Here you will be able to see the feddbacks of people like you who are using the services of The Hive Climbing and Fitness (Gym) in the territory close to British Columbia (Canada).
Nowadays this firm gets a score of 4.7 out of 5 and that rating is based on 127 reviews.
As you can see its rating is basically the highest, and it is based on a very large number of reviews, so we can be pretty sure that the evaluation is very faithful. If people have bothered to give their feddback when they are pleased with the business, it works.
You know that we don't usually bother to give tatings when these are positive and we usually do it only if we have had a problem or issue...
This Gym is classified in the category of Gym.
Great community for any kind of climbers, supportive & easy going staff. New boulders every two months.
Great setting, beautiful gym, it's just really out of the way :(
This is my go to gym when I come to Vancouver. The problems here focus more on proper form and technique with good chunky holds rather than being super crimpy, dynamic, or strength based. The Hive grade system is super divisive. I've been to various bouldering gyms around the world and Hive is the only gym that doesn't use the V grade or UK grade. Instead it groups all V grades into 6 categories. This allows climbers to challenge themselves with a higher grade than your are comfortable with which makes you unknowingly climb about a grade higher than usual. The problem is that there is no way to properly track your progress. One of the oddest things is the texture of their sloper holds. They are the most oddly textured holds I've experienced. Instead of a more dry and sandpaper-esque texture, the holds feel like a layer of waxy paint with added texture for grip. Super odd. Overall, I would definitely recommend the gym if your into bouldering. Most of the problems are beginner freindly and seem to be catering to the more casual crowd. Could be a downside if you're a V7+ climber.
Great place to fall off walls
Great gym!
Dopest, litest, bestest gym on the coast. Goated.
Great gym overall. My couple complaints are the following: they should try to reset areas on opposite sides of the gym to avoid overcrowding - today there was around 40 people hanging at the front while in the remainder of the 60% of the gym was empty. Also, they should really hang the hangboards higher, I’m 6’2” and when i reach up the hangboards are at my elbows which means that if i want to add weight it literally touches the ground - the squat rack upstairs avoids this as it has multiple levels which is what they should do with the hangboards. It would also be great if they added a moon board or a kilter board as sometimes its just better for practice and has thousands of problems. The one in poco rocks!!!
Good climbing GYM !
Top notch COVID protocols, great equipment, routes rearranged regularly, reasonable rates as far as I can tell. They've even got a free weight area with everything you need for a proper weight workout that is criminally underused. I'll be getting a membership as soon as I get out of my current one!
As other have mentioned, no cave and no top-outs, which is a bit of a miss. However, this gym is a big improvement on the Vancouver and North Vancouver gyms, for a few reasons. 1. Layout: The long, narrow layout spreads out the crowd (no bottlenecks) and provides young kids and more beginner climbers their own separate area at the end of the gym. This is a great solution seeing as this location is far more geared to families, birthday parties etc. 2. Traffic: It's way, WAY less crowded...for now, at least. I went mid-day on both Saturday and Sunday and it was nice and cool with tons of space and nearly no wait on any popular problems. Hoping the location keeps it a bit more chill for a while, which also reduces wear & tear on the (shiny, new, clean) facilities and walls. Be warned...shiny and new means some rough holds, especially the volumes. I got two flappers in as many days from not super hard climbing. 3. Facilities: I was pleased to find that this gym has two large, private shower rooms as well as a large single room Accesible washroom located on the main floor, away from the climbing walls/traffic. This is a positive difference for me from other gyms I've been to, including those in the Hive network, which have had only group-style shower rooms (separated by curtains, but still) or washrooms right in high traffic areas (N. Van is 5-10 ft from the wall). It's nice to take a shower or change in privacy, good for families, and it was smart not to put the bathroom right on the gym floor as hopefully it makes people think twice before wearing their climbing shoes into the bathrooms...gross. A family of 4 could easily shower/change in one of the shower rooms. 