As you can see it has an average rating is practically the highest, and it's based on a large number of opinions, so we can think that the score is very accurate. If many people have bothered to leave their opinion when they are happy, it works.
As you know, we do not usually bother to put scores when these are correct and we usually do it only if we have had a problem or incidence...
This Fruit Store belongs to the category of Greengrocer.
Such a great atmosphere and some pretty interesting items stocked you may not find elsewhere. Produce and meat has great selection and is super reasonably priced - and the deli items are delicious. Such a great place!
We are from out of town but heard the first of the new potatoes were in so we stopped at the store. We were also looking for bedding out plants, some veggies to plant as well as some assorted potted plants. We met Judith in that department and she is be far the most knowledgeable gardener we have met on the island She was so helpful we loaded up our car with product she helped us with. An amazing lady and we are so thankful to have her help us out. Oh the new potatoes were sooo nummy thanks Root Celler
Great quality and competitive pricing. Excellent organic shopping.
Always a pleasant experience, great selection of fresh, local foods :)
Great focus on local foods, and also great prices on produce. Don't forget the deli either
If you want to shop local, this is the place. Nobody else stocks local produce the way these guys do. Unlike many other stores, this doesn't mean that it's more expensive either. They are priced well or at least competitivley on almost everything. Even if it's out of your way, The Root Cellar if worth the drive.
Huge collection of local products like vegetables, fruits, baked goods. Meat and fish are also available. Convenient parking lot with great location.
Root Cellar is an amazing place to visit during the summer. There is so much super fresh produce to choose from and the prices are amazing. Super high quality produce too. If you want as fresh as possible vegetables without going to the actual farm this is the place to go.
Great quality, alot of their items are made/grown locally!
Laughably unusual owners. Good organic selection, but occasional, very immature staff. Which strip the entire experience of its value. A lot of staff are perfectly fine, but my daughter had a very bad experience in there when their cashiers were laughing at her for who-knows-what reason, as she was in line the cashiers whispered an entire conversation to each other while staring at her and laughing. This is the result of extremely terrible owners of the company (as I have heard only bad things about them from former employees) They only hire pretty young girls who sometimes act 7 but are probably still in high school, this is my personal experience. They might sometimes have good live music, other times the music is just somber and make it really hard to shop in there without it feeling even more toxic than it already is. Also my son says that their soft serve organic ice cream would do better if the staff working there were not so awkward and condescending.
Awesome fresh veggies and good selection of isl raised meats. Expensive but worth it!!!
Always love shopping here. Fresh as can be and the varieties are top notch. From cheese to meat and all things in between .
Pretty expensive and fruit and vegetables like the cucumbers are. sometimes very soft.
The Coffee Project has been an oasis for me during COVID times. Love that place, thanks for being open folks!
Great place for veggies and fruit, their garden centre really good as well
Great value and quality and I love buying groceries at The Root Celler. Only negative thing is that they often over charge and I end up paying extra couple dollars. ( It happened to me twice past 1-1.5 month) I should have checked receipt right away but I feel bad to take my time as there is always long queue. It is my fault but it seems this happens often at least to me. I will make sure there is no mistake from now on but it would be nice if they can also make sure they count correctly. Other than that this is my favorite place to shop!
Lots of local and artisinal food related products from the Island and Bc-sourced. Overall, good quality and fresh. As expected, prices are generally a tad higher though they have some decent sales. I like the outdoor garden plant area in spring when its well stocked.
This is one of my favorite places to get fresh local produce. They always have a great high quality selection of fruits and vegetables, assorted meat cuts, baked goods, etc. Recently they added a coffee and bakery section which enhances it further. The staff are always pleasant and happy to help out.
Great grocery store for local produce, meats and deli products. As close as you’ll get to shopping directly at a farmers stand.
I love this grocery store! I'll often find better prices than big chain grocery stores on both organic and non-organic produce. Definitely buy your fresh fruit and veggies here. Quick and friendly cashier's and often live music, which always improves my shopping experience.
Fantastic place
Enjoying shopping here. Great service and food.
I suggest buying GT's cosmic cranberry kombucha, It's sublime ????????
Great place for local produce
Great spot for local veggies and fruit.
Great selection of local produce and garden plants.
I love this place! Always has great fruit and veg (and lots of locally sourced product when available!). Quality is always top notch and I will usually buy starter plants here for my home garden as well. They have a great selection of pumpkins during Halloween and though I don't frequent it they've also got a wonderful looking deli/butcher section as well.
The selection of produce cannot be beat. Their non-produce is comparatively pricey. On one recent trip, I was blown away from a single portion of gluten free pizza dough going for $11.95.
Accessible, competitive prices, great service. Come for the food, stay for the community. It's like shopping at Costco whereby you spend more than you intended buying fabulous stuff for your kitchen and garden.
We moved away from Victoria for 5 years and we were looking forward to buying our produce once again now we are back as in the past we bought all our produce here for many years. It was a shock to us how much the prices have changed in comparison to other retailers so It is no longer worth it for us to make the trip. Most of the produce is not local and even the stuff that is can be found cheaper at grocery stores. This is very sad. On the positive the atmosphere is nice and they do have a good selection.
If I could live at a fruit/vegetable market, this is where I'd move. Large variety of fruits and vegetables + wonderful prepared foods + friendly staff = 10/10 experience.
Fresh veggies. Good deli. Can be a bit pricey. But good fresh food.
The amazing selection of fresh produce is reason enough to drive a long way for the Root Cellar. And then there's the butcher quality meat (much of it from Glenwood Meats), the specialty prepared foods you can't find anywhere else, the garden centre, the coffee shop and the friendly, efficient service. And all wheelchair accessible. The Root Cellar is a treasure.
So much fun to see food displayed in an inspiring way. Too many grocery stores have such a blend mass produced look... this is worth a stop for sure... they have a fantastic butcher counter, veggies galore including chanterelles, and nice baked goods. Just GO!!
