This morning we called the Royal Jubilee Hospital after having been transferred by the Victoria General hospital. We were needing to confirm the hospital our Niece was admitted to recently. We were calling from Ontario we were exceptionally impressed with the professionalism of everyone we spoke with and their assistance in answering our questions. The co-operation of this staff certainly brought us comfort when concerned about a loved one admitted to hospital when we are 3000 miles away. Thank you staff at the Victoria General Hospital and the Royal Jubilee Hospital for your kindness and assistance. Happy New Year!

Rob Kennedy

Nobody enjoys going to the hospital but i come from Quebec so i was very impressed by this beautiful clean modern hospital and the great friendly devoted staff, thank you!

Absolutely terrible experience. My grandfather just had emergency surgery, original surgery for two hernias, he ended up having to pulmonary embolizms, which we were not notified by the hospital, we were not notified when he lost a pulse, the nurse accidentally said something when talking to him, and nobody thought to tell us to tell us right away, the nurse just let it slip. Either way, they went against his Do Not Resuscitate order given by the courts, two seperate times in the same surgery....after this happened, he ended up spending one night in the hall way, since they must of not had room or something, he was in the friggen hallway all night. They didn't give him his prescription, so we had to go back and get it. This was a terrible experience for the whole family, especially my grandfather. It's just sad that he wasn't taken care of properly and with some dignity.

My partner was in extreme pain from what one doctor here diagnosed as kidney, bladder infection that went septic and was prescribed pain meds and antibiotics. Two days passed and she was in extreme pain again so we came back to a different doctor who said the first one was completely wrong, he was so focused on my partners prescriptions for her pre existing pain that it felt like he was judging her for being an addict and wouldn’t even give her Tylenol for the pain. We spent 10 hours here for them to say if it gets worse come back later. I’m so frustrated

Was passive aggressively told I shouldn't have brought my dad to the ER and that I should have taken him to the walkin....he was shaking uncontrollably from dehydration and had lost 20lbs.I'm pretty sure walkins and Drs office's are not equipped to set you up to NaCl on bolus with pantoprazole... He needed iv fluids and I'm glad I brought him to emergency and not a walkin. Make sure you advocate for yourself if you have to go here!!!! From someone that also works in the medical field.

I have been there on numerous occasions for myself or my spouse, and have always been treated VERY well. No matter what the reason, the wait times are usually under 4 hours to get in and out. Coming from Ontario and Alberta, this is unheard of, as it normally takes a day. From the front desk at reception, to the cleaning people, nurses and doctors it’s mindblowing how happy everyone is and how incredibly sensitive they are to yours needs. We are truly blessed to have this hospital and the staff that work there. Thank you again for seeing me today with a back injury, and all under 4 hours, hugs... you are appreciated

I broke my hand and the competent ER staff patched me up very quickly at Vic General Thanks to Dr Nick, Crystal and Steven Rob and Wendy

Great staff, friendly, and helpful. 10 out of 10.

Doctors and nurses were great, I'm not a fussy person though so I think they appreciated that. My one major issue was the way I was spoken to on the phone, The woman laughed at me multiple times and hung up. I was beyond shocked at this, your staff on the phones need some etiquette training.

I was rushed in from an allergy to Vic Gen. By the time i woke up the staff in the ICU unit where wonderful and very kind to all their patients. I can't say enough about how great everyone was. Thank you and God Bless all of them. Mary Hardwick

My son had a bellybutton hernia which requires surgery. It took about 1hr. The staff was awesome, I got to suit up & was allowed to go into surgery until he was asleep, then went to wait for him to get back. Dr.Hyashi called up to let me know how it went, & that it was a cist not a hernia. We stayed about 1hr& half to make sure he was awake and able to walk. The whole experience was great. The staff at the Hospital was amazing. I always have a good experience @the Hospital. I've never had rudeness ever. Thanks Dr.Hyashi. This was in August. This is me suited up.????

I’ve heard good things about other departments and I was born at vic gen, but i have yet to have a good experience in the ER. I only go when I’ve had an emergent injury/sickness, but the way the staff has made me feel pathetic and annoying and small is borderline traumatic. I tried to talk to the nurses about it and they brushed me off. I understand their jobs aren’t easy, but showing your ER patients some kindness and respect can go a long way.

Sharon Kamann

The improved ER is very quick and efficient by Canadian standards. Much smoother ride during my last trip

Always friendly and helpful. Super clean and inviting.

I was transported to the VGH Emergency Department via Ambulance after I was the victim of a domestic assault at approx. 03:30-04:00hrs. I had no ID since my purse, cellphone and vehicle were stolen after the assault. Upon arrival at the hospital, the paramedic checked me in and escorted me to the ambulatory waiting area. I sat there wrapped in a sleeping bag, bloody and bruised, with a swollen eye until a nurse asked me into an exam room. Her primary exam of me was VERY brief, and I was asked to leave the room and sit back in the Ambulatory area to await the attending physician. When he became available, I was brought back into the exam room, where he only examined my eye and said he would need to figure out if I would require an x-ray or not, and offered to get the nurse to bring me some Tylenol. I was never x-rayed. I did not see him again during my time at the hospital. The nurse asked me to leave the exam room and wait in the ambulatory area again, After a short while, the nurse then moved me into the IV room. While in the IV room, 2 male patients were placed in the room in the 2 chairs beside me. After a domestic assault, the WORST thing that could’ve been done was to place me in a room with two men, whom I did not know. I waited nearly an hour and a half before I got up to go to the nurse’s desk and requested the Tylenol that the Dr had said the nurse would bring to me. The department was very quiet, and the nurses were busy behind the desk having a jovial conversation. I did not see my nurse, or doctor for the remainder of my time at VGH. It wasn’t until the hospital social worker arrived that I was finally treated with some DIGNITY. She brought me to a vacant private room, where I could talk about what happened, cry and be comforted. She offered me water and a muffin, and allowed me to use her cellphone so that I could finally call my family and tell them where I was. At no point during my time in the ER was my emergency contact ever called and told that I was there. VGH's domestic violence protocol NEEDS to be changed! I've never been so humiliated as I was that night.

I’M a local practising medical doctor that watched my wife go through the emergency room during a pandemic waiting 8 hours keeled over on the ground and no sanitation between patients with the thermometers, blood pressure cuffs, no gloves, no social distancing in the waiting room. It was the worst care I’ve seen in quite some time. Filed complaint with BC health link. Be careful and speak up people. This is your health care system. Demand better from your nurses and doctors.

jason smith

Just moved from AB, wait times there are usually 3 hours plus, got in on boxing day morning with 0 wait and got treated like a human being.

