So I have finally gotten around to writing a review. Moved to Comox valley last year and decided to have all the old single pain aluminum windows replaced in 2020. We did this back in Ontario and went with NorthStar windows which we were very happy with but aren’t sold here so started looking. After getting 4 quotes in we went with Thermoproof and here is my experience. Our house is cedar siding 2x4 construction, new windows being thicker required old jams be removed, ripped to smaller size and replaced. I agreed to redo the interior casings, Todd’s team would deal with exterior casings. Bear in mind this was all happening during Covid restrictions.
Sales/office - 4.5 stars: Todd and office team were very good at communicating and my quote was complete and included full information about each opening. Price was very good in comparison with other quotes. My only issue was that after accepting the quote, a second, more precise set of measurements wasn’t taken meaning the windows that arrived were a looser fit, approximately 1.5 inches all around meaning jams had to be shimmed out quite a bit leaving larger gaps left uninsulated. But overall sales team was excellent. Approximately 8 weeks from order to install.
Installation - 3 stars: Bearing in mind this was during Covid restrictions, everyone feeling stressed. One experienced installer arrived and a trainee assistant. Install took 4 days. Guys were polite and friendly, arrived early and worked hard all day. After they left there was a few things needed fixing which I was able to do easily so didn’t call them back - not all the jams were nailed in or shimmed on all sides(since I was doing the interior casings I fixed this as I went). Outside, they did not fill all the new screw holes in casings, sawdust was left all over siding, greasy hand prints on windows and siding needed to be cleaned. I had to repaint around new casings as the smaller profile revealed older paint underneath so again, I dealt with all this as I went around. Work area was cleaned up really well, had bits and pieces lying around the house to clean up but that’s to be expected.
Product - 4 stars: We went with 2 pane Low-E glass, they all work very smoothly. Our NorthStar slider windows had a latch release which allowed them to pivot inside for easy cleaning. This was great for 2nd story windows. I will have to get back on a ladder for these..☹️ Some of the crank hardware seems a little less rugged, but function well...
So overall I would recommend Thermoproof windows, hopefully some of the installation issues were just Covid stress related...
