My Uncle has just been moved out of the Intensive Care Unit, so this review applies to it. My Uncle went in for 2 open heart operations. When in progress, a 3rd issue was discovered. Dr. Chu provided the level of care we thought we could only hope for. He operated close to 9 hours to make certain he had done everything he could to help my Uncle live well longer. The care at the ICU was as good as it could be, which was excellent. The nurses in ICU West take care of the types of things few relatives would and also subtle things, like hanging a whiteboard where he can see it, writing where he is and what day it is on the board. They were very concerned about determining whether he normally wore glasses or not, because if he did and did not have them, it would contribute to confusion. The nurses demonstrated a genuine care for my Uncle's well-being to the nth degree. When I wasn't able to be there, they took care of everything he needed and continually asked what else they could do. They did not just leave him in bed. They helped him get out into a chair, to stand and to walk when ready. This with all the other things they have to worry about. I understand that sometimes difficult decisions need to be made at hospitals. And we mostly see one side of it - our side. I am very appreciative of the care my Uncle is receiving at Hamilton General. Thanks to Dr. Chu, the other doctors and nurses and all the support staff for what you do and how you do it.

2019 Jan. To Aug. I have had ,X-rays, TEE, Angiogram, blood work and other diagnostic work before seeing heart surgeon. The staff in all departments were amazing. I would recommend it to anyone. My only problem as an arthritic with trouble breathing is the long walk to each department. I had pre op in one Dept. then hematology a long way away (for me) . Most Seniors had a problem. This has nothing to do with care. It is first class. Thank You to all people involved. Have just had heart surgery.. staff are amazing. Thank you all for an exceptional experience. YOU. ROCK.

On Saturday 13th April I was brought in to emergency by ambulance and eventually placed in a holding ward where I was treated along with what I slowly gathered was a homeless drug addict on the other side of the screen. Firstly thank you for your kind service in helping me in my time of need but the real reason for this review is. I want the good people in management to know that you have one tremendous asset in the nurse on duty that day named Catharine. Where others had failed she solved an extremely difficult an upsetting situation with kindness, compassion, patience and understanding and yet did it with a no-nonsense firmness which I believe to be a true talent. I wouldn't swap her jobs for love nor money.

I was admitted Feb 15th of this year due to a severe ankle dislocation/break. The team that did my resets, xrays, surgery and particularly follow-up in the Orthopedic ward were fantastic! I had a 5 day stay & met many staff. 99% of my experience was 5 star. The ER staff seem a bit overworked and one nurse there was quite indifferent to my needs but every other person went out of their way to make it a very positive experience.

Came here today because my doctor recommended me to since she felt I tore my rotators cuff (which requires surgery). Ended up waiting 5 hours and didn’t get a wrist band with my name, and was forgotten in the waiting room. Ended up leaving and going home! Many people came in with a cold and I was in horrendous pain, in tears and my arm started to get numb. I will never come back here again!

Blacked out in the middle of the Night and collapsed and smashed face on floor. Had to call ambulance.. Cut above my eye required 3 stitched. Had pain in my hand, knee, orbital socket and cheek as well as lower back. They did not xray of my head to see the extent of the damage they just stitched me up. They didnt look at my hand of knee at all. When they were going to discharge me I went to get up and almost collapsed again from back pain at which time they sent me for CT scan to see if I had kidney stone. No stones but urine test they did found blood in my urine. They discharged me saying they was nothing more they could do. I could barely make it to the Uber I had to call. Luckily back recovered very quickly but had to go to Dr. regarding Hand Cheek Eye Socket and Knee and he sent me for Xray right away and we found out all are broken.

Waits are long, and once you get in to see the actual Doctor, it's another couple hours, because, they only have one doctor on duty. And if you're situation isn't that urgent, people who DO have worse problems, will be seen first (understandable) ,but it makes for longer waits, because of that lonely Doctor, don't forget, is by himself! Btw, some of the nurses aren't very nice either, we come in there with issues and the people who work there end up adding more to our issues because of their sour attitudes. We need nice nurses to take care of us when we are ill, sry that WE might not be the happiest, but, we are the ones hurting, should we be happy in a situation like that, but you nurses out the should be obligated to put us in a better mood, you know, make us feel better, THAT IS WHAT YOU'RE THERE FOR, to make us feel better, it's your job!

The HGH reflects many of the clichés about Ontario hospitals: the waits are obscenely long, the staff is generally surly and/or unhelpful, and the food is atrocious. Since these things are apparently quite typical in Ontario hospitals, the HGH should receive an average rating. However, my experience on the HGH cardiac ward makes the hospital seem quite exceptional ... and not in a good way. While there were one or two compassionate professionals on the ward, I generally found the nursing staff to be profoundly uncaring and insensitive. It seems ironic that such heartlessness can be found on a cardiac ward.

Worse experience ever I had visiting my daughters Dad he has bad liver and there getting him Tylenol for pain I was reading online that liver damage isn’t good taken Tylenol for liver damage that makes it worse

The staff Ive dealt with have been pleasant and wonderful. I was there this week for an MRI and the Diagnostic Imaging staff were very nice and reassuring.

SAGAR SHAH

The doctors are great. The staff is very caring we have never been misguided. the only thing i hate is the smoking precautions. the moment you get out of the door. you will see people smoking. I mean right next to the entrance door. That is not good and i want that to be stopped

John O'Boyle

A terrible and most miserable waste of time ,spent 10 hours waiting and being lied to pertaining to when I would be seen by a doctor in the emergency,I left after 10 hours of a spirit draining wait ,I was in a severe state and sat for 10 hours with no concern from anyone in was told that I would have to wait for a bed to come available but why do I need a bed why can't a doctor treat me in the waiting room I mean seriously if this is the reason for long waiting periods why not change the way we treat our patients ...I felt like I was a piece of garbage in their eyes and a bother to them ,what ever happened to the oaths they swore

Do not ever come here to the emergency! You will wait 4 hours minimum before you see a medical person.

Visited my sister here. It's not really the hospital's fault but it was like I was in an episode of the Walking Dead. Human dregs everywhere, in various stages of dress, with various grips on various stages of mental incapacitation, physical incapacitation; and these were just the downtowners loitering in the area and on the property.

I had surgery there on November 20, 2017. The aftercare is nonexistent, the nursing staff do what is required of them pre-surgery because those tasks can not be ignored, but aftercare they do absolutely nothing that brings comfort to their patients except notify family the patient is able to leave. So disappointed in the care I received or shall I say didn’t receive.

Bob Shepherd

Went in on a Thursday after putting a nail through my upper chest. Was rushed right in and taken care of. That is, I assume protical for a canadian hospital with a severe lung injury. What gets this hospital the stars is the nursing staff. I have never had a nursing staff that was so enjoyable. They made the experience as best as it could be. The staff here goes above and beyond what ive seen from nursing staffs before. Great job to the General for the staff they have. Your all amazing. Thank you!!

The Doctors, Nurses, Staff and Social Workers showed immense compassion and care to my father. Although he did pass away, I know that the angles at Hamilton General Hospital did all they could to keep him with us. To all the doctors, nurses, staff and social workers, our family's heart felt appreciation for all the hard and important work you do everyday.

ER is an absolute joke. Waited hours to see a doctor. There is a reason people go to ER! Do yourself a favour and go to any other hospital/clinic in case of an emergency. Even worse hospital than the ones in third-world countries.

Edd Gald

Sabrin Abbas

If you have an emergency or need to see a doctor ASAP, go to any other hospital/clinic other than the General. Triage nurses are extremely rude, the doctor on call I had was not confident in his job nor did he pay enough attention to my matter. The wait time is obviously ridiculous... I think the hospital needs to plan a better and more efficient way to see patients.

Nacho Garcia

The staff along the way were all so kind and positive, which I imagine is quite difficult in a hospital setting. The appointment ran smoothly and I have zero complaints

I would like to send a very big thanks to the ICU West staff and the surgeon and team that operated on my brother. The staff was caring and patient with the family and our brother. And we were impressed at how calm they were when we had momentary bouts of panic at times when visiting. They allowed us to call 24/7 with any questions and just to see how he was doing. I did call one day at 1:30 am as I was worried. The nurse was calming and patient with me....thank you, I slept better.

Very good hospital. Im not sure why some folks are complaining , Try to go to different country hospital and maybe then people see the difference. Great stuff and doctors

Not the best hospital in Hamilton doctors are supposed to be looking at people and let them go after 12 to go home and it’s 1:22 and it’s a mickie mouse place not the best hospital to go to but other than that the Hamilton General Hospital is the best

Greg Forsyth (Le Saboteur)

This was my first time at a Hamilton hospital for an ER trip and I couldn't have been more impressed with the conduct of the staff when dealing with both me and many of their other patients in the ER. Incredibly compassionate care all around. Of course there was a wait to see someone, find me an ER where you're not going to have to wait 3-4 hours to see someone these days but thats not on the hospital thats on the government funding the hospital.

It would be great if the hospital staff had a designated smoking area. I do not appreciate having to stand in the cold while I wait for the bus due to the fact the hospital staff consistently occupies the bus shelter to smoke their cigarettes (at Wellington and Barton). Not to mention how poorly this looks on your institution to see your staff in scrubs smoking and littering in front of your building... So healthy.