Carys Lougheed

Several nurses very caring however my care was less than satisfactory. After day surgery I was throwing up constantly and had to stay for 2 overnights. Not once did anyone offer me a washcloth or to rinse my mouth. Twice left the table out of my reach and couldn’t reach a bowl to throw up in. Very disappointed

Shame on the male triage staff at Emergency today, Friday May 21, 2021! My granddaughter had to seek medical attention, due to an injury, but the male attendant refused to allow her mom to enter with her. He suggested that at 17 she was old enough to wait on her own. He was rude and condescending as my daughter attempted to explain to him that my granddaughter suffers from several disorders due to traumatic events. My granddaughter called me sobbing because she was alone and afraid. This is unacceptable, even during these trying times. Perhaps a small act of kindness or compassion from this inconsiderate man and his male colleague could have alleviated some of her fears. Once I have the name of this individual I will report his unprofessional conduct.

Stephen DUSTY Roberts

The nurses and doctors were very kind and friendly during my baby boy's MRI

Worst experience I've ever had at a hospital and I haven't even been seen yet. After being brought in by ambulance 6 hours ago, I've sat in the waiting room for 6 hours now. A man also waiting, after 5 hours for the results of his CT scan just had a seizure. I've asked several times for a blanket. Nothing. Have repeatedly explained my medical history and they do not seem to care that I'm having difficulties breathing or am in pain.

Lisa Marini

I recently attended the VGH ER and subsequently spent 7 nights in care with a debilitating condition. This was my first hospital stay in 65 years and was a memorable and very worthwhile experience. Both in ER and in the Acute ward, the testing, diagnostics and treatment was outstanding. In particular I would like to thank Doctor Crisci , her colleagues and the round the clock nursing staff for their professionalism and amazing care and attention. I cannot speak too highly of their skills and effort. James Quinn Sooke

After 47 yrs of not requiring overnight hospital care, I spent 2 days on the Women's Surgical ward. Absolutely phenomenal care! Thanks Natasha, Shelby, & Penny!

Mathieu Powell

Nothing but competence and compassion every time I have had the misfortune of needing the hospital. Both the ER staff and other wards have been so good to my loved ones, I am always impressed and thankful.

This remains the best hospital with the best care. Everything is designed to work effectively from the parking to the gift shop. Great hospital signage, so it is easy to find your way. The atmosphere is bright, open to the outdoors, and uplifting.

Jason V.

Great staff in the ER took great care of our 1.5 year old.

Rita May Webster

First time having surgery and it could’ve gone better. From the time I checked in until check out it was such a fantastic first experience. I was nervous and wasn’t sure what to expect and I cannot believe how nice everyone was. All the nurses and surgical staff are just phenomenal!!! Thank you! Such a great hospital with amazing people inside.

I have been here waiting for 4 hours now,...the beverage machines are annoying it’s too loudE I’m start having a headache from waiting this long, poor management really. Even if the nurse call my name I believe I’m gonna wait more inside before I see a doctor. The worst experience ever

I don't review places often at all but i figured I can't be the only one that's has such a horrible experience. I've gone to the emergency room in Vic gen twice and both times I was met with absolute unproffesionalism. And Actually laughed at! The person that drove me to the hospital on my last visit was in awe of how horrible they treated me. And i can say with my condition. There's nothing I can do but go to the hospital and ask for help and I would rather never go back. When I walked in and told them my condition and asked about the treatment I knew I needed I was told doc Google doesn't work here And to sit down and wait. At that point . I had said I'll just go home as it was causing more pain to be in the waiting room the nurse again laughed and said either way ur being billed whether. U stay or go. What gets to me Is their attitude.. I am the last person to go to a hospital but if im scared of a seizure or self harm it's not a question of needing help and what I got was completely the opposite. I felt what I told them went in one ear and out the other. I ended up leaving after three hours without seeing a doctor because bare minimum needs were not met. I left that hospital knowing self harm was a possibility without treatment. And .IM still getting a bill in the mail for the visit. So a search for a specialist is my only option as. I will never step foot in that hospital again. Not to mention diagnosis for patients is talked about in common areas in a negative manner . And. Personal discussions were more important then doing their job. I sat there for an hour listening to nurses talk about their personal lives after getting up to ask a question. I was ignored until they finished their conversation and I immediately left after that.

Sorry to hear of the infant who was badly burned by a nurse in order to get a blood sugar level. So cruel

An unexpected 4 day stay, my first hospital stay in 30 years, and I was absolutely overwhelmed by the kindness, compassion, caring and concern of the staff. From the porters to the doctors, the CT tech to the Lab tech, and that backbone of any hospital, the nursing team, there wasn't a single weak link. This group of health care professionals made a stressful, frightening experience a whole lot easier. Thank you!

Sherron R

It's ok nice nurses. Lazy though don't expect to heat your leftover takeout late at night that was shot right down by 2 of them I'm staying on the 6th floor it's been a nice stay so far

Abhorrent emergency care, staff indifferent. Did not receive care for chief complaint (other then triage pulse oximeter, blood pressure and the bracelet). Hours go by, now I’m having a sugar low with type 1 diabetes at home after WAITING FOR NOTHING at the hospital. Also told not to get a quick meal on initial check in despite mentioning I have type 1. Asked what my follow up plan is upon leaving.. right..

Alise Brown

Amazing hospital. I took my son when he was very ill and the care was outstanding. We were in the ER and received prompt attention. We did come back the following day because we were still worried. That visit we waited about 2 hours to see a doctor. We did not enjoy the wait, but it was reassuring to know that the triage system works. When it was an emergency, we went in right away. When it was not an emergency, we had to wait. We of course thought it was an emergency each time we went, but we had well placed faith in the staff. The staff prioritized the real emergency and ensured that we received appropriate care based upon the seriousness of my son's condition.

Merin Pearce

found all staff excellent , friendly and informative ( unusual in an emergency department ) referred me to a specialist immediately

Haha. I work here

Robyn Duffy-Toner

We took my son to the emergency room as he was struggling to breathe from such a bad cough (which turned out to be croup). The emergency doctor and nurses took such good care of him. He spent a night in the ICU and one night on peds and everyone we met along the way was absolutely amazing. The nurses and doctors were so diligent and delivered such good care. We moved to Victoria after losing a child and deciding we wanted to raise our son where there is a good hospital. This experience solidified that the decision was the right one. The care we experienced is unlike anywhere we have ever been. Thank-you from the bottom of my heart!

