REVIEWS OF Central Island Veterinary Emergency Hospital IN Nanaimo

Alex Tanaka

Dr. Ashton was amazing! However the male vet we got the next night was rude, inconsiderate, and said "there's nothing to be done with our puppy" and sent us home, when the other vets said to come back for more testing.

Graham Weatherby

Very understanding staff, and our vet was knowledgeable and fair. Yes pricing is on the high side, but not too high for emergency service anytime of the day or night. 5 stars for compassionate and timely pet care - our labrador received top-notch attention.

RAINER KOSCHZEK

Holiday weekend so only clinic open in immediate area. Somewhat happy with the assessment of my dog's condition. However we had a big glitch. Vet failed to give me one prescription. Had to drive back, 70km round trip. When I took it to a pharmacy to have it filled, they found that no quantity was indicated and refused to fill it. They contacted the clinic, but no vet there as willing to authorize the prescription and the vet who wrote it would not be in for five days. Really no excuse for all this as the practice was not very busy when all this happened. At this point, there has been no improvement (3 days) so I am taking my dog to regular vet as soon as possible.

Thank you kindly to all members of CIVEH for your thoughtful care and service.

Rob Larter

Great and friendly staff. Even tho she was obviously very busy, I did not feel like the vet rushed my time there.

Sara Dobbyn

My cat has been here multiple times and has been in the hands of multiple doctors- every time has been smooth and effective. Staff is always very happy to educate, answer any questions you may have, and keep you well informed about what's taking place. All staff are well trained in handling stressful situations and always give their best for our animals. Very happy with the services provided :)

Shirley Antonelli

Thank you Central Island Vet for your kind service and help with our Lola.

Desiree Webber

Thank you for removing Otto's Tick, receptionist went above and beyond!

Alycen K

Dr. Walsh was fantastic! When she entered the room she came and sat down on the floor and we talked for a bit "just as two regular people", as she said. This approach really helped put my dachshund and I at ease. She was kind, caring, passionate, friendly, and thorough. The last time we went here we had a terrible experience with a different doctor, but Dr. Walsh really went above and beyond to make sure we felt comfortable and cared for. Every Veterinarian should aspire to be more like her. -Erich and Lulu

Just thinking about Sadie's departure day...I thank everyone that was empathetic. But the staff member who took her away from me, was brusque and barked at me to stay in the parking lot. (We only left for an hour, as I called in and you said it would be an hour. Her manner was not pleasant. Thank you for letting me tell you my experience. Thanks again, as the other staff were professional and kind. Catherine Clark

Dr with British accent that took care of our dog was great. Took the time to explain things & was conscious of our budget restraints. Recommended a whole food diet and reasonable methods of illness management. ???? Other doctor on staff quoted $1700+ and was not very compassionate ????

Erin Sowerby Greene

Not impressed with the service

Kane S

I just got my guy back, "Benny" after emergency surgery for a bowel obstruction. CIVEH was absolutely wonderful with the level of care they provided for Benny. Sure it's never cheap especially when it's urgent, but my concern is for my companion animal and best buddy. The vets and staff at CIVEH exceeded this with their care and compassion during Benny's stay! Thank you for everything. Kane, & Benny.

Ricky Carr

Very kind and compassionate people

Sabina M.-Swan

Fast service - no appointment necessary or even possible. Solved the problem. Nice, friendly & knowledgeable people.

Highly recommend to anybody needing Emergency Veterinary Services. I was away for a few days and had a friend looking after our dog, Dixie. My friend called unexpectedly in the middle of the night to let me know that our dog had an issue. The dog was in incredible pain and needed to go to the veterinary, luckily my friend had seen this before and knew what it was and how serious it was: a twisted stomach which is fatal if left untreated even for a few hours. We live an hour and a half from this veterinary clinic, so while the dog was on route I talked to the veterinary office and they let me know how much to initially look at our dog to confirm my friend's amateur diagnosis. The veterinary office was ready when Dixie arrived and took her in immediately to confirm the issue and let me know the immediate risk for Dixie. I was quickly informed about the surgery needed and quoted an amount for the surgery. I okayed everything and gave a deposit and Dixie was taken in for surgery. The next morning the office called to let me know that Dixie had made it through her surgery and was doing well. We picked up Dixie the next day, in surprisingly good shape for having just had surgery the day before. A couple days later I received my final bill. To my surprise the veterinary office ended up sticking to the presurgery quote once the entire job was completed. So our Dog is home, and running around a week later as if there was never any issue. Thanks Central Island Veterinary Emergency Hospital!

Yes, they are expensive. They have to cover overheads, including expensive diagnostic equipment and staff working through the night. I took my alley cat there last night, and the treatment and communication was excellent. I also watched them deal with a very tense and traumatic situation with grace and compassion.

Michelle Thurlow

The reception staff and Doctors are great here. They are very good at triaging and know about how long things will take. We have taken 2 of our cats here and have had excellent service. If you have insurance, they will do the paperwork.

They helped the dog but the vet didn't introduce himself and was surprised that my sick pet wasn't friendly.

READ THE REVIEWS BEFORE TAKING YOUR PET HERE!Took my dog there last Sunday as he was pooing blood. I was told he had a minor bowel issue, given medicine and charged 300$. He died 3 days later right in front of me. I was never offered an xray to see if he had bowel cancer or a tumor. I told the Dr, he was drinking an unusual amount of water and was losing weight. Now my BFF is gone forever and I am a mess! BEWARE!!! DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE GOING THERE! THEY ONLY CARE ABOUT MONEY! It`s now been 6 weeks since they killed my dog and I am still a complete wreck, I miss the little guy sooo much

Phillippa Dean

Dr Nik is hands down the best vet I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with. He takes care of my girl to the best of his abilities every time she's needed medical care, I cannot recommend the service enough.

Amanda Barker

The best team on the island! Dr. Bell has taken care of both of my cats and has been nothing but kind, caring, and compassionate. He is calming and reassuring, and makes the stress of an emergency visit minimal. 100% recommend!

CoCo Bezjack

We loved the care and treatment of our dog, Ziva. She took sick very quickly and Dr. Laura Field was able to attend to Ziva very quickly, her and her team were beautiful. Their kind hearts and devotion were very evident and well received. I know Ziva was in great hands when we walked in and left her for the night and her operation. In the morning Ziva was 100 % ready to go! Thank you!!

