I have golfed for close to 20 years, and can say with complete confidence that this was the worst experience I have ever had playing golf.
I was immediately questioned by a pompous proshop employee who questioned my answer that I was going to be walking the course. He was in fact laughing at me, so I asked if it was a long course or something because I didn't understand the reaction. He responded with saying that he knew I wasn't going to be walking, and that I was just going to hop on my friend's cart? (I didn't realize that was an issue in the first place) and it was not true at all? After an awkward exchange, I paid my green fee and left the club house feeling extremely disrespected.
To my disbelief, another issue came up in our group before we even teed-off. We were waiting for the group ahead of us on the first hole to reach the green so we could start to hit our drives. My one friend, who was walking, took a quick seat on my friend's cart (that he paid full price for), and was literally yelled at by the Marshall to "get off that cart right now" because he hadn't paid for it. The reaction was unwarranted, and could have been handled much better. The situation did not warrant being yelled at, and. my friend was using it for a quick seat, since there are no benches on the course.
The course design is very poor. They used the space that generally fits 18 holes, and squished in 27. The holes run way too close to one another. Tee blocks are placed extremely close to greens. I couldn't tell you the amount of times you almost get hit by a ball playing here. Goose Run especially. Pace of play was extremely slow, our round took just over 5 hours, and the 18 we played wasn't even 6,000 yards
I will say though, the course conditions were very good. Fairways were well kept, rough was even throughout. Greens rolled-out very well, and made for some challenging putts. One of the girls who delivers drinks was also able to return a phone that a player in our group had left behind. So it was not all negative!
I'm not one to make an online review, however after this experience playing at Conestoga Golf and Country Club, I felt compelled to do so, as I reached out to more golfers that I know and have had similar experiences with proshop employees especially.
It's truly disappointing that I had to pay money to have an experience like this. When I go out golfing I just want to have fun, and enjoy the nice weather. I'd rather not be called a liar, and then be yelled at before I even tee-off. Or worry about being hit by a ball, when I'm on a tee-box.
