REVIEWS OF Princess Theatre (Plaza Entertainment) IN Alberta

Lauren Styles

A beautiful classic Art House theatre in historic Old Strathcona. Princess I, the upstairs theatre, is multi leveled while Princess II, the downstairs theatre, is small and intimate. The best place in Edmonton to watch an indie film.

Yiqiao Kong

This is a beautiful theatre with a lovely retro feel. Ticket prices are reasonable. Cons: since it's quite an old theatre, my seat was broken unfortunately. When I was about 3/4 the way through Jackie (the movie) the reel or something broke (another downside of an older theatre).

Caeli Jollimore

Peter Luu

Melvyn Joseph

Pretty old theatre, good service, good foods. Edit: the first two pictures were taken still, some reason its blurry.

Really cute theatre! Always showing some unique movies and a great spot for a date night! The building is in need of some renovations but it is a neat spot nonetheless! I highly recommend visiting!

Is there in most happening place but somehow I don't see like it because of the ticket price and feel is not a family place because of its ambience

Cozy and cute little theatre that has a real community vibe and plays great movies

Located on a major Avenue, the oldest cinema in the city is truly an art house cinema. It'll give you a retro feel. The acoustic is good. The price of the tickets are affordable. For the first time in my life, I saw a space called 'infant crying room.'

Something about this place needs to change maybe it's the sound? Holding on to the past doesn't mean we can't update the speakers...

ERIC MAHER

cozy theater, cheap admission, good movies

Arianne Smith-Piquette

Popcorn is great, beautiful main theatre with a balcony. The lower location is also great, it seems small but the sound and screen are perfect for that space. Always a great selection of interesting movies. Highly recommend!

This place is such a gem, so nice to step away from the mainstream movie theatres and get the feel of a old time theatre. I find they tend to play movies that aren't your usually Holywood hit and instead have nice indie movies that I never would have thought I would liked so much. I hope the Princess theatre never looses it's charm as I will be back plenty of times

Meglore Manglore

This theatre is a gem, a beautiful historic building. Shows cool movies, a bit of mainstream and a lot of indie movies. The theatres need some work, as they are getting old. The seats are uncomfortable and dingy, but the popcorn is hot and the staff is friendly.

Sean McCaughan

Fabulously heritage theater

The Princess Theatre, on Whyte, is in a nice location. We sat in the upper balcony; okay movie screen, clear and reasonably bright for an old venue. My personal downer was with the slacker staff and the strange games with popcorn refills they play - despite encouraging comments it turns out only the large gets a refill, and in a combo purchase the medium gets a refill too. Manager was indifferent, at best, when discussing popcorn follies. Too many nearby options to suffer mediocrity. Ok?

This is a historic building, with small theaters. Keep that in mind when u visit. It's a step back in time, and if you do some research there are tales of ghost stories associated with the building, (example, the jilted bride who hung herself on the 3rd floor) no surprise, the building is over a century old! Good fun, enjoy your movie experience, great way to spend a afternoon.

Shannon Jones

Easily one of the most pleasant ticket and snack purchasing experiences I've had in a long time. Saw a movie downstairs and the seats we chose were uncomfortable. We moved but...also uncomfortable. Five stars with a comfy seat!

Rita Neyer, PhD

A gem on the map of old Edmonton, the princess theatre features two more or less originally maintained auditoria, a finely curated selection of art house and indie movies pepped with the occasional classic, and what some call the best popcorn you can get for money in this town (they use real butter, I hear). The upstairs auditorium even has an upstairs - totally worth it. Most films are not up for long, so go ahead and catch that late night screening or early afternoon matinee.

This place is beautiful and lovely and a staple of Whyte Ave. But don't go see movies there. The screen is too small, the speakers don't work. We went and saw TENET and walked out because it was INSANELY LOUD and muffled. They were kind enough to give us a refund but the guy at the front desk said he couldn't turn it down. I'm all for supporting local but when local doesn't work, just go to Cineplex. Yes it's a faceless corporation but at least you'll get to actually watch the movie.

