REVIEWS OF Rio Theatre IN Burnaby

Ryan “Butch” S

I LOVE THE RIO. It makes life better. They host a steady stream of the best movies you might have missed, great oldies, cult classics, international animation, foreign gems and indie gold. They also have lots of super fun quirky live theatre and comedy productions. Don’t forget the booze and reeeeal butter on the popcorn. Eee!

Kristen W.

Went there for a comedy show and we had a great time! Staff were nice, beers were cold, popcorn was buttery, seats were oddly kind of damp (at least we know they get cleaned once in a while) and entertainment was fun!

chris keller

A true Vancouver institution. not just movies... comedy, live music, special events... I personally recommend the Gentlemen Hecklers monthly show. An amazing spot all around. get yourself a cheap and delicious slushy margarita, a grilled cheese, and be thoroughly entertained for a few hrs. If it's good enough for Ryan Reynolds it's good enough for you right?

Alcohol and a movie? Ok not sure the sense in that, maybe for a scene or two... First off I love what they`re doing, where else can you see great flicks from your childhood on the big-screen, but my problem is all the drunk fans who have also seen those flicks who feel it`s appropriate to talk loudly and openly throughout the whole movie. Yes it`s the only place you can watch: 2001, Halloween, Holy Mountain, Big Lebowksi etc.. Just be prepared to have expert fans drunkenly rant loudly about their knowledge, or just the drunk/stoned ones with awkward inappropriately placed laughter throughout.

Help save the Rio. We couldn't resist the buttered popcorn smell the moment we purchased our ticket, come inside and see what other treats await you. Enjoy your movie. ????

Justin Turner

I saved the Rio. Check the website. Constantly rotating wide variety of movies, documentaries, live shows, special guests. Sells out fast on alot of stuff. Make sure to book tickets online. Has two bars. Fair prices at the bar. They make em strong and good. Great times. Been here many many times.

Kodiak Woods

Great atmosphere, affordable food and fun shows

M T

Local Legendary Hotspot :) The Rio is a slice of the past in Vancouver, I love the features of the place and the atmosphere. They show a great range of movies from classics to new releases. The popcorn is yummie, oh and you can also purchase alcohol there. Maybe bring a jacket though, as sometimes it gets lil' chilly inside.

Mathieu Pudleiner

Been here many times for concerts and movies, always a great time. One of the most comfortable spots to watch cult classics and anything in-between.

John No

Great shows here. Not seen a movie but the other things they offer are unique and worth checking out. Here from out of town for two weeks am so glad i found this place. Drink selection is not great but they offer mead with ice or room temp. Dont find that too often. Paul Anthonys talent time was great, as was the squidling brothers circus sideshow. Keep up the great work, keep this old theater going.

Natasha Cadieux

The most beautiful staff in town. Comfy seats, cheap drinks, gorgeous films

John Selberis

Always good to see Kevin Smith here!

MS

I love it here. It's beautiful and they have such a dynamic assortment of things to watch! They show oldies, they have live burlesque shows, they show live improv comedy (my favourite is the once a month Improv Against Humanity show), as well as newer films are shown as well. You can even order alcohol with your popcorn! I think I love it most because it's a historical building, which is always nice.

Greg Hernandez

Simply a great throwback to moviegoing from yesteryear. Licensed with an excellent drink menu. Line up of former box office hits is a blast. Just saw Jaws on the big screen for the first time. LOVED IT!!!

Bryn Hughes

Always amazing. Every event I come to here is a unique piece of Vancouver. The staff are always working towards giving us all the best experience possible and the venue is divine. No matter what you like, there's a night here for it.

Noel Johnson

Great selection of new and classic film. And you can have a beer while watching a movie!

Meredith

The best little theatre for cult movie experiences, live performances, and even community events - it's the best little movie theatre to grace British Columbia

Avada M. Douglas

Always a joy. So many great movies and documentaries both new and old. Tasty popcorn. Yummy margaritas.

Mark Giesbrecht

Went to see a film for the first time in over a year. The seating was limited and spread out. It was very calm inside. The usher made me relax with his calm manner in explaining the protocols. I forgot just how loud cinemas are. I quite enjoyed myself and will return soon.

Cody Bisson

Amazing cultural spot to check out a wide assortment of movies. This is one of the few venues in the city that hosts a wide variety of events spanning from burlesque shows, comedy, improv, talent shows and classic movie events. They were also the first movie theater in the province to serve alcohol, which they still do at a reasonable price.

Tom Joslin

Isle of dogs was great movie, a deal on Groupon made it even better! Popcorn is huge and tastes great. Thanks

Kizzy Bottino

I like what they do for community. I don't like the staff. They are very rude. But they have the best popcorn I've ever had

Rachel Howard

Great shows and great staff. Love the popcorn and flavors too!

Jason York (Jork21)

Saw Dan Savage's HUMP! There's a movie screen and an elevated stage for performances. A truly memorable experience.

Chelsey N

What can I say? The Rio is an East Van landmark and one of my favorite places to see a show, live or otherwise. From viewings of cult classics (Labyrinth, Rocky Horror), to burlesque, and more, there's always something fun happening here. And with boozy drinks, popcorn, and candy, the Rio has you covered for snacks. There isn't another place in Vancouver like it and I hope to spend many more fun-filled evenings at the Rio.

James Stewart

An awesome movie theater. They have a liquor license and show both older and new movies. What's not to love?

NC DeeBee

the movie selection, the friendly staff, the closeness to transit, and you support local, what is not to love, also there are fundraising events for various organizations here, also they have burlesque too

B Mitchell

Great theater, decent food stand, good prices, really cool atmosphere. Will be back again soon.

H.G. Bells

What's not to love about the Rio? I love going to Geek enders shows there. Oh East Van, <3

Ophelia Li

Partner mistakenly bought tickets for the wrong night online. They let us in hassle-free. It's one of the reasons why we keep coming back! Can't wait until we work daytime so we can enjoy the late night weekday features again.

Siobhan Sagessa

Great range of films, new and old, as well as great local events. One of the last remaining theatres to host Rocky Horror Picture Show screenings as well!

emily tong

i saw The Room here and what a fantastic moviegoing experience! lovelovelove the vibe plus the margaritas are legit ✌

Ivaylo Krumov

Great renovation. Movies, food, relaxation... All you need to have fun

Habu Ya

Nice and easily accessible as its only half a block from the Broadway Skytrain station. Free car parking on broadway, only 1 hour directly in front of the theatre and 2 hours further away. Their popcorn was popped with olive oil and no butter, awesome for my daughter who'se allergic to dairy. There's a second floor for viewing as well. They serve alcohol with a small bar area. Lots of burlesque shows here as evident by the posters of up coming shows.

Raw Lamb

Great place to see a cult favorite with a bunch of geeks & savages! The Room is unforgettable, & full-house screenings are fantastic!

Ron Hatch

They play some great movies here and have an old-time theatre type of feel. Beer and wine is on sale as well as coffee and food beyond the standard popcorn and candy. Great spot to catch documentaries, classics, foreign films and cult classics.

L G.

Love the movies, and the staff is always so nice. Place is very clean, they take the distancing and covid precautions very seriously.

Chowder Head

Best theatre in Vancouver, hands down. Yes you can watch a movie and drink a beer. Also hosts many of the best live shows in town like The Gentleman Hecklers and Improv Against Humanity. Staff treat you with class and I suspect the place is run by an awesome babe who has this city's back.

John Duggan

Hadn't been here in years (think almost 2 decades), Jay and Silent Bob Reboot Roadshow was coming here, so I had to get Tix. I don't often commute to Vancouver, but very glad I did. seating was good, screen and projectors were good. sound quality was great, and the stage was perfect for Kevin Smith to do what he does best. The staff of the theatre seemed to know what they were doing, cant fault them if Kev kept talking after they were supposed to wrap.

Chris Bromige

Funky theatre with a good community vibe. Decently priced beer. A bit grimy but that helps the funky feel.

Sarah Bean Sherman

Love going to the Rio! They show movies that the chain theaters don't show and do fun things like a sing a long for Sound of music or playing the lord of the rings trilogy- all 3 extended versions!!????❤❤

Kristi Fuoco

I love the Rio! One of the few independent, local cinemas left and a true East Van gem. I've seen so many great film festivals here as well as variety shows, burlesque, comedy and lots more. Love the warm and welcoming East Van vibe.

Robert Sutherland

Great single screen theatre showing limited run movies, cult classics, and is also a live music venue

Henry Yu

Wow, brings back a lot of fond memories! Remembered in the 90's, this theatre shows Chinese (Hong Kong) movies. I can remember watching movies there every weekend with my mom.

Mike Burnside

It's a fantastic place that shows some really fantastic and niche films which you may not ever be able to see in a theatre again. Sure the staff sometimes smartasses you and the old guy in charge acts like he's some kind of self-important feudal lord running his own fiefdom. But it all just adds to the atmosphere in the end :p . Plus, the beer's reasonably priced.

Andrew Del Monte

I was at Rio to see a movie with my girlfriend. Before the movie started my girlfriend accidentally hit her head in the theatre washroom and we decided to leave the theatre to go to the hospital. I quickly explained the situation to the box office attendant and asked for a refund. He showed zero sympathy for our predicament and my girlfriend's condition and went about trying to help me in the slowest and most indifferent way possible. When he finally told me that I couldn't get a refund but only a free pass to another movie, I asked to speak to the manager. As he was getting the manager - again, very slowly and showing no acknowledgement of my girlfriend's state - I changed my mind because I was in a hurry and asked for the free passes. He handed them to me and - again, because I was in a hurry to get to the hospital - I quickly grabbed them out of his hands, and as I was walking away he shouted at me over the box office PA system, publicly mocking me for hurrying the way I was. This was extremely infuriating because he showed no sympathy for my girlfriend's state at any point and then embarrassed us as I was walking away in a hurry. I was disgusted by the indifference and lack of empathy with which my girlfriend and I were treated in an anxious, stressful moment.

