I hired Valley Tree Services (aka Coburn Tree Services) to remove a large, dead tree in my backyard after seeing their advertisement on Facebook. I got two other quotes, and theirs was the most competitive, so I awarded the contract to them. They assured me that they had insurance, and we agreed upon all of the labour required to complete the job.
They were set to come and do the work on Sunday, January 2nd, but did not show up. They finally came on Tuesday, January 4th.
I received a concerning message that our tree had 'clipped our shed' at 4:54pm on Tuesday. When I arrived home, I found their work trailer in my driveway, over half of the tree still standing, a huge tree trunk in the back yard, and my shed was not clipped, it was destroyed; they were nowhere to be seen. My patio set, bird bath, all of my garden ornaments were smashed and broken. My shed roof was caved in with holes in it, beams snapped in half, the porch was broken, windows were blown out, and there was glass from both my patio table and shed windows all over my lawn. Dollies and wheelbarrows full of branches lay akimbo all over my yard. It looks like a war zone.
I asked for him to start an insurance claim. He kept assuring me that HE could fix the shed. I insisted on insurance as the damage is EXTENSIVE and the contents of my shed are likely damaged as well. When I woke up on Wednesday, I looked out the window, and he had come either in the middle of the night, or first thing in the morning and snuck off with his trailer and dolly. Presumably he left his wheelbarrows behind because my husband's car was blocking the passageway that was wide enough to remove them from my property.
I messaged him, holding out some small hope that he had done a dump run and would come back to finish the job. However, he did not come back to finish the job or to secure my shed with a tarp, despite me asking him to. I purchased a tarp and had my handyman secure my shed's roof, as rain was pouring onto my belongings, including my family's antique wooden furniture. I called my insurance company and started proceedings; they were VERY interested in the fact that he refused to start a claim with his insurance.
He has since asked AGAIN to fix the shed. He refuses to contact his 'insurance company'. He did not come back this morning to continue work. He has attempted to play to my sympathies by telling me about his 'personal tragedies' and that he's just 'a guy trying to make a buck'. He has also indicated that the problem with the job lies in my court - that the tree was dead/complicated (he knew this ahead of time), that he's done more work than was quoted on (he signed up for the job), etc.
Our agreement was simple: Take the tree down to a two inch stump, take a small second tree down, remove all wood. Instead I have a HUGE felled tree in my yard, a smashed up shed, a destroyed yard, and a complicated insurance claim. I'm relieved nothing else was damaged, but cannot warn consumers enough from using his services. I have hired another company to finish the job.
His name is Jason Coburn. Google him. Google him and the word Hope. Google him and the word Nanaimo. He is currently operating under Valley Tree Services to hide from his one bad review that he has received here already. Do your research; I was fooled by his name, which is alarmingly close to Fraser Valley Tree Services - a reputable company who I believed I was hiring due to his near appropriation of their name.
