This Movie Theater corresponds to the category of Movie theater.
Nice atmosphere- a unique movie watching experience
This place is a second home to me, originally came for the free movie Monday events but have been going there for years now to see classics new and old on the big screen. Always a great time, awesome staff.
Cheap popcorn and beer in an old movie theatre. Tons of great events on here, so check it out if you get a chance.
The Royal remains a Toronto treasure of cool!
Nice old theater
Old timey and awesome. Features numerous free summer events and was home to JFL42.
Great venue, I've seen several things here and they often have free movies showing
Small venue but lots of special showings and events. Serves beer. Classic old timey interior.
Mucky old theatre, tap water in the bathroom is scalding hot (therea a warning printed out, but please fix the tap).
Great old rep cinema. Real butter on the popcorn!
Old school but nice.
Quaint neighbourhood repertory theatre.
Best popcorn money can buy.
I'm so happy I live close by. Charming, large theatre space, great popcorn, an amazing variety of events (with a large monthly calendar posted outside), and a classic marquee that's updated every day.
Love the atmosphere
Great venue..the concession food is way overpriced.
Good luck if a tall person sits in front of you
Great Cuban Film Festival CineCuba 2019
They atmosphere is so fun with a real retro vibe and they always put on unique shows here!
Cool old-timey movie theatre that shows older films. Get your popcorn with some butter for a dollar extra.
Surprisingly comfy seats. Great events.
Nice relaxed environment, a cool place to see some unique films.
Excellent venue for JFL 42. Comfortable with good acoustics and located in a great neighborhood. Cheers!
It's the Royal. It's historic. It's classic.
Enjoyed the bouncy seats. Great for laughing in.
Only thing missing is washroom accessibility.
I have seen so many awesome shows here, love this place :)
Cool theater with a lot of interesting events
Best theatre in the city
This is a great theater showing all sorts of interesting films. If you are a movie buff you need to check out their schedule. Despite being an older theater, the seats are comfortable. Yummy popcorn and everyone is super friendly.
Saw The Raid 2 and it was great. Lots of seating and great programming. Cash only.
I forget why I came here but it was a good time
Great venue but needs an accessible bathroom. Very sad it doesn't have one
Historic theatre, amazing relic
Great old cinema
Always a good time. This place kicks ass the staff are wonderful
Love it!
Beautiful old school theatre that has a lot of character to it. Definitely a place to watch documentaries and classic films.
Really cool, retro venue that shows some awesome old movies. The seats aren't all that comfortable though but that's sort of expected given the age of the place.
10 movies and curated pre-shows!
Kind of an old fashion cinema theatre. Good sound system.
Pretty cool movie theater in the old style! Awesome "Free Flick" Mondays once a month.
Old school independent neighbourhood cinema showing a mix of classics and new releases. Select screenings they serve beer and wine to wash down the popcorn! Usually there will be a brief talk/intro prior to the screening.
I came here for the Great Canadian Scifi film festival. Apart from the STEEP concession prices I had lots of fun here. Really enjoyed all the films and the staff was pretty great.
The ventilation in here is truly the finest. Real clean air. Top notch lads. Well done
Fun vibe, great shows!
Fantastic traditional movie theater that always has great programming!
The screen of the theatre is too small and seats are not that comfortable, bad experience.
Classic
Pretty interesting restaurant. Very pleasant friendly staff. The menu is simple and quite different. The pizza options are very unique, and there are vegan options. Overall, a pleasant quick eatery option in the area.
Nice old movie theatre.
Even if they only have the one screen, at least it doesn't look like any of The Carlton's! Great place to catch off-beat films and event like the Haphead screening.
Hipster to the max! Comfy seats. Classic snacks.
Theater with great atmosphere showing unique/older films. The pre-shows are great too. Something you don't get in a regular movie theater.
Great atmosphere of an old theatre, definitely worth checking out.
Super cute theater parking is ample on Street there are several Lots and the bar is stocked with different ciders and beers and small snacks great option when seeing a film
Old school cool. It's a dated cinema, but one with charm and style still. Comfy seats too.
It good place and theatre
Beautiful classic theater.
