Emergency room stinks I went for a kidney stones and nothing was done except for TYLENOL. I was there for a long time I I am diabetic and ask for food and they told me they couldn't give me because I was not admit it I tried to talk do the Nurses and they would say I'm coming back and they never show up so I decide to take off the IV and go home

This hospital is so disorganized and understaffed. I feel horrible for the professionals who are trying their best to care for their patients but just can't.

I just spent 9 days in the high Acuity Trauma Ward following an ATV accident. I have so much respect and admiration for the nurses in this Ward, they are actual angels! Thank you so much for nursing me back to health. You are all amazing at your jobs and probably don't hear enough that you are appreciated!

Just had a baby here, elective c section. Mostly great, but waiting MANY hours to be discharged is definitely NOT great. Would be a massive improvement to have people on site to do this. Very annoying.

Update: have been here for 5 hours. No one tells me anything. When I said I want to take my niece back home they dont let me. It is like those horror movies where you bring a family member to check on sonething and you never see them again. Wow. Have been waiting here for the past 4 hours, no one gives me any update on my family member and also don’t give me access to them. In the time I have been here, they rolled 4 people who test positive to covid, instead of isolating them, they brought them to the common waiting area

Always a positive experience. Get over the wait time people it is the busiest hospital in the province. They have a horrible job sifting through the whiners to get to serious cases. I've had the misfortune to have had three major procedures and been treated professionally and respectfully at RCH. Keep up the good work!

Jan Schmidt

Volunteer here. Not a place to visit unless you have to.

There’s some staff working here whom really need to get fired , some of them are even actualy rude I’ve been there a few times recently! Not a very ideal place to ask for help!

My dads end of life care was very inappropriate and I feel like they contributed to his death

Dr Matishak saved my life performing an emergency craniotomy to remove a brain tumor that bled out in this hospital, the staff post op were very helpful and provide care with kindness and dedication but there was a bad outbreak of bed bugs at the time yet I survive!

My boyfriend went to the emergency department and he was really painful, he couldn’t even sit down probably and they didn’t even run a single test to see what’s causing the pain. He also mentioned to them it maybe the kidney what’s causing the pain but instead of running blood tests or X-ray, they just gave him pain killer and sent him home like nothing is happening to him without checking him. Emergency department is for emergency services not just to make people wait for so long hours and sent them home without checking out the issue so I don’t recommend this department for emergency services.

The two receptionists at medical imaging are so rude and short with people. They are working in the wrong spot for sure.

I've been to the emergency a few times over the years unfortunately. This time was due to a ulcer in the throat caused by a viral infection. It has been ongoing for a week and I was hesitant to go because I didn't want to risk anything going if I didn't have to. Well I wake up at 3:30 again in horrible pain and I say U can't keep doing this I'm going. So I show up at 4:00 am at emergency, and thats when I have the pleasure of meeting Dr. Kathryn Toews and the nurse staff on duty that night (I didn't get their names unfortunately). What can I say about Dr. Toews, she was in my.opinion the best doctor I have had the pleasure of being the patient of. Think of a compliment you could give a doctor, it applies to doctor Toews. She was polite, kind, empathetic, funny, professional, knowledgeable, efficient, quick witted, punctual, just everything. An absolutely wonderful doctor and person. The staff was wonderful as well. Its never fun going to emergency, esspecially at 4:00 am having woken up in terrible constant pain. They made the experience posative and helped relieve my pain, inform me of what was going on, make sure I understood the steps I need to take over the coming weeks and how to manage the viral infection and ulcer during the period of time. I thanked them for their hard work and dedication working through COVID. I wish there was more I could do. Absolutely wonderful people, they all deserve a trip somewhere to relax and beautiful beaches when all this is over.

While every other aspects of experience at Royal Columbian hospital is a mixed bag, Dr. Towes is the one who made the whole experience positive. I am so inspired that she keeps her calm and empathy towards her patients while working at a high stress environment like ER. It is too sad that there are not many doctors like her.

Radek Kobylka

Sketchy but quick. Police hang out here like they own the place

They always take the time out to talk with there patients and like you go into very much in depth when having a conversation.

I am really thankful to the Dr. and all other nurses who took care of me. I was admitted on August 24,2018 and the doctor and nurses listened all my symptoms and explained everything after every tests. I went to surrey memorial for same reason few days back and i can tell the huge difference between these two hospitals, how well royal columbian hospital treats the patient.

Oldie, but goodie. The staff is exceptionally nice, me likey.

Go here to be publicly humiliated, degrated and ignored.. do not go here for emergency, spend the time going elsewhere its worth it to not have your time wasted. Especially by Dr.Belcar. this ER is a joke. Almost as bad as Burnaby general.

Great for physical treatment, absolute garbage for mental health. I was left in a bed in the hallway for four days (pre covid) after a suicide attempt seeing a different therapist every morning for 5-10 min, finally I decided (still suicidal) to continue recovering at home. I left feeling worse off then I did arriving. More recently (April) I went to emergency for loss of vision in one eye and was treated 10 times better than before, the wait for CT was long but I felt cared for, which is a far leap from the treatment I had received before. The doctor did call me fat pretty loudly when he couldn't do the spinal tap and I was unbelievably embarrassed. There are obviously changes that need to be implemented at RCH but it a better hospital than most.

Great hospital

John

Wonderful staff. I've heard bad things about this hospital in terms of doing major surgery, but all I can say is the staff here are very friendly and caring after being here for testing and emergency visits.

What type of hospital loses a urine sample? Royal Columbian Hospital does!! Didn't even inform me of their mistake, instead i had to ask 4 hours later. Some of the nurses, (yellow zone)are very agitated and impatient with sick people. Have some epathy and sympathy for people. If you don't have those 2 things, you need to choose another profession!!!

Rabia Safi

This is a terrible hospital. They have the most rude nurses. They don’t care about the patient at all. While I was there I could here other patients complaining about it too. As a medical professional myself, it’s very sad to see the state of our patient care go down like this. It’s like all the nurses and doctors have stopped see the patients as human beings.

JennyFromTheBlock

Spent a couple of days at the pediatric unit with my little one. All staff was kind and supportive. A special thank you to the night shift nurses!

The nurses tha treated me in the 3 North tower, Monday late afternoon to early,7 am (Nov. 19--20) were excellent. Gene Alvair and Linda are a gift to the patients.

This is my go to hospital whenever I have a real emergency. They will take your issue very seriously. A doctor will see you within the first 20 to 30 minutes to assess your state .Very friendly and professional staff. The hospital is also very well equipped.

Closed the doors on my fiance joining me for my 9 week ultrasound and then they diagnosed as a miscarriage at first but calculated my progress falsely. Worst experience and I left heartbroken with their lack of compassion.

For a first visit to the trauma unit , being in a ward and the operating room ( all first times ) , I had a positive and good experience at RCH. The nurses , doctors and staff are dedicated in their job and I am grateful and thankful for the care and attention .Thank you ALL and keep up the good work/job :-).

To whom it may concern > > I am writing to expresss my great disappointment in the service my mother, has received at the royal columbian hospital. My mother was admitted into the emergency department on the 22nd of august with severe blistering casued by an infection of a insect bite. During this visit the emergncy depertement were extremely tentative and have helped my mother greatly, to them i am extremely grateful. My mother was required to attend the out patiant IV clinic daily to receive antibiotic treatment, after a day of IV antibiotics treatment, my mother was transferred to the cast clinic to see Dr McInnes in order to open the blisters and relieve some of the pressure. Packing was inserted in the wound and the hand was dressed. The next day the nurses at the IV clinic did not know whether to remove the packing or not as no notes was writen on the file regarding the operation or the doctor who conducted the operation nor was there any comments on follow up appointments. > The packing was left in the wound for 3 days, meanwhile the nurses at the IV clinic where asking me if they should remove it. I dont know how things work here but surely you can not expect a non medical member of the public to make such dessions. > The nurses in the IV clinic seem to be operating on autopilot workout any considerations for actual case in there care. > Out of dessperation i went in search for the doctor who conducted the operation, as no one in the clinic was providing any assistance, in either locating the doctor or finding out what is the next step. > We where able to find the nurse who assisted the doctor in the cast clinic and we where told that she forgot to add the note to my mother's file that requsting the packing must be removed the following day of the operation. The nurses named Karen came with us and removed the packing herself in the IV clinic..My mother suffured excruciating pain, as skin started to heal over the packing, that she shouldn't be suffering. my mother has suffered enough and it seems in this hospitals care she suffering even more. > This is unacceptable and to be frank inhuman. > > I now have no faith in this hospitals and need some confidence that my mother will be rid of this infection without developing something else due to the carelessness of the medical staff.

They refused to give service to my sister who is 3 months old and has cardiac problem especially the nurses in Paediatrics they spent two hours just to fight that why’d you come to this hospital why didn’t you guys go to surrey hospital then finally changed my sister’s NG tube.

Wesley Uitvlugt

Slow. The doctor talked my wife and I into staying the night so that we could get ultrasound results right away. We have been waiting 23 hours now in a room with a bed that has dirty blood stained sheets for a 5 minute conversation. We have a 2 year old at home, I get that we aren't in a life or death situation priority but this is totally unacceptable. The only reason that its not 1 star is that some of the nurses have been nice.

Horrible staff, no bedside manner. For someone who never visits a hospital- ever. Comes in with arm, shoulder, numbness in my hand, tightness in my chest. I get treated like I came looking for drugs. The worst treatment I have ever received.

Linda McClure

RCH is the place to be should you have a heart condition or experienced a stroke. Staff are well educated and experienced in their respective fields. Access to specialists a diagnostic testing is readily available. Unlike other hospitals with a lower Trauma ranking.

Shemin Kaba

Wonderful staff, friendly, even so buzy - still very nice. Best part, ambulance service and staff Thanks

My wife just went through labor here and everything was exceptional. All the RNs and the doctors were super helpful and supportive throughout the process. Lots of kudos to every staff in the labor room. However, don't use this hospital for ER cuz you might die before you see the doctor.

I have been through a lot here over the years... what I have witnessed is unbelievable cover ups. It's not all staff Certain ones definitely need reviews. I can't believe what they are getting away with... shocking

The staff at this hospital is always lovely, and they all have wonderful bedside manner when you do need to come in. If you have to deal with the neurology department, however, you should definitely be taking a forward approach with your care. The first time I was told that I would be called to make an appointment, I waited three months. After I tried calling and finally got through, the receptionist in neurology could not even find my referral, which is why I never received an initial call I would assume. I am now going to have to call again to make another appointment though the neurologist told me that someone would be calling me to make a follow up appointment. I'm not sure if there is adequate communication between the neurology department and the neurologists in the hospital, but it has been a frustrating spot in my attempts to get treatment. If you have to deal with neurology, please take your care into your own hands and call the office if you do not hear from them instead of waiting; you'll probably wait forever.

My younger brother was there for a knee surgery and they took really good care of him. Thanks to the surgeons, physiotherapist and the physicians. I also was able to see the ER doctor and they helped me alot including the nurse. However, the ER receptionist lady was rude af.

