My step father came here at the suggestion of an emergency room doctor, however when he got to the clinic, he had to wait several hours to see anyone. And when he finally did get in to see someone, they told him he had to lose another 30-50 pounds before they could help him. He is well over 6 feet tall, and is already a very healthy weight, if he loses much more he will be anorexic. This doctor was supposed to be a specialist, but all he did was glance at my step father, tell him to lose weight, and ignore any questions that had been asked, before sending him back out the door. I am very disappointed. He has no choice now but to wait until the pain gets too bad again, and go to emerge and hope there is something that can be done.

I cannot say enough great things about having my hernia surgery at Shouldice. I was a patient before they had to shut down all surgeries. They were re-assigning the nurses to other duties to help with the 3rd wave of COVID. I was treated with the utmost respect and consideration despite the immense stress they must have been under. Everything people have written about before are true - the food is excellent, the grounds are fantastic, the facilities are top-notch, the COVID screening is excellent and the result of the surgery is exactly as describe to me. However, the special part for me will always be the people working there. I could never do what they do, under that kind of pressure and for that I will always be grateful.

Its unbelievably scary how many people wake up during operation and the surgeon just screams and pushes you down holding you to finish what he started. Jesus christ this clinic sounds like something out of a horror movie. I have a hernia that needs to be surgically corrected I thought this was the place. Ummmm no thank you...

Biggest mistake of my life. I wish I had never heard of this place and just gone to a real hospital with a modern procedure.

just had my hernia operation done Doctors and nurses were awesome

I had a hernia operation at Shouldice Hospital recently and I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the entire medical and non-medical staff of Shouldice. My doctor was Dr. Spencer whom I found to be very knowledgeable, confident, professional and experienced. Following his thorough pre-operation examination, he took the time to explain to me the procedures. The operation was carried out successfully and I felt little to no pain throughout the process. My stay in the hospital was pleasant as it felt like I was in a resort rather than a hospital. The environment was peaceful, the service was great, the nurses were alert, the food was good and the staff were very friendly. I was also very much impressed with the level of knowledge and professionalism of the administration and other non-medical staff about the work they do and services they provide to the patients. Overall, it was a great experience for me. Kudos to all of you.

Excellent surgeons,,loving nurses and healthy, delicious food! It's the best place to have a hernia repair done. I highly recommend this hospital over the public ones.

Worst customer service ever. Some lady by the name of Shaz. She actually said if you don’t like it go somewhere else. Terrible.

Huda Azeez

The doctor is great at what he does and the hospital is nice looking too but the nurses were the most pretentious and unhelpful nurses. So, I got out as fast as I could after surgery.

Daryll O'Keefe

Shouldice Hospital met all my expectations. I had heard that I should take advantage of the close proximity to my home when diagnosed. I had no idea exactly how amazing the experience would be. Absolutely recommend as this facility performed the procedure and tended to my aftercare with such specific knowledge of my condition. This is all they do and they do it best.

I had hernia done at Shouldice hospital. Very attentive and professional from the moment you step in.

Just had my surgery a week ago and can't recommend it enough. My surgeon, although a little bristly, did an amazing job. The nurses were kind and caring and accommodating, but just firm enough when needed. The grounds were perfect and the recovery time so essential. The food was great too and though I don't love sharing a room with someone, that is more a personal preference. They were very clear with what to expect as well, in terms of both how my time there would be and recovery times. If you have a hernia, do not hesitate to go to Shouldice. You'll be glad you did.

Knowledgeable doctors and hospital is known around the world.

I never met a bunch of doctors who contradict each other and are very unprofessional. They only want to do easy cases. They talk a lot and do nothing.

I had bilateral hernia surgeries repaired at Shouldice less than 3 weeks ago (Aug 24 & 26 respectively), and I am beyond happy and satisfied with the results. It's been 16 days since I left the hospital and I can say that I am almost fully recovered. I can run, workout and do my normal life. Everything from check-in to check-out was great. The whole staff, nurses, doctors and everyone involved was attentive, courteous and professional even when they were notoriously busy. I was lucky enough to have Dr. Oscar Henao do both surgeries, whose knowledge and patience explaining the procedure made me feel very comfortable. His bedside manners are also fantastic. Special shout out to the nurses who were always there to help and graciously put up with everything including some not-so-good attitude from a few patients. I cannot speak enough good things about them! The property is beautiful, the building could use an update but still is a very comfortable, cozy and relaxing setting. The ORs and the waiting area at the OR are top-notch, loved having a reclining chair and warming blankets while you wait to go to surgery. The food! the food is simply amazing, so much so that one has to be careful not to indulge too much. Also amazing, friendly and happy kitchen staff. The pain is very real the first days after each surgery but improves notoriously day by day. The doctor prepares you for it (it wouldn't be realistic to expect no pain if you think about it) but 100% manageable with painkillers the first couple nights and Tylenol during the day. I stopped taking even Tylenol after a week. The nurses are always there to help you with pain management. One suggestion: bring your own pillow, the hospital pillows are not bad, but hey, they're hospital pillows. Having your own makes a difference, especially those first nights after the surgery when you're really uncomfortable. The surgery is done with local anesthesia, so I dozed out a couple times during each 45 min surgery (best naps ever!). Yes, you can hear the doctor and his team talk throughout your surgery, and you feel they're working on you but I had absolutely no pain whatsoever throughout both procedures. Once they're done you get off the table with some help and to a wheel chair and a nurse takes you to your room where you have to wait 4-5 hours for the anesthesia to pass (pro tip: drink TONS of water after the surgery, helps you a ton) once it's done the nurse will help you get of the bed and go for a supervised short walk just to make sure you're good to start moving by yourself. The place, doctors and all the staff are fantastic! I 100% recommend Shouldice.

My husband just had his hernia done at this hospital and he is very happy with the whole process. He is home, recovering and doing very well. The staff, the doctor and the food was amazing. Strongly recommend them!

TERRIBLE PATIENT CARE! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO THERE: My 21 year old daughter went in for hernia repair. During surgery, she actually woke up twice! The second time was when they were stapling her incision shut and the surgeon was angry that she was moving! He yelled at the nurses to hold her down (which they did) because she was writhing in pain. You would think that such an experienced medical facility as this would have considered what to do in those cases before finding themselves literally holding down a patient to finish a surgery – shouldn't they have stopped to administer more anesthetic before continuing???? I guess their profits from keeping the production line moving outweighed any form of compassion they would have for a patient - that is just horrible! Maybe it was because they didn't even bother giving her a sleeping pill in pre-op as they had done with all of the other patients, therefore leaving her not fully sedated for surgery. Hmmm, I wonder who got that sleeping pill because it sure wasn't the patient. Next, despite advising them during the consult and on surgery day that there was a strong family history of being unable to take any opioid pain killers (father, mother, grandmother) they should have had a backup plan for post-op pain relief in case she had a reaction too. Well, they gave her oxycodin anyways and just like the rest of her immediate family, she experienced dysphoria and got absolutely no pain relief whatsoever. When she advised the nurses that the pain meds were not working at all, they just told her to wait a few hours until the next scheduled dose rather than them addressing the problem of the reaction (what absolute idiots!!!) Still, the nurses then made her get up to go eat like the other patients, but she collapsed and passed out in a hallway. Then the nurses gave her heak for passing out (after they had just ordered her to get up)!!!! This sort of nonsense would not fly for one second in a public hospital - heads would roll and people would be fired for such behaviour! I got involved - asked the head of patient care if he could please reach the doctor to switch her pain meds to a non-narcotic base such as Torridol. Instead, he went up to her room.... and you are NOT going to believe this.... he asked my daughter loudly in front of everyone if she would like some more dessert!!!???? What does it take for these people to take action on a medication reaction????? Needless to say, as soon as I could get there, I met with the head nurse on duty and literally begged her to call any doctor on duty and ask to switch pain meds. Finally, a day and a half of terrible pain followed by collapsing and outrageous patronizing, the meds were changed to Torridol and - low and behold - she then got pain relief rather quickly. But what it took just for them to treat her properly was utterly beyond reason. My daughter is actually too terrified to even go back for the 1 year follow up because of how she was literally tortured there. IT'S TIME FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO PUT SOME CHECKS AND BALANCES ON THIS FACILITY AND ITS WORKERS !!!!

Avoid Dr. Slater I had my surgery done this past week. Overall, a mediocre experience. The staff are overworked and the place clearly needs an upgrade in equipment. It truly seems that it is more for profit than anything else now. If I were to return, I would refuse to be treated again by Slater. This man is completely unprofessional. Screams at everyone like he is a spoiled child - including patients like myself while on the operating table. Rushes me in (I was the last of the day - get this: if you are young and healthy, youre going last in the day because they specifically do oldest first. I was 6th for this surgeon.), while I had some concerns and aggressively tells me to be quiet. Then, midway through surgery starts talking about game of thrones to his colleagues. Once he notices im awake and listening he starts to scream again - blaming ME for being awake. Even going so far to accuse me of trying to ‘fight’ the anesthesia. They then jacked up the amount they gave me so I stopped breathing naturally and they had to prompt me to breathe. All because this guy wanted me to be ‘asleep’ for a local anesthesia. Isnt that the point of this method? I caught you unfocused on your job - and others deserve to know. I later asked one of the nurses about this guy and he is known to act like this. After reading other reviews about this same individual, and hearing this backed up by staff - it is shocking to me that Shouldice would risk its reputation with an individual like this. Complete and utter negligence with no duty or care to value the lives people put at his mercy daily. I want this review to be a warning to anyone going to the clinic. Request to stay as far from this guy as possible. He is a poisonous person. If there are any complications with my surgery - you will be sure to hear from me further.

I would highly recommend the Shouldice hospital for a hernia repair. Great staff, and the food was excellent. They kept me in the loop at all times, and were very helpful and supportive.

Not impressed with the walk in clinic. No appointments, drove in from Hamilton and was there at 10am...left at 2:45pm as i had another appointment and still had not seen a Dr. and was told it could be another hour at least. Sitting waiting for 6 hours? Just wow.

I recently had my surgery at Shouldice on Feb. 5th. I wish I could give higher than 5 stars. From the moment I drove onto the property I could feel that the energy of this place was awesome. Every member of the staff from the cleaners right up to the surgeons, the service and help was absolutely incredible. Kind, caring and professional people always giving the greatest of service. This is how hospitals should be run. This was my first surgery and was happy it was here. Every aspect of the journey at Shouldice was tops and first class. Even great food and snacks here. No hospital food here. Thank you for this experience.

Waited over 5 hours to see the doctor only to be told I need to lose 20lbs before they would do the surgery. Im not even really over weight and workout 3-4 times a week at the gym. Thats the weight I was like 33yrs ago in my early 20s. The people walking around their that just had the surgery or getting it done, look like they are Anorexia. Wow they cherry pick the easiest and simplest patients to operate on. So these doctors must of never really been operating on challenging patients, scary. Went home and got booked at my local hospital in Sarnia, Ontario to do the surgery the following week. Waste of time for the average Joe.

Easily the best place for hernia repair, a very nice facility, surrounded by calm, serene and beautifully-kept lawns. The staff is very polite and ensure that your stay is nice. Oh and very nice food+snacks.

Horrible experience. Terrible staff. Asked multiple times post surgery for my records and they did not forward them. Surgery was a nightmare, I was awake during the surgery and felt intense pain. Staff afterwards were awful. No pain management and no care, I left early and saw my own doctor. Out dated facilities. They pump through as many people as they can each day like a factory. I am scarred from the experience and I am reminded every time I look at my stomach. I do not recommend this "hospital" to anyone!

The best hospital from my experience. one time do it never go back again.

Cherif S

Exceptional care on all levels. From receptionist to surgeon, all staff were very kind and caring. The nursing safe are a true credit to the profession. Very grateful for the care provided by Dr. Uy and the other physicians and support staff in the OR. Truly exceptional.

Shouldice Hospital is the world's best non mesh hernia repair hospital. It has its own medical technique as known as "Shouldice Repair". Its surgeons never implant the mesh. It is Canada's only private hospital. Many foreigners come to Shouldice Hospital from around the world. Shouldice hospital has incredible gardens, grass fields and alot of trees. This hospital is now under alot of renovations. It will open its new operating rooms on the ground level soon. They are now under a construction. The old operating rooms (50ish oldie goldie style) are green painted in the basement will be closed down for good. All beds are replaced brand new since last Christmas. The meals at Shouldice are very good than any other hospital. It will make you feel like spending your holidays at the resort out of the city. You won't feel like being at the hospital. The surgeons and nurses are the best. Of course there are few negative things. I don't like plastic pillows and public parking $10 per day. There is no TV in a patient's semi-private room because it encourages patients to walk to the TV lounge for exercising. It charges $255 per day for staying at the hospital and meals. OHIP does not cover those costs but except surgery costs. You need work benefits insurance for covering the costs. This hospital offers flexible financial plan for Ontario residents who need.

