Old airbase. Not much left to see. Disappointing to explore.

My dad was Public Works Officer 1955-57. LCDR Ernest Sidney. Sea Bee. WWII Korea Vietnam. We didn't have television and didn't miss it. We had an indoor swimming pool, indoor roller skating, square dancing, bowling and movies. Every kid had a giant birthday party at Northeast Arm Camp!! I am planning a trip to Newfoundland summer 2018 in a 17 ft Casita and my pickup truck! I'll post during that trip.

Abandoned Airfield. Former WWII base. Nice to visit, not a valid Airport any more.

Overflew this place in 1962 en route from McGuire AFB to RAF Mildenhall. Took a picture from about five miles up. About 50 years later I was able to identify what I had photographed. I have uploaded that image here.

My Dad was a Sea Bee stationed in Argentina from 1767 to 1969 or 70 between tours in Vietnam. The only way there was by ferry. What an adventure for a child. I remember condition "1" weather, conditions so harsh that no one was allowed outside but dad would have to report for duty. and playing outside in the snow at recess when conditions weren't so bad. The sun barely setting summer and darkness all winter. It was primitive in some respects outside of the base as I recall. But even at 7 years old I was in awe of the rugged beauty. Moose would come down where the barracks were and grace at night when everyone had gone inside. It seemed to snow all the time except in the summer but it was always cool outside. As I child I loved it. It's kind of sad to see every bit of it gone.

I flew an EC121 AEW&C aircraft into Argentia in 1969 for fuel. I well remember the TINY snack shop and the British Vulcan bomber in the rear of the old hanger.

Lived near here from 12/71 to 6/73 as a 9 and 10 year old kid. Loved it in Argentia!

Not much left to see now that everything has been tore down..still a few abandoned building and bunkers... runway and roads still intact

This airfield was known as NAS Argentia....Naval Air Station Argentia and I was stationed there for 18 months as a radio operator. The airborne early warning squadron was stationed there to detect Soviet aircraft movement. It was a "key" location during the "cold war". Argentia was also the place FDR and W. Churchill signed the land lease program during WW2.

Served as a Marine for base security from 1955 to 1957. Met some wonderful people and have many great memories of my time in Newfoundland and on the Navy Base.

My dad was stationed in Argentia for many years and was a Sea Bee, he served in Korea and Vietnam and I spent my very young years on Argentia. I remember that everyone knew my dad and that it was a great place to explore for 3 little girls. I remember mom and daddy dressing up for the Sea Bee Ball and the wonderful thanksgiving dinner s that were held at the Chiefs Club and the BOQ when we move off base in the early 70s

My father was the XO from 1980 to 1983. Loved living there! Happiest childhood place for a 9-12 yr old. Didnt like the fact i couldnt get away with anything seeing my dads position in base...lol . He knows what im talking about. Loved the snow and fishing and hiking and camping and general exploring with friends.

Thank you for posting this picture, and the info you shared. I have always wondered about Argentia, the Naval Airsta, Newfoundland..... My dad was a young U.S.Coast Guard Pilot stationed there 1957(?58?)-1960. I was born there in 1959, near the end of July, my mom told me there was snow on the ground the day I was born. In 1975 or 1976 when dad was stationed in Juneau, Alaska a group of Newfies happened to be visiting the area and attended a Coast Guard cocktail party I had helped my mom make some appetizers for. They oved the smoked salmon dip I had made. Really super nice folks and we got to chat for awhile, it was a real pleasure meeting them. I have fond memories of their kindness and warmth.

This was a marvelous place to spend a couple of years when I was young. When I lived there, school stopped at sixth grade and anyone in a higher grade had to do correspondence courses or return to the states. It snowed on my birthday - June 30. We had so much freedom to roam and hike and explore. There was an old machine gun “nest” that we explored and it still had electronics and papers in it. Also there was a huge bunker with heavy metal doors that we could open and enter through. It had bathrooms and large rooms that looked like barracks. The water was still able to be turned on in there. There was an old silver mine up in the hills not too far from the reservoir. I remember there was a Northside and a Southside. I believe we lived on the Southside. They were building a quarters on the hill behind us and they had just completed the multi story, brick bachelor officers quarters up on the big hill to our left. Our quarters faced the school and baseball diamond. I remember the top of the school antenna got clipped by an airplane coming in for landing one day. That was exciting. Our school was called Arthur L Bristol, and it had originally been a barracks. Someone sent me a link recently so I could see what was then a new BOQ when we were there imploded as they cleared the base after the lease was up. Northeast Arms Camp with its whale carcasses and huge trees and cabins - such an amazing place. we could actually catch trout in a stream not too far from our quarters. It was truly the happiest place or the place where I was the happiest. Lord knows I even remember seeing one of my teachers Mrs. Ramsey break a yardstick beating a child named Jeffrey the first day I joined the class, and then she was always yelling at Harvey Day. I even remember her class pet who was DeeDee Sharp. Thank goodness my next year in school was calmer there. I have been back to Newfoundland several times, but have never been able to get down to Argentia. It would probably break my heart and they probably wouldn’t let me hike the hills.