These people were great when my cat was hit by a car

Zero stars. Good to see others speak up and share their disappointment with this place. People should know and we should all speak up for better service and rates. What is happening here, and with all vets frankly, is nothing short of extortion, too bad this is the only emergency option after hours. Rude and condescending front desk staff. My 14 year old dog is in end of life care, she is on pain meds prescribed by a local vet, and we ran out because the bottle is white and the contents can't be seen. I explained this and they would not fill the Rx and wanted to charge an exorbitant exam fee on top of the 300% or higher mark up on meds. My dear old dog just needed her meds, they've been working for her, they could've consulted with her vet, but no, and so she suffered because of their greed. Caring more about getting as much money out of everyone, not really caring as much for the pet. Shame on all vets taking advantage of people to the max in their hours of need. I go the extra mile in my work, over and above, but apparently that is not common practice. Would it have killed you to give my poor dog the meds that are keeping her comfortable until her last day? Seriously, I am still livid.

Sadie Morrison

over the course of 4 days two of my dogs were sick both late at night and needed to have veterinary care right away. The first time Dr Nick Ball was our vet and he was so incredibly reassuring and informative. he took the time to answer all my many questions and even sent me home with printed out information aside from the regular at home care info, just things he thought would be helpful. when we brought our other dog in a few nights later it was very busy but Dr Ashton made time for us to see her and also to call us personally and keep us in the loop. The wait was long that evening but they went above and beyond to set time aside to ensure our pets were taken care of when they could have turned us away due to the capacity.

I found a baby bird that was too young to fly. I called their office and they refused to take the bird. The stupid woman suggested I feed it cat food and asked if I was going to keep it. I explained to her that cat food is inappropriate and it is illegal to keep a wild animal as a pet. THIS PLACE IS USELESS AND I CAUTION ANYONE WHO MAY CONSIDER TAKING THEIR PET HERE. ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE. As veterinarians you have an ETHICAL and MORAL RESPONSIBILITY to help animals that are sick, injured and or in distress and you FAILED MISERABLY. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Is it because you wouldn't make any money off a wild animal? I will never bring any of my animals here and will make sure to pass on my interaction with you. Please go out of business

sammy Mcivor

Helped my sick cat who was not eating for a few days, puking and had bad diarrhea. The staff was very informative, helpful and compassionate with the circumstances and informed me of all possibilities and important needs for the well-being of my cat. All medications given were precise and correct. Staff looked at every possibility with the correct procedures due to the symptoms and blood results and came to an educated, well-presented diagnosis. Awesome aftercare instructions and suggestions to set my cat up for success. No one wants to see their fur baby in pain or just not themselves. I would hands down recommend CIVEH no matter the circumstances! Thank you to the lovely staff and Dr.Field for tending to my Kitty. I'm pleased to say as soon as he got home he went straight to eating and drinking water again and back to being his bubbly fun and loving self!!

Ryan Chapman

Great place, friendly staff. Helped my dog deliver the pups.

Great staff. I'm glad it's 24 hours. However, pricing is ridiculous - way to costly so I recommend only use in emergencies

Gillian Goerzen

What a wonderful team! We had a scare with our Mini Aussie last night. One of his pupils was pinhole and the other dilated. They took him right in and observed him. He thankfully resolved naturally, but the team was so helpful and so kind throughout the whole process. From the call to ask if we should come in through to the discharge! Thank you!

Genlisae

We have had to make four visits(along with visits to our regular vet) in the past 2 weeks with a sick and accident prone kitten too young to be vaccinated yet. We saw a different doctor for each visit and all were great. I have seen many complaints about price but I did not find that to be an issue at all. I was honest upfront about my available budget though they never even got close to the limit and with free follow up appointments it was actually less than the charge would have been from my regular vet.

Leah Jones

I love Central Island Emergency Hospital, my only wish is that they could be my regular vets. The staff is wonderful, sympathetic and thorough. Thank you for everything you've all done for my fur babies. Best of care!

Irene Bergen

We don't know what our dog ingested but the assessment and treatment was thorough. We were given assurance that he would be ok and he is. The vet and staff were very kind.

Evan C

My cat became very sick on a Sunday evening. These Dr's and staff were extremely professional, compassionate and overall rock stars! Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Anyone needing veterinarian assistance will be very very happy.

Wendy Devlin

My Chesapeake bay retriever was attacked by another dog last Christmas while visiting my dad and they took awesome care of my Chessie. Made sure there was no damage to his muscles as his armpit was ripped open. It was a long day as with any emergency room human or animal but they were great. Today I got a call that my dad had to take his rescued Chesapeake in as his health had declined rapidly. And his blood count was already being monitored. 7 months they had each other and that dog had never been happier! Today was his last day. Most likely a health issue from before. I know they did everything to help my dad through such a difficult decision and was there for Toby in his final moments. My dad told me he forgot to ask for his tags back which he had made for his chessie. I called them from Alberta, and asked if there was any way to put them aside or mail my dad the tags(going back he already told me would be difficult). They were very understanding and said they would mail them. I am so grateful as I would have had a tough time coordinating from Alberta, for someone there to pick them up and deliver them to him in Chemainus. Absolutely amazing staff and vets.

John Dane

Alanna the Vet Assistant at this location is excellent at her job. She was very friendly and knew what to say to my friend when his cat was about to be put down. I was blown away with the level of compassion this entire team had for the animals and despite a sad run in, they are very talented and I would return.

Agathe Bernard

I had to come here in the middle of the night from 3h away for my dog after I was told to come asap for possible kidney failure. I believe the treatment was good but my review reflects the way the situation was handled. I felt like I was literally bullied and accused of being irresponsible for my dog when he actually is the number one priority. There were no empathy, understanding or even a simple follow up to see how he was doing. I feel like I could have had a conversation with the vet over the phone and avoid a full night of driving, waiting in my car outside the clinic and worrying. It is not ok to take advantage of people's emotion when their pet are in need. I would urge your clinic to have better practices.

Susanna B

I haven't visited with my cat, but we live on a rural island with limited evening ferries, and the vet hospital gave good emergency advice over the phone to me, since I couldn't bring my cat in right away. Thank you!!

Breanna MacDonald

Very friendly staff, i expected it to cost a lot more with all of the negative comments. (Its actually very reasonable) Overall i'm very happy with my experience bringing my ferret there.

Jamie Sumpter

Not friendly at all. Wouldn't help our dog because we didn't have any money. What a shame to do to an animal all because I couldn't pay at the time. Disgusting

Lynette Meek

Quick, professional services by the receptionist and veterinarian. This was our second visit. Everything was explained clearly and we were able to make our decisions based on the information we were given. Sophie ( our beagle) is recovering nicely. ????