My right side hernia operation was on 16/12/20 ,one year anniversary coming up soon. My experience In the Shouldice Hospital was one of the best. From the beginning to the end from the nurses to doctors and everyone else that involved. The place was super clean the, food was good.My Surgery went better than I thought, I was happy when I woke up in my room. The first couple of days were uncomfortable like most operation but after this was speedy recovery. On the 13 days went snow kiting on lake Simco. Right now I feel grate like I have never had any operation at all. I’m 76 , it was my first surgery ever. I guess I’m one of the lucky ones. I might need a second hernia operation on my right side sometime. I have more confidence to do it again. I strongly recommend to anyone to go to Shouldice Hospital . Thanks you Karoly Chepregi

Ridiculously rude receptionist. Was referred here by my family doctor for hernias. It was diagnosed using ultrasound because I was experiencing pain in that area. They said I need a letter from my doctor saying you can feel the hernia as they don't consider ultrasound reliable, which my family doctor and myself were both dumb founded as you cannot feel every hernia. I call to ask them well what if the specialist they are sending me to also confirms I have a hernia then will they see me. She says "no, we are a special clinic and we are the best at what we do. If we can't feel it, we won't touch you." So I respond with, well what am I supposed to do then? She said "Go to another hospital". I'm pretty sure it is illegal to deny medical treatment to someone who has been diagnosed by 2 different physicians of a condition. Don't bother being referred here unless the hernia is bulging 7" out of your body. I have filed a complaint with OHIP and PatientsCanada as I am sure being denied medical treatment that is paid for by OHIP is illegal.

I heard they were the best around, the best in the world. I had surgery last week. They are very attentive and look after you. When you go down for surgery, if you are feeling any discomfort, be sure to let them know and them will up your meds as the surgery only requires a local. The nurses on the day staff and night staff are awesome as well. They will help make your stay comfortable. You will feel uncomfortable after the surgery for as few as three days to as many as 6 days. I started to feel my best on the sixth day. They check on you each day and provide exercise to get you going. They have several common areas, but if you are like me, you may just want to be by yourself for some time so bring an iPad full of movies to help pass the time. If you have allergies, be sure to bring Clariton or similar as you will not want to sneeze after surgery. Ear plugs are also a good thing in case your room mate snores. Read the material they give you. It will put you at ease and explain everything. DOn't google anything before or after surgery as you will only find the worst stuff ;)

Helena Yakovlev Golani

Very beautiful hospital. The surgeon Dr. Kalman was very professional, thoughtful and generous with his explanations. He did a great job! He took the time to check everything and came after the surgery to ask how I feel. He was exceptional. Nurses mostly were nice. Diana and another lady were very kind but Deb was abrupt, rude and complained all the time which was extremely unpleasant. It costs nothing to be kind and empathetic. Suggestions: clean rooms and change bed sheets more than once a week. The floor in toilet was sticky. When complained, they cleaned very reluctantly. Garbage bin needs cleaning every day. Covid didn't go anywhere. Rooms are very outdated and need urgent update. Be aware that it is only One public shower for men and women. It was a big turnoff for most women on the floor. Something needs to be done about it. Food was exceptional. Very tasty and generous.

I came to Shouldice from the US, and paid out of pocket, because I was concerned about surgical mesh being used for my inguinal hernia repair. In the US, about 99.99% of general surgeons use surgical mesh. Reading up on all of the risks associated with surgical mesh, the product recalls, and lawsuits, I didn't want to take the chance, however small, that I would experience pain and complications for the rest of my life. In Shouldice, they repair the vast majority of hernias using sutures, using mesh in only very, very rare cases. The surgery went perfectly (my first ever surgery, so I was a bit nervous). The doctors, nurses, and staff are amazing. The hospital grounds are gorgeous, and the food is restaurant quality. If the hernia on my other side ever gets worse, I will return to Shouldice in a heartbeat!

I was truly impressed with your nice facility and the caring staff and friendly attitude and smile. Both doctors & nurses as well as all hospital staff caring and concerned, friendly while maintaining professional and efficient standards of service. I was so very thankful for the excellent care I received at Shouldice hospital. My special gratitudes to Dr. Hal, Ms. Monir “truly an angel”, Ms. Megan & Soheila, can’t thank you enough for all you’ve done for me to make me feel at home. God bless you all, wishing you all, the very best for many many years to come. Sincerely; Amir A. Ohadi

Best medical experience I've had. This is where you have to go to have your hernia repaired. My right inguinal hernia was repaired around lunch time and I was up and walking with no serious discomfort or complications by dinner. Amazing experience! Fantastic surgeon! The nurses great! The grounds are a beautiful ambiance to rest and heal, a lovely place to walk around post-surgery. The food was fabulous. All around a positive experience that I would highly recommend! Thank you so much.

Recently had a hernia operation done at Shouldice and want to say my experience with the hospital, surgery, and staff were all great! Came from out of province and they were very helpful with getting me set up to stay there. The kitchen made great accommodations for my dietary needs and would recommend to anyone who has a surgery and has the ability to pay for surgery to go here!

Bill.Gerri Church

Very well organized and top quality surgeons. They only do hernia operations and they do 800 procedures a month. They have more experience doing hernia surgery than any place in the world.. Their meals are great. You will meet other patients from all over Canada and United States. They do not use mesh to repair your hernia. Highly recommend Shouldice.

I am so saddened. I paid out of my pocket to have them fix my hernia to have it done right because its extremely important to my job/ income. They hacked me. Now trying to find out how to get it fixed and doctors gasp every time. Looks like it was done in a back alley. They said to me don't worry you are in good hands. Then I woke up with a night slice above belly button and huge claps squeezing my skin. Its horrific.????

I’ve never had the opportunity to visit as a patient. Their reputation proceeds themselves as they are so nice in person and gracious with their beautiful campus. The most beautiful hospital grounds that remind me of Halliburton, Ontario. .

Hello, I’ve heard great things about this place. I had a friend go here to have mesh removed and repaired. He couldn’t say enough about this place. I, myself have mesh from years ago and at some point I’m hoping I can come here for my repairs. Also, I presently have an umbilical hernia that will need repair when it gets bigger but my friend told me this place is very particular about their patients weight so I’m wondering, what do I have to roughly weigh first, in order to have surgery there?? I’m 5’4”. I know this is not a consultation and that to have an accurate ideal weight told to me would only be done during one but honestly, roughly what would be the weight range for my height? Thank you.

Mike Terreberry

Best surgeons and nurses and don't forget the food staff. I can't thank you all enough.

So I went here for a hernia repair and wanted to give others what to expect: You'll be met by a nurse at the door to screen for COVID symptoms. Check in and they will ask for your negative results for your COVID test. You will then wait in a large waiting room with all your luggage. They have great big shelves to the side for your luggage and bags. You will be given a complimentary lunch from the small bistro they have there. As well you can purchase snacks for any visitors. A nurse will do your vitals and weight. They will go over a few things in your medial record. You will get assigned a room and given a patient bracelet to state you name and your room number. If you have any food allergies you'll get a green bracelet that shows your allergy. You will wait to see a General Practitioner who will go over everything about you medical history and medication to ensure all their paper work is in order. They are very through. If you have any medical allergies they will give you a red band so that any Staff can see it. You will then go to another waiting room and will wait for your surgeon. They will look at your hernia and discuss it and explain the whole procedure. You will go to the nursing station on your floor and they will direct you to your room and show you all the room amenities. You will get your own night stand, your own closet and your own drawer at the sink by the bathroom. The room has a bathroom with it's own door and a sink that is shared and our in the open. All the rooms are semi-private and have a curtain down the middle for privacy. There is one outlet plug you can use by your nightstand as the bed is plugged into the other one. There is another plug on the wall at the foot of your bed. There are no locks and no way to lock up your belongings so be aware not to bring anything expensive with you. There is a main Livingroom by the nurses station that has lots of couches and chairs, and there is even a side room with a huge TV (like 60") and cable so you won't miss any important games or shows. There is a shelf with some games, books and cards. There is a large balcony to get fresh air and be outside. There is another room to the side on my floor that had a pool table. On each floor there are 2 shared showers. In the showers are a huge sturdy sit down bench. A hand wand for showing as well as a shower head. The wand has a really long hose on it making it really easy to shower after your surgery as you can't take full showers for a week after your repair. There is some standard soap in a wall pump in the shower wall. Towels and face cloths are provided. There is a café on the basement floor where you have your meals. On this floor there is a full piano and 2 acoustic guitars, and a hand shuffleboard board table. That's about the lay of the land for you first day and where you will be staying. The day of your surgery you will get up and a nurse will shave your surgery area. You will be given a gown and pants to wear until it's your time for surgery. A nurse will come get you from your floor and give you booties and take you down to the basement and put you in a small waiting room with a warming blanket with a nice big TV to watch. You'll be taken to your OR room. it looks totally updated and pristine white. The anesthesiologist will put in an IV and some good drugs and you'll start to get tired and fall asleep. You'll wake up in your room, pretty groggy form the drugs, you'll have Lunch and dinner in your room. You will be mobile quite quickly. Then it's just rest and relaxation, the day after your surgery you get half the staples removed, then the next day the rest of the staples are removed and starry tape is used. There is also a registered massage therapist onsite. Things to bring you didn't think about: Ear plugs (people snore), wet wipes (poor mans shower), headphones, charger, laptop (free wifi, very fast) I cannot recommend this place enough if you have a hernia they do surgery right and don't just load you up with narcotics, they manage the pain with Toradol and Tylenol!

So, my wife asked me where my father went almost 40 years ago. I told her Shouldice. Then I read the reviews. It's extremely hard to believe. The reason we went was that he had A-fib and they did not use anesthesia...so al these folks talking about waking up alarms me. It was the smoothest thing I've ever seen. When I graduated a friend had already had two procedures. I referred him there. They did ask him to lose I think about 10 pounds. He was fortunate that we were young and it was easy. Now 40 years later he has not had to have a repeat surgery. I hope the system has not changed as so many of the reviews report. We all have staff that bothers patients. But there are answers to most of the comments. I'd love to know if these issues were resolved.

Great hospital for hernia surgery. Expert surgeons. Good staff. Very comfortable setting - aimed at getting you to move right away to help with healing. The decor is a little old, but that's irrelevant. The food was great.

Marion Hart

I was at Shouldice yesterday and had a very bad experience. The doctor told me my hernia was too small in his opinion, to operate and my pain was not his problem. This is the opposite of what my Gastro Internist, who I have been seeing for four years told me when she examined me.She was sure a hernia surgery would help me with all the pain I have had the last eight weeks.I will seek a second opinion. This doctor had no sympathy and was not a gentleman,I will never go back there.

My experience at Shouldice Hospital was an amazing one, I was well taken care of, the hospitality, and the staff were very nice, the room was well kept and comfortable, the food was a lot, not complaining.. The other patients were friendly we've exchanged how we felt during conversations amongst each other, but overall I would recommend anyone to to Shouldice Hospital if necessary, I guarantee you that your time there will be well spent..

This is THE place to go to for hernia repair. Dr. Uy (I hope I spelt her name right) was my surgeon and she was amazing. Dr. Spencer and Dr. Uy, have the best bedside manners I've ever experienced. They're absolutely wonderful. The nursing staff and are all so amazing and they take such good care of you. A special shoutout to Chef Herbert and all the amazing kitchen staff, thank you for feeding us so well. If you have a hernia, this is the ONLY place to consider. Thank you so much!

Excellent hospital. Beautiful grounds for the middle of November. The staff and food are the best. The surgery is 100 %. Would highly recommend for hernia operations.

Very professional and good medical treatment for people who suffer from Hernia problems (specifically this problem). They are experts in this field, and we're not talking in Canada, but world wide. I met people from the west cost, US and even Europe who comes to get their treatment there, because they are much better than the usual treatment in regular hospitals. In Shauldise they use a different technique than the hospital's one - mesh, which is much better, especially in terms of healing process. We should be proud to have such a place in Ontario.

Excellent place to go for any type of hernia surgery, nice nurses, doctors & employees. Special thanks to Persian doctors & nurses who work there specially Mrs.Monir who is really nice & kind. God bless you all.

Shouldice Hospital is by far THE BEST health institution I have ever dealt with. Not only they are the best at what they do, fix hernias, but also how they treat their patients, how clean and well organized this place is. Excellent food and service as well. And all of that with fewer staff than regular hospitals. I don't wish anyone to have a hernia problem, but if you do this is the place to go.

nasim alishahinorani

Very clean hospital with very nice, kind and helpful nurses and staff. Monir was one of the nurses who was very caring and kind while my dad had a surgery and stayed there for 3nights.

perfect place for hernia operation. ***** staff & doctors and ***** treatment get operate for hernia and forget it!!!!!

