Nice old style theater
Even old some of cinemas are good, bar is very nice place to take a seat and drinks
Adorable old time theater that seats about 40 (if you're lucky, theres a chance of having the whole room to yourself) sound and picture quality of the movie were great. Free refills on popcorn and drinks (popcorn was a little stale and over buttered tho) overall a great place. They dont allow backpacks or outside food tho so dont bring those
It's still cheaper than going to the Cineplex
Quaint old-school theatre in a fun spot to take in a later-run film. On a Friday afternoon, you don’t have to fight off the crowds for a good seat. It’s a complete throwback to the largely forgot and lost theatres of the past. Projection quality is lacking. And a noisy fan in the theatre can overpower the movie soundtrack at times. Otherwise, a delightful experience.
Good venue
Stale popcorn
Bad place..
Before generic cookie-cutter Cineplex's, theatres were art deco palaces with neon marquees. Kingsway Theatre opened in 1939 and screened Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo (1958) in 35mm tonight (real FILM not a digital projection), complete with the old school Dolby and THX "cow" sound trailer, original 35mm theatrical trailers for "Lifeforce" and "Miracle Mile", the brilliant interview with Quentin Tarantino on digital vs. film projection, and even a Foghorn Leghorn Looney Tunes cartoon before the screening. The most authentic theatre experience I've had since the 90s.
Should go there at least once. Take kids really good and clean had the best experience...
Cold and damp inside but love the big screen and interesting movie choices.
Cramped. A local landmark destroyed.
A classic. Provides a great experience of a real movie theater.
Awful service. I'm all for independent businesses. But the popcorn Lady/Projectionist was not exactly friendly or supportive about technical issues during the screening.
Love this quirky independent theater . Bring a coat though...
But expensive for the quality but had the movie to ourselves ???? ????
I appreciate the effort folks give in trying to keep these old theatres going. Serving beer and wine WITH refillable buckets of popcorn works for me!
My favorite local movie theatre, and not only because they serve beer!
MICE under the seats, cold hot dog bread and not refunds. During Picachu movie I heard mouse squeals 3 times, the first time I thought was the movie. The second time, I use the lantern on my phone, but I did not see anything and then I saw a shadow near my seat, I used my phone again and I saw them...right away I told the kids to stand up, stop eating and to leave the room. I understand the policy of no refunds under some circumstances but not under NON - SANITARY conditions.
The Kingsway Theatre is a small rep theatre, on Bloor just around the corner from the Royal York TTC station, with an eclectic choice of movies. I most recently saw The Joker here, in a small screening room; my first movie here was Prince's Purple Rain, shown in the main theatre. The eclectic decor in the front rooms by the street, full of vintage cinema and pop-culture ephemera, is worth a browse.
Its nice and little cinima
I went there a few weeks ago with an acquaintance of mine and was very, very disappointed. I did not go there with high hopes or expecting it to be really nice or the opposite, but I took it as it came. The only reason I am giving this business one star is because the theater was as shown in the pictures, the facility was clean/well maintained, and the film being shown was in good working order and there were no technical difficulties. But the service, or the staff I encountered was unprofessional and extremely rude. That brought a rather tense vibe to the supposed joyous atmosphere. I mean a day before I went there I phoned the theater to inquire about one or two things and the person on the phone was very draggy/rude/depressing/mumbling sounding and then hung up on me before I could ask my last question. Never has that happened to me, so that alone was unprofessional. So the movie was okay, but because of the service I will never go to that theater again, and will certainly not recommend it to any of the people I know. I will in-fact discourage the idea. P.S. Also they do not know the traditional way of making their affogato drink.
I love the lobby decor. The manager is incredible! 6 stars out of 5
I go here maybe once a year to watch a movie and as long as you are in the skin theater the place is pretty nice it's open and is usually quite. The theater would be better off playing old classic movies I saw blade runner last summer and really enjoyed watching it on the big screen. The ticket prices are high for the quality of the theater, for at least a year they had scaffolding up in the screening area. There are a lot of rules since the owner is power hungry, I was getting take out at Kingsway fish and chips down the street and he came crashing in yelling about how people were bringing food into his theater. What are the owner of fish and chips going to do about it that's not their fault. The theater is pretty cosy with bench seats in the waiting area and a outdoor patio in the summer. It's not a bad place to grab a quick beer or even a ice cream when they sell it during the warmer months. If it wasn't for the owner and the lack of good movies to watch I'd be here more often.
Very nice and small theatre. It's nice to visit an older theatre because it gives you a different feeling than just any ordinary modern theatre. I would recommend coming here.
I support this place whenever I can. A nostalgic, neighborhood theater. Locally owned. Recently acquired a liquor licence.
This theatre is truly a hidden gem. Less crowded, relaxing atmosphere, with delicious buttery popcorn. A perfect movie date location, with a traditional feel to the building. Skip Cineplex and come here for a refreshing movie-goers experience.
Very old school, scheduling with google and website interface is very confusing though
Had a great time! Big old air conditioned theater with clean washrooms and friendly staff!
Went to see Spider-Man into the Spider-Verse with my family on Saturday afternoon and we all had a great time! Prices were decent and the popcorn was delicious, pops were cold. Service was impeccable, the lady was super nice, and free refills on popcorn. We went up to the screening room which was very comfortable and since we were the only family, we naturally spread out. Washroom was clean. Would highly recommend this theatre.
