After much apprehension and thought about where to get my first haircut in Calgary, I went to Etch Hair and I booked with the new stylist Shiori. Shiroi understood my request for a totally different look. I had long hair past my shoulders but wanted a bob cut. Shiroi took the time to ensure my layers were done nicely. She also got me to check and asked if I was happy with it and if any adjustments I felt had to be made. She took the allocated time booked, nothing more and nothing less. I saw Shiroi's work on a bloke who had booked before me, and she did a great job on that man's hair. So I would highly recommend trying Shiroi, especially for people who struggle with having a lot of hair (too much volume). Thank you Shiroi for the great job. I was in a hurry today, so I had to leave right away. Cheers!

Do not go here! This place needs a Tabitha takeover. I decided to give it a try because of the good Google reviews and because it's in my neighbourhood. I called ahead to ask for someone who knows how to work with long, thick hair. I ended up with a novice stylist who was not as fluent in English as one would hope, so it was extremely difficult to communicate what I wanted. While paying, I mentioned I thought the price was a little high for the lack of service I received, and the desk staff pretty much laughed it off. On top of that, the rest of the staff were unprofessional. Eating in the client waiting area, eating at their stations, and completely unprofessional attire. Lots of personal gossip that customers probably don't want to hear about. Very unprofessional salon. Never going there again.

I went here a few weeks ago on recommendation from my cousin, and I left with a fairly good experience. I went for a balayage and a cut with Zxyro, and he was very accommodating to what I wanted to do. He made sure to ask questions, and even thought of how my upcoming cruise would affect my hair color and brought it to my attention. Through the process of coloring my hair, I noticed he was very patient and detailed. I never felt like he rushed through things, even when the color and cut went a little past closing time. I am very happy with the coloring of my hair, however, the haircut portion was why I didn't give this review a full five stars. I felt like Zxyro wasn't really able to cut my bangs properly. I mentioned that I had wanted to try bangs again, but I was a little hesitant since my hair is heavy and I usually end up clipping them up since I don't use products to hold my hair. He tried to reassure me that he can cut it so that it would be lighter so I could sweep to the side. My bangs still ended up being too heavy and in the end he had use some product to hold it into place. I am overall very satisfied and happy with my experience. I definitely would go back to Zxyro again for the next time I go to color my hair. Maybe just another person to cut my hair.

They are the best, hands down! I've been living in Toronto for couple of years now, and would not let anyone else touch my hair but them! Recently I went for a dramatic look - from mermaid-long hair to an over the shoulder bob, and Kiyoshi performed magic! It looks so beautiful, I love it!

Japanese hair straightening here was great. I was quoted over $1000 at Red Bloom, but it was $300 and 3 hours at Etch and the service was super professional and friendly. 10/10, would recommend :)

Based on experience, this is the best salon and I think it'll be the only salon I go to now. The hairdressers are all very skilled at what they do and they're all friendly. If you are learning Japanese, it might even be a great learning opportunity for you since most hairdressers are Japanese. But don't worry, they all speak English. The chemicals they use to bleach and dye your hair aren't too harsh which means that your hair will feel as soft as virgin hair (provided you take good care of it afterwards as well). In addition, their bleach was very good at lifting my natural hair color since it was black. If you are getting a bleach and dye though, I would recommend Zxyro as he is the colour guy and in my opinion, the best at it.

Hairstylists here are very skilled - both Japanese and non-Japanese hairstylists. I always come out with hairstyle better than what I hoped for. Brooke is especially talented. Yes, it is a bit pricy as others are saying, but you get what you paid for, or more, in my opinion and experience with Etch.

The stylist was professional and sincere. The scalp treatment add-on (additional service) was the best, especially the scalp massage. Always feeling refreshed after the service. Most of the time the appointment was on time so no need to wait while paid for parking. The environment was comfortable and individual stains are physically distant. I'm really picky with hairstylists because my hair is naturally curly and I've gotten a lot of bad haircuts, but everyone there does a wonderful job. I went in today for my first time and scheduled a cut with Melissa. She's amazing! Friendly, honest, and she gave me a really cute cut. I am really happy with the way my hair turned out and she took special care when drying and straightening my hair for me. Definitely recommend this place as well as any of the stylists. They are all professional and amazing people. Thanks again to Melissa! I'll definitely be back again.

The Etch store was quite well maintained and clean. I liked their furniture and the staff were friendly. They were able to straighten my hair well and tried to cut the awkward hairstyle that I had before. Why am I giving them 1 star, you may ask? For starters, I wanted two things done with my hair: straightened and ombre. They did alright with straightening my hair and I was willing to pay $350, even though I could've gotten straightening from another hair salon for lesser price. In any case, I asked the hairstylist if they could do ombre for me with the specific colour and style that I had. The hairstylist said that it would take extra hours but it's doable. I told them exactly what kind of ombre I wanted and showed them a few pictures from my phone. At first, they were hesitant in doing both straightening and ombre but half way through the hair straightening process, they said that they were able to do it and so I accepted. When the ombre was done, I was sort of taken aback by surprise. Despite the hairstylist applying the dye, nothing changed! The colour of my hair remained the same for the most part. Noticing my apparent silence, the hairstylist immediately reassured me that the colour will be visible once I step outside of the store and into the light. I paid nearly $600 (cost and tips altogether) for the straightening and "ombre," though there was no ombre done. Much later, I learned that when doing ombre hair, you need to use bleach, something that I did not see happening when the dye was applied to my hair. Like I said before, the salon is very pretty and the staff are friendly. If my hair was done correctly, or if they had told me that ombre needs more time and could be done another day, then I would have understood. For the price that I paid, if my hair turned out the way at least somewhat the way I showed them in the picture, then I would have come back. Many months passed by, and I am quite hesitant to go back to Etch. All in all, I will most likely not come back to Etch at all due to poor communication and the "ombre" hairstyle that I ended up getting.