Went to the Shouldice clinic with a failed hernia repair and pain radiating up from groin repair to right breast. Doctor told me I had a groin pull. Despite being unable to explain any of my symptoms with it and despite having 0 symptoms of a groin pull. Was kind though as he explained there was nothing wrong with me and rest would make it better. He was unable to explain why rest was making it worse. Would not advise if you have hernia edge case to go to this place, you will wait 7 hours to be discovered. They have blinders on for hernia as they work on making profit rather than healing. 0/5 stars, a veterinary doctor would be a better bet if you are in my case.

Tammy Mansfield

I had an excellent experience having hernia surgery at Shouldice Hospital. The Doctors were all friendly and my surgeon did a great job making me feel comfortable. I feel blessed to have been treated at this hospital. I was treated like a queen for 4 days! We were served delicious meals and snacks by ladies who were always smiling. My roommate was so much fun, and it seemed they put everyone with someone they would like. I made some great new friends on the third floor, and some tennis fans from the second floor. I miss you all already! Take care. Reunion is a must! Thank you to the wonderful nurses, Rachel, Rhonda, Judy and nurses downstairs in the OR you are all wonderful people. If you need hernia surgery do not hesitate. Call Shouldice. You will be happy you did. Oh, and if they tell you to lose weight, just do it. You will thank them after it's accomplished.

Derrick Goobie

just spent 4 days at Shouldice, the staff, the food, the service , the grounds were all fantastic, a very pleasurable experience

Gregory Halmay

This is the greatest hospital I have ever been to. This ought to be a standard for hospitals. My experience was fantastic. The support from other residence all having hernia operations, to the staff and being in a resort atmosphere was great. I asked for Vegan options and was so pleased to have such good food. The right hand knows what the left hand is doing at Shouldice. Having such beautiful surroundings there is a sense that I was at a Spiritual hospital. I call this happy healing. I did not want to leave.

Jeff Kahane

If you need hernia surgery, I would strongly recommend this place. They are known as a world leader in hernia repair. You can get in very quickly and even if you are from out of province (but Canadian) most of the costs are covered. They are very efficient and the grounds are stunning. HINT: I did not love the food but uber eats delivers.

Ivan Johnston

Surgery went ok on the right side but horribly wrong on the left side. There was a sharp pain during surgery and I shouted but the surgeon yelled at me and pushed me back down. He either cut or sutured into a nerve bundle, I think. Recovery was terrible and not like any of the other patients around me. Shouldice staff did nothing. When I brought it to their attention, there was an indifferent attitude towards my situation. Believe me, they don’t want to know you if it goes wrong. I recently went back to see them again (third visit over several years) to tell them about the pain. After waiting for a very long time in their main waiting room, the doctor that’s assigned to see you with your problem made me wait again unnecessarily outside his office. You could see him wandering around and only came out to get me when he overheard another patient and myself discussing our problems with the surgery and service. When describing my problems, he had a smirk on his face. I had to stop and ask what’s so f’n funny about the chronic aching and numbness that I’ve had since surgery years ago. There’s never any follow up, no solid advice, no nothing. Honestly, run away from this place! They lost my file as well. They had basic notes but nothing to do with the surgical notes....convenient for them. Spin the wheel if you go here. If it works, you win. If it doesn’t, you’re on your own. Any decent hospital will be able to do this surgery and also provide accountability. Why this place gets away with what they do is beyond me.

Ryan Bridgeman

As nervous as I was to get my first topical surgery, the nurses, surgeons and other staff reassured me many times that everything was going to be okay. The Shouldice staff are the people you need to trust when you're a nervous wreck like me, lol. During surgery, I didn't feel much and it wasn't painful. It felt like it was over in no time. Additionally, the property is beautiful, staff was kind and professional, the food was delicious and healthy and much more. The attention you receive on the road to recovery is superior. I recommend everyone who needs hernia repair to trust Shouldice to take care of you to the fullest.

Peter L

Great experience from check in to check out. Dr Hall, the nurses, PSWs, the dining staff were all excellent. No mesh used here. Dr Hall checked on me each day. Will be back to have my other side done if and when it gets worse.

Tom Roy

This is more of a question, rather than a review. Is the 'Shouldice procedure' possible on a patient who already has a mesh put in to repair an inguinal hernia on one side. Now, there is a hernia on the other side, and we are looking at Shouldice. But once a patient has already had a hernia operqtion with a mesh put in (laparoscopically), is the open Shouldice surgery possible on the on the other side?

Lovely staff, park like grounds, serene quiet place to heal, double check with nurses to make sure they get your dose correct because they skipped a med by accident but i caught it anyhow but no big deal because the med was not crucial to my health or recovery, surgery had zero complications, food is run of the mill ordinary healthy easy to digest meals, need to pay for parking which is crazy because you are already paying extra out of pocket for having surgery here.

Brock Weinberger

Extremely impressed with my stay at Shouldice. The staff are friendly and competent. The building and my room were clean and well equiped. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The food is of good quality, and pretty flavorful for a clinic. The procedure itself went smoothly, and though the recovery isn't fun by any stretch, they did a good job of minimizing my discomfort. Really can't say enough positive things about my stay at Shouldice. Thank you guys!

B Mundy

Staffing is great. But as someone who suffers massive panic attacks. This place is not for me. Too many unknown variables. Being left in a state of limbo not knowing when your surgery is, at the same time not being able to drink or eat in an unknown time frame to me is ridiculous. And when asking questions I get the same answer, "I'm not sure". Well I'm sure this place is great for most. And I will not condemn the facility. Its probably great for most. Just not me. Had my surgery and I will say the surgery team is absolutely stellar.

Catalin Oprean

Fantastic experience. This is an amazing hospital with high standards. Had my surgery done and stayed 4 nights at Shouldice Hospital. Every person on staff was friendly and a pleasure to meet. The Nurses and Surgeons are knowledgeable and help every step of the process. The food is amazing. Great choices even if you have any allergies. The grounds are always clean and well kept. Wifi is OK. Clean rooms and nice size. Glad I made the choice to have the surgery done here.

Gellert Berenyi

I recently had an inguinal hernia fixed at Shouldice... I can say with confidence this hospital is like no other I've ever seen. The hospital is on a piece of land that used to be a golf course; nothing like waking up to see a beautiful scenery of trees covered in snow! The inside of the facility is something I would compare to a hotel; the rooms are generic in themselves but the lounge areas, the programs in place and the care of the staff are top notch. They do encourage you to get walking after surgery and the pain meds are readily available. The doctors are very friendly and knowledgeable, and they did a great job not just on me but on everyone else I met. I will recommend Shouldice to anyone I know who is in need of hernia repair!

A. Ivey

I wouldn't go to this place for hernia surgery Just remember if you get in......!!!! American first!!!!!!! As this is the way they do business. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Customer service on the phone was horrible.

Had surgery here this past summer, surgery went well, needed more sedation. Healed quickly, and discharged myself just over a day early. I discharged myself because the carpets grossed me out. Carpets in a hospital, gross! Their style also indicated that they had been there from at least the early 1980s. Imagine all the "discharge" on them, i.e. vomit, urine, food, etc... The food was terrible. Anyone who says Shouldice food is good, is lying, or has extremely low standards in food served to them... I ordered takeouts from the local Thornhill Square mall. Visiting hours were also very limited. Gave it 4 stars, because my surgery went well. Other areas need improvement as stated above. :)

I had my hernia done last week and happy that I chose Shouldice. All the staff members were polite, attentive and professional providing the optimal conditions for full & fast recovery. Food is delicious, the facilities are clean and well maintained, the garden is gorgeous (how can you not heal with such a view?). A big shout out to my surgeon, Dr. Hall for being patient and for making sure I understand the procedure and the recovery process.

Great Douglas

Disappointed with the doctor's overall approach. Complete waste of time. Was made to feel like I was wasting his time. Pretty much told me my hernia isn't bad enough for surgery despite the pain I was feeling.

Cory Slykerman

Despite my wife being a Registered Nurse, I was still forced to expose myself to a female receptionist upon check-in to prove that shaving had been completed. Does my personal privacy mean nothing? Could they not have offered a male nurse to check? Or simply believe me? Unnecessarily humiliated...

Mark Berg

Had surgery there. Nurses were good. Many different Dr's. They are known worldwide and they don't use the standard mesh in surgery as they have their own technique. They use very fine metal wire to stitch you. (not an issue in airports) Yes the food is NOT typical hospital food and is good. It almost feels like you are at a hotel. NIce dining room setting. Know a couple of people there at same time who a while after had some discomfort and issues and went to be checked. They were told they were fine. I going back as well months after as i am having discomfort. Hopefully wont have to be re operated on.

Keith Warden

Had my hernia operation here, everyone was very nice and I feel 110% better ever since The Doctors & staff are top notch I can't recommend this place enough

chris Godin

Just got home from this wonderful place. They definitely know what they are doing. All the staff were great and kept us medicated, just the right amount. Don't bother ever going anywhere else, avoid the mesh and get it done right, once. Also, great to meet other patients and tell war stories...

Jerry Pruden

Excellent staff, efficiency beyond belief. The atmosphere and surroundings were beautiful. Met and interacted with other patients who quickly became friends. Great food. I pray I never get another hernia but if I do I will be going back there no question about it. Thank you Shouldice for making this surgery entirely bearable.

I have had my surgery years ago. My experience then was satisfactory for what it was. They treat your situation like an assembly line instead of a patient. But they did do what they said they would do. My hernia was fixed. I later got another 4 hernia's. I contacted them to book an appointment and they scheduled me to come in to see a doctor. I was at the point of not being able to stand for more then minutes. So I came in quickly to see a doctor. I then noticed something on their questionnaire. This is your ____ time at our hospital. That is a scary realization that their questionnaire clearly states that you will be a repeat customer. Considering my 4 inch scar from the last visit, and I have seem the 6 inch scar other people had after their surgeries, I was not jumping up and down to have 4 hernias done at their place. But I did not know any better so I tried to book an appointment. They said they will call me for an appointment but it most likely will be in 4 months. And they wanted me to do them in 2 different sessions. I did some further research and I found a way to get all 4 done at the same time laparoscopicly. I was booked in within 2 weeks and was in and out in 1 day from Humber River Hospital. Honestly it wasn't the best experience, but I don't have any scars, my recovery time was 48 hours compared to the 6-8 weeks I was quoted at Shouldice. But the good thing is Shouldice hospital called me 4 months later to ask if I want to be scheduled in. Good thing I didn't wait.

Mujangga

They do NOT fix hiatal Hernias.

Clem H Maryse B

I had two surgeries the week of Nov 6th 2017, my left and right side hernias. After significant research I was convinced mesh wasn't for me and I have no regrets on visiting Shouldice for my repair. My thoughts were confirmed when I met several people there who had failed mesh repairs. They all said had they known about Shouldice they would have gone there first and avoided the mesh altogether. The facility is a bit dated but serves its purpose. The food is great and conversation comes easily with everyone since we're all there for similar reasons. Nursing staff are great and very attentive to everyone's needs. I was discharge on saturday and was back at work on Tuesday albeit moving a bit slower than normal. If you're thinking of hernia repair at Shouldice go for it, you won't regret it. Surgery is roughly 45mins to 1hr so it's over before you know it.

Great place for hernia repairs Excellent surgeons. Great and pleasant nurses and staff. Great food. Best place to be. ????????????????????

Lizz Hodgson

Shouldice is an impeccable hospital with amazing staff that produce fantastic results. You can expect to receive the best care for your hernia repair here.

Judy MacGillivary

My Aunt filled in a consult form. She was told that wasn’t good enough she would have to come to the clinic for an exam. No appointments so she came early for one of their “walk in” clinics. She waited 7 hours suffered through an exam and then was told anyone over 70 they won’t operate on! They knew her age from the form before she even agreed to come. They made her suffer through a 7 hour wait in horrible pain so they could scam OHIP for an exam fee. Worst kind of human beings this planet has seen. Hard no!

If you are given the choice, go to Shouldice for your hernia repair. I've been to many public hospitals for various surgeries, but I've never been to a private one before. My experience at Shouldice was very positive. While, the premises are a bit old fashion, they are quaint, quiet and exceptionally clean. But above everything else, it's the staff that makes the difference: administrative folks, nurses, cafeteria, massage therapist, technicians, surgeons... all of them are heartwarmingly humane and accommodating! For hospital food, you can hardly get better (I have food restrictions and they arranged special meals around them). As for the surgery, this too was also a very nice experience: the surgery rooms are state of the art (bring warm socks, it's bloody cold) and the staff is welcoming, I felt very safe. Moreover, not being kicked to the curb on the day of the surgery is a nice change of pace, and it gives you time to find your feet before you go home, which is nice.

