Tim from Hatchet and Seed taught a workshop on Holistic Sprays in the Banfield Community Orchard. His presentation was refreshing and very well organized. The participants appreciated the examples of products to use, as well as a hands-on opportunity to apply a beneficial soil spray.

Tim and Tayler from Hatchet and Seed installed a much needed irrigation system to my urban farm. They were professional, efficient, and absolutely lovely to work with. My garden is quite elaborate (lots of nooks and crannies) yet they made me feel like the installation was easy and that nothing was impossible.

Yesterday I attended their Kitchen Garden: Join the Revolution! Workshop, located at their beautiful home base in Vic West. The knowledge, skill and attention they put into their work is abundantly clear! What really impressed me is their attitude towards continuously learning new things and sharing with honesty where they've learned from their own mistakes. Having that said, they are extremely knowledgeable abut compost systems, irrigation, wicking beds (this wow'ed me!) and drainage for flooding. Their focus on staying current with what food and social trends are happening in the community is a breath of fresh air. If you're on the fence about attending one of their workshops or hiring them for home garden design, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

We can't say enough good things about Tayler and Tim at Hatchet and Seed. They are on the cutting edge of eco-design, incorporating into their designs all that we currently know about supporting and regenerating soil health. They helped design and establish our silvopasture field and completely designed (and mostly installed) a brilliant irrigation system perfect for our small farm. They listened to and were sensitive to our needs and happy to work around our parameters. Extremely knowledgeable, they were able to take our mostly unformed ideas, refine and sharpen them, and then bring them to life. They are very hard working and took meticulous care to make sure everything was done to the highest standard. I would not hesitate to recommend Hatchet and Seed for a project big or small. We look forward to working with them again as our farm progresses!

Hatchet and Seed has some great classes. I learned a lot and their garden is absolutely stunning.

The Hatchet & Seed crew took our front and back yards from dull, weedy, dead grass dirt squares to flourishing, self-sustaining habitat for birds, bees, butterflies—and humans. We now have a productive berry patch amid a beautiful edible landscape, including raised beds, fruit trees, lemon grass and myriad other wonders. The entire crew was knowledgeable, friendly, adaptable, and super hardworking, an absolute pleasure to have around. The "hatchet" part of the landscape, in the form of rustic cedar log edges and driftwood accents, is beautiful and cleverly done. The work on the stone wall was creative and beautiful. We second the other reviewer who comments on the tidiness of the work site. We noticed and appreciated it every time.

After a couple of years of building our veggie garden on our own we decided we wanted help to maximize our growing space, reduce work in keeping it up and make it look better. Hatchet and Seed did just that. Their design helped us significantly increase our growing space and has served us lots of time so we can focus on the parts of gardening that we enjoy. Plus it looks great and we love spending time in our new garden. Thanks!

Hachet and seed bulit us some raised beds at The Compost Education Centre and they look fantastic. The staff were amazingly communicative and clear with plans and expectations. Taylor has also taught workshops at The Compost Education Centre that were received very well. Their ethos is fantastic focusing on beautiful organic edible landscaping.

After residing at our sloping rural property for two soggy wet winters and long dry summers and an unreliable irrigation system expensive to maintain, we realized we need to better manage the use and flow of water on our property. We want to plan for more sustainability with ease of maintenance with attractive native plantings, as well as edible crops that will survive climate change. We also were planning to expand our vegetable and fruit growing area and get rid of the overgrowth of invasive blackberry and ivy plants beside the existing garden. Our neighbours highly recommended Tayler and Solara of Hatchet and Seed Edible Landscape Designers and Builders to be the permaculture landscaping experts we needed to consult, having had them install a new edible landscape for them five years ago that is now flourishing with a diverse variety of fruit and vegetables. After having Solara and Tayler come for a couple of initial visits to listen to what we want and to suggest solutions, we have now had them come last August and September to not only efficiently complete clearing the land ready to landscape, but also design and install an attractive winding waterway descending through the sloping garden to successfully slow the flow and seepage of rainwater into collecting pools and into buried old logs to retain the water where needed to grow blueberry plants. The artful placement of recycled wood from a dead tree trunk, driftwood and several sizes of rocks complement the plantings of native species of plants along the banks beside and in the waterway. We are delighted with how this new waterway is now working, and look forward with anticipation to completing planting more this coming spring. We have found that Tayler and his assistant Tim have listened well to what we want, made some great suggestions, welcomed our feedback and requests, helped us with enthusiasm to accomplish in a short time what we could not do without them, while agreeing to leave for us to complete what we can manage on our own to keep our costs manageable. They have useful contacts and resources in the nearby community for accessing supplies and native plants, and provided the energetic hardworking woman and manpower of their crew to get the job done quickly and efficiently. They obviously enjoy the creativity of what they do, along with applying the science of the extensive horticultural training and experience they practice and share. This has inspired us to have more fun and enjoyment as we continue to develop and nurture our landscape with confidence for a more sustainable future that will nurture us in return.

