REVIEWS OF Moss Street Market IN Esquimalt

Wonderful all the time

Shannon Davis

Best produce.. great live music... atm on site as cash needed for some booths... people bring their dogs which is a treat :)... only issue might be accessibility -- on the main produce strip if anyone has a walker scooter wheelchair it's very narrow and people take a while to notice you if you're trying to get through... however the music...beverages..crafts..food section is music more open and on top of a solid square of concrete...

This is my favourite farmer's market in the region of Victoria. It is very well organized, and most of the farmers and vendors have been going to this market for years, and in some cases, decades. There is a great balance of vendors, from the farmers who bring their wonderful produce, to artisanal food products, to all kinds of handmade artisanal crafts, clothing, jewelry, etc. A different band plays every week. Every April, I am excited to know that the market will be starting to operate, and every October, I am sad to see it close. I highly recommend this market!

Too expensive. I have travelled all over the world including South Africa, France, England, USA, Far East and everywhere markets are consistently lower in price than are the surrounding supermarkets and the produce is fresher that supermarkets. In Victoria the community markets are the opposite of what I have experienced elsewhere and are, therefore, not competitive. Yes, the products are all of high quality as they are in markets I have seen and shopped in around the world. Community markets would have much increased clientele numbers if the costs were at least competitive but preferably lower than supermarkets and mall vendors. When I travel I shop predominantly in community markets and have never been disappointed however in the markets in Victoria at least I have not had the same experiences.

Kathy McKay

This market is a great place for finding organics of all types. It has a festive atmosphere and all the vendors are friendly. You can find great food for your on-site-outdoor lunch while listening to nice music from local talents. The variety of crafts being sold is amazing, even a Japanese couple is there selling hand-made kimonos and tasty home made Japanese delicacies. Local cheeses, vegetables of all kinds, plants, pottery, breads with other baked goods and so many other things can be found there. It is open every Saturday from 10am to 2:00 from May to October if I remember well. It is just a great place where to spend some of you weekend.

Most markets [..I’ve visited quite a few] around the world offer produce and ware cheaper than regular, established outlets due to the fact they don’t pay for expensive rental space, advertisement, extra labour cost, transportation...etc. The Moss St. Market is for the well-to-do that can afford to pay $4 or $5 for an organic lettuce that means the Fairfield and Oak Bay crowd. The vendors apparently want to pay their mortgages selling their produce at outrageous prices...and at this rate they probably will be mortgage-free very soon. Great place and fun, but absolutely unaffordable for a working family.

Lorraine Lewis

Lots of selection. Go early it closes at 2

Sue Mowbray

As a disabled person with an assistance dog which is tethered into the basket of my mobility scooter I was treated very rudely when I inquired if assistance dogs were allowed into the market. The person I asked got quite snippy and hostile with me and as a result I refuse to support this market. I will be going to the James Bay market in the future where dogs are not only allowed but encouraged. I would encourage all disabled persons to think twice about patronizing the Moss Street Market and Craft Fair.

Not a lot of veggie and fruit vendors as we had expected. A good place to get some local organic vegetables at 3 dollars or above. Good selection of lunch vendors.

Great place to shop and support your local farmers and artisans. Good place to bring kids as there are playgrounds nearby. Only bring your dog if it's well trained though because it is often busy with lots of distractions.

Best Farmer's market on the island. It's been going strong for decades. Saturdays 10-2

Jade S-T

Had a lovely time at the Moss Street Market! Bought a ton of jams and preserves from Maison Preserves Co, and other produce and goodies. I love this handmade whale bowl from Eliska Liska in the “Crafter and Artisan Vendor”area. Everything was socially distanced and there were lots of COVID19 procedures to follow, but it was all simple and easy to follow. We found parking in the school parking lot, but there was also lots of street parking available. I would love to stop by again this summer! Would highly recommend for people who like outdoor markets, craft fairs, and shopping local!

As good as it gets in BC. Remarkable suppliers and ambiance.

Many stalls selling organic fruits and vegetables. Not very big market but still good to visit

Lex Nelson

so many lovely vendors! quiet a few vendors are now accepting debit/credit during the pandemic, which is lovely. the market is very spread out right now, which may be difficult for folx who have mobility issues, but it's also good that the market is spread out to limit COVID transmission. market closes at 2pm .

PureKnix (PureKnickers)

Definitely one of the better markets around, but arrive early if want fresh produce or bread. The popular vendors sell out quickly. Don't be fooled by the long line ups to certain things like food. They are not necessarily better than any similar vendor. It would appear regulars patrons have their favorite sources and a short lineup turns long once the mob mentality kicks in. Good music, food and some interesting vendors. Well worth a couple hours of your Saturday.

This is the best markets in the region in my opinion! I have been to many other farmers market around Greater Victoria and in the Lower Mainland and a couple elsewhere in BC. Moss Street Market (spring/summer) has some of the best produces, handcrafted food and goods. There are two small playgrounds at the market/next to the market. The market also has a kids zone and live performances to keep everyone entertained.

I went to this market for my first time this past summer. I got some really nice fruit and a ring. I really enjoyed the various little shops they have and getting to sample a few things was really great too. I don't have any kids but I really enjoyed seeing families really have a great time even while shopping. There was a nice area for some kids to play with each other in the center of all the shopping. My friend I went with has a kid so he got to have some fun while one of us went and did some shopping while the other watched him. I look forward to possibly visiting again this coming summer!

One of our favourite things to do on a Saturday! This market is a local gem, especially in the summer when there are musical acts on stage, incredible organic produce, awesome lunch food — salmon burgers, local sausages, Persian kabobs, Middle Eastern dishes made by a women’s collective, and more. Fry’s Bakery is highlight, and also gluten-free alternatives if that’s your thing. Chai, coffee, and kambucha are on offer. As of 2017, local distilleries and brewers tout craft liquor, wine and beer. The many craft sellers offer locally made ceramics, jewelry, clothing, toys and much more. A kids art tent is also a highlight. All of this in a very pleasant setting on the grounds of SJD elementary school, with playground equipment both in the market itself and on the other side of the school.

Lot's of variety here. There's stands for produce, plants, honey, cheese, bread, alcohol, snacks, crafts, clothes, gemstones, pottery, massages....etc. There's more, but that's all I could think of. There's also a good variety of food stalls: The usual hot dog, middle Eastern, and more that I can't categorize. The live music preformances are quite nice. Overall, great place to spend the day, walking around and checking things out. My favourite place to spend my Saturday mornings, especially if it's sunny.

The over priced market is a shade of what it use to be. Sadly the prices at the market are getting to be outrageous, especially when I can purchase the same items near by for 10 - 30% less in a lot of cases. There also needs to be a certification system on produce to prove it is grown locally instead of purchase in bulk dressed up and sold as a locally produced organic produce.