I’m sorry to say that I have to join the large unhappy band of patrons of this establishment who had a humiliating and embarrassing experience due to the extraordinarily bad and unwelcoming customer relations practices customarily exhibited by the front line staff and encouraged/endorsed by the owner/ manager. My sin was to enter the premises with a take out coffee in hand. And after a brief exchange I was peremptorily ordered to leave and NEVER to return‼️ In spite of having the appearance of being a charming retro theatre, This place is a disgrace to the good name of the wonderful Kingsway business Community. DO NOT GO THERE
Pretty nice, nostalgic theatre. Friendly service

Loved the retro feel of the cinema and the fact that it continues to play movies that you may have missed in big blockbuster theatres
After seeing BladeRunner2049, I made a joking comment about the theatre being freezing cold to give us the experience of being in the film. The foolishly arrogant little blonde person behind the counter, who called herself the "manager", told me that I was wrong and insisted that the theatre was 72 degrees. I then mentioned two big marks/tears on their screen, and that the cold was messing up their projection. was interrupted with an ignorant assertion that there was nothing wrong with the projection, even though I mentioned that the heat rising from the projector through the ice-cold air in front of the lens was causing (wavy-heat) distortions on the entire left side of the screen...She interrupted again and told me I didn't know what I was talking about, then stared blankly when I asked if that was all she had to say. There's also a huge floor-grate in the centre cross-aisle that blows noisy ice-cold air, that's louder than the film during the quiet dialogue! This is a terribly overpriced, and very poorly run theatre, with astoundingly rude staff. Do yourself a favour, and never set foot in this awful theatre!
Came to watch Blade Runner 2049, but it was freezing inside the theatre! Ruined the movie having to wear gloves and a hat and jacket and can still see my breath. My brother and two other customers were also cold. We asked for a refund or a poor google review. It’s an extreme cold weather alert and the owner shouted at us and told us we were wrong it was 72 degrees. Not nice.
Very intimate throwback to yesteryear. Glad to support independent cinema.
Expensive noisy and smells like mould
Extremely rude!
My 11 year old son and friend went by themselves to watch Lego Movie on Sunday aft. They ended up calling me part way through the movie to come pick them up due to the smell of the theatre and bad tasting soft drinks. When I arrived and asked for a refund, the unfriendly attendant told me they don't issue refunds. She claimed there was nothing wrong with the theatre and suggested kids just didn't like the movie. I then wanted to go see for myself but she said she couldn't allow it - I went anyways. It didn't seem too bad to me but I was only allowed to open the door for a few seconds. In any case, I will be staying away from this place in the future
Theatre was hot and stuffy, the seats were small and space was cramped. Did not care for the acoustics and food selection was very limited. Management should spend some of the high priced ticket money on upgrading seats, sound system ventilation and food service.
Excellent seating, modern screens, sound and projection equipment is state of the art. They serve alcohol,cafe/ bistro style. Totally cool spot.
I cannot speak to the quality of the screening since we never made it in. They have the same queue for snacks and tickets, causing a huge line up before the show. We were a small group, they sold tickets to half of us and then told the rest it's sold out after waiting in line for a while. When we asked to return the tickets, they refused. They were very aggressive and rude, and the tickets are really pricey for a small community theatre ($16)
Great place to watch old classics
Freezing! You need a duvet to keep warm. I still can't feel my toes!
Went for Friday Fright Night triple feature, had a blast, would recommend to any movie fan
Staff was very nice, if also very quiet. The videos of cats while you wait were cute. The atmosphere was very kitch, lobby music varying between 30s and 40s to electronica and synth. Lava lamp tables were very cool. Prices for concessions as high as you'd expect from a big theatre. Lost a star as I ordered a burger, and the tortilla chips I was served were burnt. Also the heater in the theatre was on through the movie and quite noisy.
Paninis were really good. they also had beer
Great theater, the staff are wonderful, and the popcorn is fresh. Worth two hours on TTC to get there from Scarborough.
One of the few old-timey movie theaters left in the Greater Toronto Region showing a diverse array of films and is now open for business.
Toronto's last independent cinema still holds up! Ordered a grilled cheese sandwich prior to the movie and it was so good. The sound is up to par and they have kooky disco lighting in the theatre that goes off once the previews start. Went to see 'Dune' three times just b/c I love it and wanted to support my favourite movie theatre. As an added bonus they played a scene from Lynch's 'Dune' prior to the 2021 version. Nice touch! Highly recommended :D
Great movies. Awesome atmosphere!
Great little place it's still like the old days lol
The back and forth between reviewers and owner of theatre are comedy gold!
A cozy little retro theatre with small screening rooms. Chairs are not the most comfortable but the experience is nice, intimate. I find the cost high for the quality of experience though.
Great place to have a beer or tea out on the patio before a movie. The musty basement-like smell made me feel like I was at a friend's house and was actually quite welcoming. As soon as the movie started the rattling and possibly half blown speakers set what I believed to be an authentic 1930's cinema vibe. Half way through the film my seat became locked in a half-sideways reclined position and I was able to get a decent workout in returning it to the original position. Lots of noise from the projection room reminds you that you are in fact not in your friend's basement, but at a real 1930's cinema. 5/5...would go again.
Sometimes true disappointment can be difficult to find but thank you Kingsway for allowing us to cross town without any indication that you wouldn't be screening "isle of Dogs" at 3:30 this Monday as advertised and at our rare and only opportunity to view it. It took so many other nearly impossible coincidences to align so flawlessly for the eventual let down to be so delicious. Choosing to "upgrade" your theatre at that moment was the perfect final touch.
Cute, kitschy atmosphere ... the attendant was amazing - enthusiastic, informative and fun. A terrific all-round retro experience!
You can see a movie here without many previews, so that is nice. Very small screen in quite the compact upstairs theatre. Nice people and reasonable prices. Worth doing if they have a movie that pulls you in.

Best rep cinema in the city
Love this place ! Old school theatre , a real throwback . I went to the Free Friday Fear and it was great ! Free refills of popcorn and soda and they serve alcohol as well . I will be going again and recommend this place .
Cool little old-time theatre. Good food and nice atmosphere. If you want high definition, huge screens and surround sound this is not the place for you though.
I am stunned by the responses of this owner. It's a licenced bar NO BACKPACKS---- sorry stoog, the two don't go hand in hand so I suggest not responding to people like they are stupid. And "NO CHEETOS"? as a response to many complaints? Really? What's your point?
