In fall of 2015 I ordered a leaf shredder from Gardener's Supply. After several weeks I had not received it so I contacted the company. I was told to give it more time which I did. Two weeks later I still had not received it so I contacted the company again. They could not provide a tracking number but assured me the item had been ordered from the manufacturer. Numerous phone calls later I was told they had located the tracking number and the item had been delivered (they did not provide me with the tracking number). I explained that I did not receive the item. They told me at that time they would issue a refund for the item. However I was never issued a refund and contacted the company again in March, 2016. Again, I was very politely told a refund would be promptly issued. No refund was issued. Not receiving a $150 plus shipping costs item that I ordered and paid for is one thing...being lied to on two separate occasions (no matter how politely) is in my opinion an even bigger black mark against this company. Shame on Gardener's Supply! I will not order from them again.

A very comprehensive garden store. I have been ordering from their catalog for years and it was good to see the store. This location did not stock the depth of some of the products in the catalog but it had other products as well as plants and ornaments for the garden. They have a discount program for locals as well.

Purchased a house plant which soon after developed scale. When I called they said they had no warranty on house plants. This was after they told me it was most likely from the planting soil, or the pot. Both of which came with the plant. Very disappointed since this was not an inexpensive purchase.

I placed a large online order and will never order from Gardener's Supply again. Parts of the shipped order were damaged and were missing pieces, specifically, the self watering pot conversion kits. Can't communicate with customer service as they do not reply to emails and don't answer their phones. Sent 2 emails with no reply. Called twice. First time I was on hold for 30 minutes and then I gave up. Second time I was on hold for one hour and 15 minutes at the end of which I got a voice message saying that they couldn't process my call and to try again. Apparently they were closing down for the day and just dropped me after I waited on hold for 75 minutes. They also don't reply to requests from the credit card company. Ironically, I purchased two items from them that were made in India and there they know how to package items so they arrived intact. But the locals who dumped all my stuff into one box were negligent and careless. I first tried them after PayPal sent out a blast email they had negotiated with Gardener's Supply, which apparently Gardener's Supply wasn't up to the task. We're now three weeks past my order and still no resolution.

I ordered a double pole trellis.. waited a couple of weeks. I got a shipping notice that is was one on the way with a photo of my double pole trellis. What did I receive? I huge metal bench. The box is enormous. So I called.. waited an hour then hung up. Emailed several times. And I got exceptionally ticked when I saw the 'Your order is now complete' email. WTH? Today, I waited nearly two hours then their phone line rang then relayed .. "I'm sorry. You'll need to call back another time". Again, WTH! And based on other's reviews, and Facebook comments... I am not alone in my grievance with this business. Buyer beware!.

Good and bad. The good: Order arrived quickly, and seems to be in good shape. The bad: Right after making the order I tried to cancel. There was no way to cancel! I emailed them to cancel, but they blocked my email! My email came back unread. Then I phoned them. For 30 minutes their rep gave me the runaround, then put me on hold. No one came on. After 20 minutes, I hung up. I looked at reviews by others. Not good. They are rated B-Minus by BBB (Better Business Bureau). But today, my order did arrive, and everything seems in decent shape.

I placed an online order for two items on May 3rd and paid in full with Venmo. The money was deducted from my balance. One of these items was on backorder and the other shipped out on May 7th. I was also charged the full amount in Venmo for this item that had already been deducted from my account on May 3rd. I attempted to contact Gardner's via phone and was told that it would be a 45 minute wait to speak to a representative. Fair enough - the world's a crazy place right now. After 75 minutes of waiting, my phone call disconnected and I thought I had hit a button somehow. Frustrated, I emailed the company acknowledging that it was late in the week and I would just like an answer regarding these transactions at some point next week. Today is May 15th and the only emails I have received are automated ones boasting about their wonderful customer service and plethora of great products available. I also attempted to call back and was disconnected at approximately 50 minutes when I wasn't even touching the phone. Here's the kicker - I call Venmo customer support because it's my only available recourse at this point. The representative from Venmo tells me the purchase I made on 5/3 (that was subsequently deducted from my account) is showing as a "pending" status and the one from 5/7 has been fully processed. That's right - I've essentially been charged twice for the exact same thing and then Gardner's will hopefully (?) release the hold that was already taken from my account balance on 5/3 when the backordered item ships...in June. I am very fortunate that the items I ordered were not exponentially expensive (less than $150 total)...but what if I had spent thousands of dollars on backordered items? Would Gardner's just have the authority to put an additional hold on multiple thousands of dollars out of my account until they were able to meet their obligation? In summary, nothing about my experience with Gardner's Supply Company has been helpful or enjoyable. If a company cannot meet the demand of its orders, it's ethically responsible to either increase staffing or work hours or stop taking additional orders. More importantly, it's borderline criminal to hold a customer's money in some undefined escrow until a company sees fit to fulfill their obligations. This will be the first and last time I use Gardner's Supply Company.

