I've never been cared for in this hospital or had any medical stuff done here but I had to wait an hour and a half just to visit someone plus this place was dirty and old

This old hospital is somehow still ticking. I know it's not brand new but it still gets the job done. I have never had a problem any time I have had to access services here. Staff have always treated me kindly and I feel like the care I have received was good. For Canada.

I had an accident few weeks ago, I was traumatized and confused coz I never been into that situation. The nurses were very polite to me. It was a busy day so I had to wait for my x-ray. But the next day I got my CT scan and I was discharged within an hour

Sonya Bedo

The doctor was very helpful and nice and friendly and so where the nurses.

Experience was ok.one of the times I went there,we were there for over 5 hours just for a X-ray and results. There was only 1 Doctor working so we were waiting 3 hours after the X-ray for the results.Vending machines close at 9pm,which suck for people like me.One time, there was staff looking at my family for no reason.Security is amazing

In March/April 1990 I was an Electrician on the german Fishery Protection Vessel "Frithjof". On the height of Labrador Banks my appendix ruptured, but the Doc of my ship said, "that I only drinked one beer to much". My age was 18 ... and I drinked not one beer, when we are on Sea. The doc said: Nevermind. Thats all. But the pain turns me crazy; every hour more and more. In the very, very last moment my Captain set course to St Johns. Because extreme bad weather no helicopter flies to open North-Atlanic. But our ship, the Frithjof, was fast enough to reach St. Johns in the right time. That was my "live saver". I get two very big operations in the St. Clares. After six weeks, the wounds in the chest are already open ... but Lufthansa pick me up, and fly me to my home Airport in Frankurt/Main. So the team in St. Clares in St. John's,.Canada save my life. Thank you to all the nice and very helpful Canadian people, that helped me 30 years ago. Now last month I retired ... and now have much time to think and look very often in Google Earth to find St.John's with the harbour, the Marconi Station, the Water Street (-:), the St. Clares Hospital and last but not least the International Airport. With the huge Airport in Toronto these are the last points, that I visited Mid May 1990 in Canada. I swear to god ... if I will have enough money, I will return to St. John's again. THANK YOU, THANK YOU DOCTORS AND NURSES FROM ST. CLARES. ONE DAY IN MY LIFE, WE WILL SEE US AGAIN. Soenke Netzband from Northern Germany!

Slow and disorganized. Don’t bother driving yourself here because there is never any parking available, just take a cab.

What a disgrace. Incompetent, negligent, rude, inconsiderate and lacking kindness and compassion. Worst hospital that I have encountered. I went in at 11:00 pm, there were two other people waiting. One fellow was sleeping and another in a hospital gown was in excruciating pain. The sleeping fellow fell off his chair and told the nurse that he was in pain and she threatened him if he didn't get up, called security. The man in gown gave up and left. No one else came in the waiting room and no one left from the emergency room for nine hours. I was told only one Doctor on duty. He must have been sleeping because no patients came or left. They completely ignored us a d didn't have enough compassion to allow the man in pain to atleast lie down in a bed. I was disgusted. At 7:15 am, six people came into the emergency room. An elderly man struck up a conversation and told me that everyone knows that Doctor sleeps at night if quiet so can work through day and make more money. The trick he said was to come at shift change. Deplorable and negligent. I am lodging a complaint. No hospital or staff should be allowed to operate in this manner. This truly is a hospital from hell on an island from hell. I am getting the hell out of here before this place kills me from their negligence, incompetence and apathy.

I never even GOT INSIDE THE BUILDING FOR MY APPOINTMENT because the parking situation is that atrocious. Typically, you can park on a side street (which isn't ideal because its mainly parking illegally and they will give you a ticket). I drove around for 45 MINUTES going around the parking lots, up the side streets, etc AND COULD NOT FIND A SINGLE PARKING SPOT. It'd be great to park somewhere and walk, too bad the sidewalks in St. John's aren't properly shoveled. I'm young, I will deal, but imagine being 65+? How do you get to your appointments? Terrible. Poorly laid out. P.s. can't speak for the doctors or anything inside, I never made it -.-#

We waited for 10hrs in the emergency for my wife's severe leg pain . We don't know, for one ultrasound scan needs to wait for 10hrs, leaving our small two kids in the home.