Kari Ann Stickle

SAVE THE RIO I was in town visiting my brother with our cousin and we didn't know what to do that evening. We saw the signs outside the Rio and we knew we had to go. We ended up happening to be there for Not The Bees. Hilarious. I was in actual tears with laughter. I told my brother he had to promise me he would attend an event a month for me, on behalf of me.

Jamaal Parker

Great place to see live shows and theirs always a lot of variety. They support the arts and have Burlesque, Circus, Theatre, Comedy and so much more. Also they show lots of fun throwback movies and cult classics... I do miss the strawberry margarita ???? but still 5/5 in my books. Photo of: Vixen Von Flex live at the Rio.

Jessica Cochran

Local theatre off the Drive that features so many great films! They run season flicks, film fest movies, and documentaries plus live shows. Rio also serves alcohol (wine, beer, and specials), grilled cheese sandwiches, and your usual movie fare of candy and popcorn.

Ace

This theatre rocks, they play so many great movies. Too much Rocky Horror Picture Show though, lol. Best theatre in the lower mainland!

Valerie LeComte

I had a great time at the movies.

Andrew Be Still Well

Excellent service, you can drink, and the arms on the seats can be put up, which is nice if you're on a date.

Jeffrey Murphy

Excellent place to catch a movie. Seats were comfortable, picture perfect, and sound was good and clear.

Joe Fulgham

Great shows (Critical Hit Show, Improv Against Humanity, many more) at good prices. Friendly staff, right by Commercial Broadway Skytrain, and licensed if that's your thing.

Paisley D

This place is a gem ! They show amazing movies and host amazing events that are very reasonably priced. They serve beer and other alcoholic drinks, not at ludicrous prices either. They also have good coffee, and awesome grilled cheese! And popcorn of course

Kale Stedman

Monday nights are half-price movies -- $6! and be sure to get the beer combo, which is like $8 for a beer, candy, and popcorn. Cheaper than the cost of a ticket at one of the fancy theatres. Friday night late-night movies are the best, though, always a cult classic or favourite that everybody loves, and there's always a little costume contest or trivia or random burlesque show or something to go along with it. Very cool, very fun, my default choice for a cheap, fun evening out.

I M

Great community space showing a great variety of quality foreign, vintage and local films. Plus, they serve beer!

Ted Haley

Cards against humanity improv was more of a cry for help than a comedy show. I like the venue, but that was a pretty terrible show.

Kevin

A little dirty. A little gritty. A lot of character. The Rio is one of the few places in Vancouver that still hosts large community events with an underground, do it yourself vibe. Whether it's a raucous Game of Thrones burlesque show, hosting Vancouver International Film Festival movies, live Dungeons & Dragons show, or niche screenings like Clockwork Orange, Turbo Kid, or The Room, The Rio continues to be a place I visit and revisit to bask in the charming grit of the theatre. If you expect something more from a place that offers (excellent) grilled cheese sandwiches and Margarita slushies, than your tastes may be too bourgeois and lacking the essential bohemian for this establishment.

Sunny Yerra

Bring back the feeling of old school theatres and watch a screening of your favorite movies here!

Nic Tagg

The Rio holds some of the best evebts and indie films in Vancouver. A must visit staple. Check out the monthky improvised DND Live 'Critical Hit Show'!

Kapitol Oner

Cool place! Went to watch a documentary and had a great time. Really felt like stepping back in time to childhood when you step through the front doors. Stocked concession stand and big comfortable seats await inside. Great picture but the audio was quite lacking in bass. Would definitely come back to watch more movies!

-D. gorn

Nice seats, big theatre, balcony, great popcorn, great choice of older movies shown

Susan “Su” Hanson

What can I say? I love this place! Awesome selection of movies, festivals and live performances. Popcorn AND beer!!

Stefano Cataldi

Good movies but expensive drinks. A lot of good comedy shows and other events in a very informal, casual environment

Megha Gupta

I loved the movie 'Jane' and the fact that they serve beer. It's an old theatre hall, expect less and you won't be disappointed.

Darlene Wong

Multi-Functional Neighborhood Theatre. My family and I attended the annual LOTR triple bill marathon. We had purchased the tickets in advance from the box office a week in advance expecting it to be a sell out as it had been in previous years. The staff at the door were well organized to give out hand stamps and wristbands to allow in and out privileges between shows which was excellent. Their concession stand offers the typical popcorn drink & candy combo in addition to hot beverages, alcoholic drinks, grilled cheese sandwiches and rice crispy treats. The seats were very comfortable with plenty of leg room, retractable arm rests for holding beverages or just for snuggling closer with your mate. There were preshow games of Q&A where prizes such as candy and show passes were given to those who were brave enough or knowledgeable enough to match their wits on stage with the MC! The vibe in the theatre was very inclusive as we were all LOTR fans who gathered together for an enjoyable cinema event. A rowdy noisy customer was asked to leave by management when people complained. The staff were efficient with all their services. They offer all other types of cinema shows during the rest of the year including a burlesque show. No one is allowed entry under the age of 19 because of their liquor licence. Excellent alternative theatre for different types of events and cinema showings. They have a website where one can see their calendar of events. This is a destination type theatre that is a change from the cookie cutter shows seen at a Cineplex Odeon.

raspberryplatypus

I love the Rio! Miss it a lot since I haven't been since late 2019 but hoping to go soon! Going to a smaller theatre like the Rio feels like more of an "experience" than going to the cineplex. Great place to watch cult favourites and independent films.

Katka Dojcakova

Great theater, spacious, convenient right by transit or 2hr street parking. Clean washrooms.

felicity crisp

Really good social distancing ! Also just is fun in general to support a local theater ????

Wren Handman

This theatre is pretty dingy, dirty carpets and slightly sketchy bathrooms. But the shows they have are awesome, really great second run things and also there's a stage for live shows. You're allowed drinks in the theatre, and considering it's a concession the drinks are pretty reasonably priced. Staff is always friendly and happy to help out if anything goes amiss.

frumS relliK

I saw a movie there. It was film and it was the brightest, sharpest (in focus) and the most stable (the film did not shake as it moved through the projector) I have ever seen. For a while I thought it was digital. Who ever is in charge of running and maintaining the projector is a master, preforming a true act of love. P.S.: Turn off your phone.

Jodi Jackman

Great!! Comfy seats..lots of room...vegan-butter popcorn, fantastic films, clean theatre...

Tira

Went here for a burlesque show. The audience was a lot younger in general than I expected, they serve alcohol, and the show was fantastic! Super funny, the actors didn't take themselves too seriously while still putting in excellent effort with their part(s). Best part of my week-long road trip around B.C.

David Montgomery

Best theater in town. Great old venue. Licensed. Plays the old campy movies - I just watched Rocky Horror, Young Frankenstein and Predator this past week.

David Heinrich

A great old theatre with a lot of hipster charm. They show old classics and lesser-known gems. They are also licensed.

E Stew

Best popcorn, friendly staff, great selection of movies and they are conscious about being sustainable and not producing waste.

Joseph Conway

This. Is. Art The Rio is not just a place to go watch movies you never thought you'd get to see in theater. It is a place you go to get an experience art that is found in too few places on this planet

Jove Ní Ciardubhain

I love this place! They always show great movies, old and new and it has a fun atmosphere. The snack and drink selection is more interesting than mainstream cinemas.

Krystal Sahabi

Absolutely the best theater in Vancouver. You'll find more than your summer blockbuster here... Expect live performances, special screenings of films with limited theatrical release, as well as the old classics. There is nothing quite like seeing an old horror flick with hundreds of people packed into the Rio. They also serve alcohol, so it's definitely much more fun than your average night at the movies.

Jennefer Boudreau

The seats are super comfy and they serve alcohol here. They play some big motion pictures, and have some local shows and improv!

Sally Poon

I visited the Rio for the Harry Potter burlesque show. It was my first time there and I liked the intimacy of the theatre. It's small and the community around the area is just lovely. Would love to visit to watch a movie some time!

James Lamers

Friendly staff, good concession with selection of alcohol, nice theatre, good lineup of movies and live entertainment.

Urbaniak George

Midnight showing of "Rocky Horror Picture Show". Loved it. Did it 35 years ago. I'll do it next year as well. Sorry no pix this time.

Taylor Fell

Eclectic fixture of Vancouver. They play a wide variety of classic films as well as modern offerings. Live indie theatre pieces are also a treat on offer!

Return To 42nd Street

Was a great theatre in the old world while it lasted, but they have turned blatantly fascist in the new world of 'obey or else'. Sadly, they're not even aware of what they've turned into. The place will last a year... maybe two because of that. Wait for it.

Robert Bailey

This historic theatre is a gem and a must-frequent if you live int he area! Small, intimate yet spacious at the same time - every seat is a good seat and the selection of films is wonderful. This is the classic "movie night out" that modern theatres just don't offer. Also the price is right!!!

Haley Breedlove

A true Vancouver staple. Love the classic and new movies the play. Food & treats inside are affordable and also nice to have a double margarita!

Myles Beeby

This place is definitely worth a visit a few times a year. Great selection of repertory and odd-ball movies and unique theatrical events. We love! Muuuah!

Ted Wallbridge

Great friendly vibe, clean, and good distancing and capacity. Felt so great to get out to a movie and feel safe.

Chris Hughan

Excellent entertaining and performance arts center. Brings in some excellent mind expanding acts. Wish the decor was spruced up a little, and the place was a little cleaner. Distracting when the floor is sticky from spilled drinks every time you move your feet.

Robert Ferguson

Great Theatre and Friendly Staff.Good Service .Need Improvement on Wheelchair Seating and Access but Great Neighborhood Theatre.

Tomas Wittrup

Decent screen, great sound, amazing movies. There isn't a bad seat in the house. And the beer selection is a nice touch too.