Joe B

Emergency room triage nurse......THE WORST!! THE ATTITUDE FROM THIS LADY WAS JUST OUT OF THIS WORLD!! Are these people forced to work in the hospital business? please hire staff who will treat people with better attitude (i get being busy and the need to speed up the process conversation wise, but when you completely disregard a person trying to explain things.....it is just below the level expected in this profession). LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST, THE NURSE WHO SAW US DID PUT US AT THE LOWEST PRIORITY, WE ENDED UP STAYING AT THE HOSPITAL FOR 8 HOURS BEFORE SEEING THE DOCTOR!!

Jenny C

I’m new to town and when I woke up to the worst pain of my life I was scared to death but the doctors and nurses of this hospital went above and beyond to make me feel like someone cared and would be there for me. I was there alone but I did not feel that way. Thank you. Some of the waits were long but I understand that they create an order to best help everyone and there will always be someone in pain that has to wait. I would wait twice as long for that kind of service.

rec.excellent care from both drs. and nurses

A very busy place. Parking is a little hard to get to the first time and not cheap. That's typical for a hospital these days. My biggest complaint is the front entrance. I've had to drop someone off and pick them up and it's way to chaotic. They need to revamp that whole entrance. Today there must have been eight ambulances there making it even more complicated. The silver lining though is the Cinnamon Crunch pastries in the cafeteria... delicious!!

The worst place you ever go when you have an emergency case. My nephew got a wound in his face at 11 pm After we had been to this hospital, we stayed until 8 with no doctor show up, The nurse or the medical assistant was so rude when we asked her why no one show up to check the kid.

My father had been taken here early in the morning by the paramedics after we called about lower abdominal pain, sweating, and paleness. Me and my mother had went home after learning that he would be having tests for a few hours, and upon picking him up several hours later, were told by him that nurses threatened to call security and even the police when he said he was unable to stand or even sit up. He has arthritis, diabetes, is 68 and has been taking prescription pain medication for 10 years, when he does not take the medication on time it is difficult for him to move AT ALL. Nurses obviously did not take that into account when they threatened to have security man-handle him if he did not sit up. This place is a joke, unless your life depends on it its better to move on down to st Josephs.

I was not impressed. My brother collapsed at work with a brain tumor, and was rushed here. Family is located in Kingston and being the closest, in Guelph, I was running back and forth. 1 week here and they couldn't even clean him. They tried to release him to my care in Guelph, ignoring my family request to have him released to them in Kingston, where my other 7 siblings and they could provide support and rehabilitation for him. They went so far as to begin the process of connecting him to the CCAC in GUELPH, despite being asked over and over to connect him to CCAC in Kingston. We had to have my parents drive from Kingston - and arrive on his release date, where I did not show, contrary to their plan. They then were forced to release him to my parents, and set up resources for him in Kingston. There was ONE nurse who took the time to communicate with my frantic parents, with kindness and compassion but we discovered this was not a trend with other staff.

The best staff who went above and beyond for my boyfriend during his emergency stay. Sometimes a difficult patient, they handled every situation with professionalism and a positive attitude.

Paul Deschamps (KillaSkill)

Went here for stitches a few years ago and the wait wasn't the worst, the doctor knew what he was doing and it healed great. Thanks again. Also the cafeteria was open late and had a good selection. Don't see why this place is rated so low.

Boyfriend had head split open and required stitches. We sat waiting for over 4 hours (until 3:30 am) and no attention was given. When asked how much longer it would be the lady said there were 4 more people in front of him, and this was just to get into the second waiting room. So ridiculous.

I'm aware that many patient concerns don't usually require urgent care so staff become desensitized. It's that attitude that matters most regarding patient care. People generally feel normal so they go to the hospital when they don't feel normal, especially when you doc can't see you and clinics are closed. In my recent visit, I went in reporting an aggressive abscess. I described the severity in which a small bump became a grapefruit in 48hrs. Apparently, it wasn't an important matter as my stay in the waiting room was over 11hrs along with a 90min wait in the RAZ; the nurse belittling my complaint by "milking the issue" (I couldnt walk so i got wheelchaired in). How disassociated the front line workers became! The doctor came in, saw my complaint and I was rushed into surgery. Had the CAT scans done, a specialist came in...oh yeah! My "minor" issue was life-threatening!! Yes, so much in fact that I was in surgery quicker than my RAZ wait time. >90min. I scored the hospital as 4 star primarily because of the above experience. It lost a star because assessment sucks! However, that being said - the 4-star experience was due to the very good care I received after seeing the doctor in the RAZ. Think about that for a moment! My first 12hrs was terrible, painful and lacking care/attention....what kind of care did I get after to outweigh my initial experience? I stayed for a week, having two surgeries and multiple specialists oversee the problem. The food was surprisingly good (vegetarian meals - but stay away from the eggs.) and the nurses were regular, experienced and filled with good bedside manners. I didn't enjoy not being able to rest as they constantly interrupted rest/sleep with tests, dressing changes and vitals. It's been a month and I'm still home recovering but I left healthy and happy. Kudos to the nursing staff of 6S, Room 2 (Oct 6 - 13). You guys really are under appreciated! Thank you to my specialists and surgical team for the quality repair. ER staff (excluding Alex), you need to improve your skills in both care and assessment. If a medical complaint concerns you, urge a doctor to look! Not all ambulance arrivals trump walk-ins!

Had a fractured patella (kneecap). Been to the fracture clinic 3 times now, longest wait was 4.5 hours, shortest was 2.5 hours. Very busy with few doctors. Don't expect much one-on-one with the doctor(2-5mins), they seem very rushed with the volume of injuries. Socialised health care at work! Don't expect high quality of service, I'm younger and overall injury wasn't too bad. For the elderly, I'm sorry.

Ron W

I was brought in for heart problems by ambulance. The hey stuck me in the waiting room which is full of people not social distancing. I waited for hours no update but more people in the waiting room. I left and will take my chancing dying opposed to getting COVID and dying. Never go here

Devon Levack

Been going through a cardiac work up at the General and McMaster (which are related). The competency is amazing and the people are genuinely caring. Very thorough investigative testing to make sure they determine what is really going on with me. The Internal Medicine Rapid Response program is outstanding and super responsive compared to living in Calgary, Victoria and Vancouver. And still being investigated so will update as things get determined :)

Michael See

They discriminate against people with legitimate medical respitory conditions. Since the pandemic has started they refuse to allow me entry into the hospitals for any reason. All due to my respitory illness which prevents me from wearing a mask or face shield. I've had so many cancelled diagnositic appointments, that I have lost count. If an emergency comes up and I need medical attention they won't allow me in. The doctors and nurses should be ashamed. Administration staff should be fired. This isn't a place of medical care or healing. It's a government run facility. Nothing more. Digusting.

Madeline Dedios

This is my first at HAMILTON GENERAL HOSPITAL. It was not my choice. I called paramedics and this where they brought me to get treated for Covid. I have been here since Monday Night October 18th. And I'm still here. As you can see from the picture I had to tape a sheet protect my self from the brisk of cold coming from the window. It's atleast 0 Celsius. Blowing on my face a my bed it right beside this window. I've told my nurse he was every understanding about it but he said unfortunately there's no other room to put you in. I'm already having the worst time because of my condition and now I'll also have cold breeze on my back. Come on! There's not enough blanket to cover me from this cold.

Fen Batt

This hospital is a joke. "Nurses" are jokes and don't care about the patient's. I wouldn't wish my worst enemy to be "cared for" at this "hospital". What a bunch of idiots

I had a good experience at this Hospital. I was there on September 8th, 2021. Let me start by saying this Hospital isn’t the newest, a bit old, but it was clean. Washrooms are kept very clean. The triage nurse was very nice, felt very cared for, the staff at this hospital was superb, although I went in on a very busy day, I saw a high level of compassion and care from everyone working there that day, never felt ignored. My Dr was as busy as everyone else, but when he spoke to me, didn’t made feel rushed, I was able to ask all questions and got all my answers. Dr. Drew Bernard, was wonderful. I have to say that because of the extraordinary staff on the day; I can say that I didn’t mind how long it was going to take to have my results back. All process took the average 4 hours but the experience was excellent.

when a loved one unexpectedly had a ohysical traumatic injury, the paramedics brought him to Hamilton General emergency. The emergency doctor saw him within minutes of arriving, and called the orthopedics team into action. X Rays were done and a plan was devised by the amazing team who kept us informed all of the time. There was a short surgery within the Trauma Room and he was prepared for the full surgery the next day. I have sat for hours in several different surgical waiting rooms but Hamilton General's experience made me feel special, and cared for at that traumatic time. The volunteer took the name of our patient. A nurse came from the OR section every 45 minutes or so, with an update for each patient to share with the family. One family had gone to the coffee shoppe to have a bite, and were disappointed to find that the nurse had just left. The volunteer said, "no worries" and called the OR area and the nurse returned and gave them the update. The recovery room staff was also an amazing, sensitive group of people who were so helpful to the patient and immediate family. We are so grateful that the paramedics chose to take the patient to HGH for a good outcome in a difficult trauma injury situation.