4. Boulder Problems: The problems are better spaced/less crossing which means more climbers can be safely sending simultaneously, so less waiting around. I'm new to bouldering (not to climbing in general) and found an ok selection of problems for me, probably 30% I could top, 20% I could flash, and the other 50% were challenging in a fun way. I saw experienced climbers with plenty of problems that they needed multiple attempts or couldn't send. The review about not having hard enough problems may be true for very experienced/skilled climbers, but you can always up the difficulty by changing beta. There was a good mix of holds including lots of volumes and slopers. The only suggestion I have for the future is to make sure the staff is more comfortable talking to parents who let their kids run wild/walk under people on the wall/climb rainbow on fixed problems. Kids are kids and that's to be expected; I did have a few times where kids crossed my route/got too close for comfort with no staff or parent intervention despite them both being around. I don't like having to be "that guy." With the amount of families and young kids at this location especially, it's important to nip that in the bud before injuries happen. Oh, and put some brushes throughout the gym. I live in Vancouver, work in North Van, and I will be driving out to this gym at least once a week because it's really so much more comfortable than the other two. Hoping they are able to hit the sweet spot between too few customers to stay in business and absolutely rammed with people all the time. Happy climbing!
Super clean, various different style of bouldering problems and walls. Friendly staffs! Upstairs fitness area is also awesome!
Great location. New routes twice a week at least, and tons of variations for all skill level.
Awesome sets but no AC
Great variety of routes, very covid-safe.
Great gym
I love this place. This is the best bouldering gym in the area in my opinion. The biggest factor that makes this climbing gym the best in my opinion is that it is air conditioned whereas other gyms do not have air condition. When you are exercising a lot, you need a environment a bit colder than room temperature. So having air condition is very important to keeping a comfortable experience. The facility is very spacious and it's very clean and maintained. The staff here are very friendly and helpful. They have a fitness area as well. This gym has a lot of lockers compared to other climbing gyms. They have a foot shower, an actual shower, change rooms, and very clean bathrooms.
Amazing variety and exceptional staff and atmosphere
Really nice bouldering gym. There's drop-in at this location and there's a free 15min orientation & fall assessment for first-timers (safety is important!) There is also lockers and a warm up space upstairs. The only thing I's note is that their level 1 climbs actually range quite abit in difficulty. I tried two different level 1 climbs that were unexpectedly more difficult than what I experienced elsewhere, so I was abit discouraged that the difficulty seemed higher at this gym. Then I found two other level 1 climbs tucked at the very back of the gym that were ALOT easier. Would be better if the grading system was more consistent so that it's easier to find suitable climbs for your level. Other than that, great place (was sore for days).
Very open and spacious facility, much nicer layout than the Hive on Industrial Ave. Arguably a nicer layout than the one in North Shore too since the floor space is narrow and long, which really helps spread out the crowd. Routes are nicely spaced and have a variety of styles. Feels similar to Project Cloverdale. Minor downsides are no routes that require topping out, and no cave climbing. Fitness area still in progress, so looking forward to it! Close to the SkyTrain and just off the highway, so fairly easy to get to. If driving, be sure to park in the spots with the Hive logo (right in front of the entrance)! The other spots require pay parking.
First visit. Huge huge space for all levels including huge fitness areas, perfect for spending hours working out. Much better than Vancouver location, much brighter cleaner and better smelled. Super friendly staff and well designed facilities. Huge space at the reception hall for other recreational activities. Definitely will come often. Probably won't visit Vancouver location again ????
Excellent Boulder problems.
Awesome new location, spacious, clean and the staff are super helpful and friendly. The change room situation is a bit confusing.
Very impressed. Knowledgeable, friendly staff, and a very clean environment. My daughter and I had a very enjoyable experience.
A great bouldering gym just like its predecessors on Main Street in Vancouver and in North Vancouver. Nice long layout with an assortment of problems. A great location to experience bouldering problems of a slightly different style as compared to the other two gyms in the hive community. 4/5 as the Main Street location will always be my favourite due to its coziness and familiarity.