I was in this hell for 5 days due to headache and a droop in my face. They did 1 CT scan and gave me a medication that i had an alergic reaction to, but when the CT showed nothing they said to go see a Psychiatrist. ...... I'm sorry this is bullshit for anyone who is ill. The nurses were extremely nice and did feel badly for you.

was here for almost a month & can't say enough on how great I was cared for!! Great Doctors, amazing Nurses as well as the amazing other members of my care team (even the blood lab crew I always hated to see coming lol) right down to the food service team who were funny & friendly & always made me smile! the escort team always made me feel like a princess & gave 'great rides' to all my tests...the food was amazing with the new changes, gone are the days of the old 'hospital food' stereotype for sure! for a 'dreaded hospital stay' it was the best I've gone thru!! ❤️❤️

What’s the point in having an emergency department, if the people waiting are the least of your concern? Been here 7 hours so far, and only 5 or 6 people have been called in. As of right now there are only 1 or 2 people here that were here before me, and I bet I’ll still be waiting another few hours before I get seen. Also, I thought cleaning measures were supposed to be increased with Covid? I’ve seen someone clean behind the counter multiple times. In 7 hours, I’ve seen someone come out and clean the bathroom and change a garbage once. I’ve heard multiple people getting sick in the bathroom, paper towel all over the floor, and no toilet paper whatsoever.

Absolutely vile the level of negligence and lack of care for their patients at this sad excuse for a hospital. Expect 8 hours + in the ER waiting if you're not literally dying. Nurses are mostly awful and don't even check on you. The doctors are fine but they only bother to staff one so if two people are critical at once, well good luck pal. Pathetic hospital. Do NOT go.

Horrible experience! Came here due to abdomen pain and have been waiting for 7 hours already! This is the worst health care facility ever and the nurses couldn’t care less about you.

Thank god this building hasn’t housed an incinerator since 1998 ! Prince of wales street and all of rabbit town can breath clean air again. Not medical waste vapours ! A special thanks to Ivan Dalton and reg hillier for this information ! They are great people . but it is a very rundown complex oldest wing dates back too 1922 newest wing started in 1963 and opened In 1971. I would not get surgery in this Dump unless you paid me !

Horrible experience. I went to the emergency room after having a Grand-Mal Seizure. During this Grand-Mal Seizure (which happened at my house) I fell and hit the back of my head on the floor. My head didn't really ache and someone looked at it and said they couldn't see anything. I decided to go to the hospital though because I was having seizures (and just had a Grand-Mal Seizure) and my heart was racing (before and after the seizure); I don't drink, smoke, nor did I take anything for this to happen! When I arrived at the hospital, the triage nurse asked why I was there. I did and she said "just pick one." I tried to explain that they were all interconnected (the seizure caused the fall and racing heart, especially continuously, can be part of a seizure). The nurse wouldn't listen to me; instead she said she would write "hit head" on the admitting paper! I said no, I'm here for more than that and hitting my head isn't the main reason (or a concern - I explained that I hit my head during a seizure) I was there. She refused to write that I was having seizures and a continuous racing here down, even though people go to the hospital for that! I took my MCP Card from her and left. Our health care system is a horrible joke. I would rather stay home then waste my time at the hospital since that's all it is most of the time - a waste of time.