Why is every hospital the lower mainland absolutely garbage psych ward discharges people after wasting their time for two months and locks people in seclusion for no reason

Kim Chan

I was registered to give birth at the Langley hospital, but when the time came, they wouldn't admit me because they were full and I was redirected here. I had two nurses during my stay who were helpful and caring, but the vast majority were horrible. No one helped me to deal with my substantial tearing after I had to have a forceps delivery (they mentioned pitocin to help me deliver on my own but then never followed through with it and I was left in labor for 34 hours, after which I had no energy left to push). The facilities are old and nasty, and I should not have been surprised when I developed an infection. As soon as I got out of this awful place I went to my doctor and was told I had an infection and all of my stitches had fallen out prematurely. It took months for my wound to heal because of the problems that came as a result of the lack of care at this hospital. Expectant mothers, do not deliver here!

A doctor at a medical clinic inform me I had a broken foot (after x-raying my foot). He told me to visit ER for a cast or brace. I arrived at the ER and received a second x-ray for what reason? The doctor told me that I should see another doctor and to arrange an appointment. No cast or brace was provided. I was sent home. No real communication was provided by ER regarding my injury. I received a phonecall regarding the referral and told I need another x-ray a WEEK later (a third one again??). I phoned Royal Columbia ER and instead had a short very rude conversation with a woman who constantly interrupted me and was in a rush to end the call. She did not let me speak to the doctor who saw me. An ER visit should have better communication than this.

Monica de Carvalho

Most of the nurses & staff excellent but especially the part time staff very helpful

Just had my baby here. The nurses and doctors are very nice and friendly. The room is big and clean. They handled my emergency C section very well. The anesthesiologist here is great. He was right there when I needed him and explained everything very well. I had a unexpected reaction to the drug and he took care of it too. The nurses at the Maternry centre are very responsible and patient. They checked on me all the time when I was there. I even received a free massage section from the program. The only negative thing is that the road around the hospital is under construction now so it is hard to find the parking lot.

Having all your elevators shut down in the entire building and stranding disabled and sick people is unacceptable. Having your parking attendant harrass a disabled man for taking 11 minutes to leave the parkade because the elevator is broken down and then trying to charge them $4.50 to leave that same parkade because the people in the car couldn't exit it because of the elevator being broken....absolutely disgusting. How dare you try to charge someone when your facilities aren't working properly. You should be sued!!!!!

This review is for Lisa in the ER (brown hair, registers nurse) - on June 27 Lisa showed incredibly warm, positive support in her treatment of my significant other's health issue. She really instilled a feeling of comfort within both of us during a very stressful situation. Thank you Lisa for your wonderful help!

Not the best hospital for sure...for those saying it's the worst?? Langley Memorial is far worse ..

Sir Sam Smith

Zero star I would give them only for their parking lot. This is the first hospital that takes their patient's parking away from them. You have to pay or miss your appointment by staying in underground parking lineup. Also, if you be late for only 5 min, the hospital staff won't visit you. Give you another appointment in next six or 12 months.

Irish Anne

Quick service.

Brian Fowler

I can honestly say wow. I've lost all respect for nurses and doctors after today. Here with my 2 month old and 2 year old. The lady checking in was on a level of stupidity I was not prepared for. The Doctors and Nurses blatantly don't care about any of the patients. I went back last night because it turns out I was covid positive and that I had contracted it from my son. While in the quarantine room I expressed that my lungs are burning and I can't breath. The nurse responds with ya that's covid and throws me two blankets, turns the lights out and closes the door.

Hani ElKurdi

The best and most professional staff and surgeons, amazing life saving if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be able to give this review. I owe my life to the immediate response to all involved in the cardiac Emergency, ICU and ward 2 South. I had many Angels in Royal Columbian Hospital New west looking over me.????????????????. Good bless you all for the great work and compassion that you give us all.

Me and my boss came after I had a small fall at work, I was fine, intake was fast, blood work was fast, after I put the blue gound on, iv went in for the die, so it will show up on a cat scan, that was taking forever, doctor and nurse were both really friendly and quick explained everything well, This is a great hospital.

LOUIS APPLE

I personally been misdiagnosed there on two different occasions had to contact a lawyer misdiagnosis broken bones rushed out of there maybe like to feel that I was nothing that I didn't matter horrible Hospital I can't stress that enough horrible doctors it was so bad I received a sorry letter from the executive director

Brenda Green

The hospital staff (paramedics, nurses, doctors—cardiologists/surgeons) were professional, empathetic and informative. I was impressed by all the medical support I got (tests to rule out other ailments). As my situation was urgent, I got an urgent response with care and support. Thank you from a person who was visiting Vancouver. Brenda G

I had a wonderful triage nurse here last year. He's on a poster at braid station. He was kind and listened to me. I was blessed to have him and lucky to be in at a time where there was almost no wait

Mir Rejaul Karim

Worst hospital ever. I went to their emergency section with my wife who was in excruciating abdominal pain. Even though there was no other patients and we were first in line, it took about two hour just to take my wife to the ER room. This was this really incompetent nurse who probed my wife's vein so bad while inserting the needle for IV, that her arm is completely swollen and kind of paralyzed right now. Probably they have damaged her vein completely. If not that it will take a long time for her hand to be normal. Please avoid their ER section if you can. They don't care about you at all. Just go to any other closet hospital like Vancouver general and you will get a much better service.

Danny Yoo

Park up the street on Sherbrooke (by the park) if you can.

They make heavy accusations, when they have no business doing that. Are they trying to be detective s instead of medical staff now. I went to emergency Dept. In pain weak and high blood pressure. They told me nothing wrong. Week later I had surgery to remove an infection growing and the surgeon explained the type of bacteria I had was flesh eating disease. I was extremely upset for weeks . I'm still suffering from this delicate operation. The home care nurse visit this morning. I'm having lots of bleeding and refuse to go back to RCH for anything. I still have nightmares regarding certain staff members. Instead of buying new equipment, invest in sending staff on crash course for respect. We're not living in a third world country. It's ridiculous. May God Bless us All. Thanks

REVIEW#1-5 STARS ROYAL COLUMBIAN hospital emergency ward, New Westminster, BC While installing some exterior Hardie board siding on a mall fascade renovation, a co worker accidentally shot a roofing nail into my hand with a pneumatic coil nail gun. As the local medical clinic physician where we were working felt uncomfortable removing it, I had to wait 12 hours later until I got to the New Westminster emergency ward to finally have it taken out by the doctor working there- Laura Y Chng. She had a wonderful bedside manner in spite of being overwhelmed with a never-ending supply of patients, froze the wound area appropriately, & removed the nail without the expected dose of excruciating pain. Dr Chng would make any repair of a trauma wound as pleasant an experience as could be expected I imagine...The xray staff were very proficient as well. Thanks! Parking out along Columbia street in front of the hospital is fine as long as you have toonies or a credit card to pay with... REVIEW#2 - 5 STARS! ROYAL COLUMBIAN hospital emergency ward, New Westminster, BC June 3, 2018 On Wednesday this week, I slipped off a slippery roof and fell 12 feet landing basically flat on my back on a short 3 foot wall with my tail bone area taking the brunt of the impact...As medical imaging equipment in the Gulf islands clinics is lacking, I had to wait several days until I returned to the lower mainland to get checked out by a professional that I had not cracked my pelvis or tail bone vertebrae with the impact. I wasn't doing too much today, Sunday June 3, so I thought going to emerg to have someone give me the once over wouldn't be a bad idea...The ward was busy, as it was with my last visit for a roofing nail in the hand injury. I got in to see a doctor in under 2 hours this time. I had the pleasure of having Dr. Laura Y Chng assigned to me again this time, who gave me a lengthy battery of tests to determine whether I had any worrisome injured back symptoms as a result of the fall. She pointed out possible future problems that might arise from my injury and as well the inherent risks to the tissues in the area from a diagnostic xray. In the end, we decided an xray of my pelvis and tail bone area would be a good idea. I ended up with a clean bill of health other than my black and blue tail bone area. She was very friendly, charming, articulate and informative about issues that could arise from this type of injury to this particular area...There are far worse places to be when hurt than at Royal Columbian, in Dr. Chng's capable hands, the emerg staff's hands or the excellent xray staff's hands. Thanks! I hope my next visit does not come quite so soon... Johnny k welsh coquitlam bc

Have brought my kid to emergency numerous times and stayed overnight twice. It's always a speedy "check in" (as he's got a condition) and the care provided by nurses is top notch. All the staff I met are polite and caring. Not commenting on the hospital food, but the cafeteria is great! Lots of choices for hot and cold meals as well as a Tim Horton's coffee counter. There's also a small gift shop and a kiosk in the lobby.

I was standing in line waiting to check in at emergency. A lady came in and told them Her husband was having a stroke in the car out front and asking for help. FOUR nurses just stood there telling her she needed to bring him in herself. This poor lady asked them 4-5x to help her and her husband and they refused to do so she was clearly unaware of how to handle a situation like that and was too small to help her husband! She ran around looking For a wheelchair for 10 minutes and they did not help her. If I was not in pain and able To help I would’ve. Giving this place 1 star is more than what they should deserve. I would not recommend going to this hospital at all!

This website purports to give Royal Columbian Hospital patient information but when it is phoned Frazer Health answers. If a patient happens to be in another hospital Frazer Health may direct a call to another hospital without indicating that it is not RCH. This can lead to costly travel.

Misdiagnosed my strep throat and mono another doctor from north van saw in 30 seconds Staff are over worked and burned out They need to hire more nurses and retrain the doctors as they are unceremoniously uncaring. The people at the top must be hoarding alot of the budget for it to run this poorly

Special thank you to Dr. Erin Blake, Dr. Raphael, and the medical staff for their help during my stay.

I'm a Doula and just went to help a mom to be during the childbirth. I've been in different hospitals in the lower mainland and this is the best experience I've had. Specifically I want to mention Dr. J. Chow in the Obstetric area. She has been the most respectful and knowledgeable professional I've ever worked with. It is rare to see a doctor with so much respect for the woman and her rhythm to bring a baby to this world.

The only thing I can say that is positive is the staff (doctors, nurses, etc.) do their absolute best under extremely difficult conditions.

I gave birth at home and it was planned and uncomplicated birth, however midwives suggested to go to the hospital. It was a mistake, We were stuck there for 5 days for no apparent reason. The baby was put into NICU . He has 8,5 apgar score, 4,08 kg, born on term, with only one uncertain symptom, which actually was probably an adaptation after quick 1,5 birth, In the hospital the mother can not stay with the baby. NICU is designed so that it is impossible to be with the baby 24 hours, like it SUPPOSED TO BE - mother-baby contact is crucial after birth. Nurses are very nice, but it doesn't help much. In the hospital doctors just care about physical body and not about emotional, not about spiritual. Just the body like we are machines, robots. In the hospital there is no knowledge about psychological consequences dividing babies and mothers. And consequences are bad. Considering the fact my baby was healthy, what was the reason for us being separate? Also, breastfeeding. I am not the first time mom and I am experienced at breastfeeding. The baby was latching well right after birth. I had tons of milk despite being stressed at the hospital. The best the baby can get in such situation is mom's mil! Not a stupid bottle the nurse in Pediatric unit was pushing me to give him. She said "To stay sane you can give him a bottle" thinking I am going insane because he is asking for breast all the time. No! I was happy everything is well with breastfeeding and he is eating well. I was going insane she was pushing me with that stupid bottle. Victims of consumerism and marketing. Also checking all the time on things - no time, no place for rest. So many random people are coming in. Do I need that after giving birth? No. This is not care this is disturbance. I am a counsellor and systemic constellation therapist, I know what I am talking about. NICU and hospitals give trauma to people. I am so disappointed I had to go through this. Western hospital doesn't consider mind and soul, doesn't consider the knowledge about mother-baby bonding, doesn't know about holistic health. This is unfortunate. But I hope it is going to change. Suggestion I have for the Royal Columbian Hospital is to have beds in NICU and more private space, so parents can stay with the baby 24 hours a day. This is least that can be done. Also, it is a good idea to incorporate ancient knowledge about health and well-being (Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, even modern psychological research about holistic health and well-being, etc). I am thankful the nurses in NICU are kind.and patient. This was good. Thank to the them. But the whole western medicine is far from something that help people feel healthy. Even if you are healthy they will make you think something is not right with you.. Anastasia

One of the best hospitals in the lower mainland if your sick or injured.