Love this place
Today's comedy podcast, Doug Loves Movies was presented on stage with Doug Bensin and guests. This was a great show. My seat was very comfortable, the staff were helpful and friendly, and the sound was great. I would gladly visit this theater again.
Awesome movie theatre. Great atmosphere for catching some more obscure flix on the big screen. Nice concession area with treats, sugary drinks, popcorn, and beers. Friendly staff, clean bathrooms, what's not to like.
Great independent theater with lots of fun movies and festivals.
I've been to the Royal many times and there's really nothing quite like it in Toronto. Fun pre-show clips and raffles, cheap snacks (by movie theatre standards) and drinks, and a good variety of new and old films that you typically won't find playing anywhere else.
Loves this amazing little theatre that allowed the feeling of watching movies like the 1980s. Loved the experience. The chairs are classicly old and comfy!!
Great, elegant, grand theater.
Friendly staff always had a pleasant experience here :)
So much fun to go to a show here
Awesome art deco movie theatre. Fabtastic for enjoying european avat garde movies
Awesome small retro cinema showing old & obscure movies. Well worth a visit, great atmosphere.
Good times at a great place for all families and friends! Safe space for everyone!
Fun theatre and affordable tickets
Great seating and a wonderful asthetic to this restored venue. Friendly staff and fun events make this a top movie spot in T.O.
Very nice independent theatre with lots of fun places to explore in the neighbourhood!
Absolutely love the royal. The Theater has charm and character which is nice in the city.
Great place for retro screenings and niche events. They've done showings of The Room in the past. More recently I saw Everything Is Terrible's live show, which was a fantastic time.
Awesome theatre ... Great European film festival ... Saw brilliant Bulgarian film ...
Rudest staff.
Premium sound system. Super comfy reclining seats. Basic snacks.. but it's OK to bring outside food in. There are three editing suites upstairs and the main cinema can also be used as a film editing room. One of the nicest cinemas in the city.
Great place to find foreign language and niche films. European Union Film Festival movies are free!
Hell of a nice little theatre.
Great, classic theatre with amazing genre films.
Cool theatre! We went for a airfield screening of Garth Merengi's Dark place, which in itself is super cool that a theatre is showing that, but we're surprised by a special appearance of the show's star Matt Berry showing up! ???? What a night to remember!
OMG it's amazing and can't wait for more shows
Loved the German movie!
Love this theatre
I love The Royal like I love all old movie theaters. So many memories, so much energy etched into her old bones. If you like the Royal, check out the Fox. The Fox is the oldest Cinema in North America.
Best theater in the city
Came for Wayne's World 25th anniversary screening and had a blast. Love indie theatres that create special events for classic and themed movie nights. Kinda weak and overpriced selection of beers and snacks but I appreciate this is how they support themselves. Great place and will definitely keep an eye out for more great movie nights!
Love that we have independent cinemas in the city catering to niche films and showing all of us that great cinema doesn't have to be mindless action flicks
Chill with friends awesome
Old school...
Love this theatre.
My mother took me here for Peter pan long time ago
Iconic Toronto landmark showing amazing films... Will definitely come again!
Something interesting happens when you show up to a screening of an older movie: you find yourself in the company of a bunch of strangers who are really, really excited and happy. The Royal is a fantastic theatre. Reasonable prices, great film selections. It makes for a wonderful night out.
This is a fantastic place to spend an evening. Look forward to visiting
Saw the elwins perform last night and then watched harold and maude! Was a great night :)
first (and last) time I was there (2011) they only had 2 cheap stereo speakers and not even a center channel....lol guess the want to keep the old school feel
Came for the paddling film fest... What a great venue... Very intimate and warm environment
Awesome repertory and art house cinema located somewhere central and accessible. Licensed concession stand!
The perfect cinemaphile experience, with great programming, great staff, and a beer with your classic movies.
Rza cam thru one time. WUTANG 4EVER
Scream queen is the best
Fun little theatre running specialty movies
Love this place. Great for dates and make out.
Cozy place to watch awesome movies
The second run movie scene is benefitted greatly by this place. I will love this place until it eventually and tragically goes under.
It's a cool place and not a really big theater so there isn't necessarily a bad seat. It is a bit older and chairs do squeak, but overall don't overlook this place if something is happening here.
Great location for a show or movie. Washrooms are upstairs and not accessible for people with disabilities.