Not bad, not great. The lady at the front doesn't have the best people skills or much of a sense of humor. The theatres are surprisingly large, seats recline which is great. This place doesn't accept debit which can be an inconvenience to some. I can understand why some would say it's cold inside. My only issue is the premium theatre pricing in a non premium environment, overall it's decent.
After reading the reviews that said the movie was late, the theatre was cold and the staff were rude, I couldn't help but laugh when I had the exact same experience! Very sad that the owner is responding to these criticisms in such an ugly fashion. Not worth the elevated ticket price, which otherwise would have been justified if the hospitality had been anywhere near as charming as the theatre itself.
Love this place. Yes there are rules. Don't come if you believe that you are too privileged to follow them.
The Kingsway Theatre will always had a special place in my heart and my childhood. Nostalgic doesn't cover it when I think of this special little cinema. Go visit it if you've never, theatres like the Kingsway is obviously rare nowadays, it's a special place. My parents would take us here when we were little, I'm talking mid-80s onwards, in large part because the Cineplexes and Famous Players of the world were a little too rich for our blood and we didn't mind waiting a couple of months or so for the 2nd runs. Very fond memories. My friends and I would hit the comic store right next door ("Excalibur"), buy some comics, and then catch a flick. Great times. Simpler times. Just looking at it (and the facade, interior, screen, seats, food etc. has improved EXPONENTIALLY since I was a kid of course) transports me back. Lovely. #thekingsway #movietheatre #thekingswaytheatre
I believe in supporting local business and old cinemas, but I need to admit that I have never meet so unfriendly and rude customer service in my life as in the Kingsway theater. It is so bad, that do not deserve details.
Unless you can't see a particular movie anywhere else, the admission is not worth the small screen with muffled sound in the upper auditorium.
Expensive prices but they give free refills on everything.
A rare treat these days to have an independently-owned theatre in your neighbourhood... with a liquor licence!
Went to see Once Upon A Time in Hollywood with my son. They would not let him in with his knapsack, so he took it back to the car and came back with only his water bottle- the grouchy clerk made him hand over the bottle, dumped out his contents (he only had water in it) and then filled it with their own tap water- I requested a seniors ticket and she checked my ID. It was so cold I shivered through the whole movie. The level of paranoia surrounding management’s fear of people bringing in their own food or possibly ripping them off for a seniors ticket ( I wasn’t) makes the experience unacceptable. While I would like to see local theatres survive, the arbitrary rules and open hostility makes me wonder about the future of the Kingsway theatre
Comfortable seats you can have beer or wine good food best kept secret
Great place, great prices, supporting the local economy, steps from the ttc, not many crowds of people, a very unique experience!!!
The talk about bad service is true. First time I was there the owner was very rude to a woman carrying a large purse. Said she could not bring it in. Also rude to me. Said I was holding up the movie and either get in or get out. Then tonight they were closed despite saying on their website they were open. Took the subway from midtown just to arrive and find they were closed. Way to update your site. I won't be back.
Love our local theatre. It was dormant for years until, thankfully, the current owner resurrected it. We are grateful for that. We attend regularly and appreciate the giant screen, the clarity of image and audio. Owner rightfully puts emphasis on movie quality and movie experience. (The whirring fan and the musty smell are the only drawbacks, and I am sure that they will be solved eventually.) Hope the theatre survives. I have never had any problem with the owner, but he needs to calm down with the comments and anger. If they continue, inevitably they will catch up with the reputation and success of the operation. KEEP COMING TO THE KINGSWAY TO ENSURE FUTURE SUCCESS OF THIS TREASURE!
It's - 15C° and this theatre don't have heating.
One of the few remaining neighbourhood cinemas in North America. Steps from the subway, hand crafted cocktails, iconic candy and popcorn. Friendly and professional staff. Well priced admission and concessions! Wonderful seating and ambiance. Carefully selected films that cover a range of topics and audiences. Vintage architecture and a screening room! Always looking for an excuse to slip away and enjoy a flick here...
Toilets were gross - clearly hamdt been cleaned in a very long time. Main theatre nice and big and spacious, but a bit grungy.
The movie theater was great!
Absolutely terrible experience despite our expectation. Lady at the front had poor customer service skills, and was unpleasant. Decor-wise, the entire theatre could use an upgrade. We were the only two people in the theatre on a Sunday afternoon. I would never go back there again, we left feeling quite annoyed having paid $16 each.
Cool experience. Something different then the ciniplex and there's a bit of history here too. It has an old fashion feel. We sat upstairs to see Harriet, the theatre was very small up there. Unfortunately most seats were taken we had to sit in the front row which is extremely close to the screen. You will likely have a stiff neck afterwards. The food is reasonably priced the tickets are a bit high tho at 16$
The Kingsway is an Etobicoke classic. Great movies, even better popcorn, and you can even have a beer in the theatre.
Descent sound & picture quality. They offer free refills of overpriced canned soft drinks and stone cold, stale popcorn )made at the beginning of the first shift that came in) I guess that's why everyone brings their own snack
Cozy quaint and full of history.
(Translated) Wonderful place (Original) Maravilloso lugar
Gross. Stop playing VAXXED. ITS FAKE SCIENCE.
Had a wonderful time watching Train to Busan 2: Peninsula, here. The popcorn was tasty and the seats were comfy, and projection and sound quality was great too! Although capacity is 300, they are limiting to 50 tickets during the pandemic, so you can go knowing that you'll have ample room to distance yourself safely from others. I do hope more seats can fill up as independent cinemas like this are hard to come by in a world of multiplexes. This place is a gem!
Terrible experience. Tiny theatre, no way to tell from website that the movie was being shown in a 20-seat "screening room". Movie quality was horrendous, virtually unwatchable - muddy and dark. Sound was sub-par. The price was also unreasonably high. I truly regret my decision to try this theatre.
