REVIEWS OF Blue Bridge At The Roxy IN Esquimalt

Blue Bridge does extraordinary plays that talk about the human condition so eloquently.

Richard Epp

Always a treat to take in a play at the Blue Bridge Theatre. Their unique, recently-renovated space provides an exciting connection between audience and actor, and this company can be counted on to bring new work as well as classics to their stage: plays by Tennessee Williams, Harold Pinter and Neil Simon among others, as well as the magic of old-time radio drama. Hey and parking has never been a problem.

It's hard to rate a theatre because so much of the experience depends on the show you see. The seats here are old, but mostly comfortable and the concession is reasonably priced and equipped with the basics. There are venues in town I like more than The Roxy as well as venues I like less. Middle of the road.

It's hard for me to rate the Blue Ridge at the Roxy.. I am 44 now and have been going to this theater my whole life. My daughter loved it when it was the Roxy synagogue. So sad to see it go. I think of the Roxy as a cornerstone.

My friends and I had come to the Blue Bridge Repertory Theatre for a nice night out. It was a nice quaint place to watch the show. Although the seats were uncomfortable for watching, and the space in the lobby and outside on the sidewalk was crowded during intermission, it was a nice place to be. The staff were nice and the actors were amazing. Overall, not a bad place to be.

They wanted everyone to wait in the lobby before the show. It's a very small lobby. There were many people. Maybe they sold more candy and wine (yes, alcohol!) but geez, it was just a movie after all. The theatre is an old movie theatre that was converted for live performances and it's a shame that the old fixtures were gone (they weren't in great shape as I recall anyway). All black walls, etc. Sound was okay and my butt didn't ache after over 2 hours of sitting.

Fantastic theatre with a great show selection every season. I also love that their show season is in the summer when other theatre companies traditionally don't run. The space is a little sparse, but the quality of shows makes that negligible. Bring a sweater, as it can get chilly inside when the weather is cooler.

Regis Denefle

Too hot in the summer.

Great little theater

Great shows, snacks and drinks! The theatre itself is a very welcoming environment: well-lit, old-fashioned and comfortable seating, and pleasant decor. A bit on the pricey side, but a guaranteed fun night.

Blue Bridge always puts on top notch shows. You can have a wonderful night out with a meal at one of the good restaurants in Quadra village, a great show and go around the corner for a nightcap.

A very interesting location to experience live performances. The fact that it's an old movie theater adds to the special ambiance. It's not a very large venue (not tiny either) so you do feel closer to the action on stage. The only reason this didn't get more stars is that after viewing some shows I found that it can be difficult to hear the actors if you are not sitting in the center section.

Mishi P (Kongouseki Cosplay)

Great little theater, and the actors working there are super talented! The washrooms are not accessible for people with mobility problems though. I think once the concession area is upgraded, a fundraiser to renovate the washrooms is going to be necessary.

Great local community theatre but prices can be high. They seriously need to reconsider the prices and volumes at concession - wine is a children's cup for $5.50 and as such they seriously lose out compared to the Vic theatre competition.

Francyne Morrison

The Blue Bridge theatre is an experience to remember! The Roxy is part of Victoria's history and the Blue Bridge Repertory Theatre respects this while producing theatre. The members of the community love this small rustic theatre and are often found helping out by volunteering for shows. The shows are put on by local artists who you see returning to the Blue Bridge stage time and time again.

Get thee to the Roxy before July 14th!!! A friend and I attended the performance last evening and were delighted by it. I'd never been to the Roxy before, and while my seat sloped at an 'interesting' angle, the sight-lines were wonderful. The acting is superb, though I have to admit that the polish, timing, and professionalism of Gwynyth Walsh's performance was really stellar. I don't imagine Jonathan Mason will be around for long: he has that wonderful combination of classically handsome looks, a rich, warm voice and superb comic timing that will make him a favourite wherever he takes his talents. Laura-Jane Tressider ran the gamut of emotions very effectively and persuasively. Neil Simon's writing has withstood the test of time beautifully: the audience was laughing out loud constantly, which I'm sure makes things much easier and more rewarding for the company. I'll be subscribing to the Blue Bridge from now on, based on the strength of this performance. Consider dinner at the 5th Street Bar and Grill before hand---the food was excellent! You'll also have a good choice of parking venues on a week night.

Great talented show

Excellent presentation of Billy Bishop Goes to War.

Clearly the company cares little for gender or racial equality with the decision to cancel a recent screening which was pricing fairly (justice pricing) based on solid and fully cited research into gender and racial power dynamics of modern society. Will definitely not be supporting this bigoted company nor their venue in future. When an arts company is suppressing social justice efforts or progressive ideas that they don't understand, it's a sad sign of their lack of commitment to allowing the exploration of ideas unfamiliar to them; which is the epitome of the creation of art.

In addition to superb presentations, I enjoy a fresh and lively atmosphere from the young talented actors that always are given an opportunity to begin their careers in theatre right here at the Roxy!

I used to come here all the time until I was told that the admission fee increased for me because I was, as the arrogant employee stated, a "straight white male". I won't be attending such places that exercise such blatant racism ever again!

Have seen a few shows here and have been pleasantly surprised with the ongoing upgrades to the theatre and facilities. I don't go to enough plays to purchase a membership but if you like the theatre I recommend looking into their offerings as they have many innovative and engaging programs on offer. Fringe festival is always great too.
