REVIEWS OF Coal Creek Golf Resort IN Alberta

Jody Watson

Great course, tough greens, terrible wind

Doris Blanchard

Hidden Gem

Bobby Webber

Great golf course except for hole#9. Not my favorite hole. Fairways a bit firm but in great shape

Tyler Walker

Awesome course. Always is great condition, and a steal when it comes to price.

Nicholas Kasper

Totally impressed, well worth the drive

Ray Findlay

This place is absolutely amazing, the black bunkers are a must see! Was my first time golfing and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Randy Rasmussen

This coarse is truly a hidden gem, the hour drive out from Edmonton is well worth it, The greens are the best this side of red deer, true, and carpeted and Memberships at a decent price ….. LOVE IT ….

Chris McCahey

Great course, be even better in a month or two when the greens recover from the aeration

Stewart Sim (Foneguy88)

Alberta's hidden gem

Wally&Charlene Luberda

Course is in good shape for this year, Staff in clubhouse very snooty about average golfer. Golf map should be more designed so you know where to hit ball. Clubhouse has no atmosphere so golf and leave not worth to stay for a drink. With the lack of rain there should be warning signs as not to go down the bank as it was crazy to manage. Plus don't stay at there campsite its a field and no trees.

Douglas Spicer

I really enjoyed golfing here. The course is well kept, and quite challenging for me. The fairways seemed abit harder than what I am used to but, I consider it a good thing! ???? I would love to come back, and golf another 18 holes again. ????

BirdLover

Loved golfing at Coal Creek! Course is in beautiful shape and such fun to play. A unique experience and a real gem. Will definitely play again!

Marcel Paquin

Excellent day at Coal Creek golf resort. An excellent course in fantastic shape along with a great group of guys made for a great Friday.

Todd Rodgers

Great rates. Beautiful course.

Guy H

Love this course wish it was a bit closer but then it would be way more crowded

Brent Anthony

Pros: Large, fast, undulating, true rolling greens- Fun & challenging layout- Unique sand- Decent practice facility- Cons: Over an hour drive from Edmonton- Poorly marked yardages- No yardage books available- Hard pan fairways*- Tee boxes in poor condition*- Ridiculously slow pace of play (5.5 HOUR ROUND!!!)- Colour coding on the flags sucks. Were they out of red/white/blue flags?- *common characteristic of an immature course---- Conclusion: Not worth the 1.5 hour drive. I look forward to playing this course in a couple years once the fairways mature (on a weekday morning in hopes of getting around in <4.5 hours).

John Filipan

Course is in great shape quick greens

Richard Johnston

Awesome course

Sean Walters

This was absolutely worth the ride up from Calgary to get a wonderful round in. It's groomed extremely well and and black sand traps make for a fun experience. The course has old mine equipment scattered everywhere which is fun. Make this a must stop golf destination in Alberta.

Phil Bowers

Large open fairways that have matured nicely. The rough is punishing. Large greens that roll true and are well taken care of. Many well placed hazards making approaches challenging. Course layout is excellent IMO. Seems straightforward but many features to contend with including some blind approaches. Curse the 9th hole but look forward to next time.

Robin Mungall

Probably my new favourite course in the Edmonton area. The Good: Staff were friendly and welcoming, the course is in great shape. Greens are fast, putt true but soft enough to shoot for the pin. The black sand is pretty cool amongst the green landscape but more than that, it's also quite fluffy and easy to hit out of. Even the practice facility is top notch. Great experience overall. The Bad: I don't really have anything I didn't like. The Ugly: Just my fairway bunker shot on Hole 2

Corwin Chomay

Wow, what a wonderful hidden gem. I prefer this to Whitetail, redtail or goose hummock

Don MacLellan

Golf course is in excellent condition and greens are the best I've played in Edmonton.

OilCountryCardCollector 79

Excellent golf here! Course is challenging and fun. ???? The black sand bunkers are like none other and really set this this place apart. Prices for golf are amazing value! Every time I play here I want to come back

Percival Palania

great golf course and super friendly staff.

Scott MacIntosh

Beautiful course with very nice fairways and quick greens. The black sand makes the course unique and the old mining equipment is a reminder of its past. Great place ????

Brent Steeves

Course is in excellent condition, Jason and his staff were great hosts. Can't wait for the next round to happen.

Ken Mercier

Always one of the best courses in Alberta. Today was no different. Wish I could give it more stars

Danny Choi

Its a gem.

taterchip888

Hard course, but fun.