Lana Harach

Made a diagnosis on my dog before even laying hands on her, or judging her symptoms themselves. Tried to pressure myself and a family member into making a big decision (major surgery on an old dog) without all members of the family being involved. Only with multiple requests did they give us an estimate of the full cost of the surgery - not just the testing to determine if our dog was eligible. (All together would likely be over 2 grand). There was absolutely no discussion or consideration from the vet in case we did not want to or could not take this path. When we decided to bring our dog home and talk it over with the family as she did not seem like she was in much pain - the vet did scare us with the image of a horrible death of our dog if we didn't immediately go into surgery. Before leaving we asked for some medication that might ease any pain/uncomfortableness that she may be experiencing. We were given antibiotics to help fight a guessed infection. No treatment/medication was given for the symptom (constipation) that we originally went in for. Front desk staff were nice and considerate, and the vet did supply us with information sheets on what she diagnosed my dog with. (She's doing much better now after some rest, TLC, and some premium wet dog food!)

We had an emergency situation with one of our pooches a few days ago. I couldn't get through on the phone to our regular vet or the emergency vet line. I was told about completing the form on their website for intake. We ended up rushing our pup to the clinic and because I had completed the online form and said what time we would be arriving there was someone there waiting at the door for her! They have such a busy hospital and service the entire North of Vancouver Island. Yet everything was smooth and fast. The processes that they have in place to triage and streamline care are very effective and the vet she saw was incredible! All the staff were absolutely amazing and on the ball with every client that I saw. Everything from start to finish was smooth and easy during a really traumatic time. Our pup may not be here had things been handled differently. They are an incredible team! Communication was awesome, they were fast and very caring and though I was really worried about my dog being in strange hands they were beyond incredible with her. Highly recommend them for any emergency and totally fill out the intake form online. Such a great and effective process. I cannot say enough positive about the team! Thank you for everything you guys do every day <3

eryn arsenault

Very kind and considerate staff. Were very pleasant to work with and they took very good care to make sure we were as comfortable as we could be. Very grateful for their work.

Shana Watson

Brought my kitty here today and we saw Dr. Bell - he was fantastic! Gentle with my cat and super quick getting us in and out the door. The receptionist was lovely as well. Reasonable price when all said and done. Would go back and will be recommending for sure. Thank you!

Cindy Griffin

We had to put our old dog down over the weekend. The staff was kind and very caring ♡

Theresa Hopkins

They where great with my dog. They are expensive but they were kind didn't try to make me feel bad and did offer me a less expensive options. I would recommend going there if you animals is in an distress they are opening 24/h and have all the diagnostic equipment right there.

Our 2 year old Golden Retriever Kevin spent some time with the lovely people from Central Island Veterinary Hospital last night. What a great group. Mariah, Amber and Dr. Natasha Leamy were all amazing to deal with and we were so thankful to have this service available to us day/night. Thank you all so much!!!

Marie Mullins

It took 4 hours to see a vet when we brought our dog in at 8 pm, meaning we had to wait until midnight just to see someone. This clinic was much more expensive than our regular vet in Victoria - although the vet told us a return check-up would be included in the cost, he failed to tell us we had to return within 24 hours or there would be an additional charge. My dog developed an ear infection after being there, which he has never had before, and I believe is due to the medication the vet prescribed. I would not go back here and would not recommend to anyone else - better to drive to Victoria if you need emergency care for your pet.

Johnathan Lewis

Even though it was a tough time the staff were very friendly and helpful. Thank you

Manda D'Amico

My boyfriend and I had to bring our dog here about a month ago after he suddenly passed away, so I can't speak to what the actual veterinary care here is like. However, the staff we did speak to at the front desk were so so so incredibly kind, patient and compassionate to us as we grieved. We admittedly felt very overwhelmed when it came to making decisions regarding our dog's cremation/remains, and at no point did we feel rushed or like we were taking too long to decide or being a burden on the staff. We'll be forever grateful for that kindness and understanding as it allowed us to really process and make the best choices. They even made sure to ask if we wanted to keep his collar, which we initially completely overlooked. If the staff we spoke to are any indication of the caliber of vet here, we wouldn't hesitate to bring our pets in again.

Monika Marguerite Lux (BalanCHIng)

My cat Lilly was in so much pain and I was scared I would be ripped off again like at Lighthouse Veterinary Hospital who charge for the time the cat is at their place. But I had a pleasant surprise here at Central Island Veterinary Hospital. Although it was a Sunday, which calls as "emergency", I was neither charged an emergency fee nor anything for the 6 hours they kept her there. The costs for the examination was totally reasonable and Dr. Trish Mackie is really wonderful, very empathetic, knowledgeable and friendly. Thanks for taking care of Lilly and helping her heal.

Jillian D

Unfortunately our pup needed immediate emergency care. Central Island was extremely knowledgeable and were extremely patient in explaining our options to us. We dealt with multiple doctors and staff there over the period of 4 days. Each and everyone one of them were caring, knowledgeable and professional. Dr. Westcott performed our dogs amputation. Everyone has remarked on the incredible job he did. It has been just over 2 weeks since her surgery and she is back to her old self again. I can't thank them enough for their expertise, the care of our dog and answering the multitude of questions we had. Your job is not easy and you deserve the utmost respect. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts!

Nina Zurita

They get the job done. But charged me $700.00 to watch my cat because more urgent patients kept getting prioritized. $2300.00 later, I was not happy...

megan phillips

They're the only vet in Nanaimo open 24 hours They took in an injured owl I had found on the weekend at 1AM. Very grateful they were able to help him

Ernie Olson

As our local Vets in the Cowichan Valley do not provide after hours care ... at all, we have had to come here at least twice looking for emergency services. I am thankful that there is a place like this available, given that the alternative, in one of our situations, was to simply watch our beloved pet die in our arms with no other recourse. The staff here, although often pressed by the needs of patrons, are always professional, patient, understanding, and as prompt as possible.

Weapons Of Orion

I wanted to thank the staff, front and vets, for taking care of Kyuss. She was in a bad way with a serious infection, and then post op the infection persisted and alternative course of antibiotics was needed. The staff were very accommodating and caring, as our girl is highly social and intelligent, we were most concerned about leaving her alone all night in recovery. Well it was clear that everyone there cared about her wellbeing, both caring for the trauma and her mental wellbeing by regularly spending time with her, phoning us after the surgery to report on the successful procedure, and the post-op followup later in the week was also appreciated since there were concerns. Well, we're very pleased to report that, after the second course of antibiotics, she has made a full recovery and is back to her healthy, happy and snuggly self! It was a very stressful situation that was handled well by the good people of the civeh and I want them to know their care and effort is very much appreciated. Thank you sincerely.

Huge rave to Central Island Vet! It was hard to say goodbye to our 12 year old Rabbit, but his time had come. The staff there were absolutely amazing, showed nothing but compassion and care! Thanks for making a difficult time a little bit easier. ????

