On my recent visit I was treated quickly and with compassion and efficiency

Super long wait time, bring some “time-pass” stuff

While it's not perfect, St. Joseph's ER is easily the best emergency room in the Hamilton/Brantford area.

You will wait about 6-10hours before you get some help

Tonight I was in ER and assigned a room at 11pm.I was refused water until the doctor came (who was said to be on his way with medication right away). After 2.5 hours I walked out to ask the closest person for water. It happened to be the doctor having small talk with his coworkers. He said "I dont care" when I asked if I could finally have some water. Still haven't been visited by as much as a nurse...

St Joes ER will have you sleeping on a filthy hard sticky mat on the floor for a week with no treatment and no you're not allowed to have a pillow. No you're not allowed to have soap. I swear there must be a hundred different violations of health and morality codes. There was a covid outbreak in my unit during my stay. I repeat no soap, toilet paper on the floor. I hope the people running this place see justice.

Good experience. Friendly staffs

Usually some of the shortest wait times among the city's hospitals. People will still complain of long wait times, however that's a normal hospital experience with publicly funded services for the most part. If you do have access to transportation, the Oakville Trafalgar hospital is much quicker. It might be a longer wait for some people with less severe ailments to see a doctor. This is only because there are fewer doctors available, and most likely they are with another patient treating possibly a more serious matter. Ample parking available as well as accessible entrances for those with mobility constraints.

I am not sure if this will be read by the authority. This comment is for few staffs at front desk and meal order desk who think they have the right to speak rudely. A private room is what we opted and paid for during our stay ($270 per night). Few things that bothered us: 1. A lady from meal service thought our food order was too large. Instead of advising the Main Entree comes with two sides, she reminded me the food is for patients only and said I was ordering too many sides. Well lady... Have we ever complained that private room charges are too high! Learn to respect and to be professional. We all pay taxes in Canada.... nothing comes for free. On the top, this room comes with high charges. 2. All day construction next to private room window. The mom who just had a c-section and the newborn had to face repeated disturbances. My two stars are for all the hard-working nurses, residents, janitors who served very professionally with a big smile. We owe you countless thanks

Emergency Staff are very very rude. Waiting time is so long in emergency. My advise is NEVER EVER GO THERE !! #RudeStaff

Very slow

Steven DeRyck [Staff]

The staff do their best but they are ridiculously overworked in a very stressful environment.

The worst healthcare you will ever need. rude stuff, spend most of the time chatting from counter to counter , I guess they are here to have fun not to help other.

Big Props to All the staff at the ICU. All the nurses were extremely nice and helpful. When you are here in the intensive care unit - this is very much needed. The place pretty clean and modern. Only when you first come into the emergency entrance it’s pretty old and falling apart looking. But inside the ICU it’s another story. The food was pretty good for hospital food.

Abo Khald

They greet you and then forget about you Waiting and waiting and in the end nothing Do you think people like to go to the hospital? I hope I don't have to visit her again

Dr. Stanley Moyo

Recently went to the emergency hospital. All the staff who attended to me were exceptionally kind and professional. Questions I asked were adequately answered.

Alex Williams

Had to wait 27 hours to talk to a doctor about my mental illness. The hospital was not busy at all

These nurses have clearly never heard of bedside manner. I'm absolutely blown away by how rude every person we've interacted with here has been. Already stressful enough being in the emergency room without having the rudest nurses on the planet making you feel like garbage. Is this what the medical profession has been reduced to? Disgraceful.

Whole Gecko

Terrible place, terrible service. Honestly surprised my broken arm is less cared for than a child with a scrape from a fall on grass. Go to this place if you care more about the nurses gossip more than your injury, your best bet is just leaving whatever injury you have and just hoping for the best.

I have had to use these facilities a few times over the past 5 years, latest was august 2018, and i found the service and staff to be very professional and friendly. Sure there can be a waiting period but that us not unusual for this type of facility. Walk in take a number and you will be called in order to triage assessment station, then moved to treatment room and looked after according to your condition. Emergency cases of course treated fast.

