Cutting Room Creative is by far the island's best salon. I recently saw Karly at Cutting Room Creative after my hair was botched by an upscale Vancouver salon. I have to say Karly gave me the best colour job of my life. I appreciate the time she spent with me discussing my hair goals and executing them better than I had even anticipated! Note: This review is from my visit in February 2017. I wanted a complicated dye job, and had seen some great portfolios from this salon. The colourist, Sarah, did an awesome job making it look close to what I wanted. However, I requested in my consultation that the colour be done with Elumen, as I have used that before and the bright colours lasted nearly a year. Though they assured me they would use Elumen, they clearly didn't as the colour faded within a couple days despite them saying in the consultation that my hair was perfectly healthy. They re-did it, again assuring me it would be done with Elumen, but again it faded within a few days. They completely wrecked my hair and I ended up having to chop it all off, and they didn't offer any refund.

It's a little unusual to give a 5-star rating to a salon where you haven't actually had a hair service yet. But the reason I'm doing it is because I had an unexpected customer service experience that was so good I had to share it! I walked in with questions about potentially purchasing a product for my hair. Not only did I get answers, I had somebody sit down with me, go through the problem, demo the product on my hair and then take me to her chair for a touch-up and give me great styling tips. No BS marketing, no pressure to buy anything, just genuine great service enthusiasm from someone who loves what she does for a living and wants to help. Now that ladies and gentlemen is how you get a new client! Thank you to Karly, I think I'll be seeing you in the future :-)

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to wear my hair up for a couple months as it is embarrassing to show anyone right now. I thought the haircut was going well - I came in with the intention of cleaning my hair up and taking a bit of length off. I had longer guy's curly hair. Halfway through it still looked alright. But near the end I started to get mortified as I looked in the mirror - I ended up with a style that is much shorter than what I wanted and gives off the completely wrong vibe - opposite to what I had before which was more rugged and natural. After talking to multiple people they agree it does not look good and I should wear it up. Extremely discouraged.

The Cutting Room has a bright and super comfortable interior at their new location. The owners have adopted very safe and professional Covid protocols which gives a new customer a very good first impression and speaks highly of their priority for safety. My hair cutting and styling appointment a few weeks ago was with Candice and it was my first experience with her. She listened very carefully while I described my wishes and showed her some photos of my preferences for casual, yet stylish beach waves for my medium length hair. The end result was exactly as I had hoped for. It is so rare for me to leave a salon and have just the photo ready style I wanted...in fact I have never before felt so happy with the result. I am so very impressed by the staff and LOVE my haircut and colour. Karly was professional, personable, friendly and an amazing colourist. She explained everything to me and her insight was above the rest! Michael was no different than Karly and I now have the most flattering style I have ever had! I took a last minute cut with Amanda & I loved her! She had a great bedside manner and walked me through everything she was doing. I hadn’t been in a salon in over 15 years because of terrible past experiences, but she completely eased my mind. She used a fantastically scented shampoo and conditioner for me and made sure I was comfortable every step of the way. I've been going to the Cutting Room for years--over a decade now--and I wouldn't dream of going anywhere else. Edwin always makes me feel like a valued customer and we have a lot of fun chatting during my appointment. He even cuts my three-year old daughter's hair ( she loves him!) I wouldn't let anyone else touch her hair :) I've just started getting Keratin treatments--applied by the fabulous Fiona--and OMG I am insanely in love with this product. I used to have frizzy curly hair and I was so frustrated most mornings I would just wear a hat. Now I have sleek smooth hair that is so easy to style. I'd recommend this salon in a heart beat. I've always had great service, and the staff is very professional and friendly. The salon itself is very modern with a contemporary decor and it's got a great vibe. I've spent quite a few relaxing Friday nights at the salon getting my hair done!

I would give a million stars if I could!!! The Cutting Room Creative is hands down one of the best salons in North America. Edwin Johnston is the only hair stylist that has cut my hair where strangers seriously stop me on the street to either say how much they love my hair or ask me who my stylist is. I drive 3 hours in total there and back to get to the salon and it's worth every second. Edwin has won best hairstylist in Canada and North America. He is a HAIR ICON :) :) if you google his name you will see why. His wife Fiona is a super talented colourist and has won many awards as well. They both teach all their stylists once a week the latest styles and techniques so that all their staff are on the cutting edge of fashion. Stacey and Karly have also coloured my hair and honestly I love all of them and can't decide who my favourite is because they are all really good. When I haven't been able to get in with Edwin or Fiona I have been just as happy with all of their other stylists because I know that they have all been taught by the best. Education is number one at this salon. The staff that work there are extremely dedicated. They also have all the latest straightening/ smoothing treatments and colour products that are the healthiest for your hair. I love straightening and colouring my hair like the rest of them and I don't have to worry about the health of it with the products that the Cutting Room Creative uses. NANAIMO you are so lucky!!!!! Open another location in Victoria and Vancouver pls!!! PS shout out to Ally the receptionist. I must say she is so kind and nice on the phone and in person. She always makes me feel so welcome when I walk in the door.