The "new" process of streaming in the emergency room seems to mean, make people sit in chairs when they are waiting for emergency appendectomy surgery. Recovery nurses were great only reasons there's a more than one star. Doctors there need some more training in bedside manner and follow up procedures. Edit: our ER doctor was great, Dr Yong.

Jimmy Lewis

The Emergecy felt Kinda dindgy and wait times were rediculas. Arrived about 5am didn't get processed for at least an hour... waiting room was empty. It took 2hrs for a Doctor to read a CAT scan report he had in his hand... which was questionable as it didn't feel the scan was complete. We found nurses laughing at patients behind their backs too.. Cancer victim in pain - ha ha. Waste of 8 hrs we'll never get back. Just another number in a bingo bucket.

Cameron Cloutier

Good healthcare facilities available here. One of the best hospital in region. Very experienced team of doctors. Staff is very polite and helpful.

Saved my goddamn life.

Dan Woywitka

clutching your chest? can't breathe? don't go here. worst protocols and diagnostics of any ER I have even seen. what is wrong with you? did your docs even go to school? no patient history or physical exam for a 100% physical issue. waste of your time. go anywhere else.

Busy place... parking across the street is quite expensive... Tim's in cafeteria is great but needs more than 1 till open...

I'm not sure what anyone's name was sadly but the woman at the door was very helpful because I'd never been to this hospital alone. My receptionist was kind and super fast, especially for a hospital in the middle of the day. My MRI technologist was really nice and the most informative technology I've ever had, he also helped in multiple ways to keep me from twitching and was the first MRI I've fully gotten through without messing up the photos. I cant speak to the rest of the hospital or what hospitalizations like there, but the imaging department was above and beyond my expectations.

Friendly staff

Staffs are polite but the waiting time at even emergency room is ridiculous. The hospital suffers from under staff.

Cannot believe you need a dollar to use a wheelchair! in an emergency situation. It is already 2020 and who real bring coins with them. Smokers right outside the front door should not be tolerated and they always take some wheelchairs for them to sit and smoke. Please do something to enforce no smoking regulation.

Deanna Simon

I've always been treated with kindness every time I've had to come here. ????

I went in for emergency mental help and was thrown around everywhere, kicked out of a private room so I was left with no privacy, open rooms, and sitting where everyone could hear me talk about my situation which should've been private. I was then told that I would get a call from a psychiatrist today but I have yet to get a call and the number they gave me doens't work or wont go through. I'm frustrated and upset that something so serious isn't being handled like it should.

Andrew

Have had good experiences here so far. Emergency can get overloaded with substance abusers which is unfortunate for this area and as a result, increases wait times.

B L

I went here trying to voluntarily commit myself to the psychiatric department. The lady checking me in made me repeat my reasons for being there several times and louder. They took my blood, for reasons completely unknown and unnecessary and without giving me the results. The psychologist/psych nurse was rude and yelled at me to stop crying. I was discharged after waiting to see someone for 4 hours and explaining my desire, means, plan to kill myself. I tried to commit suicide the next day. This hospital will fail you when you need it most.

Brenda Bottyan

I'm not very impressed with the maternity ward. As my daughter was brought here by ambulance as she was 40 weeks along, she woke up to bleeding she was transferred from eagle ridge hospital to Royal Columbian where she was monitored and sent home shortly after she arrived. 24 hours later luckly she was at surrey memorial as her placenta detached and that was the cause of the bleeding. My daughter never even seen a Dr that night at RCH.

Years ago in 2017. I was in a tragic truck accident, I had all my ribs and sternum broken, a smashed up face and I had two compound fractures in my left ankle. I was rushed to this hospital from Langley. I went in for reconstructive surgery right away, and stayed for three - four weeks while I healed. The surgeon was great, the nurses were great. Best hospital in BC! This year in 2020, I went to the ER because I no longer have an ankle joint And I need to have it fused. The doctor got me in right away and a referral to see a surgeon within the same week! I've been waiting to hear from a surgeon for a year and a half. Thank Royal Columbian Hospital in New West. And thank you to the staff there. God bless you Cody Wingerak

I'm sharing my experience from a patient which is myself who has been here a month from now. The whole team came together and try to figure out what was going on with me they're very thorough and their work and professional and warm and friendly as are most of the nurses that have taken care of me they have being attentive warm and friendly as to make me not scared of being alone during this whole process missing my family and friends... they have a great team going on and I'm very thankful for them.

I would of given the hospital a 5 star if it was not for the lady named "Jenn" or "Jass" who works at "Maternity". We were treated so well at labour and delivery by the nurses when my wife was in pain for 4 days before we had the c-section. After recovery, we were trannsfered to "Maternity" so that my wife could heal and do check up. We are first time parents and did not know what to do and what to expect. As my wife had a hard time breast feeding, we called for help and ask if she couks have some formula, so the lady infront name Jenn was like " come get it your self" the tone of her voice was very rude to us. As i went to get the formula another nurse gave it to me, the next day we asked for mote formula again and as i went to grab it, she was mummbling stuff about us to her Co-worker. Like how she acted made us feel really uncomfortable. She mad us feel that we were asking too much and made us feel we were staying their for free. I told the nurse about her attitude and i told her that we paid for the private room, so she does not need to treat us that way. On top of that, the next day when i was walking by to get some water, i over heard another nurse asked her coworker that "a patient was calling regarding that the hot water does not work" and the other nurse repiled, "just ignore them". I just feel that is not the way to treat patients and mothers like that. Whats done is done, but as first time parents we were scared and on top of that, the lady made us feel very uncomfortable. The only good side about RCH is the Labour and Delivery nurse namde"Courtney" and our nurse at Maternity, dont remember her name, she seemed to be from south america "Gabrial"? Or something. I know that next time my baby is born, we will go to another hospital.

Roberto Javier Ruiz Salvatierra

I love the way that the staff of this Hospital treat my family. First my wife realized that she was COVID positive and they give us all the attention that we need during the last days of pregnancy. The Doctors ???? and everyone here have some words to help you or at least hear you. That’s something that is very rare to find in this times. The Procedure that they had with my wife and my first baby was the best that I could expect. Even the way that they have to include father in the birth was universal. And for the last the way they treat us during all the time we were there was the best. 100% recomended, I couldn’t have a better experience. Thanks Royal Columbian ???? From the bottom of my heart ❤️

First experience: I presented to emerg underweight and on medication for hypothyroidism with severe chest pains, palpitations, anxiety attacks, etc - all signs of thyrotoxicosis (later confirmed with labs by my PCP); not a single thyroid lab was run at royal columbian and I was told nothing was wrong and was sent home. There’s a 30% chance of death from thyrotoxicosis!!! Second experience: I presented with extreme fatigue, back pain, numbness and weakness in my lower legs, confusion, and some delirium; I was swabbed for covid-19 and, despite having disconcerting lab values, was again dismissed without further work up - turns out I have a wicked UTI. The doctor literally walked in with a covid swab before beginning to question me, so it’s clear she had no intention of investigating anything I had to say. I cannot speak to everyone who works here, but the nurses and doctors I have interacted with appear to be extremely incompetent.

Went to the ER several times this week for my baby experiencing jaundice, waited 1 hour to see the ER doctor, waited another 2 hours to see the result, and another 1.5 hour for ER doctor to consult pediatric for opinion on the result, my baby's number is almost double comparing to the reference number, yet after waiting for HOURS, the doctor sent us home, and ask us to do more blood sample every 48 hours, no photo therapy or any action.... it's uncomfortable to see many nurses chit chatting, and playing on cellphone while the doctors are busy with patients. Need more doctors and less nurses. From my personal experience, the ER doesn't help to diagnose the real problem, if you are still breathing, they will give you pain killer and send you home.

James Kovacs

A special shout to Dr. Sean MacKenzie and the good staff on the 3rd floor for getting me in and out from surgery with great professionalism and humanity. It's difficult to recommend a hospital just because it's not a place you'd put on your tour but if you end up in a hospital I hope you end up here where they understand care.

Julia Sjogren

Paitient registration was quick despite a full waiting room, things were clean and nurses were polite and attentive in engaging in conversation to ease anxiety

Nancy Blatchford

Health care workers have an impossibly tough job. Everyone expects the highest level of care and attention but they have an enormous workload. I’ve always had good care at this hospital and sometimes amazing service. It’s hard to care about everyone and everything every minute; Please be kind and consider how much work and responsibility they have. When emergency care is needed, they are there for you. The buildings are a bit dated but they are getting a new one in addition to the nice new mental health building. Thanks for all the care we’ve received here!

we had a horrible experience yesterday at the main register. From the very beginning, she started to show her attitude . That lady asked some information from my friend who was in labor and my friend could not express herself very clearly , she basically asked my friend to shut up. I was totally shocked! Luckily I got her name, will fill a complaint later!

Lot of the nurses have a terrible attitude. Lot of clueless, and waiting. Every time I’ve come to this hospital, they couldn’t care to solve my issues, because they see that I’m young. Sent me off with Tylenol, which made my issues worst. Not a fan.

Went in for a self diagnosed occipital pain from rheumatoid arthritis. They assigned me to ear nose and throat machine, resulting in a three hours long wait which the nerve pain (feeling as if I’m getting my teeth pulled) - has slowly resided. Left before the wait time was up. Staff is unfortunately lacking in the empathy department, which shows a poor system to ensure and prepare staff mental health. Canada needs to privatize hospital and health care to promote innovation.

(Translated) I have to say that the efficiency of Canadian doctors is not high. As long as you are not in danger, it will be no doubt that you will wait in line for three or four hours. Having said that, it is still very hard to help me deal with the wound, so give a Samsung. (Original) 不得不说,加拿大医生的办事效率并不高,只要你没生命危险,让你排队等三四个小时是毫无疑问的。话说回来,帮我处理伤口时还是很用心的,所以给个三星。

The ER staff have a very angry attitude, and aggressive demeanor, which is very offputting and feels unsafe at times. I went to the ER in extreme pain and was belittled and demeaned by Dr. P. McDonald for attempting to ask for clarification about medication I was prescribed. It was a very traumatizing experience for a frightened, ill person in pain. I would recommend going to Eagle Ridge Hospital instead if possible.

They have remodeled fairly recently, but it doesn't make it any easier to get a seat or a bed. The old lobby has been converted to more waiting room space with chairs though. Unfortunately there's no privacy and you spend most of your ER yime kn a chair now with no curtain. Half on the e.r. staff is friendly helpful and understanding. Parking is expensive - be prepared with coins.