Nice gym
This place is huge! Great bouldering gym. Staff are helpful and friendly. They have great affordable courses as well. Glad they opened this spot in Surrey!
Great climbing gym, very clean and well managed.
Loved it! Really great infrastructure, the really convenient store, peice.of rentals and variety of routes for all levels of climbers
Very disappointed. We were going to climb the whole family today, did all arrangements and arrived just to find out that even our youngest (just turned 3) have to wear mask. Everyone who works with children (schools, daycares, science world, health care, ets.) understands that mandatory masks for small kids is pretty impossible and kind of unnecessary. But hive thinks they are special. So we as a climbing family with small kids felt unwelcome and we didn't want to force 3 years old kid to wear mask for 2 hours so we left. Outrage!
This was my first time doing a boulder climbing experience, so it was nice that the staff gave us instructions on how to climb and fall properly. Boulder climbing is so much harder that I thought it would've been. Great experience for sure!
I climb regularly at the Hive's Vancouver and North Shore locations. But twice I've enjoyed the experience of taking tiny people to climb at the new-ish Surrey location and it's been an adorable, memorable experience. Thanks to the staff here for so patiently and lovingly introducing my little friends to the wall and training them to fall off it in three easy steps.
Great environment, very clean, the space is massive and it also has a mini gym upstairs!
Great bouldering gym! Lots of space to climb and parking isnt too bad either.
(Translated) It is clean and spacious. (Original) 깨끗하고 넓네요 .
I feel very safe climbing here even during the pandemic. There are a lot of safety measures in place and hand sanitizer everywhere. The Surrey location is especially spacious although it can still be challenging to maintain 2m distance from other climbers. Friendly service and fun routes for all levels.
Super clean and super kind staff
Very nice and clean facility
Good equipments overall. The staff will laugh at your face if you ask for ice. I guess injuries are hilarious to them. ????
This place is keeping my soul alive in the Vancouver dark and rainy months. The projects switch often and with something for all skill levels. There is a little gym on the second floor. Its the perfect size gym for stretching or building muscle before and after your climb. They've even got a little shop with drinks. Best of all its as if all the kindest and courteous people either work here or are climbing here!
This is not a family friendly gym. The facility itself was okay and the staff friendly, but the rules are unreasonable. They would not allow me and my sons to climb together. The adult supervisors are not allowed to climb, I had to just watch. We will not be back, we will continue to go to other gyms in the area that allow us all to climb together.
Our company did a facilitated program at The Hive and had a blast! Our instructor was super knowledgable and our session was in a pace that was challenging yet enjoyable for everyone. I would recommend the group program for any company that's looking for a socially-distanced team bonding event!
We took the introduction to bouldering class with Amber. She was fantastic, definitely recommend taking a class with her. 10/10
Super fun and welcoming staff ????
My fave bouldering gym! Also all the staff are great. :)
Even when it is busy there is lots of space to climb
I was introduced to bouldering by some friends and was allowed a free entry for my first time since my friend was a member. The overall atmosphere is very chill, friendly and welcoming. They still require everyone to wear a mask
Really love climbing. Its unfortunate I went during a time where they did not have any easier problems or routes to solve.
Great gym to find new projects that push you to improve.
I’ve just signed up for the next year at the Hive Surrey. I can’t say enough about Brad, the manager, and the entire staff team. They “get” customer experience and have created a fun, supportive, and challenging environment for people to grow. These friendly people know their stuff and you can tell they love what they do. Our experience started with the open house bbq and from there I enrolled one of my kids into their lesson program. I took the introduction to bouldering course which came with an all-in 2 week membership. Now I’m all-in for the next year and looking forward to the great times ahead bouldering. I highly recommend this place!