My son currently is dealing with a serious ???? heart condition and the wonderful Staff at the cardiac clinic are superb. The MRI nurses were above and beyond, keeping him comfortable with the procedure completed for the tests. I could not have asked for such a blessing during this difficult time especially with Covid19 and all the restrictions and procedures to ensure that we are all kept safe. ????????????????

Fartab Ahmed

My friend's relative was taken there after a horrible accident. So far their experience has been okay. Many people have complained, but the reality is that the hospital staff is under tremendous stress. The government should seriously consider reducing the fat cats in the management and increasing the nurses, PSWs, Doctors and therapists.

The Moor Family (Noor&Mostapha)

The worst, I am in the waiting area and my mouth is burning. I'm literally screaming and in so much pain!!!!!!!

Kate Farnsworth-Kuri

I've had several dealings with the Hamilton General. The hospital itself is good, perhaps needs some updating and more sanitation - but is good. However, my disappointment lies with the Epilepsy Clinic within it. I've been going to a neurologist there for a few years now, and a year and a half ago he said that I could get my drivers license again (after having it taken away due to my epileptic seizures which are now under control). However, I went to take my G1 test again a few weeks ago, only to find out that my license is still suspended. I've called the clinic over 15 times within the last three weeks, and only had my phone call answered only 2 out of those 15+ times. Completely unacceptable.

Max B

Went for a fractured metatarsal after a week on a boot (walking cast). They told me I "was fine" without having me do any sort of weight bearing or ortho tests to see how the healing was going. Sent me on my way without proper diagnoses, treatment, wasn't given any protocols on how to walk with weight bearing was just told "You can walk" and that was it. Hands down worst experience I've ever had in my dozen or so fractures. Doctors were negligent and didn't answer questions. Go to the Emergency room you'll get much better treatment even if it takes longer. If anyone is looking for proper treatment and assessment of fractures THIS IS NOT where you want to go. Sincerely, A very disappointed customer

Mumtaz Changezi

I am 68 and had my heart ablation surgery at HGH. An excellent experience with the surgeon and nurses. I was so happy with one of the nurses I told her jockingly I was giving her 10 stars out of 5. An amazing team.

Mother admitted yesterday after suffering a stroke and a contusion on her head and elbow after falling. The staff in the er, icu and long term admissions where Mother was moved to today are friendly, helpful, fully explaining what they were doing as they were doing it, what the outcome should be, how long before the iv drip would need to be replaced, moved to another floor within 1 minute her nurse showed up and communicated with us to verify the information they have received, thoroughly. Communications are excellent as is the care . Thank you all.

My mother was rushed to the General this evening for emergency surgery and received excellent care. My only critique is that when my elderly father and I arrived at the ward where my mother had been transported from Joseph Brant, the staff at the nursing station ignored us. However the two nurses that came from JB ran to us when they saw us, to facilitate us getting the best of care. Staff now communicated with us and were extremely helpful. IT would appear that all staff are so busy that addressing visitors and family inquiries are way low down on the food chain. I'm ok with that if the patient receives all their attention. Thank you for saving my mother.

olivia sliwinski

CAT scan technicians were great, thank you!

Dawn Johnson

I just wanted to write in about my positive experience with the MRI Dept today. I had an early morning appointment, and I was checked in immediately. The staff along the way were all so kind and positive, which I imagine is quite difficult in a hospital setting. The appointment ran smoothly and I have zero complaints. While parking is pricey, it is what it is! I loved being able to park at the top of the parking garage and walk through the little bridge to the building.

Ecaterina cK

Lots of services offered, a burn unit, neuro interventions, cardiac ICU.

Kal

The hospital provides good services for patients and cares about them

Walter Blagdon

This place is gross. I know we have free heath care but why does it have to be so run down and dirty. All the seats were worn out with cracks and stains. I felt like I was going to be sick from being here

Kathy R

My daughter had surgery there in 2016, spent 2 weeks in ICU from complications and she just had another surgey 2 weeks ago. The nurses/doctors/PSW/staff are very kind and try to do their best in this busy hospital to help you with your recovery, questions, etc. Even the Cafe & Gift shop staff are kind. They have been there for us at our worst time (2016) and just recently. No hospital is perfect but HGH comes very close ! A shout out to Dr. Algird ! He is so compassionate and patience, answering all of our questions. Thank you HGH! xo

G-H-E-T-T-O. Guess, I can't really blame this hospital, can blame it on Canadian health-care though. This place needs some severe updating/sanitation and less GRUMPY workers.

Had a surgery lined up in grimsby, we are from hamilton.....the surgery is my daughters gallbladder, got to grimsby 7am. They took her into day op.... prepped her for surgery....I. v. In, shot of heprin to the belly....wheeled down to the operating room, I kissed her. She (my daughter) came to find me 10 mins later....they forgot to give a test before the operation ( while on the operating room table Passos cancelled my daughters surgery)....50.00 to get to grimsby.....50.00 to get bk home....for nothing. They told us after cancelling our appointment for now the 5th time.....they didn't have room in I. C.u. for her. I'm thinking how incompetent these people are...... surgery is now rescheduled for a month and a half later....poor kid is in so much pain. And if she didn't need it so badly, I would start the process all over somewhere else. It's a shame.

Horrible wait times, we have been here for 3 hours, Not ONE person has been called in to be seen from the waiting room yet! No one to ask for information. Hospital is very dirty. Worse than the BGH and that's saying something. Never again.

Tier 1 trauma centre. When I needed foot surgery, they were prompt and did a great job.

Sally Hughes

Honestly, I have never found a better hospital than this. I live in a different province and would always strive to come to this facility whenever possible. Staff go out of their way to help you. The doctors, especially in The fracture clinic, are compassionate, professional and super skilled. Everyone treats you with compassion.

The triage lady was very unprofessional she cared more about floor mats and whats shes doing tonight ( gettung wasted) then admit an ibjured person..

Steve Francis

I arrived in emerg at 2am. In pain with tendonitis. It's 6am and I'm still sitting here. Is this the Healthcare system Canadians pay for? Anyway that long wait aside the doctors and nurses here were very detailed and treated me well. I didn't have any rude staff at all. Overall other than the wait, was a good experience.

To whom it may concern, My wife and I are very upset this evening after being asked to leave 7 west the step down department where our son, Randy Coburn is. The RN at approximately 11:00pm thought it best if we go home? Our son who is 19 years old had one of the largest JA Tumors removed from his head on Wednesday March 01. In a Surgery that lasted over 9 hours he was taken from OR to Recovery and then to the Step Down on 7 west. Now Randy keeps going in and out and all the time when awake asking for his mom. He is scared upset afraid and wants his mother. So we have been there. Getting rest tag teaming and making sure as much as possible someone is with Randy. Up until tonight no issue. Which brings us to tonight when the short young blonde RN in the Step Down unit of 7 west asked my wife to leave at 11pm as Randy needed his rest. Randy was asking for his mother and you folks ask her to leave? Your own hospital policy says we as his parents are welcome to stay. Stressing Randy out is not helping his Healing process. Do your staff know your own polucies and what's written? My son and wife are extremely upset over both issues and my son is Scared to be left alone without access to his mother as was denied by your staff and your Hospital as she is your representative. He is also scared over what tomorrow morning will bring when the RN Cathy comes back on duty? Reference Hospital Policy: Visiting Hours Visiting hours are open. Family and friends can visit patients at any time as decided by the patient and based on their care needs. Respectfully, Philip S Coburn

My husband died at this dirty hospital. Untisanitery every were. ICU's vistors room furniture filfy, oasis room so dirty . Floors filfy. No privacy to stay with your love one. Doctor eating pistachios and patient in critical condition but I have to sceem to help than monitor shows 54/40 blod pressure. I hate this doctor for the rest of my life now, his a murder. To many jank people hanging around asking for money and it's not safe to be around at the late night. I guess, normal for canada. One ukranian nurse at ICU rud and lasy.

This hospital has various levels of care. The service and expertise is very high in the CCU and the ICU. All of the top doctors and nurses work in these departments. The rest of the hospital is a dumbing ground for the incompetent employees that are in the hospital system at the General. In other areas of the hospital, like the stroke unit, the new rehab building, and the amputee unit the quality of care is very poor. Many of the individuals that work in these units are rude, do not care about patient recovery, and are trying to force decisions on these patients. The social workers in the hospital really need to look at the word social and learn what the word means. They don't really like to work with people and try to come up with a plan that involves family input. They prefer to dictate to people how it is going to be based on their wants and needs. If you have a heart attack, go to the General. If you need care for something else, there are plenty of better hospitals out there.

Jamie Lowry

I have nothing but good things to say about my treatment at HGH. Everyone from cleaners to the doctor's and nurses were all great.

Mona Hutchens

Horrible wait times, doctors are not worth the wait either. Complacent all the way.