Greg Guhbin

When I first attended the clinic for an assessment I was advised that I needed to lose 30 pounds. This seemed like a daunting task, but I followed the Shouldice Diet I was given and I lost 30 pounds in 3 months. I am now at the same weight I was in my 20s and I am grateful for this reset and all the positive benefits for my health and well being in general. My surgery was in early December of 2020 and I was very satisfied with all of the COVID precautions that the hospital is taking. My surgery was performed by Dr. Slater and I am extremely happy with the results. I appreciate how meticulous Dr. Slater was in closing my incision as I have very minimal scarring due to his extra attention and care. I also have to complement the rest of the staff here from admissions to nursing to food services. I had a positive experience with everyone I dealt with.

Can't say enough good things about Shouldice. Everything was well organized from my first step in the door to the meals (you won't leave lighter than when you arrived) to the surgery and care. I chose Shouldice rather than wait a year or more in BC and it was a great decision. Thanks to all the doctors and nurses!

DJ Forcefield

The best place in the world to get a hernia repaired. Great doctors, very pleasant staff and beautiful property and facilities. I call it the Hernia Hilton. Highly recommend.

Sas

I have a lot a pain where the incisions were done. They try to minimize everything but my bilateral inguinal hernia repairs done at Shouldice have caused me chronic pain for 3.5 years now. Watch a video on youtube to see how invasive the surgery is. Also I started screaming on the operating table 15 minutes before the end of the surgery. They had to give me morphine through the left hand. Not cool at all. Forget about the after care. It is almost non existent. They tell me the hernia is fixed. Any other issues go see you family doctor. I would not recommend this place. That is my opinion and how I see my experience. My pain could be cause by something else but nothing else was found through multiple MRIs and CT Scans.

Aaron Frank

So happy I chose Shouldice over my local hospital for quality of care and how the repair was done (no mesh was used, and fixed on multiple layers). Had my hernia repaired last Thursday. Great surgeon and nurses, and better than expected food. Also a unique experience to get to know your fellow patients. Many thanks!

I am very happy I decided to have my Hernia repair done at the Shouldice Hospital . The Doctors and all the staff are excellent! Thank you to my surgeon, Dr.Alexander, you did an excellent job! Thank you, Harry J Merkel

I wanted to share my experience with Shouldice clinic as an out of province patient as it may be helpful for others who are considering their options for hernia repair. I chose the Shouldice clinic after I was told that I would have to wait 7 months on average for a hernia surgery using provincial healthcare in British Columbia. My hernia had grown quickly and was quite debilitating. I was concerned about the cost of a private clinic, so I spoke with Shouldice as well as a few private clinics in Vancouver. Shouldice told me that my out of pocket expense would be about $3200, with about $2000 going to the surgery and $1200 for the four night stay in the clinic. They told me that provincial healthcare would refund up to 60% of the $2000 for the surgery. Local clinics in Vancouver were offering day surgery with a rate of about $5000. Shouldice was also able to get me in about a month after I first contacted them. I did some research and learned that Shouldice doesn't use mesh in their hernia repair, instead they stitch the tissue back together, which apparently is a much more reliable method with less possible future complications. I decided to go with Shouldice, as even with the cost of the return flight to Toronto, it was going to be less than getting it done in Vancouver. Once arriving at Shouldice, everything happens in a very orderly fashion. It certainly does have a bit of an assembly line feel to it, but when you just want a surgery done efficiently and properly, I'm not going to complain about a personal touch. The staff are professional and cordial, they explain the process to you and make sure you prepare accordingly. Coming out of the surgery, the first few days are quite painful. I've had mesh hernia repair in the past, and the recovery was faster and there was less discomfort post surgery. Four months later, my surgery appears to have been 100% successful. There is still some tightness in the area of the surgery, but I am able to do all the same activities as before without any discomfort. I received my medical refund from the province of BC this week, which amounted to about 50% of the cost of the surgery. In the end, I have absolutely no problem paying $2200 out of pocket for this procedure rather than wait seven months in a crippled state. I also think the Shouldice surgery is better than I would have received through provincial healthcare. The food at Shouldice was quite good, they certainly don't let you go hungry. The building is a little dated, but there's really nothing wrong with it. The rooms are comfortable and there are plenty of areas to lounge around. I loved the fact that they had a few acoustic guitars and a piano downstairs. The grounds outside are quite nice, although a little chilly in November. I would highly recommend Shouldice to anyone local or out of province who doesn't want to wait months for a hernia surgery through provincial healthcare or who is looking to have their repair done in a more medically progressive manner. Hopefully I never have to go back!

Omid Ghiassi

Great place, very caring and professional, a huge thanks to doctor alxander and monir (nurce)recommend to everyone has hernia problem

This place is an absolute sham. 1 year since my inguinal hernia surgery and the pain is worse than ever. been back 3 times and they say the hernia is fixed, take advil for pain. I've quit smoking, exercise everyday and even tried physiotherapy. I am by no means overweight either. I would sue this place if I could. Save yourself the 10 hour wait and bullsh*t MANDATORY 4 day stay and go to a normal hospital where your recovery will be complete in 2 weeks. This so-called "hospital" has more or less ruined my life.

mcduff

For profit facility that has become rundown and not willing to help patients that are not a simple solution. Claim great recovery statistics then cherry pick patients across the province. Not recommended.

Excellent service and care

I would like to thank everyone for making my stay at Shouldice a relaxing one. This is a first rate hospital and everyone was polite and professional. From the first person to the last person I came in contact with showed the same care and compassion to all my needs. I would like to thank Dr. Szasz, he was very knowledgeable, confident, experienced and professional. Right from the start of my surgery to my last day there he would spend the time to answer any of my questions to set me at ease. He is a great surgeon and a nice person. He is a great ambassador to your staff. Thank You

What a botched surgery. I phoned a while later to see if they could fix it, I was told the Dr. no longer worked there and they wouldnt do anything. Then they had the audacity to phone a year later and ask how everything is going. I should have sued.

Henry Charles

Honestly disappointed with how I was treated as a potential patient. The Receptionist I was on the phone with had an extremely rude tone with me right off the start. I had some general questions and inquiries about my surgery and fees/ insurance and I felt talked down to. They were very short with me and consistently tried to beat me to my question with an answer not even letting me finish! Then still failed to answer what my actual question was. Not a welcoming feeling, especially for a young adult trying to get his hernia fixed and figured out on his own.

Bill LeBlanc

I wrote this letter to Shouldice and I meant every word Dear Staff I am sure there is a stack of letters to the ceiling telling you what a wonderful experience and service you provide, please add this one to the pile. I cannot express how well the interactions with the staff and doctors instilled confidence and ease to my visit and how everything you projected for my recovery has come to pass. Although I couldn't find the chef on my last day I wanted to express to him or her, how great food was, and how often I heard the patients expressing the same. Especially would thank the 3rd floor nurses!! What wonderful care you provide. Thanks Bill

Mitchell Fasken

I had may surgery done this past Tuesday. I was skeptical about the process but based on the speed of my recovery and the lack of discomfort, the Shouldice system works. Staff were friendly, reasonably attentive while very busy, but told you what you needed to know. Rooms were acceptable, food was great. The only suggestion I would make is if you are going for surgery, bring your own pillow. As I said, its only been 5 days since my surgery and I have very little discomfort. For this speed of recovery at 67, the work must be good. I would highly recommend going to Shouldice.

Joe Addeo

This is the only place to get your hernia operation done this place goes over and above your expectations it's like a resort it's a private hospital it's the best place people came from all over the world and leave happen

Phil Gellner

I had a thoroughly positive experience here. Too many times in hospitals I feel we are treated more as an inconvenience than a patient. Not here. I felt them to be thorough, friendly and caring. The food was great and the grounds are so relaxing. I would almost welcome another hernia.

Marsha Laurent

Walk-in clinic - Mondays are the busiest day for the walk-in clinic if you are only going for an assessment. If you can do it another day of the week, you are better off. I waited 7 hours to be assessed because Mondays are also the day they check patients in, and they were short 3 doctors. When I finally saw a doctor, they were really great. They know what they are doing there.

My name is Randy Frizzle and i was lucky to be healed by what i now know are the best doctors and nurses in the world. I heard from many people about the Shouldice experience. If you want to be taken care of and feel 200 percent confident that your hernia is being dealt with for life, than go to this hospital. The nurses, doctors and administration staff speak to you with a genuine care that makes you feel comfortable from the first walk in visit to the admission day straight thru till you are leaving and going home knowing that your hernia has been taken care of and that undeniably you made the right decision. Thank you Shouldice for taking what scared me to no end and changing that into a 4 day experience i will never forget. Randy Frizzle April 20th, 2016

After being diagnosed with a hernia, the Shouldice Hospital was at the top of my list. The entire staff during my stay were exceptional and I was treated with care and compassion. The Shouldice Hospital has given me the ability to get back to doing the things I couldn't do before. Thank you for everything!

I hate to contradict all these 5 star reviews but this is what happened to me. My operation was about 3 years ago. My surgeon was a rude completely unfriendly man, (Dr S.) who actually yelled at me while I was on the operating table but before I went under. Why? because my belly button was dirty. I couldn't clean that area properly because of the pain. The whole experience was surreal. The follow up was just as unpleasant. This doctor actually made me sick, he was so abusive. Other patients were treated this way as well and frankly we were all in shock. What a horrible nasty man. After 3 days I was released. At first I thought the operation was a success, until I started developing issues. My stomach was bulging out and I could not bring it down. I later found out that I had Diastasis. Which is a break down of the connective muscle tissue in the abdomen. The hospital denied that it was their fault (of course) I had never had this issue before. My operation was for an umbilical hernia. Since then I have been to many specialists about my stomach and nothing can be done. It was explained to me that the hernia operation is probably the cause and that not enough care was given during the procedure. The place is like a hernia factory. 10 patients brought down at a time. Given drugs and wheeled in to all be operated at once. Frightening to say the least. Before the experience at the Shouldice I was a completely fit and toned person. In great shape and now I have a huge bulging stomach that frankly has had a terrible negative impact on my life. This is a sincere review. If I could have taken legal action against the doctor who botched my operation and against the hospital I would have.

I had hernia surgery at Sholdice Hospital in May, 2019. My surgeon, Dr. Hodgkiss was excellent. He attended me in my room the day of and the following two days after my surgery to observe my progress and reassure me that the operation was a success. The nurses and PSWs were caring and thorough. The morning exercises were helpful. I did not opt for massage therapy but the people I spoke with found it helpful. The food was four star. The beautiful grounds encouraged most of us to walk outside. My recovery has been rapid. I was on the tennis court ten days after surgery. Thank you Sholdice!

Michael Murphy

I have had two surgeries done here. It was amazing experience. My roommate snuck out of the hospital and was exercising in a gym the next day. This is the best place in the world to have this surgery. I flew in from the USA. The place was filled with US doctors and other people who had done their research. I had my surgeries done over 10 years ago. The bonding experience is great, you can talk to all of the people who had their surgeries done before you have yours done. I actually had a great time, although it was not a vacation it sort of seemed like one.

On April 25, 2018 I flew from Victoria BC to Toronto. I stayed overnight in a hotel close to the the Shouldice Hospital. The next morning I was checked into the hospital. On the morning of the 27th I was taken to surgery. Two inguinal surgeries later I was back in my room. On Sunday the 29th I was back on a plane heading for Victoria. Thank you Shouldice for another success story.

I went there yesterday with my mom on referral by her family doctor. When we got there, there was a line up; we were 3rd in line. No problem, as the line moved fast. When we finally got into the foyer of the building, a nurse (Kelly) was there to greet us. She asked who the patient was and I said it was my mom. The nurse advised I had to wait outside and I said that I was there to interpret what the doctor has to say to my mom. She said no. My mom told her that if I wasn't allowed in, she would just leave and go home. I explained to nurse Kelly that I needed to explain to my mom what the doctor was saying because her English was not sufficient to understand medical terms that the doctor may say to her. Nurse Kelly, rolled her eyes and held her hand to her head and looked at me and told me to tell my mother not to be rude. I told her my mom was not being rude and was simply stating a fact that she would not go in without me. I then asked her if there was an interpreter in my moms native language and she ignored my question and just continued with the eye roll and asked my mom the covid screening questions. When it got to the last question, my mom didn't understand and looked at me (explains why I needed to be there to interpret). I looked at nurse Kelly and asked her to repeat the question to me. She repeated the question without looking at me and I answered no. She asked my mom to sign the form and walked off without explanation. When she returned she said she spoke to someone that I had to wait outside. So I told her fine, we are leaving. In addition, there was an individual who was ahead of us in line who also had someone there with him and both went in! So why couldn't I go in??? I do not appreciate nurse Kelly rolling her eyes at me and falsely accusing my mother of being rude when she herself was being rude to us with an attitude that needs to be adjusted. I would strongly encourage people not to visit this place - I'm sure there are other institutions that can do the same thing without the rudeness of staff. I would never return to this place, ever!

