I was in ER last night, they did a very good job in taking me in, speaking to me, knowing the pain, help me to reduce pain, allow me to have my friend by my side , really nice people. The shift changed, new nurse was super fresh and nice. Professional and did not rush me

Yes.. wait is long... But understand they're trying to save lives.. and if yours is not in immediate danger.. then you wait.... Have that expectation then you'll be just fine....

I just needed malaria blood tests that were ordered by my doc. The Tropical Medicine department at VGH wasn't responding for over a week despite the doctor's request being marked as urgent. ER was viewed as last resort to get the tests done. From 8am to 11am, there was just a ton of waiting around despite the ER not even being busy. The worst part is that different staff would ask the same questions over and over: Where were you traveling? How long were you there? When did the symptoms start? What were the symptoms? Etc. It was very tiring and there was no actual progress towards getting the blood test. I eventually asked if they actually intend to do a blood test or not. They said yes in some time (after I answer the same questions from yet another person...), and that I would have to wait even longer in the ER to get the results... They said they wouldn't give me the results if I leave the ER after taking the test. At that point I realized this place doesn't care about its patients and I ended up leaving and buying my doctor's prescribed malaria treatment. The whole experience made me wish I would have post-poned my flight back to Vancouver. The quality of care is infinitely better in Asia. Being a patient at VGH has made me lose hope in the future of our country.

Very good and kind staff there except the doctor in Schedule on that day , really poor service and she wasn’t even want to talk to the patient for a mins , very rush and poor medical knowledge for her I am pretty sure , it’s a really bad experience for me and for most of the patients. If she doesn’t want to help the patients then just go home ! Don’t be a doctor!

Extremely RUDE nurses, waiting for 4 HOURS to see a doctor...

They don’t even deserve a single star. No care for patient. If someone is dying with pain they just let him to die. Just making free money and came to work just for timepass. Due to these people health facilities is getting worse

Still waiting for more than 3 hours to be seen by a doctor. Asked one of the nurses about how much long is going to take until then, I got an arrogant "I can't give you an estimate". In other countries sick people are taken care of. But, unfortunately, we're in this 3rd world country called Canada. Useless Canadian Medical System...!

I had a bad fall and was even having a hard time to breathe. I couldn't sit so I had to stand the entire time I waited to be helped. 2h later they gave me a bed which they only let me use for 30min and then asked me to vacate the bedroom. So there I was, standing again for over 4h this time, waiting for an X-Ray. When was finally called they saw the difficulty I had to walk and said I had to wait again for a bed to be available so they could take me there because it was “too far”. Waited over an hour again, until I had to ask when I was going to be helped and the lady with my paper said “oops, I'm sorry, I skipped you by accident, but I'm taking this patient now so you'll have to wait until they are done”. Truly makes me wonder if the people who work here have actual training.

I recently was admitted to VGH ER after I called 911 for an emergency. Though the individual interactions I had with each staff member was quite good (especially the 911 operator and ambulance staff who were excellent), the duration of time between each step was excruciating slow. I waited hours and hours in the waiting room, freezing in just a hospital gown and a sheet, for almost 12 hours. I was later informed that there were supposedly welfare workers on site, but I saw no clear sign of them. I think I would have had to pass out from the cold and hunger before I received any attention! Very, very disappointed.

Unbelievable wait time. 5 hours omfg.

Family and friends are always helped promptly with minimal wait times. It was a 5 hour wait for us but the friendly non- judgemental client- centered approach made the experience worth the time . It is not the most convenient hospital for us but if you live in Vancouver it is number one. Houses the best services and access to the best medical professionals in BC. Great team of people working together towards one common goal of helping people in need of care.

I suffered in agonizing pain at home for 3 days before deciding to admit myself into the ER. The ER treats on an urgency basis. It’s not a first come first serve place. My biggest point I anxiety against going was my preconceived view on how long and uncomfortable my wait time would be. It was either my luck of the draw, or more likely they gauged my case to be worthy is being dealt with sooner. The staff right down to the porter were extremely polite. I was happy to have been seen first by a student doctor Matthew, and later have him perform the emergency procedure under supervision.