This review is also for the Boris clinic at McMaster hospital. In the fall of 2016 my father woke up one morning with swollen legs that had red rashes on both shins. I rushed him to the General hospital where the emergency room doctor misdiagnosed his condition initially as a bacterial infection. Even I knew it was not a bacterial infection because that breaks out sporadically on parts of the body and not as a clear marking in a certain area and evenly on BOTH legs. I was correct because the Boris clinic diagnosed it as a build up of fluid in my father's body. We went to the Boris clinic twice in two weeks and saw two different doctors....for about 5 minutes each. The bulk of the time was spent giving information to the nurse's practitioner. We felt very rushed with the doctors and it was disappointing seeing two different ones over the short time span mentioned. No extra water pill medication was given to us. Fast forward to just after Christmas. The fluid build up in my father's body was so bad just after Christmas that he had to be rushed once again to the General hospital where his condition persisted for SIX weeks until the middle of February 2017 BEFORE ANYBODY DID ANYTHING ABOUT IT. The doctors at the Boris clinic that fall and an entire cardiac team of doctors at the General hospital in that six weeks did not treat the fluid build up to bring it down until finally as a last minute gesture, a doctor gave him a quadruple dose of his water pills and dad lost 50 pounds of fluid very quickly which I believe damaged his heart permanently from the sudden drop and carrying it all around for so long to begin with and he passed away the first week of May 2018. His body never recovered from the initial fluid build up which I believe put tremendous strain on his heart leading to his passing 15 months later when he could have had more time if doctors had acted more quickly. No one discussed the possibility of giving him a larger dose of water pills in the early stage of his condition. The risks of too much water medication are damage to the kidneys because they get dried out. No one wanted to give the medication to him initially, I believe, because they were afraid of getting in to trouble or being hit with a malpractice suit in my opinion if something happened to the kidneys. His kidneys also had limited function but again, no one discussed the possibility of what could happen. If there was a possibility of something going wrong with the medication, just have us sign a waiver. No problem. You're protected. The patient will certainly die if you do NOTHING. Patient's families are just people, capable of listening and coming to a rational decision. We had to sign a waiver in 1993 when my mother had a heart attack and they wanted to give her a new clot busting drug which ended up saving her life. See? They talked to us, had us sign a piece of paper and my mother lived for another 22 years. Dad was not as lucky and he carried so much fluid on his lungs for so long that I believe he died prematurely when his life could have been extended if the Boris clinic and especially the General hospital had acted more quickly to give him the water medication he needed. RIP dad. You're in competent hands now.

This place was a comedy of errors at every turn. Botched surgery, no communication, no organization. An embarrassment to hospitals everywhere.

Ron J

I haven't had any bad experiences here and appreciate their service. With all the government cut backs I still believe the staff here and in the many health care facilities in our city, give their best to those they serve. I feel fortunate to live in a medical focused city with so much care close at hand.

Step Brother broke his leg and was stuck there for 12 + hours waiting on a splint, and while we were waiting a lady was laying on the floor having seizures and not one doctor stopped to help. Universal health care is a nightmare

Rick Haggett

I was here for pre-op work. The place is busy in cardiac care. The lady there at the desk took my health card. Got the info and I sat down. Gave blood, had the ECG then given my file to head down the hallway to the coloured area. I was told to look for someone. Got there no on around. I headed back with my chart. The young lady who took my blood was surprised I was back. I told her there was no one there. She came with me this time. We went down looking for someone and she could not find the nurse either. She told me to sit in the waiting room there in the hallway. I did. Minutes later comes the lady who earlier took my health card and forgot to give it back. The lady I needed shows up and we go in. She takes all the info and tells me about my upcoming surgery. I filled out a form in the first waiting room which was the wrong one. So she went and got the right form and filled it out for me asking questions. Once done, I thanked her and then headed over to McMaster. Thats another story.

Amurin Rahman

I would give 0 stars of I could. I came into the hospital with severe head pains, almost felt like an aneurysm. The nurse on duty was a total b*tch and scolded me for screaming with pain and to 'tone down the hysteria', as if I could control the spasms at will. I have never met such insensitive healthcare professionals in my life. I would advise everyone to steer clear from this place. Its a dumping ground for incompetent and soulless nurses.

Satinder Kaur

Amazing Hospital, health care workers are very nice and professional.

Tim Timar

My mom was admitted to the ER today. Thankfully she will be fine and was able to go home. The staff in the ER was amazing, kind, friendly and caring. These are crazy days and I was dreading the hospital experience for mom, but it turned out better than I thought and better than I would expect. So to all the staff at Hamilton General, thank you for taking such good care of my mom. Special thanks to Nurse Jackie you are amazing and thank you so very much.

Gloria Mills

I can;t believe some of the negative comments on this review page. My husband had Triple Bypass on Mon. from the Heart Investigation Unit to the Surgical team, ICU and the nurses, PSWs and doctors on 5 South they have been professional and very caring. This hospital is there to save lives it is not there to be concerned about you parking problems. If you have to park long term you can purchase a pass. They will even have someone escort you to your car if you fear being attacked who knew.

M.N

I really don't know what emergency service means to this hospital how come people in emergency wait for that long before being seen by a doctor someone would die waiting for medical assistant I really hate coming here since in my last 2 visits I had to wait for 5h before seeing any doctor and the last time I fed up and left after 4h without getting any help and preferred to suffer at home better Emergency means that someone needs immediate assistance otherwise he would go to any walk in clinic which gives much better and fast assistance but unfortunately they don't have the capability to deal with critical

Jeremy Shantz

I went with severe abdominal pain 1 month post surgery and was ignored for 3 hours before I left to seek treatment elsewhere. If I had been having a heart attack i would have died. Its worth going somewhere else if able. I will never trust their triage ability ever again.

Sean Gratton

I came in suffering from frequent and chronic severe abdominal pain, and rather than run any tests on me whatsoever, the doctor claimed I was just constipated, sending me home with a fistful of percocet. Two years later, after suffering the whole time, on and off, with no proper diagnosis, I needed emergency surgery to remove a dead section of colon that had slowly deteriorated, having never been diagnosed. It was a severe case of diverticulitis, which the doctor would have found evidence of, had he simply done a CT scan as requested, rather than giving me attitude and rushing me out the door. I want to sue, but it took too long to nearly kill me. I was a day away from death.

Peter Luce

I dont understand how can anyone put a negative review here, this is a hospital, they help people, they save lives.. Great experience here!

Jay Reid

Just an appointment at regional rehab

Very inefficient and the ladies sitting in the office have bad attitude. Incredibly long waiting time.

Ariana Glazier

Uncompassionate nurses.. I can’t even come up with the words to describe this .. nurse even laughed after making my arm hemorrhage

Pathetic. Most inefficient hospital in Hamilton. Don’t blame government funding, it’s just poorly managed. Waiting for results of a blood test shouldn’t take 4 hrs no matter how much money the government gives them.

Absolutely horrible hospital. They dont care about the patient or the family. Dirty place as well, i feel as though this place should be shut down. Today I went to the Hamilton General Hospital for same day surgery and felt every one of the staff (including the surgeon and anesthetist) very helpful, friendly and attentive. They went out of their way to answer my questions, alleviate my fears and make my stay as comfortable as possible. The instructions that were given prior to my stay were very detailed and helpful. We parked in the underground parking and followed the directions which I have to say were well marked and easy to follow. All in all I found the Same Day Surgery at the Hamilton General Hospital on Barton Street the best Hospital stay/visit I have had for a long time. My thanks to all who work there and if I knew all their names I would surely mention them, so I chose not to mention the few I did.

Victor Dauphin

Doctors were good, stitched me up good, -2 stars for the hours I spent bleeding in the waiting room after the ambulance dropped me off and more hours waiting in between procedures

Hamilton General is the absolute best in cardiac care you can get

Ashley Fleury

Going on 5 hours of possible cardiac issues and we have only had an exam and questions asked. Maybe instead of pushing more and more people into the Green Zone you get help the people that are in here already. They also have No idea when we can leave. AMAZING.

Diane VanStroe

You make an appt which takes months with the fracture clinic only to wait over 3 hours. Apparently we need to respect their time but they are 100% negligent about our time. What makes it worse was we didn't even see the dr we booked with. Living out of town added 3 hours to a horrible experience.shamme on you for disrespecting your patients.

The Hamilton General Hospital (HGH) is a major teaching hospital in Downtown Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, located at the intersection of Barton Street East and Victoria Avenue North. It is operated by Hamilton Health Sciences and is formally affiliated with the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University. HGH is one of the largest cardiac surgical centres in Canada, performing over 1,600 open heart surgeries annually. The hospital generated C$182,000,000 of research income in 2013, second to the University Health Network amongst research hospitals in Canada, and representing 14.8% of its income. Founded in 1848, the hospital became a part of Hamilton Health Sciences in 1996 when Hamilton General, Henderson General, McMaster University Medical Centre, McMaster Children's Hospital and Chedoke Hospital merged. This union formed one of the largest teaching hospitals in Ontario, operating across four sites with approximately 8,000 employees and 1,000 physicians. Other hospitals soon followed. The hospital is equipped with a rooftop helipad (TC LID: CPK3). Hamilton General Hospital is a regional centre specializing in cardiac and vascular care, neuroscience, trauma and burn treatment, stroke and rehabilitation. It is home to the state-of-the-art Dofasco Heart Investigation Unit; one of the province’s few rooftop heliports; a Level 1 trauma centre and the second busiest burn unit in Ontario. Also located at the General site are the Regional Rehabilitation Centre and the David Braley Cardiac, Vascular and Stroke Research Institute. The David Braley Cardiac, Vascular and Stroke Research Institute is a research centre located behind the Hamilton General Hospital. It is home to more than 400 staff and researchers. The new building with 200,000 square feet (19,000 m2) opened 11 March 2010. At least 250 new jobs will be added to the local economy. David Braley, for whom the institute is named, contributed $10-million towards the project.