The hippest place to get vegetables and other groceries. A banjo playing band during the holiday season made the crazy busy place enjoyable on a Saturday visit.
Great selection! Store set up well for Covid, staff very pleasant and helpful. Lots of free parking. Would have given 5 stars but prices are a little high.
I ran in to grab some Green Sauce today & had a very good experience with the cashier (whom was wearing beautiful gem eye make-up). Because of her kindness I will be definitely be returning to shop at The Root Cellar! thank you miss :)
Amamazing place great service and very fast at the till even though the line was super long it took only about 3 to 4 min wait.
Awesome staff with an excellent selection of fresh, local and organic produce at great prices. They also sell flower and veggie starts for the garden.
Good service, really awesome produce and garden center. Whole place has a great vibe!
great experience for shopping - thankful for local foods and live music and the reduced section
An amazing variety of fruits, vegetables, the deli and everything else. Experienced the largest mangoes and apples we've seen. My mum's first visit was enjoyable and she unfortunately missed the out of season JackFruit:) An awesome visit!
Always has fresh, in-season produce. Layout and organization can be tricky, gotta watch for what's organic and what isn't!
The Root Cellar is an incredible store for everything from locally sourced meat and vegetables, to a voluminous assortment of fruit. Last but not least, enjoy coffee at their coffee bar.
Good selection of meats, fruits and veggies.
Love the deals on fresh, local veggies and fruits. The quality of the products are great!
A cool little market in Victoria
Great veggies. Great offering. Not the cheapest but the price quality relation is great. Awesome coffee and deli too!
Best produce in the area
Beautiful clean place, well priced fresh food and helpful friendly staff. Ever since moving here it's been our favorite place for an everyday shop or a chance for inspiration! Love you guys
so much enjoyment to be had out of cruising the aisles of beautifully curated products. i always come away feeling a little more educated on the food and plant world....now if only you could bring in some BC VQA wines (no pressure!).....? extra big thanks for the GREEN SAUCE Rootcellar - that stuff is decadent and hard to believe it vegan!
Albeit certain items are a touch pricey but lots fresh and lots of local prody
Large selection of quality meats, cheese and produce.
Favourite place for fresh food and groceries.
Expensive
Great fresh veggies and fruit at reasonable prices.
Fresh produce
Overpriced hippie food.
Very fresh organic produce. Friendly staff.
Very expensive!
Best produce in the city at the best prices. Great for local meats and cheeses as well!
Fresh local foodstuffs and smiles!
Great place. I needed help to find something and the employee dropped what she was doing and seemed to care that I got the right item.
Awesome produce and lots of good values!
Excellent coffee n other stuff
Wow! This place is a great addition to the Cook Street Village. Fresh fruit and vegetables at truly affordable prices. Great variety in other grocery products and very friendly staff.
I really recommend this store, fresh and high quality, lots of organic and locale products, and super competent, friendly service. I love it!
Great locally owned store. The only reason I didn't rate five stars is because their prices are on the high side
I was thrilled the Root Cellar opened this location closer to my home. Been there 3 times, and was disappointed in the obvious lack of freshness on the stock (first 2 times were pre-flood). Lots of moldy and wilting items, a shame really but hopefully they will be more mindful of this in the future and stock fresher goods/sort through.
I love the root cellar. Always check the discounted items in the back near the coffee shop.
Great grocery store, easily one of the best in Victoria. I love the selection of meat and great place to stock up on supplies for a charcuterie board!
When big box stores allow you to buy your tomatoes 2 aisles over from your printer paper, the Root Cellar has gone in exactly the opposite direction -- giving Victoria its only greengrocer. They provide a great range of produce (much of it local), at a reasonable price, year-round! They have a few extras such as eggs and milk, and a few locally sourced meats and cheeses, but really remain focused on providing good quality veg. Over the past couple of years, they have become increasingly popular (TIP: don't go on a weekend-day if you don't like crowds -- they are open til 8 every night). If you do a lot of canning and preserving, they also provide case-lot pricing on pretty much everything in stock.
Awesome selection, great prices, lots of produce, and efficient check out set up. It's always crazy busy in there, but they move people through check out swiftly. Also nice coffee shop set up and store made soft serve ice cream
Best grocer in town
Sign says "cheap" ...not really...but nice experience and great service!
Great place to buy fresh vegetables and a good selection of meat and dairy as well
Really Root Cellar? A Back-The-F%@K-Up T-shirt? My tipping point, on Day 222. After many years of happily going out of our way to shop in the wide-open-space here, I just can’t bring myself to go back. Do we really need to be told off. Still. Like that? It’s hard enough to make sense of people wearing masks on empty sidewalks, on bicycles, alone in cars, but most of us are doing our best to be good citizens despite plummeting spirits, the wear-and-tear of isolation, the high mental health toll. Root Cellar musings on “gratitude” notwithstanding, this feels like a failure—not only of kindness, but on some not-so-subtle level, of safety as well.
Great produce
My new favourite produce place. So much selection - so fresh - lots of unsprayed local veggies... And it's surprisingly affordable! WOO HOO!!
They keep getting more products very good selection.
Amazing people, lovely environment, fresh produce.
Absolutely love the selection here!!! Outstanding choice of fruits and veggies, organic and not. Lots of local stuff as well tropical. I don’t buy much else as it seems quiet pricy..... I could order a 900 degrees pizza cheaper than I could make it with the sauce and crust they sell but whatever ????♀️
Wonderful, high quality, local produce and meat products!
Amazing fresh produce!
Crowded and unsafe
Good local produce, good prices, good service. Nothing but good things to say.
Wednesdays are double add day!!
Great place to shop for veg.
Good to have a store where I can buy locally grown, quality and fresh food all year around. Thank you for your good service!
Great, fresh produce. Clean location, friendly staff and a wide selection of many items. Reasonably priced too.