Drove from Scarborough 30 minutes with my wife to get to the cinema. Bought Starbucks coffee our my way, as we usually do when going to a cinema. Girl on the counter mentioned that they have their own coffee and next time it would be better to buy theirs. We agreed and bought movie tickets. Minute later the manager came and said we have to throw away our coffee or leave the cinema. We returned our tickets and left the cinema. Not sure what else the manager achieved by his attitude, except the returned tickets, unhappy customers and a negative review. The manager keeps mentioning that it is a 1939 cinema, which itself is good. But the customer service appears to be of 1939 as well, which should be updated to current standards, if the business wants to carry on or even prosper. Edit after manager response: 1. We clearly stated that we didn't know about the restriction and next time will not come with purchased coffee. 2. You asked us to throw away the Starbucks coffee we had or return the tickets. We returned our tickets. 3. Even if you asked, do you really think anyone would go outside at -15 to finish their coffee? 4. Yes, Cineplex and every other cinema we went before had no issues.
It's a neat spot, and I hope it sticks around. Needs a little TLC in the theatre though. Pricy, but I get that, considering its location and limited run of movies. Being in the neighbourhood, we see what's playing there before Cineplex...support local business.
It's one of the greatest theatres in Toronto. My dad went there when he was young and thought it was a wonderful, cool theatre too. It's definitely a Toronto landmark.
Snarky owner with... Questionable social media postings. Slightly in disrepair. Inconsistent heating, lighting and sound. Has character but not worth cost. Also showing religious propaganda film Unplanned multiple times a day in future. Won't be returning. Edit: owner has also come to me on Facebook now to harass me about my review.
It was kinda weird cause it looked like It wasn't a theater
Feels like you've transported back in time. Such a great date idea.
charming theatre and bar with nostalgic ambiance and a nice balance of first run films and cult classics, as well as a free horror double feature every Friday. Definitely an underrated and quiet little hangout and one of the few remaining independent cinemas in Toronto. Love this neighbourhood treasure!
It is an old pin up looking theatre. You feel like in the 60's but comfortable like in the 2018. :)
Some times you can see some Old movies for free, wich is nice. Popcorn is medium flavour... Thank you ????????
Indie theatre, something different
Great cheap place to go to watch.
That tiny screening room is a joke. Worst picture quality. And ridiculous at $16 a ticket.
What a horrible place. The theatre was freezing cold (Sunday March 29). Generally I take of my outer coat in a cinema, however, was forced to wear it inside and still felt more cold than I have all winter long. There is a distinct smell of mold as soon as you enter this theater (the downstairs larger auditorium and mold is evident on the walls, so if you are allergic please do not go here). It was difficult to make contact as no email is provided on the Kingsway page. Finally called on the phone, being rudely interrupted with loud shouting the whole time I was trying to explain my predicament. He ended the call by shouting obscenities to me which I unfortunately do not feel able to repeat here, telling me (shouting loudly in a very angry voice) "If you don't like it go somewhere else and don't come back here again." and then I was cut off as he put the phone down on me. I have just seen a response from Rui Pereira and I have to disagree, the movie did start late and we had to wait, even the cashier (very nice girl) apologized saying the credits were running very long and she would take us in just as soon as they were done. My suggestion would be to have this manager replaced ASAP as he is getting his theatre a very bad reputation. I for one will be letting my friends know and will not be back there any time soon. I have never encountered such a poor and abusive customer service interaction in my life. Yes it really was that bad.
Stay away - I was pushed out the door of the cinema and refused entrance whilst my friend was shoved aside by the manager - this incident occurred because I was holding a takeout coffee cup when I entered. I was focussed on the no washroom signage I had seen and meeting friend inside and so became defensive when the ticket taker refused me entry. I offered to drink the coffee quickly and moved back towards the door. It was a shocking how the manager and ticket taker escalated the incident to yelling and pushing. Unfortunately the theatre is leased to this person, the owners of the building may be powerless here. The neighbouring merchant asked us to report this incident to the police and them called 911 when this person escalated to yelling threats outside of the theatre. As we departed a passerby confirm we he had been shoved by this same angry manager. What an unfortunate trip to the Kingsway.
Excellent movie theater
Good if you just want see the movie
Fun time
Yes I have read the reviews . Yes I may be bias as a student years ago we always attended the kingsway dive . The make over since is great and it’s walkability fantastic . The staff are responsive to hellos and smiles and I really love the old school feel . We have gone some nights and had just us in the theatre ,a private showing so special in a big city like Toronto . So for all the negative issues , yes life happens , maybe a little more 1940 ish attitude from when the old soul was built , read some life style dairies of that era . Walking with your wife and kids theatre, church ,diner , some slow time and conversations all the family romance is all the matters . The kingsway we need to support it And keep available to enjoy .

Awesome throwback spot if you’re feeling a retro vibe over staying in and watching a flick. Price is a little steep for the tickets and concession, but you can grab a beer here and bring it into the movie, which is cool. Limited showings as well, so you’ll usually have to keep your eyes peeled for a movie on your watchlist. Still a pretty fun and different spot over the multiplex theatres.
Smaller rooms have a nice, cozy feel to them, and the larger auditoriums are great. Prices are really good, popcorn is great, and refills are free. Can't beat that.
Incredible experience. From the fantastic decoration to the 70's commercials at the start of the movie, everything was brilliant. So much better and fun than a modern theatre.
Thoroughly enjoyed the film and the theatre:) Civilized - you can have a drink, enjoy a film, and a clean washroom for a reasonable price. Well kept secret!
Lovely cinema
Charming -- and you probably won't have to suffer temporary blindness from an oblivious jerk's cellphone during the movie. There's some living-room style chairs at the back.
atmosphere!
First time at this theatre. Love the look of this theatre, the staff were very friendly and accommodating. Less than thrilled about the display experience at the upstairs, smaller room. I can't remember a more pixelated movie experience, and the sides of the film were cut off. If you're going to be a retro theatre, you should really take the time to give the films the right presentation. A brighter, higher quality projector, and proper adjustments for the aspect ratio would go a long way. The lobby/bar area is very cool, lots to look at and enjoy. Will happily attend movies here in the future, especially to see 35mm in the larger auditorium.