Ordering bulk soil or mulch? Beware... Hate to give this review because I love the Gardner Supply retail shops and nurseries, but have had a very poor experience ordering bulk top soil. My order was confirmed on 4/18. At the time of confirmation, lead times on deliveries were 7 days out - as stated by their website. On 4/27 I received a call to schedule my delivery between 4/10-4/12. Three weeks between order and delivery is not okay, especially with a misleading ETA and no communication whatsoever. It's been a very frustrating experience and has put my own home project timeline in a precarious position. It has been 2 days since I received my voicemail and I have since tried reaching out many many times. I am unable to connect with anyone via phone or email in the bulk department. I've seen others here reporting very similar experiences. I will be cancelling my order. I have since ordered with Livingston Farm in Bristol. They have cheaper rates ($42/yard) but higher delivery costs. It nearly evens out, but I connected with someone on my first call and they were able to commit to a delivery within 5 days of placing the order. Gardener's is great if you want to pick up a cactus on a whim, but I would think twice about doing business for any bulk landscaping supplies.

This concerns interactions and general impressions of this company. They are implacable in blocking reviews not wholly complementary on any forum they control. Their stuff is generally overpriced and they will dismiss with disdain any notion that they might better recall something that proved defective in function if not in materials and workmanship. I believe that there have been products available in Europe that surpass what they sell, but they will block any comparison unfavorable to what they sell. I wonder if they acquire exclusive rights to some products and then don't exercise those rights in favor of selling less well-made products that are in their existing line. if they ever discount some things the discount is miniscule. This is also true with buying multiples of some items. They DO have some unique items.

While I was a long time customer (spent a couple hundred every year), their handling of the Interval Compost debacle turned me off for good. I bought a pickup truckload of contaminated Interval Compost Garden Soil at the Williston location (prior to the recall) and they wouldn't refund me, only offered store credit. They were also still selling the contaminated Interval Compost Potting Soil in bags (marked down) after the recall. Tried to return those and was told "We can't take that, it's hazardous waste." Yeah, hazardous waste that YOU SOLD ME as potting soil! YMMV, but be warned....their customer service is lacking.

Gardener’s Supply Company provides high quality gardening items. And I’ve been pleased with all my purchases. This past year and ongoing (10/2021) supply chain shortages have been rampant. It’s been tough for every industry. After a long wait I did receive my trellis. I was disappointed that a part was missing and reported this. I was sent a replacement immediately. This small company is employee owned and has great customer service. Products are made to last. They stand behind what they sell. I recommend them for your gardening needs.

After two months, our two 2'x8' planter boxes finally arrived (one month late). The 1x6 cedar boards shown in the assembly video were replaced by 1x4 cedar boards with a 1x6 pine filler board. Unfortunately there is still a 3 3/4" gap which will necessitate a trip to the lumber company for a piece of cedar to fill these remaining gaps in both boxes. Nearly one fourth of the cedar boards were cracked and split. No one would buy these at a lumber company or at Menards/Lowes/Home Depot. Our 40 strawberry plants waiting for planting on the promised April 26 initial delivery date died off until only eight remain. This was the most aggravating mail-order experience I've ever had. And paying Gardner's Supply's prices versus my local Tractor Supply or Farm and Fleet cost $600.00 more for "made in the USA." Once burned, twice shy.

I've spent a lot of time and money at this store over the past two and half years and it is consistently hit and miss. The good first. There is a good selection of plants and products consistently. Personally, the location is the best part of everything about this store. The small public gardens with the little arbor, the large outdoor space filled with plants in the summer, seats tucked here and there, and the gardens connected to the Intervale pond with the large willow tree next to the tree lined walkway next to the barn, and then the trails leading off along the Winooski River. An absolute favorite place to wander, sit, or exercise. During the winter, going into the greenhouse area indoors to simply be around the plants is a relief to have nearby when I am missing the sun through leaves so much! The staff has usually been helpful for the most part, though also often uninformed, or rapidly impatient with questions, which stands in contrast to the Managers claim that they only hire "people with a Masters in Botany" for 15 dollars an hour or less? I'm pretty sure they don't and if they do, maybe pay them more so they are willing to share their "extensive" knowledge and have the time for questions, much less know what is in stock, or not. The same Manager refused a return of a Benjamin Ficus tree I purchased, even though later when reviewing the return policy, I could have returned it. That begins the less good. Many plants in the indoor greenhouse that are part of the base stock are not well taken care of and haphazardly arranged, often dusty and/or slowly dying. The store clearly relies on it's seasonal burst of business, but consistent management will keep loyal customers. I've taken to buying plants elsewhere now for the most part or ordering them online as, once considering my own skills fairly in caring for them, the plants I purchase there don't tend to thrive. I also suspect if not intentional mis-pricing, then simply a failure to pay attention to pricing and mis-labeling in small and rather sneaky ways. I will continue to shop here, but since the competition is fierce for local business compared to national, there's what could be improved on that would maintain loyal business easily IMO, so three stars is it for now.