All the nurses and staff are excellent. They made stay at the hospital very comfortable. I thank them all very much.

I left after 4 hours (not busy at all) with an untreated bladder infection. Rude nurses, inept at triage and time management. Walk-in clinic tomorrow, thanks for nothing.

Kind Staff

Anita Barany

Always under staffed. People brag about Canada's free health care. Yeah, wait 8+ hours in the waiting room only to be taken into another room to wait some more. Free health care is a joke. I'd rather pay hundreds of dollars to see a doctor within 2 hours than rot away in some waiting room for half a day. Vic Gen has always been problematic, it's not really the doctors fault, the hospital is old and dated and needs to be torn down and rebuilt so it can be ran properly. I've seen high school CPR classes ran better.

Wallace Santos

my son was born here recently. the mother/babe unit nurses wouldn't give me the time of day then he was put into the nicu for erratic heartbeat. only 30 percent of the nurses we're actually helpful and cared about there jobs. the doctors wouldn't make a decision and kept passing it on to the next doctor. NO ONE WOULD TELL ME WHAT WAS GOING ON WITH MY GOD DAMN SON. SHUT THIS HOSPITAL DOWN!!!!!

This is an absolutely amazing hospital. The team in OR is mindblowing. They are compassionate and extremely patient. They explained everything, including risks, very thoroughly. I was brought into surgery as fast as I could, considering I was Septic, and they began operating immediately. All of the aftercare nurses were gentle and caring, and very empathetic. My experience here was sad because of the personal circumstances, but the team made me feel so loved and welcome from the minute I arrived.

Jannel Chantel

Nobody knows what is going on in this place. The patients have no feedback and the nurses and doctors are not coordinated. Appointments are not obeyed either. Even if you get an appointment you still have to wait for hours or days to be seen. I have been there many times with family and friends. Its bad...

Caitlin Elliott

I have small deep-set veins that most nurses can't find a proper IV site and require a specialist to come and insert one. I had to experience getting stabbed painfully and incorrectly ELEVEN TIMES by SEVEN different nurses before they decided to call an IV specialist who was able to insert the IV, painlessly and effortlessly, in one try. Horrible and incredibly painful way to be treated. I even told them only an IV specialist was able to insert an IV correctly, as my veins are difficult for a regular nurse to work with. I do not appreciate nurses using me as a pin cushion and making me go through this trauma so that they can brag how they were the one to finally insert an IV into the patient with hard to find veins. If you're reaching to put an IV in the thumb, call the damn specialist first.

Jillian Robertson

After a very serious accident on gender Island on Wednesday, July 27 I received extraordinary care from Dr. Elizabeth, Thompson, Physician and Vicki Livingston, Nurse in the General hospital and Jennifer (Sorry I do not remember last name), Emergency Nurse and Krystal, the PT. I will always be grateful for the professional care, courtesy and attention they provided. Their concern for my wellbeing was overwhelming and heart felt. Me and my entire family are thankful that these individuals were on duty when my severely bruises body arrived looking for help. Thanks from all my heart. Ken

I came in because I fell 10 feet of scaffolding at work I have been here for 4 hours now and I'm waiting for a CT scan on my ankle I can't walk or move but I have just been moved into the hallway well laying here on bed naked with nothing but a couple blankets and no food the staff won't even help me to the bathroom I asked about an hour a go I have been visiting by a couple doctors who have looked at my ankle but nun of them could have been bothered to put the blanket back over my foot it seems like a small the but when not wereing anything and no privacy you don't exactly want to move to cover your own foot the staff when I got here where exalent but the night staff are totally disconnected from the people the take care of and it's discussting with how they treat people no dignity.

kylee moul

Unfriendly staff and EVERY TIME I go they get whats going on wrong. For example: One time I went because of a hypoglycemic episode (later diagnosed at R.J.). The doctor didn't listen to a word I said, told me i was "just sick" and prescribed me random pills to take for 2 weeks. I didn't take them and went to R.J right away where I got my diagnosis for hypoglycemia.

Dan Pendergast

Janine Hunka

The nurses in the post surgery recovery area were excellent. They tried to suppress my pain with several medications and used an ice pack to determine when I could be sent to the ward. My only disappointment was when it was time to leave the ward, the nurses could not find a wheel chair because they are not kept on the wards. Consequently, a nurse helped me walk to admitting where my wife took me home.

Jessamine Thornbury

I had day surgery a couple of weeks ago and couldn't have asked for a better experience. The staff were so kind and understanding. I was really really nervous and the nurse took extra time to come and sit with me and answer my questions and calm me down and I can't imagine what it would have been like if she hadn't done that. The porter who brought me into the OR was cheerful and anesthetist was very understanding of my anxiety and get me something right away to help calm me down. When I came round there was a nurse there with water and she stayed with me the whole time. I was very very pleasantly surprised at how easy the whole experience was and would like to say a big thank you to everyone who contributed to it!

This is a great place. The Drs& staff treated me very fantastic , they we're fast & thorough.

Carol Baldwin

The worst hospital in Canada. If you plan on having a baby here think twice! Have had our baby’s born here twice now. Every time is more of a gong show. Full shared rooms so mother and baby can’t get rest. Zero staff so you don’t get attention when you need it. Specially if you have had a cesarean and can’t get out of bed. I just don’t understand how it can be so bad!

Sam Biletnikoff

Best best hospital in Victoria General Hospital everyone welcome over there is Best staff

I would like to give 0 stars ,tonight my grandson just 22 months old was sent home dehydrated and they were told there's nothing the hospital can do for him ...REALLY !!! Nov 12th, my father was admitted for a severe stroke. I flew home that night and went directly to the hospital. Although it was way past visiting hours, I was greeted with kindness and immediately updated on dad's condition. Unfortunately the news was not good and given his age, the only thing that could be done was to keep him comfortable. The staff arranged for a place for mom so she can stay the night with dad. The next day, he was moved to a private room to give us privacy to say our goodbyes. Despite the nurse & doctor shortages (which is not their fault), everyone was very compassionate, caring and took the time to explain to us exactly what to expect. He passed away on the 14th and again, the staff reached out to us to insure that we were supported in our grief. I've always had positive experiences at this hospital and I am very grateful to everyone. U

My teenage son was bleeding from a larger glass cut on his foot, including the tendon. They took 3.5 hours to get him in, did a 'baste' of a stitch job and sent us home! The surgeon or hospital never called to get him back for surgery and now his second toe has no use! When I called them to see what happened they said they lost his number and hung up on me!!