Saw Garth Marenghi's Darkplace here. Great experience. Loved the custom trailers.
Great old Theatre that brings a variety of programs and the seats were comfortable ????.
Phenomenal programming, super fun vibe, great projection and audio.
an excellent theatre with inventive and interesting programming deserves support in a declining industry
So so
Nice old theatre showing cool flicks. Great folks behind the counter. We'll be back!
Classic old style theatre. Washrooms are inaccessible to those who can't take stairs. Comfy seats. Polite staff.
Yep too many broken seats and garbage. Place smelt a bit like BO.
My favourite rep cinema in the city right now.... Comfy seats, gorgeous big theatre, good programming, and they still will show 35mm movies not just digital.
I love the historic atmosphere! also appreciate the fact that they play classics every once in a while, especially when it's a Charlie Chapin movie!
Cool independent movie theater that shows a lot of classic movies. Ticket prices are not bad and the prices for concessions are very reasonable. Cups of water are also free! The thing about this place that makes it less than perfect is the seating arrangement. There is a whole block of seats right where the best spot to sit would be that is taken up by what looks like a sound booth. Not sure what it's like to sit behind this, it might be ok, but the seats in front fill up very quick. We decided to sit at the side which still had a great view of the screen. However during the movie people were constantly getting up and as they walked by blocked the screen. A mild inconvenience but still annoying. I would imagine this gets worse the more crowded it is and the screening I went to was very crowded.
The best rep cinema in all of Toronto. A must.
Long live this treasure
Beautiful theatre showing a wide range of movies, often with special appearances by actors, directors, drag queens...amazing entertainment all around. The programmers at the Royal are amazing with huge creative talent. The best popcorn of any movie theatre I haven't been to at reasonable prices makes it worthy the drive in from well west of Toronto for me.
Greatest movie selection in the city, hate how there is audio station with rows of "reserved seating" right in the middle. Not cool.
Best popcorn ;)
A really nice place to see a show or event. The concession is reasonable, the seats very comfortable, the repertoire tends to be both eclectic and interesting, and it's intimate in a way that a modern place isn't.
Such a great spot and very nostalgic with the stage for movie screenings. They do a lot of special screenings and I was able to see There Will Be Blood when they were having showings for PTA ramping up for Phantom Thread’s release. The popcorn prices are good and they also sell beer! I saw a show for JFL as well and the seats are super comfy.
This is a great movie theatre that is close to many restaurants and bars for dinner before a show. Staff are also very nice. Tickets, snacks and drinks (both alcoholic and non) are reasonably priced making it an affordable night out.
Old school theater
Cozy
The Royal has quickly become one of my favorite theaters. Damn great programming.
Service could be better. Cool that it's still around.
LOVE the staff here and the movie curation every month is so fun! Cozy and independent. Love that they also host Rue Morgue's Cinemacabre movie nights.
Seats were dirty, looks like someone dropped chips everywhere, looks like janitors didn't want to clean.
Love it. Great staff. Comfortable room. Wide variety of programming
Cozy. Vintage. Nostalgic.

This is a great theater for off beat films. The special events here are often hilarious. It could be compilations of Internet videos of 70s exploitation films. The theatre itself is comfy and nicely decorated. Also they make tasty popcorn.
Rad cinema!
Historically great
Great place for film festival and seeing classic movies on the big screen
The Royal is amazing, 'nuff said.
I like it good movie
A great theatre! This is a classic theatre in all of its glory. Big cushy seats big screen and wonderful arcitecture. We saw the breakfast club here just to put some retro icing on top. Everyone needs to support these little tears before they are gone. You must see a movie here!
Very comfortable chairs that recline! Although wine comes from a box, it’s quite tasty.
Great variety of screen treats.
one of the great indie theatres left in Toronto
Lovely indie spot in Toronto, I wish there were more like this.
Fun little spot. Very cool place to catch a movie you can't see anywhere else.
Thanks can't wait to be back
Great little theatre to see unique films. Recently saw little shop of horrors there and had a great time. Comfortable seats with a good view. They sell popcorn and candy for a decent price as well. Staff is friendly and welcoming. I will be keeping an eye out for future shows that may interest me.
Great theatre, great movies, very eclectic and fun.