Laura Klaws

Kind, compassionate, real. They care about your pets health and they really understand how hard it is on us.. while I was told they dont offer treatment with payment plans etc.. my experience despite being extremely stressful, scary and worrisome.. was nothing but reassuring and positive coming from them.. they did not offer or suggest anything unnecessary, and told me things to watch for in the next few days. While not exactly her words I was reassuringly told by the lady that helped me.. "there are so silly questions" and reminded that she would be there all night if I was worried something my baby did was abnormal.. she really did her best to help my mind not only my baby and I really appreciate the kindness she and the doctor had shown me. Thank you so much. I appreciate you and your work.

Joanne Spilsbury

I’ve been to this clinic with seven of my twelve cats and dogs in the last four years for various emergency situations and finally feel as though I have an accurate take on the qualifications of this business and the veterinarians to give my two cents worth on a review. I find this clinic indispensable and value the expertise of the various vets we’ve been lucky enough to access. While not every instance has ended with the happiest of ends, I feel this is to be expected as the very concept of an emergency situation is one with unpredictable outcomes. I greatly appreciate the desk staff, health techs and veterinarians who always have shown compassion and understanding alongside their competence and knowledge. Thank you for being there Central Island Veterinary Emergency when I’ve needed you most.

L M

Amazing, Professional Service! Had a middle of night emergency with one of our dogs and was extremely happy with how they got the dog in immediately for treatment and at a reasonable price. Thanks!

Chris Desautels

Great help and friendly staff. Bit expensive though, as it is meant for emergencies. Overall, I would recommend if it's and emergency.

Sonya Halan

Do not take any small puppy to this vet. The vetranarian doesn't know how to insert an IV on small animals. Many pets including mine died because it was not available for dehydration. I found my 6 week puppy very lethargic and I gave him electrolytes to give energy to him. I rushed him to the hospital and told them he was needing fluids. They came back into the room telling me that the vetranarian was unavailable to find a vien to insert the IV. I told them to keep trying. They brought my lifeless puppy back to me and I asked what was on his face on either side of the mouth. They said they tried to insert fluids by mouth. I was previously doing this at home but brought my puppy for IV fluids as this is the best and fastest way to get them safe from danger. I checked my puppy and there was no visible sign of them attempting to insert an IV. My puppy was not given the life-saving treatment it needed to live. I am the one now that has to feel guilty for doing what I thought was the best thing for my pet. Please take your pets to the Island vetranarian on Bowen Rd, they know how to insert IV fluids and save your pets life.

Gave them 1 star for being open 24h. Otherwise, I was floored at the pricing they charge (in my case, euthanasia and cremation). Same service was $100 cheaper at two other vets. When I made reference to the price, I was asked "is money a problem for you?". I would've been interested to hear what offer she was proposing (BOGO, possibly?), but I'd had more than enough by then. Try Applecross Veterinarian instead. Very pleased with that place.

Ripley Janzen

Took great care of our little Luna, we’re very accommodating on such short notice, and the staff was super friendly and informative. This place was amazing.

GET A SECOND OPINION I had one dog put to sleep after bringing him in, he was in distress for sure but I question my judgement after taking my other dog to them about 6 months later. The diagnosis was,"things would not improve" and I should consider having her put to sleep. They prescribed pain meds until I could make the decision to put her out of her misery. A little over a week later she was back to normal, running and jumping around. This was a couple of years ago. She's still running and jumping around. They did not take the time to get any history on her, just jumped to an uneducated conclusion. If you've been going to this vet for some time and they have gotten to know your pet and have a good history then maybe they are fine but... If you're going in on an emergency situation, get a second opinion before you do anything that you can't take back. I will never go back to this place no matter how many good reviews they get.

Caroline Hale

A huge thank you to Dr. Bell and to the entire staff at CIVEH! Our Labrador got into an animal carcass and was rushed down to the hospital to induce vomiting. Staff worked quickly and efficiently from the moment we arrived. It is obvious that they truly care for animals and want nothing more than to help. I can't even imagine the stress they endure working in such a busy hospital. Thanks again for helping our boy!!

Brent Pattison

Very expensive seemed more interested in the money then helping my sick pet

Janelle

By far the absolute WORST customer service i've ever had. The women at the front are rude and not compassionate at all. To make a long story short... I brought my cat's urine sample in and paid over $60 to get it tested and they just didn't do it, they "were busy and the sampling time frame had past." But instead of calling me so i could get another, they didn't say a word. They had zero intention of letting me know about THEIR wrong-doing. My cat suffered for NO REASON for 3 days because of these goofs. Finally i got my cat the meds he needed after spending over $200. This place is a joke, and i highly recommend going ANYWHERE else but here!

There are truly no words to convey our deep and heartfelt gratitude for the staff at Central Island Veterinary Emergency Hospital. Last weekend our beloved 4 y/o golden retriever suffered mesenteric torsion or knotted intestines. The staff met this rare condition head on, quickly diagnosing it via X-ray and got our Beau very quickly into life saving surgery. The post op care was perfectly performed, while the staff also answered all the questions we had, and provided us with easy to understand answers during a very confusing time. Upon discharge the staff gave us thorough directions and instructions for his at home care, again offering 24 hr support if needed. We highly recommends this outstanding vet clinic to give your fur baby the best chance at life and recovery. 5 stars isn’t nearly enough stars for their professional and competent care.

Lovely, kind, and professional team. They were really great with our dog, but also really great with everyone we watched walk in the door. That was a lot of people on a holiday.

