REVIEWS OF Stone Jug IN Harbour Grace

Kyle Green

Outstanding atmosphere, very cozy and classic building, reminiscent of an Irish tavern. Very spacious with second and third floor venues for events. Great local beer on tap, and great food. The best chowder on the east coast. Though the menu is terrific, it could be a little more expanded. Limited wine selection. Highly recommended.

Beautiful place! Great service and amazing ambience!

Michael Ty

Amazing renovation of a historical treasure. The seafood chowder was delicious.

Karen H

Great service, delicious food, decent prices! Definitely will return!

Christel de Vries

I had the vegetarian pizza and my mom went with the daily special (which was a smoked salmon pizza). Very tasty, but the crust was slightly (just slightly!!) undercooked. The Round Da Bay chowder was delicious, according to my mom! The decor is worth the detour if you're not already in the area!

Spencer Lush Miller

Decent food, love the pizza

Amazing food and beautiful place highly recommend to try there food!!!

tryingtobe_terri

It was just okay. The service was a little slow, the food was fine. A little over priced... But the building and decor is beautiful!!!

First time visiting the Stone Jug today and I have to say I absolutely loved the experience. The building itself is simply incredible - the owners have done an amazing job with it. The food was excellent, the service warm and friendly, and it was a real treat. When we asked our server for some information about the building she even encouraged us to take some time to look around upstairs at the top two floors - which we did! This shot from the former servants quarters on the third floor. Can't wait to go back again. Thank you!

Beautiful restaurant inside and out. Restaurant and bathroom appeared clean. Service was excellent. Food was delicious. Menu didn't offer as much as I would've liked, especially for vegetarian but had appealing choices nonetheless-- except for the alcoholic beverage menu in my opinion.

very nice place, had pine apple drink, house lemonade, chicken mushroom pizza, hunter pizza and shepherd pie. highly recommend!!!definitely will come back!!~

Staff and food are awesome! If you're looking for an old-fashioned tavern like experience, this is the place to go!

Simon Blair

We ordered the "Formaggi" pizza, the spinach dip, and the chicken fingers. It was reasonably priced, however the kids meals were a bit pricey. The pizza was good though I thought the sauce lacked a bit of seasoning. The outdoor patio had ample wind coverage -even on a windy day- and the interior of the building is beautiful. The service was fast for the most part, and overall a nice experience.

Sweet spot! Really cool interior. Had the lamb burger, was excellent. Staff was friendly, but after 8pm when the kitchen closed we were asked to quickly get out of there so the waitress could go home. Would have been nice to be able to enjoy the space a little longer.

Kash Kohli

Highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for amazing food, friendly staff, high quality service and above all beautiful ambience!!

Jonathan Butt

If you can get here when they are open, it is a great place to eat. Good selection of food, the wait staff was friendly and the atmosphere is old and historic

Steven Rowe

The food is good. The prices are reasonable. The staff are friendly enough. My only criticism is if the place is full, wait times are excessive. This would be mitigated if the staff made sure your drink was fresh, but on our last couple of visits we were bone dry and waited way too long. But...support local!

Jon Lewis

Amazing food and service!

Christina Broccolo

Great food and friendly service.

Ty Marek

great music, great food and great service. highly recommend!!!

This restaurant is beautiful! We were amazed with all of the unique chandeliers. The design is so unique, it's not like any other restaurant around. The strawberry daiquiri and pomegranate martini were both delicious. The wings were so tasty and the wedges were cooked to perfection. The calamari was good also. I would definitely order the burger next time because my partner loved it.

Caroline Ploughman

Never disappointed with the food, the atmosphere and the staff. One of our favorite places.

Troy Hiscock

Beautiful updated decor that honours its history. It features an open kitchen that draws you in to want to try everything on the menu. Speaking of the menu; while traditional, it also features unique options. The special on my visit was chicken tacos with cucumber kimchi, however I opted for the artisan pizza while watching them being prepared (the veggie pizza was delicious). The staff was very friendly, although very busy. Pricing was reasonable, especially considering the quality of the meal. Will definitely return and encourage you to visit if you ever make it out this way.

loujein mouammer

The place has a great interior setup and beautiful patio so worth the visit. A little disappointed that they didn’t have the full menu options due to COVID. Staff is super friendly. We went there for lunch ordered two pizzas (bbq chicken & white sauce truffle chicken) along with wedges. The food was fine (3/5). I advise ordering the sandwiches instead.