Great theatre, great atmosphere, great crowds, great programming.
What can i say about the Royal located at 608 College St, in the heart of Toronto. Very unique and wonderful place to visit. They have a lot of different types of shows that play here. From local comedies to drama. Make sure to review what shows are going on before coming down because the show may be sold out!
Movies good
Amazing independent cinema.
Great local cinema
Great older cinema. Lots of charm, amazing staff.
Friendly. Welcoming. Comfortable seats. Good music. Great staff
Nice theatre
Love it!!! So retro!!!! Shows old movies!!!! Cheap tickets!
One of my favourite cinemas. Cavernous, slightly creaky seats, but some of the most adventurous programming in the city. Super friendly staff too!
Had to wait more than an hour, the staff explained why the delay was for, they are courteous and very pleasant to talk. Finally when got into the theater very comfortable seats to sit and watch the movie. Enjoyed watching telugu movie here.
Nice little theatre that has vintage feel to it
Did not pay me for 2 weeks of work
One of Toronto's great theatres!
A beautiful theatre, a great place
Beautiful old theatre in the heart of Little Italy. Great concession stand with beer and wine - although I felt a little gouged paying 8 bucks for a can of beer ...
Outstanding small, independent rep cinema, in the great of charming Little Italy...
Theatre is good but there is no free parking facility. Need to park car on nearby streets.
I love the old style Ness of you it it made me feel at home and I love the free movie
Amazing local theatre! Great programming.
Fun indie theater with amazing popcorn. Not the cleanest.
Awesome space to see a movie or a concert. Has the feel of a 20's era theatre, but with comfy seats. They serve alcohol to drink during the show, the popcorn is great and the staff super-friendly and attentive. Good clean establishment, I certainly hope it is here for many years to come.
So quaint and origional theater that brings you back in time but so clean and comfortable and enjoyed my experience.
art and classic film hub for everyone.
Very clean
Was here for the toronto food film festival 2019. Please feel free to follow me on IG Mandilicous for food and lifestyle posts.
It's one of the best theaters in town the seats are roomy and comfortable
We reserved tickets paying and because we were last minute there were no seats left due to free riders.
Great revue venue.
I went for a very fun Halloween special, Drag show +movie.
I was going to host an event here, when the dipshit organizer, Simon double booked the date and time. He is extremely unprofessional and tried to blame me for his error.
Saw the premiere of Hunters Moon!!! Twas great...classic venue, popcorn n drinks..everything was great!
Really cool review theatre and special events venue. Very comfortable seating!
Old cinema in middle of the city. Always with amazing events during the month. Try to be updated about the events because some of them are free (free movies and concerts). The cinema sells beers, drinks, candies and popcorn.
Fun!
Charming older theater that has been well maintained. Was here for a private screening/premiere of a TV Show that a friend was involved with. Would like to return and see something else here, they seem to screen a lot of classics and obscure titles.
Just a great local theater, showing great films. Comfy seating and very good sound.
Went to a live event here. Awesome experience.
Not bad they're and solid sound system
Place is tidy even with the lack of personnel and attractions compared to regular theatres. Of course the selection of movies are usually not really found in other places.
Great theatre. Decent seating in a grande style building. Tons of variety programming.
A classic Toronto theater. I've been to the Royal for film screenings, JFL performances and talks and it has always been a warm, old school, genuine experience.
Cool old theater
Good place to see Canadian and indie films
One of the best cinemas in Canada. Great programming and events, comfy seats, beer, and fab staff.
Amazing venue was lucky enough to see Wintersleep at the Indie88 band and a movie event. The staff was amazing, great sound quality for the concert. The venue has a great vibe. Prices for food and drinks where below chain theater prices and a good selection. Great popcorn. Also found the seats very comfortable as they recline and have very thick padding.
Has character. Needs TLC. Reminds me of our theater in home town 40 years ago. A comfortable seating in theater and clean!
Great management. Wonderful stuff. Very polite and helpful.
Free movie night
Squeaky chairs, popcorn and a show. I love the retro vibe. Staff was friendly. We went for a few of the JFL42 shows, this was probably my favorite venue.
Great programming and a great vibe. Not every seat is comfy so get there early enough to pick the best one
Entertainment was great here for stand up. Lighting was very poor though.