If I could do less then one star I would. I took my friend in because she was puking blood and passing out. As I step in the front doors I meet by a room full of people in pian, I walked upfront to explain to someone what was going on With my friend. And I got told to sit down and shut up and wait for my turn. So I sit down with my friend and we wait for about an hour. She's pukomg and passing out And this whole hour I watched three nurses behind the counter sit and chat while I watch other people emergency Freaking out. When I approach the ladies behind the desk they said they were not nurses but yet they were wearing nursing gear and they were working at receptionist desk in the emergency room. I asked if she could call me an ambulance for my friend so I could take it to a better hospital. She told me I can do that myself . In a very rude way, so I calmly repeated my self asking for an abulance. Keep in mind I watched her order one for another girl upon request. I asked are you serious? She called security on me. So I calmly explained to them the situation and they agreed with me and understood the severity of my situation. I thought things would work out fine. Until I looked on of the nurses who I originally came up to. They were both laughing at me at my friend and At our situation. Once again this lady said she wasn't nurse but she was sitting in the nurses table wearing nursing scrubs with a nursing name tag and then goes on to Yell it at me saying she's not a nurse and then I'm overreacting because my friend is freaking out. My friend Has been puking all night she was passing out and all these ladies would do was laugh and sneaker whenever I was trying to say anything I wasn't causing a scene I just need help. And in the blonde so callled "nurse" was just laughing at me the who time. I'm the end my friend and I Went to a different hospital. I have a meeting with all my laywer and I will be taking legal actions against these nurses, how I was treated and how my friend was treated was not fair.

I went to the emergency room because I had a bad reaction with my heart medication and had a very high and abnormal heart rate when I was checked in. The ladies that got my information were nothing but rude and disregarded when I was trying to tell them about the medication I was on and didn't take the fact that I had very bad anxiety seriously. after waiting an hour to see a doctor with a heart rate of 150 bbm+ I started puking and did so for the rest of the night and still nobody was there to help/see me. After four excruciating hours and puking up six buckets I was still not helped, very disappointed with the lack of care and long wait times.

Twelve days ago, I thought something was wrong with my eye so I had a friend drive me to VGH. Dr Jones treated me and set me up an appointment with an eye specialist. The specialist sent me for a 4:00 appointment with a retina specialist and the next day I had lazar surgery. Had it not been for the referral to the eye specialist, my retina would have probably detached and I could have lost some sight in the eye. There is an incredible amount of professionalism at VGH and I can't thank you enough.

NO PRIVACY Went to the emerg. One person has scoliosis, another a head injury, another had high blood pressure, another had a tendon injury. I know this because the doctor was giving his diagnosis in emerg. in the waiting room front of everyone. Why wouldn't this be in private. REALLY!

Didn't die. Would go again

if u are a 2nd class person,A.K.A., a drug user, u will be treated allmost humanely, with nurses that try not to spit in your face for having the gall to ask for decent medical treatment ..u need to go to r.j.h. to be spit on.

My sister went into hospital Mon for a procedure, with an overture stay. Today is Wed she has not had the procedure, and so far the food she has received was last night food services brought her tea and milk for dinner. She was allowed a meal as knew procedure wasn't happening. My cousin took her dinner Monday and I took her dinner last night, This morning when no breakfast came and aid found her some yougurt. The people one on one are great, but the system sucks. Still no Eta for procedure. I'd make this no stars if I could figure out how! What do people with no family do!

The Victoria General Hospital is a very clean place. All of the nurses and doctors are very friendly, professional and helpful. Never had any problem.

Been yelled at by a nurse for tying my gown up the "wrong way". Was kept in a safe room with a unopenable door for about 8 hours not allowed to see my mother. Someone else's blood was on the wall and when I alerted the staff nothing was done, no one came to clean it and no one switched my room for me. Had the same nurse during another visit talk very loudly while I was being triaged, he spoke so everyone in the waiting room could hear my embarrassing symptoms. When I was speaking with a mental health counsellor I opened up about some stuff and all he said was "you know that's a felony right" and offered 0 help at all. Went in with a sprained ankle once, bruising the size of 2 baseballs and couldn't even put a shoe on, just wanted an xray to make sure it wasn't broken, and the doctor didn't even look at my ankle just the xray, she squeezed my calf for some reason, never touched my ankle, and told me I'd be fine in a couple days, refused to give me a note for work. Saw a doctor at a walk in the day after who actually looked at my ankle, he told me it would take months to heal and that I'd need physio. I've spent probably 2-3 months inpatient over the years at vgh and I cant think of a single good experience at this hospital.

Terrible and traumatic experience. It was Feb 12, 2017. Around 10AM, I guess. I lost my 10 month old little baby girl at the time. My baby was surrounded with doctors and nurses at General Hospital Emergency Room. When I realized that my baby couldn't come back in my arms, I was sobbing and mourning with my wife at the corner of the room which was assigned for my family. All of a sudden, an old lady staff rushed into the room, and she saw us tortured(there was obvious eye-contact between us). But she didn't stop talking and laughing loudly several minutes, and left. As an immigrant, I still wonder how such a thing would've happened in the hospital. I don't want to believe that 'joking around and being excited before someone else's death' is Canadian culture, or the hospital staff was kind of inconsiderate? I will never forget that face of the staff till the end of my life...

Kody Rankin

I was in 7A, the Asian lady in front of me had her daughter visited and the white lady beside me both had 2 visitors (husband and daughter) yet when I asked the staff why were visitors allowed I was not given an answer and my husband was not allowed to visit. Maybe I need to change my skin colour from Black to White. What about the Covid safety precautions that was supposed to be in place to protect the patients? Shouldn't the policy apply for everyone?

I don't often review a hospital, but I had to comment about the excellent, dedicated staff at GVH. They do their best to ensure patients and their families are well prepared and involved with any difficult surgery.