Gary H

Staff are great and super nice. Walking distance from broadway or commercial skytrain station/bus loop. Great venue for live acts or movies. Fully licensed for alcoholic beverages which is a huge plus. And the large popcorn is massive. Definitely love coming to this venue. We did have to show vaccine passports and I.D. at the door but it was super quick and efficient to get in and enjoy the performance. No complaints at all

Heather

The absolute best sports bar! What a perfect spot to slam back a few cold ones while watching sportsmen scoring points in their sports matches! Goooooo sports! Slam dunk! Home run! Grand slam! Hat trick!

Keishin Tamaki

Come here for comedy, great classic Anime and indie films! Love Cards Against Humanity!

Bryson T. Phagura

Excellent performances, went to see Aunty Donna live and it was spectacular. Save this theater!

Elliot E

Offered alcoholic beverages which I thought was cool for a movie theatre. Also diverse movie showings. Interesting hipstery atmosphere, but a good theatre.

LJ Quirk

The Rio is a charming event space for talks, movies, live podcasts, and shows. One of my favourite places to visit ever since moving to Vancouver.

Marek Kocourek

Different vibes than Cinestar or any mall cinema experience. This is a movie theater. Interesting movie schedule which includes all time classics, alternative films, but also mainstream (current) titles. Good that there are still such places like Rio where they actually care about movies. There isn't many of them ..so appreciate this.

Kari Berdahl

Beloved Vancouver venue doesn't just show Classics, it also hosts live music, comedy, variety, burlesque and more. Nicely sized 400+ capacity offers popcorn/candy (of course), grilled cheese sandwiches, craft beer, wine, cocktails...solid choice for an evening out.

Nicholas Quintillan

I always love coming here. I’ve come a few times for special events or showings, but I’ve also swung by for regular showings. Always a great time and the concession as some extra treats. The Rio is a genuine Vancouver, especially East Vancouver, staple. Highly recommended!

Alvin Wong

Inside not much has changed since it was the dragon theatre, and for those who have Ben here across the ages, the place will invoke the familiar but different feel as you step past the entrance. Foyer is still a packed and exciting location and the balcony is at the just high, but perfect for the screen height, while the lower levels at ol'skool flat and level. Adult drinks are available, but not allowed up top (we can be responsible!) and the independent ownerships runs quirky ads and promos to let you kill the preshow time. Beverages and snacks are cheap compared to your main cinemas and it's appreciated but patrons. Come for the art house or non mainstream release and experience a by gone era

Olivier Korol

Awesome venue for independent movies, fun theme nights, funky shows and silly trivia.

myles w

Pretty good. Staff were nice, seemed happy, did their job well. Not sure about ID check, a few people sitting behind me didn't look nor sound much older than 14 but maybe they were, who's to know. Good experience I'd say

Kiefer Campney

Never thought I'd subscribe to a membership for a theater but here I am! They always have a great selection of films every month, and their concessions are amazing!

Amir Taghinia

We were SUPER impressed with your Covid and distancing measures! You are AMAZING! KEEP OUR OLD SCHOOL AND NOSTALGIC THEATER GOING!

Jean-Philippe McCluskey

I was robbed 13$ and a friday night. 40mins after the movie was supposed to start someone came out and told us that it wasnt going to work and they were giving out vouchers. I am from Ontario and will never be able to redeem this. I would give this zero stars if i could!

Ryan Paton

This place is amazing! It is a cornerstone of culture in Vancouver. I love all the independent live & film productions that they showcase @ the RIO. Whether you are looking for quirky, hilarious, sexy, retro or some other crazy show. Locally owned. They put so much time and money into fighting for East Van culture. You should totally support them.

Devon Scott

A very "real" and historic venue in one of the trendiest parts of the city. There's something here for literally everyone. You can catch live music, and every kind of film you can possibly imagine. I know they have stage shows, but I've yet to see one. Improv shows are fantastic! The Critical Hit show is a must see if you are at all into tabletop games like D&D

Chris Duncan

Funky, friendly, old school theatre playing unique shows and movies! The Groupon makes for a great night out with friends (check page for the specific show you're seeing to make sure it's good for that event)

David Metcalfe

While the decor could do with an update, the building doesn't appear to be in any state of disrepair. It's more or less just a bland-looking theater. The acoustics could do with some heavy improvements, but there are far worse venues one could choose from in Vancouver.

Aleph DeLucchi

Went for the Rocky Horror Picture Show, and it was amazing. Generally just a common little theatre/cinema, but the event was a highlight of my whole travel to Canada. Recommended.

Kim A.

We were privilaged enought to be the first people in to celebrate the Grand Re-Inventing of the Rio Sport Bar. Lots of room and clean - we felt more Covid safety in place there then in Costco or Superstore. No one pushed passed or even came close to us and it was a great way to watch a game. A great night was had by all and Kudos to the Rio and staff for finding a way to make it work in this crazy world we are all traversing. Only 1 hr by bus and skytrain to the Commerical Station from Pitt Meadows, so no driving either!

matty harris

Long live the Rio! Look no further for the only place left in town for a normal movie experience. Don’t forget to go the lobby and get yourself some snacks ????????

Kitty xoxo

Had a great time at the comedy show, went to see Drew Lynch by myself, sold out show and I got to meet him soon as the show ended. I found myself row seats cause there was one spot open so I had a great time, the openers were awesome too! I hope they invite Drew back again, I'd recommend you check out his YouTube :)

Malena

Rio is iconic. I love the atmosphere, prices and the staff seems genuinely passionate about their job.

Morgan Weafer

What a fantastic theatre experience. Classic films, fresh popcorn and grilled cheese sandwiches to boot. Lovely time at the Rio, will be back.

Lifeasanactor

Its one of a kind. I have never been to a place where theater, comedy and alternative dance shows can work hand in hand. Its a place worth comming by.

Jed san pedro

It's always fun having a beer while watching a movie. Also plenty of free parking spots along Broadway on both sides!

Timothy Morgan

Great venue - very comfortable seats and wonderful service at the food concession.

Damian David Chapman

Always love this Theatre since it's one of the very few long standing ones that have survived. Added pip is its licensed. Word to the wise, if you are tall, you are best advised to not sit in the balcony area.

Jennifer Lynn Bolster

Charming theatre that is a comfortable and relaxing break from modern cineplex movie theaters. We saw fantastic funghi which was an absolutely amazing movie

Ryan McLaren

If you need to read this it means you don't know what you're missing!! Don't like what's on? Give it a week. So much more than a cinema.

ThatJayGuy

Awesome discovery on the Drive ! Saw the DeLorean documentary here, it was great. They also have live shows ????

Tak Takeda

Fun venue hosting everything from improv to niche flims. One of the very few film venues in Vancouver that allows alcoholic drinks while watching the flick.

Ken Wilson

Rio live! This is a great venue for listening to live music. Intimate in a way. The dance floor is very limited, but I don't dance sooooo... perfect.

Barbara Kozicki

Amazing staff, great vintage feel. You can get grilled cheese sandwiches, awesome movie theater popcorn and cheap drinks at the bar. Fabulous venue for both live events and films.

Danaca Lapp

The Rio is my favourite theatre in Vancouver. Was able to see a number of movies over the summer and felt safe doing it. They were able to implement covid safe protocols that kept guests apart. Also a great "Sport Bar" but looking forward to it being a theatre again. 10/10. Also the ads featuring the staff are hilarious.

Kris Lori

A fun place with lots of cool events. My only complaint is that it's difficult to see the stage from the balcony when watching live shows.

Andrew J.

One of the last old fashion movie going experiences in town but a rocky experience more often than not. Went to see Mandy. Show didn’t start at 8:45 because they were slow to admit people. Waited in line at concession only to be turned away because they needed to make more popcorn - Couldn’t get a good seat because I was waiting in said line and had to sit on a stool in the balcony which became uncomfortable during the movie. An experience you can’t download.

Enrique SaaGogs

Amazing retro place with great quality on screen and audio. Great for watching movies and enjoyable events.

Kaye Chapman

Awesome venue, the beating heart of Vancouver when so many places are dying. I will forever support the Rio and I'm so glad it's not getting closed down! Awesome alternative movies, comedy events, and it's great to kick back here with a beer and some popcorn after a hard week. Highly highly recommended!

Vera Sudakova

I have so much love for this place and I'm so happy that it's continuing to thrive as one of the last character theatres in the city. I come here all the time for the classic films, burlesques, comedy shows and other events that they organize, and it's always a fun night - the management has great taste when it comes to organizing their programming. If you're looking for a Cineplex-style experience you might be disappointed, but if you are looking for a good time you never will be.

Julie “Chronfused” Barrera

Love this place. Always take visitors and always go to the local events whenever possible. Cinema with cider and a grilled cheese? Burlesque and artist lectures? Yes please!

Chris Bull

Just returned from a concert at this venue and the price was very reasonable. Hard Rubber Orchestra, a 17+ ensemble played a big band jazz slat on King Crimson to a packed house.

Martin KO

The Rio is the last shred of hope in the soulless city that is VANCOUVER. Real people work, own & patronize this gem of an establishment. The quality of the shows, no matter how avant garde never fails to disappoint. I love coming here, close to transit and nearby dinner options, great cheap beer and snacks and a lively, upbeat atmosphere. It is truly a travesty that this is now falling victim to heartless developers looking to build another foreign owned condo tower. Seriously?!! I am absolutely disgusted and appalled that the city of Vancouver is powerless in salvaging one of its most iconic trademarks. Sickening. Save the Rio!!!

Dan B

Always lovely to spend time here! And for the first live burlesque in 18 months!

Dan McIntyre

My wife and I went here for the first time and saw the film, "Lucky". It was a wonderful time, and is a great place to enjoy cinema. We didn't care for the brand of cider they carry, but the popcorn was perfect. We also learned about a lot of cool places up and down the drive from the rotating ads on the screen before the show. We are stoked to head back again soon!

