection of tea and other nice treats. I have seen both Parasite and Fantastic Fungi this month and I plan to see many more movies here!

I love the vibe of this theatre. They always have the best movies that the chain doesn't have!

Excellent old school theatre. An excellent alternative to the big chains. Always clean. Highly recommended.

Saw "its a wonderful life" with my Mom, and had a fantastic time there! The popcorn was pretty darn good, too!????

great reclining chairs

Love this Theatre! Charming with great freshly popped popcorn with layers of butter!

Great venue with that classic theatre feel, no mega screens or computer kiosks. The concessions are real old timey food and drink. If you want to recapture your youth, before the megacinemas took over, this is a good place to do it. They often have movies that are not mainstream and that you can't necessarily find anywhere else, this also makes them kind of interesting. Buy the membership, it is worth it in the long run.

Great neighborhood theater, few like it left around...

Love this place, the movies and the popcorn!!

Great place for new independent films and even shows 80s classes

Extremely satisfied with experience. Staff was great. Seats were clean. No unwanted 30min session of ads before film, just coming attractions.

Great place to see under appreciated films

Step back in time with old style seats but a staff that are interested in providing relaxing evening of entertainment. Will go there again. Memberships available to get discounted tickets. Tastiest popcorn around.

Nice to catch a movie missed during mainstream release or catch a streaming flick big-screen. Not enough to warrant membership. Place appears to be on verge of breaking down and queuing is ridiculous between concessions & admissions centralized with box office lights blazing and unattended.

Great atmosphere

Very retro, friendly service.

Fantastic staff and wonderful theatre. Took my father to see White Christmas (his favourite) and had a blast. I've been a few times since then and same good experience. Just be aware - the seats do not have cupholders.

The film I wanted to see

I like the old school vibe. Great selection of hot and cold drinks

Seats are a little uncomfortable but a great place to see a movie.

Cozy theatre with charming cat posters and other décor! Membership pays for itself after several movies, and you will certainly keep coming back!

I know they just reopened but I don't think its fair to start movie when you have a lot of people still waiting to be checked in. I hate missing the start of a movie.

Keep up the great work

Really cute theatre that gives off indy vibes and plays really cool movies! Had a great time. There's a parking lot around back and you can bring your bike inside instead of locking it outside.

Lived close by as a youngster. Saw many films...70s and 80s

Really have to thank these guys.

Its an old cinema.Maybe the oldest in london. They show some great movies. Twelve dollar admission.

Best cinema in London, lots of unique films.

The Hyland is a historic cinema, so don't expect reclining seats or that kind of thing. What they do have though is hands down the best movie selection in London. Make sure to buy a membership, which gets you a discount on tickets and quickly pays for itself. They also do Retromania once a month where they do a late night screening of a classic movie, and sometimes they do special double features, including for Halloween.

Wonderful old charm repertoire theater

Films you won't see elsewhere at a reasonable price!

Decent popcorn, great movies. Nuff said. Check out the retro screenings. They're a great time.

Great old theatre atmosphere

Always have great movies that the big theatres don't. Good price good seats good popcorn.

It doesn't have the new recylner chairs but it certainly is a great theatre and plays a variety of movies you just wouldn't see otherwise.

Small local arthouse theatre. Date of visit: Tuesday July 31 for the 9:15 pm showing of leave no trace. Theatre has an all-in-one box-office and concession in the main lobby. That is the lines are not seperate. Prices are reasonable The theatre has one screen with a relatively large amplitheather. There is an ongoing fundraising project wherein you can donate towards a new projector and in return the operators will engrave your name on the brass armrest of a seat. When every seat is sponsored the new projector can be purchased .

Noisy ,small seats, not any $ bargain. Good repertory features.

Retro theatre with great selection of films. Top notch popcorn and seasonings.

I went to see Fight Club on the big screen, and I was not disappointed. This theatre rocks.

Plays out of theater/retro movies

This is one of the worst experiences I have ever had, I purchased movie tickets went and seen the show and on my way out to my car the owner of the highland said that I was parked in private property although I had already purchased the ticket and suggested that I leave or she call the cops! I was extremely offended and when I had tried to explain to her that I was a paying customer she continued to call me stupid and to leave her property. I will never come back to this theater as the owner is extremely unprofessional.

Enjoyed some amazing movies here. Friendly atmosphere and great coffee.

It is a cosy older cinema and the flick we saw was very enjoyable.

(Translated) Awesome (Original) Formidable

Friendly helpful staff the theatre is always clean and in good condition

It has a great selection of movies/films that you won't find anywhere else! The prices are good, there's an adequate amount of parking and the staff are friendly

(Translated) It was really cool, it's very beautiful there and well tidy ???????????? (Original) Foi muito legal, é bem bonito lá e bem arrumado ????????????

Great movie had a blast

Enjoyed the drive in experience. Purchasing tickets and concessions was extremely easy and well run.

