My mother passed late one evening, I spent the next several hours looking on line for a service provider to take over from the hospital. Being in the middle of a pandemic and 14 hours away from Winnipeg only made the decision that much more difficult. The following morning I called Ethical Death Care to see if they could help. From the initial contact, to the mailing of my mother’s paperwork the staff were wonderful. Always willing to help and very professional. I had learned from arranging my fathers funeral with another company(which was terrible) what costs were important to me and what was not necessary. They were always upfront with costs, and tried to find ways to save money, which was necessary as my mother didn’t have anything saved or planned for. Friends and family loved the video tribute which was a great way to honour her while gatherings were not allowed in Manitoba due to covid restrictions. MR. Neufeld and the team at EDC were truly a delight to work with, and took all the stress out of what could have been a horrible and stressful experience. We didn't want bells and whistles, and fancy this/that, so we opted for the "simple cremation". We really appreciated a few key things that they did: 1) No upsell. We did not feel pressured to spend thousands of dollars on expensive boxes and urns and things. We were offered a selection of keepsakes, but even this was done with a very soft sell. We were not made to feel guilty for not putting our loved one's remains (which we intend to scatter per her wishes) in an elaborate and expensive urn. 2) Constant and very effective communication. We received unobtrusive automated emails at each stage of the way letting us know where things were at. In some ways this reduced the stress of the process - just knowing it was progressing. 3) They handled almost everything, and explained everything they didn't. CRA filings, the works. This was the first death that I had to deal with on this level and I found it massively helpful just to know that someone who understood the process was there just to answer questions. 4) Honestly, their price. As we were not paying for a bunch of things we did not need. They came in, quite literally, thousands of dollars cheaper than other providers of this sort of service. Their basic service offered us everything we needed and got the job done perfectly. We found this company based on strong Google reviews, and I hope our experience helps you make that same decision. Really not a single bad thing to say about any of the staff or the entire experience.

They handled everything for us, and made things that were extremely difficult at an emotional time “just a little bit easier”. In the winter of 2020 the world of my wife Christina Marie Knowles came crashing down around us when she was diagnosed with stage four cancer, throughout her body. If you’re reading this, then you found yourself in the same situation I did. Going through this for the first time with no idea what to do next. After my dad passed, it felt like the world rushed to erase him. Less than a day; and the hospital already called three times asking if I chose a funeral home yet.. I knew my dads wishes, everything was just going to be simple.. oddly enough the title was what made me click on this funeral homes site (Winnipeg simple cremation). I had looked at a few other places after, but ended up choosing ethical death care because I was able to pre read everything that was going to be asked of me on the forms before I had called. I wasn’t sure of the exact process but part of me just wanted to be aware of what I would need beforehand.. I guess this is where the review starts. As the moment I called, I felt like the world finally paused for a second. You can’t fake empathy. Everything I thought I was going to have to do, they did for me. All I had to do was call the hospital back to let them know who would be picking up my dad. It sounds a bit silly to reference Canada post tracking, but ethical death care provided email updates throughout the whole process and every step and touch point. It’s small. But it’s one more thing that ended up meaning a lot. So much, I saved them. The in person meeting was scheduled around me and when I felt ready. Even this google review. It’s a month late. There are small details which they will go over with you in the in person meeting. You may be like me and still in a fog. But they take the time to make sure you have every resource you need going forward. Take the time to look through their jewellery options. Again, small. But the ring with my dads fingerprint is the only possession I have that has meaning. It’s hard to explain, but I’m truly sorry when you finally feel it too.

