A crying shame that a few years ago we had 3 movie theaters in town,and the 2 that are gone were better than the Rialto,mostly due to the seats,if you're unfortunate and wind up seeing a movie over 2 hours long your back and neck will be f**ked for days. Also apparently all the concession snacks are made by royalty and rolled in saffron,which must be the case for the exorbitant prices they charge. I'd rate this torture chamber 0 stars but I can't.

They are improving slowly. They are still retrofitting the seats, however the seats are still pretty uncomfortable unless you get the new recliners. Prices for food is still the industry standard of being around 5 dollars for a large drink and 6 dollars for a large popcorn. Recommend hitting up the dollarstore in the mall next to the theater before you go to the theater. Staff is friendly and the cleanliness is moderate.

New seats new experience, power reclining is better than upright back pain.... Buy the ten pass for around $80 or go on Tuesday for $6. Not the biggest theater for screen size but this is Comox Valley not Vancouver so unless you go on cheap night it won't likely be full unless a new movie is released then expect to wait or reserve online first or forget about it.

I could deal with the crazy high prices if only the seats didn't cripple you and there were a few less spots on the screen. Rolling yourself down a hill will make you less nauseous than the 3D here. Only saving grace is they don't care if you get wasted and bring all your own food.

UPDATED: So with the revamp of the theater we decided to give it another go as we had all but forgotten the hot mess that Landmark called the Rialto theater in Courtenay. New seating is fantastic and the quality of the sound is much better then before. Concession is still in dire need of updating but hopefully that will be the next improvement the company decides to tackle there. Overall I take the theater up from 1 star (wish it could have voted it a half star back then) to a soft 3 star.

One has to give credit where due. I gave a review long ago about this theatre that was “less than flattering” thus I feel it only fair that I review again given the money they have finally decided to put into renovations. The new chairs are AWESOME The sound system also seems improved as too does the screen in theatre 1. I will be going back to the movies again after seeing Bohemian rhapsody this past weekend. I bought a ten movie pass for the cost of eight movies which in itself was a great deal. However, the deal gets better in that the pass also entitles one to 10% at the concession. The ability to reserve one’s seat and prepay using the Atom app is a great idea. So why only 4 out of 5 stars? Because the renovations are not yet complete thus don’t want to be too generous yet

Honestly the theater is really good considering the bad chairs. The costumer service and the staff are amazing. The popcorn and connsession are the bread and butter for movie theatres, so dont complain. your getting pretty good popcorn and conssession snacks.

Super disorganize and it seems like they have just given up. The seats are so bad and they haven't fixed any of the broken ones. There's been a huge black spot on the screen in theatre one for years. They don't have a dedicated line for tickets so you can wait in the concession line up to 10-30min just to get a ticket.

I go almost every week and have never had a bad experience. Staff are friendly and courteous. I don't find the seating as uncomfortable as people say, although it would be great to have reclining seats. It's our local movie theatre and I'm glad to have it as an option for entertainment.

Two times in a row I've gone to see a movie and been disappointed by technical issues. The sound was terrible for Star Wars and today at Batman Vs. Superman, the 3D didn't work so I had to walk out. The staff seemed unable to handle such an event: they didn't offer refunds, only free passes. Of course all the people who bought concession didn't get a refund on that either. They need someone in charge who actually knows how to run a business.

The last 2 movies I saw on opening night had the experience negatively impacted by the projector equipment at this theatre. Deadpool had 2 minutes of video blacked out when the projector failed and last night I saw Super v Batman and for the first 30 minutes the 3D didn't work making the film blurry and unwatchable. Do NOT trust this theatre's aging equipment with your night out. Go to campbell river or nanaimo.

Great job on the renovations! A complete 180! The seats are plush, reclining, and oh so very clean. The floors are spotless and the screens are reasonably big. The atmosphere has definitely improved for the better. The whole place exudes a new car smell which I don't mind one bit.

Great theater but if you go to the late show get all your snacks and drinks before the movie. I went with my family yesterday night and about a half hour into the movie I went out and they had closed everything down. So finished the movie thirsty and hungry.

I've had nothing but good experiences at this theatre. I've found the seats comfortable, the theatre clean, and the staff friendly. I also brought my children here to see THE BEST KID'S MOVIE OF THE LAST MANY YEARS ("Inside Out"), and was happy when the theatre played it again, months later, due to popular demand and critical success. (We went and saw it again, it was that good of a flick.) The theatre is also conveniently located within walking distance to a family restaurant, a sushi restaurant, and a Boston Pizza, so a night of "dinner and a movie" is made simple and easy.