This is a very nice theater and they offer a variety of movies each week. By doing so you can see several movies at a single theater. This is not a place offering multiple screens, just one. The service you receive by the staff is top rate.

Love what they bring in!

Favorite movie spot

Good old fashioned cinema. Become a member to shave some cost off tickets annually.

Last night I watched a double feature. John Carpenter's Christine and The Blob. Both of them were excellent. I highly recommend the Hyland Theater. It's a vintage relaxing environment making customers come back for more.

The most interesting movie theatre in London.

Great little art-house theater and one of London's gems. I tend to only go for Retro Nights, which are awesome! They're really a lot of fun and it's the closest I can get to seeing the original film prints in a theater setting with other film nerds. The seats are a little rough if you're a bigger person (I'm not, I just have friends that have a hard time sitting in them). The curtains are mesmerizing too.

Just love the nostalgia of The Hyland

They care about the public... and they make an effort to keep francophone movies a monthly gig. Awesome. MERCI

I absolutely LOVE this place. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. The theater itself is cozy and of a high quality. I have already been back since and plan to go on a more regular basis from now on. If you want a break from the blockbusters shown in the major theaters, this is a great place to go. A true hidden gem of the city!

Love how they play movies on real film! Very authentic place to go , the workers are amazing.

Great little retro-theatre!

Awesome old-school set up, interesting films shown, none of that lame corporate chain Disneyland vibe here like at the cineplexes. So what if the chairs are as hard as a Baptist church pew, and there's less leg room than a cheap charter flight, you're there to check out a cool movie not take a nap.

Nostalgia and great movies at prices from bygone days????????????

Wonderfully quaint theatre that shows great films.

Great screenings and great staff plus you get to support one of the last local cinemas in town.

Love going to see movies here! better popcorn than other theatres!

Great movie theater in London that specializes in indie and other less well-known films. In addition to the regular rotation of indies, they have regular special screenings of classic and cult films like Pulp Fiction, Jaws, and Kill Bill Vols I and II. I recommend checking it out. It's important to support our local small theatres, otherwise Cineplex will be our only option (and that's not good for anybody).

Thank goodness London has an independent movie theatre!

Great retro movie theatre with a good atmosphere,, support local!!!

Great selection of movies, friendly staff, and a overall comfortable and well maintained theater.

This small independent movie theatre will take you back to a time where screens had curtains. The selection of movies are wonderful and not easily found in many other places. I loved the lack of advertizing and left the theatre with the thought of "I want to come back". Their current selection is a must see. Don't forget to enjoy some fresh popcorn!!

Amazing independent theatre showing quality films, including indie, foreign, and art films. Great popcorn and food options. Highly recommend for any movie and in London.

Love it. Has the best movies and the best popcorn!!!!

Old style theatre , reminds one of the movie house days . Laid back atmosphere .

Awesome retro style theatre doing a great job despite COVID restrictions. Keep up the great work, would be nice if more people would come to the shows.

I saw Mandy here on Oct 5th. Amazing experience. Glad places like this still exist.

Saw Fantastic World Of Fungi. It's great that they show indie type films. The theatre is an older type, so it's not as comfortable as say the Cineplex or Imagine. Staff is helpful and quick.

Looks like. Feels like. It is an old Theatre with the real experience. I like the new theatre experience too, but it's missing something, and not just a quaint or nostalgic thing. Something that I'm not yet finding words to describe..

Films are good but equipments are too old though. Not impressed of the image and sound quality, as well as the uncomfortable seats without cup holders.

Surprisingly comfy chairs and loved the concert

Love this place and wish more people would support a great little theatre. Exceptional docs and foreign films.

Great place for independent movies... Nice older theatre!

Ordered buttered popcorn but didn't receive butter. Most uncomfortable seats ever!

Great neighbourhood theatre. Lots of good shows especially ones that never get to the chains or are there for just a few days.

I love hyland for its homey interior, great (intelligent) movies you might never learn about otherwise unless you have a major film hobby, and nice staff. Since I started coming here in the past six months I have seen two of my now favourite movies here just from checking the hyland website and thinking "oh that looks neat" and going to a showing. The popcorn is tasty and they have hot tea and coffee! The staff is very polite and works efficiently when there's a line up at the counter. Check out the drawn cat movie posters downstairs near the bathrooms.

Love this place. Love the vibe. And the movie choices are great, different than what you'd see at a major theater.

Very private cozy just lovely with a great selection of inspiring movies

We do enjoy the films often you can't see elsewhere. Easy to park also.

Great place to watch a movie old school with all the charm

Great independent cinema. Nice venue to see a film.

The seats aren't comfy but it's local, plays indie and limited-release movies, and has plenty of seating with a good view of the screen-- I definitely recommend it!

Great movie. Very tasty buttered popcorn.

See something different here.

A magnificent source to enjoy the finest of cinema from around the world. Furthermore, with the membership available for sale, movie tickets, outside of Tuesday, are the cheapest for first run films in the city.