Maisie Harrison

Good place to see things on stage eg story slam, or films. Although sound quality could be better.

Melissa N

A wonderful theatre. I enjoy the late night movies on fridays! 12 bucks for a movie after 1130! Check the calendar for all the latest events you can even catch some neat burlesque shows as well as comedy acts

Will Anderson

Great old theatre (built in 1938). We were there for an evening of live entertainment to see the Vancouver Story Slam Final

The Girl With The Lighthouse Tattoo

I always have a fantastic time when I see a film at The Rio. Since the pandemic, it's the only movie theater I have been to, and I've seen a number of films here. Great selection of snacks and drinks, including alcohol, some great cult classics and also new films too! I've even seen some incredible directors talk about their films and some of the most memorable moments of my life. You may even see some other events as well, including burlesque and all sorts of other performances. Nothing but good times! LONG LIVE THE RIO. By far the best theater in Vancouver. ????

Aidan Olley

Those movies you wish you could have seen in theatres when they first came out? You can probably catch em here. Local/small filmmakers who want to gain some followers? This place puts on smaller films fairly often. Oh, and the concession is super awesome!

Janine Cardinal (Cara)

The staff were so cool and down to earth, i purchased a Groupon and they were pretty cool we were a tad late. I will definitely come back and support this local business ????

Paddy O'Connor

Friendly staff, great films and a wonderful time. If you're attending a lot you can join their rewards club scheme. This allows you to get free refills of popcorn and soda as well as 2 dollars off each ticket.

Ellie Hogan

This place has such great atmosphere, the staff are really friendly, and it serves alcohol! Throw in some cult classic movies, and what more could you possibly want in a theatre?

Mitchell Pozar

Excellent atmosphere for watching niche movies. Seats are a little uncomfortable if you are tall. No outside food allowed even for marathons.

luisa

Who doesn't like to go to the movies!? Business is open once again! yeah!

Bran-tastic

Great venue for throwback movies and live entertainment (comedy shows, burlesque, live music). Licensed, so you can have a drink in the theatre. Old school movie theatre seating, which kind of sucks if you're sitting behind a tall person. Has a balcony too.

Tim Nguyen

Customer service is abysmal. I contacted them about my ticket but never heard back. I always have good communication with other theatres across the city. Go to other places where they respect you.

Jedidiah Gordon-Moran

Great independent theatre with a good selection of films and programming but the pre-show ads are so aggressively annoying (awful music, terrible, kitschy design) that they make me not want to return. Please make it stop.

l mansell

Amazing as always and so many good films

Walter Gammeter

Great movies. Friendly staff. Drinks in the theatre. Neat spot.

Eric Etienne

This is the only place in town that screens older movies on a regular basis, and their tagline "an experience that can't be downloaded" is absolutely correct. Nothing beats watching a classic film on the big screen in a giant room filled with other people! Just remember to bring ID and leave the kids at home.

Toby Jesso

Great venue and having a glass of wine with my popcorn brought the movie culinary experience to a whole new level.

Kent MacWilliam

Classic theatre with awesome movies and love performances/talks. And beer! You'll look what you find here

Tom Lynch-Watson

Really cool smaller space for movies or shows. Get there in time for a drink or two before.

David Ng

Awesome theater with an independent vibe. The staff are passionate to share their obvious love of the performance medium, from lesser known films, and foreign flicks to burlesque, musical, or comedic shows on their stage.

Alex Pirie-Hay

There's no other place with such ecclectic and great taste for films, shows and events.

Nigel Kellett

Clean, great service. Licensed and great popcorn. Quirky shows bit well worth it. Fantastic as a movie theater !!

Ryan Ventura

One of my favourite places in town. To me everytime it's like stepping into a time machine, back to the best parts of my childhood watching all my favourite movies. I'm a regular there on date nights and nights out with family and friends. Turn off your phone and enjoy.

Terry Calderbank

What a great experience. I came with a group for the gentlemen hecklers event and wasn't disappointed. Very personal and informal venue with fun staff.

Teresa Daniels

Seats are super comfy. There is wine to drink. What's not to like??Almost Famous, one of my all time favorite shows.

Mark in Victoria

Just a fantastic venue for our neighbourhood - an eclectic mix of first run movies, live music, burlesque, comedy and more. We never go to the mainstream movie theatres any longer, and are really happy the Rio is showing first run mainstream movies like The Campaign and Batman Rises, along with great cult and second run movies. Prices cannot be beat, either for admission, for the food and beverage offerings, and for the beer and spirits offerings. Staff is ALWAYS friendly, whether you're some hip 20 something or some old fart like me lol. The owner is very sociable and community involved. Really glad this is part of our neighbourhood and community.

Jesse Couture

Such an awesome little venue. Quality films, friendly staff, great beer (yeah, beer!). #supportlocal

Odessa Cadieux-Rey

Nice community feel. Great, unique snack and drink options (even mead!). Affordable, good movies. I rarely see a film anywhere else.

Edward McClung

One of my favorite things in or near Vancouver. Proper theater with balcony and bar. They do late night showings and niche films. Super awesome local cinema.

Thereysa Tabert

If you're up top, you can't see much as there's a wall that is way too high. Sound quality was just okay.

Tristyn Lippingwell

Incredibly fun! No matter what you're seeing the Rio is one of the best theatres I've ever had the pleasure of visiting. With a mix of live shows and movie entertainment, The Rio, is dedicated to providing a fantastic experience for all guests everytime I've been there. Try the margarita by the way, it's delicious!

Matt Law

Amazing management, the theatre could really really use some modernization and upgrades though. The seats in particular. You make a good Tom Collins.

Andres Soissa

Local theatre that shows movies and excellent plays. Do not miss the Critical Hit Show at the end of each month.

Jasper

My favorite place in the city

Sarah Closson

Love the Rio, they show some really unique movies and would highly recommend one of the burlesque shows that happen there! It's really the only place in town you can see some of these movies on the big screen and it is so cool.

Josh Sitter-Konishi

Great place, I love the fact that they show all older movies and anime that I have not seen in theaters for many many years. They have also been a venue for music or talks. I love the architecture and also the fact that they have a liquor license. Always happy when they host anything because you know that adding a beer or 2 is always helpful for making any talk or panel more interesting.

Rachel Kierszenblat

Fun place, cheap popcorn. Saw grease here and the MC's were fun and energetic with the costume contest.

Sebastien Galina

The best movie-going experience is one where you get to uniquely share a viewing with an excited, film-loving crowd. You get this here every time.

Alan Zisman

Craft beer and wine with your repertory movie.!

Shannon Werry

Very cool theater. This evening was my first experience there and the balcony was uncomfortably warm and it made the show much less enjoyable. The biggest complaint was that I was unable to see much of the show and for the price of that ticket that was a huge disappointment. I didn't have anyone tall in front of me but the seats are in such a position that it was very difficult to see unless I leaned way over and ended up with a very stiff neck. Otherwise, the experience was great. The sound was good and the employees were wonderful. Food at the concession was good as well. I'll go back but hopefully if it's for another big event I won't get stuck sitting in the sauna/balcony.

Dane Di Piazza

A great place to watch obscure or older movies arthouse movies. Recent digital projection upgrades and surround sound have made the Rio even better then it was before. Their grilled cheese is a great snack to eat while sitting down to watch a movie.

Maret Christiansen

Rio Theatre is simply grande! I love the kinds of films I can see there, and the layout is such that most seats are good seats. It's a long space and the options are many for patrons like me who are perhaps a it picky as to where to be seated. The staff seem to be happy to work there, I've noticed, and that would say something about Management, eh? I like supporting this independent theater.

Donald Yapp (Hungry Ghost)

Fun theatre with a bar. Sometimes will have live shows too. Mostly art house films. Easy access via 99b line, or Commercial Drive Station.

Corbet Rutzer (crutzer)

By far my favourite movie theatre in Vancouver, the Rio is home to a unique mix of Hollywood hits, cult classics, special screenings and live events. Plus.... they serve boozel!! And reasonably priced too! ($5.75 for a draft beer at time of review). Make sure you check the late night double features!

Shahrokh Javady

Go there if you wanna watch an actual movie, and not just some marvel or whatever kids watch these days ???? Book ahead as they are always sold out. Kudos to Rio Theatre team

David Knights Cowling

Great selection of attractions night in and night out. Love catching movies there, with the real butter popcorn and classic seating.

Krystal Rutkowski

Great place, but do wish they played movies at more reasonable times ????‍♀️ I’d come down more often if movies played earlier rather then 9pm on a Sunday or 1130 on a Tuesday —can never make it the the rhps nights due to late times

Gabriella Franco

One of the best experiences in Vancouver. I love this place and everyone in it. I've gone to a few shows here, each one different and fun. They have everything from burlesque, comedy, movies.... Comfortable, good drinks, real butter for your popcorn and super friendly staff. Plus, it's super affordable! Especially for what you get out of it. 10/10 will go again.

elbrock

Now open, the Rio feels like home again.Friendly helpful staff and safe and clean seats well spaced.

Jennie Yan

Came here recently to check out a VIFF film. Customer service was awesome - ushers to help find seating and provide lighting and service at the concessions. A big thank you to the kind gentleman who helped carry our glasses of wine to our seats (my hands were already full with popcorn and snacks!) Oh yes, they service wines, spirits and beer - definitely a bonus? The Rio is such a local gem!

Cormz Zilla

Single screen local Cinema/theatre. Very old school style, loved and supported by the community as it hosts lots of events. They tend to show more cerebral films than big blockbusters.

Jessica Wilson

I love the Rio. They have great shows and regularly show my favourites. Also their live shows are KILLER definitely check out Critical Hit or one of the many Geekenders burlesque shows. They also serve alcohol at adult only events and have awesome snack options.

Kevin Tan

One of the few Indies left. Come here for the regular films, stay for the Rocky Horror show and get a beer while you're at it!