Tom E

Absolutely fantastic. I was apprehensive of coming here because it was over an hour drive from me in the city and there are plenty of course I enjoy within a 30 minute drive, but it was absolutely worth it. Course was in great shape even for being late season, and it's scenery was beautiful. It has nods to the mines that use to be in the area with some old equipment. Additionally while the course is generally wild open, there is still plenty of challenges to play around whether it's black sand traps, water or heavy grade changes. Full warn you, if you loose it in the rough it's gone so bring extra balls. This course is now one of my top 3 courses in the area and I will be back!

Brett Gorday

Wicked track

Terry Bennett

What a beautiful course! So scenic! Greens are in great shape and very challenging!

Alvin Thomas

A great course in fantastic shape, bring lots of balls because there is lots of water in play. Spectacular scenery and the black sand is really a nice touch.

Chris Gallant

Easily my favourite course to play in Alberta outside of Stewart, JPL & Silvertip. Played 07.08.21 & conditions were the best I’ve seen in Alberta this year. Membership worthy course

Anastasia O'Coin

Beautiful place to play golf and enjoy your weekend, good food, awesome service!

Darrell Vereschagin

Great golf course and reasonably priced

Kyle Martin

Great value. Great shape. Would definitely come back.

Charles/Stephanie Vantanajal

The course is in great shape. Enjoyed the peaceful drive, the customer service and the great company. The scenery wasn't bad either. Come see for yourself, you wont be disappointed

Pat Siever

Excellent fairways ( a bit short), greens are fast but in great shape

Aaron Heinrich

Great layout and was in great shape for early season. Very fast but very true greens.

Brendon Jones

A hidden gem. Very reasonably priced and well maintained course. The coal sand is very fine and fun to hit out of although I hear it's pretty thick in the rain. The course plays links style but also has some water and tree features to keep variety.

RODGER BERGSMANN

Great staff excellent course ????????????????????

Clinton Plamondon

Hidden gem here. Awesome course, friendly staff. Will definitely be coming back for another round. Love all the old mining equipment and elevation changes. Greens are fast and the black bunkers are amazing. Thank you so much for the awesome experience!!

Greg Lamer

Was told it was a great track and a must play. After driving 100 minutes arrived at the course and was told that we would only be able to play 13 holes starting on #6 because the first 5 holes were considered unplayable. They offered a food voucher or 9 hole rain check. It was pretty frustrating as I had called the day before to check on my tee time. Apparently the course was closed due to the water but nobody mentioned it. They just confirmed my T-Time and said, " See you tomorrow." I also like how they left one person at the pro shop(probably a summer student) at the desk to have to tell everyone who had arrived to play 18, that they could only play 13. Felt sorry for him as he got to try and explain to everyone why nobody felt the need to let people know about their decision. They certainly did not have a manager out front to answer people's questions. You can' t do anything about mother nature but you can certainly show some respect to people by notifying your customers of the situation. I would not have made the trek out on this day but would have certainly planned for another. Don't know if I will ever venture back out there, just felt like we got took. It's not only about the golf and the course, it's about the people you meet and how you are treated when you arrive at the course. When I got home I looked up the club's website. Sadly they did not even bother to post that they were playing 13 of 18 today. Just said, "Coal Creek is in tremendous shape from tee to green! Join us for a fantastic golf experience!"

EA Sailor

Very well maintained course Numerous demanding holes. Golfers ahead hidden on nine and ten so be careful when hitting. Friendly staff.

Peter

Terrific shape, always a wonderful experience with a welcoming atmosphere from all who work at this gem of a course.

Bradley Kothlow

Great course, cool black sand sandtraps, purchased some stylish swag, only critique would be clubhouse but can't expect much for a course so far out of town.

Mike Sobey

Just played Coal Creek last Sunday and it was in excellent shape. The staff at Coal Creek are awesome to deal with and you can tell that they truly appreciate the business. If you haven't ben to Call Creek, make the trip as it is well worth it.

Fred Toop

Excellent golf course and amazing staff. These guys get the whole "treat the customer right and he will come back" thing.

Steve Hole

It was awesome! We love this course. Quite challenging but beautiful. Great condition. Great service. Great price. Maybe the top public course in the Edmonton area.

Rob R

Very well taken care of course, the black sands and coal mining theme really add to the layout of the course. Greens were excellent easily one of the best I have played on this year. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to get out and enjoy a great day of golf

John Brough

This is not just a hidden gem, it may be the best golf course design in Alberta (even without mountain views!)

M Duncan

Fantastic value. Course kicked my as though.

Ken B Hermann

Great staff. Golf course is fantastic and unique and in great condition. The black sand is a great feature. This course is a must play !!!! Wow !!!

