This Fruit Store belongs to the category of Supermarket.
We recently moved to Victoria and have been shopping at this store (for its convenient location) a few times since then. Great to find a grocery store in the downtown area.???? Prices are quite high overall but that is no unusual for a private grocery like this. Produce section is ok but they could definitely use more organics. The deli tends to run out of prepared salads quite early in the day which isn't helpful. Staff is hit and miss. Some very pleasant, others not. I still prefer a larger store with a better selection and more reasonable prices. But this one IS handy if you are staying or living in the downtown area and don't want to drive or bus elsewhere.
Features an impressive selection of baked goods, many of which, if not everything, is made in-store by them. There's a little bit of everything, ranging from cake slices, squares, cookies, and pies: well-priced and clearly labelled. Being a supermarket, it can't come close to the treats I had at the amazing bakeries in town, but it was definitely one of the more interesting and appetizing supermarket bakeries! -- Mimi's Cake Tour
Great variety... but hard to park and get around store during peak hours
Excellent service, employee jacob was very helpful with helping me find my Carbonara Sauce
Has very west coast vibe. Great Delhi and bakery you will also find brands that are not so common its a great place to shop.
Wanted some crab legs and got a bunch of baggage instead from Vincent at the deli. He was extremely rude and conceded. For the high prices I would expect at minimum a decent service. I left the store without doing any shopping. Anyway, they lost my business, I'm going to Thrifty's in the future. Good luck with that guy. PS I spent about 400 a month there up until now.
Very convenient location, a little pricy but great deli food/ready made meals.
The desserts are awesome! ???? The workers there are super nice! ☺
Great downtown market..m
I walked in, had a specific item to buy, found it at a great price and left with more than I intended. Yum yum yummy!!!
Fresh produce, meat . Not so expensive. Open till late night
That's the only grocery store ..they carry my most favorite sparkling natural juice..brand Spritzter ..it's a good thing..last time i went they were short of supply of my only flavor i use of it so an employee went check out for more of the product and came back with a case of it..i bought..on each visit i always buy a good few of it.About sales on grocery ..not much there but sometimes they got it right for sales on an item or few items. Also sometimes they have my favorite ready to go cooked cabbage rolls..i would very much like it if they would have always that food..in conclusion it worth it for me to make a stop or a detour at that store. They also have the best of lemon bar called :lemonlicious.
I love their bakery. Tasty treats. Great deals on produce as well. But I have to say, their staff aren't the happiest. Not a lot of smiles. I still recall last year I asked someone where something was and their response was not my department ????
Large store for Downtown with a great variety of selection and tastes. Staff are always friendly and helpful. Great meat selection and in-house bakery.
I like this store. It used to be the only 'real' grocery store downtown. The employees are mostly helpful and friendly, but it gets 3 stars from me because it is more expensive than other some grocery store chains. So that makes me only shop there if I have to.
It's not like a normal grocery store - it's more fresh and natural, so a little different than we're used to but I loved it!
Sushi & Noddles that we bought were horrible. Good soup and good selection of fruits
Love this shop They always sell my favorite icecream and the staff are always so wonderful ????
Their self checkout machines don’t take tap. I don’t even carry cards around anymore, it’s the 21st century. So I guess I just won’t shop here.
Convenient, friendly, has a bit of everything. Sausages are excellent, as is the bakery. Recommended
Great collection of spices, seafood. Good location.
4 stars - 5 star meat and bakery, minus one star for the overpriced items. Sale items in the flier can be very good value. - changed to five stars because this place sets a high standard for customer service. People who work here must like their jobs. We get nothing but great service from the staff who are knowledgeable and helpful. We won't shop the staples here as it can be a bit expensive. We shop the sale items though, and I particularly watch the sales in the meat department each week. I have gotten some good deals here! We also had a special cake made up once and the folks in the bakery were very nice - and the cake was very good.
Great store. A lot of local products and other items you can't find in the big stores.
While a bit pricey, but the girl at the bakery counter always makes my day whenever I am there. She has brown hair tied up in a pony tail and I think she has light eyes. She's always so positive and happy.