M Goldy

What can i say !!!!. From the time you walk in with a meet and greet from people whom like their job. And having that luxury of having a bevvy of choice and popcorn...its a great day

Daniel Díaz

Wow! A small and cozy theatre! I really enjoyed the magic in the advertising at the very beginning. I really like the Beautiful sound system... For sure is gonna be one of my favorite places in Vancouver to visit from time to time.

Sarah Jackson-Brown

Amazing shows, good selection of snacks and (alcoholic) drinks!

Rebecca Li

Awesome music! Vancouver ukulele festival 2017.

Silvia Barbosa

An amazing venue. Comfortable seating, great bar service and room to dance in front.

H 604

Awesome place for events!

James Qiu

Came here for When Marnie Was There and went upstairs because I'm not interested in the alcohol-smell of the first floor. That's when I found out the top floor is primarily a kids zone. The railings obstructed my view (which was already bad enough because the screen was small from where I was sitting) and I was treated to the noise of children. However, I liked that the arm-rest could be moved to accommodate couples and people who preferred more room (me).

rene radomski

Went to watch Critical Hit Show, super fun. Walking into the theater you get a "blast from the past" feeling that i love. The smell of fresh popcorn, the look and atmosphere, a great experience. The show itself was great and i would recommend checking out one of the many things going on at this place.

Sue Dawn

I appreciate that u can see on the big screen movie classics, new and old. I had missed Wonder Woman The summer blockbuster but She returned to The Rio. It's the cozy Cinema Paradiso feel right here in EVan. The staff are cute n menu more than boring plexi. And there's booze so basically perfect.

Ian Beer

Retro vibe and all the better for it in these days of bland multiplex movie theatres.

X Gentry X

Love this theatre, I hope Vancouver learns to keep landmarks like this spot. Always a good time. Great variety of shows and love that they play classics.

Greg Dunn

I like that you can order tickets online and walk in when you get there and your on the list and a over 19 section if you like to drink at the movies

Trevor LeBlond

Great theatre that has charm, amazing staff, and awesome movie picks!

Ray Besson

Watched Why Don't We perform here. Could be a great venue but with a sold out show of over 500 people and NO air conditioning on the day of the event I was disappointed! I'd prefer people remember a show because of the music not because it was smoldering hot!

Maxine Shewan

Always a fun time. The cinema has plenty of seating, great popcorn and beer options and always have something interesting on.

Justin Mclarty

It's an east van institution. Went there to see the original beetlejuice. I absolutely love this place it feels like a theater should feel. I live that people dress up to go see an older movie and I love the fact that they even PLAY older movies. Always loved this place. Always will.

Joel Harris

I love the Rio. It's one of my favourite Vancouver institutions. I have so many fond memories of spending time there. I highly recommend it for someone who loves the arts and is looking for something a little different from the same old boring theatre experience you get elsewhere.

Hanging with The GrahamCrackers

The venue was spectacular. The staff were all very nice and accommodating. Highly recommend 10/10

Iain Allan

A lot of great quirky event. Efficient service at concession/bar. Very well ran.

Robin Sukorokoff

Love to see movies & anything else put on here, it's magic & fun & licenced!!

John Pozer

An important Commercial Drive entertainment hub. In addition to movies, we’ve seen excellent live music, comedy, and burlesque shows. Comfortable seats. Great screen & sound. Licensed, too. Recently revised to Sports Bar status in order to navigate the Covid-19 restrictions. Midnite madness, cult classics, and eclectic programming makes the Rio a popular and essential East Van experience. Grab your popcorn ????

Nicolau Sarquis Aiex

Nice venue, always a good selection of movies and n good beer.

Holly (100.Day.Journey)

This place is awesome. Fun old movies, random burlesque shows and other music. Definitely a go to!

Brandi Ciampichini

Great atmosphere and licensed:) Must try the grilled cheese next time! Looked yummy

tina tag

Love the theatre but the staff are hot and cold. Practically give you the evil eye if you ask for anything "extra". Ie they said coffee and sugar were on the side (which they werent) and when i had to ask for them they gave me loads of attitude ???? unfortunately this is the case with customer service in Canada nowadays

Julien-Pier Belanger

This is the best Cinema in Vancouver. No questions asked. When you enter, the Rio has a way of making you feel transported in another dimension.

Matthew Smithdeal

Great theatre. Lots of interesting showings and they serve booze!

Joseph Cruz

Between the Rio and the Vancity theatre, you have two great independent cinema options for non-mainstream viewing in Vancouver, but I go to the Rio more often as their approach to moviegoing is often entertaining and fun to partake in. Friendly staff and great service. The movies never do actually start on time, but that often isn't a bad thing.

Alex tom

Saw two films in an afternoon from VIFF; nice venue, comfy chairs and quite clean.

Timothy Haraldson

A van city classic. The food and drink options are great. Beerb and a grilled cheese while I watch an old favorite? Yes please.

Jordan Serben

I've been meaning to write a review for the Rio Theatre for some time now, but what can I say that hasn't already been said. It's a good place to catch a decent flick or a rock and roll show. You really can't disparage a place where you can watch Breakfast at Tiffany's and enjoy a nice cold one.

Jennifer Chu

The timing to catch a couple of Wong Kar-Wai classics (thanks to being newly introduced to the acting legend Tong Leung) was a pleasant surprise. I really hope we are privileged to see more in the future. With the provincial mandates protocols, we need to do what we can to support these local businesses. I have no problem taking the extra wait time for entry as long as proper scanning, along with validating ID is taken.

Heidi Lee

I love going to the Rio, popcorn and drinks are tasty and they have great prices! First time back in awhile and they have new cozy seats!

Ben Z Cooper

The Rio Theatre is a staple of Vancouver culture. They are a great small, local theatre which has an eclectic mix of old classic, cult, family, and other films. They also have reasonable rates for rentals so, there is loads of other programming; from burlesque to comic festivals.

Matthew W

Nothing beats the Rio <3 The staff is as wonderful as the shows they put on. **edit** Unfortunately, The Rio has a new policy that rescinds a promise to longtime supporters. Why reject old rio passes? Especially when the new option is more than 2x the price, and limited to a year. I guess it's understandable, but I wouldn't have bought the pass had I known.

Meesh

I've been going here since I was a teenager and have had so many great memories. They have engaging camp movies like Rocky Horror and the Room, old school classics, cult films, indie films, and even fun event nights (D&D, Cards against Humanity, murder mystery, etc.). Absolutely love it here but all theatres have had it rough during covid so please please please come out and check out a movie :)

Duke Jivetalker

Coolest theater in Van, a cherishes venue, anime, arthouse, burlesque, random goodness the Rio has it.

Megan Penno

Great movie options and a very cool theater. The movie I went to didn't have assigned seating so get in early if you want to have your pick! Good drink options and I would 100% recommend the toasted sandwich/grilled cheese it was great! Also make the most of the unlimited toppings for the popcorn.

Ailysh Greenway

The Rio has been a favourite haunt of mine for many years! It was great to go back, have a cocktail, eat the best popcorn in town...and watch a movie ☺️

Rhandi Neal

Shows films no one else will. Love the snacks and it's licensed to boot!

Burgundy Brixx

An important icon in East Vancouver. The Rio Theatre was the first movie theatre in Vancouver to fight for alcohol licencing - and they won! Showing first-run movies, cult classics and a wide range of live events including concerts, variety shows, burlesque and theatre, the Rio is a friendly and affordable haven of great entertainment in a neighborhood with a pointed need for such a venue. Beautifully restored, The Rio boasts a classic moviehouse feel with just the right amount of hipness. The wide plush seats are heavenly and the concessions serve a nice range of tasty snacks alongside the traditional movie theatre fare and aforementioned adult bevvies!

Lucy Fenn

Support local! This spots really does alot for the community and goes all out for events. Plus, beer with your movie - and grilled cheese sammies. Great Staff.

Jewels

Wonderful place to come see movies or shows!!! Please help keep the Rio open!!! One of the coolest places I have been to see a show!!! Rio has been a landmark in Vancouver for well prob my whole life if not longer!!!!!! If you come for a show you will not regret it! Buy tix in advance.

Dara Kenny

Always such a fun night out . Everybody loves the rio

Alvaro Peralta

Love the retro and the best concession Ever! The grilled cheese is delicious.

Rocealin Racert

Rad. Awesome rotating options of films, the audience is always enthusiastic and you can drink beer at the theatre.

Kirk Chantraine

Amazing retro theatre where you can drink, see great movies and excellent performances!

Baxter Bullock

One of my favourite spots in Vancouver! The theater for the real movie lover. This place just has such a nice vibe and I like how they play cult classics and older films, as well as new releases that you might not find at the main theaters. Great food and popcorn, and nice to throw back a beer while you're watching a flick. They also usually have really good groupons.

Chris Torres

Great venue, great movies.

Anne Honeycutt

The Rio is a cultural hub. A place where the performing community of Vancouver and film lovers go to feel kindred and nourished.

Tilahun Worku

Seats are very comfortable. It is a home of nice movies. They have great shows.

Joey Mullins

Classic venue. I've seen music and live improv here and it's one of my favourite places to go! Affordable, rustic, tasty food and you can even order a drink here! Good fun :)

Libris Simas Ferraz

Small and intimate, it was a great venue for the acoustic concert in attended (The Naked and Famous on their Stripped tour). Just had some trouble finding the merch table!

Kelsi Proulx

I've seen a few shows here now and it's always a good experience. I love that they show older movies so people can reexperience their favourites on the big screen. I took my mom to see It's a Wonderful Life for Christmas this year, she was so happy! The audience always seems more relaxed than at a regular theatre too.

Tia Dawson

This is the first time I've been to the Rio Theatre and it was terrific. We came for a concert and the sound was amazing!

Dave Knight

Awesome single-screen independent theatre! They have loads of special screening events, and also do performances like director talks and burlesque. They’re licensed (which is rare for a movie theatre in the city) and concession prices aren’t insane.