I had to go here, due to an emergency situation with our pet who is diabetic. I was very hesitant, having previously read some Very Negative reviews on Google, but as with most clients, this is the Only Veterinary Clinic that is open on the weekends and evenings, there is no other option in this area. I mentioned the negative reviews to my companion and said that perhaps some of them were negative due to the sometimes unavoidable bad/sad outcomes of their pets health. I intended to be open minded and to give an "unemotional" review of our experience. There is handicapped parking and entrance, double doors and a level floor in the lobby, also a handicapped unisex bathroom directly off the lobby. The lobby is clean and tidy. The receptionist was Very helpful and efficient. She is the Only person who introduced herself during our experience with the clinic. We gave the receptionist the information about our pet, she asked some detailed questions, then someone came out from the back and took our pet with them. The receptionist escorted us to one of the treatment rooms, after 1/2 hour "someone" came in and told us that they would like to do an x-ray, and we gave permission for that. After another 45 minutes the same unidentified person came back, told us our pet was stable, but they wanted to keep it overnight, for further testing. I asked if we couldn't just take it home and return as needed for the tests? She told me that our pet was in "Extreme Pain" and that she couldn't "in good conscience" release it until she was sure that the pain was reduced and wouldn't reoccur. We said fine (not having any other options) . We went back to the receptionist, who presented us with an estimate of costs of $900.00 "payable immediately" , we were told that this was only an estimate, if actual cost were more or less, it would be adjusted when we returned to take our pet home. We were told that we would be contacted in the morning, be given an update on our pets condition and would find out when we could bring it home. We did Not get called. I called at 11am was told ( by another mystery person) that the pet was fine, they were going to take one more blood samples to check her blood glucose level soon and if all was good we could pick it up by 1pm. We were also told that we would have to monitor the pets blood glucose levels at home, at least 4 times a day. I said that we had never done that before, so would need some instructions and advice on how to do this. We called at noon, then every hour after, I was told that the blood glucose test had been done at noon, but no one had the time to get the results yet...??? We were finally told that we could pick up our pet at 5pm. When we arrived the receptionist, once again introduced herself and gave us an invoice, she explained the charges (including the 2nd days boarding fee, since the animal stayed past noon). The payment was adjusted as needed and we were free to go. I said that I was told that we would have to do blood glucose testing and I was told that we would be given instructions on how to do it. The receptionist checked in the back room, told us that the Dr (?) I spoke with earlier wasn't available, but she (the receptionist) would do what could to help. She printed some information sheets for us, she brought out a blood glucose monitor and test strips and explained how to use them. I told her that our regular Veterinarian had said that they take blood samples from the pets ear and asked if she knew anything about how to do that, she said no, as she was "just" the receptionist. In my opinion the "Receptionist" is the Only person in that building who has any idea of how to act like a Professional or how to treat the clients of this business. The invoice we received said nothing about the animal being in pain, or any treatment for the"Extreme Pain" we were told it was experiencing. No mention of any after care for the pain? It felt like our pet was taken hostage, with made up symptoms to justify additional fees. If you have any other option, do that. This place is a rip off.

My dog ate something that he shouldn't have last night. Without a second thought I looked up the number for the emergency hospital and drove him there while on the phone (connected to hands free speaker). By the time we got off the phone, I was practically there. They took my dog immediately into the back to start treatment. I don't know what I would have done had they not have been there. My dog is in excellent hands today and is recovering. I doubt he would have been here today if they had not been there to treat him. Thank you!

Shaunessy Hutchen-Lay

This was an absolutely awful experience. I was there to support a friend and I have never seen such absolute disregard for what my friend was going through. They made her wait well over 3 hours. Came in with a bill for over 800$ and blamed her regular vet for the issues and raised her voice and ran out of the room slamming the door. This was absolutely awful. It's horrible that she has no where else to go!

They are so professional and caring I had to take my dog kenai in for emergency he didn't make it but they gave us the best service wonderful vets and tech and staff

Lindsay H.

Dr. Sitara was amazing. She gave is all the options and plenty of time to figure out what was best for our kitty, and when the time came, his transition into the next life was peaceful. The staff were all very kind. I really appreciated their compassion in such a sad time for us.

Stormy Sweet Huggins

I'd say use for emergencies only. Sadly, we had no other choice and you pay more here than the usual vet, but we couldn't get an appointment in town. Also be prepared to pay up front, before services are provided.

Central Island Vet Emergency helped remediate a very sick cat. Staff was super helpful, friendly and informative. Affordable considering the circumstances. Thank you Central Island Vet Emerge!

Wonderful for an emergency, although they are definately understaffed.

Competent folks, nice attitudes, but very busy and very expensive.

My dog got into something she shouldn’t have on our walk. I was up all night with her! The vets and other staff were amazing. Every time I called them with a question they were there to answer and were extremely reassuring. Thank you to Nicky and the other staff member who was working after Nicky (I’m sorry I forgot your name). You are amazing!

Debbie Lannon

Unbelievable! Sent away before we got in the door.

Very friendly and empathetic staff. Vets know what they are doing.

My dog had TPLO surgery here with Dr. Preston in Nov 2021. It was more complicated than a typical TPLO because there was also a bone fracture. I felt Dr. Preston did a great job, and there was great communication between him/the vet tech and I, especially post-op. They got back to me super quickly whenever I had concerns over her progress and healing. They also reached out to the place I went for rehab, and there was really good communication between Dr. Preston's team and my dog's rehab team. Will definitely come back here if any surgeries are needed in the future.

Baden Dube

Avoid if you can. Have gone twice and had issues both times. Misdiagnosed one dog and said nothing they can do with the other and charge $200 for nothing. Wouldn't have gone but it was an emergency and they seem to take advantage of that.

Roger Denis

Nice to have access to a 24hr clinic. Just wish it was closer to home.

Compassionate and skilled team at this busy emergency hospital - only one on the Island open 24/7 north of Langford.

Ashley Muns

Awful experience. Horribly insensitive, and threatening staff. Dishonest, overpriced and dishonorable veterinarian. You should be ashamed of yourselves for exploiting people for your own gain. You're lucky we didn't record our interactions and expose your business for what it is. Thankfully we left your establishment and found a veterinarian who took care of our dog in a wonderful and affordable way.

Danielle Rankin

From making the phone call that no pet owner ever wants to make until my little guy crossed the Rainbow Bridge, the staff at Central Island Veterinary Emergency Hospital went above and beyond for me and my dog. Words can't express the gratitude I have for everyone there that supported him during his final moments. I drove home feeling at peace knowing that he transitioned to heaven in the most comfortable way possible. The team felt like family, remembering the small details about him and checking in the following day. I can't thank the team enough at Central Island, and highly recommend them during those difficult moments with our furry friends.

Graham Fraser

Big thanks to all the staff at the vet emergency. My kitten had a swollen belly and I was quite worried. They saw him right away and were awesome. Hats off to these heroes for saving my kitten.

Forever grateful for being available 24 hours a day. Very caring and compassionate...in my and my four legged companion's time of need. Thank you to the staff who were there on the August long weekend to help me.

We brought our young lab to Nanaimo emergency hospital on Good Friday. They sent us home with double the steroid dose and painkillers. If they had sent us to Victoria for more diagnostics that day there might have been a different outcome. Our local vet saw her on Saturday and said get to Victoria immediately. Sadly we lost our pup one day later.

Jane Howlers

Do not take your pet here. I cannot stress this enough. Zero compassion in all regards. Very unprofessional. Unfortunately, I had no choice as this was the only hospital open. Biggest regret of my life.

On September 9th at 3:30 am we had to put our precious Copper to rest and everyone at CIVEH we absolutely wonderful to us and Cooper's end of life. I can't thank them enough for everything they did for us and to make Copper comfortable. Thank you everyone for everything you did and how caring you are. Preet Forrest and Family❤❤

The doctors and staff at Central Island Veterinary Emergency Clinic are super stars. They are compassionate, professional and are absolutely focused on your pet's well-being. My four year old cat needed an emergency cystotomy and they went above and beyond for us and our cat. It's great to know they are available at any time to help you through your crisis. Thank you!!