This is a great place to get local produce and a fairly decent price. Go local people!
Awesome fresh vegetable choices and much more! Plus live music from a fine gentleman!
Just visiting. There's an excellent array of fruits veggies and deli stuff and coffee too and I even found red and green 'Simply Natural' Sriracha hot sauces
Always reasonable prices for excellent quality. Only place to find organic avocados
There is no place even close to being as reliable and fresh. The fruit and veg are amazing 100% of the time and when I need an easy ready dinner for my family, the asiago meatballs with green sauce are my go-to.
Great place to get good food -- this is where to go if you want fresh, local groceries that inspire you to cook!
Fresh products and polite staff.
A recent addition to the Cook Street Village ("replacing" Oxford Foods). Top notch produce, well organized, helpful staff. A pleasant shopping experience.
Top quality fruit and vegetables and as a bonus a nice coffee shop!!
Great place to shop. Excellent quality produce - vegetables, fruit, fish and meat.
Freshest produce, best prices, plenty of parking
Fantastic variety of fresh fruit and vegetables of good quality and at reasonable prices. They also stock a great range of interesting local produce. Love this place!
Local produce..... what else do you need to support local farms....
Those bulk bins are a little low to the ground, I can't imagine that working in the long run especially for the older folks. $10 hummus, cheap bell peppers. Its ok lol
Probably the most underrated flower shop in town. Absolutely amazing bouquets time after time of ordering through them. So good that you almost do not want to tell anyone. Meeting the owner, the staff (especially in the potting shed), absolutely everyone there is a delight. There is a reason why this store has such a loyal following that continues to grow.
Great local produce moderate prices.
The deli is great if your looking for an easy dinner that looks like you prepared for hours. They have a lot of items you can just throw on the hot grill and dinner is done.
This is the best produce in Victoria, hard stop. It is also a very reasonable price. Do you need more information? I drive down from Langford to use it.
Excellent local and farm fresh produce and meat. Our go too for the good stuff and special treats.
This is a very popular locally-owned store with a great selection of produce, some fancy meats, and a coffee bar. I find them a bit on the pricy side but they do sell high quality products. They make themselves out as a farm market, which I don't think they are, but they do carry a lot of locally grown produce in season.
Quite big for a market. Extremely clean and excellent quality of food. They have everything from flowers, plants to meat, fresh home grown produce and abundance of fruit. You must stop and take a gander.
Went today for their grand opening! Absolutely lovely store with 1hr free parking in the back. Great high quality products including many local items. No coffee bar at this one as it’s a tad smaller then their other location. Great prices on veg & fruit. Nice layout. So happy too see another location open up close to home.
It's always inspiring shopping here. Every vegetable and fruit under the sun and then some! The deli salads are amazing as well. Try the buffalo chicken pasta salad or the volcano rice salad for something different.
Best local produce and products. Love this place, now with discovery coffee.
The place to shop!
Great selection, locally sourced, good quality
Live music while you shop for your high quality produce at good prices.
Great place for fresh vegetables at reasonable prices.
Great store, mostly all local products. Decent pricing and knowledge friendly staff. Will definitely be back. Great selection of sauces and condiments that I was completely unaware of. And best thing, local or lower mainland.
Great selection of fresh produce, love love love. Coffee is great too.
I first visited the Root Cellar in Cook Street in the evening. The warm glow from all of their windows, and all that fresh produce beaming in the light was the most welcoming sight. I love the way their are so many touches that are reminiscent of the flagship Mackenzie store, but everything urbanized to give it a bit more sophistication and style. The offerings are similar at both stores, and all of my favourites are there from green sauce to rotisserie chicken, to butter chicken and peruvian chicken sausages, and a produce section like no other in the vicinity. I will be back time and time again.
Great parking, fresh produce, great grenade items at the deli. Lineups can be long but they move quickly!
Always a great experience.
Excellent place to shop for fresh fruit and vegetables
The best store for produce in the city! They have some of the best staff, and are always willing to help you at any time. They also have the best price on produce and support all of our local farms.
Absolutely terrible. Multiple instances of store staff... AND customers... not following covid safety procedures. Call out employees on their behaviour and only get excuses to justify their actions. Not ok. This was my second visit in less than a week. Neither experience leaves me feeling safe or confident that the staff (including deli manager) really respect covid safety measures or care about anyone's safety. We are considering reporting to island health.
Fruit and vegetables of all sorts. I also get my garden starts here too.
Notice the prices has gone up.
It seems like a smaller store than Oxfords, but baskets instead of carts would help keep the place more open. I'll pop in every once and a while and try to grab some local produce, as it's too expensive as a one-stop shop.
OXFORD FOODS FOREVER!!! If the new owners would please not change this iconic store, it serves the locals with exactly what we all want and need. Best prices and a great selection. Please don't drive us away by high priced items. Thank you. PS -- One star only for Root Cellar which is way overpriced for all food items, cannot afford, coming from a Cook St. senior citizen and longtime resident.
We shop here for most of our produce almost every week. Amazing selection of fresh fruits and veg! I've never been disappointed with the shelf life of their produce either. They have live music and the staff are always helpful!
My kids favorite trip of the week is to the "BEGGIE STORE!" Quality fresh and affordable produce, who could ask for anything more!
Love Root Cellar. Where else do you listen to live music and get local food for good prices? Always a pleasure.
wide assortment of wonderful mushrooms!! ????????????
Great prices and atmosphere
I was not happy with the veg selection. I can get a wider variety at Save-On-Foods
Great choice of fresh fruits and veggies, but on the pricey side
Best prices in town and the management is incredibly attractive
Great selection, friendly service, (mostly) great prices.
Great quality but very expensive.
Looks as good as the Mckinzie store. Lots of produce, bulk foods and meat. I saw a lot of vegan selections too.
Check out their new starter plants!