The secretaries lack professionalism. They don't know how to respond to patient inquiries and concerns respectfully as well as professionally. Specifically, that Becky is so rude on the phone.

This was the most pleasant hospital stay I’ve ever had in my 72 years of living. From the staff, the doctors, the fantastic “hospital” food, and the total package, it was A-1. Thanks to all there.

If your hernia isn't bulging out enough they will not operate on you at Shouldice. Even with a doctor referral and seeing a general surgeon and an imaging diagnosis they will not do your surgery. Most women that have hernia's in their groins do not bulge out so they won't do your surgery! They tell these women in pain that they don't need surgery and don't recognize their hernia's which isn't fair!!

2 years on and I feel great. Never had an issue, the incision is near impossible to see (ingual). Sure, the wait times are lengthy, as is the check in, but small price to pay for top class service.

One week post op and my femoral hernia repair (mesh free) done by Doctor Spencer is feeling great. Taking it easy with simple aerobics but I can easily feel full range of motion with mild discomfort(feels better every day), some mild numbness in a small area near the incision but I think that's to be expected. The Shouldice team are really top notch and make a not so fun operation as comfortable as it could possibly be. I would like to thank you all for you hard work and dedication. Do not be swayed by the bad reviews! I've been stuck in hospitals and now I've been stuck at Shouldice which is way better all things considered! I will say on one cautionary note to others. I smoked for 20 years but have quit since my operation. I developed pneumonia after this operation and I will attribute it to having surgery and continuing such a horrible habit through the process and then getting a cold from a family member. THIS IS A BAD IDEA! Getting mucus out of your lungs after having a hernia operation is a frightening experience! Never had pneumonia before and I never want it again. 1 month update * life Is normal. No pain or discomfort. Other than an incision scar you would have no idea I had any operation. Well done again! 6 month update: life is fantastic with my repaired hernia from shouldice! No complaints!

I call it the Shouldice Factory. I was in in mid April, 2019. The inanimate objects such as food, surroundings, furniture, rooms etc were fine, not exceptional (except the grounds around the building). The problem is the humans, particularly the medical staff. If being a professional these days in the medical realm includes showing an actual interest in the patient beyond the part of the body in trouble, this place fails. None of that sort of thing from any of the medical staff that I discerned. The only interaction I had with someone who cared was the correspondence person before I went in, who got me in 2 months ahead of schedule for which I am very thankful. My discharge, which I took as soon as allowed (after 48 hours from the operation), was cursory, a 5 second glance at the operation and handing me a lawyer’s release form. I read it and as nothing much happened as stated in it I didn’t sign it and just left and no one asked. I’d suggest you do the same. As it turned out there was a problem which would not have been discovered even if I stayed another 24 hours as it occurred below the wound, an area I would have thought a competent discharge exam would have included, but didn’t. Fortunately, the problem resolved itself within about 72 hours. It likely was caused by inadequate cleaning of the wound before being sewn up. Also, the handout about post discharge stuff was wholly inadequate. Considering that 98%of the patients must be men, and most of them by the conversations I heard pretty active, I would have thought the handout might have discussed suggested times for continuing activities like jogging, particular sports, swimming etc. Nothing but the merest pablum of information. Nor did it deal with problems such as I had. I still have a pencil like hard ridge vertically above the groin area which could last much longer I gather. This places needs a thorough shake up, however wonderful it thinks it’s procedure is. No reason it can’t keep offering the procedure with some actual caring about its clients.

One word, AMAZING experience. If you want to have your hernia taken care of by the best, look no further than Shouldice. The handful of poor reviews seen here can be seen at any other hospital and should not negatively impact the overall experience at Shouldice as it is a top notch facility. Had me second hernia repair here and can’t say enough good things. Thanks for all you do! Dr. Spencer, you are a top class surgeon and demonstrate ‘care’ to the fullest. Thank you!!!!!!!!

I had my hernia done last week and happy that I chose Shouldice.Excellent surgeons, Great nurses and healthy, delicious food! It's the Great place for hernia repaire. Dr. Hall is a trustworthy excellent surgeon . He checked my condition carefully before surgery and came to check my incision every day after surgery and told me the matters for attention. Mr. Yang, the nurse in the operating room, was very good. He was able to use Maderin to translate and communicate with me, which made me feel very safe during the operation. He came to check me every day after the operation, and he was serious and responsible. Nurse Susan, Nurse Ye on the second floor in ward and Staff Zhou at the front desk in the admission hall can all communicate with each other in Mandarin, which makes me feel very convenient and secure. Thank you to all the doctors, nurses and hospital staff. My experience in Souldice Hospital is just like a perfect vacation! Trusted hospital, recommended. A patient Xianming July 20,2021. --

Not impressed with the walk in clinic arrangement. No appointments make for a long and wasted day. They could stream line the process and let people know the expected wait time. It is a very poor introduction to the hospital. Came in on a Wed. at 10:30. Finally saw the Dr after 4:30. He examined me for less than 5 minutes and declared I didn't have a hernia despite two ultrasounds stating that I did. He was very dismissive. Knowing that I had something my second surgeon referral ordered a catscan. And yes, I do have a small hernia. Perhaps the Dr doesn't have the same experience with hernias in women. I expect that this hospital is owned and operated by an American company looking to make inroads into the Canadian health care system. My suggestion, if you are a woman with a hernia diagnosis, find another health care provider. If I want decent food, I will go to a decent restaurant.

(Translated) Hello, All the evaluations are in English, I am bilingual and a native of Quebec so my comments will be in French to make it different from the others, I only have good words for LE SHOULDICE HERNIA HOSPITAL, surgeons only do that then the curve d learning has been mastered for a long time and they are highly qualified, I had Dr. Kevin Slater an excellent surgeon maybe not very easy going but the important thing is that he does his job very well with excellence , empathetic charisma is good for politicians. I read the operating protocol for my surgery for a medium-sized right inguinal hernia (I am a retired dental surgeon so medical terms have few secrets for me) I immediately noticed the seriousness of this doctor and his very conscientious approach ... that's the important thing and the 5 * are fully deserved. Now for the experience it's top class nothing to do with public hospitals in Quebec where it is sometimes total chaos. The food is really excellent, the semi-private rooms (four nights) allow you to share your stay with a temporary "buddy", he has certainly undergone the same surgery so the encouragement is mutual with a touch of humor. .. let's say that in the corridors everyone is very Slow Motion when it comes to speaking French ...! There is no sprinter here. All repairs are made without a net, in Quebec a polypropylene net is used (think of a mosquito net) This is faster and much less complex, the Shouldice technique requires surgeons who make hundreds of them per year, this way of treating hernias in Quebec are not widely used because they take longer to accomplish and as I have just expressed, they are more complex to perform and the operating time is longer, a surgeon explained to me that the mesh technique allows him to to do 3 patients instead of 2, in itself this technique with net called Liechtenstein is ok but the complications with the possible displacement of the net are disabling. Another important detail and not the least concerns the hidden hernias in addition to that detected at the initial visit, the techniques with mesh given their less exhaustive approach of the tissues and / or the lack of expertise of the surgeons not doing much cure. hernias can escape secondary hernias present in the deep tissues and which partly explains the residual chronic pain. My experience as a dental surgeon in soft tissue and bone management (albeit a different field) for almost four decades strongly leads me to think that the Shouldice technique is the golden rule, the net only covers the hernia while the Shouldice technique resolves the defect by permanently closing the hernia, there are of course situations where the surrounding tissue being of poor quality will require the use of a net (2% of case!) For residents of Quebec, part of the costs will be reimbursed by the RAMQ, do not forget that it is a private institution but to put it simply, I prefer to spend money on my health than a stay in Cuba. , everyone has their own priorities in life, we can do both too! I congratulate all the staff at Shouldice for the support, I return home with little pain and the satisfaction of having been well looked after, I take a flight home ... what more could you ask for?

Had my surgery last week and it was great experience. People are nice and food are great.

I spent last weekend at Shouldice hospital (resort). Great care from all the staff, doctors and nurses. I especially enjoyed the meals and the beauty of the grounds. Amazing walking trails and leisure activities to pass the time while you are healing.

It was my first experience in a hospital for surgeries and it was a nightmare. The surgery totally destroyed my life. I had bilateral hernia repairs at Shouldice Hospital by Dr. Peter Kalman in 2013 and still have severe chronic pain. Dr. Peter Kalman didn’t see me until my first surgery and didn’t have consultation at all with me. Dr. Peter Kalman performed my surgeries without examination and based on assumption. How he knew the location and the degree of hernia without examination in person? Dr. Peter Kalman cut my left side 11.5 cm incision and right side 12cm. Dr. Indira Sen presented me the consent forms “Authorize to Operate” to me. But she didn’t sign and she lied and didn’t admit presenting the consent forms to me. What a shame and brazen. This type of informed consent process is a fraud and violated the Health Care Consent Act, 1996. The law says “4.The consent must not be obtained through misrepresentation or fraud. 1996, c. 2, Sched. A, s. 11 (1).” Dr. Peter Kalman denied the fact saying that he saw me on the date of admission and had consultation with me. Dr. Indira Sen also lied saying that she didn’t present the consent forms to me on the day of admission. Dr. Peter Kalman is a moral corrupt person, shameless. The same as Dr. Indira Sen. I revisited Shouldice Hospital multiple times for severe pain after surgeries. The physicians always said that my surgeries were excellent; take Advil for pain.

I have never seen a better hospital. It' more like a resort experience. Their medical approach is ahead of contemporary standards. I went there to have a previously messed up ( meshed ) hernia repaired.

Showed up very nervous as this was my first operation. The admission stage took a long time and made me a little grumpy. Once they get you settled in and give you the orientation its smooth sailing. The care is great, the food is great and the procedure is second to none. I could go on all day about how good I feel physically and mentally knowing I went to shouldice! Very social aspect helps you get out of bed as much as possible which is important for the healing process and you feel the support from your new friends that are going through the same thing! Thank you everyone at shouldice that made my experience top notch and thank you to Dr. Ross for performing my operation! Chad Fowlie

So far Ive been twice for a consultation. 1st time I waited 4 hours in the waiting room. Today, Ive been here for 2 hours and 15 minutes as I write this review. To me, this is very disrespectful and there is NO reason for this unprofessional conduct. I am seriously considering going somewhere else. Really, how can a private hospital thats been around for 70 years mess this up so badly? Shouldice is NOT instilling any confidence thus far. NOT a happy prospective client. 3 hours......nothing..... 3 hours sitting here . 16 others in the waiting room. A few in the lunch room. Unacceptable. Disrespectful. Unprofessional. Upsetting

I stayed there for a day and a half good food and proffesional. Nice grounds. A little mini putt. A game of 8 ball. Got out early as 3 days is the norm but my wife promised to take good care of me. Thanks Shouldice. Nice work

Top notch! I have worked in the medical industry for 30 yrs and trust me when i say these guys have it down to a science. Kudos Shouldice!

I recently had an umbilical hernia repaired at Shouldice Hospital. While I have little to compare it to in terms of other hospitals I found the staff was excellent. From the doctors that examined me and completed the surgery, the nurses, the housekeeping staff and those in the dining room I have nothing but great things to say about them all. I had no concerns and only minimal anxiousness that quickly disappeared making my stay totally positive. This is a first class hospital specializing in hernia surgery. I hope not to return too soon but if another hernia needs attention I would return to Shouldice in a minute.

I travelled from Alberta in June to have my hernia surgery completed at the Shouldice. I chose the Shouldice because the non mesh surgery was offered there / and wasn't available to me as a choice in Alberta. I had a smaller size inguinal hernia and was told by my Alberta surgeon that if it wasn't bothering me that I should wait until it either bothered me or got bigger. This didn't make much sense to me - so once I did an investigation re mesh vs non mesh surgery and researched more about hernias ... I contacted the Shouldice. The procedure there for my evaluation by distance was very efficient. Nancy Law was a great contact - she answered all my questions and concerns. My procedure was booked for June.... on my intake date - I met with my surgeon Dr. Slater. He confirmed that I was a great candidate for the non mesh ( he agreed that these are best handled when small). and my surgery was booked the next day. I did follow all of the instructions to the T for post op and my recovery has been excellent. Alberta Health Care did cover some of the costs for the procedure itself - the administration dept filled out all necessary forms for the reimbursement. A few suggestions that might be made would be : the check in procedure for booked patients might be stream lined. I think they run the walk in consultations the same day - so the wait for the doctor consult I felt was extra long ( I think the whole check in took from 9 am - 1 pm). Also - a small note : the meals were OK .... but I thought some healthier / fresher options would be offered. Example - frozen veggies used for the entrees at supper ... just thought more fresh fruits and veggies would be nice.

