I hired Maureen Coates to help me with window coverings, and I regret the waste of money and the disappontment. I asked for design principles for each window, as well as recommendations for sourcing fabric, hardware and the making of at least some of the treatments. I provided full details in writing on these topics as to what specifically I wanted help with and had questions about. She agreed to the terms. What I got back from her after the home-visit consultation was shockingly lazy and incomplete. She did not provide overall design principles for each window, nor complete/any recommendations for fabric types, pattern sizes or hardware. In several instances, she made suggestions that contradicted my stated preferences, such as solids when the entire brief was 100% pattern, suggesting denim when I had already specified no blue. What information she did provide was poorly presented, just dropped into spots in the brief I had provided, in point form, not even complete sentences. After I had gathered my thoughts and reiterated the questions that she was supposed to answer, she replied with an email that complained about me to a third party for taking time to get back to her. Whoops! Obviously, she had me on her mind when she was writing to someone -- my guess is the workroom that had provided an estimate on my job. A few hours later, she sent an email saying that she was writing about a potential supplier with the same name, sorry. (It isn't much better to be revealed complaining about one supplier to another). And then, I was not impressed to hear from her that she would be getting around to the answers eventually, after she did some things for herself. Um, what about your JOB? And then she didn't even do it when she said she would, not until her promised delivery date had well passed and I nudged her. Practicalities aside, she seems more concerned with her rates and paycheque than in providing satisfactory service and expertise. I feel like the only information of use that I got from here was where on the wall to hang the rods, and I did not need her specifically for that. Her design recommendation can be summed up as "fabric I like". Needless to say, I do not feel that I benefitted from her design expertise, and I am back where I started.