It's a perfect place to get local produce, but it's laughable that they still call themselves "dirt cheap". Prices are equivalent to Whole Foods.
Love love love The Root Cellar! The best collection of local goodies, charcuterie boards at its finest, the freshest produce, and their made in-house deli options make a delicious dinner a snap. In addition, the Potting Shed can help you …
Well organized
Expensive but worth a visit for quality groceries.
Fresh, local and affordable! This place is one of the reasons I love living here
Always well priced fresh vegetables. Lots of variety!
Awesome spot for produce and fancy food
Good variety, farm-style atmosphere. Not the lowest price points you can find.
I’m thrilled that the Root Cellar is opening a location in Cook Street Village. It has long been the most reasonable place for fresh produce but the drive out was problematic. Thank you!
Great selection and great products!Very fresh and most local.
Love this place. I come in every Saturday morning at 8am and get my veggies and fruit for the week. Good quality, lots of local produce, great meat department and the staff is always welcoming and friendly. Also, kudos for the live music on weekends. Sets a great atmosphere ✌????
We love to shop at the Root Cellar. They have a great selection and prices.
Got some nice organic cucumber, organic celery, and organic oranges - staff was helpful and directed me to each item
So expensive but their selection is unbeatable
Great produce and selection of fresh and healthy items
Hands down the best place for groceries. Truly is dirt cheap and amazing fresh quality. The chop shop and coffee projects are great too! I love buying plants from here too, they have a huge selection!
Like it as an alternative. Has a good selection.
Welcome to our neighbourhood
Great selection of local produce, very reasonable prices
Nice munches even if its healthy food for your body f yah
Legitimately my fav grocery store in town. They just have such good product, sales, and staff.
Good price for fresh food highly recommended.
They have an excellent selection of fresh produce and a great selection of bulk nuts
The Root Cellar is a fantastical experience, with their emphasis on local quality foods, unique products and store set-up - a great costumer experience. We take all Victoria visitors to RC and look forward to having one even closer to our home.
It is fun to go and lust over wonderful fresh food, plants and organically raised meats etc... but you need to check prices first. Get on their list for specials. Beware ...for things not on sale they are often more expensive than my regular grocery store. I notice that many shoppers do not seemed concerned with prices.... but I am. Their reduced produce is not much of a deal. The till line up is well organized and people are helpful... if you are rich..have a great time there!
Great place for fresh from the farm items. Very nice coffee shop a well.
I shop weekly at the RC on McKenzie and am very excited for their second location to open up, as it's much closer. I love shopping there because they always have a huge selection of locally-sourced fruits and vegetables at great prices, the customer service is excellent, and they are owned by a local family who cares and gives a lot back to the community. PS - The Root Cellar green sauce (that goes on almost everything!) is legendary.
I ❤ the Root Cellar. Get the green sauce, it will change your life. Seriously.
Root Cellar is the closest to Trader Joe’s I’ve found on the island. Lots of great fresh produce, in-house made deli items, charcuterie selection, and baked goods.
Excellent place to find local produces
Friendly staff. Well stocked. Lots of local produce. Of course imported produce as well.
would put a '0' if choice there. CUT ALL THEIR BIG TREES DOWN. PRODUCE WAY TOO EXPENSIVE, THRIFTY'S FAR BETTER PRICES AND GRADES TOO!
fresh fruit , organic vegetables and friendly service
Great prices, Quality product, Friendly and knowledgeable staff and the fastest moving lineup ever. Sometimes when I shop there they even have live music!!
Amazing produce and meat.
Always helpful and friendly.
I just went to get Cherries, but Google insisted I leave a review. I don't know what Google wants me to write here. Like, store was clean, and they are taking this COVID business seriously. Their stock looks to be fresh.
Great shopping experience including live music on Saturdays and the largest, freshest selection of produce, cheese, meat and poultry !
Great place!
Very busy today. Parking lot had many cars and there were a number of people in the store. Recommend not showing therenear dinner time.
The store hasn't even opened and already has 3 negative reviews ????. We all loved Oxford foods and are sad to see it gone, especially to another high priced establishment. Liked the convience of walking half a block to buy missing ingredients and not paying a ridiculous amount. Now the only options are two ridiculously expensive grocery stores. Sad sad
Great selection of fresh and local foods! The store is always very clean and the staff are extremely friendly. One of my favorite places to shop!
Great produce, but most things are very over-priced, poorly organized in the store, and a pretty limited selection. If you can't eat it, they don't have it, so not very helpful for a one stop shop, you'll have to make two stops to get your grocery shopping done.
Best place for fresh local fruit, veges, meats and more!
Always great fruit and vegetables - I cross town to shop here
Fantastic produce and prices! Best place get your veggies.
Fresh produce, locally-owned, courteous friendly staff! They carry Glenwood meats bacon ???? (delicious), and Portofino bread ???? products. Great prices on their outdoor plants! Thanks for being open during this pandemic!
Everything so fresh, and staff helpful and smiling.
Wonderful variety of fresh produce and friendly staff.
Always a joy, excellent fruits and veg and so much more.
Love this local market...it just keeps getting better and better
Always nice, great local foods and good staff.
Great selection of fruits and veggies, and love that they put a Discovery Coffee in here!
Can't wait till the musicians are back!
Fantastic produce, and some of the best cookies I've ever had.
Always go here for fresh turkeys for Thanksgiving
Best produce in town all year round. You can count on a great selection of local and imported fruits and vegetables. Their butcher is great as well, never disappointed at the selection of meats they have.
Large selection of locally grown fruits and vegetables
Staff not taking appropriate COVID precautions
Huge selection of fresh and sometimes unusual vegetables.
A variety of local and imported fruits and vegetables. Always fresh always kind.
Always fresh and great local food. I love their fruits in season.
A little bit pricey but good products.
