In my initial review I had given 2 stars and below you can read what my initial thoughts were. I feel it is pertinent as I am sure many people have their doubts when initially placing their parents or family members in such care. Well It has now been 3 months and I have changed my review to 4 stars. With the aid of some exceptional nurses, the comraderie between the patients and the drive of the physiotherapists to make her well, as well as the social activities put in place, she has adjusted well and has come to be well taken care of. There are still a few things that had concerned me but with the help of family and some wonderful night nurses we were able to address them. Overall, I do see the benefits and how great the place is. Of course there will be nice nurses and less nice nurses as there are people. The food also, I believe could be better and healthier but its a cost and numbers issue I understand. Overall I am please with her progress and with a few of the nurses. In particular Angelica, shows such humanity, such kindness and such patience with her elderly patients. She is truly a wonderful nurse and caregiver. Thank you for taking wonderful care of my mother. We are looking forward to having her home soon! _____________________________________ I'm not quite sure what to think of this place. I also feel like my mom is being neglected. She's older, has a language barrier and she had to go to the bathroom and none of the nurses stopped to ask her if she needed help. Then the one time they were rude when she had to go. I don't find her physio is helping much. Hard to help when it's once a day in the morning and not on weekends. It's like they want to keep her in there. Her air conditioning is on so high that she could get pnemonia, noone has dared turn it down or ask her and she has four blankets on plus one covering the AC. I have an uneasy feeling about the place, from the smell going in to what I've seen so far. Being there I have seen 2 nurses come in to talk to my mom in almost a week that I've been there. They have also looked at me weird when visiting. I seriosuly do not get a good vibe here for elderly mothers. It is true they have many patients but I seriously do not know how the rounds work. I haven even been able to ask questions. I ahve to walk down the shall and stop them mid walking to ask information because I rarely see a nurse come into my mom's room, except to deal with the woman who does have cancer. :( I also noticed there was feedback on a positive comment but no responses to anyone who had unpleasant experiences. That is also odd to me. We were told to feel blessed my mother's in there but I am not seeing much different care than she had at the former hospital. Maybe still too early to tell.

Knowledgeable, Caring, Staff. ♥️

The walls of this rehabilitation centre regurgitate the importance of compassionate care and yet the institution treats situations with so much staunch opposition and cold indignity. For a hospice centred in the Catholic faith we were shocked at the lack of hospitality and compassion from many of the management. If you’ve faced unimaginable situations with this place you are not alone.

Who forces someone to go 3 weeks without a shower or oral care. Takes an hour to help someone to use the toilet, and then denies a referral for equipment in order to have it covered by indigenous status. The requirements for basic human rights are not being met. At least provide the person with the best chances at success once they leave your facility

My father was transferred to Shaver10 days after his stroke. I cannot say enough about the care and concern that the staff have shown towards not just my father, but all patients. I have been there almost everyday for hours, for a week now, and I feel blessed that a place like Shaver exists. There is a culture of kindness, acceptance, and striving among all staff, and more, there's a joyfulness that is hard to find anywhere these days. When you think of the kind of help someone who has experienced a stroke needs, it is enormous, and all encompassing in so many aspects from personal hygiene to simply getting a fork to your mouth to eat. I find the professionals and staff show that they help each other out, they help patients, and they are patient with family and visitors too. I cannot say enough about HDS, and hope that other cities will use this Rehabilitation Hospital as an example of how it should be done in all cities. When there is a chance to show support for people who go above and beyond, especially in the workplace, we need to broadcast this far and wide. Please keep doing what you are doing here. If I ever have a stroke I hope that I will have the opportunity to get back on my feet here. My father's roomates are also appreciative. Kudos to HDS for exemplary support, empathy, nurturing, and a positive culture of healing.

I have been here at Shaver now for almost a month due to a motorcycle accident that broke 14 bones in my body including two broken legs. The staff are exceptional in every way and I feel blessed to have been granted this facility to recover in.

My mother was in there for 2 months after a knee replacement in 2015. She absolutely loved it there and always spoke highly of the staff. A nice memory of my mother.

The rehab they are performing for my 50 year old son is OUTSTANDDING! He is recuperating from Gulliane Barre Syndrome and would not be as far along that road without the expertise shown by the physio people at this establishment.

My gramma is in here, she is being taken care of by very rude, mean, heartless females, I pray they open a new hospital with caring humans working there not the old witches this hospital has. And they need to stop yelling at my gramma eith that nasty tone.

On behalf of my Dad who is being neglected and not receiving proper care. I have POA and the hospital will not provide any updates and he is being treated disrespectful and his personal and religious beliefs are being infringed upon ××update, still no update on my Dad. Also, a news organization just pointed out how the board of trustees and leadership is ALL WHITE! ( NOTE, all screeners are white, hard to believe no ethnic individual applied!) Switchboard staff who clearly abused and overstepped her boundary and threatened and harassed me due to my race/ethnic background is Kara. I have been racially profiled and discriminated by the switchboard staff, Kara and one of the security guards. Alleged accusations with no proof. Kara was rude to me and my Dad's friends and refused to put calls through to my Dad. I called multiple times to be put through and Kara will pick up and hang up or just let the phone ring. (Friends will testify) I was not allowed in with a lanyard however the staff allowed a white family of 2 without a lanyard! When questioned, the screener lady advised they have one. I said show it and behold the gentleman said he doesn't have one. I was then told "oh they are allowed as palliative". I replied no, they are allowed as they are white. Security guard came over and kicked me off property for threatening staff. Note, I was voicing my valid observation! Kara has clearly engaged in bullying, racial discrimination and harassment. I have been advised I am not allowed to see my Dad, be on property nor call to speak to my Dad nor can I call for updates. The Police has directed the hospital to provide updates and this still has not been provided. I am now being told my behavior is threatening, intimidating. I have asked for proof of alleged threats. BEAR IN MIND THAT AS A BROWN WOMAN BEING ASSERTIVE THAT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY ARE TREATED WITH DIGNITY IS CALLED THREATENING AND INTIMIDATING BY HOTEL DIEU SHAVER! I suppose in should just say "yes, mam, yes sir, beg your pardon" My Dad was left alone (he requires 24x7 care as he is a stroke victim) The number of posts about neglect and rude staff is frightening. I am clearly not the only person who has experienced this.

If I could rate this place any lower, I would. Except there are a few good people working there. For the most part though, my family and I found the nurses and nursing staff to be uncaring, rude people who don't really seem to care much about their patients. But they certianly make sure they all get their breaks and lunches at the same night, doesnt matter if a patient needs help! Which was what happened to my mom quite often! She would buzz the nurse for help only to quite often be told theyll be there soon then show up 20 minutes to 40 minutes later! What the hell good is that? So many more problems there but I'll save that for my formal letter that I will be sending to the higher ups at Shaver. If you have the unfortunate circumstances to have to spend time in that place all I have to say is..... GOOD LUCK!!!! Because you will certainly need it. Worst place to heal.

My dear sister was in a hospice room at Hotel Dieu Shaver hospital from July 23rd to August 5th. I have nothing but praise for the care my sister received from Dr. Arvinte and the hospice staff. They were gentle and kind and they helped my family through the difficult final days of my sister's life. I am grateful for their support and for the tender care given by them to my dying sister.