I went to the Cutting Room Creative without knowing what I was getting into - I hadn't read any reviews or done any prior research; I came with a dramatic change in what I wanted for my hair cut and colour and have definitely had my fair share of underwhelming and overpriced cuts. The Cutting Room is anything but. I am completely in LOVE with my cut (short bob with short fringe done by Edwin); his skill, precision and experience are what you expect but don't always get from a master stylist; literally the best cut I've had in over a decade. Overall, I felt comfortable from beginning to end; all of the staff and both owners are super friendly, professional and attentive. I went back for colour the next day (from brown & grown out dirty blonde to platinum blonde), done by Evalina, and she got the colour EXACTLY how I wanted it - not too warm/yellow and not too cool/silver; I appreciated that she was extremely precise and communicated every step to deliver exactly what I wanted. She's your girl if you want the BEST colour. They charged a fair price for how much work went into my new do and I felt like I got a steal of a deal compared to some other salons. Really good value overall. Also, for those concerned, their covid protocol is as follows: you sanitize your phone, if you're going to use it during your apt, when you check in; proceed to wash your hands (I appreciated not sanitizing), every chair is covered with single use covers & everyone is masked; the entire salon, bathrooms included, is spotless. I highly, highly recommend the Cutting Room. Would give it an extra star if I could.

I had Candice style my hair for my wedding in May and she went above and beyond. I did not know exactly what I wanted, but gave her a few pictures of the things I liked. She was so patient with me but she made sure my hair was able to be styled the way it was in the pictures. Not only was it beautiful, but it held up the entire night in the heat. It looked just as good at midnight as it did the minute she finished styling it. I would 100% recommend Candice for any future weddings or prom as she is not only fun and patient, but she puts out beautiful high quality work! I was so happy with what she accomplished.

I have to say I had a fabulous haircut and colour at this salon on Saturday. It was my second visit, first for a colour. The haircut was just a tidy up, but the hair colour was a big change and today at work all my coworkers commented on it. Everybody loves it. I am however taking a star of for one reason. It was a very busy salon, which made it a little loud. Some might enjoy the busy sensation, but I do like it a little quieter. When I brought this to the attention of the owner, I was told, Thursday to Saturdays are very busy days, and to come in on Tuesday's or Wednesday's when it's less busy. Good to know, because I'll definitely be back.

Th owners Edwin & Fiona are both National Compition winers many times over and it shows in there every day cut & colour. From the moment you open the door it`s all about you starting with your consultation before your shampoo.Here they have specialists in colour which is done on a separate floor,if I have sun damageStacey will alter my colour to make it as natural as she can get it,and other times it`s just the roots" touch up". I have never seen or heard of anyone not leaving happy and I have been with the family getting my hair cut & coloured for over 30+ years. As good as a salon can get. Beautiful facility, great staff, and, most importantly, world-class hair styling (but still reasonably priced). The only place my wife and I will go to in Nanaimo.

I have not been to a GOOD salon for a very long time, let alone seen an EXCELLENT stylist and colourist! I moved from the city to the country and hair upkeep has been low on my list. After several poor cuts, I gave up and just decided I would get it cut short 2-3x a year and then let it grow, it grows fast! Due to my ignoring my hair for the past 5 years, it was "virginal" again and had no colour treatments, so Karly had a great canvas to start with! When I knew that I would be flying across the country over 5600km I booked an appointment with Karly Menzies of the Cutting Room Creative and left my hair alone long after it should have been cut. Karly was amazing! She knew I needed something that was easy to take care of, something that would make me feel vibrant again and that I was pretty open to whatever she wanted to do. My only stipulations were, some sort of blonde, no buzz cut and short and easy. WOW! She blew me away! She was so careful, knowledgeable and professional with her treatment. At the end, after hours in the chair, lots of foils, a variety of colours, blow dryers and straighteners, my hair felt and LOOKED wonderful! I would highly recommend Karly, in fact I handed her cards out all over town while I was in Nanaimo, BC! She did wonders with my hair, created a style that made me look and feel good, left my hair feeling healthy and truly exceeded my expectations! I have only one problem with Karly... I have NO idea when I will be on the west coast again and able to go see her! If you are looking for a salon where the owners care about their staff, where the staff excel at what they do and where you can relax, you will definitely find it at The Cutting Room Creative, Nanaimo! Sooo... I hate doing this. But I just moved to Nanaimo and take pride in my hair most of the time. I let it grow out for about 4 months while living here to shop around for a new stylist. I read the reviews on here and decided to try it out. When I called I asked for an experienced stylist. At least 5-7 years, and someone who specialized in men’s hair. I also expressed my hair was on the long side and I was going to be cutting it very short so I would need at least an hour to an hour an a half. I was recommended to Kristen. She was alright. She didn’t manager her time well, let me sit in her chair for 10 min while speaking to her next client, didn’t recommend a shampoo like I asked her, didn’t style my hair because she ran out of time. I walked out of the salon with my hat on. And will need to book another appointment else where to get it fixed. I unfortunately wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone.

My 5 year old son loves getting his hair cut by Olivia at the Cutting Room! She is fantastic with him and does great work. He usually hates getting his hair cut...until we found Olivia at the Cutting Room. She always delivers a great cut and always better than we hoped for. She is friendly and has a great way with my little guy. He is so relaxed here and is guaranteed to fall asleep. He really loves the massage while his hairs washed and the hot chocolate. So glad we finally found a place my son enjoys going to!!