I carry a side bag with Insulin and my emergency Rx. I was told I cannot go into the theater with it ! (I have been in major museums in the world and all types of venues in this city - without any difficulty). I believe any place can have their own policies (although this one can be questionable) nevertheless, that was not the point here.. the uncalled-for rudeness of the attendant was absurd. It made it very easy to leave to never go back.
I had a coffee in my hand when I walked in to buy a movie ticket, casually sipping on it while I was waiting for my service. The lady at the counter told me my coffee was not allowed in, to which I replied “I will take it outside, can I please buy the ticket first?” Then this man came out of nowhere and practically yelled at me to take the coffee outside. I explained to him that was my intention after I had bought the ticket. He was determined to refuse me service as long I had that cup of coffee in my hand. I walked out dumbfounded and speechless at the obnoxious way in which this theatre treats its customers. I would like to give them 0 stars or less if possible.
We went on a hot day, and prices have gone up. But it is a fully licensed bar, you can also take you drinks in. Great place to see movies that have gone from the cineplex. While we waited it was hot inside the lobby. But that wasn't all his fault. The theatre was cool and the seats comfy.

It's a real cultural experience coming here, a breath of fresh air from the corporate, must-be-modern, must-be-mainstream Toronto where I have to live these days. I stepped from the staid streets into a wonderful, adventurous environment, with whimsy and nostalgia wherever my eyes looked. The screening room itself was cozy and comfortable, the pre-movie screen entertainment was fun, with zero corporate ads and an incredible music soundtrack of obscure music from the 60s. My only complaint is that there was a noticeable hum coming from the speakers that never went away, and was only not noticeable when there was a minimum level of sound coming from the movie. During the quiet moments of the movie that hum came to the forefront. Not a huge deal...just a heads-up for the management. Maybe it detracted a tiny bit from my movie enjoyment, but nowhere near a significant amount. Overall, I really enjoyed my Kingsway Theatre experience.
I like to frequent local establishments like this one but man, what a negative environment. Upon entering, one is bombarded with big "NO" signs everywhere, as in NO backpacks, NO outside food or drink, NO water bottles, and others that I can't even recall. There are at least half a dozen or so "NO" signs from the entrance to the cash. Not even a please or thank you on any of them. But the grilled cheese sandwich was yummy.
Nice to visit this theater. Got to watch my movie in the viewing room. Very interesting experience. Can't wait to come back.
Such an amazing movie theatre, I love the free Friday classic horror movies... One can grab a beer or two, a large pop corn bucket that you can refill as many times as you want, there's hot dogs, paninis and many other treats. And the staff is very nice, so to me is just a perfect Friday night panorama with friends. Highly recommended. Tip: is just a few steps from Royal York subway station, so even if it's raining or snowing you can go there by TTC so easily.
Great service, fun showings and a lovely retro feel! Really easy to get to as well, it is very close to Royal York station.
Want to watch a great movie at an old-style, "normal" theater? This is the place!
Two screens. One has a large seating capacity
Don't let media lies and race-baiters sway your opinion of this quaint local and independent theatre. Friendly staff and decent prices make visits to this establishment a real treat. Highly recommend.
Drift back in time to a classic 50ies movie theatre
Great repertoire theatre with an interesting ambience - but the cafe food is lacking.
Great local cinema old style seats and very comfortable
Great theater!!
Apparently, the 'no backpack' policy is used when they just don't feel like screening the movie due to too few tickets sold. Staff is rude to begin with and their behaviour will descend to absurd if backpack policy is not working. Waste of time!
I would only like to corroborate what Jordan S. mentioned about the upstairs theatre. The picture quality in that particular theatre is really very poor. I appreciate that the owner is willing to screen films such as Embrace of the Serpent (which I was looking forward to for its supposedly brilliant cinematography), but it is a shame to show these works to the public in such low fidelity. The pixelation, in particular, was egregious. Unjustifiable at $13.00. Or even half that rate.
I got to watch Citizen Kane, the greatest film ever made, in theatres and this location is pretty darn good. The screen is large and the sound system is fantastic, with a booming bass and crystal clear dialogue, but the seats aren't very good. The first one that I sat on was broken, the seat was pointing toward the floor, and the second seat was better, but still felt kind of weak. Aside from that, I can definitely see myself coming back here.
Very nice little theatre, popcorn and all. ???????? Classy old school, nice sound system.

Great place to see movies that didnt make it to cineplex. The food and the atmosphere are what make this theatre so special
Small and cozy. I absolutely adore this place
This place is amazing. All the love and nostalgia of an old cinema, with quality films and fantastic food and drink options. Highly recommended.
Great movies old fashioned settings
If you want something different then this is the place
A great neighbourhood theatre. Close to the Royal York station. The vast majority of negative comments have appeared in the last week after the unfortunate situation with management and this so called actress from the CBC. Anything older than a week bad reviews are few and far between. Coincidence or collusion? You decide. P.S. After the Boston bombing a few years ago many public institutions in the USA refused to let patrons in with backpacks as a security measure.
Fun kitschy old theatre. A bit expensive when you get stuck with the small screen upstairs.... There should be a discount for those tickets.
Owner - you're my hero. Have been and will be back again and again.
Comfey seating, bar, good selection of films...
One of the last independent theatres in Toronto with a great old time feel. Not your IMAX experience, but a cosy casual movie night. There’s always a seat!
This bar theatre is good but not very spacious.. the one last row executive seats are comfortable but a bit smelly.. Sound quality is average.
A treat date night with my husband - we love the wild choice of films, the fun little side theatre upstairs, the ability to have a beer or cocktail before and during the film, and the quaint old theatre. Popcorn should have REAL butter though...
Nice indie cinema, with an eclectic mix of films.
Great venue. Should open a half hour before show time.
I would go back, despite the odd hum in the upstairs small theatre (through the entire movie) and the freezing cold inside temperature, if the place wasn't so rude. Racist or just rude? Either way, I wish someone else would buy it and make it friendly place. The actual theatre and lobby are fun and nostalgic.