THANK YOU to all of the VGH ER staff that took such good care of me after my horrific bike accident. I felt deeply scared, shocked and in pain and the gentle care I received from every care person, made it easier. THANK YOU ambulance workers, nurses, spinal resident and the ER doc who gave me stitches and was teaching a lovely nursing student. I cannot express my gratitude and appreciation for the care you provided me. THANK YOU!

John Ma

Well focused patient-centred care.

I had emergency situation due to serious allergy issue that makes me so difficult to walk and breathe and doesn't go away but slightly gets worse. I came here and finally met doctor after 5 hours, I cannot believe he said exactly like "WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO". He obviously heard my explanation about my condition, and all he is saying what I want a doctor to do for me? Really? He really doesn't know why patients come emergency center for?

Lyon Gaultier

The most arrogant, careless etc. staff I ever met in my life: 6 hours waiting and I still left without being looked at. I hope all of you get fired. Because you're useless.

Ayyaz

I was here due to a chronic pain, staff and facilities every thing was excellent, very well taken care.. I was moved to a ward for further treatment and found myself in a blessed place. May Allah Bless You All. Regards

It’s the last place you want to be, but people and the quality of care is excellent. They can do blood work, ECG, CT scan, urine, etc to diagnose. TV screen tells you approximately how long to expect to wait. Pay parking available.

Ezekiel Mithaunril

Many people discuss the long wait times, but don't mention if they were in life threatening condition. Every time I have been in such a state I've been seen immediately. When it's less severe I wait longer - the same as when I've been in other Canadian and US hospitals. Staff are hit or miss, as they are in most hospitals, but I do feel I have been taken more seriously here than I have in a lot of other hospitals. This is important as I have several conditions that can become deadly very quickly. Even chronic, non-deadly concerns have been given attention and necessary referrals. All in all it's a hospital. Underfunded and overworked, but good as far as hospitals go.

The hospital service is so good but the only thing about here which is so bad ( paladin security). There’s a one guy named N Gupta in paladin security. He was so rude and he don’t even know how to talk to the patient. Please teach him, otherwise the goodwill of paladin will be in danger.

Mubashir Chaudhry

Accompanied my dad with complain of chest area. Wait was 5 hours but the staff was extremely helpful and friendly. They did ECG, blood tests and Xray (Xray guy was funny he spoke punjabi ????with my dad)

Charles Porter

Staff are uncaring and rude. Pretty obvious that the nurses are just there for a cheque.

Darby Colley

emergency is not emergent

Most people just post bad comments but my experience was really quite good. Yes it takes time to "go through the process" but staff were friendly, helpfull and tried hard to do whatever they could to assist me. One thing they could work on is no food or water available after you go through the waiting area, once inside, you can be there for 5 or 6 hrs so a couple of vending machines in the halls would be helpfull. Thanks VGH

Worst service, wait time of 5 hours No one is working in the VGH treatment center, was bleeding for 7 hours and they just don’t care, entitlement at the maximum Nurses and doctors forgot that the main characteristic in their profession is service They take breaks every 10 minutes Very sad Canada!

THE WORST PLACE YOU WANNA BE FOR AN EMERGENCY! I have waited for 4 hours and a half (1:30 to 5 am) with a closed-up throat caused by an allergy in VGH emergency treatment. There were five to six people waiting before me, after 4.5 hours all were gone, and I was still there. When finally I asked them how much more I need to wait to see the doctor, they said there are 4 patients ahead of you, and you need to wait a couple of more hours! So, I got back home without seeing the doctor and will never wanna be there again. If there was a ZERO star, I'd definitely choose that.

ozz

If zero was an option I’d rate it that. I waited in a freezing waiting room here from 7pm to 3am, with a SEVERE PAIN due to kidney infection & the nurses & Drs were not available to help FOR 8 HRS. Had to go back the next day, because the dr wrote the WRONG prescription. I pay 40% tax in this country, what kind of health case system is this? What is this damn hospital? Runs like a 3rd world country!!!

Let’s be Grown ups

Waiting for 7 hours is inhuman. Nurses and doctors don’t care about patients, bad communication and the process that you have to go through is ridiculous. Don’t go to the “treatment” area, they cannot help you!

Gillian Charpentier

O% for your care. My husband almost called the police because they DID NOT CALL him when I was there a week ago Saturday.