Pete Heck

Course is nice and difficult. But very annoyed with course maintenance throughout the day and especially the lack of attention from the groundskeepers. Plus the lack of a marshall for slow play. They have some work to do to make it worth the effort to come back.

Rob's Traeger Adventures

Best golf course. I have played at in along time

Yeeter Mcgavin

Amazing place, golf course is top notch and the campground is always pristine

zeldaprime

I've played quite a few courses around Edmonton, and this is a gem. When I describe this course I tell people, the course layout wouldn't be out of place as a web.com tour event location from the tips, and they always keep it in excellent condition. It is a personal favourite.

Kyle Duke

Came into this course expecting a lot... unfortunately waited 10min past our tee time to tee off. Beautiful course as told, which helped. Not an expensive round, $3 extra charge for using the range is unexpected, usually covered with 18. Now walking has its limitations, gaps through the ropes are not spaced properly for walkers most are extremely to small or openings are placed in out of the way places. Lots of hills and long walks from pins to tees. Some goat trails but again hills. Black sand is neat. Drink cart was running, only saw them twice on a longer round (due to waiting). If I could score just the course looks it would be a 5 stars. Lower price for the round and looks are reasons to come back.

Herb Lai

The golf course is in great playing condition. They have friendly staff. We will come play again.

Sean Kincaid

Beautiful layout. Challenging enough to make it fun but playable enough for all skill levels. Black sand traps are worth the drive and must be hit into at leadt once. Definitely will return

Aanand Mehta

Coal Creek is a beautiful course and superbly well maintained! Worth the short drive out from Edmonton!

GREG CLARKE

Unique course. Tough but fair

Tristan Gerrie

Love this golf course. Great shape and great price always.

Nathan McEntee

Beautiful course and great price!

Jayden Syrenne

Beautiful golf course. Wonderful design, great greens and fantastic fairways. The black sand is phenomenal to play out of and even through all the rain the course is in tip top shape. Very friendly staff and beverage cart. I will definitely come back

Dwayne Smith

Beautiful course and great price and staff

Stephen C

Beautiful course and some of the best putting surfaces you will ever roll the rock on.

Bruce McIsaac

One of the best golf courses in Alberta

Gordon Martin

Fairways and greens are in perfect shape. Excellent value, well worth the drive if you are looking for a great golf experience. Bring your "A" game if you are looking to score well!!

Cindy st Germaine

Very challenging even though it may not look like it. Definitely need reservations.

JPB

Beautiful shape, long and tough layout - some holes are nasty! ???????? Well worth the drive from Edmonton - greens and fairways are pretty much immaculate. Greens are fast, beware! Nice clubhouse with great views, pleasant people, excellent beer cart service - all around, a great day.

dane rude

Nice place good people work here.

Cats Sands

What an experience! I cannot believe this course is not on list for best public courses in Score Magazine, as it should be. A tuff course if you shoot a good game. Big fast greens, options on drives, and nice elevation changes. We really enjoyed our time. Staff nice and friendly and quiet electric carts :) Wish I lived closer, I would get a membership as this course will not get boring. Thanks.

Jamie Stahl

Played Coal Creek yesterday, It is near peak season condition. The greens were in good condition, quick and rolling smoothly. The fairways and tee boxes were in the best condition I have ever seen them. The course is really starting to mature. Always a treat to play there,

Blair Norton

A great and well maintained course, the fairways are some of the best I've played on. A course that is out in the middle of know where and built over a coal mine ranks as one the nicest I've played, definitely worth the drive and highly recommended it.

John MCNAUGHTON

A true hidden gem. Pace was good, Course was in great shape, I will be back again soon.

Steve Podolski

Awesome Jewel in the middle of the prairie. Beautiful course very mature for a young course. Play it you will love it.

James Monsees

Greens are in great shape! Worth the trip

The Four Jack Podcast

Unreal golf experience from start to finish! Amazing layout with greens to match. Very playable for all skill levels, yet difficult enough to keep you on your toes. Green complexes are difficult yet approachable. Love it!

Drew Atkinson

Amazing

Rudolph Reece

Great course .

Allen

Great staff, great track. In my opinion one of the best in the area. Hidden gem

Ciprian Paslaru

Course is in great shape, highly recommended!

Coleman Rooksby

Very good course which will only get better as it matures. Good layout with plenty of interesting holes. The greens are very fast and the black sand in the bunkers is very heavy but they both make the course more interesting if you keep that in mind. A few of the bunkers in the back 9 don't have sand in them yet and it's clear there is some more work to be done on both the course and the clubhouse but it wasn't a big deal. Use of the driving range is included with green fees. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Definitely worth the drive from Edmonton; I can't wait to return later in the season.

