If you're going to the library to study, DO NOT GO TO HUMBER BAY LIBRARY. This branch is the farthest thing from a library. It's a small building (all 1 room) with 1 washroom stall (with a broken toilet seat), 3 work tables that in total sit about 13 people, and four parking spots (and one accessible spot) total. The tiny "parking lot" is located at the pack of the library which has a small route to get there and can only accommodate 1 car at a time. So if you're driving off of park lawn into the parking route to the back, while someone is trying to leave the library, prepare to back all the way up back onto park lawn because the other person most probably can't back up into the parking lot. Also, the "library" is completely child focused, where children are running around and screaming. It's really a daycare.
While I write this critique, there is a mother sitting at a computer with her child crying and screaming at the top of his lungs, and all the mother is saying is stop while typing at the computer. The librarian faculty is doing NOTHING for this situation. Why are the librarians ignoring this child's disruptions? This child might have some needs that are not being met by the caregiver (hungry, thirsty, sick) but the mother and LIBRARIAN STAFF are dismissing this childs screeching. I took an audio recording of this situation and am investigating who is the appropriate and competent personnel to send it to.
The staff are inconsistent. One day I asked for 1 scrap paper and the librarian didn't protest but rather kindly gave me two papers. A few weeks later I requested scrap paper again, and a different librarian told me that it would cost 15 cents. I said that I don't have any change and would have to pay with my library card. She tried to do the process but was unsuccessful, then asked another librarian who said to just give me the page for free as the process with my library card was too complicated. Why did one librarian give me a scrap paper for free, when the other one wanted me to pay? Also, I was told that I am not permitted to eat in the library as that's the standard with all Toronto Libraries, however according to the Rules Of Conduct: Library Policies and Terms of Use Toronto Public Library Page; "Eating and drinking are allowed except in designated areas". There were no signs around where I was eating saying that food was prohibited.
Also, I was told that I had to move desks because the table I was working on was assigned for computer users only. The librarian told me to sit at another desk and motioned to the desk that had a "reserved for group" sign on it. I said I can't sit there because of the sign, and she replied that the group is at 2:00PM (at the time it was 11AM so three hours before the group started) so I can sit there. I told her she should remove the sign until closer to the group time as no one will sit at that table. She said that was a good idea, but moved the sign to the end of the table (still on the table). Since there are only 3 tables TOTAL at this library, having a reserved sign three hours before the group starts limits visitors to about 8 seats available.
The only washroom at the location is a one room accessible bathroom with a broken toilet seat that is shifted completely sideways. Therefore it is no longer accessible because folks who are in a wheelchair can't twist to sit on the broken toilet seat. Consequently, they might try to twist and 1. hurt their muscles of bones or 2.fall of the seat and get seriously injured, or will urinate and/or defecate onto themselves or onto the floor. Every time I have used this washroom there seemed to be urine on the ground.
If you're looking to get out of the house and enter a daycare full of screaming children and incompetent librarians, please don't hesitate to go to the Humber Bay Branch Toronto Public Library! If I could I would give this library 0/5 but google doesn't let me do this. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AT THIS LIBRARY.