I only gave them one star because there is no option to give zero. I brought my cat in to have a $250 bill to tell me that she had gingivitis. She died the next night. Incompetent, I told the vet she had labored breathing, he told me she did not. He obviously had no clue what was going on.

I called after hours and spoke with Laurie. She was absolutely amazing. She was more then willing to do everything she could over the phone so we didn’t have to drive from Port Alberni to Nanaimo. She looked up to see if there might be a closer 24 hour vet for us so we didn’t have to drive so far. She was so calm and caring. She started a file for me and put all the notes of what we talked about in case The dog got worse and we had to call back and head to Nanaimo. I would recommend Central Island Vet for sure. Thanks Laurie.

Andra Dolan

If your animal friend is suffering, and it is outside of your normal vet's hours, you have very little choice in Nanaimo but to come here. Unfortunately. The young woman at the desk was kind and efficient. The vet, however, seemed inexperienced and had zero bedside manner. Do you know how a professional tells someone that their pet is dying and that there is little that can be done? You don't say, "Like, I'm afraid he's gonna die right here". And then go into the back and laugh it up with your colleagues loud enough for everyone to hear. Fortunately we have had animals forever and were not really upset, just disgusted by the level of unprofessional behaviour.

G Tighe

brought my golden in last week because he was breathing rapidly. Glad to have this service. very kind compassionate people. thank you for being available overnight.

L J

I'm glad we have an emergency vet, they are lovely and super helpful, not to mention the peace of mind you have knowing there's one open in the case of an emergency. We've unfortunately had to visit this clinic a few times so am thankful that they are around. I do wish they were marginally more reasonably priced however as the last day visit cost over $1000.

Thank you everyone for your amazing care and compassion. I’ve had to bring both of my dogs into this clinic and both times I had amazing experiences. I received constant updates from the doctors which was very reassuring, and everyone was so friendly and willing to help during a very stressful time. Thank you Dr. Bell and Dr. Christie for all of your help, and all the staff that took amazing care of my babies!! I feel very lucky that we have a clinic that is open 24/7 around to help us whenever we may need:)

Sadly, we had to let our dog, Buddy, go. He was almost 15 and deteriorating quickly through the night. We brought him in at 5 am and the lady at the front desk was very nice and helpful, over the phone and in person. The vet, who helped Buddy over the rainbow bridge was very kind, caring and understanding. We definitely felt like our boy was in very good hands and I really appreciated, that even with covid, I was able to come in and hold him, while he went to sleep in my arms. They helped make a difficult time less painful.

I had to go to work early monday morn n got my step daughter to bring Bo in to get looked at they got him in soon as they opened and had to put my 18yr old best friend down i already got back his foot print and waiting for his ashes best pet care ever thank you so very much

Yesterday we brought our dog Sophie in because she was experiencing seizures. They tried everything they could for Sophie but the seizures kept on going. At 7am today we got a phone call saying she had a rough night and it would be best If we put her down. Thank you for the care you provided for Sophie

Our terrier started ingesting rocks without our knowledge. The following morning he threw up 3/4 rocks while the fourth continued into his intestine. We brought Jack into Central Island and from the time I phoned and first spoke with Laurie, to Dr. Wang's calm and friendly discussion about what our options were we were confident in the care Jack received. He spent 2 days in care and anytime I phoned for an update, if the vet on duty was busy with other cases the reception/techs would gather the information that was available and provide it to me. I was also pleased to have the late night vets on duty phone and leave messages in the late night hours to update us. Thank you to all of the support staff and veterinarians who took care of Jack, we are very lucky to have this dedicated team in Nanaimo.

Kaitlyn Haagensen

Currently waiting for more information but so incredibly warmed by the staff here . From the manager advising me late at night, to the staff on the phone doing intake, to the vet seeing our baby, I'm incredibly impressed. Everyone has made me feel very at ease that my furbabe is in a great place

We took our cat into the emergency vet clinic at 10:30 pm as she was experiencing respiratory distress. The Vet, Chris Milligan, did not think it was an issue even though her work of breathing was so problematic that she was wheezing for breaths and respirations were 42 per minute. Additionally she had not been eating for approximately 5 days. He asked a few questions and did a very minimal assessment. The Vet determined our cat had gingivitis after my husband mentioned our cat had a lot of calculus build up on her teeth. the Vet prescribed an antibiotic specifically for gingivitis and morphine for pain. Less than 24 hours later our beloved family pet passed away. This was totally unexpected as there was zero communication conveyed to us that this was what was happening with our cat. Now, we can't help but wonder if our cat would have had a more thorough exam and a less dismissive vet if she would still be with us here today.

Kristie K

In the past when I have came there I didnt have any bad experiences but the last one started off fantastic but then by the next day the staff didn't seem as helpful with my cat pancreatitis diagnosis they carried through. Based on getting a second opinion I found that she was missing essentially what she actually needed to treat her and to request it and was denied it. I transfered my cat to another location as her condition wasn't improving. Im so happy to say the 2nd opinions treatment plan worked. I thank central island vet for keeping her alive for the night until I could see another vet but the long term prognosis and central island vets opinions did not work for are situation.

Jared Sanders

Last week I had to bring my boxer, Prince, here for emergency care. They rushed him right in but unfortunately, there was nothing that could be done for him and I had to say the hard goodbye. The entire staff was compassionate, empathetic and did all they could to make the worst situation suck a little less. I hope I never need such services again but if I do, I'll come back in a heartbeat. Keep up the great work, folks.

We brought our cat in during the Christmas holiday as he could not keep food down. We were not sure whether it was an emergency but phoned and received some advice from the front desk staff, who were excellent. Our cat is a bit of a demon at the vet's office as he gets very scared, so he was difficult to examine and had to be sedated. Thank you to the whole team, and Chey especially, for keeping our minds at ease while we waited. He was a low-priority case as he was stable and there were many more emergent cases coming in, but we were nervous nonetheless, and we appreciated the care, compassion, and patience of the whole team in dealing with our very scared little guy (who was, in the end, totally fine!). It was a long wait (which was to be expected in the circumstances, as all other vet offices were closed at the time), but we were very happy we came. Thank you very much for putting our minds at ease.

Lorraine parker

This clinic has been so amazing. They took such good care of our sick puppy. It was a very stressful and emotional time and the staff and doctors were so compassionate and took such exceptional care of our little guy. We couldn't thank them enough and would recommend them to anyone. They clearly care so much for the animals and I was so grateful to be able to depend on them.