Bill Ping

Great place, great food, reasonably priced...????????????

J.J. Nugent

Beautiful, historic location that is so comfortable and cozy you might forget you are in a building that is over 150 years old. The food was amazing. Portion sizes were not huge, but not overly small, either. The service was fast and very friendly and helpful. Overall a really great meal experience at an average price point. Definitely will be visiting this location again.

Rainbow Remixer

Nice building, nice architecture, the food was mediocre at best, and the atmosphere is all they really have going for them.

Jillian Adams

The building is beautiful and the service is excellent.

Livia Power

I enjoyed my food; however, my friend was not overly impressed with her wrap. It was a birthday lunch my friend took me for and our meal came to $70...it was lunch!!! Soup, sandwiches, deep fried pickles and a drink each. They were busy so a reservation is suggested. They have a small menu right now due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Aidan37

Lovely dining experience. The food and service were both excellent. Very reasonably priced.and the ambience is second to none, especially if you're a fan of 19th century architecture.

Was asked if we would sit outside. We said yes. Was sat at a table that was soaking wet and was left. We had to put up the umbrella ourself. Was given Plastic cutlery which I thought was odd for a sit down meal. Food was delicious though and came out quickly and hot.

daniellemcg

Had great expectation for this place...extremely disappointed. Restaurant was not busy. Server was inattentive and rude. Multiple menu items on the already limited menu were 'not available'. Had to share menus among our group. Appetizers (two of the same ordered) were raw and inedible. Sent back. Waited 40 minutes for another one after having to remind server. We were told one of our mains was burned and they remade it but remade the incorrect dish. We were told we could either take that one or wait another half hour for a new 'correct' one be made. Will not be back. Washrooms had used paper towels overflowing and all over the floor. Beautiful space though.

Nicholas Thoms

Some of the best local dishes and great selection of alcohol and beers

My Mom and I dropped by hoping to have lunch at The Stone Jug. A nice waitress offered to clean a table and seat us on the outside deck. When I went to the car to get my Mom and came back the head waitress, I'm assuming, said that we could not have the table that the new waitress shouldn't have agreed to seat us which would have been fine. She then raised her hand and said "stay here" like we were children! People make mistakes however, she then belittled the new girl in front of us! We were floored! How rude and unprofessional! We decided to leave and got take-out up the road at Don's where the waitress was super nice. I can't say that I would never go back because I've heard such good things about the food. The waitress on duty at lunchtime on the deck on Wednesday July 22, 2020 needs to take a customer service course or learn some manners.

Beautiful building built in 1860's. Building is restored and still has original bricks and stones. The presentation and quality of food is phenomenal! The overall experience is quite nostalgic. Well worth the visit!

STAN LEY

The best heritage building around. Great food and service.. Covid restrictions put a damper on supply so some menu options are not available..

Jason Vaters

This place was fantastic. The food was amazing with plenty of flavour. Our group had a couple different pizzas, back ribs and pad Thai. All were great but the Truffled Chicken and Mushroom pizza topped the list. We arrived before the dinner rush, so our server suggested we take a look around the building which was built in 1860.

If you are in the region, I highly recommend the Stone Jug. Dropped in for lunch, great attentive service, nice atmosphere and amazing food - Pizza, salad and soup of the day. The only negative would be the lack of local craft beer on tap. Otherwise, it was the best restaurant meal I've had since landing on The Rock a week ago.

Graham Tattersall

Great pub in Carbonear. I had lunch here with my partner on a quiet weekend afternoon and had a great experience. The pizza and salad were both delicious and reasonably priced, and our server was attentive and friendly, chatting with us about different sites to see around Carbonear and Victoria. I definitely recommend stopping in here for a meal.

Steve Drodge

Excellent lunch, great service, and a unique interior.

David Moore

Lovely food in a beautiful building with great beer, and a live music session on Saturday afternoons. And very family-friendly.