HAVING TO WAIT 12 HOURS FOR A SPLINT IS WORTH IT IF ITS FREE. MY FATHER WAS ADMITTED WITH EMERGENCY SURGERY AND THE STAFF HAS BEEN WONDERFUL. PERHAPS THOSE THAT ARE COMPLAINING WOULD RATHER SPEND $3K INSTEAD OF WAITING. WHILE YOU WERE WAITING PEOPLE DIED THERE. SMH AT RIDICULOUS COMPLAINING. I AM TOTALLY HAPPY WITH THE CARE MY FATHER HAS.

the hospital is lucky to get that. that is because of one nurse. i was degradedby nurses and my privacy was breached.

This hospital is a absolutely horrendous, how does emerge take 6hours for someone to get seen? We are going to emerge for a reason! The nurses are generally rude and you'll get maybe one nice one. But absolutely ridiculous

Green Jacob

Truly amazing and empathetic staff, best hospital ever! Called ahead to make sure it was safe to bring my baby and they went there and beyond to help me. The security guard was seriously the nicest person this planet, she was extremely polite and helpful. The administration was extremely friendly and efficient and wow the doctor and nurses made me feel validated on my medical needs within a very timely manner (less than 3 hours wait) this place was worth the 45 min drive

Karen Stockwell

Hard working staff who go over and beyond for patients :)

I went to emergency with a blood clot in my right arm. I told triage and the emerg doctor that. The doctor wouldn't send me to have an ultrasound, said she couldn't see anything but to take a picture of my arm if it turned dark purple again; like that would do any good! By the time I got an ultrasound by my family doctor, I had been walking and working with a clot that could have given me a pulmonary embolism for 3 weeks. The moral of this is, don't leave if they don't believe you or won't do anything. I'll be more insistent next time.

Poor patient communication. Trying to support a family member experiencing cardiac issues who had to return to this hospital after surgery was an exercise in frustration. The surgeon would walk past the patient without taking the time to discuss the situation. They talk about team but in the end, fail to communicate in clear specific terms. Why all the tests? What are you looking for? What were the results? The family was surprised at the sudden release and scrambled to accommodate. If not for a kind nurse who took the time to explain things we would have been completely in the dark, despite numerous efforts from the family. As someone with significant experience with several hospitals, their approach to patient communications is without doubt the worst I have ever experienced. They would do well to revisit their process and look elsewhere for successful models. The level of frustration was completely unnecessary and avoidable with simple changes.

carol overing

The fracture clinic at the General is beyond belief; wait times of 4 or 5 hours are unacceptable in a caring and civilized country. The gap between Doctor speak and Patient understanding is huge. Urgently needed is more space in the whole unit, more facilities for the patients who are in pain while they wait, and more staff, i.e doctors and nurses. In my experience, Xray technicians are the kindest people who work there.

I would like to say thank you to the Doctors and Nurses (especially in the Step-Down ) unit for the best treatment possible. I saw my surgeon on Monday and was operated on by Wednesday. They do what they can with what they have! Not their fault the government keeps cutting funding! I'm 51 yrs old so I am approaching a time in my life when I might need their assistance and help! I'm terrified that the help might not be there if the God Dam Liberal government keeps on cutting more and more funding!! ( Don't vote Liberal next election) The Nurses at the General work their asses off! These mostly ladies (some men) most of the time are doing the work of 2 or 3 Nurses because if they keep on letting Nurses go who do you think has to pick up the slack! Come on people cut those Angels Of Mercy some slack and a little good manners goes a long way with NURSES people!! You don't have to be snotty to a Nurse either! No I'm not married to a Nurse and I'm not going out with a Nurse either if that what many of you thought!! Just used General as an example!! All Nurses with Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joe's

My daughter is a second year student at McMaster. Her family lives 4 1/2 hours away, when driving in good weather. She developed a rash after Christmas break and had the good sense to hop on a bus and go to an after hours Clinic. The doctor diagnosed cellulitis and started her on antibiotic cream and antibiotics every four hours. He stressed that if the rash spread or she felt worse, she was to go to emergency immediately. Within 24 hours, there was much improvement. Unfortunately, within 48 hours, the rash had spread and was very red. She took an Uber to Hamilton general where Doctor #2 told her it was just eczema and would not even look at the photo diary she had been keeping to monitor the rash. Doctor #2 told her that Aveeno would be her best bet!!!! That is when I drove at 2 am to meet her and take her to Doctor #3 who confirmed cellulitis and changed her prescription to a much stronger dose and ordered blood work and reinforced that she HAD to go to emergency immediately if her condition deteriorated. I am still with her and if needed we will seek help in emergency...just not at Hamilton general.

I recently experienced a visit to this hospital with my 88 year old father who needed heart surgery. The Doctors were very good with him and some of his nursing staff were good. I know how busy the staff is in certain areas and can understand being under stress but I do not understand the sheer ignorance of some of these workers who treat you like you are nothing but a pain in their behind when dealing with the public. My father was kept overnight and myself and my two siblings called the hospital in the morning to find out his condition. I think that would be a most common practice from his children. Upon reaching the switchboard both myself and my sibling were greeted with a nasty ignorant person who obviously hated her job - she was quick and harsh and should never have been dealing with the public in any capacity. After a struggle I was connected to the area where my father was a patient and someone that sounded like they were on the verge of hysteria answered the phone. When I inquired about his condition I was told that this was the second call they had received that morning, that they do not answer questions over the phone and to keep the calls to a minimum and from one person on a contact list. It was like I was being told off for inquiring about my fathers condition. I was astonished at such treatment and I feel that any member of the public that wants an update on their loved one should be entitled to hear an update without being treated as if they had no right to inquire. This inquiry was about the issue of his condition and if he would be released that day due to the fact that someone would be coming from out of town to get him and needed notice as soon as they knew. Nothing but sheer ignorance and impatience with anyone that dare ask for any information. The switchboard staff and the people that answer the phones in the separate units need to make a huge change and stop being nothing but nasty and smart with the public. I or anyone else inquiring about their loved ones condition should never be treated in such a terrible way. Shocking to say the least. If they cannot do the job and at least be a little pleasant, they should not be doing that job. No need for the ignorance displayed to the public

E R visit Feb 7/20 I spent about 4hrs which I realise is normal , But at the end of my exam they gave me a form and diagnoses was put as sore throat . I am 81 , have had many serious surgeries and would never go to a ER with a "sore throat" it was more than that . I had painful ear aches , shots of pain going up behind my ear and jaw and up the back of my head , =right side . I had tried pain meds and gargle but nothing relieved pain . So I just wanted noted that this was not just a "sore throat" as stated on the form .. Ronald James Winterfield

I visited Hamilton General on the Aug 26th for a breathing test at the MDU and unfortunately ended up causing a code blue due to unforeseen issues. That said, I’ve lived to tell my story! I’d like to thank all those doctors, nurses and admin staff for the care they provided throughout my partial day of stay there. Given the strain placed on all healthcare facilities in Ontario, it’s challenging for these folks to keep up a pleasant demeanour all the time. But they did exactly that at this facility, starting with the techs who recognized my complications (thank you, Michelle and Nicole), got me the right assistance, to Dr. Thom(p)son in ER who finally signed me off as fit to leave the hospital. It’s an old facility that’s rattled with COVID related constraints, it can’t be easy to keep everything in order. But, all of you did a great job. I pray for your wellbeing, and that you continue to stay safe and keep assisting people like me.

This is the best hospital I have ever been to! I have very complicated autoimmune/inflammatory issues that no one has ever been able to diagnose… until now! The amazing dr’s and nurses were incredible, kind, caring and went above and beyond! They were some of the first people to ever take my health issues seriously and say “we will not give up until we can figure this out and help you.” And they did! They have given me my life back! I cannot say thank you enough! And while my medical issues will never really go away, the ER staff has done an incredible job of making the hospital a safe, caring place to be when the conditions get out of control. Seriously, this place is amazing! ❤️

Currently here for trauma to the leg, and I've been waiting for 4 hours to get results that should've been somewhat immediate, as I am still bleeding from the leg and nothing has been done about it other than a cat scan :) oh you're gushing blood??? Let's take your blood pressure and not stitch you up asap

Bill VanPelt

My wife had to go to the hospital. The food is un-edible. They don’t do anything on the weekend. She was there for 4 days seen a doctor for 5 minutes, hopeless instructions, and no follow up. To top it off they exposed us to COVID. So now we’re quarantine for 2 weeks. How incompetent can you be.

Randy S

Worst ER experience we’ve ever had and we’ve been to a lot of them since our son has hypotonic cerebral palsy and bronchiectasis. My wife had a car accident and was taken there. They didn’t clean any of her wounds. She had glass in her hands and her scalp. She took the glass out of her scalp herself. She told the nurse there was glass in her hand and the nurses response was ‘all those small pieces of glass will eventually work themselves out of your body’. They did a CT to check for broken bones and stuff, checked for concussion, but she left with dirty cuts and scrapes and bleeding knee and bleeding scalp with dirt and debris all the two wounds up there.