Rene D

A very nice and challenging Golf Course. One of my favourites

Gary Nelson

This golf resort is an absolute gem! The course is magnificent, well kept and challenging, yet not so much to deter the average golfer. The setting is so original , utilizing the natural setting and coal mining equipment to truly enhance the whole golf experience. It is much closer to Edmonton than expected, and we'll worth the drive. My new favorite course around Edmonton for sure! The staff are spectacular, friendly, and so helpful! Gary Nelson Sherwood Park

Bob W

June 22/2021. Played Coal Creek today. What a great experience the fairways and greens are in excellent shape. It was a very busy day and we were finished in just over 4 hours. I plan on playing this course once a month. As everyone said this course is in the best condition of the courses I have played this year and will just get better. Even as bad as I played the course was fun.

Mike Zingel

Very well kept. Plan to go back again and again.

Tyler Rowan

Place was awesome . Just keep the ball on the fairway bunkers everywhere

Gerald Tisi

excellent place to golf

Rod D

While the golf course itself is amazing, kudos to the ground crew. I also agree should be in Score Golfs top 100, but there are a couple of things that really spoilt my enjoyment of the round. First, too many "keep the cart on the path" holes. I hate having to take 3 clubs and walk across to the fairway to get to my ball, especially when yardages are NOT marked on the path! I don't understand why some holes you can take the cart on the fairway and others you can't.... Secondly, at the end of my round we had to park the cart in a park return area at the top of the hill, REMOVE OUR CLUBS, AND CARRY EVERYTHING ACROSS THE PARKING LOT TO OUR VEHICLE!!!!!! Really??? I don't think I'll go back. Shame.

diana

Great course

Arthur Krompocker

Fun course...definitely be back

Chris Meredith

Great challenging course. Super fast undulating greens. Would be nice if there was consistency in the fairways. Some are lush where you can get under the ball, some are really firm. Would definitely play again.

Don Nguyen

Excellent condition this year. Golfers out there should have this course in your list at least once a year.

Geof Barber

Nice layout, greens in great early season shape. Definitely worth the drive.

Ken R.

Beautiful course. Nice layout which offers many challenges on every hole. Course was in great shape.

Terry Warshawski

As stated in a previous review until Garmin or someone maps the course a yardage book would be a large help as there are many blind drives. I will play this course again.

Wayne Peter

Great golf. Greens are fast and in great spring shape! Great staff and great service!

adam lawrence

Wow! amazing course. Easily the best greens I've played in a long time. I could play here a hundred times and never get bored of its layout. Not sure who designed it but they're a genius :)

Tania Plawke

Awesome golf course. great value

Leonard Fowler

Too many cart path only holes. Would probably be more enjoyable to walk. Very slow pace of play. Well over 5 hours on a Monday. ????

kevin briand

Great golf course, friendly staff!!!

Steven Hertzog

The course is 45 minutes east of Sherwood Park but well worth the drive ????????️‍♂️⛳

Stephanie Eacott

Great course in very good condition. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Definitely will go back again.

Coal Creek is a gem in the Edmonton Area. Don't let the drive out scare you! Not only is it a beautiful drive, and it goes by very quickly, the course is worth it! Coal Creek challenges you but also allows you to enjoy your round of golf. One of the best in the area!

Kevin Zowtuk

Awesome golf course to play, well worth the drive.

Stewart St. Dennis

Gorgeous and challenging golf.

Michael Blum

Spectacular course from start to finish. What a hidden gem in Alberta. Looking forward to playing Coal Creek again soon!

Ken Van Rentergem

One of the best courses in the Province. Lots of choices off the box. The Silver/Blue combo was our choice. Fairways are lined by some strategically placed bunkers. Greens are lightning fast and run true. Good putters will score here. Carts need to be replaced and cart paths require some work. Clubhouse has some tasty food. No beer cart.

Brent Chupka

Probably best course in central Alberta. A must play.

Shannon Girard

Beautiful done course

Mr. E

Great staff. Great course. Fun time.

David Harris

Great golf course

Hali LaPointe

Beautiful course! We did the Friday night date night, 18 holes with a cart for two plus food for $110 is excellent. Conditions were great and landscape is gorgeous. Definitely not one to miss in Alberta.

Matt D

Mud pit for a parking lot. I should have brought my rubber boots instead of golf shoes it was so bad. The course was decent though.....