Great place for groceries. There is plenty of parking spots, it is downtown and prices are good. The best part is their deli and the variety of brands they hold, many from Europe, Middle East and South America. If you follow some kind of food restriction diet, here is one of the best places to go.
I usually take advantage of their late night hours for a snack, great variety in their bakery.
It's convenient having it downtown, and they have possibly the best butchers in town, the pork sausage is to die for, it's the only place worth buying those. The bakery is quite nice too if you like sweets, not a lot of bread options but great pastries and chocolate covered cream puffs will rock your world. It's a little more expensive than some places, not as many sales, and God help you if you require assistance. It's the only grocery store in town with no service desk. I've waited in line a couple times just to ask the cashier a question.
Lots of speciality items available for your shopping delight. The people working at this store have always been friendly and helpful to me, thanks folks.
Nice selection of good, healthy food. Freshly ground, organic coffee for $1 is by far the best deal in town.
They don't treat employees like humans, they treat them like commodities. Also very expensive. Go to Ageless Living which is a block away on Johnson & Quadra. They have a coffee and smoothie bar, point system, and WAY cheaper. Great health food and vitamin store.
A rare five star from me! They CREDIT your bill for each reusable bag you bring! Great selection of local meat. I even saw frogs legs there! And bison from Alberta! Prices can seem high but their lean ground beef was fresh and super cheap!
Good store with better choices than the mainstream stores!
The words that came out of the staff (manger) mouth when wrongly confronting a man with a brain injury whom the whole time was being very polite considering makes me sick and even after they realized their mistake I heard them justifying themselves for stereotypical reasons!!!( Oh he's probably on drugs... ) Yikes I hope that this way of thinking isn't to ingrained into this company and that someone will sort that out I don't think I can give zero stars that and the jacked up pricing boooo on you
Nice selection for downtown
A Vibrant part in the City of Gardens
Good location but poor customer service. Shop regularly with this store. Have been treated poorly few times with difference cashier. I greeted the cashier with no response and no eyes contact of any acknowledgement that I was there. Also throwing my groceries. I won't do a big shopping with this store, because it doesn't worth my support.
I been going there since the grocery store opened. Everything about the store & their products are the best. From the Deli, to the meat department is excellent, my favourite meat, is there Bison meat. Vegetables are superb & fresh. Fresh bread & bakery products. As I mentioned, everything is good. Old Eagle Eyes Andre Motuz
Working conditions are rumoured to be abusive. Hideously overpriced. It seems they take advantage of those who live downtown, knowing that most of them don't have another grocery store close by, so they crank their prices through the roof. Gross.
Great market
Typically has good fresh food and butcher selections. Anything packaged typically comes at a bit of a premium.
I have been shopping at Market On Yates for 14 years. I love the food freshness, the reasonable prices and the friendly employees. The only two set back are that the Market needs more local red meat grass fed at a affordable price. It very important for me that we buy local, more affordable local organic. We have to treat farm animals better.
Love this market! Such a great shopping experience. Has a huge variety but still feels has a market vibe
The freshly made dessert selection is to die for. I often don't leave with what I intended since my eyes sees so many flavors on display. One thing to improve on is the area to snack, enjoy a coffee or microwave a meal. It is very cramped and not private at all for any conversations.
The cashiers are snobs and they have terrible bag packing methods. When I asked for my milk stood up, not laid down under my eggs, the cashier sneered an ugly look at me. Disappointing considering we pay a pretty penny shopping there.
The meat deparetment the staff are friendly and greet you with a smile. The cashiers are very pleasant and very helpful
This smaller than usual grocery store makes up for it's size by offering high quality food and a great selection of specialty items. The produce dept. is clean and well stocked with organics. I personally like the meat department as it offers 'Butcher Shop' quality cuts and an unusual variety of meat. The bakery also has 'off the beaten track' items which are all baked fresh on site. You can also get a great cup of coffee, espresso or cappuccino for a buck.
Good selection of things you can't always find easily elsewhere, and conveniently in town. Bakery is always tempting, but have found quality to be hit and miss. Same with other prepared food items. Have heard it called "Markup on Yates", which is somewhat deserved. I come back for the non essentials.