This is the only movie theatre in town, so unless you are willing to travel to Naniamo this is what you have. That being said. The regualar movie quality is good. The 3D movies are as well but the experience is ruined by the seating layout. Most new theatres have highback seating and adequate height spacing to ensure good views. Rialto does not. The seats here are also outdated and need of serious repair. The size and number of screens is more than sufficient for the size of this town. If they did some serious renovations and updated their seating they would easily get more traffic probably even from Campbell River.

I remember when they first built this, I was so excited to have a modern theater in the city, here we are more than a decade later and it is falling apart. I have actually driven to Nanaimo to see a movie several times to avoid this place. There is no funding going into this theater, and because they have no competition they won't bother, avoid when possible.

The movies are fine, the staff are generally good but the physical theatre is far overdue for an upgrade. The seats are absolutely terrible, the screens are ancient and dirty, the bathrooms dirty and inefficient.... the owner(s) whoever they are have a monopoly and they know it and take advantage of us lowly peons. Won't change unless there is a boycott or another theatre comes to the valley.

An incredible upgrade from what this theater used to be (from a long time Comox Valley resident). Seats are the best on the island now, sound upgrade was certainly noticeable too. Staffing issues still seem to be apparent though. Busy days with large lines cause me and my girlfriend to miss beginnings of some movies because only 1 or 2 tills of the 4-5 are open. Also they would totally make bank if they added a hot-dog machine and froYo yogurt, then they could hire more staff!

EDIT: My previous review complained of the terrible seats but they have since (finally) replaced them with large reclining seats that are fantastic. They have also switched to reserved seating, and you can order everything ahead of time (You should) through the Atom App, including your food. This has brought the review from a 1 star to a 4 star, the only thing they need to improve to bring it to 5 would be some better sound isolation between theater rooms; as you can sometimes hear explosions or music from the show next door if your movie is at a quiet spot. Overall, very good change and I'm glad to see it happen, I will be going to this theater a lot more often now!

VERY DISAPPOINTED after moving here to find out this is the only place in town to see a movie. One of the screens has patches (duct tape?) on it because we were told it was damaged when it was installed! Very distracting, why wasn't it replaced?? The snacks are not the most expensive I've seen but the popcorn is horrible! Stale and gross! The worst part as mentioned by so many is the seats, they are the worst ever! the cushions are terrible and the bottoms are at the wrong angle which means there is no way to get comfortable period! Why would somebody pay to be in so much PAIN for 2 hours that they can't even enjoy the movie. Drive to Nanaimo and go to the Galaxy Cinema and you will see what a theatre is supposed to be. Really used to like going to the movies but those seats are pathetic and insulting when you consider they charge as much as a good theatre. Maybe if patrons expressed their displeasure to the management in person they would get the idea. FIX THE DAMN SEATS!! If there was an option for 0 stars I would have chosen that....

Great renovations and some new staff members have done wonders for the theater! Love the seats and the ability to lift the arm rest to bring little kids in close for cuddle with your partner! The renovations that have been done to make this place better are amazing. Fully reclining leather chairs where the middle armrest ever second chair can fold up, making couples movies even better ;). They have upped their snacks game as well, no longer does it suck like it used to. Popcorn is fresh, crispy, and has a satisfying amount of butter, and candy selections have been updated to reflect the 21st century. I wish that this theater was like this when I lived in the valley, they would've seen alot more of me.

This theatre is terrible. While the staff are commendable and work hard, the management/ownership needs a wake up call. Back destroying seats? Check. Awful concession prices? Check. Medieval payment methods? Check. But perhaps most aggravating of all is the lack of quality films that come to this cultural backwater of a "theatre". Children's films, bloated blockbusters and re-treads. If you want to see films that are well made and thought provoking, leave town. I would say go to the "other" theatre, but of course this dump has a monopoly on film in the valley.

My wife and I just saw Aquaman in the renovated Landmark Cinema in Courtenay. Great movie and the theatre is amazing. The chairs are leather, power reclining with lots of room. Seating capacity is probably about 50% of what it used to be which means there's lots of space for comfort and a great movie-going experience. The photo is not of the Courtenay movie theatre, yet very similar. Well done, Landmark. You will bring people back to the movies!

The owners of this facility have not replaced any seating since the place opened in the mid 1990's. Whereas, theatres in Nanaimo and Victoria are continually updating to keep the customers coming in the live away owners of this theatre don't care. Many people will drive south to see a block buster movie on a big screen. For everything else why would you attend this theatre when its cheaper to get Netflix.