Mark Sordi

We called and made an appointment to bring our sick dog in and were told to bring him in in 10 to 15 minutes We arrived at the door and followed the Covid protocol and phoned. They came out about 10 minutes later and took him in. We were told to wait and we would be called by the vet as soon as they saw him. After two hours we called for an update since we were still sitting in our car. The person that answered the phone put us on hold and then came back online and said he was next so it shouldn’t be much longer. We waited another 1.5 hours and called again and were told the vet was busy with critical pets and would like to see him but no idea when that would be. I don’t know how he goes from next to unknown time an 1.5 hours later. During our 3.5 hours sitting in the parking lot we saw a number other dogs get walked in and out. We ended up taking our dog home and calling his normal vet that was open now and getting on the emergency list for the day. I would like to think they have more then one vet on if they call themselves an emergency animal hospital. I will never take my pet there again. The staff needs to be better informed and give the right information to people when asked. If you are going to make people sit out in their cars for hours you need to keep them truthfully informed. As you can tell by the owner response they still haven’t learned from the other bad reviews that they need to improve the communication. It is truly bad they take a bad review and use it to attack a customer who left with their sick pet to find help else where. They failed to mention the harsh words were only spoken when they argued about bring the dog out so we could take him elsewhere. My dog was brought in with on going diarrhea with blood in it and they left him locked in a kennel for 3.5 hours and when he came out he was stressed because he needed to go but he has never gone in a kennel. His normal Vet Mahalo was contacted and got him in and we left with nothing but gratitude for a Clinic that knows what service means. It is easy to see why you have the worst ratings of any vet on the central island. Like other reviewers I will drive my pets to Victoria emergency hospital before I ever bring him back to this place. They would get a negative star rating if google let us.

My pup had a motorcycle accident. I rushed her here because it was the only place open. I was greeted by a young lady quickly. However, after the initial examination, i was told outright that if i didnt consent to xrays and other procedures i would have to surrender her. They also said if i cannot pay right away ( i could have gotten the money within 3 days) i would have to surrender her. They informed me about the lender they have scratch pay. The interest on this is astronomical. I was forced to apply for 1000 dollar loan. Not cool. The xrays and examination take place. I wait all night. Literally arriving at 1030 11 pm and leaving at 5 am. I was told, my dog is fine and has one broken tooth. They gave her antibiotics and pain meds and sent her home. Closer examination done bymyself (not a licensed vet) reveals much more problems. She has three broken teeth and is needing dental surgery. I don't understand how they missed that and how they treat customers that have experienced something like that in that way. I also witnessed on the same night, a family bringing their dashhound in to be put down. They made the family stay outside for over an hour waiting. While this dog is struggling to breathe and coughing. I wont ever take my family here again.

Quick and caring emergency service

Took dog in due to bad diarrhea. Staff are not knowledgeable. Waited 4 hours for about 10 minutes of time with the vet. Paid $600 for some antibiotics. Called to have the results sent to another vet and they don't seem to know how to send an email. Or perhaps the $600 wasn't enough for them. Called 5 times before they figured out how to send it. Seems as if they extort enough money not to care about customers.

Lisa Gregg

We had to have our family cat put down this morning, hardest thing to do. Would like to thank this clinic , so caring , commpassionte and kind. Took the time to explain every step.. Thank you to all the staff ❤ Your hours are awesome too, From our cat Dill My family to yours Thank you !

I had my dog euthanized here. They went through a list of my requests. I received her ashes but never received the paw print. This is devastating. Upon follow up they insisted the paw print was lot in the mail. I have heard from former staff that that is often not the case.. it just doesn't get done.

Barbara Ronalds

My sheltie was very, very sick. He’d swallowed a plastic bag. The doctors here saved his life! We are 7 weeks post op and my pup is back to his old self again. I Highly recommend the doctors at this clinic. They, as well as their staff, are very caring and even continued to check on Teddy 2-3 weeks after he was home from surgery. Thank you! — He wouldn’t have survived had we not brought him here. ????

Two days ago, my family's 19-year-old cat, Penny, reached the end of her life in the capable, kind hands of Dr. Trish at this clinic. Our little one's demise was gradual until it was sudden...and so was our need to release her. This clinic was open and available almost immediately. Everyone I was in contact with was patient, clear in communicating, and most helpful. From my experience, the staff here will do everything they can to accommodate animals and people who are in crisis with the utmost professionalism. Even as I was told there were a few serious emergencies being dealt with, Penny and I didn't have too long a wait until she was tended. Special mention to Laine, a veterinary tech whose presence was a gift. I am so grateful for the help at a terrible time.

We were treated with the ultimate care and compassion when our three year old English Setter, Charlotte, had to be euthanized in the early hours of the morning during our vacation to Parksville last June. It was a tough situation for us but everyone involved in Charlotte's care that night from the front desk staff through to the techs and the vet who was with us at the end were extremely kind and we will be forever grateful.

We were on vacation with our senior dog Keegan when his health took a serious downturn. We feel fortunate that the CIVEH was an available option to ease our friend's distress. The outcome was not positive for him but this difficult situation was made bearable by the prompt, kind and compassionate care by Dr Field and the supporting staff.

Truly caring staff. We came to the difficult decision to put down our little old dog. The staff showed the utmost respect for our old friend, even going so far as to arrange her cadaver in tidy way to make it look like she was just sleeping while we took her to the crematory. We always be thankful for their help and support.

Brought our sick dog in and waited 6 hours to get told there is nothing wrong with our dog as the dog could barely walk back got the car. Now we’re at another vet where they are taking good care of him. And yes he is very sick. Don’t waste your time.

Came in with our 8 year old 5 lb Papillon on a Friday afternoon in need of emergency treatment because our local vet was too busy to see him. He had been sickly & lethargic since Thursday afternoon & appeared to be in distress. Arrived at 445 PM & waited & waited....the condescending receptionist deemed him not to be an emergency case as “he is bright & alert”. Most if not all owners would know when their pet is in distress rather than a receptionist who makes a cursory assessment. Should mention my wife is an RN & we’ve owned many dogs in the past so we recognize distress. So after waiting about 3 hrs a vet appeared & prescribed some meds & took blood samples. We then took him home that night an hour drive away. Message when we arrived home telling us blood work indicated kidney problem & IV required to attempt to clear his system & he should be brought back. We kept him hydrated during the night & returned on Saturday 5 AM since our night vision for driving is poor & left him for treatment. We called numerous times for updates or call backs. Receptionist only gave vague responses as to his condition. A vet finally called Sunday around noon telling us there appeared to be no improvement in kidney function. We went to the hospital & the vet confirmed the diagnosis & recommended euthanasia. We agreed & said our heartfelt goodbyes to our little Papillon. Sorry for the drawn out saga of our experience. To the point of constructive criticism: 1. more knowledgeable empathetic incoming case assessment is needed rather than having an owner’s opinion being blown off (yes every pet owner & rightfully so would know when their pet is an emergency case) 2. additional staff veterinarians are needed to provide timely emergency service 3. better vet/client communication regarding updates of pet treatment & status (telephone or email) I will not be critical of the $2000 charge as we agreed to the care & treatment provided just wish it was provided in a more efficient manner. We did get our little one’s ashes back on the following Wednesday though. I only wish there could be an alternative emergency vet hospital that is more efficiently run on the mid island for all of us pet owners. My rating= minus 5 Stars. Much is to be desired in the performance of emergency veterinarian services ss noted 1, 2, 3 previously. Thank you.