I was just in Hamilton General Hospital after my car accident and the entire hospital was awesome!! From the top doctor to the cleaning guy and everyone in between were amazing!!! I went from the ER to Trauma 6 South in room 4, and the whole Trauma team in the ER were quick, professional and kind, then I was transferred to the Trauma department on the 6th floor, and I made as comfortable as possible but I still had a neck collar on for my safety. The next morning, the doctor in charge of clearing the spine damage came in and told me that she come back in the afternoon and hopefully remove my collar, I told her I couldn't eat with the collar on, she went out of her way to read my scans asap and came back in 10 minutes and she told me that I could have my collar off, it was a game changer in my comfort and she knew it, hence why she made such a huge effort to try and help get the collar off me as fast as she could, her name was Doctor Jasmine. Then my nurse for the day walked in and introduced herself as Laurel, she, to date is one of the kindest most compassionate nurse I've ever had! The other nurses that took care of me were so eager to serve me and take care of me! Their names were Vittoria ( so cheerful), Bead( no nonsense, but kind and caring) Matt( so eager to get things done quickly and carefully) and Jen( who shared in my joy of being able to go home) just to name a few of the amazing crew of nurses that stood round the clock to take care of me!! All the porters, and scanning/testing crews, the cleaning guy and the physiotherapist who took care of me, were so kind to me and treated me like one of their own!! The cooks did their best to cook good food and you could tell in the quality of the food, it was the best hospital food I'd seen or had. To everyone at Hamilton General Hospital both if I named you by name or if I forgot your names( I'm truly sorry for forgetting your names) or if I never knew your names, THANK YOU SO MUCH for all you did for me during the time I was there and for all your kindness and compassion to me! I wish you all the best in life! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to each and everyone of you!!

On a Thursday morning at 1245 my husband went to receive medical care at the general. His leg was very swollen, rash and incredibly painful. Upon arrival he was greeted by the screener. Being that it was so late we are assuming it was a nighttime screener/ triage nurse. When he explained all his symptoms on why he was seeking medical attention the nurse told him that it would be a waste of his time to see a doctor. It was heat rash. Take some benedryl and go home. My husband tried to say no but the person was very persistent that it was nothing serious. My husband was back in his car by 1am. It took going to another hospital to find out it was a BLOOD CLOT in his leg. Turns out he really was in need of medical attention. He is now being taken care of at a different hospital and thank goodness for that. Thank goodness this story ends well but I’m sure for some it’s not always a happy ending. The nurse who turned my husband away, shame on you! Shame on you for not taking his symptoms seriously and possibly causing him harm. If I could give no stars that would be my vote but 1 is the lowest I can go.

I went with my Aunt to one of her appointments at the 4 East clinic. When we got there, the front reception Leann was very nice, happy, helpful she definitely made my Aunt feel better about the visit nice place and very nice girl at the desk. I had to let it be known.

I can see that leaving a review is pointless because it will get me nowhere.. I will just say that my daughter was in a motorcycle accident that nearly killed her and left her with many broken bones, cuts and scrapes.. She was barely there 24 hours and the staff on floor 6S was in such a rush to clear beds that they told her she had to go.. .Even after her saying that she wasn't able to care for her self or even walk... Sue is physiotherapist and should be fired I don't even think she should be able to work in the health care system ever again... She needs a major attitude adjustment.. Sue I watched the care you gave my daughter and you really should be ashamed of yourself .I am really unsure how you sleep at night. And again I know this review is pointless because the only response I'm going to receive is " if you would like to make a formal complaint you can do so at... ".. . I just hope someone really has a good look at what's going in this joke of a hospital. Also thanks for not showing us how to properly use the air casts and handing us the instructions and telling us to read it.. That shout out goes to Ruben another so called physiotherapist .. Maybe a career change is in your best interest. Final word for this place is TERRIBLE.

Darrell Sandmoen

The staff at Hamilton General are some of the most expert and compassionate people I have ever met. My 95 year old father was recently there for a delicate and complex procedure. The staff went way above and beyond to make my dad as comfortable and confident as possible. I can't say enough about the fine people I like to refer to as "angels of this earth".

One of the worst Emergency Hospital on earth, took my kid around 1am and the Doctor came to see around 6am. The Doctor passed at least 5 times in front of me. My child was crying of stomach pain and the so called Doctor had no feeling what so ever. After me asking for Doctor as 4 hours had passed, the nurse gave pain killer. I humbly request the management not to mention it a Emergency hospital please

My daughter was transferred to Hamilton trauma center after a fatal accident. That was 22yrs ago. She was in a coma for weeks and apart from a brain injury and internal injury was not expected to live.THANKS TO THE WONDERFUL STAFF AT THE GENERAL she beat all the odds, I can't thank them enough, I have my daughter with me still.

Was there last week for the first time with sever pain and discomfort from a UTI/blood in my urine. When I got there, there was one person in waiting room and one brought in by ambulance. It was 12:30pm, a lady comes up to me asks why I was there and to wait that someone would be with me Shortly. Well 30 mins after my arrival waiting in discomfort a women behind the desk came to register me after been out on her smoke break. I sat down and waited for my turn in the waiting room. 2 hours waiting I got up to ask for the rest room and how long was wait time. Because I wasn't seeing any doctors or anyone being seen the two ladies behind the desks were litterally hiding and chatting for the longest time and finally I has to press the ringer to get their attention. As I needed to use the rest room. While there 2 more people were brought in by ambulance and another walk in. Upon my return I asked the person already there before me how long they have been waiting and she said about 1.5 hours, lady at the desk told her it could be a 4-6 hour wait. Buy this time It was 2:30 and nothing I'm thinking my husband has to be up but 4:30 to get ready for work my children can't be left alone while I'm here. So I left in pain peeing Blood. This hospital needs a big Wake up. Conclusion I will Never go to this hospital again.

Nurses have a lot of patience/compassion, I know I was a difficult patient, but they always treated me with respect, even when I was whining and demanding. They always took the time to talk to me and explain what was going on. Doctors were fantastic .In fact everyone I had any contact with was great !

Beth Varady

I went to the ER with bleeding *down there* that had been going on too long and was way too heavy. Everyone was kind, but I was left sitting there in a gown for about four hours, before a lady came in, looked, and said there was nothing there, before taking blood samples and leaving me for another four hours. Of course I passed out, I hadn't eaten anything or had anything to drink since the night before, and I had lost a lot of blood. I woke up ages later when a doctor with a thick accent came in, laughed at me, and asked if I was tired. They said nothing was wrong with me and prescribed ADVIL. I then walked home. It stopped after that, I didn't need the stupid advil, but I will never trust a doctor again. Especially not this hospital.

I am a patient in the Neuroscience wing, Dr. Barbara Connolly is my specialist. She's kind, caring, and invested in quality of life for her patients. Also, I ended up in the Hamilton ER for herniating a couple discs in my lower spine. From the nurses, to the Intern who was looking after me, to the radiology team who took such great care of me, helping me while they were taking x-rays... they put my comfort first. They'd ask if I can get into this position or that position... I'd do it, but when they saw how I was straining to hold the position, they'd make me lay back down and rethink how to do it without me suffering so much. They were all just simply amazing, The ER doctor came to see me when I was almost ready to leave, and I felt her genuine concern for my comfort and care.

Danielle Brett

To the nurse who was rude as hell with me earlier tonight when I called to get an update on my Mom Betty Geroux, shame on you for being so rude and unpleasant by hanging up on me and lying to me as to the fact my Mom isn't there. I hope you never have to go through what I'm dealing with. As to Mom's nurse Darlene, thank you so much for being a prime example of what every nurse should be, I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me updates on my Mom.

Ben Shopey

All the staff are very helpful and caring. They have taken good care of me and my family for minor and major emergencies. Thank you for your bravery and devotion especially during this pandemic

Syed Ahmed Milad

Very nice behavior by the staffs and short waiting time. The overall environment is fantastic.

There were two people including my mom in the emergency and it still took 3 hours. On top of that they put a thermometer in my moms mouth instead of using the one that just scans. How is that safe right now !??!

We had to wait for a week for my father to be admitted. That's a reflection on our system, not this hospital. He had a twisted drill procedure for a subdural hematoma. The procedure was nothing short of miraculous. The doctor(I believe it was a resident in addition to a surgeon) spoke to the family about the risks preceding the surgery and then after with the great results. My father then stayed for about 5 days after the procedure. The nursing care was completely excellent. We thank Mike, Mary Ann, Mercedes, Isha?, Kai? sorry about the last two, my father mentioned them and so it was a little unclear. Just cannot say enough about the level of caring and professionalism from the staff on floor seven. Just Wonderful Thank you so very much.

Fred Monte

I was in hospital for 6 days and found it the most discusting ever. The ER was filthy and staff were overworked. In all fairness to workers and care givers , I could not asked for better care. The room I was sent to 3E room 5 was a disgrace. It needed many repairs.and the room was so crowded there wasn't even room for me to have a chair to sit outside the bed. The nurses were excellent and very helpful. The food was not fit for an animal. More money should have been spent on the wards instead of big beautiful lobbies.