Gord Hissett

Jason, Jamie, and Dean make a great team to manage this golf course professionally but in a very friendly manner. The greens are the best i play each year and the fairways have matured perfectly. Great practice facility. Wonderful staff in the kitchen preparing great meals with excellent customer service. Jamie has a great golf business approach with lots of stock in his proshop. Dean is the best greens keeper i have met. He is dedicated to his craft. Jason sets his staff up for success providing his people with direction and yet letting them use their expertise to make this golf course the best in Alberta

Sean Carman

Great shape. ????????

Darrin Mcdonald

Best greens in the Edmonton area.

Bob Dufresne

Coal Creek is a great layout, nice shape and greens are rolling fast and true. Always a treat to play this course. If you haven't played this for a while, or ever, you just have to go. ????

Richard Stevens

Coal Creek is the most unique Golf experience A wide range of tee boxes that span from 5300 to 7200 yards which makes the course fun to play no matter who you are golfing with and what their skill level is. The black bunkers look amazing (especially with the yellow canola fields in the background), these alone make it worth the drive. The staff is awesome and I had a great experience playing here.

Adam Gordey

An awesome course built over an old open pit coal mine. It's history is weaved into its new identity, with some of the original buildings and machinery worked into the landscape.. new covid rules in place to keep everyone safe.. don't let this course deceive you, there's a good use of the natural landscape with many water hazards and black sand bunkers dotted throughout.. I'll be back for sure to this once hidden gem

grant nahirniak

Best golf course in Edmonton area.

calvin ewashkiw

Not a bad course at all

Larry Short

Great course. Friendly staff But don't show up .we want it To ourselves.

Greg Connell

Hidden Gem! Amazing weekday deals, if you don't mind a bit of a drive from Edmonton it is well worth it.

Jeremy A

Great course, challenging & typically in great condition. Golfed several times in the last few summers.

Dave Cameron

Coarse in good shape for fall. Would be nice to see a marshal out for slow play. Good value for the money.

David Roberts

I finally played Coal Creek for the first time. Every hole is different and memorable, and the course condition is 10/10. Greens are in perfect condition and lighting fast. We played blue / silver combo tees which was perfect for our foursome (handicaps of 10-18). Coal Creek is the best track in the Edmonton area right now. I’d include the private courses on that list.

Firus Karribean

Nice Place Nice People

Terry Havanka

Best course in middle Alberta hands down!

Megan Cullen

First time golfing here and played 18 holes. Challenging on the back 9 with the water and bunkers. Loved having the mining equipment displayed around the course.

Todd Fountain

Great course!! Challenging but not too long.

Evangeline Brodoway

Very creative course design. From photos, we were sure the bunkers were black sand, which we had experienced before in the Caribbean (volcanic sand), but they weren’t. Legit coal bunkers. Totally new experience! Fairways and greens very well maintained.

T. C.

Awesome hidden gem! Black sand gold course within an hour from Edmonton

The course is in great shape for so early in the year. I love the black sand. The course has the feel of a course in Scotland.

Trevor Blinston

This course is in great shape and the staff were friendly. The course is challenging without being a discouragement. I recommend checking it out.

dave cameron

Have friends that compare to courses in Scotland. Not a great course to walk as many holes long distance between greens and next tee box. Very fun and challenging track.

shawn harrington

Awesome! Shape!

Robert Gaudet

Great course, reasonable rates and a friendly staff

Gerry Robinson

Great track, hidden jewel of Central Alberta

Ace

Windy and a little far from the city but great course and good price

Chris H

Great course was very surprised well worth the trip!

Doug Bailey

Great course. ..

Janet Vervynck

Coal creek resort is beautiful, well maintained and very interesting to play. However...what's the point of renting a cart when most of the fairways are roped off. There was alot of waiting for players to walk on and off the fairways to play their ball. Yah, the grass is great but they should let you DRIVE on it. It was not our intention to walk through ALOT of the course. Won't go back.

Maurice Lehman

Love this place, not for faint of heart as I discovered... the course is in fantastic shape, loved the day with my buddies from Beaumont.

Diana Labrecque

Very nice course and super friendly staff. Easy to find. A perfect little afternoon getaway

,Henry Rebelo

Best course in the area. Worth the drive.

trenton boake

Unreal hidden gem!!!!!!

Neil McLean

Great links course...fantastic shape...worth the drive

John Boyer

My new favorite course in Alberta. Great course layout, challenging and beautiful, with black sand sand traps, rolling fairways and large undulating greens. The price makes it fantastic and more than pays for the extra gas to get there.

da newf

Nice course, but it's in the middle of nowhere

Ralph Jones

As usual the course was in great condition and the clubhouse staff made our visit very pleasant. Greens are in excellent condition....putts run smooth and roll true.