Jennifer Zsiak

I was there for hours. They did some tests then told the person I was with everything was normal so i was discharged. I never saw a doctor at all. No one came to see how i was after the tests or explain to me what was happening. I still felt awful. I was exhausted and terrified. The girl who discharged me was so rude it was kind of disgusting. Please take the time to drive some where else. Honestly felt so small and worthless. I will never willingly go here again

My mother was taken into the emergency because she complained of chest pain and difficulty breathing after testing positive for COVID-19. We waited over an hour for the X-ray to be taken. After three hours, no one came to tell her the results and there was no help available around her. When she called for help from the very few staff members passing by, they ignored her because they knew she was in the COVID positive zone. She then called me and said that she’s feeling worse. Not knowing what to do, I went to the check-in reception and described the situation to them. They told me that they’re very busy, and that there’s nothing to do but wait. They also told me to go back into the car immediately because I’ve been exposed to COVID and that if I don’t leave at that instant, they would report me to the police to capture me. They then started to question me about my work, school, etc. and that I was lucky to not have been reported yet. Feeling concerned and confused, I went back to the car. It wasn’t until an hour later when someone finally stopped for my mom’s call for help. When she asked if they had her X-ray results, all they said was, “Oh, you can go”. In the end, the staff at the check-in reception was extremely rude and my mother did not receive the care that she needed. I definitely did not appreciate the questioning and threatening from check in receptionists, nor did I appreciate the neglect of a patient from the medical staff. Though I understand that it is not safe for me to be where I was after a COVID exposure, the situation was not handled properly by the staff.

Best hospital ever! I was there 6 times last 2 years: an abdominal emergency before the pandemics; an abdominal ultrasound a week after; a cardiac emergency during the pandemics; a two days cardiac exam 2 months ago; and, an artery stents implant 10 days ago. First things first: the level of professionalism of all the staff and the equipment at their disposal are great. But the treatment that I received (with the exception of the ultrasound) looks like I was in a very good hotel - about that, I think that is important to say that the staff there transmit happiness (with the rare exception of the ultrasound). Guys, congrats!

I had my daughter at Royal Colombian a week ago. I went 2 weeks overdue and had to have multiple inductions and ended up with an emergency cesarean. The nurses and OBs made me feel heard and supported throughout my experience. Even with the abrupt changes to the birth plan I felt safe and in good hands.

ER sucks, sucks, sucks hereThey will do you MRI in a way that you will forget your name and if you're married, no kidding. Based on their MRI you would need brain surgery even if you're completely healthy. Also they allow unauthorized personnel to interact with you in a bad way and don't do anything even after multiple complains. In other departments doctors and nurse are more professional, food is (barely) edible. For patients who spent most their time in the hospital they need a newer tv (commmon you can't spare $400 from the budget for new LG TV?) and Netflix subscription. Hogs and fitness classes are pretty cool by it only happened twice, better be twice weekly. Outside passes are also pretty. That's why 2 stars but ER really deserves negative rating.

I'm not going to speak on the ER or the fact that beds are now lining the hallways of the various wings. I'll just say that this hospital is in serious need of some sort of support. On the other hand, the doctors are very thorough and the nurses (on 5B) are great.

I don’t do a lot of revues and it's usually a good ones and once in a while a bad one. I had to and I wanted to wright this one. On February 28/18 my mother was admitted to Royal Columbian she was going for the heart surgery. Why it came to this, why her health was so neglected it's another story. The reception wasn’t really clear and didn't even made an effort to explain properly where to go and how to get where she needed to be. Also some of the stuff was just rude. Not everyone was unprofessional lots of good people but some folks should not work there. I had to ask for everything from information to basic staff for my mother’s comfort. Some people would say stuff like “hospital staff are very tired and they deal with a lot of crap”, I get it. But when you work in environment where care and courtesy required. Those people that you care for life at stake and you behave like you work at the factory or butcher shop! Than this work is not for you! And if someone doesn't agree, then I hope it will happen to your close ones so that you can feel like I did. My mom went truth the surgery on March 1 everything went good. She was pushed out of the hospital March 9 and in the morning March 17 she died. Its life, nothing I could do, everyone says it faith. I don’t blame everybody but just want to share my experience and Royal Columbian was sucks! There was few people I remember that was really good I wish only best to them. Doctor was just like factory manager. And Kerren skinny grey haired “nurse“ should not work there! Parking it's just a rubbery! Some stuff rude or become aggressive as soon as they hear accent. Lost all confidence in our Health system.

Sharon Sa

This is a HOSPITAL. Not a clinic. It is not a requirement for the staff to sugarcoat every person or every situation that comes through that door. Emergency rooms are designed for EMERGENT cases. Stop being so bigoted and understand that you're not the only person with a painful situation. (Especially for stepping on broken glass. You can fix that at home with a first aid kit, easily.) You often forget that behind those doors, there are people being transferred based off how urget the medical requirement needed is. They can't take all cases seriously, especially when there are hundreds of duds a day. It's become this way truly because of people like the ones leaving personal bad reviews here, are walking into the ER with a small problem. Yes, they are understaffed and overworked. That's the Canadian health system and quite frankly, it's been that way for quite some time. But it's covered a vast majority of your medical bills on a yearly basis and if we can't find the time to be thankful, (even to the mean nurses or doctors,) then why the hell are you walking into the ER in the first place?

Emily Nguyen

My dad is currently omitted in 4N and experiencing a small brain bleed from a car accident. I am the one that lives and take care of him, but one of the nurses refuses to give me any information or updates about his current state. It’s very frustrating for me that I can’t get any sort of contact with him and being left in the dark.

Gurpreet Sandhu

If you don't mind waiting half a day in pain just to have someone simply acknowledge your existence and then wait the rest of the day to recieve service. Then this is the place for you. Productivity and efficiency obviously are not important to the staff here, as Facebook tends to steal the staffs attention away from the patients. I'm here today on a Thursday night, bleeding from the ears and there are only 2 doctors in the ER. They hire 3 staff members to sit in the lobby all day and hand out masks but can only schedule 2 doctors in the ER. Whomever does the scheduling here should be fired! I think the worst part of the experience at this hospital is that despite ridiculous wait times, the staff like to make joke at the patients about the wait times. They arnt ashamed of their inefficiency, they are proud of it.

Lena N

Terrible horrible place. I am being poisoned with medication I don't need and they are just evil here. Terrible

Fast service for the emergency. A much better choice than Surrey Memorial. Only gripe is that for blood tests, they roll this small chart and do tests right in the waiting room. Although it doesn’t bother me, drawing blood can scare kids and make others uncomfortable.

Jasmine Stearns

Pediatric Emergency is first class. They helped my daughter recover from anaphylaxis, listened to my concerns and called me promptly when they realized that we had left something behind. The Ped ER rooms are mostly nice and quiet, so my daughter could rest. It made what had been a scary experience much easier to handle.

A few years ago, my father had an emergency surgery. After he was transferred to post op ward, the nurse who, I guess, was at his mid 30, keep asking me why my father was keep going to the bathroom and was very restless, I said I dont know because he does not answer me, but I was about to ask you because you are the signed nurse. He was puzzled and with a rude tone of voice asked my father " why are you keep going to the washroom?" My dad was not fully alert so he did not answer. I was annoyed and said I think he does not do it for fun maybe he has a problem. I was expecting that if the nurse was not able to figure out a patient basic problem he might talk to his nurse leader or ask other for help but he didn't. luckily, his shift was over soon. later, a nice smart nurse took over. I told her what issue my father was having at that time. As soon as she saw my dad, she said she think he is not able to urinate because he has distended bladder. She brought the bladder scanner and then inserted a urinary catheter. Finally, my dad was able to take rest after hours he was back from surgery. I thanked the nurse for her quick and smart intervention. I think she truly was a professional and competent nurse, but unfortunately the previous nurse beside being incompetent, he had poor patient interaction. That was a very disappointing experience that how a nurse who is not even able to figure out a basic nursing care would work on a surgical ward.

This hospital is one of the largest and most equipped in the FHA region. Services for mental health are poor, especially if folks are coming in to the ER with mental health concerns. Training is needed for frontline staff for psychiatric emergences, for sure.

Willy Ruder

Great efficient service!

Kevin

Pretty terrible. Went there for mental health reasons and was discharged after only the mandatory 3 day stay (despite my therapist and me requesting i stay longer as inpatient) . Was suicidal and sent home still feeling suicidal. Refused to diagnose me with ptsd for the simple reason that my trauma happened more then once. Was able to easily self harm more then once infront of the nurses without anybody caring. All in all, terrible.

Lucia Negra

My mom was admitted here and I had spent every day of her two-week stay at this hospital visiting her. There are definite improvements in order. However, the nursing staff cared and took care of my mom and treated us very kindly. I was certainly glad for the level of care that my mom received.

Sean Turvey

I have been to their emergency room on a number of occasions. I have always been treated professionally and compassionately. The wait used to be long however they have recently renovated in an effort to treat more people faster.

Don't you just love going to the hospital with an actual problem, just to have the staff think you're crazy, check you in all the wrong places and sending you home saying you're okay. Also having to repeat your symptoms 5 times. I think they expect you to come in knowing exactly what you have in all the good words. They do the bare minimum and send you home. Also some of the male doctors have a condescending attitude. Did not feel comfortable .

For the most part really great hospital. Most of the staff was good. Food was terrible.

Fairly large hospital but the emergency room is brutal like most hospitals. The wait times are very long. This is a trauma hospital and staff here are nice too.

Alive today after Bypass surgery Sept 29th 2017. The cardiac services are exceptional and truly life saving. Thanks to dr's, nurses, technicians, food services, housekeeping and rehab services. I will pay this forward.

Murrie Redman

Many of my relatives receive and have received care in this fine hospital. It is a people place where, yes, you are attended to in a triage system - the only kind viable in an emergency ward. As to the food, it is nutritious and adequate in a setting where all tastes must be met. It's not a hotel after all. The staff are considerate and professional as well as very, very busy. My thanks for giving excellent care recently and successfully to someone undergoing brain surgery with Dr. Chan, another boon to medical care. Thanks so much.

I have to extend a huge thank you to the nurses and doctors in the Labour and Delivery/Maternity Unit at RCH. I had a wonderful experience and found everyone I encountered to be friendly, prompt, caring, efficient and knowledgeable. I had some complications arise at the end of my pregnancy and everyone in the maternity unit was so lovely and helpful to deal with. I want to extend a big thank you to Kristie, Alex, Tina, Lucy and especially Louisa for providing such amazing care. Dr. Yun delivered our daughter and she was an absolute pleasure to deal with - really, really going above and beyond to provide amazing care. Going to the hospital is a fairly stressful experience but the nursing staff and doctors at RCH really helped put me at ease. I feel so grateful to have been given such great care and really can't thank everyone enough for making our birthing journey such a memorable and positive one. Thank you so much!

Security here were nicer than the doctors and nurses. Went in thru ambulance for having a panic attack and when i went in and couldn't breathe the nurse told me to be quiet and that i was being a nuisance to other patients then proceeded to role me out to the ambulance drop off alone and not come back for a while and once they did they threw clothes and all my stuff on me and said my blood work was fine and to leave. rate this 0 stars and will never go back again rudest staff ever.