Worst place ever! Can't believe they care less.... Great service for taxes paid. A patient just walked out as the wait is over 4 hours and everytime the nurse has to say one thing," we have only 2 doctors and they are very busy, don't know how long." My husband lay in severe chest pain and no attention was paid. I asked for medication and the nurse says no point it will not help as it did not help him at home. Seriously these doctors and nurses should put themselves in the patient position and think. Always on cell phones and nibbling something like it is not a job but a picnic. SHOW SOME EMPATHY AND STOCK YOUR BATHROOMS WITH SOAP.... IT IS A HOSPITAL AND HANDWASHING IS VITAL .... There was no soap in the bathroom and the nurses had all the time to stock but wait they were on a never ending break.

My father was recently in Hamilton General Hospital for spinal surgery. The care he received was beyond expectations! Every person we encountered was caring, compassionate, and just amazing. Parking was so convenient, covid screening upon entering the hospital was quick and so friendly. Our family sends Thank you's for making this scary time such a wonderful experience.

Why are your employees parking on Murray st,dont you have parking for your employees. When you go home is someone parked in your driveway? Everyday atleast 9 cars from your hospital think that it's ok to park in front of our houses. Dont theses people get money for parking? If so ,does that mean they are parking on our street and pocketing the money?

Ryan Eccleston

Dislocated my shoulder and was sent home and told I was fine, went to a new hospital the next day after pain continued and was told my shoulder was out. How does a emergency room at a hospital send someone home with a shoulder hanging out of its socket and assume everything is fine?

Izzi Wong

Went in to emergency room with my boyfriend. Understaffed, taking forever it's been 4 hrs and counting. There is no one else here.

Naglaa Hassanein

I’m currently in the emergency room with my elderly mom. When I asked when a doctor can see her, I was told by the nurse that their priority system is as follows: First priority: if you are dead Second priority: is you are nearly dead Third priority: everyone else ??!?!?!?!?!?! I was shocked and told her well I hope my mom is never a first priority in this hospital!!! And that they would need to attend to her to prevent her from being one. She did nothing! How could a nurse say that?? And isn’t it logical that they need to attend to the high risk patients to prevent them from becoming a “priority”????? I know I pay so much taxes and so do all of you. The least we expect is timely healthcare and healthcare professionals actulasly living the “core values” of the hospitals. Now, I’m just waiting and praying that my mom will be attended to before she becomes a “priority”

In a nutshell, had an appointment for 11:15 am and did not even make it passed the reception area until 3:30pm. The employees at the reception area simply lie to you regarding your wait time. Yes over 4 hours of waiting time with an appointment. The so called "Free health care system" at it's best.

Mrz Fear

I'm here right now , been here since 9:30 am , with a ruptured eardrum , it's now 12:15 , no attention given at all , this is the second time , first time I was having a severe asthma attack and 4 hrs later I collapsed and my son had me rushed to a different hospital , because they told him they need him to go back and sit in the waiting room and be patient

ER nurses are rude. Nicer staff and professional, rapid care in the trauma bay. Nurses nicer on trauma unit and ICU and more professional. Its just the ER nurses that are garbage and uncaring. Probably overworked and burned out.

The EMERGENCY nurse great. Then they moved my mother to the express unit where a nurse name Chris was very rude and rough with my mom. She feel and hit her head and she was rude about it. Oddly inconsistent experience over all. Some nurses and staff very supportive, they will do what they can. Others, rude, in your face attitude. Whatever I guess, I suppose its to be expected, some people carry their bad attitude from visitor to visitor. Not really going to get into the mess of mixed information they gave us as well and coming back and 'correcting' them selves.

Thelma N

I spent four hours waiting to see a doctor while pregnant and in such pain that it was keeping me awake and I hadn’t slept in 24 hours. This hospital is understaffed and can’t help people. The nurses also sit outside in front of the non-smoking signs and smoke right where patients walk into the hospital. It’s shameful.

Josh Mercer

I got a prescription from a doctor that no one is accepting due to a "bad signature"

Jennifer

compared to all of the hamilton hospitals, the care and staff here are amazing. should be placed as a primary example for quality care.

Kenan

The whole team in cardiac surgery ICU took really prompt and attentive care to my needs. Erin stood out even more as she was very kind and assertive in anything that I needed. She felt like family with her positive attitude and care. She knew everything about everything and explained to me how things worked before she did them. Shes really smart and good with her hands and had a perfect attitude.

Terrible. Monday afternoon about 5:20 arrived haven't even had some talk to us and it's been 2 hours. The health care system is in a mess here. The CANADIAN government has destroyed it. There patient system for calling patients is just terrible. They have a speaker that is barely clear and so low with a little back ground noise from children and the TV you can't here them call your name. The worst care in the city. Go anywhere but the general hospital in Hamilton if you value your life Duane Dietz

Dr V saved my life when my brain ruptured 4 years ago and as far as i*m concerned there are only miracle workers employed on that island of hope called HGH. A million thank yous to all.

Gerri2020

I had the unfortunate circumstance of spending a week at the CCU with a loved one. I have to say the Doctors were great. The nurses fantastic. Adriana, Donna, Julie, Cindy and Harry thank you all for your kindness, compassion and empathy. All of you so genuine and real during this tragic time. Wendy on the other hand needs to take a walk down the hall and re read the signs on the wall of all the goals of HGH for families. Or better yet retire you are a very angry person. No bedside manner what so ever. Did not even introduce herself. I asked 1 question and got the nastiest look and was told I got this! Been doing it for a lot of years and walked away from me. Nurses like this belong in a ward where someone is getting a cast on and the patient is out in a few hours. NOT in a life and death department where families are distraught and trying to cope. Shame on you. I am glad I mentioned you to another nurse and was told I do NOT have to have you back. So keep that in mind people. You have a choice.

W & W Musselman

My husband suffered a brain bleed July 4th 2019. Excellent surgeons, doctors, nurses. Thankyou to Dr. Wang and his neurological team, so kind, understanding and always patient with my questions. Never did he and his team make me feel like I could not talk with them. They never rushed me and gave above and beyond care. The team always gave great confidence my husband would make a full recovery. Thank-you also to the ICU nurses and the 7 west floor step down unit. You are all the best.

By far the best hospital in then Golden Horseshoe area ( Oshawa to Hamilton Sincere, compassionate, skilled, and dignified treatment and very very thorough treatments from ALL of then staff of nurses and doctors. O happened to have family in Hamilton and had to make an emergency visit. I live in Scarborough and the hospitals here are rude staffed, sloppy treatment, ( I walked out after a 2 day stay because of insult and prejudice from a new nurse on staff---they didn't remove the IV and my friend who picked me up was a a nurse and she quickly dealt with that. # weeks ago they discharged me even though when I went there I could not walk. 2 security guards took me by wheelchair to a bus stop 2 blocks away and left me there. My son arranged an UBER and the driver assisted men ack to my home.. Last visit the nurse lied and Sid I wanted the IV out--I said no such thing and asked her to put it back in...she said No, you are drinking water and juice. I HAD NEITHER as I was only there for 2 hours. Next morning shift a very kind and good young nurse was shocked that notes said I wanted IV removed . She quickly reattached it and said you need to keep that on for at least 10 hours. Because of my condition I sometimes go through periods of frequent hospitalization. Out of 12 doctors only 2 were good--out of about 20 nurses only 2 we're good. The hospitals are the Centennial and Scarborough General. Nastiest hospitals in all of Toronto You're better offf at ANY Medical clinic ( Malvern for example)

Absolute worst hospital I have ever had to experience in my life. Blood splatter all over the emergency room for hours that nobody bothered to clean up, the place is disgusting and needs major sanitization & work. Crack heads all over the property causing so much problems screaming and yelling and terrifying poor innocent people. I had to wait 7 hours and left without being seen, nobody's name was called to the "green room" for over 3 hrs in the ER. I understand there are bigger situations but hire more staff. This is ridiculous, I wonder how many people have actually died in the waiting room - no matter what your situation is they just don't care. Don't come here unless you want to waste your time and go home unseen by a doctor.

F K

My experience with my PVR test was amazing. I have visited many different hospitals- the techs were kind, respectful, informed, and answered my questions. They were also on time and time efficient.

Worst hospital experience of my life my money and belonging were stolen from me by someone there and just as I had it narrowed down to who stole it they tried to form 1 me i in 6 days was not allowed to speak to a social worker about my missing belongings and money luckily my amazing girlfriend was able to get there in about 5min flat and rescue me before they were able to deem me insane ...the food is terrible and all comes out of something plastic pre prepared in 6 days I got "fresh" apple slices once .the room I was in was disgusting I've seen cleaner bar washrooms ..police report will be filed ...awful experience..thank you to my nurse joanie she way awesome

J

Totally understand the urgent nature of a hospital and I rarely attend them for that reason however my 18 year old son had severe pain in an area that we were told by medical staff could be very serious and to have it attended too right away.....we are now into our 12th hour waiting and still no diagnosis. Six hour wait to see a doctor, three hour wait to get an ultrasound and we are still waiting for the results. Thankfully the staff have been very nice. Next time we will go to a clinic and hope this isn't something serious or life threatening.

Was taken in by ambulance with SVT. Took a while to go through triage because of the many ambulances coming in. Got there about 8 pm was home by 3 am. Thanks again for great care. Thank you Dr Sarder, Dr J and Cathy.

