Village Foods has a surprising number of products, especially organic, gluten-free, vegan, locally-sourced, and products you would expect in an upscale big-city grocery store. They have a salad bar, deli, Slow Rise Bakery bread which is pretty special, and have a good meat department and produce section. The prices are fair, especially being on an island.

We were in the store on tuesday and had a rude cashier . I had put my purchases on the belt and left a big gap in between mine and the person in front of me . When i looked for my stuff it was in the bag of the person in front of me .When i questioned the girl she said how am i supposed to know and its to late to do anything about it. The lady next in line said she had all day so she could fix this problem and the girl said if you want to return it go to customer service . The lady next in line said that the girl..129..was rude .The next day we went to the quickstop and guess who was there..129...We told her we were unhappy and she was blunt again said she did not remember us and then she recalled our problem and had no apology for us again . Customers are always right arnt they ? We pay their wages !!!

Nice store, nice selection and very nice staff. I go there about twice a week. I see new items on the shelves often. It's a small big store with a deli and ready to go hot and cold foods, flowers and plants, lotto, coffee to go, water dispenser.

One and only large supermarket on Gabriola. Can find almost everything there. Contributes immensely to the community and non-profit events throughout the year. Some items are definitely very expensive and one wouldn't do a very large shop there or buy certain household goods there. Good for fruit and vegetables. Certainly great to have when one doesn't want to go to Nanaimo.

Quick, something needs to be done about the bottleneck at the entrance though. People stop to chat standing in the doorway or people are going in, coming out, returning buggies, getting buggies. There is not a lot of room to manover.

I think that, thanks largely to their wonderful staff, Nesters have done a pretty good job of establishing themselves on Gabriola. However, I just attempted to eat one of their 'Indian Entree Assorted Varieties' and I am just one step away from needing the services of a good chiropractor, or a copy of the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Now I hate to complain, even my poor Mother knew this to be true, but I was traumatized by the experience and I doubt I shall ever be the same again. It was ghastly. There was some white rice and a bit of green stuff. There was also some meat. The later was so dry and so tough that I am no longer in need of a dentist. It was half submerged in an orange substance made from pure cardamon, which may have been the closest the package came to anything "Indian" Talking of which, I recon the slinky black plastic tray it was packaged in would have had more nutrition in it than the contents and it would certainly be easier to chew. Come on guys! Any first year college kid with a girl friend to impress could do better than that! With humble apologies to the East Indian community (who's food is probably the finest and most sophisticated on the planet)It's not that difficult to make an English/Canadian version of even the most humble "curry" taste good.

I am not pleased how they convert the price of pounds into kilos.The other day I bought peaches.The pound price was a $1.99.Kilo $5.49.Appr. a $1.11 more Luckily I spotted this.And this is not the first time.Buyer beware