This place is very convenient. Some things can be a bit expensive but as long as you're buying things that are on sale it's affordable. They have a great selection of hit sauces and Mexican foods. lots of dairy free treats in the freezer section, and often have local produce. Parking can be terrible sometimes, but I'm on foot 95% of the time so it's not usually an issue for me.
After they attacked me last time they must have dropped the charges ,made a formal apology and blessed me with a lifetime "never have to pay" valued customer membership and I redeemed it tonite for the first time on some gummy bears. Thanks again to the staff and owners
Best place downtown area to find higher end or unique grocery items. A bit more expensive than the main grocery store chains but typically the best quality.
Prices are astronomical compared to othwr places. Bakery is amazing after 8pm due to evwrything being half off.
I work close by and shop here often either for a choice for lunch or something to bring home after work for dinner. For lunch, I like the cabbage rolls or the steak and mushroom pie. For dinner, it's a first choice when I'm looking for fresh vegetables. I like the meat choices too. Love the sausages.
This is a premium priced small grocery with some high quality goods in the meat and bakery sections. The produce is hit and miss. I would expect, for example, that there should always be ripe avocados available but not today. It’s a place for frequent visits and small loads so they need to have the goods ready to buy.
I love The Market on Yates. The quality is excellent.
Great store, great selection and unique brands! More like a gourmet shop/normal store. Great produce, fruit was the best I’ve seen! My only complaint is the self checkout is ridiculous. I can’t fit my bag on the scale, so everything gets pulled on the scale then packed. A bit ridiculous, just let me scan and pack it.
Good selection of veggies and cheese and baked goods
I shop here all the time. I love the staff. however, when leaving the store I have people walk into me, yell profanity while they block my path out the door. this happens all the time. I am older and can't move around well. I might have to stop coming here due to the harrasment I get from others. the fruit sometimes is below par, but the staff are the best and its not always a good experience due to the bad people around.
I mostly go here for the butchery section. They can have some pretty decent deals and the sausages are AMAZING! The rest of the store is hit or miss in terms of pricing. They have plenty of specialty brands at a premium cost.
Market has the best produce I’ve ever seen at a grocery store by far. Their baked in house stuff is a step above & great value, and their quality of fish (and probably meats too) is noticeably better as well. Plus when something is on sale it’s often a great deal. Overall I’m a big fan, thank you!
Very glad I found this grocery store! The bakery and deli have amazing food things :-)
Good for grabbing a few things on the way home from work
Fairly expensive, but if you are looking for that one ingredient you can't find anywhere else, or some great pastries, than market on yates is the place. Also this is the place for cheap winter squash for some reason. Can always find the cheapest kabocha here.
The staff are extremely knowledgeable and helpful whenever I go in. Today I had exceptionally great service from John in the meat department. He went out of his way to find the item I was looking for and cut it to my request, which is more then the two butcher shops I went to did. Market may be slightly over priced for some people but you pay for the quality of products and the fantastic service.
Unique selection and good service
Extremely well maintained meat section, lots of interesting dry goods. Very helpful and friendly staff. The produce department can be overpriced but overall I love shopping here :)
Good market. Has everything you need at reasonable prices. Good downtown shopping option. Meat department is well stocked.
Deliberately game me more than double the amount of meat I asked for at the counter. The old lady whispered to the other person to "give me all of it". I've been shopping here over a year, not going back. Root Cellar on Cook is just as close and significantly cheaper and better quality.
Well stocked grocery store with a wide selection of locally sourced fresh produce. Like the neon lights that identify each area of the market
I want the Market to know that their Butcher shop is the best. I was an Oxford Foods shopper for a lot of things, but always....for their meat. My experience there was the in- store butcher shop...and it was my destination for Chicken and other things...at good prices. For example, it's difficult to find two chicken breasts attached from the same bird, but I've found them at the Market on Yates. The flavour and quality were just the same. Super juicy, tons of flavour. Anne helped me at the counter with that and also steak...she's great! So, it may be a little more expensive, but the quality and array is quite something. Thanks..!
Very decent local grocery stop.
Top notch products.
The Market on Yates is a good place to find high quality food at downtown prices. I am particularly find of its gluten free options.
Fancy grocery store. A bit pricy. Some normal priced items. Yuppie goods galore. Genetically superior produce. Can't beat the location, tho.