Very very poor and care less. I had surgery in December 2019 at hospital and same problem happened after six months. I booked appointment and saw to doctor. He said to do surgery again. It is now more than 8 months and, I didn’t hear anything from doctor. I couldn’t sleep well because of pain since 8 months and I don’t know how many more. This is how they are treating their patient. Absolutely poor service. I was there 5 hours before someone even acknowledged me. This kind of hospital leaves a sour taste in your mouth. They need to be trained a little more in customer service. Sorry.....a lot more

my husband had an appointment at 1:30 p.m. with the fracture clinic I just received a call from him and he is still waiting to be seen, this has been an hour now i would have to say that he is not having a very happy time and these people should do some work instead of walking around talking and laughing( as this is all i could hear in the background when he called) This is not a very good way to make your patience feel respected!!!

Kendra Mcdonald

Absolutely ridiculous waited in emergency for over 3 hours with many people being seen before me who were there after me never seen service like this in my life also had waited over an hour just for the fellow beside me name to be called when we were the only two people left in emerge There was also a rude security guard at the front desk (for covid screening) when I had asked the lady next to him if there was a washroom she said yes and he rudely bugged in and told me no Your running a hospital here so act like it and this was just NOT it

Milan Dosen

Terrible experience, appointment time is useless...

The level of caring which myself and my dad received during his stay there was excellent. From the registration clerk to the OR staff and ICU nurses and doctors I felt informed and considered and confident that my dad was well taken care of. Although he didn't survive, the consideration given to my dad, myself and my family was exceptional.

Melissa B13

The staff here are very dismissive of legit pain and treat a lot of the ppl seeking help as drug seekers.

Ryan Kloosterman

Absolutely nightmare.... I was sent to ER by my surgeon for post surgery complications. I spent 4.5 hrs there for them to tell me my issue is not an emergency. The er dr there on june 30th 2020 did not even exam me. I had the charge nurse say out loud - I guess we are at school with all the children here today. I was upset and raised my voice bc they were dismissive to me in my issue. I told the intake person I was a recovering addict and that I DO NOT USE OPIATES AT ALL but I had the er physician's offer me opiates 2 separate times. This was an absolute nightmare... just to let you know that I have no issue adding your hospital to my lawsuit against the mesh companies. If I cant add you I have no problem to sue you guys for what happen last week. Reason my surgeon said to go to ER is bc my left testicle is dying and that if it completely dies I will become septic. The ER doctor agreed that is a very serious issue. But were not willing to give me the mri my surgeon says I need. (I have 1 booked for aug21 and that was booked in march) so bc of being sent away from your hospital without being looked at properly your hospital is liable and will be held accountable for these actions from your ER DOCTOR AND HIS STAFF (Fyi to the hospital - my lawyers are looking into this situation and you will be hearing from them very soon.) The er doctor and the charge nurse should be suspended / fired for malpractice No one needs to be treated this way. And with these attitudes they need not be in health care I went to er for some help and got sent away like I was pill seeking junkie... not the case as I stated b4 I do not want your drugs!!! I want help in fixing these complications

Lucky Ramesh C

Wish I could give NEGATIVE review. Lady at the front desk had no manners and don't know how to treat the patients. My wife was having some issues after the pregnancy and our family doctor gave us a letter and told we can go to any emergency hospital and show the letter, so that they can admit her. But, this lady insisted to admit my wife and said we have to go the hospital only were the baby was born. Luckily my wife delivered at hospital which was not far away from there and we went over there and got admitted. My question is, what if my wife delivered at a hospital which is in different city or far away... CLEARLY THE LADY WAS NOT WILLING TO TAKE US AND LOOKED "RACIST"

The worst hospital I’ve been too........ EVER! Waiting literally god dam 9 hours with extreme abdominal pain without ever seeing a doctor. Thanks for nothing.

Got bit by a dog and got a rabies shot right away. The entire emergency staff is great. Would 100% recommend if you need medical treatment! Thanks!

The problem with this hospital is the ward where patients are parked while they wait for avrolm. This health care facility is OVERCROWDED, as result patients wait for hours, days and weeks to receive the care for which they were admitted. The staff in this section is overwhelmed by the overcrowding and their need to go about their routines and duties take precedence over any feelings of empathy they may have possessed at one time. Our father was transferred from the Oakville Hospital to this hospital Trauma Centre for an MRI, and we were told by the unit staff that on weekends the MRI technicians don't work. When we attempted to ask one of them for details, making it clear that we were looking for specific answers that go beyond "I don't know," one staff member became defensive and told us so by using wrong verbiage. We merely informed her that patients have rights and patient families have the right to ask questions or clarification about anything that is not clear. I would like to suggest that Hamilton General department heads provide their staff members with some training on how to answer patient and family questions. Many of our questions were answered with, "I DON'T KNOW." It is not difficult to see why this answer is unacceptable. We found The intensive care unit to be much better. Our father was finally transferred to this area and the staff and doctors were wonderful.

My aunt suffered a stroke we brought her in and 35 yrs experience doctor said she would not live past 24hrs he told the family. Many wonderful doctors and nurses o of the best hospital around just this one bad apple doctor needs to take a hike It has been 4 months since last posts MY aunt is alive and getting better This goofball doctor of 35 yrs needs get reality check dont listen doctor when comes to the life of love ones most just go by the book not heart

If you’re thinking about coming to the emergency, just expect to wait 6+ hours. Also, don’t be surprised if they send you into a dirty room. The room I have been waiting in for hours with my husband who requires stitches, has wrappers all over the floor, and there is someone else’s blood left on the table.

Since COVID-19 theyve been sending $45.00 fee with AMBULANCE CHARGE NOT COVERED BY OHIP, a statement. Sent to those admitted to emergency, although we havent use an ambulance. Please explain.

Calling the hospital for information led to being put on hold through the automated attendant, then being disconnected. Whoever is managing this vital source to connect loved ones to the outside world doesn't care to uphold this hospital's reputation.

The nurses at this hospital are good. However had the worst experience with Dr. R D Bowser who was supposed to be operating on me today. Spent the entire day at the hospital since morning and at 6 pm while still on the intravenous drip was informed by a nurse that the surgery has been cancelled. No sign of the doctor who did not have the basic courtesy to inform us personally. A tiring, frustrating experience! Very disappointed with the lack of concern Dr. Bowser has for his patients. No plans of rescheduling another appointment with him.

November 12 2018 my family Dr called ambulance for me because my BP was high and so was my pulse. I was then taken to Hamilton General because I have a type B dissection in my aorta. I was put in the cardiac ER room and there for overnight observation on my BP, then morning came and BP cuff came off and I was switched to a different room and waited there for ever no nurse came and talked to me at all. Finally vascular Dr came and ordered a CT scan for me and I had informed them that my BP had not been taken for awhile and they went and talked to the nurses. The nurses still did not help me at all or pay any attention to me and still did not take my BP. Then the nurse ordered me into the hallway where I sat for 20mins bawling my eyes because I still have this chest pain and no one cares. I was left long enough that I had enough time to get change take out my IV and leave. I still have no idea why I have chest pain and what the ct scan results where.

The staff are very helpful and compassionate. The ICU doctors and nurses are incredibly dedicated to their patients and supportive of patient's loved ones. We are extremely fortunate to have health care of this calibre in our community.

I really don't know what emergency service means to this hospital how come people in emergency wait for that long before being seen by a doctor someone would die waiting for medical assistant I really hate coming here since in my last 2 visits I had to wait for 5h before seeing any doctor and the last time I fed up and left after 4h without getting any help and preferred to suffer at home better Emergency means that someone needs immediate assistance otherwise he would go to any walk in clinic which gives much better and fast assistance but unfortunately they don't have the capability to deal with critical cases like hospitals

As I am writing this, my daughter is a patient on the cardiac floor. 38 years old and had to have heart surgery. Her room was a mess when we went to see her. The nurse that my daughter Miranda had yesterday was very rude short and no compassion what so ever. 5 hours it took before she finally came in and that is because we buzzed and buzzed her. She had five bad nose bleeds yesterday. We asked to see a doctor so she could fill us in on what was going on with our daughter. The nurses attitude was what you want me to pull her out of surgery... Unbelievable. The doctor did come in and fill us in. The doctor was so nice. We thank HER for her kindness and caring and for taking the time to speak to us.

Recently my spouse went with shoulder tendinitis pain to the ER. My spouse was made to remove her mask to allow the nurse to take her temperature. Why did the nurse not use the touch-less forehead thermometer considering that we r experiencing the worst kind of pandemic these days. This attitude is highly irresponsible and demonstrates lack of concern for the patients. Who would be responsible if my spouse contracts Covid 19 due to this callous act by the nurse?

Horrible experience... Was suffering from an allergic reaction but thought it was related to something else. Doctor asks me what I want done. Treated me like a waste of time and told me to get some sleep. Got a second opinion and was told that I was experiencing an allergic reaction. Would not recommend going here if you want to be treated like a human being.

such long waits like most hospitals and some rude nurses that should probably retired along time ago to give some students a chance with there career and who would be more socialable and not so miserable

Born at St Joseph’s even though I have never had any issues worth complaining about at any of our city hospitals my experience at the General Hospital has always been professional I know that when entering any hospital that my experience and stay is and has been what I make of it but the General hospital experienced staff saved my life because they recognized my symptoms immediately and treatment started immediately. Thanks again to all the staff from triage all the way to the green room and labs.????