Great staff in the daycare Part The ladies were really nice to me and when I was getting my 2nd Covid shot I got to play a VR but there needs to be a sign at the front of the parking lot saying free parking because me and my dad walked to our van three times in the pouring rain lol

Today I came here with my boyfriend. We have been here now for about six hours just waiting. Now I get it that kids and elderly people should go first. But why is it when I ask how long the nurse has to snap at me and say “ for non emergency it’s 4-5 hours”. Hello that’s not what I asked I just wanted to know when we would be next. But before that I had to stand and wait 10 mins to ask while the two others talked about what they are doing on the weekend. Now if you ask me your getting payed for your job. Isn’t your job helping the sick. Not to socialize and snap at people. Where I come from if you did that at work you would be reprimanded. Why is this allowed for people in the healthcare system to be rude and ignorant to people

Sita

The staff obviously can't read. Giving someone who's lactose intolerant regular milk and ice cream

You're Staff in the Women's surgical ward are the loveliest people. They're incredibly empathetic, patient, kind, so hardworking. I've never met hospital staff in my life who appear to genuinely love what they do so much. Sophie, Andrea, Ana, Penny, Lori, Vicky, Emma, Shelby... just to name a few! Thank you so much for taking such great care of me and the other patients under your wings...you are all amazing ❤️

Meant to post this way sooner, anywho I came to the ER here about a year ago and man, I cannot express how grateful and impressed I was with the quality of the staff in the unit I stayed in. The ward itself is HUGE and has pretty much anything you'd ever need. All the doctors were very friendly and helped me tons. Only small complaint was the ER wait time, there happened to be a lot of people there that day and they were a bit short on staff. Oh I was also born here without any issues at all, :)

Kemal Evans

The Labour and Delivery floor needs to be recognized for the amazing work they do for the mothers to calm them and make them feel comfortable , my wife delivered our daughter by c section today and we had a bunch of curveballs and they really calmed me through the situation and made me focus on my wife which made the process so much easier , I just want to say thank you for all your help and all the workers on that floor need to be noticed for the amazing work they do !!!

Raj walia

Staff was friendly and the wait wasn't long. my only complaint is that the parking lot is confusing.

Trevor Summerfield

I was admitted via the trauma unit a few weeks back and spent 7 days in their care. The staff were the most loving, caring people I have ever experienced and the speed, agility and seamlessness in which they worked during my trauma admittance was unbelievable.

Maureen Uddenberg

Great place just came back saw Dr Liddle, and Jenn, in ultra sound, these folks do really good work.

Thomas Binsl

We got to know this place to well, in our cases the nurses, and surgeons were fantastic, they were so attentive and showed real sincere empathy when dealing with us, they work very hard in tight quarters and still manage to smile and actually care. Thanks to all the fantastic people at Victoria General, your awesome!

Calvin Chhor

I was treated with a lack of respect and zero empathy. I am from Vancouver.I have experienced emergency departments and allows found the staff to be kind and respectful. The fact the er was busy does not give a right to treat patients with disdain and unkindness. I left after 4 hour wait.

Worst hospital ever. My half body was not able to move. The doctor was not able to talk or treat me at all. The nurse keep giving me pain killer other than that nothing at all. When I told the nurse I was my condition getting worse that just told me to feel free to go to other hospital. I do not know what to say at my worst day other feeling unhelpful. Remember do not let ambulances take you to general hospital. It will get your worse.

Just wanted to thank all of the wonderful Nurse's and Physicians and support staff at Victoria General Hospital. I've really gotta hand it to the staff here. This is by far the best hospital I've had the misfortune of visiting. Despite a rather busy waiting room, they immediately identified my problem before I even sat and had me on the cutting table less than 12 hours later. I will never go to any other hospital on this island again.

I was here for a pretty badly cut finger (stupid sharp new knife...) and when I arrived I waited in line, saw the triage nurse, and then took a seat. Yes, I was there for about three hours. But my finger was bleeding only a little and I wasn't going to die by any means. I understand that I must wait my turn, so I stuck around. I saw a great doctor who stitched up my finger, gave me some great advice and information on what to expect for healing, and then I was sent on my way. My overall experience with all the staff here was overwhelmingly positive. Just be prepared to wait unless it's a bona fide medical emergency (e.g. heart attack, stroke, or other life threatening emergency). That's the reality of the system we live in and is not the fault of the staff who do their best.

Ashley Barry

On Sunday there was a woman in the Victoria General Hospital waiting room who was clearly sick - coughing and sniffling, who keeps taking her mask off to talk on the phone, cough and wiping her snot with her hand and touching the chairs . Way beyond COVID at this point. Where exactly is the medical personnel and COVID protocols. This person should have been isolated from everyone else but instead she's left there putting everyone at risk. As it turned out the woman tested positive for COVID. I fully concur with the Physician who left a recent review on here about VGH ER and what a total disgrace it is.

I want to Thank the Staff for treating me so well, I went in with what I'd thought was a heart issue thank goodness it wasn't.... From the time I walked in until the time I'd left, I was treated so well, which in turn helped me calm myself while waiting for test results....thank you all????????

Since the odds are pretty high I will die someday in this hospital, I better say something nice about it! Both kids born here. Couple broken bones and some surgeries.... We always choose VGH

They found my broken ribs, but they almost didn't find them. The staff have told me twice on 2 occasions that there's 'no permanent side effects associated with any psychiatric medications' anyone with a cell phone can bust that myth by going to invega sustenna's corporate website and locating "diabetes" in the list... They're mythos

After spending weeks bed ridden, I finally made the trip to Vic general. The doctors and nurses were so incredibly kind and helpful. They did everything they could to help me and admitted me immediately. I cannot say enough good things about these people and wish there was something I could do to return the favour. If any of you are reading this THANK YOU so much from myself and my family for the prompt care and attention you provided for me. ❤️

No one is ever happy to be in hospital but my room, clothing and bedding was always clean and the nursing staff were friendly, attentive, patient, gentle and very prompt (a few in particular really got me through this!). The doctor I saw daily was busy but thorough and had a great bedside manner. All of the care aides, porters, housekeepers, kitchen staff...etc...etc were so cheerful and hardworking and helped me maintain my dignity and feel safe and well cared for. I see how organized and proficient everyone has to be and I really appreciate them helping me through such a painful and uncertain time. Thank you to VGH for all that you do!