Lisa J

Charge RN was rude, cold as was Dr. Lui. It only got worse by a condescending psychiatrist Dr. Mathews. Because I was new to New Westminster and was out of my SSRIS I was advised I could get a referral to psychiatric outpatient or a psychiatrist from psych emergency. I was told I could get 14 days supply of the SSRIs (reluctantly) by this doctor but I would not be getting a referral and it takes 6 months to get to see a psychiatrist thru New Westminster Mental health. I was devastated. I said what do I do when my 2 weeks of meds run out then? He asked if I was suicidal I said not today but in two weeks maybe if I suddenly stopped my medication. So that is when this clearly burned out bitter man played the mind game - with a distraught honest woman- who was overwhelmed with recent events that set me back with my PTSD and accused me of being "gamesy" and stormed out of the non private room. Leaving me baffled as to whether we were done or if I was to leave? Having worked in emergency medical care for 25 years myself, I am appalled at the treatment I received here today. Time to get out of your profession if your patience and compassion can't handle the hectic shifts anymore and you need to be unsympathetic to a person who is sick.

Kai-Chun Lin

My daughter fell and bit both the inside and outside of her lips... Given our experience in another hospital's emergency room, we thought it might be another 5+ hours affair. Turned out the whole process took less than an hour, and everyone there were friendly and professional. However I should note this is the time of covid-19 where the inflow to the emergency room is lower than average, which might partly explain the speediness.

Leo Chang

Waited 3 hours for pretty much nothing. Have patients sitting and standing all over the building as the nurses just stand around and chat. The front counter was also super rude like all she wants is to get off her shift. Horrible experience

The worst hospital ever. The emergency room waiting is over 6 hours unless you are really dying. Staff is always in rush and do not answer patients very patiently. Do not go here.

Silka Delaney

My first trip to Royal Columbian was a great experience. Snagged a good parking spot right away! The patient registration staff were kind and very clear. Shanthi, the RN that got me ready for my procedure was lovely. Alex who took my blood was great, very personable. And of course Dr. Medvedev, thank you for being so pleasant and descriptive of what to expect before, during and after my procedure. Thank you all very much for what you do.

Any future mothers - I delivered at RCH at the advice of my doctor. It is a decision I regret. Whilst many nurses are well intentioned and helpful, too many are not. The nurse assigned to me appeared to be perhaps not the most knowledgeable and diligent nurse in the ward, robbing me of valuable skin to skin and an opportunity for the baby to latch. The doctor did not bother appearing at the birth and I felt that to be very sad given that I chose RCH because my doctor told me the medical care would be strong. I also felt that this contributed to the injuries I sustained. The medical decisions were lax - they left me screaming for hours and the nurse assigned to me did not bother checking on my situation in a timely manner. By the time another nurse checked me to advise that I was sufficiently dilated, my contractions had slowed and the nurse suggested I rush my delivery, contributing to injury to myself. I was in a lot of pain and very vocal and believe the head nurse was just too busy to deal with me and assigned me a nurse who appeared less experienced (she didn't know how to use some of the machinery and other nurses needed to assist although I think she meant well). Some personnel, including the LC, Chantelle, the anesthetist, a few other nurses, were very nice, but unfortunately the number of lax or inexperienced staff was too much and this meant that the quality of care I received was sub-par. In future, go with a midwife or a specialized carer who will devote time and attention to mothers, and be there for you at your delivery, and not trust that you will be in good hands at RCH given it's a luck of the draw. It's a decision which not only affects you but your baby so spend some time evaluating this decision properly. I wouldn't want anyone else to experience what I did in terms of the medical "support". Finally, when being discharged, the head nurse at the time and her staff were very good and took extra care with my situation. But we had to wait for the doctor who needed to officially discharge us. After waiting for hours and hours, we were finally told that he would not be turning up so we were finally allowed to leave, after being exhausted waiting around for him. Thanks for that RCH and I hope that Fraser Health takes responsibility for the lax standards of care and volume of staff that outweigh the professional and caring nurses that I met (thank you to them and a big thumbs down to the doctor and the overnight nurse who scolded me for letting my baby cry after being exhausted/not knowing what to do/having lost a lot of blood). PS I have edited my review to add additional details. At this point, I would also like to thank Fraser Health staff for responding to my comment. I appreciate that very much. Unfortunately, it happened, and no feedback will help me with that - nor do I think things will change as a result of what I say. Thank you anyway, it helps to know that Fraser Health might care.

Nicola E Spurling

Absolutely atrocious treatment of trans people! I witnessed staff purposefully misgendered a suicidal trans person, then perform bloodwork on them (they have a fear of needles), then send them home without any kind of therapy or medication, and without any suggestions for how to find help other than to suggest they come back the next day (assuming they would still be alive and someone would be able to help them) where they would have to go through the blood work a second time (meaning they didn’t have to put this person with a needle phobia through the experience of having blood work done the first time).

Linda Sleight

My husband needed to be air lifted out of Mexico because his kidneys shut down and he was at death's door. I chose RCH and I'm so glad I did. He was in critical care for a few days and I can't thank the staff enough for everything that they have done for him. I sincerely believe that had he had gone anywhere else he would have died. Dr. Carpanito and all the staff in ICU never took their eyes off Ron who was in dire straits. You have all given me back my husband and you deserve to be praised over and over again. Lana and Dave you went over and above the call of duty. There were so many people in ICU that cared for my husband and I'm sorry if I don't remember all the names. I haven't a simple complaint. I was constantly in awe of these professionals and their empathy and perfection in all they do. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Wonderful human beings. Makes this world a brighter place. Best hospital in the Lower Mainland!!!! From Linda Sleight Foster and Ron Foster

Whatever the reason don’t come here. So busy, unorganized, take you a long time for everything. I’m a dr my self in my country, but that’s not how I treat my patient in emergency room. I have my gallbladder stone pain(that time I didn’t know what it was, they didn’t know either). They think it’s appendicitis, I said I had appendictomy before. And the site of pain is so different, appendicitis is down right abdomen. My pain was right upper abdomen, I said it’s probably from my gallbladder. And they still think it’s an UTI, oh my... I don’t even have a pee problem. 4 hours in pain waiting, glad I bring my painkillers. My liver function was elevated, but they didn’t tell me anything. Just go ultrasound they said and told me to leave. After that I go to walk in doctor and she refer me to surgeon because my stone is big and impact my daily activity (hurt after meal, I can’t go to the gym anymore) and I need to do MRI for my liver.

JS M

Thank you so much to the surgeons for saving my life. Words can't express how thankful I am for you guys.. Also all the nurses, doctors and social workers who gave me hopes and motivations, thank you... I really do appreciate you guys from my heart.. I was the one to try to end my life for a very dumb reason, now I'm trying to live my second life. Without you all people at RCH I might have just ended up doing the same thing to myself.. Again Thank you...!

I had a good experience seeing DR. PAUL MATHERS at Emerg few days ago after having pain in my lower right abdomen. I want to thank him for his care and being a great Dr. He takes his time explaining my lab and tests without feeling rush even it was crazy busy. You need to wait but the wait was worth it. All the staff from lab asst, ultrasound, ct scan and nurses were effecient and nice. Thank you for the service! Keep it up!!

Shandley H.

Amazing! Look, I know the emergency room can be hectic and wait times are quite unreasonable but we all know that's because of those using it who do not absolutely need to. As far as I'm concerned, if you are not hemorrhaging, obviously broken boned, have a fever of 100.5 or higher, or did not arrive in an ambulance, wait a day and go see your GP or walk-in clinic. This is not our story. We had our first baby here! Everyone from support staff to the two OBs we saw were nothing but mannered and supportive in every way. It almost felt like being waited on in an all inclusive resort (so naturally, we did not feel like we should be taking advantage of it). All options we were presented were non-bias and fully explained to us. If we needed something, it was brought to us right away! Did I mention free wifi on the maternity ward? Not on the labour and delivery ward through. They need your focus elsewhere :) The meals were for patients only. I, as a non-patient, had to go buy my own food in the cafeteria. No problem! Tim Horton's is down there as well! :) "Check-Out" was easy but not without some mandatory and very useful information. I thought I had our car seat good but they were quick to point out some looseness in the straps. They were helpful but also made sure that I learned how to do it properly. My ONLY complaint is the parking fees. They had the Allen street parking lot blocked off for renovations, which will be going on for quite a while, and there are no other 24hour parking options. The underground is for employees only. 12 hours of parking in the north-west lot cost me over $70! My parents ended up coming to take our vehicle home and picking us up later just to save that enormous bill. Keep that in mind! All around a great experience! I'd go to RCH over Surrey or Peace Arch any day!

Ralph Aquino

Just came out from this hospital. Ladies and men in blue, dark blue and light blue uniforms especially Ryan Mariano (RN) did a good job on my care here. Would highly recommend this hospital if I still need to (hopefully not anymore ☺️☺️☺️). Thank you

One east Indian lady (I didn't manage to get her name) at the Medical Imaging is fairly rude, very impatient when checking me in, and throwing my care card on the counter as her way of returning it. When they scheduled my appointment, they insist that I come early an hour and 30 minutes prior because they explained there's prior prep required. When I arrive, the lady told me that I have to wait for an hour and a half no matter what because that is what is showing in their system. Very disorganized and poor manner staff. Hospital director should conduct a performance review periodically otherwise this becomes a very poor representation of the overall hospital staff.

Ron Godfroid

If I could give less than one star I would. A close relative spent 2 weeks on their vascular ward. 2 weeks of writhering pain. Some good nurses but few and far between. Now receiving excellent care at VGH.

Kasek

Check in staff at emergency counter are very rude and snappy. No patience to ask questions asked. No patience to get answers to questions they ask. Overall staff are snappy and miserable, in a job where your supposed to be helping people, you would think they might be a little more friendly.

Trevor Drakes

Would rate this 3.5 if I could. Well, at least it's not Surrey Memorial. I'm also grateful that the ambulance brought me here instead of Eagle Ridge (which is closer to my house). I heard horror stories from the nurses about other hospitals, and I'm sure it happens everywhere, but I did feel safe with the personnel here. Unfortunately, I was in a large shared room (psych emerg) overnight, and originally they put me next to an insane creepy guy who had a habit of standing over other patients' beds. Eventually some more competent nurses came along, realized the situation, and moved my bed to the opposite side of the room (thank you). The food was alright, but I've never had an issue with hospital food. Maybe I just have low standards. Tea for bedtime was good. The doctor in psych emerg was terrible. The only reason I'm giving the hospital 4 stars is because hopefully he's not a reflection of the hospital. He talked with me for less than 5 minutes and prescribed me Paxil (paroxetine), the drug that led to the death of Chris Rice in 2002. No thank you. Overall, probably your best bet, but still not great.

S gra

absoloutely HORRIBLE! I came here bleeding after I had an adenoid and tonsil surgery. I was puking out large blood clots, spitting out an extreme amount of blood and it was becoming really hard to breathe. I told them I was scared, espeically because this had already happened the day after my surgery and I was taken to the hospital (where they clearly didnt check what was causing the bleeding since it happened again). The staff told me that I had to wait 3 hours because of how busy it was. I had to RUSH to Burnaby hospital and was taken in immediately for surgery to stop the bleeding. I spoke with the surgeon and he couldnt believe that they turned me away when I clearly needed immediate medical attention. I can't believe people like that work in the medical field!

Bryce O'Connor

The fact that emergency patients are forced to pay for parking is extremely insulting, a couple dollars would be fine but 5$ and hour is ridiculous! biggest reason for drop to 3 stars from 5!

I needed the emergency ward on Oct. 25, 2016. My 911 call brought help within 20 minutes. The care was superlative, from the ambulance attendants to all of the RCH staff. I am grateful to live where such help is available.