Do not have your operation here. I was not pleased with the operation, and when they asked me for comment by email after, they didn't bother responding because they didn't like my comments. They should put things back where they belong, where they are supposed to be, but I guess the doctor couldn't be bothered.

Shouldice what could I say about this fantastic Hospital . I just had my surgery done last week . Dr. Hall was nothing but perfect he is a very pleasant doctor to deal with . All the nurses were so professional and very caring to me through all the time I spent at this hospital. The food was awesome I felt like I was at a resort, the kitchen staff should get a lot of praise they were also very pleasant and always smiling . Thank you Shouldice and to your staff you made my stay there so comfortable and stress free. I actually gave a referral to a friend of mine that will be visiting you very soon .

Koshchey

Not happy with my experience. Waited a long time for an appointment which was virtual, and that day I had nowhere to go to be "examined" except the bathroom at my workplace. I was made to pan my phone all sorts of angles while nude and prod myself only to be told a hernia wasn't visible through the low quality video image. I was told that I won't be given an examination unless I go home and take photographs of my genital area from 3 angles and email the photos, however in the same breath they would not accept my medical imaging records and physician reports as enough evidence of hernia. The manipulations the doctor told me to do in the bathroom caused me lasting pain for a week in areas which did not hurt before. Maybe I will try the images and see what happens, but I'm not hopeful.

Charite Anderson

I travelled across Canada after believing Shouldice's claims that they are world leaders in hernia repair, only to be turned away and told I don't have a hernia. They discredited my pain and other symptoms, the ultrasound I had which described the hernia, family history of hernias, and other relevant information. The surgeons were dismissive and condescending. A week ago I had surgery performed on my 2 hernias by a caring, competent doctor who did all the things Shouldice did not: listened, took me seriously, and cared to help.

ozlem gorkan

I was postponing my hernia surgery last 10 years because I was so scared. After doing my research, I have chosen Shouldice Hospital as the technique they are using its accurate. Today I got just discharged from the hospital and this is the first time I feel urge to leave a comment for hospital because they absolutely deserve it! All the stuff (from receptionist to nurse, cook, surgeons ) is so caring and kind and food is amazing! I can even go to Shouldice Hospital for vacation. Thank you for great service :)

Bean Thinking

After a physical examination by my GP, I was told that he suspected I had a mild hernia on the RIGHT side. I had an ultrasound completed in the area but the results were unremarkable. After months of experiencing this mild discomfort I decided to go to Shouldice to get examined as I was told that this is the place to go for hernias. The examination process was 2-step at that time. I first saw a doctor who asked me to drop the drawers and they performed the "standard" push text after which I was informed that they did not suspect I had a hernia at all and if so it was very mild. Second step was seeing the surgeon. Upon entering his office (I believe it was the end office to the left when facing all the doors) I saw him looking at my file and he asked me to drop my drawers and in my opinion he proceeded with a very rough exam on my LEFT side! He didn't even check the side where I came in complaining about. This exam was different than any other I had before (which in retrospect should have raised some flags). He told me this would be "very uncomfortable". He then proceeded to stuck his finger up through my groin area as he asked me to lie down on my stomach and cough/strain for about 1 minute. when it was all said and done he said to me "There you now have a hernia, come back in a few months and we can repair it. Don't put on any weight and if you see a bulge the size of a walnut, you should go to the emergency". I left Shouldice is sweats and slight tremors (I suspect from the physical stress I just endured). When I complained to them, the response was that the testing of "both sides" was standard before 10% of patients have bilateral hernias - did I mention he didn't even test the side I was complaining about? Now I'm dealing with moderate discomfort on my LEFT side which I suspect will be a life-long ordeal. Note to all - BEWARE of what anyone tells you and how anyone treats you (doctors gown or not). In retrospect, I should have asked more questions and probably recorded the exam. Take care of yourselves and ask the questions, don't be shy.

Anthony Woodjetts

Can't say enough good things about this hospital! From attending their walk_in clinic, to my discharge,, everything was professional, and done right. Quite simply, they are specialists.....hernias are all they do! The doctors explained everything fully, and answered all the questions I had. The nurses were excellent! They monitor your recovery constantly. Again they are specialists. They know what to expect, and are prepared for it. The meals are fantastic. Certainly not typical hospital food! To summarize....why wouldn't you choose Shouldice?

Andrew Chiang

I had my left inguinal hernia repaired in January 2019 and almost 3 years later the repair is still good! The surgery itself went smoothly in 2019.

John Musvosvi

The doctor who gave me a virtual exam said I didn't have a hernia and claimed the ultrasound I had and my doctor's conclusions where inaccurate without even looking at my ultrasound. I am not sure how he could be so dismissive after a 20 min virtual exam. Not even a recommendation to have a physical follow up at the clinic. I don't know if they are just cherry picking patients to manipulate their success rate. In any case, I don't recommend this place if this is how they treat new patients.

Len Barbaro

After a 6 week wait for an ultrasound, my hurnia could not be detected by mainstream medical. I reached out to Shouldice and met Dr. Hall in Vancouver where I live. In 3 minutes he diagnosed the hernia and confirmed my appointment for the surgery. My surgery and my stay at Shouldice simply couldn't be more positive, absolutely world class. My sincere thanks to Dr.Hall, Dr. Slater my surgeon and the entire staff. I am forever grateful to you all.

Adam Lourenco

I recently attended shouldice private clinic for a hernia surgery. From a surgery and clinical standpoint I felt that they did a very good job. I was very happy with the doctors and surgeons that I met with as well as the procedures itself. I felt that they were very competent in what they did. I loved the pre-op room where I got to sit in the lounge with a heated blanket and watch TV. It was very relaxing before heading into surgery, which I found helpful. Dr. Hall was excellent and I have complete confidence in the team and the actual surgery component of the facility. Really that’s what matters most. The only complaint that I had from the surgery standpoint was that I did not enjoy waking up during my procedure coming off the anaesthetic. I remember clearly communicating with the team, that I think I need more anaesthetic as I could feel tugging and pulling and I was aware that I was still in surgery, which was very uncomfortable and I could hear the surgeons talking. They were reassuring me and telling me that they were “finishing up” however I don’t think it’s appropriate to be waking up during surgery. They should sedate you longer and you should wake up comfortably in after care. I could literally feel my body tensing up. From a business standpoint however and an after care facility I was very disappointed in my experience here are a few reasons. Especially at a semi private rate of $275/night. Overall the food was very tasty, however I found that the portions were very small especially for a 200 pound man like myself :-) when asking for additional portions it was advised that it was not allowed due to accounting which I found very odd. I’m not sure what they were thinking serving a fish meal to people who have just had surgery, but that meal was absolutely disgusting and a lot of people were complaining about it (not just myself). They need to totally rethink that entire dinner meal plan for “fish night”. It was just gross. The timing of the meals is a little bit off. There is a huge stretch between lunchtime and dinner time but then there is a late evening snack at 8:30 PM which is quite close to dinner time. I feel that they need to offer a snack instead between lunch and dinner or have some type of self-service option throughout the day for refreshment. They wake you up very early at 6 AM for the day however there is no morning coffee available until after 7 AM and everyone is walking around sort of waiting for it. once again a self-serve coffee station would be advisable and comfortable for patients I found the nursing staff to be hit or miss in terms of helpfulness and overall demeanour. at one point I was asking for a cup of ice and I was told that they were in a middle of a shift change and that I’m gonna to have to wait in a very rude way, which I felt could’ve been handled much differently Initially I was in a room alone however on night three they decided to move someone in in the middle of the night while I was sleeping. I woke up during the night to go to the washroom and I was very startled to see that there was suddenly a body on the bed next to me, without any notice to me. It completely threw me off and disrupted my sleep. Obviously sharing a room is to be expected, however those moves should be made while people are aware and have time to get to know their roommate not during the night without any notice. When I asked about why this happened, I was advised that they moved someone in the middle of the night because their partner was snoring. I feel they should add it to the pre-screening protocol to ask people if they snore and to maybe put them together, or give them their own room to prevent these situations from happening. The grounds were beautiful and the actual facility was nice, although it could use a bit of a makeover inside. I also feel that the stay was a bit long and not necessary. I was scheduled to be there from tuesday til Saturday but was able to leave one day early. I really feel two nights would have been sufficient.

Kyle Bruce

The nurses, drs, and staff were fantastic, the grounds beautiful. Operates like a very well oiled machine.

Fraser Smith

Thanks to all at Shouldice for first class treatment during my recent 3 day stay....Sara in admissions, Dr. Spencer, nurses on the third floor and kitchen and wait staff. Food was excellent!! More country club than hospital! If you have a hernia problem, this is the place to be. They've seen it all...nothing in the hernia world is new to them! Everything happens right on time...it's a well oiled machine!

Daniel Tanglao

Best hospital staff:-)

Ramy Ramzy

Clean and upscale.

Had two surgries done and stayed 6 nights at Shouldice Hospital. Every person on staff was friendly and a pleasure to meet. The Nurses and Surgeons are knowledgable and help every step of the process. The food is amazing and grounds are always clean and well kept. There is Wifi and a comfortable common area. Rooms are clean and nice size. Glad I made the choice to have surgeries done here.

Jay McCulloch

I would be remiss if I did not publicly thank OR Nurse Marie-Claire. She was my main nurse while in surgery and her genuine compassion and the dignity that she provided to me was unparalleled! Thank god we have people on this earth as loving and caring as you to a complete stranger. The experience with Shouldice so far was exceptional. Dr Simmons was fantastic from initial meeting to post operative bedside discussion. True professional. If you’re in need of hernia repair, Shouldice is worth the travel and 4 days of your life for World Class treatment. Food is excellent and staff are consummate professionals. Well done!

Warren Carson

Just about everything they do here is top notch! It is not a hospital feel at all.. They get you started on the healing process well. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Thank you Shouldice!

Joe Bonanno

The nursing staff is incredibly helpful, the entire staff in general are all pleasant.

Andrew Straus

I was at the Shouldice Hospital from November 7th till November 10th. The entire staff is outstanding and extremely helpful. Dr. Slater is very accomplished and my recovery has been quick and issue free. Listen to the staff and follow their direction and you'll be amazed at how quickly you'll be pain free. I can't say enough about my great experience at the Shouldice Hospital. Thank you all!

Desmond Zinck

Best hospital experience I've ever had. This place is more like a hotel than a hospital. Seriously, it's so nice here you'll almost want another hernia so you can come back.

Tavin Koonj

Had a hernia surgery back in January. Good place to be treated. They take good care of patients. Staffs were respectful. Very good Covid-19 protocol. Wish they could open another clinic in the western Canada though.

Brian Muir

I'm about 4 1/2 weeks post opp for left iningual and am doing great. From the moment I walked into Shouldice I knew I made the right decision to come here. Dr. Simmons detailed everything that would happen and answered all of my questions, thus there were no surprises. The food was delicious and the nursing staff was incredible. The lodging and grounds are beautiful and relaxing, almost like staying at a resort. All of the patients are there for the same reason so there is a common bond. You just don't get this kind of attention and care at a regular hospital and the repair technique comes with 99% success rate. In fact there were other patients at Shouldice who were having mesh removed and the repair redone using the Shouldice method. One patient I had a lunch with was a doctor from New Jersey. That speaks volumes when doctors are coming to Shouldice for their repair. Thank you to everyone at Shouldice for my surgery and the care you provided. I am forever grateful for your professionalism.

c lund

I appreciated the care I received at Shouldice and the time and attention that Dr. Szasz spent in reviewing my symptoms. He reviewed all of the information and outlined the options that we had for my specific case, and the pros and cons, including further exploratory tests. I arrived from out of town, and felt it was worth the trip even though we opted not to go forward with the surgery at this time.