My favourite theatre! It is the theatre I choose first. I love the small upstairs theatre too. It would be great if it could be better organized inorder for the experience to be more pleasant though, especially when waiting for a movie to start. The lounge seating should always be open and available. It would be great if there is at least one more staff member there to speed the service up, so they are more relaxed and welcoming to their customers. My comments are with good intentions because this theatre could be the very best around !
Great setting and atmosphere! This cinema has a very retro look that is vanishing in this age of soulless multiplexes. They also play quality independent and non-mainstream movies. I like the little cafe attached to the cinema...good place to chill out before the movie starts. The tickets are a bit pricey but in light of supporting a local business that provides a beautiful space to watch quality entertainment, I'll pay up as it's worth it.
It sounds like I have had a similar experience to many of the reviewers. On the one hand, I have enjoyed being able to walk to and see good movies in a theatre in our neighbourhood - and I think that I must have escaped the ' no backpack' enforcer on those occasions. On the other hand, I remain astounded by the response I received last night when I messaged the theatre about not being able to take my small backpack (which is really my purse) into the theatre. Like other reviewers, I was told about the policy and after two exchanges, was asked to "not come back again". Further exchanges from me on Facebook were then blocked. Message received loud and clear - this is not a welcoming place.
DISGUSTING treatment by the theatre's "manager". I brought in a coffee not realizing that no outside drinks were allowed. A very ill-mannered woman who was working the box office came charging over, announcing to everyone in the lobby in an almost spiteful tone, that I have to finish my coffee outside. My husband very calmly told her that we understood and she didn't have to be so rude about it. I took a sip of my coffee on the way to the garbage and threw it out. We proceeded to wait in line for our tickets (10 minutes or so). When it was our turn, she got on the phone, began whispering to someone, and then very smugly told us she would not be selling us tickets. We asked "why?" and she said, "because you didn't like what I said to you." She then followed with "and if you don't leave I'm going to call the cops and have you charged with trespassing". I am actually still in shock by the level intolerance shown. It was not only humiliating but completely UNJUST. By the sounds of other reviews, this place has a track record of mistreating people. I am all for independent businesses but this place DOES NOT CARE ABOUT PEOPLE. I will NEVER step foot in this theatre again and I think you should do the same.
My wife and I went to watch Anomalisa on Valentine's Day. The heating in the theatre was broken and there was no notice posted. I ended up with a bad cold the next day. When we asked for our money back, the woman on the phone said we don't offer refunds after the first 15 minutes of the movie staring, and then she hung up. Wow. Worst movie experience ever.
Love to see that the revue cinemas still going. Cosy, don't expect too much, and just relax with a good movie.
Old fashioned, and just perfect,
Interesting selection of films A small upstairs auditorium and large main floor auditorium, both with tired cloth upholstery. Outside entry doors are locked until 15 minutes before shows start. Good selection at concession stand of food and drinks and free refills on popcorn and soft drinks.
Super annoying strong lights
Wonderful experience
Very nice and comfortable but small.
i like the glow tables best place in toronto. 70 degrees fahrenheit- very comfortable temperature. service was pure class. the ice cream had perfect texture, color, taste, and temperature. love u bye
Geeze people, it's the big city, time to grow a thicker skin. Are you there to see a movie or date the owner? "I will never visit your establishment again!!"...As if you ever had in the past...silly.
Great old fashioned theater. A real experience. Loved it
I'll never go back. It was freezing cold inside the theater and the screen was terrible. Thick vertical lines appearing on the screen all through the movie that ruined the whole experience.
I had exact same issue re knapsack. My purse is a small bag not knapsack and yet it was requested by staff to be taken when the woman behind me had a huge purse bag that could have fit anything the management is worried about being brought into the théâtre in. The staff was rude about my bag and gave no good reason why. I asked for a number to call management and she declined I called and left a voice mail for the manager and heard nothing back. And there is NO sign that says you cant bring your bag knapsack into theatre. The sign only says no outside food drinks. I have told many friends and family about my experience and they are not going to this theatre after hearing how rude staff was..how I was treated like a booze carrying teenager and what a bizzare thing to institute.
Terrible place to watch a movie
"Beautifully Iconic" is my words for this theatre. Its been part of my life for over 50yrs. Some of those negative comments are upsetting. Pls respect the importance of keeping some of the old and iconic as part of the Kingsway past and future.
Old theatre. Great place to enjoy a beer while watching a movie!
The girl serving the popcorn and drinks was amazing and quickly she had the stuff ready for us.
I went with a friend to see Hidden Figures last night (which I've already seen). I've been to the Kingsway maybe twice before and have always been in the large / main theatre. Last night the film was being screened in a very small room upstairs. That was a bit of a shock, but the real disappointment was with the absolutely terrible sound quality (muffled, with lots of dialogue inaudible) and bad picture quality (too dark). To top it off a fan was blowing cool air down on me 80% of the time. The admission price should be a fraction of what they're charging..but it's not about the $ for me because I'll never sit through another film in such a dinky, sub standard theatre. I'm glad I saw the film originally at Queensway Cineplex. It was such a different experience. I try to support independent theatres when possible, I planned to go to The Revue last night but my friend ran late so we opted for The Kingsway.
I had a very unpleasant experience last Monday, March 28 when I went with a friend to a 3:05 p.m. showing of Danish Girl. The woman who was serving food and also selling tickets told me that I would have to check my backpack. I thought that was an odd request and I asked what the rationale for this was.Was it because customers brought in food and drink concealed? She simply stated that "It's the rule". As we were discussing this, a male employee or perhaps the owner, said that the KingswayTheatre was a private business and the rule about checking one's backpack was " the rule and if I didn't like it, I could leave." I was shocked at such rude behaviour that I sat down at a table to collect myself and discuss what had happened. When I pulled out my water bottle to take a drink, this bald headed man approached me and said:" You'll have to empty that water bottle if you want to go in!" Both my friend and I vowed we would never go back to a business that had treated me in such a rude way.
needless to say, this theatre showcases the best russian films
Nice quaint little theater. Good snacks and cold beer. Great alternative to big box theatres.
