If I knew how to give it a 1/2, I'd give it 3 1/2 stars.
PROS:
Excellent equipment that is well-maintained.
A lot of cardio machines so not much waiting time for those.
Indoor track
Pool
Lots of natural light
CONS:
During busy times (maybe 4-6pm?), it can be almost impossible to get a bench to use even though there are so many (see next point)
You can't always find equipment when you need it because people leave it wherever they want, and sometimes can't use equipment because someone is hogging a bench/weights/a machine while browsing through his cell phone or chatting with a friend for several minutes between sets. And even if you ask, they won't switch off with you so you can use it during their rest sets.
Not much staff around the gym. A couple stay at the desk to answer questions, but no one really roams around (except the one guy with a staff shirt who hangs with his girlfriend while she works out), reminding people to put away equipment, not hog machines or benches, etc.
The gym area itself isn't very clean since no one stops people from wearing outdoor shoes in the gym, despite rules not to, and even if staff members notice, they won't do anything about it The little cubbies are filthy from people's outdoor shoes, and have coats, duffel bags, etc. piled high upon them.
No one monitors the track, so there are always people stopped in the middle, talking to their friends and blocking traffic
No one monitors the changing rooms either, so people use the wall hooks as their permanent storage (so no one else can use the hooks), or just dump their stuff on a bench for a few hours instead of putting it in a locker. Parents will even wear their winter boots in the shower area after their kid's swimming lessons
People use cell phones in the changing room and no one cares, even though it's against the rules. I was even fortunate enough to be in the background (while wearing just a towel) of someone's selfie.
It could be a great gym and is definitely capable of being 5 stars. Unfortunately, staff doesn't care enough to make it great. Or maybe it's the supervisors who don't care, since they're the ones who should be training the staff to enforce the rules.
And you can't say this is normal for a gym. Reh-fit Centre, Rady Centre, the Y and of all places, Shapes, will have staff walking around, reminding people to put away their equipment and to follow the rules. I'm locked in for a year, but probably won't be back for another.