The Squeaky Wheel Gets the Abuse, Hostile Environment. UPDATE: Took it up with the Patient Care Quality Office. They called me back and said a manager would get back to me within 5 days. It has been over 2 week and no call. They say they care about patients. This is just the spin. They couldn't care less!!!! After a half hour of her being ignored I am very concerned and go to the desk. Everyone’s body language is “don’t bother me” Through all of what I am about to write I am polite, speak with a low voice, begin every statement with “please” and end with “thank you’. I explain to the staff member that I am concerned about My wife as she could be having a heart attack and I learned in CPR that the heart will die if not attended to immediately. I explain I am worried. They say she had an EKG and if it were urgent she would have been seen and she is “in the cue”. I ask My wife if she had an EKG and she said no. I am still very concerned, so I go back to triage and ask if I can speak to someone else as I am worried this may be a life, death situation as indicated by the paramedic and the doctor consult. She sends in the head nurse. She takes me aside in a private area and asks me what my concern is. I try to explain my concern, but she interrupts me a lot and tells me that they will do an EKG. I wanted to explain to her that I am in no hurry as long as My wife’s condition is not life threatening. Just tell me she is fine, and we will wait patiently to see a Doctor. After another very long period of time she gets the EKG. I ask the person doing the test about the result and she says she can’t tell us and that someone will get back to us. I go again to the front desk and some tells me if it were urgent they would have dealt with it. After over 2 hours in this shopping cart wheelchair, my wife asks to be somewhere more comfortable. It seemed cruel to leave her like this. I then ask if she can get some Gravol, so we can just go home where she can be comfortable. The staff member says that is not a good idea and we should wait to see a doctor. By now it’s about 3 hours. I ask if she can lie down somewhere and the staff moves her to a recliner. This makes her feel better. My wife throws up. I go to the desk holding the bag and ask what to do with it. A staff member takes it. After some time, my wife asks for another Gravol as she threw up the first one. I ask the staff member for another and he says he is not My wife’s assigned nurse. My wife is still very sick and no Gravol. I ask the nurse again and she says she didn’t know My wife needed one. I told her I asked for one a ½ hour before. She (Natalie) then lost it and yelled at me telling me I have been rude and condescending. I kept my voice down in spite of being yelled at and told her that I had not once been rude or condescending but rather was concerned about My wife’s health. I told her that patients are not the enemy. She turned her back on me. When the doctor did come (after over 3 hours), I brought this to his attention and he said not to distract him with this. At one point I mentioned we waited over 3 hours to Natalie and she said “that the wait time” as though this is acceptable. After the doctor had completed the assessment on My wife, I read him the following quote from the hospital website: “Quality health care is important to all of us at Island Health. Your feedback will further improve the quality of the health care system. If you have a compliment or a complaint, please first speak with the person who provided the service, or to the manager of the area. Complaints are best addressed and resolved at the time and place they occur. If your complaint remains unresolved after discussing the issue with the service area, we encourage you to contact our Patient Care Quality Office. “ I asked him if I should take this up with him or someone else. He said to take it up with the Patient Care Quality Office.

My experience with ER staff was extremely positive. Came in with severe head pain and did not wait long at all. Nurses were friendly and helpful and Dr. Jones was excellent. Thanks to everyone at the VGH emergency

This is the only emergency room I have been to that are based on an honor system, sit in the red chair and try figuring out if you are the next(and there is not enough red chairs). Because when you are sick, you are suppose to keep track who come before you and who come after you! I would have given no star if there is an option, with all the tax dollar going to the medical system, you figure that the patient do not need to do the hospital's job! Seriously, VGH, how about spend a few hundred dollar or less and get a number system!

We have yet to attend this hospital and be seen in under 4 hours. The average wait time is about 6 hours and our last visit was 9 hours. Our infants finger was crushed and he needs to see a plastic surgeon and have x-rays. We know this because knowing how poor the attendance is at Jubilee, we went to a walk in clinic first where the doctor wrote up a requisition. When we arrived at Jubilee the lineup today on a Sunday at 1:30 pm is out the door. This is bloody ridiculous considering how much we are charged for MSP in BC. Where the heck is all our money going?? We had better medical service in Mexico.

Mary Hardwick

Just got to say the staff at VGH's ortho clinic were amazing and the process was terrific! This is the second time in two months I have visited. Professional fun, totally thorough and fast ynder time service - totally inpressed! Was escorted by to ensure xray was good and checkin lady was so great. It took less than an hour to checkin, remove cast, xray and receive consult. Thank you ortho clinic - u r the best!

I think everyone was doing their best, under tough circumstances. All the staff were very reassuring. And cleaning was happening constantly.

RN stuck at desk with LPN'a doing the work. As s result I was sent home without a knock brace after cervical spine surgery. Twice my meals were missed, one right after surgery. This was my dinner and the nurse shrugged, too bad. Then spilt my ginger ale and told me I needed to go to the machines on the first floor, I hadn't even been out of bed yet. Fasting, surgery, and missing dinner I went 48 without food. Over my three night stay two other patients missed meals. Services cut too reap and nurses run to tight without enough RN's to watch over LPN's.

June 8th 2020 Having fallen face down the boat ramp at Pier One Victoria where we moor our SV Nearchus, fellow boaters called an ambulance that took me to the General Hospital Emergency. I must thank the Emergency staff that transferred me to ward N604 under the great care of Dr Theo Jankowski and his wonderful female Doctor Partner, sorry don’t remember her name!! and their decision to correct all my problems and all the wonderful nursing staff. Thank you Surgeon Allan H Hayashi for great Endoscopic Surgery removing my Gall Bladder. Thank you all!! Bernard Graham Barnard.

Construction going on the road when trying to enter VGH from around back the entire turn off lane into hospital has been corned off with cones forcing everyone including Ambulances to go all the way around. Way to put people's personal well being at risk all for make work project. This was going during the evening the other night but during the day today. Construction workers seem to think they have ownership of the road as they become extremely abusive with profanity and homophobic slurs.

Very, very pleasantly surprised - great hospital with excellent staff. Highly recommended!

It can be hard to find a doctor there who takes female pain seriously. I will no longer visit this facility if I have issues in the future because the last time I was there, my extreme muscular pain was treated with child sized dose Ativan (a drug for anxiety and depression).