Terry Janes

Excellent pizza and appy's , service was no.1.

Anna Ogbemi-Ifediora

Good service and nice ambiance. Just had finger foods but they were great!

Glenn Gleeson

Great food, decent prices, cold local beer and wonderful atmosphere. The building has been beautifully restored. If you dine on the the main floor be sure to visit the second and third floors for a look. We enjoyed the daily special, a smoked meet melt and chili cheese fries. Our son loved the wood fired oven cheese pizza from the kids menu. All the food was fresh and delicious and the staff were fast, efficient and friendly.

jason spratt

Nice building. That's about it.

Allison Wilson

Good atmosphere, nice staff, good food. Would go back!

Jay See

Really nice old-style pub. Everything is wood panelled and looks great, the loft room at the top of the building is a nice space and has a pretty historical timber roof truss. Stopped in for some beers and some pickle fries, everything tasted delish and the service was friendly, casual and professional.

Michael Dawe

Fabulous restruant atmosphere. Food is moderately expensive. I had the montreal smoked meat sandwich and is was the smallest sandwich I have ever had. Very tiny and very little meat and way to expensive for the size of the sandwich. Will not go back.

Josephine Hawkins

GOOD food..excellent Staff...

Carl Pitcher

A gem! Beautiful interior in this historic building. Menu was varied and prices moderate. Food was excellent as was the service. Loved the borscht! If you’re visiting Carbonear, it’s the best place to dine.

Janet Robertson

While on holiday to Newfoundland we were recommended by a local to eat at the Stone Jug and we were not disappointed. The food was remarkable and with lots of items on the menu there is something for all. I ordered the Oven Roasted Cod which was perfection and my guest had the 1860 Mediterranean salad, which was well enjoyed. Bon appetite!

Quinton Smith

Great pub! Probably the best chowder I have ever had was there.

Johnny John

I will start out by saying this is one of the most beautiful looking century restaurants anywhere! (that's the one star) But that's where it ends!! We ate here twice, summer of 2019 and fall 2020. I could get into a long story but to summarize; our two meals came out 15 minutes apart (both times we ate there), the pizza dough was undercooked (both times), the burger and fries were stone cold and we found the shift manager to be very unprofessional dealing with the situation. And then there is the bigger issue of their online menu vs the burger and pizza joint menu we were handed in fall of 2020. They do have a covid notice on line, but with 3 steaks, chicken and ribs on an extensive menu you would think a restaurant of this caliber would make sure they have more than burgers and pizza to serve!!! Bait and switch is what we call it, and contrary to consumer law!! I notice they are temporarily closed, hopefully this owner is done and someone who know how to run a restaurant properly takes it over. Won't be back under this ownership!!

holly Kimrey

Beautiful building, the chandeliers were gorgeous ! Lunch was good.

Stephen MacDonald

A must go. Been here every time while visiting home. A yearly tradition. Amazing Pizza food selection is massive portions are great. Prices are great. Great beers. Amazing historic atmosphere. Beauty spot.

Sherry Locke

Wonderful place great service

mairead phelan

Great craic wit traditional Irish-Newfoundland music & a screech-in

A Munden

Ate here last night. Had the half-rack of ribs with fries. Best ribs I've ever eaten, no exaggeration. The ribs were tender, falling off the bone, perfectly cooked. The sauce was tangy and sticky and delicious. I think the switch from the seasoned taters to fries was a good move, the fries could have been a bit fresher/crispier, but they were seasoned well, hot and tasty.

blair Murphy

Great food and atmosphere. Service was really good. Music was too loud for a conversation comfortably when performers stared.

scott F

Me and my boyfriend had an absolutely phenomenal meal! From start to finish! Gorgeous atmosphere, delicious drinks and exquisite food!! Everyone should take the time to make the trip out to here to enjoy everything it has to offer including the beautiful ocean view! Everything we ordered was a 10/10 Drinks: Pineapple smash Strong bow Food: Dry Cajun wings (starter) Rokke burger AAA Striploin with horsey mash potatoes Side Mac & cheese Desert: Homemade cheesecake with homemade blueberry preserve Sending huge thanks to our fantastic server Carolyn! Who gave us a perfect experience! Can’t wait to be back for more! Again if anyone was thinking of trying out the historical 1860 stone jug.... DO IT NOW! You most definitely won’t regret it!!!!!