St Clare's is not even close to being as organized as the health sciences. It's an old hospital and it looks so unkempt and run down. The cleaners are not very thorough at their jobs. The staff is as accommodating and helpful as they need to be. Please keep in mind they are at the epicentre of the downtown core and have to deal with a lot of people who are addicts and have mental health issues. Their work environment can be dangerous and volatile. They do the best they can. The waiting period to see a doctor in emergency is ridiculous but there is only one Doctor on at night. That's a staffing problem. I think the whole hospital needs an overhaul both structurally and with management

I was here and left feeling worse than I felt before I went in. The doctors and triage nurses were rude; the triage nurse was a bully from high school and the doctors had an IV put in me, then decided to do nothing. They left and nobody came in to remove the IV so I had to remove it myself. I was bleeding badly when I removed the needle; I used the sheet of the bed I was in to stop the bleeding. I threw the needle on the floor since I was angry that I was being treated like dirt; I figured they liked trash since they were treating me like trash, which I why I did that. When I left, I had to go into the bathroom in the waiting room of the emergency room to get paper towels to stop the bleeding. After that, I went home. This happened in 2021; because of this I won't ever go back to this hospital again. I had better experiences here than the Health Sciences Centre and the Waterford Hospital but that isn't saying much. The bad experiences are so intense that they make the good experiences feel like a dream. It shocks me that I could have a great experience at this hospital than have horrific experiences that would make me never want to return to the hospital again. I had two good experiences with the Health Sciences Centre; the last one being in 2018. I stopped going there after last year, when I was driven to attempt suicide after receiving horrendous treatment for three days; I was there because of a bad Grand-Mal Seizure. St. Clare's Mercy Hospital never drove me to a suicide attempt but I fear going back there too since my next experience there might be like my last experience with the Health Sciences Centre.

The staff there is good, help you in whatever way they can, you are not left in the dark

Worst hospital to go to. I went there and the triage nurse put a IV in my arm and sent me back to the waiting room. A few minutes later, my arm started to bleed. I went into the bathroom and wiped the blood away and fixed the plaster around the IV. Ten minutes later, it started to bleed again - even though I'm keeping my arm out straight. I went up to the triage nurse's desk and told the triage nurse. The triage nurse took me in, told me off for "messing up the needle" (I fixed the wrapping - I actually checked to see if the triage nurse could do something but she was busy with another patient. I told her this and also pointed out that I was bleeding BEFORE I "messed up the needle". She refused to acknowledge this, instead she removed the needle and told me to leave - even though I wasn't rude or inappropriate. I went home and the issue resolved itself - a week later. I would have seen my family doctor but my family doctor wasn't available (not in the office) and is the only family doctor working in the clinic. I thought about going to the Health Sciences Centre but after what I experienced here, I decided against it in case it happened again - I heard some of the nurses and doctors work at both emergency rooms so I might see that nurse again. I despise the health care here since it is practically non-existent.

Debra Blackmore

Sad that this is called health care. Came here from work with an injured shoulder at 12:30 pm and three hours later still in waiting room . What a waste of time it is to go to an emergency department . People who came and registered after me are alleady in and left to go home.

destiny somerton

Very ignorant staff and they DO NOT take brain issues seriously . Everything seems to be a headache or a migraine until all of a sudden they are telling you that you got turmors all over your brain and its to late to do anything.

I recently had dental day surgery and the nurse who helped me get gowned and stored my belongings was wonderful but when it was time to transport me over to surgery another nurse stepped in and said she'd bring me over. That nurse then complained that the wheelchair I was in was the same type that she injured her back and went of disability for 8 weeks on. Then she proceeded to ask me if i could walk the rest of the way. If you can't do the job find another.

In hospital here for 11 days and room was never cleaned.....I dropped something on floor day 1 ...couldn't pick it up due to surgery....it was still there when I left so I know it wasn't cleaned when I was asleep.....hated hated it there and will die before going there again......

The security staff did a nice job of welcoming us and helping us to access the main hospital in the evening, July 8th and 9th 2021.

Uchenna Ugah

Came in here at 9:00pm, this is almost 6:00am the next day and am yet to see a doctor.

Boyd Oldford

Spend 5 days here, couldn't ask for a better group of people, the nurses were excellent and really friendly the doctors were the same and the food service people were always conversational and good for a laugh which you need when laid up for a few days. Nothing but praise from me not one thing to complain about.