Spoke with Nikki on the phone. Our Yorkie Havanese Terrier had just vomited and was acting very strange. Nikki diagnosed Marijuana toxicity over the phone. As we are staying at Brennan Lake campground, he probably found some on the ground or in the bushes. The next day and he's back to his terrierist self. Thank you Nikki

Joel Baum

Very helpful and quick and detailed advice over the phone. Will monitor my dog as suggested. Thank you.

Took our dog in during 50+ degree weather, as our dog clearly had heat stroke. they insisted on doing various testing for cancer, because cancer and heat stroke can have some similar symptoms. Anyways, 5000$ in bills to essentially put our dog down due to heat stroke. We are so heartbroken, having lost our family member, and now due to their irresponsible recommendations, we are also financially broken.

Rebecca Crooks

We had to bring our pup here late Friday night - we were an absolute emotional mess and probably even a bit difficult to deal with. They were so kind and thorough and made us feel like everything was under control. Our dog is anxious with strangers and he didn’t even seem scared to be there or for them to take him away without us. I won’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone I know and I definitely won’t hesitate to bring my animals here. 5/5, 10/10!!

Had to take my poor hoffers in, I was pretty nervous, but they made me feel so comfortable and gave him great care ❤️

We have two cats, brothers Pancake & Maxwell. They are rescue cats. Recently, Pan experienced a traumatic health issue and ended up at the Central Island Emergency Hospital in Nanaimo. It was Labour Day Monday and the local Vet Clinics were closed so my Husband and I made our way off our Gulf Island and headed for Nanaimo. Pan was admitted and given a most thorough examination, tests and treatment. The expertise and many kindnesses of the entire team, including doctors and receptionists, were superlative, preceptive and caring. It is always hard to see your pet ailing and both animal and human requires help. We received just this from the Central Island Emergency Hospital. I believe Pan would never have survived without them and we are eternally grateful for returning our very important family member to his brother and ourselves THANK YOU EVERYONE. MERRY, ARTHUR, PAN & MAX GOODING. Max on the top step & Pan on the bottom,

Unfortunately had to call vet for my little min pin. But with all the friendly and very knowledgeable staff, they Really looked after my dog. The veterinarian was extremely professional, courteous and explained everything. Their fees were quite reasonable. I highly recommend their services.

Staff and vet were compassionate even while handling a lot of customers. Front desk (I think her name was Kim) juggled a lot of anxious parents and hurting animals with the right amount of patience and efficiency. As visitors from out of town we hesitated to take our dog there rather than wait a day or so to get back to our regular vet in the lower mainland. We were so glad we did! It gave us the peace of mind to be able to enjoy the rest of our vacation on the island.

Nice gloss over note you left from my previous reveiw. You were good enough call, and to send the xrays,, but when it comes to the 3 people that supposedly read them, ( and we paid for ) the full radiologists report had some vital bits of information missing.. When I emailed back and requested the additional info, my email was blocked. So I can only look at the other comments you left for people, and and know it's all a sham. All I asked for was a proper report on the 14 xrays. So what will your gloss over comment be this time. ? Pitiful display of ethics. ......Now for your " reply comment " below this message. NOTHING WAS RESOLVED. You just changed who to send the email to. The reason for the email was not resolved.. You are avoiding my question altogether. Why can't you just send the rest of the records? Is it because you charged me for something that was never done?

Every single person I encountered on my visit was absolutely amazing. They took care of me and my cat Willard from the minute we walked in to the minute we walked out. The doctors were comforting, understanding and updated me as often as possible while Willard was there overnight. By far the most amazing experience I have ever had with any vet. Thank you to everyone who works there, you all work so hard and are such beautiful people!

EDIT: I originally rated this place 1 star, because of my first experience here. Details at the bottom. I have changed my rating because of the experience I had today. My dog, a 13 year old bully breed, took a sharp left turn a few days ago and rapidly declined in health. We already knew she was on borrowed time, and had an appointment coming up on Monday with a vet to talk about... options. Today, Friday, my dog showed sudden and intense signs of distress, and when I called my vet, they were walking out the door and were unable to help and offered up CIVEH as an option. When I called the desk I was a wreck and the woman on the phone was calm, cool, and sympathetic. She suggested I bring my dog in and once I arrived I received quick, compassionate service from the Vet, the techs, and the receptionist. On top of that, the total bill was less than I had been quoted at the original clinic I had pre-booked an appointment with, instead of emergency care. Today was a hard day, as it is for any pet owner with an aging dog. The team at CIVEH took good care of my dog and were compassionate and understanding while I was trying to handle my grief. Thanks to the team at CIVEH - I have elected to leave my original review posted below because I believe it is still relevant, but it was based on a non-emergency situation. Today, in an emergency, your team came through for me and my pet, and I appreciate it. Original Review: TL, DR: We waited 8 hours before being told "I was under the impression someone told you that we wouldn't be seeing you". I understand that our dog wasn't "actively dying" (nurse's words), but we checked in at 10am, and weren't told about a wait at all. After we had been waiting an hour or two, we started asking about a possible ETA. We were only ever told "we're not sure how long" and "weekends are busy". Nor was our dog ever "triaged" by a vet tech - her weight was recorded by the nurse at the front, but no preliminary exam was given in order to establish severity of the issue, an aural hematoma. At no point did anyone mention to us that we weren't going to be seen, or that we should seek care elsewhere, or explain that we were on the bottom of the "triage list". After 4 or 5 hours of waiting in the lobby, we were moved into an exam room, and figured we must be next up to be seen. We waited another hour, checked in with the nurse again, and again was told "Not sure, we're busy." Same again after another hour of waiting in the exam room. Finally, after 8 HOURS of waiting, patiently and respectfully, when we inquired again about what is going on, we were told that "we won't be seeing you anytime soon because this is an issue that should be dealt with by your regular vet, I thought someone had mentioned that". No apology, no offer of a precursory check of our animal, nothing. If someone had even attempted to communicate with us about the reality of the situation, we would have been able to move on with our day and make alternative plans for veterinary care. Instead, we were ignored and placated, wasting our day and holding up an exam room from other families and their pets. Appalling service. 0/5 stars.

Our dog had surgery at the hospital. The information given to us before and after surgery was excellent. All the staff were caring and compassionate in their treatment of us and our dog. Thank you
