I've recently moved to Guelph and this is without a doubt my new favorite movie theatre, bookstore and Cafe combo. Sipping hot coffee from a China mug, through an afternoon matinee, in the most comfortable seats, was such a great experience at the movies. And the senior's rate helped too!!!

The Bookshelf is one of my favourite places - I love the selection of titles they carry, the "Canadian Authors" section (where I spend most of my time!) and the atmosphere. They've kindly ordered in books for me if they didn't have them on the shelf and the staff has always been helpful and cheerful. The magazine department is well-stocked with interesting titles, and the cinema upstairs is a gem with a good combination of Hollywood fare and independents/foreign films.

My advice for a book go Indigo. When I ordered my book yesterday the lady told me i should see it within the hour. She took my card and a day later.I called to ask what happened. They then said they don't guarantee deliveries after 2. Their website states this. Fine. Then don't tell me it'll be there in an hour. When I called to ask the status of my order they couldn't find it. Told me it was probably out. I haven't seen it yet.

The Bookshelf, the Gondor of the defence of the brick and mortar book stores. Though really, this is more than a bookstore, it is the cultural icon of Guelph, complete with its attached Miijidaa, and the cinema upstairs (love this part of it as a student of film). I've been going to get my books and having great conversations with the staff since I was a kid growing up in Guelph, and it's still my benchmark for comparing all other independent bookstores against. Keep doing everything you're doing Bookshelf!

Really good bookstore with a great buying team. Clean layout and great selection of contemporary titles. Mainly looked at the Music Book and Music section. Great to see all of the Patti Smith books and a copy of Joni Mitchell Morning Glory. Unassuming small record and CD section is really well curated. Surprised to see an OG Rawkus Mos Def 12", Hot Chip One Pure Thought, a bunch of DJ Shadow and Bjork and Roots stuff. Willie Nelson and Leon Russell LP. La Roux CD. Seems like the staff really cares about introducing people to diverse and important authors and artists.

We saw a movie at the Bookshelf cinema last wknd. It was a bitterly cold night but nice & toasty inside. I love the fresh popcorn - much more reasonable than the blockbuster cinemas! While waiting for the show to start, they run local business ads on the screen. This is much more enjoyable than the ear bending noise & promos they run at the bigger locations. It's a smaller, cozy cinema with comfy seats and super snacks! We love coming here!

I visited in-person for the first time since COVID and it's still the same warm and cozy bookstore you'd expect in a romanticized movie. Coming in from the rain on a slow Froday afternoon, I'm greeted by friendly staff and their selection of new and recommended books. The in store selection is smaller than chapters, but every book seems worth your time and interesting, as if it were curated just for you. They're also able to order basically any book you'd like, so don't be shy about asking for a book you want but can't find. The store is clean, the shelves are tidy and the atmosphere is calming. As I checked out with Ishiguro's "Klara and the Sun" in hand, I had a nice chat with the person on cash about the book. Special note: their bags are also compostable. I really love the Bookshelf, and I can't wait for it's theatre to open again. It's a genuine part of what makes Guelph feel special and like home. Please support this local bookstore.

I'm all for supporting local! The Bookshelf is lovely. It's a place you can not only purchase a book, but also greeting cards, games, clothing and stationary. The Bookshelf supports local artists: check out the cards! Parking downtown Guelph isn't always the most convenient, and there is no parking lot during the day that you can use (street parking only). There's a cinema on the second floor, it's pretty neat. It would be nice that their information stations were working properly, as when it gets busy in the store it's not always easy to get help from staff. The prices are more expensive than say Amazon and even Indigo...I've actually purchased a cookbook from Shopper's Drug Mart that was about 25% cheaper than The Bookshelf...so do your research if you're on a budget.

An absolute gem. A superbly curated bookstore, with knowledgeable and dare I even say, happy staff (that's rare these days). Located in a large building, The Bookshelf is also a theatre, and has space for two restaurants where you can combine dinner and movie dates as well as pre or post movie strolls through the stacks of books. Not just your average chain bookseller, this store has heart and personality, and a sense of community. With memberships available, and discounts for University of Guelph students, The Bookshelf is a Guelph home away from home. I'll be back.

The venue has changed since last visit. Once up the stairs you go down a long hallway to the back that's where the concessions are and where you buy the tickets then you can enter the theatre from that end beside the screen. I know it's a small theatre with tight quarters but I wish the seats were a little wider

This is a very nice little theater that has character and spunk! Very similar to the George cinema in Elora so check that one out too! They play a lot of lesser known films as well as mainstream ones. The previews are mostly local advertisements so you can get a taste of what businesses are local in the area and not just another coca cola ad. The lobby has an old school film projector that is very nostalgic and you can really get a grasp of how far we have come. And there is a restaurant in the back so that's a plus if you want a meal or drink.

I was here about six months ago and it was okay but not great. I went this morning again with my family and it was truly terrible. The waitress was initially rude and uncommunicative but then suddenly nicer towards the end of the meal (perhaps she remembered she had a tip coming to her). She was also sneezing while she walked around and would then continue serving customers without washing her hands. We ordered a lot of food but couldn't really eat any of it. The jalapeno cornbread was dry and oddly sweet, the Welsh griddle cakes tasted bizarrely like ketchup and came with a side of "blueberry" preserves that had the taste and texture of ketchup (maybe they had an excess in the kitchen they were trying to get rid of), the macaroni and cheese was tasteless, (and $17) and the smoked tofu sandwich tasted like bacon. On top of that, a couple of our plates were dirty. We were thoroughly put off by the experiencing and won't be returning.

If you need a book, you should honestly come here first. Chances are it will be the last place you need to go. They have everything, it's crazy! I looked everywhere for a specific book, and finally checked out the bookshelf to find exactly what I was looking for. The guy who helped me find the book was great too, he seemed to really like his job. Keep up the great work Bookshelf staff!

I was looking for a new book and before checking the big boxes I checked out the Bookshelf....they had the book, same price, easy ordering, and free in Guelph delivery on the next day. Buy local, especially when local is run this well.

Went with several people on Dec 18 for a celebratory dinner and while the available food was fine, they had run out of some items on the menu; it's not as tho' we were unexpected guests; however, this glitch was more than made up for by the amiable and efficient young female server who despite the size of our group was very pleasant and efficient and on top of everything throughout - absolutely great job by her. Another nice touch was the samplings of some new beers that we were all offered. Good time had by all.

The bookshelf is truly a book lovers haven. As soon as you walk in, it's warm and cozy. They have so many unique trinkets included with a wide selection of books. The kids section is carpeted, which allows children to sit and fall in love with an item to take home. All the staff are friendly and helpful. If you can't find something they will locate it and bring it in for you. Love love love The Bookshelf!
