I only get it a 4 star rating because they do not price match and sometimes the prices for certain items are more expensive. However their selection of groceries are broad.

A few good people came from Zellers but I can't stay because of one person. Mediocrity is the new standard. No one has to do a decent job anymore because they can just tell you to go somewhere else. Such is the case here. More mistakes than I can count on one hand and always trying to blame the customer. I hit my breaking point with these people. I've changed pharmacies but I definitely have to leave a review. It was just maddening being their customer.

Lots of inventory to choose from, nice store. Fairly expensive though, only purchase when things are onsale otherwise I shop at No frills in Brighton which has a majority of the same items/brand for a fraction of the cost.

People call this supermarket, "Independent! " There is a large variety of food sold in this supermarket and is one of the most popular supermarkets in Trenton! Very close to the Canadian Airforce Base, many soldiers in uniform shop at this supetmarket! Their seafood is fresh and is sometimes cheap when specials are offered! The meat department at time offer great specials on their meats! The produce is fresh and well organized! All kinds of delicious fresh cakes, pies and pastries are sold at this location! There is a large variety of canned foods! The staff are the best trained people and they are very nice to their customers! I enjoy shopping at this supermarket!

Amazing customer service!!!! We just moved from Yellowknife and I had to stock up... Took my 3 month old with me. What could have been a disaster turned into an amazing experience. I had two huge grocery cart full and the cashier scanned and bagged my first one while I continued to shop and put it on hold until I was ready. I also had someone help me take all three carts out to the truck.

While the groceries are more expensive here than other stores, the selection and quality of the fresh food is fantastic. Also, if you have dietary restrictions (no gluten or dairy for example) they have a large selection of alternatives which is nice. The staff are friendly and helpful and the store is clean and easily accessible. The aisles are also nice and wide so if we are ever able to travel in multiple directions down aisles again, you won't be crashing into anyone.

Went to smileys with my daughter and family friend.after standing in a lineup in the heat we were told to enter.upon entering we were asked if we read both signs on each side of us we said yes he squeezed sanitizer on each of our hands.upon getting ready to enter the store he loiks at me and says only 2 allowed in the store and i was made to sit out in the heat.we left and spent our money elsewhere.im a recovering stroke patient and a senior.we wont go back ever

The food here is so expensive but not as great as Metro. The only advantage they have is the health food section. No other grocery store in Trenton offers as much health food choices. Their ready made food is total crap though all deep fried or sad looking; over priced salads with crappy ingredients. Poorly made sandwiches. Their deli counter has a bad selection and per gram everything cost twice as much as metro. Produce is expensive just go to Walmart for similar quality. I don't buy much processed food so I'm not sure about the choices in many of the isles.

Just went and they did not scan pc points card (phone app). So I asked them to refund my visa then do order again to do my points. The manager that said she worked there for 30 years said that I would not get points anyways because only get points on offer. As far as I know and if you check online you get 10 pts for every dollar you spend. Will not shop there again as after about 10 to 15 minutes I gave up.

They have a coin operated water refill station but no way to get change for said station unless you buy something. If you are only going to have a coin operated water refill then you should have a change machine or the cashier's should be able to change bills for you WITHOUT a purchase

We were only going to pick up a few things anyways but we walked out with only two items. It is worth the drive to Belleville to go to No Frills. Even with the cost of gas... you will save money.

Used to be a great store. Standards have slipped a lot. The cleanliness isn't there anymore. Store made products are not what they used to be. Not many times sale items are in full quantity and available from the beginning to the end of the sale. As someone who has shopped there many times over the years - and yes I know it is the same at all the stores - prices have really gone up. The difference with some other stores I shop at and this one is that I'm not getting my money's worth from it. Produce is not good at all for the most part. The staff used to be amazing. There are some good ones there now but there are many who are not at all friendly. Walking around like storm clouds. It makes me sad to see how far down this once great store has slipped

I like the PC brand but for some reason this store is literally ALWAYS out of chicken. Last 4 times I was there! (Last week no fresh meat at all except pork chops, how is that even possible?) And sometimes the vegetables aren't fresh...maybe I'm going on the wrong days. I also bought a mayo jar from them and it was expired. I went back to the store to get another and literally the brand I get were all expired on the shelf, every last bottle. Gross.

Stopped here quickly for some food for a road trip. They happened to have a sale on which is always great. I always enjoy going to independent for shopping because you don't get the "Wal-Mart" type of crowd if you know what I mean. Independent seems to be a bit fancier and takes pride in their stores. Sometimes they are a tad more expensive than other stores, but other than that love coming here and recommend it to others. I also love the Joe Fresh section and the small section to get toys and outdoor living.