Nurses in 2 north and 2 south have really bad attitude

O A

This is not a hospital that helps preserve health or aid patients. The ER is a complete joke and the doctors are clueless. We’ve seen several doctors here and each time the service has been ridiculously poor. We had a nurse give my pregnant wife the results of another pregnant ladies lab work indicating a pending miscarriage. This blatant breach of confidentiality and sheer lack of remorse on the nurse’s end shows the degree to which the staff here run things. Canadian Health Care at its finest.

Worst ever, wait over 5hr for 5min talk.. Some staffs are horrible and do not care about patient at all. Cant stand the fact that they are gettingbpaid with high salary with such low quality services that thet have

I was pleasantly surprised, the staff was very friendly and caring Yes the wait is one of the longest, but may be if people stop coming to emerg as if it was a walking clinic... May be educating public better would help Thank you to ALL the staff, u were wonderful

Emergency doctor & nurses were very kind & professional.

Bad experience Dr Hassanain Toma at the Neurology department from the start to finish, arrogant and not respectful, and most importantly he shouldn't be working as an MD. Unethical. I was reluctant to post this review until one of the staff I wanted to talk to and complain about him she has also confirmed that I'm not the first one. Avoid this Dr at all cost. Also I read from other review platforms when he was practicing in USA his incompetence led to death of a patient. Clearly he moved to my home town from USA to mask his failure.

After 12 hours waiting for tests and results i walked out of emergency at 2 am I and zero answers as to why I cant walk when I left....in exactly the same pain as I arrived in......zero immediate help

Delia Cassatini

I am 80 years old and had the privilege of having my TAVY procedure here by Dr.Latham and Dr. Charania. I can’t say enough about the excellent care I received and I feel so much better. It was reassuring for me to get this high quality care so close to my North Burnaby home. Wish I could have had it done sooner, but their hands are tied due to limited OR times. I would have felt this much better almost a year ago when I was diagnosed with a calcified aortic heart valve had there been the opportunity to have it earlier. I was impressed at every level of care at RCH!!

Lynn Kennedy

Thank for taking such great care of me in the ER, despite a very busy waiting room. I appreciated the professionalism and kindness shown to me by every staff member.

The hospital is smaller than it looks, and is on a weird hill. Parking is expensive in the lots, so it's best to park on the streets - not the parking lots - beside it.

Anastasia Smith

I don’t even know where to begin . Only positive I can say is that the emergency / triage nurses are good at their jobs. Horrible experience in hau. My father was suffocating and he was constantly ignored In HAU until they realized he was in fact needing intubation, after several days of them telling him “ he’s fine” . When he needed a tracheostomy , the medical team hit an important vessel that resulted into bleeding into his lungs several times. They had to send him to vgh and thank god they did, once he was in vghs hands everything was under control and even looking better. Do not bring your loved one here if they are critically ill.

The labour and delivery team at Royal Columbian Hospital is incredible. I can't say enough about how compassionate and professional they were during a trying time.

Murtaza Changezi

So we are waiting at the er and this dr lady calls some womans name and the woman falls down on the floor as she gets up to go see the dr. The nurse/drs reaction was "its ok let her fall" and she just walked away. This is such a terrible behavior from a medical personel

I am here with my family as my father is in the intensive care unit. We were called back here at 5 am say they did not think our father would make it through the night. We rushed here from our hotel as We are all from out of town. my baby sister asked the icu staff just for a blanket as she is extremely cold in the waiting room. The icu staff refused to give my baby sister the simple comfort of a blanket In this extremely difficult time. I am completely disgusted with this treatment. Thanks for all the "support"

If you are looking for professional place to give birth to a child , this is not the place to have it . Consider flying to a 3rd world country for better conditions and for cheaper than it is to park overnight A single star rating is too high for this dump Inconsiderate staff Poor communication Run down/ dirty equipment and room conditions. Double booking Favouritism Awful cafeteria that opens to street level allowing riffraff and junkies access to what ever they want Very very expensive parking

every time I have being to the world from be a hospital I received excellent care weather in the emergency or on the floor outstanding job thank you

Excellent ER nurses and health care is above average compared to Surrey Memorial Hospital. The wait times here are usually less than other hospitals. The process to diagnose and care for patients is efficient and effective.

Ev parking abused by staff (permitted vehicles) ... standard rules of 3 hrs parking not enfirced on staff. I come to this hospital frequently and parking not enforced in ev leaving people unable to charge their vehicles. Would be nice if it was enforced evenly and staff was accountable for their vehicles. I had administrator tell me it was an emergency dr and he didnt have time to be accountable, only to find out he was there for a conference not an emergency and eventually moved his vehicle on break when another dr comllained. We are all here for tramatic / emergent reasons and deserve same opportunities. If you can get there to move your vehicle after the required 3 hrs dont park there!

Trying to find out info on my dad and my sister (whom we dont talk) told them to not give any info to us over the phone. Who are they to judge and know our history. The nurses are uncaring and rude!

Jacob Alex

If you are planning to go to this hospital for baby delivery, you must think twice. You should know that you are not allowed to leave even after passing all the usual steps. You must see a useless social worker to discuss your financial situation, and in the end of the day they do not offer any financial help anyways. Plus becareful they do not know what they are doing as they took blood samples from our baby, and when i ask them for what is that they answer the same thing. Obviously they are not in the same page and lots of people trying to pass thier traning by proforming useless tasks. Will never ever be back.

I had a mayor surgery here. I cannot be more grateful for my doctor and the nurses who took care of me. Such caring and hardworking people. ER was a different story (my experience), rude nurses that are not nice and just wasting time chatting about their personal lives while there's a bunch of sick people waiting outside for hours. I will never go back to that area, but for other deparments there's great people that dedicate their lives to help others!

It was a nightmare for my spouse in the stressful environment created by the nurse Sharan. She was very rude, impolite, and ill mannered. She was not at all supportive during the entire period of delivery. She did not help my spouse change her regular clothes into hospital gown. She did not assist my spouse to change her position while administering the Epidural anesthesia. My spouse suffered a lot during the entire period and she was depressed and had she suffered enormous psychological and physical trauma due to the unruly behavior of nurse Sharan. I am not sure why her behavior was so different from other staff at the hospital, is she racially motivated against some race or community? I humbly request Fraser Health, the hospital administration, and the concerned authorities to thoroughly investigate the matter and take strict disciplinary action against the nurse Sharan so that other patients would not experience the same in the future.

This just like almost every hospital in the LM is garbage. Single payer keeps useless Dr's amd nurses in the practice and makes the wait time even for life threatening injuries insanely long. Someone almost died in the triage tonight and they dont even care, I hope this place gets shut down so all these pathetic excuses for medical aides jabe to find another job.

We brought my girlfriend here to get help for her bipolar disorder/depression episode. A resident doctor name Chloe asked that we bring her mobile device in so that she can make a phone call to someone overseas to clear some things up on her mind as it may help with the treatment. She assured us that we will get the device back if something bad were to happen. Something bad happened. She’s not in her right mind at the moment, other patients inside the psych ward with her has been taking advantage of her and asking her to buy them things through Amazon. After discovering her maxing out her credit card buying random gadgets for hundreds of dollars (she is not financially stable herself to be doing this) for people in there and shipping it to their addresses, we reported it to the nurse and we received the response that “she’s not a 16 year old, she can control her own financials, we cannot give the phone back because its her right to have it.” Fine. We had to take things in our own hands and contacted the financial institutions to explain the situation and they were understanding enough to reverse some of the transactions and freeze the accounts. Problems after problems. She apparently picked up smoking cigarettes and vaping nicotine with other patients inside, someone who hasn’t picked up a cigarette in her life, is now smoking 3-4 cigarettes a day. She is now asking us to bring cigarettes in for her and telling us to ask for a specific nurse name Aline (who is the one enabling them) to sneak them in. We once again called in to ask for a case manager this time since the doctor was not helping. The case manager said theres no policy against smoking in the hospital and patients have the right to smoke. Its been nearly 3 weeks now, she is still unstable. The worst part of all this is, she will be leaving this hospital with a new addiction to tobacco and in debt from all the financial decisions she made while not in her right mind while in this hospital. If you truly care about your love ones, I would not recommend this hospital. Update: Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worst. Doctor called us to let her know she’s will be discharged sometime Monday or Tuesday couldn’t give us a for sure answer. Monday no calls, Tuesday no calls. We ended up calling into the hospital and found out she was actually discharged earlier in the day Tuesday. The hospital let her leave BY HERSELF. We spent hours trying to find her. And only through the help of close friends we were able to locate her safely. Update #2: my girlfriend was 1 of 2 girls in the ward with 10+ other guys. She was paired up to be roommates with another guy. During covid I wasn’t allowed to visit, in her mind I had abandoned her. She started to spend time with her schizophrenic roommate and they started a relationship inside. When she left the hospital she never came home. Instead she took off with him to a shady appartment together. The doctor never called us to notify us that she was discharged. They let her go with the other patient together. And just like that my manic bipolar girlfriend has left our happy 8 year relationship to move in with someone with psychosis/schizophrenia that she had only met for 3 weeks. I am left heartbroken and its all because of this hospital’s carelessness.

I had very sad experience at ER. Met very arogant inpatient reception staff. I totally understand about it very busy waiting time is long. understand. . but to provide infomation for patient who visit for the first time is one of their job I believe. Otherwise AI will take over their position anytime soon. .. This is not review for doctor and nurse there. not securitystaff. it for reception staff at ER

On my way out of the hospital today I witnessed a man being violently flung to the floor while screaming "no, no!" A big security guard got completely on top of him. I was shocked at what I saw, and I was afraid for the man on the ground. A nurse came and said, "are you looking for something?" I told her I was about to leave and she said "the exit is right there." Of course it was, but that was code for "leave now." I told her I would leave soon, but she then told me that I didn't need to be there. That sounded like something someone says when they are covering up a violent crime by the authorities, and so I just stood there deliberately. Then she said I was "interfering," that I was "there for the show," and that I was "blocking the way." I was standing just inside the end of the ER entrance/exit, and I was off to one side completely--you could have driven a car in it without hitting me. I wasn't filming, I wasn't speaking, I wasn't touching anyone or impeding any space, and certainly I wasn't interfering. The nurse then invaded my body space, blocked my view, and insisted that I leave, and accused me of violating "the patient's" privacy. I wanted to say that he would say that the hospital staff were violating him, but like a coward, I left. Maybe I should have moved along right away, but the nurse's words, body language, and mannerisms made me suspicious. I wonder what happened to that poor man. I didn't want to make trouble for him, or for the guard who took him down (maybe he had a good reason), but I just had a very bad feeling from that nurse's behavior. -- As for the hospital itself, in all other respects, it seemed very well-run.

This hospital must not care, I've heard of misdiagnosis and rushing patients through because doctors and staff make money based on how many patients pass through the door in a day but seriously I should not be getting a better diagnosis from web me or Google than going to the hospital. No diagnosis no proper treatment, extremely rushy. I'd rather wait longer and get better treatment

Komal Sharma

I would never recommend this hospital to anyone. I went to the ER with a sports injury to my knee. Not only did they make me wait an hour with pain but also didn't do my exam right. After spending 2 years in pain I found out that I have a complete ACL tear. They ignored my purple knee and told me that I'm in pain cause I'm tired and gave me crutches. The nurses doing my exam weren't listening to me or my mom and instead were discussing what they're going to eat for lunch. All they wanted was to get rid of me. Never would I go back and would also tell those hungry nurses to quit their job and and eat, cause clearly they have no clue how to do their jobs. Considering that this job brings food to their plates they're clearly don't respect it one bit. I spent 2 years in pain cause they were "too hungry".