Warren Campbell

My concerns are not for myself. My treatment was probably average but that average comes with amazing highs (a few incredible nurses who really demonstrate empathy and compassionate care including good thorough information sharing with the patient) but also some shocking lows. It’s the lows that are shocking. I was placed on a ward with 3 other people all with ortho injury accidents. I’m the youngest in the group by 35 years in some cases. I also am blessed with a sense of self advocacy as well as have a support network to assist me with that seeing as I was laid up and on some pretty intense pain killers. The folks around me were often disoriented and unaware of what was happening to them. Some of the nursing staff seemed to not want to rely on chart history for what was happening with them and instead thought they could get the whole picture from a 90 year old one day out of hip replacement, on a steady stream of opioid painkillers who’s had a rough night with not enough rest (because when you put us all in the same sardine can, guess what? You get woken up constantly). I watched some nurses and HCAsmake heroic strides to give the patient excellent info, patiently interact with them as they felt disoriented and work toward their rehab ( which is of primary importance for osteo injuries, which I know because I also had a hip replacement 6 months ago). Other nurses and HCAs looked at these folks as problems. Choosing to warehouse them. Taking the easiest route possible for their care. I understand the dynamics of short handed, and that there are a LOT of working parts I’m not privy to which affect day to day for care givers. But when the few rockstars seem to be able to get everything done and provide excellent care, it gives me pause. I hope the system can change and I hope that my fellow room mates make it out and feel better. As for me, my helper advocate assisted me in getting everything I needed through persistence and helping me speak up for my care. I’m outta here.

Sage Bennett

The care provided to my wife/child during her pregnancy, labor and after birth was just phenomenal. I cannot stress how friendly and professional the entire staff is.

Kate Longpre

I attended Victoria General Hospital after slicing my finger with a utility blade which I knew required stitches. The admitting nurses were great and changed my bandage right away before the 3 hour wait to be seen by a doctor. The doctor (she told me to call her Kayla) who gave me stitches did NOT give me enough freezing as I could feel EVERY stitch being sewn through my skin. She had told me to let her know if it hurt too much and she would stop and give me more freezing. The needle for the freezing had hurt so much as she dug the needle in so deep and hard that I was afraid to ask for more freezing. She also proceeded to tighten each stitch extremely tight by yanking on the thread 3-4 times very hard. While enduring this pain I was deep breathing and sighing, she asked me if I was tired!!!??? NO...I was afraid of more pain. She had told me she would stop if it hurt too much but did not seem to care when I told her how much it hurt. I was not treated like a human being with feelings, there was zero empathy for the pain she was inflicting. Saying sorry is not enough. She also forgot to give me a Tetanus shot, and I had to remind her. She said she thought they had already done that....well NO they hadn’t. She said she would get the nurse to give me the shot when she came in to clean up. The second nurse who saw me to clean up the stitches and blood was very professional and was shocked when I told her how much the stitches had hurt even with freezing. She gave me a Tetanus shot on my shoulder which I did not even feel!! I was so thankful that I did not have to endure any more pain!! For the second nurse I would give a 5 star rating. The first nurse (Kayla) should never be allowed to give stitches to any human being.

After a short wait in line there was a doctor to greet me at the door in emergency, I had cut my finger badly on glass and she dressed my wound right away. Once I was registered I waited outside in their outdoor waiting room. The estimated time to wait was 4-5 hrs, and I got in at hour 6. They were quite busy! Overall a good experience, despite the circumstances. I'm thankful we have doctor's here who are so diligent in their jobs ???????? keep doing the great work you're doing ????

A BIG THANK YOU to all the individuals who ensured my surgery was successful on November 4th to the caring nursing staff who ensured my recovery was successful from November 4th to 7th. Dr. K Mills/ Gynecologist, Dr. Ross/General Surgeon, Barb RN night staff on 7 South and RN student Elizabeth from Camosen College. The caring, professional attitudes of these individuals gave me a high level of comfort and a low level of stress which ensured a successful discharge on November 7th.

Came in with a crush injury. It wasn't too serious but they didn't have a lot of people so I was triaged quote fast. While they did do an x-ray in a timely manner, after that it kind of went downhill. Saw a lot of nurses on their phones. Even listened to one take 10 minutes to order a pumpkin spice latte on her phone from starbucks. In the end they basically we're like "it's not broken so you can be discharged". They didn't even clean it or bandage it, I was told I could wash it off in the sink... I left without it being cleaned to even assess it and it was leaking fluid down my hand. Anyways, nice doctor but just really poor follow through and no discharge information and would really to that cleaning a wound is a bit more pressing then ordering a latte. At the very least do it somewhere privately :-/

I recently had a stay with neurosciences at Vic Gen. I have to state here and now that I have never been better cared for in any other hospital in the Province of BC. Not only was the neurosciences department highly efficient and caring, but all other services I may have had a request with, were also just as caring. If you have to be anywhere in Victoria for medical care, request Vic Gen!

Terrible. 1 star. Nurses here should in Vancouver.

After transferring to the hospital while suffering a tonsil bleed, I spent 4 hours in the waiting room after spending 4 hours in the last hospitals waiting room. The bleed was far enough back in the throat that the first doctor I saw said she couldn't help me and I needed to transfer to Vic gen. Long story short, was given the wrong extremely high acid diet with a wound in the back of my throat, the nurses didn't check my throat for 7 hours straight, saying I would tell them if I was bleeding even though it was far enough back I couldn't taste it. Was dismissed repeatedly whenever I had pain or concerns, told later "Oh, that wasn't updated on your chart, oops." Last nail in the coffin was that the nurses told the doctor I was fine and hadn't had a bleed even after not looking for nearly the entire day and said I could leave at any time... Only redeeming factor the whole time was that their lab tech who was taking blood on the night shift was an amazing human being with a super great attitude. Everything else made me hope for the day we review our healthcare system.

Horrible experience, took my boyfriend to the ER very bad staff when they put us in the waiting room, first they did not tell us what they kept injecting into him, he had the stomach flu and needed to use the washroom and a nurse told us "is he using that washroom? Great now you have to tell someone to clean it cause now it's contaminated!" Like where is he suppose to go when he has diarrhea. After waiting 3 hours in the ER waiting room I got up and asked politely to a lady how long will the wait be and she yelled at me rudely "there is 1 doctor! He has to treat all the first emergency people first! and I said okay but he's about to faint. She responded "well he's sitting on a chair isn't he?" From that response I was very disappointed in the staff. While I went out to get some air there was also a cat wondering inside the office... it was one of the staffs cat because they did my do anything about him... isn't this a hospital why is there a cat just wondering around in the ER waiting room. Another incident the nurse told my bf to not put his puke bag on the chair because he'll have to clean the chair cause it'll be contaminated. HE IS PUKING AND HAVING DIARRHEA AT THE SAME TIME AND HE IS ABOUT TO FAINT ARE YOU SERIOUS. Worst staff ever. We then were able to leave from 2am-6am all they did was inject gravol into him and sat in the er waiting area the whole time.