Captain Enigma

good place, watched The Birds (1963 i think???) annd yeah popcorns great

Sutton Group West Coast Realty

Great old, classic movies, full bar, live comedy, documentaries etc.

Valerie Boucher

Absolutely love the Rio! They host great live events that range from stand-up comedy, burlesque, and musical theatre. They are always playing a great variety of movies including awesome late night screenings. The staff are fun and friendly and they have the BEST popcorn! The theatre is licensed so you can enjoy an adult beverage with your show but there is also a balcony for minors where alcohol is not permitted. Some of my favourite events to attend at the Rio are The Gentleman Hecklers, The Critical Hit Show, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and any burlesque performance they host! Go and have a great time!

Patrick MacDonald

It's an old school theatre. Very cool vibe from the place, the staff are wonderful, there is food and alcohol served with really good pricing.

Kai-Lee MacBain

They're licensed and have candy. Go see one of the geekender's shows or one of their late night movies. The line for the bathroom can get pretty crazy at big shows, but it's totally worth it.

Max Hill

The Rio is an East Vancouver institution for good reason. The prices are fair, the snacks and drinks are on point, and the staff are friendly with a good sense of humour. Their screenings are equal parts modern hits and loveable throwbacks, and their schedule is easily accessible on their well kept-up Facebook page. My personal favourites are the frequent Rocky Horror Picture Show screenings, which are very faithful to tradition, but I've also seen countless amazing film screenings as well as a couple of concerts and other performances. Times are tough with COVID-19 so if you love the Rio as much as I do please buy a gift card on their site so you can see a movie again once the restrictions are lifted and it's safe to do so again!

Christopher Williams

The Rio theater... how do I love thee? Let me count the ways... All of the ways. Hell, I'm getting married there next year. 'Nuff said.

Manu Gill

All movie theatres should have beer/wine like the Rio! They consistently play a wide array of unique movies that most other theatres don't. Highly recommend for a night out or a date night :)

Rich Baldry

Rio Theatre is doing their absolute best to put on a show in these annoying times. It's a haven of cinema in a world of movie blandness. May it live long and prosper.

GHAZM Band

Purchased a ticket prior to lockdown. Now unable to make it to a screening. Was refused a refund. My inability to make it to a screening is out of my control, the lockdown is out of my control. I think it is unfair to refuse a refund in this case.

Ramon Klose

They always have a great selection of movies, and the popcorn here is awesome.

Kaleigh Henry

Love this theatre. So much charm. The owner knows how to curate a wide array of films so there is something for everyone to enjoy and discover. And the live shows are dynamite so if you ever get a chance to purchase tix to one, then do it!

Vince Montgomery

Classic building. Lovely theatre. May have disability challenges due to its age. Right across from commercial Broadway skytrain

Ian Chisholm

It's an older neighborhood theatre, neither amazing or lacking. They do have a liquor license so some shows are 19+ (expect to be ID'd) and double check the listing before you head out if you're taking any youngsters.

Andrew Mills

Even when it was a sports bar the Rio keeps the magic alive, happy they've started playing movies again!

James Cobalt

I've seen two of the greatest shows ever at this theatre. It's an amazing experience.

Kat Munro

Love this theatre! Whether it's for a movie, show or burlesque night, always a good time popcorn is great and booze is served!

Magali Signourel

A very nice and comfy theatre. Love the movie selection and you can eat and drink a beer too ! Perfect place for a chill and nice evening or to watch some good old movie favorites.

Nick Taylor

What can I also about the Rio. They always have a good movie to go see or a live show too entertaine you.I just Love the Rio.

Jeff Alexander

A great old-school theater showing things you won't find anywhere else. It's worth it to keep up with their calendar and attend often to see new indies or old classics.

Matthew Hooper

Beautiful venue! Also, Marina was incredibly accommodating. Can't wait to go back!

Alex Dee

Awesome little oldschool theatre that serves alcohol with old/offbeat films. Definitely check out this highlight of the drive!

Marcela Moreira

An experience you can't download. That's their slogan and it couldn't be better. Having a place where I can enjoy non-blockbuster movies as well as classics in the big screen is priceless. Do yourself a favor and go be amazed by the experience.

Ryan King

Hands down my favourite theatre in the city. Easy to get to, conveniently located on Broadway/Commercial, right next to the train. They have a great lineup of films every month, ranging from comedies to romance to horror to SciFi to documentaries. But where the Rio really shines is in its live shows. Fantastic improv, standup, storytelling, burlesque, epic role playing fantasy games, you name it. The Rio supports local arts, and the locals support the Rio. Also the best beer selection of any licensed theatre in Vancouver. Get the adults kid combo - small popcorn, full size candy bar, and a draft beer for less than $12.

Randy Clarke

Doesn't get any better. Classic films to the best live bands!!!

Tabatha Stahl

My partner and I saw the Rocky Horror Picture Show last night at The Rio. I love this theater and the vibe. 19 plus, Adult beverages, popcorn with real butter, treats and fun! It was my first time seeing this film and it sure was a treat. The audience was dressed up and looked amazing. The live cast was hilarious. Throughly enjoyed this event!

Dive Bars & Greasy Spoons

Thanks to Covid19, one of the iconic venue of cult movies in Vancouver has been now turned into a "sports bar". You can grab some beers, hard liquor drinks, and popcorn and watch games on the big screen. Once you enter, you are ushered to your seat, then you can come out, place order and go in again. Pros - Good social distancing and signage, pricing on beers and single drinks is $6 and double is $9, clean seating, lobby, and washrooms, friendly bar staff and manager guy, drinks and snacks are served at your seat. Cons - Food menu limited to popcorn and snacks, borderline standoffish behaviour from young guy at door when entering, and was asked to finish my second drink and leave within 15 mins as they had a private event starting in 30 mins. No notice of such event at entrance or anywhere inside, and wasn't told so by bartenders when ordering either. Plenty of better options with better service, extensive food and drinks menu available on Commercial Drive, this is good for a one time visit only if you want to experience the 'revamp'.

Alexandria Devereux

Local gem! Such a great piece of Vancouver’s heritage right here! Constantly has interesting, offbeat/cult screenings with friendly staff & a cool vibe overall. Rly enjoy coming here!

Benjamin Bolliger

Nice 'art house' style theatre. Nice concession that the usual movie snacks and has a bar.

Lisa Warsh-Chartier

I liked the theatre. Saw a wonderful documentary on Paul Simon. Special kind of atmosphere there. I will be back!

Jay Laxdal

Love me an ol' school theatre vibe. great staff, good food, an drink for the ones doing the adulting an the like . Me likem' live shows. My perks are my own. I go for confortable seats an' fun shows an music an live stuff . Rocky Horrer Picture shows, like every other month too!!

Theshark180

Love this place support your local theater

Mara Cain

Love this place. No where better to see an old movie or sing Grease lyrics at the top of your lungs. Excellent spot to get nostalgic.

Israel Garcia

Bit expensive. But most movies are good. Good ???? too.

After Hours Supply Co

Always a great experience. Late night cult classics, art house films & everything in between. Situated in a clean & stylish old theater. They offer great drinks & lots of snacks. What more can you ask for?

Leah Fortune

This old theater may be smaller than the other. Yet the character of it and the friendly staff makes up for it. As while the drinks and real food.

Patricia O'Brien

Best local theatre ever. Eclectic shows...movies, music, speakers....and yummy food and drinks. More than just a movie and popcorn!

Leon Beauvais aka redhalo

Watched "Mandy" starring Nicolas Cage on the big screen!

Catherine Bouchard

really cool place with great events and good movies! i like that the schedule always changes and that you get loads of different styles of movies/documentaries etc.

Victoria Jamieson-McCaskill

A really fun quirky theater that's always got something fun going on. I love coming to the Critical Hit Show every month!

Jennifer McKay

Love this theatre! Slushies margaritas, bizarre shows, awesome staff. This is my home away from home.

Bryan Leon

This small old establishment is wonderful for small events. I enjoyed my show very much.

Christine Van Tol

Absolutely LOVE this place and wish l had discovered it much sooner! Love the unique shows they put on (I'm a Geekenders fan for life now!) and the variety of fun older movies they show are always a lot of fun! The ticket prices are a great value and it's always nice to enjoy a refreshing drink while enjoying a show. The staff is fabulous too...Keep up the great work!

Nevin Thompson

I saw Lush here. I liked that they had beer on sale. If you go to a concert be sure to check out the balcony.

Jeremy Hannaford

I really enjoy going to this theater. The atmosphere is welcome, the crowds are great when it comes to watching classics. The only negative is parking can be a real pain in the butt. Otherwise, it's definitely a theater you should go to.

Denis Yuriev

Ooh man the nostalgia atmosphere! Incredible! Went there to see Alien for woman's day. Good times. Take your date there.

Heather Anne Korte

Great old movies, nerdy events and a different selection of food without the normal elevated prices that you’d expect from a movie theatre!

Thomas Wade

Great venue for live theatre or cinema. Excellent drinks and snacks, good seats and pretty good views of the stage/screen from everywhere.

Teddie Geach

The Rio is great! They always have cool independent films playing and even some old classics. The best part is they don't bombard you with obnoxious loud ads before the film. They do have some local ads, but it's quiet enough that you can still have a conversation and can ignore them if you like.

Kevin Eugene

I love the Rio and glad the 'save the Rio' campaign panned through. They have such unique and special events. Thank you Rio staff!

Abi Laws

Comfortable seating, unique shows, and great selection of refreshments!

Linds B

I. Love. This. Place. My spouse and I regularly attend Talent Time, as well as see the great selection of classic films and new releases. Great assortment of drinks - which is something I believe all theatres should have - cause hey, we're sensible consenting adults. I was also glad to see the outpouring of people to help save the theatre, as obviously there are others out there who love this place as much as we do. It truly is an experience you can't download, and the massive multiplex theatres lack what this place is full of - heart, history, and quirkiness.