Fantastic selection of produce. Many locally grown and produced foods. Hormone free meats. Nice selection of island and gourmet cheeses. Many organic options. I particularly like to get bacon, pulled BBQ pork, soup bones and hormone free meats here.
High quality products, though a little expensive. Delicious bread!
Great place for local fruits and veggies. Rather pricey but wide variety and good quality.
It has such a great atmosphere. Coziest market.
Good
Root cellar is a nice grocery store, produce is very fresh! Lot of different kinds.
I enjoyed Brown and the brownie. So much prepaid to go again
Lovely grocery store with fresh produce and good prices. Good community atmosphere and quite environmentally conscious.
a tad expensive sometimes, other times you can find really good discount stuff. Fine local food when in season and a great selection
This place is the one to go to for fresh everything@
Great selection...... popular with locals..... one of the only places that carried okra from time to time.... not that I eat okra that often... but that is an indication of their commitment to catering to diverse culinary adventures. 2 Thumbs up!
Above average mostly local to BC quality produce and meats, as well as premium local confections and condiments. Very friendly and helpful staff as well, always a wholesome experience.
Excellent selection of fresh produce. Prices seemed very reasonable and most of the items appeared to be sourced locally.
Love this place for veggies such a huge selection, so many choices, friendly helpful staff and an awesome coffee shop
We proudly feature The Root Cellar Village Green Grocer in the Top 10 Local Markets category.
A rich persons grocery store. Mascurading as an environmentally friendly store. bourgeoisie
Kuodos to the pleasant staffer in deli who got me the pickles!
Good prices and fantastic products. One star off for unsafe turning into parking lot.
An amazing place! Fruits and vege are really fresh and mostly local. Great choice and variety of products. They have meat and some homemade meals and salad. You can purchase some fine grocery product. The price is really good for the quality you get. Don't hesitate, Go!
This is my favorite grocery store in Victoria...good fresh local food and now deli items all at a good price
My happy place
I love this store!
Great selection of foods
Really nice quality things but it seems like some things are overpriced.
I like the root cellar enough to actually plan my shopping trips around it. The food is great quality for amazing prices, and the service is fantastic. Selection isn't the biggest, but they do have awesome local products. Definitely recommend for anybody looking to buy weekly groceries.
My top, most favourite grocer on this island!!!
A good variety of produce and quality meats. Parking lot can be a bit of a zoo during busy times.
Good food but bring your wallet it's not cheap. Very busy place.
Love supporting a local. We were chatting with one of the employees, commented to him that one of their prices was better then the chain store. He was very glad to hear that, and thanked us for making his day. The selection of eclectic foods and sauces is exemplary.
Best place for produce, great selection of deli meats! They even roast their own coffee!
Love this place, great vegetables, deli and staff
Locally owned, fresh produce, supports local farmers and small businesses, excellent deli section, they even have a florist and pottery shop in the store. They are a bit more expensive for their produce, but you know it is quality. They sell foods near exipry in their clearance section, great for finding deals if you're going to cook them the same day.
Everything is excellent. It is very popular for good reason. Only deficiency is lack of organic produce selections.
Quite expensive. Bought 2 pop, 2 bags of chips, some pepperoni. Came to $40
Love the root cellar! Fresh local produce and geat live music while I was shopping today!
Lots of great produce at good prices.
Always busy but always worth it!
Local produce and deli items for reasonable prices
Saw this place as we drove past to an appointment in Saanich. Decided to turn around and check it out because it looked interesting (and we needed a good coffee). Glad we did! A cross between a farmer’s market and a regular grocery store, (think Granville Island Market). From a cursory walk-through I’d say similar to Whole Foods, but without the pretence. Prices seem about the same as regular grocery store. Great produce, good coffee, and pre-made snacks, sandwiches, salads... Time was limited but we will add this to our list of places to stop again next time we’re in Victoria.
Love the Root Cellar. Local and fresh, with a strong connection to the community. Great produce.
Wonderful selection, reasonable prices, and helpful staff.
The RC carries a type of gluten free wrap that I cannot get anywhere else, so when I run out I shop there and pick up whatever produce I need. Ever since they expanded, there are no deals; Thrifty's beats their prices more often than not. However, there is an impressive selection of produce.
Such a great place to shop !
Everything was very fresh.
Easily the best fresh and as locally sourced greens and goodies as you can get in Victoria on the regular. Prices for most produce is comparable if not cheaper than the nearby chains, and the staff are generally uuber friendly...
I go out of my way to shop at the RC weekly because I'm in love with so many of their delicious products, but it's their business practices and dedication to everything local that have earned my utmost respect.I'm soooo excited about this second location!
Best local food place in town. Their green sauce is cray
It is amazing to have a Root Cellar location near me again. This location has done a great job of sourcing options despite the limited space (good selection of GF/Celiac Options). The quality of products offered is excellent and the establishment is beating the pricing of other locations in the village area (on food staples) by 10-20%. It is amazing to have a "one stop shop" for all of the local farms and food providers. This will happily be my main grocery store for the foreseeable future.
Always the best .quick in and out .friendly staff .incredible selection.
This place is great, however some meats and food items from here that are marinated or pre-prepared do not come with cooking/preparing instructions so I have to guess. I really wish they would put some instructions on there packaging.
