We hired Alchemy Renovations to do most of the work in a complete basement renovation which included replacing a concrete floor, adding a full bathroom, and framing the basement for finishing work to be done by us. At first, they were great to work with. Then, we started noticing some lack of attention in regards to the quality of work. A few examples: a new wall that was framed 2 inches off square, leading to inability to install drywall without fixing it first, a mismatched door installed, doors left unpainted, a door frame installed incorrectly, a mirror installed with glue that isn't level and can't be changed, a faulty bathroom fan installed and not fixed, a very poor paint job that had to be re-done, concrete floor was not poured level and had to be patched. This all amounted to many hours of work done by myself to correct the issues.
The worst of it all was that they did pull a permit for the job, however they did not arrange for any inspections to be done with the City. When the owner of Alchemy showed up for the final inspection, he denied knowing that progress inspections were mandatory, even though this is clearly stated on the City website. Now, they have totally abandoned the project and left me to deal with the City Inspector and finalizing the permit on my own.
Another note to mention is that although we found this company through Trusted Saskatoon, Trusted stood up for the company when we were in final negotiations and not the customer.
Buyer beware - do not pay anything over 75% of the bill unless the entire project is done to your satisfaction, and ensure permits are pulled properly and inspections done along the way.
