I have previously had good experiences at Potters, until today. Last summer, I was told that their used pots at the back are free to take. I went a couple times last summer to get pots and would always buy other supplies at the same time. Even though their soil is more expensive than at Canadian tire or Home Depot, I always bought from them because I appreciated that they offered free pots and I prefer to support local business. Today, I went to get a few pots and some potting soil. I checked with an employee (as I always have) before heading to the back to grab the pots. I put them in my car before heading inside to get soil. When I went to pay, a man (who I believe is the owner) told the cashier to charge me for three pots. The way he said it made it sound like I was trying to steal them. I told him that I was not aware that they now charge for pots and that I did check with an employee before getting them, I felt like I had to defend myself. His response was rude and not understanding at all. It was just a bizarre interaction that left me feeling embarrassed. I most definitely was not trying to sneak the pots in my car without telling anyone. The situation could have been much different if he had told me directly “oh by the way, we now charge for pots” or something to that effect when I walked past him to put them in my car. To be clear, I am not upset that they charge for the pots, but rather with the way I was treated. Next time I need soil or other supplies, I will take my business elsewhere.
