I love this friendly neighborhood hardware store. As a longtime resident of the Chelsea district, I've always come to Arties in search of hardware items and for having keys cut. Never once have I ever had to return keys made at Arties. The store staff is very knowledge with anwsering hardware questions. I recall I was in a situation where I was locked out from my apt, since I went chasing after my cat in the hallway. I reached out to Arties for help. Arties immediately dispatched a seasoned locksmith who then was able to get me inside of my apt. On both sides of the store you'll find different employees who are experts on matters related to paint, cleaning, locks, etc. On one occasion I had to paint my entire apartment; the folks in the paint department helped me select a paint coat and explained to me all the various paint supplies I would need for the task. The employee was even kind enough to write down on paper all the steps to follow for painting my apartment walls. Contrast to large corporate aka hardware stores Arties provides the live customer interaction.

Had a problem with an elevator lock. Described what I thought it was to 2 locksmiths at 2:30pm. One estimated that it would be $65 for the service call and $135 for labor and that they couldn't come until after 5pm. Artie's wouldn't give me an estimate (because they didn't know for sure what the problem was...I described it reasonably well) other than to say their service call was $25 but they could be here in about an hour. Even without an estimate, I let Artie's do the job and it was only $95 (it was very straightforward) not sure if the other place would have actually charged $200 but they also knew what the job was. The guy who came from Artie's was pleasant and professional and finished the job in 15 minutes or less. If they can, these companies would do well to give you an estimate that specifically describes their understanding of the situation with the caveat that a deviation from that situation can result in higher charges (or examples of a range of charges for typical work). This would allow a customer to better compare them to alternatives. In the future I can fix this myself if it happens again. That being said I'm pleased with the result - quick, effective and courteous.

UPDATE: I got a call from Ben who explained that it was an outside contractor that came to my home, that sometimes after hours they use freelancers. He is willing to make good on this job and give a partial refund, so I am feeling better about Artie's as a business. I called in the evening to have someone look at a broken deadbolt. The guy on the phone could not give me a solid quote but said a new deadbolt is around $150-$175. What he didn't tell me was the exorbitant price for labor. The guy showed up promptly and was very nice - took a very long time to install the new deadbolt and now though it works fine, my door is harder to open and close so I don't think it was aligned properly. But the worst part is he didn't give me an exact quote till my deadbolt was removed, thus leaving me no choice but to pay a SKYROCKETED fee from what I was quoted on the phone. I feel robbed and am extremely disappointed in what I thought was a long time neighborhood business. I'm thinking this is not the same people as when Artie's Hardware was open.

Completely professional and available (on a Saturday no less!!) from scheduling to service. Avi (the lock technician) was here when he said we would be, so friendly it kept me calm, kept me in the loop each step of the way and was able to turn my emergency into a painless experience. Hopefully I never need a locksmith again, BUT if I do then the only people I'm calling are Artie's Locksmith. If you find yourself in a similar bind then call them! I can't recommend them enough.

Wow, talk about terrible customer service. I came into this place to buy some hollow anchors but don't plan to come back ever again. First off, it took forever to even find anchors as everything was poorly labeled. Meanwhile, there are several employees just standing around not doing anything. When I asked for help from one of them (I had metric numbers and wasn't sure of the U.S. equivalent), this guy treats me like I'm an idiot for not knowing exactly what I need and just walks off. Finally, I just grab what I believe to be the correct anchors and get in line to pay for them. There's an employee 5 feet from the register but he doesn't do anything. Eventually, as a line starts to form behind me, I yell over to the employee to ask if he's going to help us. Finally, he very begrudgingly comes over and takes care of my purchase. Don't go to this place unless you know exactly what you need, are willing to spend time to look for it yourself, and don't plan to talk to anyone that works there.

One of the worts locksmiths I've had to deal with, it took him 2 hours to get to where I was, they are located on 14 st and 7 ave, I was on 15 st and 10th ave, once he got there he wanted to charge me $100 more than we had initially agreed to, then he didn't have the right equipment so he had to go back, it's needles to say that it took him almost 2 hours to get back. When everything was done it was time to pay, my company wanted to pay with a credit card via telephone which they said it's okay, once the information was given to them the "owner" said that he couldn't take the credit card because it could have been a stolen credit card, and the only way of making the payment was either cash or going personally to their location. I spent over 4 hours standing and waiting for a service that was not even good (the actual job took 5 minutes) . (Btw the locksmith was on YouTube checking "how to " videos to do the job) . Stay Away From This Locksmith !

Called these guys when I got locked out. I'd left in a hurry and forgot to grab my keys, then the door slammed shut .... I kept trying to figure out some other way to get back into my apartment. But I finally decided I'd better call someone with the right knowhow, cuz I didnt want to make the situation any worse than it was. I'm a skeptical person, so I called around to a few different places first. But the guy who answered the phone here seemed to know what he was talking about, so that reassured me. They got to my place less than twenty minutes later (which was awesome), and the locksmith Avi was actually a really good guy. I was expecting to be talked down to, but no, he was quite friendly. Price was not what I expected either, much lower. I won't lock myself out again, but ....I will say that it was a far better experience than I imagined it would be. This company is affordable, friendly, and available immediately. If you ever need a locksmith, I highly recommend you call Arties.

Beyond horrible experience!! Wish I could give a negative rating! I requested to have a lock rekeyed and they did not disclose the rekeying criteria until they arrived onsite. Then, after I ok'ed the purchase of the new lock set, the technician took 4.5 hours to install at a total cost of $880!! I checked local home improvement stores and the same lock is $50/set. But it gets better! After all that time and money, the lock installed was done incorrectly - it was literally put in backwards! They came out to fix it but said the it was fine. When I brought out a different contractor to install a security system, he could not even install it because the lock technician used the wrong lock, wrong door handle and installed it improperly. I had to pay for someone to fix their mistake. When I contacted them, they said they would refund all the labor and lock charges for the door. I have documentation of their admission of negligence and yet their accounting department would only refund $50! And people wonder why we are such a litigious society - people like this are why. Don't make the mistake I did and call these guys. There are better options out there.

My recommendation is to not use the service from this place because the technician will fool you by making a big deal of a job by saying its very complex, charges heavily and then finishes the job in 5 mins. I don't recommend "professionals" who like to run their business by taking advantage of other people's lack of knowledge.

Installed our lock incorrectly the first time, causing the lock to jam and locking us out for 4.5 hours. When someone finally came to fix the mistake, they were hours past their time slot. When I called to see where the locksmith was, they said that he had arrived, but then it was another 40 minuets until he actually got here. The actual locksmith that came was nice and helpful, but the company as a whole is very frustrating to deal with.

Went out clubbing, and I lost my keys. When the cab dropped me at my apartment, it was already late. At 2am, I was sure that I could not get any help from any locksmith. Unsure of where to go when I could not find my keys in my bag, I called back the cab driver to see if he can take me to my friends. But he gave me the number of a locksmith whose services are 24/7. When I called the number, I had a guy at my door within just a 20 minutes. He opened the door for me and charged me a fair price for a despite the time. Thank you for the great service!