Andrew

Decent hospital with great staff. Ive mostly had short wait times here- but they can get long. Thats just the nature of socialized healthcare- everyone is covered but the service lacks. If you dont like it, move to another country or vote the socialist politicians out.

Rude nurse told me to get out of the hospital while I was waiting for my wife in the waiting room. Very bad service here, the nurses should get training on how to treat others with respect.

Horrible emergency department, honestly go somewhere else, they only care about getting you through there system paid and out the door And doing as little diagnostics and or work as possible

Thanks.. best hospital and staff on the world ????

Absolute worst doctors that can't diagnose anything regarding mental illnesses. They experiment on people with pills, and tell you their is no withdrawals even if your hands shake after the medications wares off. I mean how can you diagnose a drugged person, but they do this exact thing. Never inform psychiatric patients about legal health advisors, simply just give them a sheet to read, which nobody does. When someone realizes their rights on form 1 they will transfer hospitals to sign form 3. Never answer help button, someone die of a heart attack waiting for the nurses while they are playing "not me". Just leaving an honest review of what I've seen.

Thank you so much for your wonderful care of my mom who was seen for a broken arm. Of course there was a wait, however we understand that sometimes emergencies happen (it is an Emergency Room!), which leads to wait times. Either way, your compassion from the moment we walked through the door was amazing. Thank you again!

The whole system of this health institution needs a whole reform. But first the patients need to be taken care with empathy that this place obviously lacks. Doctors are cold and agents of death, nurses are inexperienced, not even talking about med tech. This is the grim reaper's palace.

Grey T

I had surgery last Friday since then developed a few problems I was seen by my family dr today (Thursday) after an examination I was told it was very bad and she sent me to the emergency with a note stating that I was in need of an urgent assessment upon arrival I handed the note to triage I have now been sitting in the emergency waiting room for an hour and a half...what does the emergency room consider urgent ?why was the note from my family dr completely ignored? Must I drop dead before it's considered urgent? Absolutely one of the worst hospitals I've ever been to !!!!

Sweet Extacy

I came in with severe chest pains these idiots idk where they got their medical license from but from 10pm to 130 still didn’t see a doctor that’s some incompetence

Horrible post operative care. Nurses were slow to respond to patients' basic needs such as pain management and comfort requirements. Pain meds administered far beyond the 4 hour time period. Basic needs such as ice packs and water went unserviced. As a patient family member, I was told that I could not get water and ice for my husband and his roommate yet not one nurse responded to this basic need. Needless to say I refused to allow that and got ice and water for them after an hour of waiting. 4 to 6 nurses were at all times, sitting at the station, chatting and gossiping. Perception is everything. How do you expect the public to have any empathy when the claim that health care workers are 'over worked and under staffed when this is the example that is set!!??

Mostly great staff

DO NOT GO HERE IN AN EMERGENCY I had a heavy case of food poisoining that had left me severely dehydrated and unable to take on fluids for over a day. It took over 9 HOURS, for me to FINALLY get given an IV with some anti-nausea medication in it. 9 hours for goodness sake, on a Wednesday evening. I was in such a bad state during those hours of waiting that two police officers actually went and brought my condition to the attention of the nurses as I was clearly one of more afflicted people in the ER. The nurses put on a nice show for the officers, immediately came out to see me and said they'd have someone ready in 5 minutes for me to talk to. The police officers leave, I manage to nod my head in thanks to them, and proceed to wait another hour until I'm actually seen to - and that was just for triage. Finally got to see a nurse and she was a know-it-all who didn't pay attention to what I was saying. Called me 'a little dehydrated', even though at that time my hands were cramping and my arms were turning numb - she put this down to hyperventilating, someothing that the two people that had accompanied me to the ER completely dispute as I was actually trying hard to regulate my breathing to calm me down. After seeing the triage nurse I had to wait another 5 hours in the ER as people clearly not in an emergency got preferential treatment - I threw up bile 3/4 times while waiting for an IV, was never once checked up on by anyone in those 5 hours. The care when I finally got treatment was fine. I will not fault the young doctors and nurses, many of whom are in McMaster health science, but waiting 9 hours for a bloody IV is completely unacceptable. My dehydration was so bad by the time they tried to take blood and hook the IV up that they couldn't find a vein to use, having to try 3 separate areas. The nurse broke one vein, and a week later I can confidently say that she butchered the first attempt in my arm so much that I've now got an especially painful hematoma in my arm from internal bleeding Trust me when I say, I AM NEVER GOING BACK TO THIS GODFORSAKEN HOSPITAL. No respect for patients, there are other places worth your time. This isn't one of them