The theatre is run down, outdated and dirty. The service is not good. They rarely have someone taking ur ticket anymore, I really could have just walked in and into a theatre without anyone noticing on many occasions cause the only staff r over behind the counter. And they have stopped posting what movies r showing on their billboard! There is only a notice to check online to see what's playing, laziness! I don't know who is managing this place, but they obviously don't care what happens.

Staff are great with the very odd time having the some of staff more interested in talking to their friends in the line then doing their job. Prices are reasonable in the grand scheme of life. As for the physical condition of the place I can not believe how management can allow it get to such a state. Twice over the years I have had the seat break as I sat down and I am less than 180 pounds. When I say break I mean it hitting the ground. I know nothing of the running of a movie theater but if I ever strike it rich in the Lotto I would build a movie theater as my lack of knowledge in this industry would not hamper me in doing a better job maintaining one.

Staff works really hard to get everyone their concessions as fast as possible. Since the seats were updated my love of the movie theater has increased 10 fold. The addition of the Atom app as well to skip the line and reserve online is great! I also noticed expanded showtimes with morning matinees now which I thoroughly enjoy!

It's been three times that they've had to refund us because the movie either DIDN'T WORK AT ALL or turned off 3+ times in the middle of the film. The seats are practically on the ground and horribly uncomfortable. It feels like the owners don't care about the customers comfort whatsoever and leave a bunch of kids to let people down every second day. Sad they couldn't give us money back for the waste of popcorn. The only saving grace is the young workers who are at least compassionate and quick to refund, but I'm finished with going here. Courtenay needs a Cineplex asap. Coming from Montreal and recently Victoria, this is a sad excuse and barely functioning.

Gorgeous theater that is definitely designed for the optimal customer experience. The seats recline and there are foot rests. The cup holders are chilled to keep your drinks from getting warm during long movies. The arm rests also lift so you can cuddle during the movie. Perfect viewing experience

I grew up in Powell River and that theatre is really old. It kinda resembles to this one. The seats are fine, you're not paying to go to a fancy diner. If your butt hurts, deal with it. You're seeing a movie that just came out. At least there's many screens that are playing, in PR we only had one. Stop complaining this is nothing. The snacks are always going to be pricey, it's a theatre what do you expect. Yes the floor may be bad, but I'm sure they'll get on it, it's a busy place. You aren't there to look at the floor. Of course I'm going to give this a 5 star because it deserves it. I'll always come here if I have time.

It's the only cinema in the area, so it works for me. Seats are getting a bit old and not the most comfortable, and they don't have the steep-pitched "stadium seating" so you can have someone's head in front of you, but the screens and the sound are still good. The 3D projection system works well, so it's worth going to 3D movies there.

Edit for renovations November 21, 2018: the seats are now good quality recliners ave very comfortable. Very good improvement. However, the bathrooms are still filthy. Mould all around the taps, toilets are still old and janky. Soap dispensers didn't work well. Hopefully the bathrooms are next to be fixed up. First review July 2018: The only problem I had was the state the cinema was in. It was filthy and dilapidated. The few staff I saw were incredibly polite and there was no issues with the screening, but the theatre is horribly unkempt and outdated. There were rips in the carpet, seats, benches.... stains everywhere, mould in the bathrooms, old popcorn and food everywhere ground into the floors. The owners of this theatre obviously do not care about the place at all. I love going to the Nanaimo, BC location. The one in Courtenay is, simply, a dump. I will drive elsewhere from now on.

Concession getting a Reno in the new year but my pet peeve now is the lineups. We can purchase tickets online, reserve seating. Yet when coming to the theatre for just concession we’re dumped in the same line as everyone else buying tickets and getting concession. Need a separate concession only line for people that already have tickets.. I wasted 20 min for something that should have taken 5 min. I’m talking the Costco movie deal coupons as the atom app doesn’t except them..(already complained to atom) Listen to your customers because it’s stupid one line for everyone. This movie theatre has been upgraded recently with nice reclining seats. Our family loved it and my son fell asleep on the chair during end credits. Pre-book your seat location online early to make sure you get the seat you want! Even the front row was fun with the reclining seat. Back row has enough space to walk in front without disturbing anyone at all, and there is much more space between all aisles than there used to be with the old seating.

What most people fail to realize here on the ratings/reviews... is concessions everywhere is expensive! The cinema in Campbell River has same pricing. The Rialto is a Landmark Cinema which are all over Canada. It is NOT a locally owned business. Several of the employees are younger, possibly working their first ever jobs. What seems to be lacking here is better managers and supervisors. Yes, alot of things have seen better days there, but I have also observed careless movie- goers that can't seem to be able to clean up after themselves or their young children. Try cleaning soaked in butter in seats and carpeting that has been ground in all day from all these "responsible" movie patrons day after day, year after year. Finally, Some of the employees are excellent!