I am having a hard time finding the right words to describe how different this experience was from what I was expecting. From the 1st call I was impressed. Shane was kind, helpful and reassuring. I have found their Funeral Directors to be compassionate, sensitive and very knowledgeable about all aspects in caring for my mother’s final needs. They offered timely appointments and were well prepared regarding all the additional paperwork needs including such things as CPP and OAS, vital statistics requests for the Official Death Certificate, and can even assist with Will probate paperwork! I also received several copies of the Funeral Director death certificate which was useful for dealing with the banks, insurance, etc. They communicated regularly through email about the status of my mother’s arrangement so I was aware of when she was taken into their care, when cremation took place, etc Their costs are very reasonable and affordable. At Ethical Death Care I felt respected and was treated well. This experience with my mother’s funeral planning was so much better than at the corporate funeral home we used for my father. Our family recently engaged Ethical Death Care regarding a Celebration of Life. We were totally satisfied with every aspect of their service. In every way they measured up to the criteria of 'ethical' service. There were separate prices for cremation and for a luncheon and a price for arranging the service which included almost everything needed for a Celebration of Life – no expensive add-ons. If additions were required such as caskets or cremation urns those items were provided at cost. In addition to the normal services associated with a funeral they provided access to an on-line obituary, and recording of the service and prepared a video complete with music, also available on line. They also provided technical know-how and equipment to show videos with excellent sound quality. As an older person I always fear technical glitches but the service contained three videos which were all played without any delays or difficulties. These services were all great but the thing we appreciated most was the compassion and sensitivity to our situation that Shane and his staff displayed . His personal involvement in orchestrating the event gave us confidence and enabled us to engage fully in the sorrows and joys of a Celebration of Life. In addition, they work with an excellent catering service and use a beautiful facility with large windows overlooking the Assiniboine River. Our positive recommendation is unqualified.

I was aware that we were going to need the type of services that you folk provide way back last December. Accordingly I did some research. The first thing I did was a Google search for 'Funeral Scams'. I was appalled by what I discovered though not surprised. I spent 30 years buying goods and services for private industry and government and sales pressure tactics were a way of life but to oversell to people dealing with a family death is truly despicable. Next I looked at a number of service providers on the internet and found that their service offerings were quite vague as was the cost to provide them. Your site was a delight as everything was 'spelled out' and 'costed out' I spoke with Shane and we agreed that Ethical would provide simple cremation services for us when the time came. When the 'time came' one phone call to Shane took care of everything pertaining to the actual cremation. In addition Shane provided all kinds of advice and information regarding banking, who to notify in government, Vital Statistics concerns as well as Land Titles and changes to my will. The tribute page was wonderful. The family provided the Obit , pictures and song titles and you folk made it into quite 'something' that drew complimentary comments from all who viewed it. The Celebration of Life was also a collaborative effort between you and the family, mainly Lorne and Donna, and you pulled it off without a hitch in spite of the restrictions dictated by Covid. The facility was great and the whole affair was handled professionally and with the utmost respect. I don't even know where to start, I will start by saying I HIGHLY recommend Ethical Death Care!!!! I unexpectedly lost my father recently. I had been made the executor of his will and I had NO idea what I was doing. I was completely lost and heartbroken, when I spoke with Shane at Ethical Death Care he made me feel like my Dad was important. He focused on helping me do what was best for us as a family to honor my Dad. He met EVERY need I had, spoken or unspoken. He felt like a family friend! I recently dealt with Ethical Death Care leading up to and following the passing of my wife. My wife had a critical illness and we decided to discuss her wishes before her passing. My wife spoke about the bad experience her family had dealing with one of the larger, well known funeral homes. Specifically, how they were lied to and deceived by the funeral home's up-sell strategy. They were taken advantage of at their time of grief. We decided to select Ethical Death Care after reviewing their website and speaking with them on the phone. The staff at Ethical Death Care were extremely helpful and honest throughout the entire process. There was absolutely no pressure to spend more than what was required. Their prices were well below that of the larger funeral homes and they made the entire experience as easy as possible. They provide the very same services of the larger funeral homes but at a much better cost. I recommend watching the Marketplace video on their website which describes the unethical practices that other funeral homes follow solely to make money off of the death of your loved one. I highly recommend Ethical Death Care for your loved one's care at their passing.

Ethical Death Care uses unethical practices to advertise and drive business to their services. Recently, we had a death in the family, googled costs for obits in Free Press. This site comes up first giving the impression you are dealing with the Free Press, when in fact you are not. Ethical Death Care never once told us they would be advertising in the obituary by placing their name on it. We never had an dealings with Ethical Death care except through this egregious manipulation of internet misleading people in their hardest times. When confronted, they became extremely defensive. This is predatory behavior, steer clear folks!