This is a great hospital. We had an emergency and just about everyone was very caring professional. from the nurses to the doctors and technician. Nurse Estelle from the e.r was amazing! They were very thorough. My only gripe would be the young lady at admitting was abit on the rough side other than that this is a great hospital.

Moonmoon datta

Very bad experience with emergency nurses, so rude, why they are in this profession and who hired them? No body should go this hospital ever

Melika Zamani

The reception nurses are so rude. They don't explain the check-in process and bark at you if you take a mistep. They also shout your medical app information so the whole waiting area can hear. No respect for privacy....I wonder if they've received any complaints to the BC privacy commissioner.

Worst experience in an Emergency hospital. Felt like a number. I hardly ever go to hospitals anymore as I don’t believe in wasting there time. I was recommended to go there. But I am not well. I know my own body and I don’t feel right. Pain and inflammation, pins and needles tingling thoughout my body even my head throbbing ear and sinuses pain throughout my face and jaw and more things are happening as well. I am generally healthy but not recently. My doctor is closed. I wouldn’t have went but I am not well. The doctor and nurse looked at me like why are you here. I went there to get help and was treated poorly did blood tests but doctor didn’t say anything just said your fine you need to see your Gp. Didn’t care just a number. I realize there are more critical patients than me but I came there to get answers and didn’t get help at all. Rude ER doctor. Never will go back there.

Huda Zamzam

I went their and the registration window was closed, you don't know exactly where you should go, and the hospital too big, and no body can answer you clearly????

Always a great place to come. It’s a hospital so waits are long but always pleasant.

Sangeeta Chettiar

The front desk is so quick for emergency department but the nurse is very rude. It was an Indian nurse treating all patients like she is in India. She was screaming at patients. I was in so much pain instead of quickly treating me she is asking me why did I wait so long to come to the hospital. Worst service ever. Never coming back to this hospital.

Super rude staff in Tim Hortons at Royal Columbian! But after my family member being in Surrey Hospital and now transferred to Royal Columbia, I have encountered pretty nice staffing and nurses. They have answered all my families questions, and to be really honest OMG I didn't realize how much of a bio hazard Surrey Memorial is, ew. Thanks RC for keeping this place clean and dignified.

ER needs to be updated. in 2021, ceilings in some rooms are collapsing, doors and walls are peeled off. I'm not talking about patients, doctors and nurses who work with patients, I think it is morally difficult to be in such conditions. I wish the toilets were cleaned and washed more often. Very dirty. Also, the hospital has lack of the good management compared to VGH and Children's & women's hospital. In ER they can forget about you, although there are several patients in the department, and you sit waiting for several hours. Although, in general, the doctors and nurses in the ER are good and try to help you. The feeling that there is no organization of departments in general. It all depends on the shift. I would say a lot of organizational disorder in general. Hence the problems often. I would recommend the experience of women's hospitals - there is organization and order as in the army.

I went to RCH with an infection that was eating my heart valve. As with most everything else today, too many patients too few staff but let me tell you that the treatment I got there was first class and I could not have asked for more. Sure there were a few issues but that is part of life but I would not be here today except for the people in the cardiac ward.

Unprofessional front-desk staff in the ER. way too much attitude to people who are in distress and in need of immediate medical attention. ER Doctor bluntly made fun of me for being there and asked "you couldn't wait until Monday?" Well no! That's why I'm here now because I'm in pain! Ugh! And do your job and help me instead of criticizing me because you're near the end of your shift and too tired to treat me. Gave me a medication to take that would impair my judgement to drive, but only asked me after I took the med if "by the way" I was driving?! I had to call someone in the middle of the night to drive me and my car back. Ridiculous. Front-desk staff clearly hate their jobs, no eye contact with patients, rude and condescending tone, and quite impatient.

The staff are overworked. They do care but are spread too thin with relatively new doctors and interns performing care/triage. With the influx of 'Boomers' coming in for treatment, all the doctors and nursing staff are well overworked and stressed out. I sometimes get frustrated in having to wait so long for care but that, really, is not the fault of the hospital or its staff. These guys are kinda awesome for what they put themselves through on a daily basis. So...Respect!

I was stabbed 6 times, oncein the back, three times in the leg, once in the arm, and once in the lung (both collapsed). Without the outstanding work of the doctors and nurses of the trauma unit, I would not be here today. I owe them my life, I will be forever grateful.

This is an amazing hospital! I recently gave birth there and though it didn't go so smoothly, I had a great experience. The nurses at the maternity unit were all so nice, helpful and patient. I was treated with so much kindness and when things got complicated and the doctors had to perform an emergency c-section, they did it so quickly and professionally and saved my baby's life. I'm so grateful. I felt like everyone there really care. Thank you so much!!!

They are running a scam. I went in to emergency with pain, I've an established history of kidney stones, the doctor told me she didn't want to order ultrasound because of insurance companies, she did finally when she couldn't explain my pain and the written report is so vague that it raised a red alert with other doctors that I've seen in US and India. She(a Dr. Miller) discharged me saying it COULD be stones they are not seeing in the ultrasound. This is a scam establishment. I spent 8 hours in emergency with only a urine and blood test, and what looks like a scam-ultrasound.

Bella C

Ive been to this hospital multiple times in the past years, While my at emergency dept varies, Ive had nothing but good experience with the imaging department, especially the MRI dept, the MRI techs were angels and made the whole experience stress free.

THE WORST, most unorganized hospital I’ve ever been to. They treated kidney failure like garbage. Extremely unprofessional group of doctors. Screwed up twice, and put unnecessary tubes into neck and chest, they realized this a after and just took it all back out the next hour. The pain they put us through was unbelievable. None of them put themselves in your position. They’re all careless, stupid and do not deserve the title of a doctor. DONT GO HERE!!

Horrible place! My husband went in with blunt force trauma to his head...they didn’t do any checkup. Asked him to wait 4 hours... I went to ask for an ice pack and nurse refused saying she’s too busy. I had to ask 6 people before one of them gave me an ice pack. We left after 2 hours of waiting as pain was unbearable. Went to surrey memorial where we were fast tracked as it was head injury, got seen by a nurse, given painkiller, ice pack, c t scan and results all within 2 hours! So glad that we didn’t wait around at royal columbian. I understand it’s a hard profession but if you can’t have empathy for people and can’t be bothered to act like a human, then you shouldn’t be in it.

David J

Horrible, nosy nurses and lactation consultants. Don't go to deliver here. All they do is push for induction but don't tell you the hell that awaits afterward.

Two out of the three ERP I saw were very daring to do bad stuff to patients and not bothered with complaints to the College of Physicians. I went to the ER for a referral to a specialist doctor. I lined up for 3 times just to get a proper referral. The first ER doctor was a very tall medium aged man, he even didn’t write me a referral as he promised... Then I went there for the 2nd time and the ER doctor with egg head yelled at me a sick patient, and I still didn’t get my referral. Then I went there for the third time, and I finally met a very nice ER doctor, a tall Asian female doctor, Dr. Yong, she was intelligent and kind, and I finally got my referral. God bless you, Dr. Yong. The 5 star was just for Dr. Yong.

I went to the emergency here. I have had bloody diarrhea and stomach pain for 12 hours. I was suffering from severe abdominal pain and waiting for 3 hours. Dr. Lyan accused me and pushed me to take Covid-19 vaccine. I told him that “I will think about it but I need some treatment now”. He just said to me that I could take Tylenol or Advil and shortly he left. He was in the treatment room for only a few minutes. I went to hallway and asked him what was his diagnoses. He said that I probably have Norovirus. I researched Norovirus on the website and different doctors said it doesn’t give us bloody stool. I couldn’t even take a stool exam so how could he diagnose me I had Norovirus? I called 811 and the nurse said that what the doctor did to me was wrong and I have to go to another emergency immediately. I was shocked I was neglected by a emergency doctor because of my vaccine status.

Absolutely disappointed. I went to emergency and started to tell one of the nurses as they called me. I said I have been vomiting every day and suffering from headache and tried to continue to tell them about my symptoms however the nurse (big, chubby, bearded persian nurse who called himself Gary) interrupted me then and told me to go home because I look healthy. Tried couple more times to continue but he rejected me from saying and carried on sarcastically. I cannot believe they get paid for this kind of service. Especially this guy (I asked for his last name and of course he refused to give me his name) that I do not even trust that he gave me his real first name said he has been working at the hospital for 12years. I am sure no one at this hospital cares how their staffs are treating people who really need help.

I went in with severe abdominal pain , they sent me to waiting area .I said I should have called an ambulance and was told I would still have to wait. 4am almost empty still waited an hour . I asked for pain relief and was told they can't just give pain killers. Never did any test except blood. Nurse gave me a shot and said rudely "this is not a narcotic" treated me like I was a drug addict. I am almost 60 And never did drugs in my life except a little pot as a teen. .send me home in just as much pain. I went to my doctor next day he gave me morphine which does not always take the pain away, sent me for CT scan waiting results .If I have something serous I will sue them for neglect

I would like to point out to all the people who are leaving bad reviews. Hospitals are for seriously ill people. Not your everyday bump and bruise. Some of the people seem to think that the staff at the hospitals are there just to serve them. If the doctor seems rude to you because you couldn't "WAIT" until Monday to go to the clinic. Then maybe you need to give your head a shake. Because UNLESS you are in some critical state where your Life is in jepordy. AS IN "YOU ARE GOING TO DIE" YOU AND EVERYONE like you are a serious drain on our critcal resources. Hospitals are not there for you to use as your own personal drop in clinic. Our system is a mess yes. But it is the people doing things like this that are the problem. NOT the attitude of the hospital staff.

vanessa nichols

I had the most terrible experience here at RCH. Words cannot describe how I feel and how shocked I am by the way the whole hospital is being managed. When I first arrived in ER they took me in right away as I told the check in nurse that I was experiencing stroke symptoms which I experienced from another stroke I had in 2019. The CT scan took hours to get done. During the wait I had seen how rude the ER nurses are to a lot of the sick patients which was really disturbing and not acceptable coming from a health care worker. After getting a CT scan waited hours to get the results to be told that I had another stroke (hemorrhage). The ER doctor was very compassionate and the best staff member there in my opinion. I was told I was going to have to stay in the hospital for 5 days for monitoring etc. to ensure the stroke does not get worse. I was waiting for a room in ER sitting on a reclining chair for 20 hours. It was so uncomfortable, irritating as the privacy curtains I had around my chair were constantly being opened and left opened by nurses so I had to get up to close them each time as there were other people sitting right infront of me in chairs staring at me as I was laying down. After complaining about being in that chair for 20 hours they decided to put me on a stretcher and bring me to North 6. I was relieved that I was finally being transferred to a room. Upon arrival the nurse shoved me to the side of the hallway and said when a room becomes available they will bring you in. I arrived around 530PM and did not get any monitoring, acknowledgement of me being there until 8PM when my boyfriend finally complained to the head nurse that no one has attended to me yet. They apologized and said they had no idea I was dropped off there. Poor communication between staff? How can they not know I am there. I was told nurse Christine was going to attend to me in about 15 mins after they received the complaint but turns out we didn't get anyone until 1 hour later and it was not nurse Christine. When I FINALLY got a nurse to check my vitals and everything she did not attend to me much after that, didn't ask if I needed anything and could care less I was under her care. I was getting anxiety being in the hallway for hours, all the staff and patients staring at me, no privacy, no care and not feeling well from the stroke. I had a second CT scan done to see if the bleeding had progressed but I did not receive the results for 24hrs after complaining numerous times that a doctor did not come to discuss the results. I felt they did not care I just had a stroke and that it could have been progressing without them knowing at first. I had asked to leave to go to another hospital as I felt they were too busy and had no time to care for me. They refused and said to stay here and tried to attend to my needs for awhile but still failed. I had never experienced a hospital with such uncompassionate, rude and careless health workers in my life. I had been at VGH for my first stroke in 2019 and it was by far the most amazing experience with staff. I will never return to Royal Columbian Hospital and I recommend no one goes there unless they have to.