Has everything very fresh produce and fast through the cashier tills
Great place for a quick coffee and excellent selection of meats añd produce.
expensive
Great local store. Great prices. Fresh produce and meat. Friendly staff. Awesome cafe. A+++++
Rude employee and rotten oranges! I would have given one star, but I have had positive experiences with them in the past, so I raised it to two. Yesterday, with my four year old son, I came across 10 lbs boxes of oranges, and I said to him, "maybe we should get one." Then I noticed that the boxes looked like the same boxes that I bought two weeks and three weeks earlier from the root cellar. The box I bought three weeks ago was great, but the one I bought two weeks ago had several orange go moldy within a couple of days, and I mentioned this to my son. There were no other customers around, but there was a root cellar employee working in the area that overheard what I said to my son. Then, I opened a box to find a very mouldy orange near the top of the box. I pointed that out to my son and then opened another box. Then, the root cellar employee inserted himself into our conversation and asked in an irritated voice, "do you want me to help you find a good box of oranges, or would you like to just stand there complaining about our produce?" With a smile, I told him that I just wanted stand there complaining. Most of my encounters with the employees at the root cellar have been positve, but this not the first time that I've encountered a rude employee at the root cellar, and it is the not first time that I've encountered stock being sold for weeks, and the quality being very good at first but very poor after a while. Sometimes, it's difficult to tell, but I suggest to other costomers that they be careful about buying any produce that may be old, and if it's been on sale for multiple weeks, that a warning not to buy it.
Excellent prices and selection.
Scensory overload. So many fresh fruits and vegetables.
Had a super positive experience at the Rootcellar today! Maddi was super friendly and helpful! Amazing quality of products as well!
Felt very safe. All staff in masks . Counters and buggies wiped down . Great selection of produce .
Really good quality produce. Not all are local but still worth going.
(Translated) Fantastic. Beautiful vegetables and beautiful fruits. Organic and local market. (Original) Fantastique. Beaux légumes et beaux fruits. Marché organique et local.
Lovely staff and great produce!
Excellent produce and great meat especially the Maui ribs and home made sausages
Omg Phil the produce manager was so good to me. I'm from out of town and he went out of his way to help me find black garlice for my aunt that has breast cancer. I just cant believe how he went out of his way to help me.
Love the Root Cellar great variety of fresh produce and good prices. ..
Great local produce. They carry an array of items you can't find at other grocers in vic.
Try the cheese and beef sliders. Best ever taste!!!
Produces are great most of the time. I got rotten produce and fruits when they were on sale and decided not to purchase anything anymore when it is on sale. Staffs are great.
Huge variety of vegetables also sells by the case.
Good local place, staff are great
Great relaxing grocery shopping experience!! You've got to try the green sauce!
Lovely produce, great vibes. It’s a more limited selection on the conventional groceries side of things due to space limitations so I can’t often get everything on my list but what I do get is great quality and local so I can feel extra good about it! Wonderful cheeses, very nice meat but the produce steals the show.
Most of the 'house packaged' or 'house made' goods have no ingredient list on them. Whenever I have asked what the ingredients are in a product the staff can never tell me. Even after consulting with each other and going to the back of the store. I love the place and what it offers but its just disappointing when nobody can tell me what is in the food they make. Please start putting ingredients on your food or at least have the info on hand for people that have allergies or intolerances!!!!!
I'm disappointed by most retail places I visit. Most don't deserve my business. They do little or nothing to earn it. They don't engage my senses they do nothing to surprise me ........ or fascinate me. Their attitude is "Hey, you're just buying a bag of groceries, a shirt, a pair of shoes or a sofa. What's the big deal?". In the world of retail when there is so much that's mediocre it's a genuine treat when you visit a business that exceeds whatever expectation you might have had when you walk through the door. Root Cellar did it for me today. They were amazing. In every respect. Thank you Root Cellar. And I hope you don't mind me sharing my delightful experience with friends, family and associates. Gene K.
My husband and I have shopped at the Root Cellar for four years despite reservations around their crowded environment and deficient Covid precautions. Currently, shoppers need not wear masks if they are double vaccinated but where is the scrutiny around this? With the variant on the rise, we consider that The Root Cellar should be more proactive in protecting staff and customers. We will not allow its failure to take these steps to trump our need to shop in a safe environment. What is not to appreciate about a grocer that offers premium products and supports local farms? Apart from ongoing Covid concerns at the Root Cellar, we unhappily discovered another side of the business during our shop on August 14th. We had brought back for return a block of mouldy cheese - it was clearly identified as a Root Cellar product but because we didn't have the receipt, there was resistance to compensate and the distrust of us by staff was obvious. Evidently, one can return flawed goods within 48 hours with a receipt. As elderly customers who have spent thousands of dollars at the Root Cellar and who drive 9 kilometres each way for their products, we were not in a position to make the long drive within 48 hours of the discovery of the defective product. We also explained that it is unreasonable to expect hundreds of dollars of groceries to be unpacked and inspected within 48 hours - products such as the cheese in question might remain in the original wrapping for several days or longer before the need to open it arises. After an approximate twenty minute wait, the cost of the bad cheese was subtracted from our order as a "special one time concession". No apology was provided in regards to the bad product or regarding our inconvenience. Instead another lecture was delivered about their embedded return policy. One would not expect such poor customer service from a high end grocer. . We will not be shopping at the Root Cellar again. Our business will go elsewhere in the future - a shame that the ultimate victim here will be the local growers.
Excellent groceries delicious fresh fruit and vegetables
If you are buying fresh fruit or veggies - this place is the bomb. Meat is ok but a little pricey. Stay away from the ribs as they are awful. We tried 3 types and they were sooooo salty. Stick to the fresh food and you can’t go wrong. Stay away from the meat is my honest advice - stick to a butcher. But for garden produce - they are the best.
We enjoyed sharing our jams and jellies at the Root Cellar with so many kind people! Keep spreading the Love! Mrs Jones Jams
Beautifully designed with all the fresh produce and specialty food items I'm looking for. I cannot wait for the Root Cellar to open In Cook Street Village. I currently make the trek to the Mckenzie location as the produce is the best in the city and the experience of shopping there is special and far and above any other grocer. Plus, all the incredibly delicious sauces made in house and the specialty vegan and gluten free items keep me returning again and again!
Fantastic local grocery store! Great selection of organic and local produce when possible. Friendly and helpful staff! I was able to use my own containers at the deli with absolutely no problems, and was even complimented on bringing them! Will definitely be going back regularly.
Very excited to use the awesome veggies i picked up.
