I have been going to this gym for the Muay Thai lessons for some time now, and I have to say that there’s a lot of negatives and only a few positives
I’ll start with the positives. The instructor is everything when it comes to learning the martial art. The man who owns the gym, I believe his name is Eagor (not sure if I’m spelling that correctly) is an amazing instructor. His pre-training workouts, the way he explains the striking and the way he has us train the striking is phenomenal. At no point do I feel extremely burnt out or confused. Rather, I feel like I’m actually learning the techniques, am able to put power behind them and do not feel extremely exhausted to the point where I can’t continue any further. He has us do a few simple strikes, and this works out very well because he’s able to help us understand the fundamentals instead of throwing a bunch of long combos our way which only confuses us. If Eagor was the only instructor, I would rate this gym 5/5.
However, there is his younger sister, Julie, who is the instructor most of the time, and I have to give her a ⅖ stars. I’m not sure if she has a passion for instructing or if it’s nepotism at work that’s the reason she has her job, but she is not a good instructor at all. She burns you out too quickly during the pre-training workouts. Instead of how Eagor does it on a smooth sailing linear path that mixes in striking as well, all Julie does is burn you out with consistent pushups and other hard workouts that by the time comes to actually strike you’re too burnt out to do anything.
She teaches striking horribly. She has us do complicated, long combos and most of the time we’re trying to remember what the combo is instead of actually executing the combo with power and precision. She also does not teach us how to properly strike. For example, she will say: “Throw a jab and a cross” without telling us how to exactly throw a jab and a cross properly. We should be learning very simple 1-3 strike combos and keep repeating them so we can properly execute them without having to think about them too much. Sometimes she has us do 6-10 strike combos which are completely ridiculous because we spend the entire time trying to remember what to do instead of actually doing it properly.
All in all, she is not a good instructor, and I wish Eagor was at the gym full-time because I feel like I’m wasting my money with her. Also, at the end of class she will have sparring sessions for anyone who wishes to spar. However, she does not really supervise the sparring at all which is problematic because there are a lot of people that do not know how to spar and go overboard. I’ve seen people get hurt during sparring and Julie will not interject at all, nor will she offer advice to anyone sparring.
Eagor needs to swallow his pride and fire his sister and hire a real instructor for when he’s not able to make it into the gym he owns.
