I find this a convenient library to visit, however, I find the staff there are extremely unprofessional. Libraries are supposed to be quiet places. Not so this one. Readers are quiet but you find staff constantly socializing, chatting, telling each other their life stories, weekend plans, etc. and all within hearing distance of people who are either trying to read or working on the computers. There have been several times I've actually "looked" at them but they've ignored me and just kept on their merry way.
They have now opened up "self-serve" check outs. When they were first introduced, I asked one of the staff to check out a number of books for me. She directed me to the machine and very condescendingly, "guided" me through it. I did mention that I'd have preferred that she do it for me. Turns out I had checked out 2 Lightning loan books and the printout showed 1 to be returned within 1 week and the other 3 weeks (for which I'd have been charged fines). If this is what's going to happen with self check out, I can imagine the problems people are going to have.
I do check out a number of books and as I finish them I drop them off in the drop box of this branch. A recent problem I had was when I received 2 emails informing me that a certain book was long overdue. I was certain I had returned it and finally called up Central Library. After being put on hold, it was finally concluded that I had indeed returned the book.
Again, I revert back to the question I started out with - what are the staff so busy doing? I personally find they are overstaffed.
