Located within the historic BC Penitentiary Gatehouse. This impressive, fort-like stone structure was originally built in the 1930's as the main entrance to the federal maximum security prison that was located on these grounds. After the prison closed in 1980, and the prison walls and guard towers were torn down, the gatehouse was preserved as a heritage building. The stone steps that lead from E Columbia St, up to the gatehouse, are also original to the BC Peniteniary. Today it houses Sunshine Montessori and a neighbourhood pub.