Good selection of vegetables and local meats (especially Island raised beef, chicken, lamb and pork knownst to me). Great salads.
Great customer service and an awesome deli :)
Amazing selection of fresh ingredients and quick friendly staff. Definitely a favourite of ours!
Love this store! Had live music the other day. How great is that ❣️ awesome food! Awesome service! Can't wait for the Cook Street location to open -- next week-- woohoo!
Love all the selection of fresh organic produce, sale items, friendly atmosphere and helpful staff. We really enjoyed the live music this Saturday!
Awesome service and product
They have a great selection of produce and a few other items. They sometimes have good deals but make sure you know your prices before shopping here.
Great place, amazing service!
Awesome selection, everything from meats to cheeses and veggies, including organics
The service is great, staff has always been incredibly kind and helpful. The produce is always well rotated and high quality. I love the mid-week sales! Unfortunately, the marked down items simply aren't even worth looking at anymore. I used to fill a whole basket with the pulled produce. Now, everything is either way over priced (The other day there was a tray of limp celery wrapped up for $2.99), moldy, or even worse -- and this no longer surprises me -- both. Now, this doesn't bother me so much because I don't have to buy any of that... but what did bother me is the deceptive packaging. It's quite often you'll see wrapped fruit with their moldy or pudding bits hidden by the Styrofoam. It's not a good feeling when I'm composting something as soon as it comes out the bag. Maybe things will be different in the summer? I feel like I'm betraying this store by writing such a negative review, because I really do love the Root Cellar. It blows the other markets out of the water in many regards. I just feel that it's important for me to voice my opinion on a matter that's had my attention for quite a while.
Amazing grocery store! It's our local. Well laid out, deals galore, friendly and genuine staff. Really appreciate all the extra measures they've taken during this challenging time to ensure a safe and enjoyable shopping experience. Thank-you Root Cellar!
Amazing. A LOT bigger than what I thought; not just your little produce place. Well done!
Good local produce some deals some expensive items but all local and fresh
They actually closed at 7pm not 8pm. This was frustrating to find out upon my arrival at 6:45… other then that it is a wonderful grocery store. Great prices and fresh produce!!
Produce prices seem pretty good which will make a lot of people in this neighborhood happy. Almost a year without a grocery store has been a total bummer. I'm a little disappointed in the selection and prices of non-produce items. It would be great to have a store nearby with decent juice/milk alternative/cheese alternative prices like we had at our old grocery store, Oxfood Foods. But no. As for selection, many of the things in this store could already be bought at our other two health food stores.
Super quality and selection. And the price is right
Very AMAZING selection on both indoor and outdoor plants! And very reasonable prices! Definitely recommend if you want more interesting choices for your indoor jungle!!
I asked about a sign on the wall in the store that said ,"Eat your f#&@%*g vegetables please." I was told that word meant farming or something....really! Not funny. Since when did " farming " become a swear word.
Excellent fruit and veggies, lovely deli section, gorgeous plants and flowers and I love the coffee shop. You can make a quick stop, but don't! Stay and spend some time to relax and enjoy.
20$ for a bottle of kombucha and a small container of snap pea salad ......
I am so happy to have the Root Cellar in my community. This is our favourite place for local fruits, veggies, and meats, and they've recently expanded to carry a great selection of other groceries and treats. The staff are always super awesome to interact with. Really happy with the direction the owners are taking this business. Although I've been shopping here for years, I'm writing this during the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak, and have been blown away by how well they are communicating with their customers, and their focus on everyone's safety. I'm a loyal customer for sure, and hope that the community continues to support this wonderful business. Also - thanks for starting to carry flour!
Best place for local fresh produce in town, been going every week for years
Great vibe and seems like a great selection of fresh produce
The quality of produce, protein and general grocery products at "The Root Cellar" is truly top notch. I'm never disappointed and when I'm looking for quality this is my goto. The prices are what keep me from rating it 5 stars but I'm a big believer of getting what I pay for and what I pay for here is fantastic, high quality products.
Great place for fresh local produce and meats. Great flower and plant shop. Gets busy but goes well
Very refreshing fall candied yam salad with quinoa, cheese, beans, peppers, tomatoes, and arugula.
Great green grocer with lots of other things Meat and Fish. Friendly staff and a great selection including hot coffe and other snacks.
First impressions walking into Cook St location looks like they sell nothing but produce. $8.99 for a sandwich with a thin slice of meat and a bit of lettuce is absolutely ridiculous. On the plus side the cashier was friendly and professional.
Awesome store with lots of great hard to find produce
Whenever I've bought from their tables, likelihood of produce being moldy is high. Management is good at replacing whatever has been purchased. Advice: Carefully inspect your potential purchases.
Excellent place for veggies
This is a great place for affordable organic and local produce. Pricy otherwise.
Good cheap veggies!
Great selection, prices and staff!
More expensive than Thrifty's if that's possible
Meh.
Very fresh wide selection of local and exotic fruits and vegetables. Great coffee.
Wonderful place for excellent produce. They usually periodically have great deals on fruits and veggie. Lots of local artisanal products if you like to support local.
Great place . healthy products. Love the place ????❤
everything fresh everything delicious
Solid and fresh produce. Great selection to choose from. Can get a little busy during the day.
Don't be frustrated by the long lineup, it goes fast! Never seen less than 4 people running tills when we are there...
Love it! So many wonderful and fun items to choose from! ☺️ A little shop always turns into a big shop there!
Another good visit with great selection of produce. I love this place.
Super friendly
Always great but it really wish masks were mandatory, people reach beside you every turn I took someone was as close as one foot????
Great store with lots of local products!
Love the quality and selection
Vast selection of produce including organic selections and locally sourced items..
Excellent produce at the best prices in town. Shop the sales to buy in season. Great selection of meat at the deli counter as well.