Since the new seats. Extremely comfortable, let's just say have tons of energy becuase if it's a boring movie or not the genre you enjoy, you can fall asleep very easily. The vantage point from any seat is amazing becuase of the elevation and perspective you have even in full reclining mode. A huge improvement in the last 10 years +. The Rialto I believe has regained some former glory, and the decorum and new color scheme is big improvement as well.

Comfortable, older theatre, somewhat dated, but clean, nicely kept. Like most of today's establishments, it is a multi mini theatre complex. Unfortunately I didn't visit the concession stand or the bathrooms. So I cannot tell you if the selection of treats is good or if the bathrooms are clean. What I can tell you is that the price of admission seemed reasonable & everyone else around us had cardboard trays stacked with buttered popcorn buckets, pop & assorted goodies. I had given a bad review of the Rialto 2 years or so ago. They have remodeled with recliner seats. Very excellent! All seating is by reservation and the front box office still closed. One has to queue up inside at the concession. Still no currently playing shows listed on the marquee outside. A better experience but they've still fallen short of what is possible.

The only Theatre in The Comox Valley.... and finally has the comfy recliner seats. I would have given it a 4 or 5 if the seating was organized in single and not in the double style and the screens were a bit bigger. The seats are cushy but not as wide as some of the other recliner theatres I have been to. Other than sharing an armrest and being hugged a little by the seat, not a bad place to catch a flick.

Worst theatre ever! Needs an upgrade badly!

Old theatre, all the staff appear to be about 16-18 yrs old and seem to have no customer service skills sadly. It never appears that there is any adult supervision/ management around on Tuesday or Friday nights when you would expect it to be busy. Also, when it's busy and they are understaffed, they have all their staff working at popcorn counter and everyone has to wait in line even if they are not buying snacks, normally this would be okay, but because the staff are inexperienced and slow, you have to wait in line sometimes for 45 minutes! And then you're late for your movie... a good resolution to management, open up a till just for ticket sales so people can watch what they're paying for.

Finally. Really an experience to go here now. I'd sworn off this theatre, but now it's heaven with electric reclining seat, larger screen, epic sound. Makes seeing a movie an experience, go check it out!

Always a good experience. Friendly helpful staff. I like old theatres and search them out when traveling. This is not an old theatre, but still one if my favourites. I get too involved in the movie to be concerned about too many details of the theatre. Any theatre that will take the time to make salt free popcorn ranks high on my list.

I just booked a private movie screening for my son's 6th birthday and it was perfect. We ordered our snacks ahead of time so they were all ready to go. The staff were waiting for us right on time, and they were very friendly and accommodating. One of the kids didn't like the candy offered on the order form so the staff member offered her some other choice's. She could have easily said tough and I'm sure that's their protocol to only offer what's on the form, but she made this kid really happy to get a candy they did like ???? The theatre was clean and sanitized. Also, Ashdenne, whom I booked the event through had great communication throughout the process. Overall a great experience. We're already planning the next one. Thank you

Went to movie last night, no one at the door to buy tickets from nor anyone checking tickets(security?) after purchasing them in the very long food line up. After my purchase the cashier asked for 29.51 and gave her$40.00 which seems way too much and got 10.50 change. After checking the receipt when sitting down which only read 20.52 I went back and was given 9.00.00 back. When I got home I looked at the receipt again and the "Total due" should have been 29.51 according to items shown and yet it shows 20.52,computer glitch? Tried calling to clarify but their phone system seems to have a computer glitch too and no response to prompts given. This business seems off the rails from my perspective. Lets hope they read this and fix something Tim

The place is disgusting so run down and dirty. Bathroom has broken stalls and dirty floors. Chairs a super uncomfortable. The only reason they get away with it is because they are the only theatre in town

Seats are very uncomfortable and so greasy it's easy to slide off them. Staff is slow and not very trained. If a Cineplex opened in this town this theatre would quickly go out of business. It is very worth the drive down to Nanaimo for the Cineplex there

Matinees are same price as regular admission????? Seriously! Gross lobby, unclean and poorly lit. Expensive treats and snacks. Seat are made by torture inc. floor is mainly sugar. To cold during the spring, autumn and winter.