Alice Crawford

Great independent movie theatre showing a myriad of films and events from VIMFF/mountain film festival, old classics, cult hits, art house, comedy nights etc. They serve a selection of beers, cider and excellent butter popcorn!

Ian Muirhead

Awesome local theatre that has comedy shows, documentaries and cult classics. You can grab dinner, a drink and watch a show.

Anders Erickson

Classic movie house and performance theater. Showing a wide variety of cult classic and off-the-wall films as well as Oscar nominated films. Live burlesque shows, comedy, and other performance art. *Fully Licenced with service*

Kyle

Tiny, tiny, tiny, seats. Nothing like watch the movie while straddling the person I front of you between your legs. Seats for ants! Good selection of “classic” films and fun events. Also the best sugar laden cheap and dirty whisky sours.

Ahmed Muhsin

If you wanna enjoy some real Vantage theater experience in Vancouver !!! Then don't miss Rio

Bobbie Bees

I stopped going to the Rio Theater a while ago. Especially for live performances. The Rio sold its soul to boozers. There is absolutely no place to escape the stench of booze in this place during live concerts or other performances. The only saving grace that slightly redeems the Rio is that during movies they often (not always) open the balcony as an alcohol free zone.

Terry Braumberger

Relaxing old style theatre , warm staff and great flicks . It's kinda of like a trip to The Seventies for me .

Louis Cyphre

could use a few more snacks like for example baked goods

Emily Kerr

Amazing venue for watching old and new movies and live podcasts. Staff is friendly and helpful. And you can get alcoholic drinks while you are here!! BONUS :)

caitlin norlin

LOVE the Rio theatre, what a special place for vancouver to have. I love coming here as often as I can.

Sydney Pazurik

The Rio made me a die hard Rocky Horror fan, forever grateful and will keep going each year as halloween tradition. also brownie points for vegan movie popcorn! :)

Amory Adrian

Rocky Horror and Teton movies!!!

drew small

Great place to see a movie, have a bite and a beverage. Standard 2nd run and late-night / cult favourite show list.

Patrick Bonello

Absolutely Fantastic!!! So much fun visiting this gem of a cinema. The staff are amazingly passionate and the billings are really diverse. Caters for so many different events for fans of cult films and classic movies. Vancouver is lucky to have the Rio. Easy to find by jumping on the train along the Expo line and lots of great places to eat within walking distance.

Taylor Anne

Words cant begin to describe how much I love this place. I go at least once a month to an event or to see a classic film. The food is delicious and not overly expensive like other theatres. I also love the staff and atmosphere there too. I was just there for the Kurtis Connor comedy show and it was great. Give this place a go if you haven’t yet!

Kyle Popovich

So proud this venue exists, amazing location and I just love movies!!!!!

Joe Fair

Love the plays and live performances here! Cool niche selection of indie and lesser known films.

J W

Love this place. They've got diverse shows with a lot of character. The place/ambiance is classic East Van grunge. If you want something gentrified, clean and sparkling bright - this is not the place for you. But if you're a Bons on Broadway kind of person, then this goes hand in hand.

Majmala Mala

Rio theater is a independent multimedia theater to watch both movies and live performances. Also they offers free event such as screening live shows on big screen like GoldenGlobes or Oscar or Olympic openings show etc. Seats are comfortable plus bar and food available. Its an funky old theater.????

Julia Schertzer

With the wave of independent theaters closing down, it’s refreshing to still find a place with character in Vancouver. And the Rio doesn’t just have movies, they have shows and other events that really bring the community together. Go to this theater, have a good time, and support local business.

Christa Watson

Fun place to watch off beat plays and long forgotten movies. Staff is amazing, but the whole drinks thing can make some people excited and forget to pace themselves.

Lee Duncan

LOVE this place! I've been a decent few times now, and its the only theatre I really go to anymore! Great, helpful & friendly staff, and they have always went out of their way to help and make an enjoyable experience. This last visit was my first visit since this whole COVID pandemic, and they have everything done very safely, cleanly, and comfortably. It didn't negatively affect the movie experience whatsoever. In fact, it was almost nicer, as you could put stuff down on the seats beside you, as they enforce spacing between all groups. Anyways, I couldn't recommend this place more highly to anyone who is even slightly interested. Will be back soon for sure.

TBA

Lost my business after you supported the vaccine passport. Hopefully you go under. Do not go here people they support discrimination. We will never forget. You'll never erase the face of discrimination from this place. Its ugly

Julien C

They are true animation lovers. From 2D to 3D through stopmotion, the Rio Theatre team is dedicated to help you discover or re-discover some of the best animation movies from today and the past few years. When all the big multiplex are only screening the latest Disney/Pixar, the Rio will let you see movies from France, Brazil, Japan, and all around the world. THE place to be for animation fans.

Liz Martinson

Retro feel...but had the membership card literally thrown at me at the end of the movie by staff member behind counter!

Jeremy Smith

This is the best little theatre in town! Full of character and vibe. Screen & stage - this indie theatre has some of the best shows around.

Lauren P

Comfortable seats. Delicious popcorn. I'd be interested in going to more movies and events there. The other pleasant thing was that I was warm in the theatre; many times when I go to watch movies, I get quite cold. It feels good to put my money back into the community, and supporting this theatre is doing just that.

Aysha Maas

It's an absolute gem of a place! Very cute little theatre to visit and watch amazing cult classics with effervescent crowds

Sarah

The annual Harry Potter burlesque show is *unbelievably* good. I saw several burlesque shows in Toronto and thought Vancouver would have a hard time measuring up. Boy was I wrong. It was hands down the best burlesque show I’ve ever seen.

Jessica Streeter

Wonderful staff. They put on amazing events

Anna Newman

I really enjoy the atmosphere of this theater and the staff is tremendously friendly. I appreciate the wide variety of movie genres, some of them suit my taste, some of them not. What I do not understand is why old movies I already watched and can find online get played so often. Equally movies that are played at Cineplex. I wish that screen time would be used to show more international independent movies.

Peter Morrison

Wonderful Independent theatre with a great range of entertainment and movies love seeing shows here.

Keane McMillan

Best theatre experience in the city.

Hannah Adam

#savetherio The Rio is such an iconic Vancouver landmark! They do everything there, burlesques, indie movies, movie marathons, alternative movies, theatre, you name it, they do it! One of my first experiences with the Rio was a 2 full day long marathon of the entire harry potter series, they sold butter beer and had mini wizard competitions between movies and it was truly wondrous! Go onto their website, facebook or something, and go to any show and I guarantee you’ll have an incredible time!

Alexandr Machula

A great mix of entertainment from movies to improv to rock concerts to burlesque. Grilled cheese and beer at the concession is very nice.

Bernard Sheppard

Old School type theatre, Great to see this place still survives :-)

Konrad Hillenaar

Not happy with the latest junk from Hollywood? This theater plays alot of excellent classics.

Joshua Harris

Highly recommend sitting in the main seating area rather then the balcony if you value leg room if you are somebody with longer legs. Great movies spanning over multiple cultures and directors.

Ellie M

Love it here. So many great shows - film and live alike. True subculture hub. Cult classic castle!

William Fielding

The Rio is the best thing about living in Vancouver. They show anything from classics to hot new movies and everything in between. Awesome selection of drinks and snacks. The popcorn is so much better than Scotia or cineplex. Maybe it’s not but it feels like it is cause this place’s vibe is so fun and wholesome. It’s the best. Staff are all super fun and friendly and probably all film nerds.

okay okayy

Always wonderful staff. Great seating. Entertaining live shows. Hard not to love.

Richard Hillers

Iam sorry...i appreciate the effort but...it was kind of lame tonight. You need to have a live band to accompany. Your Pink Floyd concert/burlesque was awesome last year...And don't be so body friendly...nobody really wants to see some obese person strut their stuff on stage...its an addiction (overeating) like anything else...its off putting....sorry

O'Shea Arrieta

Best theatre in Vancouver playing a selection of new and old movies plus live entertainment. Definitely recommend the 'Big Kids Combo' from concession!

h5y

The lady who runs this place is a whackjob. Spend your money elsewhere.

Paul Alexander

The Rio theatre is an amazing building that was saved from the brink of extinction by the help of many wonderful people (Kevin Smith and Ryan Reynolds to name a couple.). It's an amazing venue that I hope lives on for many years to come.

Mark Thorburn

Fantastic independent theatre showing movies and, once the Covid restrictions end, various forms of live entertainment. Highly recommended.

psantos

First time here. It feels like a big family. I really enjoyed it. The only downside for me is that the popcorn is too salty.

K

I will never forget my first time here. It was during the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) about 7 years ago, and when I entered the building, it smelled like a giant urinal. Then I had to sit in there for more than 2 hours, so one can imagine how dirty I felt. The movie had a lot of explicit intimate scenes too, so that just made the whole experience worst. Later experiences are much better, mainly because the smell is finally gone, but I will never forget the first time.

Deb Graffenstyne

Best place to watch movies and/or live entertainment. Home of the notorious Game of Thrones Live burlesque show.

Katherine Poch

Lots of fun to go to, they show tons of stuff here, staff aren't particularly engaging though

Sophie L

Love the rio. Great theatre, great burlesque, great place to watch flims. It's a gem.

Kat

Most fun and unique theatre around. They have exciting special events, great movies, and amazing drinks. Guaranteed good time every visit.

Warren uuijijl

Best popcorn in Vancouver, hands down. They also have a movie suggestion box if you want to have your voice heard on what to play next. Very classic movie theater feel, also a great place to catch a live music performance or event. They play classics like The Big Lebowski every once in a while. One of the places in Vancouver that you should visit at least once!

Sam Kellett

The only art house theatre in Vancouver. I’ve spent many a night enjoying movies at the rio. The staff are lovely, the service is great, and they have a great selection on their menu.