Cool movie theater!
Iconic venue, one of my favourite places in town.
Great old style movie theatre love it. Love the smell of the place
Well maintained.
Good service and atmosphere
Place needs reno. Badly.
I have been to The Royal several times now but only ever for stand up comedy. I can't speak on it for anything else. For comedy I think it is a great venue. It is a theatre, so you get great acoustics but, it is not large enough where it does not feel intimate. Every seat in the house is good save for a few in the middle that a shorter persons view could be obstructed by a half wall where it looks like the video and sound equipment are. This could give some shorter people problems.
I've been trying to purchase tickets for a show that is happening Oct 17th since August. They're ticket website won't accept any form of payment and they're phone number NEVER gets picked up. I've left 3 messages since Sept, still nothing. This place is ridiculous and i would hate to be an artist trying to promote my work with fans and customers having this much of a problem just GETTING tickets.
Nice old fashion
Love coming to this theater for an old fashioned feel. I love the movies here too.
Shivdeep12397@gmail.com
Best indie cinema in the city! Great programming, nice space, has a worn charm but not rundown. Good popcorn for reasonable price too.
Great little theater in the heart of the city. Classics design and layout, but with modern technology. Seats are comfortable, and they sell beer, what more could you ask for?
Best old theater in town
Loved it, it was like I stepped back in time, only problem hiking up the stairs to the bathroom ????
Nice place, good selection of European films.
Lovely small theatre in Little Italy
Great place to watch indie films with crowds that really dig the alternative film scene.
Nice
One our favourite Rep theatres!
This place is a local treasure. I love the programming. Lots of obscure and unusual films are shown here.
Cozy little theatre with comfy seats and tasty popcorn!
Had a great time at the Screen Queens presentation of Little Shop of Horrors. Someone in the row behind us was clearly not prepared for the running commentary of the hostess during the film. So make sure you know what sort of a movie experience you're in for!
Nice indie theatre
Great movie festivals;
Love the old movie theater
Lovely cinema and great movies.
Loved it here! Great atmosphere. Will be back soon!
Wonderfully quaint. Unlike any movie or show experience I've had in the past. Great events happen all the time. They understand how to sell an experience not available for download and I'm eager to buy it.
Location was hard to find. Very old vintage theatre. General public needs to google history of theater before attempting to locations
Great theater and service
Cool place for old school/vintage movies. Went for the Insomniac Film Festival '17 ????
This place is wonderful. Support local genre theatres!
So glad they've preserved this theatre
It was really good here, but our row was a little dirty. I didn't mind but my wife did a little. We'll go back because it was a pretty cool place.
Excellent movietheatre
Went here for an event and the screen behind the panelists kept blinking off and reloading, like every five minutes for two hours. Sorry, isn’t this a CINEMA? How can they not keep the screen on. I would think long and hard before attending another event at this venue.
Great venue
Pretty kool old cinema. I didnt even know about it until I went for the Paddling Film festival. It was clean and comfortable.
Amazing indie theatre! Went for the Blood in the Snow film festival and it was great. Love the old school feel for it. Popcorn was fresh and more reasonably priced than Cineplex. Staff was friendly a d always willing to help. Check out their schedule, they've got a great slate of 90s/00s films and programs. Definitely going to go back!
Beautiful old theater that plays nothing but gems from decades past. The selection might not always be for you, but if it is, it really is.
Nice
Always really cool programming, partnerships with great organizations, and decent popcorn to boot!
Saw oart of a comedy festival here! Great place to enjoy any kind of intimate performance!
Great place
a nice piece of the past!
A great old theatre! Actually comfortable chairs, though they look old!
Great movie venue. Bathroom is small...
Great small cinema with a variety of events and programming. Accepts debit/credit for payments and is wheelchair accessible, though the only washrooms I saw were on the 2nd floor (stairs).
Enjoyed the free movie Monday "Deep Blue Sea". Was blown away by the prices at the concession stand, $6 for a decent size drink and same for candy! Good thing the popcorn was free tonight.
They show a variety of films and truly love cinema. Check their schedule and see what actors or directors are visiting this month. You may be pleasantly surprised.