Absolutely filthy. Lobby, bathroom- all of it. They should not be serving any kind of food in such an environment. The screen also had significant ghost image issues in the bottom left. We've gone here because it's the only place in town to go, but it's getting too disgusting to tolerate, ESPECIALLY for the price you pay.

Had a pretty good time. Popcorn was all popped, no kernels at all, unlike at home. Seats were no different than other theaters of this type and had decent leg room.

The new seats are amazing. They have an app that you can pay for everything with too. We walked in to the special window, grabbed our stuff that was already prepared, and took out reserved seats. It was a very pleasant experience and I'm happy to say I finally enjoy going to my local theatre.

Old theater that has been recently updated and deserves at least 4 stars. Nice leather recliners. The concessions and washrooms are still very worn out and need updating! Also, they seemed understaffed and the lack of a working ticket booth or dedicated ticket line separate from concessions made the line long and the lounge overcrowded. Hopefully Landmark joins the 21st century and at least installs automated/electronic ticket machines like Cineplex.

I have not been to this theatre in a long time, my wife and I were excited to get out for a date as we received an E-gift card for Christmas, she really wanted to see the new Star Wars movie... We arrive early because I figured there might be some effort involved with the electronic gift card we had, the ticket booth is no longer used so we had to go inside to the concession stand and what do you know there is a problem with using it, the young lady had no idea so she had to get help from another person which who is also doing tickets and concession as well, this whole ordeal takes about 15min. The line ups are now huge, did I mentioned how gross and dirty the floor of the lobby was? What a dump, straws, napkins, popcorn, spilled pop (if I could of found a push broom I would of givin it a sweep myself) Ok so we get into our seats which are so uncomfortable after 30min my ass was falling asleep, I tried repositions 100's of times though out the whole movie with no luck I never really got to enjoy the movie. I can now see why I have not been to this theatre in a long time. I will not be back again. What a expensive and bad experience

Okay so they upped their game. Great seats! Staff knew what they were doing and the popcorn and pop not so bad... Still love the cotton candy but the price at concession stand was a bit high... Otherwise a 5 star would be happening

After watching my movie (in the uncomfortable, mostly broken seat), I realised that I had not received my change from the purchase of my ticket. I asked a staff member to speak with their manager on duty. The manager refused to come out and discuss the missing money with me and i was told that they were "to busy doing their work to come out". Score another point in the box for the crappy customer service at that theater.

Great that they renovated and put in modern reclining seats! It's a much better movie watching experience now. They even left enough room so you can fully recline and people can still walk by to get to their seats.

So happy with all the renos! great job guys! love that it still has an Art Deco charm...and for the people complaining that the arm rests are squishing them and they find the seats too tight , some of the arm rests lift up and turn into a love seats...so easy fix :)

They did get that facelift and the staff seems much happier now as well. Love the recliner chairs and reserved seating! Honestly the theatre needs a face lift and the staff could, at least, act happy... It's obvious that they're the only game in town. It's too bad that they're losing money from folks driving to Campbell River or Nanaimo just to watch a movie..

Decent. The movie and sound display are fine. Popcorn is good, food is overpriced but all movie theatres are. One thing that’s bad is that you can only get refills for large pops, not medium. Bathrooms aren’t horrible, but ain’t great.

I am so happy that this theatre is renovated, clean, and very comfortable, with the cushy loungers to occupy. I love going to matinees is the summer, and wish that they would continue day showings, throughout the year.

Updating my review after the renovation. Clean (the bathrooms could still use an update) and the new seats are comfortable finally. The staff's always been helpful and quick. I go to a movie every few months now.

How does this manage a 3 star review? Worse theatre I've ever been in, across 3 provinces and over 20+ years. I guess that's the advantage to having a monopoly, as bad as you are, where else will they go?

This theater needs a makeover. The seats are horrible. You leave with neck and back pains because of the odd angles you have to shift just to view the show in a semi-comfortable position. They only have 4 showings at a time which doesn't allow for any movies to be aired for very long before they stop showing it and move to the next one. Yet, oddly enough, sometimes movies that don't appeal to a mass audience get plenty of air time and others that do get a week and a half. Also, the line to purchase tickets is outside, so when it's thundering down rain you have to be out in the cold. This contributes to their ill set up theater. Plus, no IMAX and their 3D is mediocre.

LOVE the new seats! so comfortable and it's nice to be able to put the arm rest up and cuddle up together. Now all we need is more tills :) Excellent job to the new owner and so nice to not have to travel to Cambell River anymore!! I had purchased the kids passes from Coscto for my daughter's Birthday party and one child had to cancel and the Manager refunded me for another time. Excellent service :)