Brian Harper

THE Fantastic local Whyte Ave cinima! Very reasonable COVID protocols in place even include fresh popcorn & drinks along with a really great show that wasn't available at the big box movie houses. Great Evening & We'll Be Back.

Beautiful old theatre that offers lots of more unique or smaller films! The balcony is really neat, and it’s great that they’ve managed to keep a lot of the beautiful interior. They also have a small theatre below that shows different movies and despite it being tiny it’s quite comfortable. Great location and always lots of fun!

Great movies in an intimate venue! Staff are kind and helpful. You'll need cash for the concessions downstairs tho!

Villner 1

Looks like one of the oldest screens in Edmonton. There is no proper hygiene nor maintenance. The screen is pretty small and as you can see , there are no air conditioners other than those fans. Ticket prices are too high . For example Mahesh Babu's Sarileru neekevvaru was priced at $26 per ticket. Definitely not a worthy place to watch a film.

Lourdes Zalcik

I love this theatre and the staff. They are great, and the movies are awesome if you like art and not just commercial movies.

What do I love about Princess Theatre the most? Is it the classic movie theatre ambiance from a bygone time? Is it the Romanesque fresco and mouldings in the main theatre? Is the living room feel of the lower theatre? Is it the great admission process?

A sheer nostalgic place for old movie buffs. If you were young in “ Ten Commandment” era, you will not only like the theater, but also value its own aesthetics, antique and heritage value. Sure you will also love “this type”to be here for eternity. I have seen couple of movies, last one being “BAHUBALI” and enjoyed a lot. And rightly as some other reviewer tells, I would have enjoyed more if I were young and had a girlfriend too????????

New to Edmonton and looking for an affordable arthouse cinema? This is it (+ the Garneau Theatre as well of course). Indeed; quality films here. An eclectic offering in an historical venue that has hosted special gatherings, concerts, festivals and rallies. We just saw Harriet a few days ago – great story. The theatre has excellent sound, sharp screen, comfy seats, the staff is friendly and the pop-corn delicious! Take your next movie at the Princess – make it a unique outing with that special person in your life | LCA

Nice little theatre, friendly staff. I've only been upstairs once, all my movies seem to always be in Princess II. Their CheapTicket day are on Mondays. Some people might chafe at the food selection. However, I really like it, it's classic movie theatre chow. They take debit and have Tap. It was slightly jarring during my first visit, with the seat height and where the screen is(both theatres). But it passes in minutes.

Man I struggle with this review, cuz I do love this place. However, the last time I went to the Princess 2 (the downstairs theatre) they had this one gal working on her own taking money for tickets and serving the snacks!! I felt so bad for the gal and by the time we got our snacks the movie was starting and there was still a hecka line behind us. This created quite the large amount of late arrivals and butt shifting, which is never optimal. My other beef was that I chose this snack deal that was like a medium pop, candy and popcorn. I get the popcorn and theyre out of butter I'm like ok no prob, then for the candy she brings out this tub and says you can pick any candy from in there and there's only Snickers and Coffee Crisps... Both of which I'd say are the worst chocolate bars for movie consumption. The pros are that the theatre is lovely and iconic! Even with all the hub bub I was happy to be there. I just wish the staff weren't forced to man two sections because it makes for a not fun time for them and us.

Visited the Downstairs Princess theatre twice recently, and it was much too hot both times. Being downstairs in an 1915 era building, it should cool naturally but the DLP projection equipment may be producing a lot of heat (ventilation required!) As many reviewers have noted the Princess is a historical gem and shows movies that you can't find elsewhere. Unfortunately, in the upstairs theatre my husband and I have found the sound so poor that we catch about 1 word in 5. The final (bldg. up for lease) closure of the Princess is being blamed on Covid-19. We quit going months BEFORE the pandemic because the place smelled musty and the seats were old and uncomfortable. There is only so much "character" that one is willing to pay for.