Charlie was super nice and friendly, and showed me and my girlfriend (total beginners) the basics and made us feel super comfortable and confident! As for the COVID procedures I felt very safe as we had to book an appointment so there weren't as many people and everyone was able to keep a lot of distance. No wait on holds either which was nice! Will definitely be there again :)
I took the Intro to Bouldering course with Jessica; I highly recommend anyone who's looking to get into bouldering to take it. I learned a lot of things that I would have never thought of on my own. Facility is clean, and staff/patrons are super friendly. I highly recommend checking them out!
Its a great climbing gym, diverse selection of walls and large spaces although i found the difficulty is generally harder than other branches. Staff are super nice and helpful and buying equipment isn't terribly expensive for beginner climbers. There's an arcade next door as well.
Fun gym
Pretty cool place. Very neat, organised and great bouldering problems. It's pretty new and it seems to be still improving.
I will start by saying, I love ALL 3 Hive locations. I visit all 3. I live closest to the Vancouver Hive, but I find my self making the trip to the surrey hive about 75% of the time. The Surrey Hive is in my opinion superior in: - Cleanliness - Boulder problems (mostly talking quality, but definitively quantity as well) - Only gets busy on Saturday and Sunday. Most days I share the gym with maybe 10 other climbers. -Excellent Lighting -Huge wall space that is stretched to avoid congestion -Tons of parking -Air conditioning in the summer ! ! ! (Vancouver Hive...rip in this department) Cons to Surrey Hive - No campus board :(. (yet?!)
Great gym. Really responsible handling of COVID.
Excellent place for a work out. Interesting routes and friendly staff.
My fourth climbing gym in the last year. Super affordable for students with really interesting climbs. They have new and clean changing areas, a foot bath and all your climbing gear for sale. Easily the best gym yet!
(Translated) Nice playground (Original) 很好的运动场
The area is well lit, they have a weightlifting room (open space upstairs), facilities are clean, and the walls have lots of variations where you bounce between areas without getting bored
I love this place. I got multiple times a week and it's always a great time.
Really nice gym!
girls so cute, 5
Not much space, and very expensive compared to other places. Also don't like that they don't have the V level system
This place is very well taken care of One thing I noticed about this place is that is the employees that work here. they do a great job with keeping this place clean and comfortable. They are also more than willing to help with the problems on the walls and give great advice on how to complete them. The extra perks that comes with this gym is great as well like the feet washing station and towels are a huge bonus.
Very friendly, personable staff. Felt welcome from the first day I walked in! Highly recommend this gym if you're thinking about giving this awesome activity a try.
Great climbing gym with multiple locations across metro Vancouver now! Great for kids as well! I wish they didn't stop allowing dogs in but I understand it.
Such a lively and clean environment. Glad To find this climbing facility with friendly staff.
Consumer Beware: Me and my gf were thinking of joining and then we read their waiver... They are not responsible for any injury that could happen on or outside the grounds (which is understandable) but this is true even when it is completely their fault and are to blame for bad instruction or carelessness???? "I understand that negligence includes failure on the part of any released party [anyone related to this company] to take reasonable steps to safeguard or protect me from risk" Plus also if you sign this, anyone related to this company in whatever way possible known to man will be exonerated for anything related to you... even if you don't know it... "I further release and give up any and all claims and right that I may have against any released party ... including those of which I AM NOT AWARE OF, those NOT MENTIONED ON THIS RELEASE, and those RESULTING FROM ANYTHING THAT HAS HAPPENED UP TO NOW" intense...
Amazing staff and great space and facility. Very good experience for first time climbers to try out and enjoy the day.
Always a good time
So much fun, big space and lots of interesting routes to play on.
Justina was great!!
Really amazing space and excellent staff, beyond friendly! :) It's still on its baby legs, (at time of this review), after just opening, but can't wait to see what it grows into. And am so happy to have a second option outside of Vancouver that isn't super busy! Thanks guys! ????
Good bouldering gym with a varied selection of routes.
Great place, clean and wide. Lots of bouldering holders.
