REVIEWS OF Butler's Burial Ground IN Niagara-on-the-Lake

William Sandham

The cemetery lawn is well maintained with the grass trimmed low. The Butler crypt (now almost completely buried) showed a bit of graffiti daubed over the door and the low lying land around the site has been cleared of trees thus detracting from the romanticism of this historical spot. A foot bridge crossing the creek on the approach to the grounds looks like a bit of a half measure for such an important spot. Some proper landscaping would benefit the area.

Steve Enns

Not much to see. There's 2 plaques and a few headstones, that's it. The area is fenced off but the gate was "open" (though swung almost closed). Wouldn't recommend spending the time, many other, better landmarks.

Karl Peterman

Cool little historical cemetery. Nice they recreated the tombstones so you can read what they used to say. Interesting that they buried the crypt (see the sign at the nearby bridge) Maybe that'll be unearthed someday...

For such an influential part of Canadian history, the family grave sites feel like a forgotten bit of history surrounded with suburban sprawl. I always appreciate it's hard to upkeep everything in our history but the Butler's are a significant portion of what made early Canada and the grave sites are beyond forgotten, they're practically in people's backyards. It honestly feels like if the local developers could have moved them, they would have. That said, it's an easy walk along the two mile conservation trail, and worth taking a few minutes on your way to the garrison where Parks Canada has done a great job preserving buildings.