We are so happy with the garden space that Hatchet & Seed designed and installed for us. Tayler & Tim were fantastic to work with! They took my initial ideas and designed a space that was even better than I had imagined. They were knowledgeable, professional, efficient, always willing to answer questions and make tweaks as we went. We now have a beautiful backyard garden space and are looking forward to expanding with a phase two in the future. We would highly recommend Hatchet & Seed!

On behalf of Pollinator Partnership Canada, we would like to extend our gratitude to Hatchet & Seed for graciously lending in-kind hours and support for our soon to be installed pollinator habitat project at Wark Street Commons community garden. Tim has been a crucial component of the project, adding insights to the design and planting plan, as well as providing logistical support. Thank-you!

Tayler and crew built some beautiful raised beds out of yellow cedar, brought in the soil, installed trickle irrigation (which was so useful during the "heat dome" of 2021), and delivered and spread the wood chip mulch in the pathways. The whole project completely transformed my back yard! I was very pleased with the results, and highly recommend them!

Libbi Smith

Taylor and Tim are amazing! They carefully removed some dead limbs off our ancient plum tree and have given it a new lease on life. It looks so much better! I would highly recommend them!

Louise Oborne

For the past five years, Hatchet & Seed has been nurturing our fruit trees. We appreciate Tayler's expertise and the hard work he and Tim perform cheerfully and professionally. Of great importance to us, is the ongoing relationship Hatchet & Seed has with our garden.

Brenda Williams

We have thoroughly enjoyed our entire experience with Hatchet and Seed; everything from planning our edible landscape garden to enjoying the "fruit" of the labour. Tayler's response to our ideas was always..."That's doable". We learned so much about gardens and ecosystems in the process and enjoy our gardens every single day. Not only did Hatchet and Seed provide a result that exceeded our expectations, but they have been a total pleasure to work with.

Joy Student

Tyler and crew installed a rain garden to absorb excess water that usually floods our garden in winter. It really got put to the test with the atmospheric river rains of Nov/ 21 plus the snow in Dec. It worked wonderfully, and continues to look great in all seasons. A good investment assisted by their extensive knowledge and competence.

Chelsea Clark

Tayler is so knowledgable and experienced at his art. He will without a doubt create a yard you can be proud of and teach you rather than do it for you, or just do it for you! I was a student of his and have nothing but good to say about his professionalism, knowledge and friendly attitude.

Michael Metcalfe

Hatchet and Seed were amazing. I highly recommend them. They were punctual, efficient and very hard working. They were receptive to our ideas, and were able to introduce some great concepts. They were really professional and kept to our vision.

Greg Firestone

Taylor and Solara of Hatchet and seed have been beyond amazing in helping us take our waterfront property to an eden of edible plants and more. They have worked together with our family to design and install all the features of our garden. They have created a giant raised bed veggie garden, built a beautiful water feature, planted multiple fruit trees and medicinal plants . . .Taylor and Solara have always been very fair with their billing. Over the years that we have known them I feel they have set a new standard in permaculture gardening. They have always listened to our ideas and worked closely with our family to create our dream garden. I would highly recommend them for any landscape job!

Over the past 6 months Hatchet & Seed has helped us transform our grassy yard into a charming food growing space. We initially contacted Hatchet & Seed for a consultation to help us understand how to take better advantage of our yard and grow more food. Based on the discussion, they developed a plan to build a Garden Room with raised beds and built-in privacy. It produced a bounty of food in its first summer and we spend so much time there with 2 little kids enjoying the space. This fall we asked Hatchet & Seed to help design and build more raised garden beds, providing more space for annual crops, and a border of perennial berries. Their work has changed how we use and enjoy our yard. We now love being in our yard and we’re excited to see how it continues to grow and produce delicious food for our family. We still have lots of work to do and no doubt we’ll consult with Hatchet & Seed again to continue transforming our yard. They are an experienced and knowledgeable team and we would highly recommend them for anyone looking to make their landscape more edible and beautiful.

We worked with Hatched and Seed to begin transforming our yard. Our starting point was to increase our ability to grow food and to integrate pollinators and more native plants into the landscape. At our first consultation Tayler asked questions that solidified the overall vision, expanded our thinking, and helped frame the design. Tayler, Tim and the team created new beds and hardscaping in our front yard – the only space with six hours of sunshine – to support fruit trees; vegetables and pollinators. They encouraged and considered our input throughout the process and really took the time to ‘get things right’. We love the results and are looking forward to the first season for these gardens and to future work with Hatchet and Seed.

John McClarnon

We are thoroughly satisfied with the garden project completed for us by the Hatchet & Seed crew. The ferro cement beds were a perfect solution for our property. In addition to being functional, the completed work looks great and blends in nicely with the landscape. Communication, quality of work, attention to detail, craftsmanship and tidiness of the work site were all excellent. Highly recommended!

David Grove

The professional skill and dedication Hatchet and Seed have applied to our once barren, residential lot has transformed this property and our lives. Over five years they have guided us into a living world of: building soil, nurturing growth, peaceful enjoyment, and glorious harvests. Food for the Body and Soul!