Field Honky

Sadly, I wouldn't even take my dying dog here. This place is an absolute nightmare, full of cruel and uncaring nurses who only consider you an inconvenience and annoyance. Very sad that health care has come to this point.

Coco Li

Came in the emergency by 8:30PM. Still haven’t seen a doctor now it’s 11:50PM . :)

Lijoy Michael

Be prepared to wait for long hours. They give appointments . But no timelines are followed. Take your day off before going as you won't be able to reach back at work.

The are excellent at been rude, careless and unethical ST JOSEPHS in hamilton are probably one of the worse hospitals in all Ontario. The staff is always madly angry like if they hate their lifes and the people they cross with. I was abused, bully and mistreated several times, their security staff used brutal force over me and hit me in the balls when I refuse to take a unknown medication. Tbh it's kind of disappointing because there is nothing people can really do about it... never go To PES, trust me you will regret it because once you get inside that door, you become nothing, you have less rigths than animals, they will make you sleep in dirty mattresses on the floor, they won't give you any food for hours and the nurses will treat you with disrespect and make you feel powerless

Greg Lucas

The E.R is run efficiently and quietly. The staff is friendly and efficient. Waiting rooms are clean and tidy. The time waiting isn't bad ,they have t.v and magazines. I was surprised. The process is excellent and efficient.

Mack F

They saved me from bleeding internally, they saved my life!

Ruth Kim

I waited for around 2-3 hours to get seen by the doctor, which is pretty typical for an emergency room. The triage nurse and staff were very nice. The issue, however, was that my doctor was incompetent. I had the chicken pox at the time (for the second time in my life) and was going through a rough time. The doctor took one look at the blisters and gave me a perfunctory diagnosis of “a viral skin infection,” which is actually the most useless diagnosis ever. I asked him If he knew what kind of virus it was and he told me it could be anything. Thank you for wasting my time. I went home and figured out that I probably had the chicken pox (thanks to Google), and then went to the walk-in to confirm. The doctor there immediately recognized I had the chicken pox, and told me that I had all the classic symptoms of the chicken pox. It’s pretty sad when I can diagnose myself better using Google than the doctor at emergency can. I mean, I’m sure things like this happen a lot, but I was definitely disillusioned with the quality of doctors out there. Please hire doctors who can recognize the chicken pox when they see it. On the other hand, the doctor at the walk-in was an absolute gem, and I regret not going there to begin with.

Jessica Smith

5 hour wait just to wrap my wrist. Staff extremely rude about wait time.

Hayley Hurst

Hands down the worst hospital experience Ive had in my 35 years. I wouldn’t of minded the over 9 hour wait so much if the staff werent so rude. They seemed bothered by any and every question. The whole experience was truly appalling.

(Translated) The arrangement is orderly, the medical staff are very professional, and they are also very patient. I don’t know why there is such a low evaluation. They are all trustworthy and respectable people. (Original) 安排有序,医务人员很专业,他们也都很有耐心,我不知道为什么有这样低的评价。他们都是值得信赖和尊敬的人。

Long wait times only to see a doctor for five to fifteen minutes to say go home. Seems like no one is working and they forget about you in the waiting room. You are also moved from waiting room to waiting room. No isolation either, people are vomiting right next to you. In addition, there are some loud patients that swear a lot. Not a good place to bring sick children. As well, the only food available is a slow Tim Hortons.

Abbey

The staff was very rude, I was very respectful and they treated me like dirt. When a person is sick they are sometimes in a vulnerable state. And when you need help from a nurse or doctor and they treat you like this, it's a terrible feeling. That was my first time going to a emergency room in about 10 years. I hope they can learn from people's concerns and comments.