Rude staff. Was told i couldn't bring in a knapsack and i asked why. She just stared at me. I ask again and she says "no particular reason". The price of a movie is much than anywhere else in Toronto.
Extremely bright flashing lights outside. Distracting to the point of being a safety hazard. Get rid of the ridiculously bright flashing lights!
Built in 1939...gives you a very cozy feeling...especially the small theater on the 2nd floor...plus you can enjoy a beer
I really hope it stays
it is family day febuary 18 2019 after 4 and i am sitting in the lobby. i am disabled and i asked the young girl questions and every time she gave me a extremely rude answer, sometimes she just ignored me. i dont know if she is uncomfortable around disabled people but i am very disappointed and i can see by the reviews other people are not happy about her. however the theatre is fabulous and i am so happy to see a retro cinima. Because I posted this review the manager kicked me out of the theatre 10 minutes before the movie. I am going to spread the word
I have been going to the Kingsway for many years and never had a negative experience. I have very positive memories of this cinema. Years ago it was the only cinema that screened silent and classic films. Some posters on here have made comments that patrons should take their business to Cineplex. I totally disagree. Most of the staff at Cineplex especially the Varsity and Yonge Street locations are extremely ill mannered, do not know how to serve customers with respect and are not accommodating towards persons with physical disabilities. On the matter of patrons who complain about their knapsacks, perhaps you should leave all that stuff at home anyways, you are there to see a film not to place your knapsack on the floor where others can trip over it or on a seat where a customer may wish to sit. I can count the many times that ill mannered patrons have behaved in such an ill mannered way towards myself and other customers, so leave your knapsack, your cell phone, your baby, your tennis rackets and the contents of your house at home. Follow the rules and grow up already and stop behaving like you are entitled to everything in the universe just because you purchased a movie ticket.
I love having this theatre in Etobicoke! It is one of the few landmarks that I remember as a kid and still enjoy seeing as I pass by on Bloor. I always check to see what movies they will be showing because you know it will always be a pleasant surprise. Without these types of theatres, where else could we see different movies (other than the mainstream theatres that all have the exact same, usually lame thing)? The collective experience is even better and the surprise of a curated selection of films is also very valuable! This theatre brings old movies, world cinema, documentaries and many other interesting, thought-provoking, engaging movies that you will never see in the regular theatres! They provide a window into the world outside of the ubiquitous Hollywood film-making perspective that has snuffed out other cinematic voices to serve its own need to dominate the industry in North America. For the people that complain about the theatre itself, although I agree somewhat that this older building could use some reno, and have had the film stop during a movie. So what? Its old school and you are not going there for the grand interior, latest seating and computerized everything....that's the beauty of it. I actually was amused when the film guy cussed when the film stopped (what, we don't do that home?) then an audience member called out " get the film back on!" and the guy called out "I am!". SO? This is the big drama that people can't stand anything that is not perfect, comfy? Big deal! It is part of a community and quietly served to entertain, teach, engage the viewers through the selection of movies it offered to Etobicoke and we should make sure that it doesn't leave our community. I have read the comments about the owner...again, understand too that if the rule is not to bring big bags, it makes sense, for many reasons (safety, licensing issues, etc). Prices? This is not a high turnover type business, like a coffee shop. As a business-owner I know that the property taxes for commercial properties are ridiculous and operating/maintenance too so I am willing to forgo some comforts for the ability to see an excellent selection of films we will not see anywhere else (especially the west end of Toronto).
a great cheap place to go-almost always quite, and free refills for popcorn!
This is how movies are meant to be shown! Great art deco ambiance here.
Expensive
It is a film experience, rather than just a film. Yes, I am a 'real' person; no, I don't know the people who run this place...but I know that it's a tough market and I would rather support the independents and the people who keep tradition alive. Kingsway: Believe in the magic.
Went to see Book Club here. Good size theatre but expensive for a private facility. Clean and has a full concession stand.
Comfortable seats, excellent sound, good sight lines. Probably doesn't need its air conditioning on in January, though.
Interesting theatre.
Quaint throw back theatres that hold as few as 50 people. Dolby sound. Good prices for beer, liquor and wine. Generous popcorn servings. Tired but good for a repertoire theater.
Have been coming here for 35 years, and hope the Kingsway will survive, but...the sound system is starting to get less sharp, the noisily blowing air in the heating system above is quite distracting, and ticket prices are on the high side now.
I can understand why there are polarizing views on this place. I went last night and had a great time. While the woman at the ticketing counter was a little less than friendly I chalked it up to it being late and she probably had a long day. From the other reviews it looks like this is an ongoing problem. I loved the main theatre, it was the perfect space for what we were seeing and the sound / picture was good. The movie was 2.5 hours and I never felt uncomfortable in the seats. After the film I was in the washroom and I heard yelling, I came out and the manager was yelling that he was calling the cops on someone who I assumed had just left ...reading more prior reviews it seems like this happens a lot. What gives?!?!! This place is so cool and better yet not too busy. Kingsway theatre stop alienating your guests, we’re rooting for you. All we’re asking for is basic customer service. To be clear, I really enjoyed myself, and who doesn’t love a bit of excitement. I will be back but hope that my next visit is a bit more positive all around.
Mice ruuning around the floor in the middle of the movie. Never again going there!
Look at all you losers virtue signalling over that stupid article about Olunike Adeliyi's "experience". All the negative reviews came this very week when that story came out. Looks like she got the additional publicity she wanted.
Great local theater. Good food and drink menu that is reasonably priced. Top notch service too! Highly recommended!!
If you want to be mistreated, that's the place to go...Never again!
Last time I was at the theatre I had to watch the film in a frightfully claustrophobic room upstairs with very poor air quality. The worst part was having to sit in a seat with broken springs. When I called today to see if the movie Mother was being screened downstairs, I explained my disappointment with my last visit. The very rude young woman on the other end told me that there were no seats in disrepair and even corrected my pronunciation of the movie I was inquiring about. Unbelievably rude. Hope she owns the place because if she's an employee, she's a little too cocky for business.