It's a very pleasant visit produce is very fresh
Dog unfriendly: I was told that I couldn't tie my dog up under any of the outdoor "tents"on a scorching day. The guy actually told me to leave my dog in my car and said that I would know for next time! There won't be a next time.
Good should put flyer add farther down line to get in could not read it with out losing My place
Okay not best experience with cashier
(Translated) It's definitely the freshest ingredients, local and organic labels, lots of parking spaces, very good service attitude, reasonable price, I like it very much (Original) 绝对是最新鲜的食材,local 和 organic 的标签,停车位很多,服务态度也非常好,价格合适,非常喜欢这里
So good!
Love the selection and quality of their produce. They also have a wonderful deli and bakery products from a few local bakeries
Love this place and it's variety of local products.
Went in for a sandwich and bought outside. Super dry and not good at all. Threw it out. They dont sell cold drinks at the side "hole in the wall". Went inside for a cold drink.. Ended up grabbing a few groceries while I was there. Hamburgers they pre made were gross. Dry and not good after I bbq them. The next day I bbq some stinky smelly chicken wings. I thought maybe they are still good. Nope they tasted like they were off. Oh and the rude cashier kept grilling me like I was stealing my paid for sandwich at her till. Rude! Dont bother with this place. Rude staff, expired over priced food. Thriftys is just up the road
Over priced hype! What we need is a one stop shop. Still have to go to thriftys for most things so might as well go there!
Best selection in Victoria for fresh produce, bar none.
Other than visiting my daughter definitely my favorite place to stop..... I am addicted wish we had this in Nanaimo!!!
These amazing staff members have been so unbelievably gracious every step of the way. I am exempt from wearing a mask because of a very serious lung and throat surgery and they have never once has anyone made me feel bad about it. They have …
Great selection of products.
Awesome people fabulous food! What a great job they've done of coping with covid!! Horrahhh!
The fruit&veggies is super fresh! This has been my NO.1 grocery shopping place!
Love the new location, feels like it's been part of the Cook street community for a long time. Between the live music, friendly staff, great selection of local products AND the endless supply of green sauce, I look forward to shopping at this store!
Great fresh food, friendly staff
This is the ultimate grocery shopping experience! Live music, an array of unique produce and other foods, and support of local makers and bakers. I am so excited for the Cook St. Village location to open, as that one is within walking distance for me. As an avid cook and recipe developer, The Root Cellar is my foodie playground.
Wonderful dresh and great aelection of organics
I love my shopping experience at the Root Cellar. Supporting local farmers, fresh food, great prices and amazingly friendly, fast service. Incredible thank you.
This place is like heaven to me hahaha I used to live in Victoria and when I recently came back for a visit, I had to stop in to The Root Cellar multiple times (even though I was staying in a hotel without a kitchen ????) just to look around and get some snackage! The produce here is incredible and I’m SO jealous that there is no market with this kind of selection and quality where I live ????
Although a bit pricey outstanding quality and selection!
(Translated) There are almost all vegetables. There are also many products produced on Vancouver Island. There are many products whose prices are higher than other places, so you can compare them carefully before purchasing. (Original) 거의 모든 야채가 있어요.벤쿠버 섬에서 생산된 상품도 많이 있어요.가격이 다른곳에 비해 높은 상품이 많이 있으니 잘 비교하고 구입 하면 된다
Very good produce specials, but otherwise way too expensive. They also run specials that turn out not to be in stock (with no rainchecks), and many of the employees will do hand springs to avoid helping you.
Love this place! High quality fresh food with an amazing selection. Good to know that I can trust their sources. My toddler loves being able to have a little shopping cart here! Happy to support a local company!
Love the fresh local produce!
Great produce and meat counter. But their 'Dirt Cheap' framing in their advertising is wrong. Anything But Dirtcheap.
High quality, fresh produce with affordable prices compared to other grocers. Also they make some of their own niche items that you won't be able to find elsewhere. They also support local businesses and sell their products, which is nice. The checkout line goes quickly.
By far the best place in town for fresh fruits and veggies! Amazing selection, good prices. Wish they'd expand their meat dept.
Edit - upgraded to 3 stars. I have visited this place since - convenient location and good produce. I guess Covid had an effect on all of us with massive strains on workloads. Even though original experience was not the greatest, it does not deserve a 1 star - its an okey sore :) ___________Initial review: I didn't think it was possible to come out of a store worked up and stressed. The store has very narrow passageways and it was PACKED. It would have been hectic even during normal times.... Nowadays I am pretty sure it is breaking all distancing laws as it is impossible to keep distance there... Plus the number of people inside makes for a very rushed/hellish atmosphere. I felt like drinking after getting out of that place. Good product selection, good prices, hellish layout/way too many people being let in, in one go.
Excellent upgrade from the ol Oxford foods. Welcome and well done!
Always a fabulous place to shop for selection , quality & local!
Shout-out to Henry at The Potting Shed for making my first Christmas tree shopping experience an absolute delight! He was patient, well-informed, and so good-natured I was almost sad when we finally made our decision. If you need a helping hand with your tree this year, you can't do better than him! (Love The Root Cellar generally, by the way. Recently moved out of the area but still make a weekly pilgrimage for amazing deals on high-quality produce in a stylish and cozy environment.)
I recently visited the new location of The Root Cellar, and I loved it! They carry a great range of local products, carefully selected. I was impressed with the layout and decor, such a great taste! The live music was a great added touch. The house-made sauces are to die for, the carrots were delicious. When visiting Victoria, the Root Cellar is a must stop!
Long lines at the tills and doesn't seem to be much staff. Much prefer Mckenzie location
Best place to find an unique vegetable and fruits.
They have a great variety of produce. Great staff make shopping at the Root Cellar a pleasant moment.
It's packed with fresh local fruits and vegetables, meats, cheeses and dairy.
Excellent selection of local and imported produce. Also garden plants and seeds. Convenient location.
Good selection of BC products.
