Hours should be posted as 9:30am - 5:45pm. I had something I wanted to quickly print - it'd only take a minute or two. I was running late and got there at 5:55pm. The doors were locked! I couldn't even enter the library. I snuck in as some other people were leaving, then the librarian told me they're closed. She commented that she thought the door was locked, puzzled that I somehow made it in.
I said "Aren't you still open for a couple more minutes?"
She looked at her watch and couldn't deny it. I explained I just had to print something quick, she said I only have 2 minutes. I headed to the computer and she told me I won't be able to login, the IT crew has it set to lockout 15 minutes to closing, apparently.
Funny, just yesterday I was able to use the computer and print something about 10 minutes to closing time.
Anyway, not very impressed the staff had no interest in assisting me with printing 2 pages of paper. Highly unimpressed the door is LOCKED at 5:55pm (or earlier?) when the hours of operation posted on the door says they close at 6:00pm. I get it, you don't want stragglers coming in 1 minute to closing and wandering around for 10 minutes. You shouldn't advertise yourself as being "open" when you're simply not, though. Locking the doors is about as closed as you can get.
If I was allowed in at 5:55pm, I could've printed my documents and been out the door before 6:00pm. Even if it took an extra minute or 2, so what? It's not like the staff is clocking out and hopping in their cars right on the dot; they probably have another half hour on the clock after closing. I would venture a guess I'm not the first person to try and enter the library close to closing time, hence their made-up protocol to lock the doors before their regular hours of operation have expired. They've already made up their mind that they don't want to help people who come in late, it's too annoying for them. Here's an idea: if this is such a regular occurrence (to the point that you've decided to lock the doors early), maybe you should extend your hours of operation?
Perhaps this library deserves a 3/5 or 4/5, generally speaking - the parking situation is fine, location is good if you're in the area, selection seems a bit small compared to other libraries (it's not a big building). This was a very sour experience for me, though, hence the 2/5 rating.