Great summer camps for kids! Both of my kids thought it was the best summer camp they had been to, plus they are climbing a lot better. Leor and other staff were awesome!
Really nice facility, clean and staff is very welcoming. Change the climb layout very often so as not to grow stale. Only issue is how expensive the monthly pass is
Great gym! Staff are always warm and welcoming. Coming from the Hive Vancouver, this gym is super spacious! One thing I really appreciate about the Hive Surrey is their COVID regulations were stronger than other locations (probably due to the space and lay out of the gym). I feel really safe visiting this gym. The community here is stellar (as with all locations of the Hive!). I'd say the problems are a bit more difficult than the Hive Vancouver, and took a bit of a learning curve to get acquainted with the grading at this location. For example, I could routinely get up 2 Hex's at Vancouver but struggled to keep that up at this location.
Kids enjoyed and had unique fun and excitement
Clean and spacious, and staff are super friendly like the other gym locations. It's less busy than the Vancouver location, and more convenient to get to than North Van.
Staff are friendly. It's a fun place to climb.
Been going there ever since It opened last year. Great walls, staff & gym.
Great facility with plenty of space. Very clean. And the route setting is amazing. Has a bit of that je ne sais quoi...
Awesome staff, great variety of routes, spacious, and less crowded than the other locations ????????
Enjoyed the session.
The newest addition to the hive chain is fantastic. It's a large modern gym that is air conditioned making it awesome in the summer time. The route setting is consistently well thought out, unique and frequent. They have a dedicated workout and stretching area in the mezzanine along with free showers that make for a refreshing evening workout. This is one of the top gyms in the lower mainland for bouldering. The hive grading system may bother some but it helps eliminate the need to chase grades as well as reducing the risk of becoming a soft or sandbagged gym.
(Translated) The brother service at the front desk explained warmly and meticulously, the venue was clean and free of odors, the functions were complete and affordable, and the parking space was sufficient. It is suitable for people of all ages to expand and exercise. (Original) 前台小哥服务热情讲解细致,场地干净没有异味,功能齐全价格实惠,停车位充足。很适合各年龄段人去拓展和锻炼。
I love this place. I wish there was one closer to my house so I could go more often But The only problem is, is that I got so good that I end up climbing up to the rafters and get stuck up there
Great atmosphere and fun problems.
Hive Surrey used to be my primary gym before I moved. Staff members are genuinely friendly and helpful. Temperature is well regulated during summer months (looking at you, Hive Vancouver ????). I don’t know if there’s a new routesetter for this location, but the boulder problems have been much better recently. I’ll continue to visit occasionally, even if it’s now out of the way for me.
I go here regularly with my friends. We’ve been to Project Climbing and Coastal, and they just don’t offer the vibe that the Hive does. The music is great, the atmosphere is friendly, and more importantly, the problems are clear to follow. It costs a few dollars more than the other places. We’re all broke college students, and would absolute love if prices match with the competitors.
Clean and friendly gym with a wide range of climbing levels supported. Supportive atmosphere for new climbers.
Great gym :)
My child takes classes and loves it. Instructors are excellent and classes are engaging and fun. Facility is clean and tidy. Website is easy to use and book classes.
Super clean and my favourite route setting in Vancouver.
Great climbing gym. Always have a good time. Helpful, friendly staff make for a fantastic experience.
Great facility. Our granddaughter is taking a class. Instructor was really good and encouraging.
Very fun activity, beginner friendly as long as you're at a moderate fitness level
Friendly staff. Great atmosphere. One particular regular actually spent a large chunk of time explaining the fundamentals to us on our visit. Goes to show it is excellent for trying out and dipping your toes in the sport.
Great staff, loads of walls to climb, routes are always changing, gym upstairs is handy too.