For local pickup, they may be OK based upon the reviews on here, but stay away from ordering online with them. I had unbelievably poor service from this company. I ordered a planter box in April, which it said would be delivered in May. In May, I emailed them and they said it will ship later than expected, with a new date of 6/25. On 6/27 I emailed them for an update, to which they replied "your order should ship on 7/2 at the latest". Of course, by now the planter wouldn't be much good for this year, but I was patient and figured I can get it in place and I'll be set up for next year. Still nothing happened. On 8/5, I e-mailed them again and they said it should "ship out by the end of the week or early next week". Guess what- still nothing. E-mail again on 8/25 and got this totally ridiculous response- "unfortunately, the planter is on back order until 12/25" "we apologize for the delay". WOW- just WOW...

I ordered a garden box on April 19. It has been listed as backordered on 4 different dates now. Every time a date is passed the backorder date is moved out further. It is now May 18, and it still hasn't shipped. I tried emailing to cancel the order but it never was canceled. I tried calling but was told the wait time was 45 minutes. Gardeners Supply is absolutely terrible. I ordered garden beds back in April that were supposedly in stock. It took them over a month to ship and every time I tried to call I got no answer. Apparently they shipped 1 of the beds without receiving payment. 7 months later they started sending me letters and threating to send my account to collections over $115. When I called to discuss the matter with customer service, the agent was extremely rude. When I tried to give him my credit card he didn't like the feedback I gave him and he tried to tell me that I was refusing to pay. DO NOT ORDER ANYTHING FROM GARDENERS.

The staff aren’t very friendly, they aren’t very helpful, there’s not as much of a selection (which is understandable due to the size) but during the winter the place is tiny. The products i bought online from GSC were great. But GSC? Horrible! I accidentally ordered 4 instead of the 2 I wanted on the GSC web site. I called customer service a total of 4 times to try to cancel the order. Each call had me on hold between 90 and 120 minutes, and three of these calls were dropped before i ever spoke to someone. When I finally got through to someone they told me the order could not be cancelled. They said I'd have to take delivery of the order and then return the portion i did not want. They advised that I return the items to one of their stores to "expediate" the process. The order arrived 6 weeks later, and I drove to Hadley ( two hour drive each way from Boston) to return the items in person. The folks in the store were incredibly nice, but guess what? They could not refund my money themselves: they had to call the same number I had been calling to get authorized to do a refund. They ( and I ) finally gave up waiting on hold, and told me they would take the products. They told me to expect my refund the next day. Guess what? 10 days later, and still no refund! I wrote GSC about this and they told me they could not refund the money until the items were shipped back to Vermont... That was 7 days ago and still nothing. I get that Covid has made business difficult. I get it and have bent over backwards to be patient and understanding every step of the way. In the end, I've spent at least 6 hours on phone calls, 4 hours driving the the store, all to return an item I tried to cancel before it was delivered. And I'm still out over $300.00 after all this this! This is no way to run a business and no way to treat customers. I won't be back.

Placed an order in January. One of three items showed up in the beginning of March. Now the end of March, and I have not received my other items. It is next to impossible to get a hold of an actual human to discuss the issue with. Avoid ordering from them online.

Susan, at the Burlington store, could not have been more helpful. I just planted a large bed of lowbush blueberries and she helped me purchase the pieces for the perfect drip irrigation system. Her enthusiasm for my project made it an extra pleasure to shop there.

Gardeners is an establishment in Burlington but unfortunately that doesn’t always mean it’s the best option. This is a company that’s not adapting very well to the tough times. Very difficult to order online (horribly dated site, poor search capabilities and clunky ordering)! Have been waiting on a bulk topsoil and mulch order for 2 weeks and just got a call from them to a schedule delivery in 3 weeks! Online timeline says 5-10 days for delivery after ordering. Misleading! Very poor communication that didn’t provide any up front communication that orders were delayed. Service reps are rude on the phone and sound just as frustrated as I am. Canceled our order and get mulch and compost from Claussen’s in Colchester instead (they are lovely) and that’s where we will be going in the future for all our gardening needs.

Nice products. A little pricey so I always leave wishing I could buy more cool things than I can afford. Good place to get Christmas gifts and stocking stuffers and cool little chatchkes!

Terrible customer service, shop somewhere else if you can. I purchased a greenhouse early May and almost 3 weeks later i received part of the shipment. I wrote to their customer service to request the missing parts, but until now, after 6 mails I still not received anything. In fact, after my 3 reminder, they completely stopped responding to my emails. The only thing that happened in a timely was Gardener's charging my credit card for almost $2K. They also had this greenhouse on Amazon but i choose to purchase it through Gardener's to support an independent company, what a mistake and such a scam!