Peggy Lashmar

I recently took a day off work and drove a 4 hour drive (one way) for an appointment. My GP suggested Shouldice, due to COVID slow downs and he told me of the stellar record they have. I am left with some good and some bad feelings. After having a very detailed virtual appointment, and doing the work to verify I did not have a groin strain, I was given an in person appt at the clinic (appointment times due to COVID rather than walk in). The Dr was friendly and assessed me as having a hernia. I was told the ultrasound my family Dr had done that was showing 2 hernias was not accurate and he found only one. He said I need surgery to repair it. As per their website claiming surgery booked and done within 3 weeks of an appointment, I was hopeful that we would then discuss surgery once COVID rules are lifted. I was very shocked to have him tell me I need to lose almost 50 lbs before they will do the surgery. I am a woman in my 50s and that would put me at my pre-puberty weight. I feel like this is what my Dr had mentioned to me about the selectivity of Shouldice. Unless you are a perfect weight according to their chart, which the Dr referred to hanging on his wall, you will be sent on your way to lose weight. He then handed me diet #4 and said to check in for reassessment when I am halfway there. So, after a 7 minute appointment I was sent on my way. I feel like their halfway is what I actually need to lose. and not the other weight. I am left wondering whether or not I will then be booked in, or be told to continue the other 20-25 lbs weight loss. I have given it an honest try at this point, about 4 days into the diet, and am feeling severe nausea and headaches each day. I know I could use some weight off, but this diet, handed to me by a Dr seeing me for about 5 minutes seems impersonal. He did ask if I want to be referred to their dietician. I think they want perfect patients as far as weight goes. So, the good is the history and patient reviews, the bad is the unknown of when this will be done for me. As far as the in person appointment goes, the diagnosis of a hernia was made. Both Drs I've seen were friendly. However, I feel like I could have spent far less time getting diet #4 emailed to me, being told to call when I'm 30 lbs lighter, than it took for me and my husband to take a day off and drive 8 hours.

The first doctor to assess me misdiagnosed and said I didnt have a hernia. Thank god I waited for a second opinion and the surgeon came in and verified I indeed had a femoral hernia. My surgeon was very nice, and came to my room after to make sure I felt ok. I did wake up during the surgery which was not pleasant. My other complaint is that when I was in my room the doctor who came to remove my clamps scolded me for trying to cover myself with a sheet as there are no curtain between the bed and the door which was opening for the nurse and yet patients were walking by my room. I dont feel Shouldice is accommodating to women. They should have curtains for privacy when I have to lay there half naked with no curtain. Also there is only one shower on the floor and my roommate and I were ther only women on the floor. Women should have their own shower facilities. Sharing a shower with 25 men was not pleasant either. I think some changes need to be done to make women feel more comfortable.

Walk-in clinic is absurd - you need to be there 2 hours before opening. Suggest emerg or regular walk-in clinic, and avoid $10 parking. Ended up leaving after 2 hour wait.

It’s a facade!! Beautiful in the front, Brady Bunch in the back.. clean though.

I was under the impression that this fancy Mansion on Bayview Avenue was the place to go for an Inguinal Hernia Repair. Long story short... did not have a great recovery. The morning of surgery we were all laying on cots in this white room in the basement. Guys and Gals all nervously laughing at the scene in which we all found ourselves in. The Nurse came over with Morphine and 3 Adivans. Next time I wake up, it's after my operation. I was expected to go down for Dinner. I couldn't move. I woke up later in the evening with a Nurse yelling at me and pointing to my pail of vomit. She was mad at me for not ringing the bell. I don't remember being sick. I didn't make it down for the following breakfast or lunch the next day. Food was awful. They feed the Homeless better on Christmas Day. 5 weeks later I find myself in the OR with a perforated appendix. I called Shouldice to let them know that I just had another operation and was wondering if they may have caused it. A Doctor called me back within 5 minutes. Assured me that they were not the cause. I paid a visit to Shouldice. Dr Ross (?) assured me that my chronic nerve pain was called Osteitis Pubis and start taking Advil and it should clear up in TWO years!!! Saw a Specialist (who ordered a CT Scan) when pain did not go away. Results: the 1% of Patients left with unending nerve pain. Last weeks Ultrasound appear normal yet doubled over with nagging, sharp pain. Thanks Shouldice! You've ruined my life.

I just left Shouldice Clinic after having inguinal hernia repair. I chose Shouldice on the advice of my Family GP and on the recommendations of two close personal friends. They were right, my experience exceeded my expectations. Great processes, redundant quality control points, excellent communication on what to expect next, top notch, compassionate staff who really seem to enjoy their roles. Bonuses were the beautiful grounds and the food. In summary I felt that they cared about me as a person, offered consistent clear communication and all staff were extremely competent. You can trust them.

I had a surgery (left side) done there more than 20 years ago because friends and family relatives recommended this hospital. And because the info I picked up about the other option (mesh) seemed really risky for re-lapse. They are truly professional. Yes the wait times can be long, and yes they might nit pick about your weight but that’s just because they guarantee their success and know that fat does not heel well. I was average weight when I first went and I’m not even sure I would pass their weigh criteria now cause I gained a little, but I tell you something, if I needed hernia repair at the moment, I would loose the weigh and go there.!!!! On my first visit (to repair my left side), the doctor checked me out and said to me; “you will be back within 5 years for your right side”. Sure enough, I was back in 3 years for the right. Both surgeries very successful. Never had problems for the past 25 years. AND I am self employed in the masonry business always lifting heavy weights and being very physical. After 2 days of waiting after my left repair, I went back to work. No problem. Just a little pain. My family doctor was looking at me funny when I first told him about going to Shouldice and not his recommended “mesh” doctor but, boy did I make the right decision..!! Just read up about the mesh procedure (how your body can reject it) and things will become much clearer. If you can loose the weigh, get it done there. Trust me, YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.!!!!!!!

I had my hernia repair done on February 10/21 and my surgeon was Dr. Degani. Mine was a very large incarcerated epigastric hernia that required weight loss and general anesthetic to be fixed. The diet plan provided to me by Shouldice worked like a charm and despite being told I might be one of the 2% of patients that require a mesh repair, Dr. Degani was able to fix my hernia WITHOUT one! I'm extremely thankful for Dr. Degani and the entire team for taking such amazing care of me. My Shouldice experience was fantastic. Everyone was friendly and beyond helpful... administration, all the doctors and nurses, the dietitian, kitchen staff... everyone. And the food was amazing - restaurant-calibre meals in a hospital! Staying there the night prior to surgery and for three nights following was also a bonus. It helped alleviate my anxiety leading up, and I believe the regimen of walking, healthy, scheduled meals and social interaction with other patients were all key to speeding my recovery. If you have a hernia, you owe it to yourself to talk with a doctor at Shouldice before you agree to a standard-issue mesh repair at your local hospital. Going to Shouldice was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Steve Sporina

From the moment I walked into Shouldice, from the first person I met to the last person I met in their faculty, all showed the same care and compassion as a team tending to all my needs. A special thanks to Dr. Hall and your anesthesiologist, they were amazing. GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU! Love, Steve

Having successfully completed both a left and right inguinal (groin) hernia , i can only say that Shouldice is really the only choice . A true professional place where they treat you right, take care of you, and ensure that you walk out of there healed and not having to come back. They rarely use mesh , and for good reasons if you do the research on Google. They are the gold standard in the world for a reason. Do your own research, and you will see very plainly that this is the Truly the only place that matters when it comes to hernia surgery

Jim Nitz

Although the check in process takes a bit over 3hrs there is no other place I'd go to have this procedure preformed.(3hrs is not bad for any hospital in Ontario in my experience at least) The staff is top notch in every aspect. Food is fantastic even if some were complaining by the end of the stay. They needed a quick reminder that this is a hospital, and in my opinion hands down the best "hospital" food I've ever had. When's the last time you've had a steak for dinner in hospital? Or ribs for lunch? Just saying the food is very good. The nurses we're fantastic, very encouraging and helpful in the recovery process. The lounge area and outdoor space were very nice. It was a pleasure to walk in the gardens, put a few golf balls or disc golf if you were feeling good enough! Again the staff handling food were awesome aswell. We were getting ready to watch the Raptors games which started at 9,the same time as our snack time, and they brought the food upstairs to us so we would miss any of the game. Thanks for that everyone really appreciated that gesture. If or when I need to have another hernia repaired I will be coming back.

The only place for hernia surgery. Attentive staff, excellent meals, calming peaceful grounds. Celebrating 75 years of operation. Hope they don't change this model or sellout, this is what people want. It's the way healthcare should be. Wishing you continued success. Thankyou.

Wayne Pearce

After a consultation last June, I was told they could do my surgery but will be on waiting list for about a year, due to the need for general anesthetic. This week I was the lucky recipient of an an email stating " Regretfully we are not booking General Anesthesia patients" Thanks for nothing. Thanks for waiting 7 months to make this decision.

I had a great experience staying there for inguinal hernia surgery. The staff are all professionals working hard to run the operations and services efficiently. The whole building is very clean and every single spot is being sanitized on a regular basis with Covid-19 neccessary precautions. Nursing team are all nice and caring, including Monir who is truly a dedicated professional lady at her job, and Rachel with her great attitude dealing with patients. Thanks to all!

Mike Fearns

Great place all around.. Very professional in every aspect..Not to mention the food was great too..

From the examination to the actual procedure to the recovery, the entire staff has been a model of efficiency and professionalism. Every staff I encountered were courteous and professional. I had an excellent stay at the Shouldice Hospital. The surgeon came by often to assure me that the incision is healing well. Just a great experience. The grounds are very well maintained and it was great to go for walks (slow walks) enjoying the beautiful gardens. By the way, the food was great and well prepared.

5-star hotel with a surgical and nursing team. Nobody goes there for vacation so patients are not always in the mood to appreciate how good they have it. You just have to experience it for yourself. I was conscious throughout surgery and it felt like one of those massage machines that Dr Ho advertises on TV. With Dr Spencer Netto doing the repair and Dr Park handling sedation it was a thrill I'm glad I did not miss and I can't wait for my other side to need a repair so I can go back there.

Not Impressed Drove to hospital today for walk in exam as advertised. Entered parking lot and had to pay meter for full day parking, reluctantly paid only to find out later that if one is to stay and actually see a doctor it takes a full day. In my case I sat in outside wait area for 3.5 hours, approached desk to see how much longer before i would be herded into a second waiting room that also had an additional 2 hour wait time. Staff were not knowledgeable and seemed disinterested in any kind of answers. At any rate I cannot write a review about the doctors since I did not wait. 3-5 hours of wait time is enough for this guy to go home. A customer lost

Patrick G

This place is ridiculous. They will make you wait for hours and hours for a consultation. They don’t offer appointments because “they don’t know the schedule enough in advance.” Well, I wouldn’t feel too confident getting surgery somewhere where they can’t make appointments because their apparent incompetence doesn’t allow them to understand their own scheduling. Staff seem to be completely careless of the comfort of potential patients (ie anyone who is waiting for a consultation). Stay away.

I chose to have my surgery at Shouldice Hospital based on recommendations from friends who had been there, the type of surgical repair that they do and the fact that I could have the surgery completed at least 6 months before my Province's health system could schedule me for surgery. While at the Hospital I learned about its history and that it's business and care model had been studied by a respected American University and had been highly regarded. While many in Canada have philosophical objections to the delivery of medical services by private interests, Shouldice Hospital offers a clear example of efficiencies and results that could be achieved in the private delivery of specialized surgical procedures.

An incredible experience. Was in the care of extremely caring staff, from the nurses, housekeepers and notably the best doctor around: Dr. Henao-Florez who was extremely personable, professional and experienced. The food was 5-star restaurant-style healthy fine dining and very generous portions even during 9pm snacktime. Grounds are similar to Blue Mountain Scandinave Spa (without the water) although the rooms are a bit dated but fitting as it's very cozy and meets the needs of most clientele who frequent the hospital. Nothing else compares, please extend my thanks to the doctor as well who made it a memorable experience.

With expected trepidation, I took my 85-year-old Dad to Toronto from Calgary, having investigated extensively the Shouldice clinic and the scientific publications regarding their method. It has been a bit over a week since his operation, and he is recovering very well. I hope there won't be any complications in the future, but so far it has been quite amazing. My critical factors were no mesh, no general anesthesia and the specialization of the surgeons exclusively on hernia. As one publication I consulted mentioned: Astley Cooper (1804), in the preface to his classic monograph on the anatomy and surgical treatment of hernia, wrote, ”No disease of the human body belonging to the province of the surgeon, requires in its treatment a greater combination of accurate anatomical knowledge with surgical skill, than hernia in all of its varieties.“ More recently, in 1989 George Wantz states, ”The outcome of an inguinal hernioplasty is more dependent on the skills and experience of the surgeon than on the type of repair“. In 2006, Gilbert et al. averred, ”The use of any mesh product to repair a hernial defect will never supplant the need to fully know and utilize the layers, planes and spaces of the abdomen.“ The focus on this specific problem is clearly highly beneficial for the outcome, and Shouldice rightly prides itself based on that. I am happy my family made the decision to entrust my Dad's hernia operation to Shouldice. It is a shame that the Canadian public system cannot provide the same level of skill and care as the Shouldice. They certainly have set an excellent professional standard. With gratitude to Dr. Hall, and all the nurses on the 3rd floor and the staff everywhere. Beyond the people, it is actually nice to have real cutlery and the rooms that look more domestic than the typical modern hospital rooms full of loud and imposing equipment, and the beautiful grounds. It all contributes to the positive experience and is definitely therapeutic.