Friendly staff, clean facilities. I feel safe climbing out here - the climbing community at Hive is so encouraging and respectful. Everyone keeps their masks on to climb and takes turns on problems. The Surrey location is big and they have AC for the hotter summer months.
originally I gave 3 stars but In all fairness, I am not strong enough to climb past level 2. There were alot of climbers there that were climbing at the top levels. So I am upgrading to 5 stars because it was not fair for me to judge them on my level of ability. I will definitely go back after I build some strength because it was fun and an excellent workout!
Really nice and modern facility, friendly staff and fun bouldering
This is the best Hive in Metro Vancouver with the best staff as well. Lots of space, a nice atmosphere, and a good mix of route setting styles will keep you interested. Also, while it's in Surrey, don't fear; it's in a safe place. Edit. Still a great place to climb during the pandemic! More space than most gyms, and they are back to not requiring bookings, which helps space every one out a bit.
I love Hive Surrey! The space, cleanliness and variety of problems is fantastic! Staff are very friendly as well. I have one other comment: Hive Surrey would be even better if better music is played. The atmosphere and climbing experience is strongly impacted by music - for better or for worse. Appealing to the musical tastes of the general climbing community would be a welcome change. Thank you!
Great staff and atmosphere!
The workers are really welcoming, the gym is a really fun exercising space, thanks Justina for giving us an orientation and being really friendly!
The best bouldering only gym I have been too. My home gym is Grand River Rocks in Kitchener, Ontario and this was definitely better for bouldering. No rope climbing is unfortunate because I like to do both in a climbing session, but if you are looking for bouldering this is where you need to go.
This is the cream of the crop! Friendly and helpful staff, clean facility, well lit, quick rotation of new problems. This place has it all.
My favorite bouldering gym ✨ Clean, great staff, beginner friendly. One of the few things I'm always excited about every week ????♂️????♂️????♂️
The gym is new and looking fancy, but comes with its own issues. The first appearance is great, until you notice the lack of benches for sitting. This leaves people to sit on the edge of the mats, where I twice nearly fell into people. Secondly, the bouldering rating system is straight awful. I understand the hexagon system is for branding purposes, but staff seemed to be split by what the V rating too hexagon scale was, and no visible diagram within the entire gym. Thirdly, this gym actually has a lack of climbs itself. The setting seems to appeal to the average V3 - V6 climber, with lots of climbs in that area. Very few climbs actually gave me a tough time, and I quickly noticed a lack of climbs for beginners. I spent 2 1/2 hours in the gym, and finished close to 75% of the climbs. I’m sure if I spent another day or two I could wrap up the rest of the climbs. Lastly, is the gym layout itself. You tend to find yourself walking a long distance back and forth because this gym has a long straight design, rather than a more fluid square design ( as seen in its competing gym’s in surrey Coastal Climbing Centre or Project ). I know the bus is too far down the road for them to change this, but an awful design will always take away from the experience. This gym has potential too improve, but as of right now I’d take that outrageous yearly membership price and spend it on one of the other two facilities in surrey, one being just 10 minuets down the road and offering rope climbing as well.
Employees are friendly and passionate about climbing. My only complaint is that there's no campus board or moon board for more serious training, but even so I still go 2-3 times a week
Great place to boulder both for beginners and all advanced people. Very welcoming staff that are accomodating.
Spacious facility with friendly staff and lots of variety in difficulty. Great for beginners. Washrooms, change rooms, and weight room are all open.
Friendly staff, good place to take your kids. Some other parents not watching their kids run around
I took my son and his friend there, had to fill out so many pages of questions and then a bunch for me and i wasnt even wall climbing. It took about 30 minutes to fill out the waivers, and get the right size shoes on and fitted. Obviously the kids were excited, it was about 37$ i went to pay but THEY DONT EXPECT CASH!! There is no sign up or anything to warn you, i didnt bring my cards ,The girl didnt even care that my boys couldn't get in, she was smiling saying we dont expect cash.
Great place Friendly staff Workout area upstairs
Great facility! Friendly staff! Great routes for beginners and advanced climbers.
Great climbing gym. Keep up the good work hive!