I wish I could specifically write a review for the pharmacy, but this is as close as I can get so this is where I'll review. Before I wrote reviews for Google (a few years ago) we left this pharmacy when we caught them over-charging us for a prescription that Walmart delivered at literally 1/10th the price. Then, when I told them WHY I was leaving them, they actually called Walmart to curse them out. I was stunned when the employee at Walmart told me this; but whatever. Fast forward all these years later, and I have a reoccuring sinus infection (for which I have a prescription nasal steroid, so yes, I am under counsel of a medical professional). I have come here twice ever to purchase JUST decongestants - that is, something to unclog my sinuses WITHOUT EXTRA PAINKILLERS. Every time, the absolutely straight-up rude and ignorant "pharmacist" asks me to run down the prescriptions I am on (this time, in front of another customer, which was relentlessly embarrassing) and completely inconsiderate) , then he turns me down based on a random prescription I confess to taking being under the auspices that it is a "conflict," however, he directs me to buy the stuff with painkillers off the shelf if I want a decongestant. So, there's a supposed conflict, but it's okay to have that conflict with the more expensive NSAID versions. I don't want to take painkillers as I am not in substantial pain. I can't breathe. Why on Earth would I treat a symptom that doesn't exist? I suspect that there's a profit consideration involved, as decongestants are dirt cheap, but considerably more expensive are the added NSAIDs off of the shelf. Anyone who works in wholesale of pharmaceuticals knows exactly what I mean when I refer to the profit margin. I am of the honest belief that this guy's ignorant attitude is based on the fact that he either thinks I'm a junkie or wants to make more money off of me. Now, I've only purchased decongestants probably four times in my life, but haven't ever had a problem anywhere else (Walmart, Rexall or Canada Drug Mart). So, as a grocery store, Independent is more convenient locationally to me, however, considerably more expensive. Add to that my complete inability to use their pharmacy for anything because it's run by a staff that's less competent than certain presidents and more unpleasant to talk to than brushing your teeth with a razor blade, and I would say don't bother coming here. I would rather travel literally anywhere else and be treated with dignity.

I shop here at least twice a week and I've noticed the some of the produce going bad for example the black plums the other day were shrivelling up and very soft, I have also bought the in store made salad before it's due date and when I opened it that same night it was no good the lettuce was wilted and just yesterday I bought a 10lb bag of potatoes and the whole bag had black spots all through the potatoes I wish I could post pictures ????

Clean. Definately not your discount grocery store. Staff is meh. They are there and do their job but no one seems happy to be there. No smiles. Ready to go meals are super hit and miss. Wedges are often really yuckie. Express purchases have been just okay. I specifically requested a call regarding substitutions and never got one. The fresh meat, veggies and fruit items picked were similar to what I would pick for the most part. Strawberries went straight to the trash.

Decent organic and natural section, however, I was taken aback to see them advertise their beef is corn fed like that was a good thing. I'm removing a star, not because of Mr Smylie's particular store, but because of the response I got to this post from loblaws (they own the independent line of stores). Rather than asking me why I was so disappointed they tried to sweep it under the rug by saying: "As Canada’s largest grocery retailer, we are dedicated to offering our customers healthy, safe, high quality foods at great value. Both of our corn fed beef and PC Free beef products offer a great cut of meat. We encourage our customers to try both and decide which one they prefer." Both are corn fed, both are unnatural. We the customers are becoming more educated to your marketing, we the customers are demanding better products. Don't pee on our legs and tell us it's raining.

Unacceptable experience on Monday for my mother. When purchasing a large package of ground beef, she places it on the conveyor belt only for it to get stuck and rip the package open. When my mother asked if she could go get a new one, the lady at the till replied that the bags were clean and proceeded to put the meat vertically into the bag causing a good amount of it to spill into the bag. With people behind her, my mother was disappointed but didn't want to hold up the line. This is unacceptable customer service from anyone. She has been a long time shopper at Smylies Independent and knows the owner from his generous contributions in the community in the past, but I cannot believe this is the standard of customer service for some of the employees. I attached a photo of it when it got home...and while yes she was able to move it into a freezer bag, she is still very frustrated with her experience.

Just got a prescription refill but I like they are definitely being very stern on face maks and putting stay 6 feet back on the back of the t-shirts the staff wear. Bought a whole chicken for Sunday supper with company upon opening it knew right away it was bad. Took it back on Monday and she called the meat manager (Steve) he authorized a refund and said there were no managers in the store today took my phone number and said he would call me bc I came from Brighton and second time this happened and yes deserved more than a refund. Here it is 2 1\2 weeks later and no phone call. Will never shop there again. If u buy chicken there and going to freeze it check it first!!!!

Owner of Smylie's was at the door monitoring people coming in and he refused to let me in. His reason was that he was only allowing one person per family enter however my sister brought me to the store as my car broke down yesterday and we needed to shop for our own respective families. He said he was at capacity, although I was willing to wait like everyone one else but he insisted he wouldn't let me in! What he did was unjust, unfair. So as a single mom, can I not go grocery shopping without calling a babysitter?!

The store is clean, but I have some issues. If I buy one more item - allegedly from their bakery - that is stale, even though the date indicates it should be OK for a few more days, then I will simply not buy from that department. Just because it says packaged on ____, don't assume that was the date it was made. Also, their pies are put out on the floor frozen, not fresh. Come on, you can do better!