Only the owner do listen to and cut according to how you want them to cut and style. No other stylist at this place can deliver as good as the owner. I'm a little biased here but I personally believe there is a higher chance that your hair will turn out great if you choose male hair stylist, of course I've tried male stylist in the past at other places and cut horrible hair. just the higher probability than female hair stylist. I would highly recommend Etch over the other Asian hair salons e.g X-treme Hair Salon (Harvest Hills Blvd NE), Shear Synergy Salon (Chinatown) and to name a few. What's wrong with these two salons ? most notably, their customer service skill is very poor, can not believe how arrogant they can be towards a customer. I would stay away from those places.

This is the worst salon I've ever been to. Just overprice, too pricey while the service is just shortcuts. Their hair straightening permanent is indeed shortcuts, don't believe them it's permanent hair straightening. I have been receiving hair straightening permanent/rebonding since 2006, I get it yearly. This salon imposed that I do the roots only. (My hair is healthy, a little dry on the ends but that's it) I said I want my entire hair, I have been Having it done yearly. The lady agreed but she said she will do root first to shoulder length then after 10 minutes she would apply the chemical to my entire hair. but What she wanted it what happened. She applied it on the roots up to shoulder length only. and to my surprise she applied the chemical on WET Hair. This is my first time that chemical was applied while hair is wet. (Supposedly after shampoo they blow dry hair, after that they apply the chemical) but they applied it while hair is wet. after 10 minutes, she washed my hair and blew it dry, then she straightened my hair like- She's not being thorough, she ironed it so fast with so many hair strands. (Supposedly she should iron it with fewer hair strands with many strokes- to straighten it)I told the stylist my hair close to my ears are little curly- she said -not finish- (she doesn't understand me. She doesn't speak English well. But still I let her do my hair. She cut my hair and I know she's brand new hair stylist- she doesn't know what she's doing, even in cutting my hair. I corrected her many times with the layers. I'm somehow irritated and disappointed at that time. After cutting my hair, she should iron it again. But of course this salon do short cuts - she didn't iron it the second time. She blew dry my hair then --done. But my frustration didn't There. to my surprise, she charged me $325 even without applying chemical to my entire hair. That was my original online quotation to me- $310 (hair straightening permanent plus cut) for my entire hair. So I asked another person, why I'm being charged that amount, they only applied the chemical up to shoulder length and why my hair is not fully straightened/rebonded. The guy said, straightening roots is already $250 and too much straight hair is old fashioned.. you know hair straightening originally came from Japan, (showing that they know what they're doing) but since too much straight hair is not the fashion anymore, we made it not too straight. MY GOODNESS MY HAIR IS ORIGINALLY NOT CURLY, it's really straight, only a little bit bouncy but it's really straight. . I just want it perfectly straight. THEY SHOULD HAVE TOLD ME in the start, they will not really straighten it- so I would know, So I would not need to pay $345 plus just to get disappointment. I said here in Calgary I've been receiving hair straightening, it's almost the same price- but that's the entire hair- very thorough and they spent at least 5hours or more in my hair. I guess the staff of this salon dont know that this hair straightening permanent is getting common in Calgary. Maybe they thought I don't know the proper procedure for hair straightening. I'm willing to pay any amount as long as I get the desired outcome. the thought that they are Japanese- I trusted them, trusted their products- but i was wrong. I should have gone to salon that has been doing real hair straightening permanent to my hair yearly. I made a mistake of trusting them just because they are Japanese. Now I needed to wait another year for my full rebond. Total rip off- total shortcuts. I still gave $15 tip although I only got disappointment. My first time to write a review in my entire life. Total disappointment from this salon. My message to this salon- What we pay is not cheap so you should be doing your service well, no short cuts.

He asked a lot of questions to give me exactly what I wanted. When it wasn't quite right the first time, he went above and beyond to correct it. I needed a haircut pretty urgently on a whim yesterday. I called in on and was immediately greeted by Bernie, who scheduled me in right away. I've never been able to find a hair stylist in Calgary that quite did the job right until now. Bernie was able to replicate exactly what I told him I wanted. He was professional, confident, and put me at ease that I was in good hands. Everybody on the team was friendly, and easy to talk to. The whole experience from the initial phone call in, all the way to being handed my jacket on the way out was an experience above other salon/barber shops I've been to in the past. Although a downtown location is never the most convenient, my great experience and skill of the hair stylist will have me making the trip down next time.

However, once I stopped by Etch on a friend's recommentation, my world was changed. With hairdressers like Bernie, the professional and well-mannered attitude of the staff along with the delivery of consistently clean and crisp cuts, Etch has become my go to hair salon whenever I'm in need of anything from a quick trim to highly stylized requests. Strongly recommended.

I've been to Etch twice now and I loved both visits but Kiyoshi was my stylist for my most recent visit and I was very pleased with the results! My hair looks great, the staff at the salon are all very friendly and experienced, and they make sure you leave happy! My boyfriend also gets his hair cut by Zxyro and it always looks great. I had an excellent experience at Etch this past Saturday with Rosie; I would recommend her to anyone looking for a new hair stylist. I have been having bad experiences at hair salons for the past couple of years, so I was pleasantly surprised this time around, Rosie took great care of my hair, and it now looks way healthier than it has in a while. Additionally, I have really thin hair and I find it quite hard to style. Usually when I get my hair curled at salons it looks terrible, but she worked magic on my hair; I've never seen my hair look that nice with loose curls and she gave me some tips to try out at home to help frame my hair and add volume. Overall, the salon was clean and well kept, Rosie was very professional and kind, the price was around average (may a little bit higher) of what I normally pay; I'll definitely be heading back here again.