Eilleen V

The Rio has an awesome selection of shows and events to attend... Movies, musical performances, comedy, burlesque - you name it they got it somewhere. Tickets, snacks and drinks are always reasonably priced and the lineup moves fairly quickly. Seating is plentiful and comfy. The venue is big enough to host some wildly entertaining shows but small enough that it still feels intimate. It may not look like much from the outside but it is a wonderful little gem that I'm proud to have in my community.

David Warren

mostly go for live shows as I can't always watch movies at midnight... drinks and food are good for a theatre, prices are reasonable, good staff generally. staple of east van!

C M

Love that place and love the fact that we can find places that replay good old movies. Very cosy and charming, definitely a place to go from time to time. They offer online tickets to avoid the line up and there is food and drinks at the entrance. Come a little early to find free parking around if you are driving :) They also have shows!! Great venue to do something fun in Vancouver

Johnny Ron

The owner is disgusting, she mis-labeled my pronoun even though I asked her multiple times to not call me that. Will be taking my business elseware. Avoid these fascists at all costs

Laura Leyburn

Everybody loves the Rio! I really wish they had more vegan friendly options, I know a bunch of people would hit up this place for a movie and vegan snacks rather than going out for a dinner or something. Other than that, always try to make an effort to go here as much as possible!

Carol 0

I'm so glad the Rio reopened. I really appreciate the covid distancing and protocols they have in place.

Cecelia Simeon

Does this place have AC????? I've tried calling a bunch of times to ask, but no one ever answers

Greg Dejasco

Awesome local theatre; doesn't usually play 'new' movies but is a community theatre for comedy shows, movie nights, burlesque, and improv. Check out their website to see whats coming up! They also serve alcohol and snacks.

Kayla Frier

Love the people, love the popcorn. The seats are comfy! you can drink beer ad watch your favourite movies. I love this place. And its so easy to get to!!!

Cynthia Solorzano

I love the Rio because going to the movies there is a whole experience.

Miles Maclean

Saw a couple of really good live shows there. (Game of Thrones Live, Rocky Horror Picture Show by the Geekenders). I also had a not so good experience there when I saw The Princess Bride movie as there a guy yelling out the dialogue during the movie. I don't know if that is part of the culture of seeing a movie there but I and a bunch of other people had to tell the guy to shut up. Conclusion: See the live shows. Be aware that someone is more likely to yell in this theatre than others.

Julie Wong

Cozy theatre space to watch a great selection of movies and shows. I love how their pre-movie ads are creatives, they tickle my funny bones. They also have good smelling popcorn because it's real butter, served by friendly staff.

Simon Bergink

this place rules - comfortable seats and good beer

Holly Colbourne

Great theatre! They're always showing different movies and having various stage shows.

Maureen Ferrier

Amazing venue!!!awesome showWalter trout incredible!!!comfy seats lots of leg room happy they saved this venue

Dustin Jones

Movies, shows, whatever else they're showing: the Rio is a great place to go for them. Lots of obscure and unique things to see there, and the popcorn is to die for.

Edurne Bayona

Love their range of different films and events. And you can drink booze inside as well.

Rob Bruynooghe

Always an excellent and eclectic set of cinema and shows. Plus booze, what could go wrong?

dave Maye

I went and saw the most excellent terrible 60's japanese monster movie and had a blast

Anita

Great place for film and live performance. Staff are friendly and helpful.

Ashley Jordison

Amazing show and a neat little venue but we were here in the middle of summer and while they had a few fans on at the front the ones on the roof were not on and it was disgustingly hot with all those people in there. Really cool food options (grilled cheese was to die for) and the blueberry cider was yummy.

Tom Chin

Always keep an eye on what's on at the Rio if you want thoughtful, entertaining fare! Recently caught "Don't Look Up" with De Caprio/ J Lawrence and an impressive array of other stars. Fab commentary/satire of present day social/political/cultural foibles. Staff is always welcoming, and you can't beat adult snacks/beverages at the counter!

Kevin Mitchell

Fantastic locally owned theatre playing mix of offbeat and mainstream movies. Drinks in the theatre! There's a non-alcoholic balcony which is also cool viewing location. Check out the midnight movies. Live events are also lots of fun: Dungeons and Dragons Live! Perfect location near the Skytrain. The only problem is that the lobby is a little cramped especially with the lineups for drinks and food.

Richard Ivity

Always a wonderful experience. Great staff, great movies (did a double header), great conversations

Christopher Winkler

Very grateful this theatre was saved from gentrification. Awesome selection of old and new movies. STAR WARS BURLESQUE SHOW RULES THE UNIVERSE

Shane Lobsinger

I love the screenings of cult movies, community vibes, and delicious local craft brews. So glad it survived the pandemic!

Michael J

Keep it alive! I hope the Rio is around forever... one of the last great cinemas of the past. Honestly, I would be happy if all other theatres shut down and we just had ones like the Rio. They play funky, strange, cult, or very interesting documentaries. Being able to get a beer with your popcorn is... a priceless experience! Stay Classique Rio :D

Sean Werger

Love this theatre so much. From a great selection of new releases, cult, indie, and local films. To local comedy shows like Paul Anthony’s Talent Time. Also you can have a beer while you watch

Jesse Death

I love the Rio. Easily the best independent theatre in the lower mainland. Whether for an indie flick like Mandy, old classics like The Big Lebowski, live shows and podcasts like Kevin Smith, burlesque, D&D, the list goes on and on. This is a Vancouver institution and we're all better off for its existence. I've never had a bad time and really, when you can get beer and drinks while watching Space Jam, how could you?

Kate Sedivy-Haley

Great movie selection, flavoured popcorn, and alcohol if that's your fancy.

Tracy McGuinness

An older building that needs a lot of love....but the seats were comfortable, the sound really good and tha atmosphere amazing.....loved it

George McGoogle

I would give the Rio a 4 star rating for the interesting range of quality movies they show, but the staff are rude, pretentious, and arrogant when dealing with customers. I've experienced this myself and seen others receiving unprofessional or brusque treatment by the Rio staff on several occasions. The management should give the staff some guidelines on how to treat customers with respect- ie. common courtesy- when dealing with them instead of the cold, uncaring and impolite manner currently being used by the staff.

Raff The Reviewer

Love coming here, the experience you get is so much better than Cineplex. They always have a great selection up so I frequently find myself trying out new movies as an excuse to come here. Highly recommended!

Colin

Decent place to see a concert. My gf and I saw a show here and the staff were hilarious. Popcorn/entrance area is really small and makes it hard to line up. I think they show old movies regularly.

Jacob Chimilar

They show movies you don't get to see in theatres anymore with stellar, bright protection and excellent, loud sound. That goes for live performances as well. I saw both Stephen Lynch and Watsky and both were terrific for sound and lighting. There prices are on par with most places and the veggie grilled cheese is delicious.

Quinn Walsh

a very nice building,, good grilled cheese and good all ages venue, nice area, I can't wait to come back soon

Ali M

One of the last standing non night clubs in Vancouver. Classic theatre, you can order alcohol if you like. Watch your favourite movies, social distancing in effect.

Taras Onishchuk

Movie supposed to start at 6:10, we have been staring at black screen for 25 minutes and counting. Very crowded, overbooked seats. Not recommended.

Larry Laws

Always enjoy seeing movies or live acts at this venue. Great vibe!

C Killeen

Such a fun place to go and so many great shows . Could use a little fixing up though .

William Bryce McMurtry

The best movie theatre in the world. Literally, not figuratively. Slushy margaritas, grilled cheeses, awesome movies all the time.

Zachary Fox

My favorite place to see the classic! Doesn't hurt that they serve alcohol, as well ????

Kayla

I love the Rio, it's such a great place!! Great movies, super campy, beer and snacks, what more could you ask for!! ❤❤❤

Jon L

I will agree with many that it does lack in cleanliness in some areas. However it specializes in delivering a wider variety of movies than any other cinema. It's an independent cinema which means it can show whatever it wants whenever. It shows movies from the latest to movies with a cult following to independent fare to special 11:30pm features to even The Room parties. They even have a talent show every first Thursday of the month. So if you like a cinema that's out of the ordinary, the Rio is for you!

Vanessa Vee

Really a gem of Vancouver. A great old theatre with so much charm. Not only can you catch a film here, but you can find comedy shows, burlesque performances, plays, and improv. Nice little concession as well with popcorn, drink, and a good selection of candy. Just an overall cool place with a lot of character.

Jim Forsyth

Grease Sing-a-long was great. Staff were spectacular and worked over and above to ensure a good time was had by all.

David Panton

Good alternative/independent theatre that is currently in the process of raising funds to keep it in private hands and away from developers. Lots of movie marathons, cult movies, etc. Frodo approved!

Meagan Taylor

Dissapointing. Doug Stanhope event didn't have reserved seating so we ended up on the balcony...the barrier was so high I couldn't see the stage...very weird set up...

C George

Definitely attracts a certain crowd... lol. The live show I went to watch in there was great. The venue is cute... but the theatre smells like cat piss.

Samar

Great place to watch classics in vancouver!

Dallas Pautler

What a wonderful movie theater!!! It's one screen, but how many do you need? It's a great place, with amazing staff!!!

Danielle C

Very disappointed in the professionalism of the owner who is telling patrons "Don't be a dolt and get vaccinated" on social media. She was explicitly rude and told me I was the only one who finds this kind of health propaganda offensive. I won't ever be supporting the Rio again.

Lee Mckeown

Just recently attended the Royal Rumble at the Rio "Sports Bar". Had an amazing experience. The covid 19 protocols were perfectly in place and made me feel extremely safe. Thank you Rio Sports Bar for being amazing, as always.

Sylvain

Cool place! Maybe too strict for kids thus since you are restricted to the balcony... But it's probably not their fault since alcohol is served downstairs.

Nicholas Secreto

It's like a beautiful classic movie theatre that you can drink at. They have a full concession at a reasonable price unlike regular movie theatres. I was there was a live show that was spectacular and plan to return to watch a film at a later date.