So my wife and I just lost our second baby, and was in riveling pain was crying as she just got out of surgery, she has 4 holes through her abdomen and this Barb on 7th in womans health could've cared..Time to Retire you Old Bat! Calls Security, as that is her only recourse. FAIL!

Emerge is a nightmare. I attended with a broken foot, waiting for 5 hours and was tols that 7 other people are ahead if me... There were only 5 patients in the waiting room 2 that were there before me. All 3 of us left, I am waiting to go to an other hospital in the morning. On a side note... While I waited, along with the other two who were waiting before me, 18 other cases were seen and discharged. This is sad.

marco oakley

Sounds like maybe a bit of a madhouse in the emegency area, but what do you expect? I had AMAZING care recently in-and-out of the Neuroscience and ICU wards. Absolutely top shelf. Clean, professional, courteous staff, caring skilled nurses, and my doctors were freaking wizards! Makes a huge difference how busy they are though, so cut them some slack if it's not exactly a 5 star hotel type experience. At their best they are excellent, trust me.

Breanna A

If you must go through the emergency department I find this one quicker and less chaotic than Royal Jubilee Emergency. This is also the hospital that does obstetrics and deals with pediatric issues. There is a Tim Hortons. There is also a cafeteria. Neither are great. It's better to go to the new strip mall nearby instead for food. Parking is in two hour increments but if you're parking a day or so a week pass costs about the same (good for maternity patients) and with a weekly pass if you display the parking pass on your dash you can move around from stall to stall if you leave to get food, etc. (Hourly passes don't need to be displayed). There is a gift shop and a little ATM.

Spencer Miller

I had a non emergency situtaion that failed to be dealt with at a walk in clinic. The staff at the hospital still saw me, and did what they could to help me despite being turned away everywhere else. I super appreciated their care even though my complaint was so minor they still took time for me and didnt treat me like a waste of time. Thank you nice blonde doctor lady.

I was left alone for over 2 hours now in the exam room. No one checked on me a single time. Handed me a gown, closed the door, and gone. The doctor was great though.

I've been admitted in immediate sub/acute care for a few days, and also attended ER when my kids (truly) needed immediate care. Sure, I've waited long hours alongside the rest which is frustrating to someone in pain. There's a boatload of people who go to ER for "stubbing a toe" - completely non emergency stuff. Reading the low scoring reviews for VicGen is hilarious. Someone like Shelley Burlet who whines about a Doctor who upfront asks to be told if Shelley needs more freezing for stitches as they are put in. Shelley does and is in pain, but then doesnt tell the Doc. And then gives a 1Star review. Grow up Shelley, and learn to speak. I do agree with someone else in that the parking prices are outrageous and tacky in every way. Robinson, you are money grabbers. VicGen exec staff, you're being low rent for charging sick folk to receive care just to be there. But as far as medical and support staff are concerned? 5/5.

Pat Peterson

not even worth one star...my daughter went there couple weeks ago....basically kicked out.....after her mother was saying she is not ready to go home.....was being transported back home by ambulance had to get rushed to the emergency in duncan hospital and is now back in her same room in VGH less then 12 hours later....

My experience in Day Sergical was very positive. Helen did my intake with effficency and humor. Melissa was my release nurse and she was warm and efficient. It was a bit hectic at the beginning of the admission but when I got out of surgery all was in order. PS...the women in the OR were great too. Let me swear without judgement. And Props to Cory for finding the vein.

Nurses and doctors are great. The useless lab technicians are another story. A patient was pissing all over the floor, no one was around so I told them what was happening. Thier response "go get a nurse". One of the techs just watched the girl piss on the floor and continued her conversation with the other useless tech.

Terrible experience- I have a bad back injury and a lot of pain can’t sit or stand for any length of time— called before going to emerg and explained my injury and was told I would likely be there 2 hours and they weren’t busy —went straight there (5min away) get there and told they have no beds and it was busy And I’d have to sit in very uncomfortable hard chairs or stand ,.. really frustrated. If they’re busy and have no beds, don’t tell someone with a disc injury that it’s slow ????????

I started bleeding more and she said it is mostlikly miscarrage with her smiles. How can nurses tell us that it is miscarrage or not and how can she tell me with her smiles? She is not a nurse. I fet She is a demon.

23 years ago I came to emergency with sever stomach pain that resulted in emergency surgery and a two week stay. The doctors and nurses here were amazing! I never had the chance to thank them for all that they did for me. You saved my life! Forever grateful ❤️

Come in to emergency with 6yr old son. Got excellent care. Big thankyou to Dr. Mike, Stuart, Chris and the rest of the team. Broken arm was tended to quickly and thoroughly. Great job guys.

I went to VGH to get my hand stitched up and x-rayed after a dirt bike accident, they stitched me up with dirt still in my wound and gave me antibiotics to fight the chance of infections. After the x-ray came through they told me I didn't break any bones and it was just a laceration, even though I insisted there was something worse than that. I went to the Royal Jubilee the next day, got a new x-ray and found out my knuckle was broken, exactly what I told the doctor at VGH.

Staff inside are generally quite caring and interested in actually attempting to help the patient. Of course lots of different aspects to this hospital, so many of these reviews need to be taken with a grain of salt. My experience, 4/5 stars.

I work here but it's a good place for patients and their visitors for diagnostic tests and acute care. Basic amenities plus now the site has public wifi access.

This Emergency is worst horror show, some of the emergency staff need to trained in quality patient care. One nurse yelled at me from down the hall and I hadn't done anything. they sat me out in the front walk in area with an I.V. in my arm. After when I was taken into the back to see the doctor the rooms and seats were nearly empty. I have had good experiences in other areas in VGH.. They need to review the emergency staff. I have many friends who have had a bad experience there as well.

Went to nuclear imaging for a bone scan. Moe the technician was fantastic. He gave very clear, concise instructions and was very professional. The hospital is lucky to have such wonderful staff!!

I can’t express enough how helpful , kind and considerate all the staff were during my Mums hospitalization and the excellent care she received ICU right up to the end. Thank you to the amazing care from the nurses who cared for her
