The instructors take time to get to know each member and their family as well as show dedication to each members success- no matter how big or small it may be. EDIT - response to whomever responded to my review (since it is not signed). Thank you for copying what I wrote on FB when I signed my daughter to GFMA. There is a reason that I didn't take it down, basically because that is exactly what I believed at the beginning. My last review clearly states that 'it all started fabulous', thank you for confirming that. It ended up horrible, like your response. WE did not instigate anything and if you are willing to write that down, please give some examples because as far as I am concerned, that is defamation which only shows what I wrote below is true. We did move our daughter from another dojo, that is correct (probably the only thing true). Maybe you should also mention how many people have left, and just like you will get more awards, because I'm sure you will, you will also get more clients but rest assure that if you don't change the way you are handling your dojo, people will continue to leave. Take it as an advice and not a critique. Reviews are meant for people to improve their ways, not to defend themselves. Good luck to you on your future endevours as well, life has a way of giving back (good and bad). ***REVIEW It all started fabulous, we were very happy on how we were welcomed by Nathan and his mom Sophie. We liked the program so signed up. As time went by I have been extremely disappointed with GFMA. They say you must 'teach with example' karate is not just about learning to defend yourself, it's about the values and moral, the core principal of it. When I listened to Nathan talk to the kids I thought, 'this is great!' this is what they need to hear i.e. 'be careful in choosing your friends', etc little did I know.... My daughter is 12 and we decided to pull her out for several reasons, mostly because to me, the above mentioned is more important than anything, moral, values and principles. Nathan and Sophie did not deliver this, funny because at the beginning they did. As soon as there was a disagreement it stopped but not only did it stop, the example given to my child was not a great. The 'ice treatment' was applied, they 'unfollowed' her from social media, acting like children themselves and going against every single point they teach mentioned on their black belt creed. Modesty (none), Courtesy (only when when you agree with everything) Integrity definition: "the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness" (you can not have 'integrity' if you lose your temper, you teach with example, not only in karate but in life. What is being taught to other children remaining is not 'integrity') Self Control (well, apparently none as well since they stopped talking to us, all eye contact), Perseverance (I am pretty sure you do persevere as long as it's under their terms) and Indomitable spirit, my definition 'your strength comes from within', depending on your definition of strength, this is something that is lacking as well. It is pretty simple decision at the end. If you want your children to learn how to kick, sign them up but don't expect anything else, in that respect, they are pretty good and as long as you're good to them. If you want your children to learn not only karate but the principles, values, morals of a black belt, then look somewhere else. We signed our daughter somewhere else where it is amazing how much more she has learned in little less than 2 months. My concern and why I'm writing this review, are the children left behind. When you look up to someone like I saw them look up to their sensei, and then your sensei is giving them a moral speech of 'be careful who you hang around with, choose your friends correctly, etc. but then turns around and SHOWS or SAYS the contrary, then that child will follow his/her example without realizing they are doing it because they are children and they do not know better, so careful who you choose.

This studio is amazing, it is the one activity that my children are always eager to go! They would go if the studio was open Sundays as well lol! It is the only activity as well that teaches life skills that are built into the lessons. The instructors work individually with each students to help them excel to their potential. When they started they were nervous to go into class, Sensei Sophie came and attempted to make my child comfortable which after several attempts worked. Great program it is not very often your area has a world champion instructor and even less do we see that instructor teaching every class but that is what happens at GFMA. Totally professional, all the success is well deserved. We contacted the studio about a trial session and even the way they answered was thorough and provide details on everything. Where do I start…. About 4 months ago I was looking into trying my daughter in a new sport. She has tried swimming, gymnastics and dance and I wanted to expose her to something different. I found Guelph Family Martial Arts on their webpage and I was immediately impressed with the Knee High Ninja Program and all the benefits martial arts has for a child’s development, focus and success in life and at school. When I stepped into the dojo that day with my daughter I didn’t know what to expect. I was blown away and I have never looked back. I didn’t know who Sophie or Nathan Skoufis were at first, but I certainly know now. It’s not just their immense wealth of knowledge and skill level, trophy upon trophy lining the walls, it’s the feeling you get when you go. You are a part of something, part of a family and part of a community. They are two of the most kind, genuine, modest and sincere people I know and I am honored to know them and to learn from them. I have been involved in many sports as a child and have experienced good and bad coaches. Sensei Nathan is among the best I have seen. He has a genuine love and passion for what he does and it shows in the way he teaches. He keeps the kids engaged, listening and learning all while they are having fun. He is incredibly patient and has a natural ability for teaching and connecting with kids. My daughter loves going to karate and talks about it daily which speaks volumes. Since starting with GFMA her behaviour at home and at school has significantly improved. I feel she will be very well prepared to deal with life’s challenges as she grows up with the skills, both physical and mental, that she is learning from martial arts. Shortly after she started, I joined kickboxing. It has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. I feel challenged each class, every day is something different, I am learning new skills and having fun with a great group of people. It’s something I look forward to each day, so much so, that I cancelled my gym membership and I will be starting karate as well. I chose to do this for myself, but it is also something I can do with my daughter and there really is no better place to be than at Guelph Family Martial Arts. My son is on the autism spectrum and started karate classes with Nathan and Sophie at GGMA almost 18 months ago. They have been great about working with his needs and strengths and understanding his sensory issues. When he seemed unable to focus in a large class, they came early so he could have one on one sessions until he was able to integrate into a small class. He has also overcome his fear/dislike of loud, sudden noises and clapping. Joining in and clapping for a classmate who has made an achievement. I'm so grateful to Nathan and Sophie for their patience and great teaching skills and so glad that he has had this wondeful experience.