N Xmilar

Went to emergency with depression and anxiety. They let me talk with a psychiatrist who refered me to a clinic and get one on one treatment from a another psychiatrist. That was a pure lie because the clinic they referred me to will not offer that to me. No follow up call either. I'm now sitting here no better than I was when I visited the hospital. The hospital visit literally did nothing and the referral to talk with a psychiatric clinic never materialised. I guess next time I should just off myself because I know for a fact this hospital will not help if your suicidal. The royal Colombian does not take mental health seriously. Noting but false promises of treatment and then extreme depression and suicidal thoughts when it never happens.

Shoshanna Byrd

Worst hospital ever, bunch of quacks Always misdiagnosing people, rude and unfriendly staff. Stay far away

I went to the RCH admitting the other day because I was scheduled for heart categorization, the admitting clerk asked me all the usual questions: age, phone number address etc so I added my blood type as a little joke. She said: "I don't think that's funny". I'm suggesting she brush up on her peoples skills or go find another job, being admitted to the hospital has enough stress without facing a "deadpan, humourless" admitting clerk!

My wife and I had a baby october 4th, 2021. The nurses on the maternity on 2nd floor were great, the OB was great. We had some complications, my wife spent almost 18 hours in labour. That said, after the c-section, they brought us to the maternity section on the 3rd floor which we spent 2 days and a half so my wife could recover from the surgery. We are 1st time parents. On the 3rd floor, they gave us a bunch of papers teaching us how to take care of a new born. So far so good. After awhile, 80% of the nurses started getting super impatient to us, like not wanting to talk to us or visit our room. In a period of almost 3 days, I noticed just 2 nurses were super sweet to us, specially nurse Harpreet, what a sweet woman. However, 85% of the nurses were super rude, one of them even told to read the papers so I could learn how to deal with my 1st new born. It was really offending. So, to sum up, they give you a bunch of paper to read and learn how to take care of a new born, after almost 18 hours, restless, confused etc, they thought we should read it all and learn right away lol. After we left the hospital, and I had change to refresh my mind, I found this issue a little offending, because, after all we are paying them to help us on this first 2 days.

Jan — broken finger. first day doc told me that it wasn’t broken. told me to keep moving it . so I went home and kept moving my broken finger. next day got a call from hospital, said that finger is actually broken (no kidding it was purple) . waited another 4 hours to get in and get a splint . people can make mistakes. okay. this week — needed to get a part of my body checked . waited for nearly 4+ hours. doctor isn’t here. kept asking nurse and reception when the doctor would come. they said “soon” but apparently “soon” is never. ive seen doctors examine at least 5 patients that came after me and they haven’t come to check up on me since. hospital is extremely understaffed.

Many of the staff lack professionalism, compassion and empathy, especially when it comes to the care of elderly patients. I find these nurses extremely rude. I have had more bad experiences than good ones over the years from misdiagnosis in the ER to nurses’ negligence. Other than the fantastic staff in their renal ward and a handful of caring nurses, (the star is for them), I have nothing good to say about RCH and their management.

I actually would put NO star at all. Went to emergency because my baby needs to be checked asap. Waited for an hour just to get to triage 1. Then another hour to triage 2. After that we have not heard my daughter's name or whatsover for 1.5hr. So I had to speak to one of the nurses and she said they're short staff and she said we will ve seen shortly. It took another 1.5hr to call us again and finally admitted in. Thought long wait was over but inside is another 2 hrs wait. It's ridiculously insane. I usually go to burnaby hosp where she was born. I just thought rch is closer. But never gunna come back. It's insane to make emergency patients wait for that long..

The registration attendant asked me to tell the reason why I badly need a doctor. Then I spoke about my complaints, that time I was seriously ill. I was surprised when she told me that I could only complain for one. Is that a protocol in the registration, one sickness at a time?

I was very sick and weak when I arrived at about 8:30AM for a kidney biopsy. I was taken into surgery around 9:30. Relative to the painless biopsy I had experienced overseas years before, this one was extremely painful. The radiologist seemed to be hitting a nerve each time he went in for his three samples. The entire procedure and subsequent care were primitive, not to say barbaric. Unlike the first time, I hemorrhaged all day. The worst of it was bashing from this one brutal nurse on the afternoon shift. Ignorant of my condition, (AL Amyloidosis with cardiac involvement) she forced me to walk to the bathroom located at the other end of the ward while shouting at me to hurry up and move, abused me for having blood in my urine and told me there was nothing wrong with me. They called my driver telling him to come and get me though the radiologist had not yet discharged me. I later filed a written complaint to the hospital. I even recorded the details of the abuse in my eBook "Beating Back AL Amyloidosis" and yet the hospital has taken no action to stop this nurse from bashing older and seriously sick women as she did me. Royal Columbian appeared to foster elder abuse. Authorities know it and cover it over. I apprised the Vancouver news media and they contributed to the cover up, refusing to hear me out.

Nice staff, more organised than other hospitals. As in most hospitals parking is horrible, if you can avoid the emerge parking, do so. Spaces barely fit a compact car!

ER Facilities are a lot older and need to be updated compared to Surrey Memorial Hospital ER. I agree with the other reviewers, they are disorganized and lack communication between nurses, doctors and triage. The patient before me even had their chart lost, the nurse was walking around trying to find it. I walked out missing a test that the nurse recommended and the doctor didn't know about. When I mentioned it, he said "nope you are all done." When it was time to see my report at my family doctors, they sent the wrong one. They were suppose to send my Thyroid results, and they sent something totally different. They ended up not sending anything even after my family doctor requested it. However, I did feel the wait time was decent for a busy hospital. I went in at the middle of the night and I was done and out within 2-3 hours (including two blood tests and ECG). 3 stars because I did not die and thats the main point of an ER.

Got processed pretty quickly, within 1 hour I was on a bed getting my IV medication and seeing a doctor. Guess Im lucky because its not a busy day. Not experiencing anything that anyone mentioned in these reviews. I guess all Hospitals have their dog days...I just gotta decide which days to go . If you see its too busy just go somewhere else...or you gonna get frustrated with long waits and overworked employees.

Worse place to give a birth, I do have to give credit to the baby delivery team, however after the birth care is terrible. They do the same checks on the baby for 3 times, leaving the baby crying and leaving simply because no report is being made. Every nurse there work by thier own, without any supervision. I called for Tylonol pills for pain relief and I never got them. Every single nurse asks the same questions all over again. Lots of nurses, but absuloutly zero management. So if you need quality and hassle free baby delivery service avoid Royal Columbia Hospital at all costs!

Disclaimer: This was written by my partner and also ⚠️ self harm trigger warning ⚠️ I have been back 3 times this week for a SEVERE migraine that is not going away. I have expressed that my pain has been 7-10/10, yet they have stated on my discharge papers that my pain was moderate and treated me like my concerns are not valid. I was told multiple times to take a couple days off work and "sleep it off". It must be a real privilege to have the mentality that I can afford to take more that this week off work, and sleep off severe pain that won't even allow me to get a full night's sleep in the first place. The doctors are not taking me seriously. The last time this happened to me I had meningitis. I doubt what I have now is of the same severity, but it would be nice to be taken seriously and actually have some investigation done into this pain I have had FOR AN ENTIRE WEEK, rather than just being pumped full of medications that have proven time and time again not to be affective and sent home to get rest. I have been unable to work or function all week, how on earth is that MODERATE?? I self harmed this week to help with my pain and anxiety surrounding this issue, and apparently that isn't even enough to prove that I NEED HELP. The doctors at royal Columbian need to do better. This is absolutely unacceptable

Not impressed at all. VERY long wait times for emergency. you should expect minimum of 3-4 hours of waiting before seeing a doctor if not longer. is this how tax payers get thier treatment??

gave birth here and also visited their ER twice in the last 12 months. Each visit we were treated with respect and we found the nurses were extremely helpful and friendly.

Fast referral for a torn meniscus wreaking havoc

The surgical nurses/ staff were very good to my fiance

Wort experience ever, after two days of waiting in the “Emergency” each day 10-12 hours still students are doing the examination and no result for a simple medical issue, taking 4 times blood samples 2 times sonography and their reply is we don’t know whats going on

Melanie Gilbert

The only thing that was good about our experience was that that the nursing staff were very good. The wait time to get in and out was horrible and the doctors never answered our questions well. Very frustrating.

I do not recommend this hospital. My friend went to the ER, and they sent her home after all the test. She came to ER again next day, and she had to do all the test again because hospital cannot access her medical record. She stayed hospital 4 days since, and I do not remember how many times we explained all the doctors and nurses same thing.

My wife just gave birth there 4 weeks ago. Nurses were very caring and friendly. The delivery room was huge and they got hand sanitizer everywhere. I could stay with my wife overnight until she was discharged. Our experience was above and beyond our expectation. Thanks RCH Maternity Team.

A waste of time. They make you feel like a burden. At the end of the visit I was told "We don't give narcotics here" Did I ask for any?? LOL Extremely insulting. If I was a druggie it would have showed up in my blood work. I felt humiliated and violated here. Go to VGH anywhere but here.

It might take a while in the E R . All the other services provided useully fast and friendly which is nice.

Came to this hospital from Surrey after having been discharged from Surrey Memorial. I was in agony and barely able to drive my car there safely before collapsing from pain in the underground parking. I had been back and forth to Surrey Memorial on numerous occasions over a period of about 4 months, finally receiving an incorrect diagnosis which of course did not as it could not respond to treatment. I cannot say enough good things about the treatment I received from the get go at Royal Columbian. The admitting physician Dr. Ipp, exuded compassion, concern and understanding and as it stands so did all the front line staff, as I was to find out. Upon being admitted I was immediately supplied with pain management followed up by an ultrasound, X-rays and a CT scan, blood work and so forth. Within 4 hours they already had a better idea about my health issues than Surrey Memorial had been able to achieve in 4 months. The 5 days I spent there were extremely reassuring and comforting and even the food was good. I simply cannot say enough good things about RCH and it's wonderful staff and fantastic level of care that they provide. All my necessary follow up appointments with specialists have been set up and are happening very quickly. Thank you to all the staff at RCH, from the bottom of my heart. You are now my go to hospital should I require further care or treatment down the road.

Waiting time in the emergency unit is more than 6 hours. Poor and low quality service. You can't use people as a lab rat to try new things with nurses newly graduated. I would go to another hospital even If it is further.

Super busy and huge hospital ???? staff are nice and helpful, construction activities make some movement slow.