On March 2 my husband and I visited The Kingsway cinema, anticipating an enjoyable evening. While my husband parked, I entered the lobby, noting the signs stating that no food or drink nor backpacks were permitted in the theatre. Before I could ask for the tickets, the girl said curtly “no food or drink can be brought into the cinema” to which I said “OK, fine.” She repeated herself and told me to read the signs. I was puzzled at the tone and implication of her manner. I opened my arms wide and said “You can see that I have no food or drink with me. I am trying to buy food and tickets.” She dialed the manager, telling him “the customer does not like what I told her,” then saying to me she was instructed not to sell me any tickets! She again trotted out the “no food or drinks” mantra. Exasperated, I asked to see the manager/owner. When he appeared, without looking directly at me, he blurted out “This is a licensed establishment, it’s not negotiable.” (What?) He ran off, leaving me confused, angry, and embarrassed. Never have I been subjected to such a humiliating and uncalled-for experience in all the years I have gone to a cinema. What kind of establishment treats patrons this way? I found the whole display of an uncaring attitude, shoddy rudeness, and arrogant disdain towards a customer to be quite unbelievable. I did not fall into any of the “NO” categories on the signs and, even if I did, is this your idea of customer relations, Kingsway? When my husband returned and went into the theatre to determine why I had been treated so badly, he got the same response from the owner (Rui Pereira) as I had, plus a warning about calling the police (before again scurrying off). Hello, I think we have a problem here, Mr. Pereira. We rented the movie and watched it at home later that evening, saving the $60 or so we would have gladly spent at The Kingsway had we been welcome there. There are always other cinemas to visit, Mr. Pereira, but never again The Kingsway.
It needs some upgrading
Decent
I saw a movie tonight at Kingsway Theatres. Unfortunately, when I arrived, I was told that I had to leave my backpack at the cash. It was my handbag, with my wallet and other essentials, so I wasn't happy about leaving it at the cash. There is a sign that says backpacks and big bags must be left at the front. My friend had a big bag (as big as my backpack) but she was allowed to bring her bag in. I showed them everything that was in my backpack but still wasn't allowed to bring it in. I wasn't happy. They provided me with a plastic bag and said I could dump my things in there to take my essentials with me, while they'd keep my backpack. They didn't provide me with a receipt; it was very informal. If it's a policy, it should be more formalized. When I asked the clerk at the front for the owner's contact information including name and number, she said that she couldn't provide that information. That's not good customer service. The movie also started 15 minutes later than its posted start time. The movie itself was good but for the price (which is more than Cineplex), I expect a better or at least an equal experience. Unfortunately, it wasn't.
The upstairs room is not good at all for the price
Great retro theatre..licenced too n showing top movies n documentaries.
No complaints here had to see a film, saw it and then went home via the 76 A bus
Some of the best programming in Toronto. A real gem.
I went to see the afternoon movie on Sunday and the theatre was freezing...I have never been so cold sitting in a theatre, my niece left an hour before the movie was over because she was so cold. There was nobody to speak to, only the concession girl, so my sister phoned to speak to the manager, he was extremely rude, he told her to he wasn't concerned and not to come back! He doesn't have to worry, none of us will be back and nobody I know will be going there either. The first thing we all noticed was that it was more expensive than the regular theatres but it's a nice old place so weren't worried. Then, after we'd waited for 1/2 hour as the movie was running late, we walked in and all three of us, independently, commented on the smell of mold. We sat away from that side of the theatre but then it was so cold it distracted your attention away from the movie!
I must say . I really love going to this place. All the negative review iv seen on hear are very unfair. ( iv been a number of times and had a blast with friends or seeing stuff on my own. (Mad max on 35mm was amazing! ) im guessing the negative reviews are from unhappy customers that really like to complain. What you get from going hear is a old cinama experience. Sure its a little more to see a flix hear. But when you factor in the costs ( they have a bar and food) and a small but devoted staff thats always happy to surve you. ( they even brought my food and drink to my seat when the movie started as they were busy.!!.) . If we don't saport places like this I fear we won't have them in the future. They also play stuff that other cinamas don't get. Keep old cinamas alive or they will be turned into Tim Hortons or gas stations and we will lose more then just a place to go. We will lose a part of our city
I love Fear is Free Fridays! Free retro horror flicks every Friday night. The triple bills are the most fun.
So I just left this theatre after not even 5 minutes into a show and I’m very disappointed. I’ve wanted to see The Favorite for some time now so seeing it at the Kingsway Cinema on a Saturday was perfect but paying $16 for the smallest screen ever and for pretty uncomfortable seating (the female manager(?) at the front kiosk called them rocking chairs? But it felt more like the seats were broken) is ridiculous. I’m all for supporting small business but the screen wasn’t much bigger than a home tv and had about 20 seats total. I’ve been to this theatre before and I have never been to this screening room or seen a “theatre screen” so small. So I was really upset to learn that the manager (?) said no refunds which I understand but wrote on my ticket that I can come back for a different show any time in pen. The issue that gets me, is that she refused to give me her name after I told her I couldn’t read her signature?? Apparently she doesn’t give out her name. Weird.....and overpriced. Too bad, I’ve been going here since I was a teenager and it was always a fun place to go.
I am very sure you have an excellent establishment. I am sorry for your business, as it's being ruined. :-(
Classic
We went to Kingsway Theatre for the first (and the last) time last week. I was ready to ignore the expensive ticket price, moldy smell, and not very decent picture quality but having a theatre with no heating is unacceptable, especially when it's -20 C outside. We had to wear our coats and still freezing. When the movie ended, I looked around and saw other people had their hats and gloves on. I wish I had read the reviews first. Looks like the heating was an issue even 2 years ago and nothing was done about it. On top of that, people got yelled at when they complained. It's such a disappointment when you think you are supporting a local independent theatre and the management does not care at all.