Its so nice to have this theatre in the neighborhood. I don't go to the movies that often but I like going here.
Excellent place to participate in National Film Day!! I really enjoyed myself!!
Smell of the popcorn is heavenly.
Easy to get to and great venue.
One of my favourite theatres in the city.
(Translated) We watch the French Croatia final. Go blues (Original) We watch the French Croatia final. Allez les bleus
Great spacious theatre with comfortable chairs... A flashback to the earlier cinema days. I attended a Caribbean Tales event/film screening here and enjoyed the venue choice.
A bit dingy, but has some charm.
Guy sitting in front of me covered all subtitles :D sonnot enough evaluation, but seats are comfortable:)
Decent venue for comedy shows. Drinks and popcorn could be better priced.
Great venue, excellent people.
Comfortable chairs. Screen elevated enough to watch film without any obstacle. Good sound system for Q&A and concert
The seats are comfortable, the ambiance is great and the popcorn is really good.
small and comfortable, the theatre is showing it's age but that's part of the experience isn't it?
Really old-styke movie theatre. We saw a comedy show here
Very nice theatre. Well kept. Modern bathrooms. Only we have to climb stairs. Not gor the older public.
Cool niche cinema.
Great cinema! The staff are incredible, the seats are comfy and the movies are wonderful.
Toronto theatre staple
There are comfortable and big halls. And service is good enough
Cant beat the prices
Great old fashion cinema in little Italy . Love it
I love this little theatre and all the events they host! Their concession stand is well priced compared to the big theatres.
Watched Wayne's World in 2017.
Cozy theatre with a lovely atmosphere. Popcorn and candy goes at a decent price. Alongside movies they also screen some films for major film festivals.
An excellent venue with eclectic programming. Great neighbourhood fixture. Real butter at no extra charge!
Such a great venue that plays a lot of cool, older films. Got to see a bunch of movies here that I would have never seen otherwise. They also do a ton of cool events. One of my favourites was when they put on a ramen documentary and teamed up with the ramen place just down the street to serve ramen before the show! Also one of the only places that I would go extra early to just to watch their cool trailers. Super friendly staff as well that are passionate about what they do.
Great music venue
Great neighborhood theatre with cool programming. Comfortable seats and alcohol is served.
The real thing!
By far one of my favourite theatre in the city! The staff is always kind and I love the different events that happen every month. The drinks and food are affordable (it’s on par with what you pay at other theatres). It’s nice to know you’re supporting an independent theatre and business that is invested in their community! From live drag commentary and shows, to hosting local artists and businesses at their events, the Royal is a true Toronto gem!
Staff friendly and helpful
Awesome theater. Saw the Found Footage Festival here was a great venue for it. I would come back to see another show here.
Adorable vintage theater.
(Translated) A timeless place that contrasts with the usual and impersonal decor of contemporary cinemas ... I love it! (Original) Un lieu hors du temps qui tranche avec le décor habituel et impersonnel des salles de cinéma contemporaines... j'adore !
Great local theater! Came here for a free showing of Elf as part of their free flick Monday promotions! Getting in was quick, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was great! I can definitely feel the local love as there was a gentleman who spoke to the crowd at the beginning to let us know of upcoming events and to thank us for coming which was great - you definitely won't get that from a big movie chain. To support the theater, we got some popcorn and some drinks. Cost is affordable with a large popcorn being $7 and a large pop at $6. You can also get alcohol which was a bonus! Beer and wine at $8 a can/cup and spirits were $10. Side note - it's tax inclusive! The only reason why I gave only 4 stars is because we were watching Elf - a kids movie. Unfortunately, the previews were R-rated with smoking, shooting, nudity, etc. I understand that they need to promote upcoming features but it was definitely inappropriate and I'm sure a lot of parents feel the same way,
Classic theatre. A Toronto staple
Good layout
Great theatre Art moderne.screens rare movies
Horribly unappealing venue
big fan of this place!!!
Good movies and comfy seats
Hipster movie theatre
Incredible theatre. Always something interesting and eclectic. Top notch.
Not a bad Cinema. Plays some awesome old films, horror nights, etc. Popcorn could use some love.
Small local theatre. Lots of broken seats but they offer discount tickets and cheap popcorn/drinks. Good place for an inexpensive date night.
