STILL NO REVIEWS OR EVALUATIONS
My original review was quite angry, because a good part of our stay had been ruined with loud thumping music coming from the pub in the courtyard just below our window. Talking to the front desk yielded no result. I have now received an apology an explanation from management. It seems that this was a fairly unusual occurrence, rather than the chronic problem that I thought it might be.
I would give this hotel a 3 out of 5, when it comes down to it. Like all the hotels in that area in Victoria, it is really overpriced for what you get. We were unhappy to discover when we got there that amenities such as coffee and in-stay room servicing, meaning bed making and such, was not happening right now, although there was no reduction in price for this situation. More to the point, this was not communicated to us until we got there. I prefer to make an informed choice, especially when I'm spending multiple hundreds of dollars a day on a room. One outcome was that we ran out of toilet paper in the middle of the night. It turned out that nobody had thought to leave any extra rolls in the room, despite us being there for four days and three nights. So that wasn't the most fun. As well, there were actual food smears all over the front of the refrigerator, and very thick dust on the base of the lamp, both of which made us somewhat uneasy about the standards of hygiene in the COVID era. I know there's a real labour shortage problem, and they can't necessarily get the kind of help they need. Still, seeing a high touch point such as the fridge door being outright dirty and clearly not touched by the room servicing crew was pretty unsettling.
However, there were definitely some upsides. The bed was clean and comfortable, the blackout curtains worked well, we had a nice balcony that got lots of sun, and the cooling and heating system was nice and quiet, which made a change from a lot of hotels. The TV has a guide channel, so you can actually tell what you're watching, which is another big change from a lot of hotels. And the bathtub has a plug that actually keeps water in, which makes it one of the few that has worked in my fairly long experience of hotels.
I don't know if we would stay here again. I think if we thought that noise or other problems would be addressed while we were still there, we might. But I'm not super confident, given our experience of an unresponsive front desk, that that would happen. On the other hand, I'm not seeing any great reviews of any other hotels in the immediate downtown Victoria area. So maybe the Quality Inn is a decent enough option, all things considered.