Mat Eslami

I don't think a hernia operation should be so painful as mine was. I was screaming of pain and there was no anesthesiologist around which is kind of odd since I thought anesthesiologist should remain in the OR during the surgery. I even felt being cut!

Brad Brunner

I had my hernia repair surgery 6 months ago at Shouldice. I wanted to wait some time to see how it heals before I left a review. I must say first off, the hospitality of the staff, nurses, and kitchen workers are all 10/10! They are all great people and did a great job everyday. Always making sure you have what you need. The surgery went good and I must say Dr. Singal did an excellent job. 6 months later and I am feeling great! I am so happy I made the choice to go to Shouldice.

Nexus Tees

So you don't do virtual appointments anymore because the doctor doesn't want to, are you serious? Why is it on the questionnaire then? You can't make an appointment so please travel here anyways and you may not get in? Why not just do appointments like everyone else as it makes the most sense so that people don't waste their time. I'm sure it only matters when people waste your time though. This is ridiculous. I'm sure it's good for those who CAN get in. I'll go elsewhere, your "hospital" needs to get with the times and not waste others time.

Excellent professional service!

Dr. Slater did a great job fixing my hernia and nurses/staff are good. One thing is that the sedation didn't quite work effectively so there was significant discomfort during surgery. But I made a successful recovery.

Terrific experience, great doctors, no pain after 3 days since the surgery (I play hockey and it's as good as new). I read dozens of Medical journals and studies comparing mesh vs Shouldice and I was convinced the Shouldice was the best. The result was better than I expected!

Phil Ouellette

Generally speaking when I've had any surgery, the food and hospital grounds are the least of my concerns. I care about the procedure, medical staff, level of care and results. I was not disappointed in 2002 when I had left inguinal hernia surgery. My recovery was right on schedule and I have had absolutely no issues in almost 18 years. Now unfortunately I require a right inguinal repair. Sounds kind of silly but I'm kind of looking forward to getting back to Shouldice. By the way....... food and grounds were pretty awesome back then!!

Cyrus Lotfi

Was admitted for 6 days for double inguinal hernia surgery in Feb 2021. I chose this place because I didn't want the mesh repair. I was nervous at first, right up until the first surgery. I voiced my concerns (which you should always do in any medical situation) and they were heard and noted. After my first surgery I had no more worries. Can't say enough about the place. Thank you to my original surgeon Dr. Spencer and my second surgeon Dr. Ross. The nurses, Mrs Monir and everyone who helped me during my stay. The support staff in the kitchen as well. And the food! Top quality, smart portions and restaurant quality. Pampered all around and worth the bit extra you might have to pay. (Hospitals tend to be cold and filled with more anxiety) The grounds themselves are gorgeous (21 acres) right in the city and doing walks around them help before and after the surgery. Thank you Shouldice

Mo Aboualy

It is the best place for hernia repair. I had a good experience. The hospital feels more like a home than a hospital

First of all, a belated thank you goes out to the Shouldice team for their fall visit to Windsor. ~400k drive into TO traffic would have been stressful for both me & my old car. The staff was professional & welcoming. Dr. F. Spencer Netto was excellent & so patient in answering my many prepared questions. Unfortunately, another unrelated medical issue presented itself just prior to my appt., that needs attention. Dr. Spencer's thoughtfulness/understanding was much appreciated in his addressing even my non-inguinal hernia concerns. If one is treated so well pre-op, I now have no apprehension visiting Shouldice in hopefully the not too distant future. Thanks again, LM

Cezar Gavrilovici

Best hospital for hernia repair... The staff and doctors are great!

Benjamin Boyes

I had my surgery on September 14th and I can say that this place is amazing. From admission to checkout the staff was friendly, except for one nurse. They answer any questions you might have about pre-op, surgery, and post-op. The accounting department is able to answer questions about insurance coverage and work absences. The nurses are friendly and extremely helpful. The building is amazing and the grounds are beautiful and well kept even though I didn't feel up to venturing very far. The food was far beyond my expectations with it's multiple courses and nutrition. I would recommend this place to anyone that has to get hernia surgery. There was another Google review that I read that outlined everything to expect and I feel it should be on the Shouldice website because it was very informative.

Trevor Yhap

My first OR experience was at Shouldice on Monday Aug 24, 2020. Needless to say my nervousness was written all over my face. Dr. Hall immediately noticed and found a way to establish a rapport. On the day of surgery the nurse who took me to the OR was most pleasant and even though in my mind I wanted to escape as we got closer I couldn't help but follow her. The two OR nurses were warm people who oozed confidence and caring. During the operation I felt no pain; just the dexterous hands of a skilled surgeon who still took time to supply humour post op.

Tim Clark

I had my surgery a little over four weeks ago and everything went exactly as they told me. I was able to get out walking a few kilometers a day as soon as I got home, resume jogging after two weeks and I was able to resume pickleball and golf after 4 weeks without any pain or issues. Dr Spencer did an excellent job both before , during and after the surgery. The staff at Shouldice are exceptional, so very respectful and accommodating and they know their stuff. The food was excellent and the grounds are beautiful. If you need hernia surgery, this is the place to go. My only complaint would be the wifi in my room. It was very slow and made using the internet challenging and when you are spending 3-4 days there it becomes annoying. Other than that, an excellent experience and I would highly recommend Shouldice.

Would not recommend this place. It was an extremely bad experience.

I had an inguinal hernias repair done 4 weeks ago. For a surgical experience, for which I have little to compare it to, the experience was very positive and professional. Every member of the Shouldice staff were happy, pleasant attentive and professional. The facilities were very clean. My recovery has gone exactly as I was told it would. As described in many other reviews the food was very good. I understand why the Shouldice Hospital has the reputation it does.

Summer Maqdassy

Surgeons are experienced and nice but some of the nurses can be better. They would be better officers. They made my husband wait wearing just a robe in the lobby since 7am and his surgery was scheduled after 1pm. He was tired, cold, hungry, & sleepy. They asked him to be there and ready before 7am for no reason. He could've slept at least or relaxed in his room

Had surgery this week . Dr Szasz made sure I was confortable for the procedure very happy with result ,made new friends great experience . will recomend my friends to have surgery at Shouldice .

My husband Stefan had hernia surgery November 07,2018. We would like to say thank you to Dr. Hall and all staff they help him to go true till he stay in hospital. All staff there was friendly and very help full. Food 100% good, all hospital nice and very clean everywhere. Now I know you are the best hospital on the world. Thank you so much for all support.

As I glimpse over the reviews, I notice that most have a recent timeline attached. Mine, however has a looong timeline as I had a double hernia repair done in September of 1991. A bit of background, At the time I was a 43 year old residential roofing contractor which required lifting 70-80 pound bundles of shingles on my shoulders - sometimes two stories up a ladder to the roof deck. Sure it hurt for a while but what can I say "It's an operation where you get cut open -fixed-and repaired". I Went back to work within 2 weeks went back to lifting bundles within a month and have never stopped. Today, I am a 73 year old, still doing the roofing and still carrying bundles up that damn ladder. This is 30 years since and Have NEVER had a reason to revisit the Shouldice Hospital. Like most of the current reviews, I agree that this place is a god-send if you need a hernia repair, The building and grounds were immaculate with EXCELLENT Doctors and staff and the food even 30 years ago was great. The key here I guess is that I did what I was told to do and when I was supposed to do it. So If you have a hernia, DO NOT PUT IT OFF - MAKE A CALL AND GET REGISTERED HERE. This is a place where your special problems are taken care of by special people who SPECIALIZE IN FIXING YOUR TYPE OF PROBLEMS. I can only give testament to the last thirty years, but that I think should tell you something. Thank you to the doctors and staff. Harley B.

My Shouldice Clinic hernia surgery repair took place in 1980 & it's still perfect. Zero problems. Two other hernia surgeries in the USA in 2001 had to be repeated a few years later. No comparison: Shouldice really is the absolute best.

Had my Hernia repaired a week ago, great doctors and staff and the food is good. I would like to thank the nurse Lynn who helped me and Carlos helped me when i passed out but was still standing. Carlos was really good explained everything to me and really helped me out. Good job keep it up Carlos. Anoop

I was treated with the utmost respect. I had an amazing experience in comparison to a Hospital type settings. I absolutely recommend anyone who suffers from a Hernia to have Shouldice Hospital Surgeons help you. The staff all treat you great as if your at a resort setting. But care and take care also!

I had my left inguinal hernia repaired at Shouldice last week without mesh . A week post surgery I feel great and I am back to my regular activities . Dr. Slater who did my surgery and all the other staff were very knowledgeable ,kind ,efficient and compassionate .The food was great .Mahsa the dietician gave me good advice and guidance to help me loose the required weight pre surgery . I am a gynecological surgeon and I could have had my repair done at any other hospital, but I chose Shouldice because of its reputation and outcomes . They did not disappoint.

Just got my surgery done at 5/10/2017 Amazing Hospital with an Amazing Staff ! Every patient I met and talked to while I was there, was also equally impressed . Doctors are the greatest , and full of humor. Very very Nice people. This is the place to get your hernia repaired !!! Resort settings rather then just a Hospital, But we all came for the Shouldice repair technique and it is amazing and truly works ! Beautiful settings were a bonus. Despite my busy schedule, I came from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and met lots of other good people(smart People) that also traveled far to get the operation done here, few from even Europe, cause we all have done our home work before hand, and we knew we didn't want to take chances with mesh repairs. I am very impressed- Love to share it- This is a 5 star Hospital surgery center for your Hernia -take it from me-look no further. The best! Norman Ergene, Fort Lauderdale, Florida

I had a triple incisional hernia repaired at Shouldice Hospital almost 3 years ago. The treatment was absolutely world class. The grounds are so beautiful. The food is excellent. I have had zero complications. This is the place to go. The only thing that is not 100% is the waiting time, but that's only because people come from all over for this special treatment. They could double or triple the size of the hospital and still be busy.

My experience at the Shouldice Hospital to repair my right inguinal hernia was wonderful from start to finish. Dr. Simmons (who I was fortunate enough to see during my initial consult, admission exam and had as my surgeon) provided me with the greatest confidence, answering all of my questions and giving in-depth detail of what to expect during and after the surgery. A sincere thank you has to be given to the administrative and kitchen staff, PSWs, OR staff and nurses. Their friendliness and smiles were such a welcome sight pre and post-surgery. The food was great. Balanced and thought out, it was nice to have different types of dishes throughout my 3 night stay, no two meals were the same. My favourite time of day was definitely the evening snack round. If by chance I require another hernia related surgery in the future, I would not hesitate for a moment and chose Shouldice Hernia Hospital again. Thank you!

My father stayed in Shouldice Hospital one month ago, and it was a fantastic experience to me and my father. My father was kindly treated and all the staff there were nice and helpful. The surgeon was professional and friendly, which made us feel relaxed. My father cannot speak English. A warm-hearted nurse who can speak Chinese helped him all the way out. My father didn’t feel any pain during the surgery, and he recovered quickly and smoothly after the operation. The whole facility was comfort and clean everywhere and the food provided is so delicious, like in an excellent restaurant. Overall, we appreciated the services in Shouldice Hospital and would like to recommend it to anyone who needs a hernia surgery.

Had the procedure in 1985 heard a great deal about it before I went and it lived up to it reputation havent had a problem since

I cannot say enough good things about Shouldice. I am a 63 year old male and had lower abdominal hernia repaired 30 days ago (July2014). The incision has faded to almost a pencil like mark on my fair skin. I am normally a very slow healer so I am very surprised at the rapid healing. There was never any significant pain and I was up walking around very quickly. In fact I was annoyed that the nurses wouldn't let me up sooner. I walked around the beautiful grounds several times a day. My experience was typical. The first day there I talked to a woman who had surgery just a few hours before. I was surprised to see her walking around, but I came to learn that this is the norm. The food is terrific, in fact I gained several pounds in my short stay there. Meeting other patients from across the country and from all around the world was an unexpected plus. They are VERY busy here, but everyone was helpful and friendly. The admission process was a little slow and I felt that they were short staffed, perhaps because of summer holidays. I would encourage patients to follow the on-line application process. There is little advantage to presenting yourself for examination before being admitted for surgery. You will be examined by TWO surgeons during the admission process anyway. I used the online method and had my surgery within two weeks. It was initially scheduled for 4 weeks, but I requested an earlier date as I planned to be in the area at that time. Appointments have to be confirmed two weeks prior to surgery, so I suspect there are openings at that time when people cancel out. Every day there I overheard potential patients on their cell phones debating whether to have their surgery here. In my mind there really is no decision if you want it fixed right, the first time. Many of the patients I met there were having their previous hernia surgery, that had been done elsewhere, re-done correctly at Shouldice. This seemed to be especially so for woman and the majority of them were there for repair to a previous poor job done elsewhere. -Greg C