Douglas S

Staff were not masking behind bar despite provincial requirement to mask, it was very noisy and crowed and the food was mediocre

Denise Baker

The Stone Jug is one of the most amazing restaurants I've ever had the pleasure of visiting each time I come to Newfoundland. Aside from an unsual waiting time for our food this visit we were restfully advised of the delay and given complimentary drinks. I highly recommend everyone to visit this unique restaurant not only for the exquisite cuisine but to admire the detailed architecture on each level and the absolutely magnificent chandeliers scattered throughout. Also hats off to the chefs and staff for making this years visit so memorable. Denise Baker, Bradford, Ontario

Christine Bugler

What a beautiful place with great food and wonderful service.

B

This was the third occasion visiting this restaurant. The first two times were unsuccessful due to private functions taking place. The interior design is certainly well done, with a wonderful ambience. We were disappointed that the staff were not wearing gloves or masks during this pandemic period. All food establishments should be doing so. The young girl hostess and greeter was not pleasant or welcoming, but our server lady was fine. The curried chick pea soup was really good, and the Turkey club sandwich was good. We would rate the house coffee as average.

Tom Forsey

Last night we had supper at the beautiful Stone Jug!! It was awesome. Such a beautiful building, the food was to die for...we had the steak???? And our server...Caroline...was so friendly, knowledgeable about the food, and made the experience that much better. Can't wait to come back again.????????

Ed Moores

Rated the restaurant "5" because there was absolutely nothing that was amiss. Atmosphere, service and food were top drawer. The Rourke burger was unbelievable (and large).

Valerie Cooper

Atmosphere was awesome. Pizza was delicious. Service was great ????

I ended up eating several times at the Stone Jug during my stay in Newfoundland. Every visit was a “five” rating. Unlike the other pubs and restaurants I ate at in Newfoundland, the Stone Jug offered fresh, from scratch, non-fried foods. All the meals I ordered were excellent. If I had to recommend only three things, it would be: 1) The seafood chowder 2) The fishcakes 3) The Shepard’s pie The woodwork, stonework, lighting and open kitchen creates an atmosphere like no other restaurant that I have dined in. The restaurant also has good entertainment in the evenings. They use local music performers. I would definitely eat at the stone jug again. Go see it for yourself!

Andrew

Tonight was extremely disappointing. After seeing what looked like a great menu, we thought we would give the stone jug a try. But once seated we were met with a lengthy list of everything they didn't have. When it was time for the appetizers we chose four things they actually did have- sweet potato fries, muscles, shrimp and caesar salad. The sweet potato fries were under cooked, and had a mushy consistency. The muscles had a foul odour, which no fresh muscles should have. And when it was time for the shrimp, we were also treated with a mystery hair! The caesar salad was also a let down. To begin it was missing the sun dried tomatoes and had stale croutons. The dressing was essentially tasteless water. After some disappointing appetizers, my family and I hoped we would have a different experience with our entrees. We never. We ordered two pizzas- the sauce there was none. But that doesn't mean the pizza was dry. When you cut into the pizza, orange grease came pouring out. Gross. They obviously ran out of mozzarella, so substituted it with a bubble gum layer of pre-shredded tex mex. Crust was mediocre at best. We also had two kids meals. They were grilled cheese. How can someone mess up a grilled cheese? After one taste of the rubbery cheese, the little girls were done. We cannot comment on the dessert as we didn't order any, after the previous disasters, but weren't even offered the free dessert that came with the kids meals. The service at this restaurant was also terrible. The only time we saw our server was when she took/delivered orders, and brought the bill. Never even offered a drink refill. She should be ashamed to even call herself a server. Overall, save your money and go somewhere else. REPLYING TO OWNERS RESPONSE- Since you seem to think we weren't at the stone jug, I have attached some of the pictures of our meal. Over all your response was very disrespectful and lacked any and all professionalism.

Jocelyn Kelland

The chowder was not very good and the caesar was small and expensive.