Great produce, good ethnic ingredients, in-house bakery excellent, this is my absolute favourite for groceries in Victoria
Medium size store, bakery is excellent, with a large variety of baked goods made daily.
They have a self check-out that accepts cash making it much easier than waiting in line.
This is my favourite grocery store in Victoria. It's not a chain, so the products are quite specialised. The bakery section takes the cake!
Parking is tight but it's designed to be a live in town store. Otherwise it's a great store. Not too big. Not too small. Nice variety when it comes to items that the more mainstream stores don't carry.
The location is convenient, and they often carry obscure speciality products ( I actually managed to find Tamarind Concentrate here recently). Moreover, since moving back into town a few years ago, I haven't bought meat anywhere else; until more recently (I'll return to that shortly), the MoY Butcher Counter offered the best balance of value and quality in the city. However, they are VASTLY overpriced in most areas. I purchase produce from Tomley's (on Johnson), deli and pasta from both Italian Food Imports and Chorizo Co, and dry goods/spices etc. from the Bulk Food store on Yates. Soon, I'll start buying meat from the newly opened Cornerstone Meats which is on Quadra at Pandora. The latter sells hormone and antibiotic free (all of their products are H@A free) chicken breasts for around $6/lb... which is $3 less than the price of the MoY's normal chicken breasts. In sum, if you want one-stop, overpriced shopping go here. If you want more reasonable prices (and often better quality) there are superior options.
Market on Yates is Whole food-esque: it's got a lot of good stuff...all of which is outrageously over-priced. This market benefits from being the only full scale market in the vicinity, so if you live in the neighbourhood and don't drive, you may be stuck paying their high, high prices. If you've got the money, though, and you don't mind paying more for high quality, then you'll likely like this market.
Awesome bakery and deli, price is above average but worth it!
Great little grocery store. The meat counter and seafood is fantastic.
They have some pretty good Nanaimo Bars. Had to stock up before heading home.
really great vibe. would shop again or maybe just hang out a bit
Somewhat more expensive than other markets but great produce and stock. Very friendly staff and a company that treats it's employees quite well.
Selection is great but pricing doesn't reflect what I look for in a grocery store which is value. never wowed by anything in the bakery or the deli but never a huge disappointment either.
Good prices but more important is their selection.
Superb quality but you certainly pay for it. This is not the place to do your regular shop for pantry staples but great for those more special items. Their stuffed chicken breasts are great and the bakery is the best grocery store bakery in town.
I'm coming to the market on us for years now and I always enjoyed getting repaired cake but for the past two ones I haven't seen any care cake anymore what's up with that guys?
Personally find it overpriced. While some items understandably come at a premium due to organic labeling etc, I find many items are priced much higher than identical items at other stores.
Good selection of fresh vegetable and fruit produce, organic and otherwise. Clean atmosphere, large selection of healthily nutritious food.
Great little market area in a good location. Some things can be a little pricier than in other places, but overall a great place to grab a few things.
Great downtown grocery store. Good deli and a great bakery.
The market is great ; some items are a little pricey and you can get cheaper elsewhere if you know your prices. To get one night's dinner or for a few days it works. Somewhat lame the checkout girl didn't bag our groceries, thought that was only Superstore. Lots of unique and local items
Nice little spot ! Good deli and a great bakery.
Seems to be well stocked and a good location, at least half the staff are not tuned in to customer service, much better shopping experience at whole foods
It's a very nice, modern market. It is well stocked(they have fresh tarragon) & staff is helpful when you ask.
Good quality products, although every single thing is more expensive than the Save-on 2 blocks away
Good market. There is not much prepared food for travelers as we can see in other cities. But what I bought is good. There are nice desserts. ????
Great grocery store for all tastes! Friendly staff, clean and excellent selections!
I really like this market..there is friendly staff and very fair prices..
Great local food selection. Not the cheapest place in town, but great quality. Cool and quirky.
My favourite grocery store. Great vibes, good selection, amazing bakery - best cheesecake in town
pretty sure the dairy case is haunted.
Good for ordering specific cuts of meat or specialties.
Nice small market that has everything. It's a bit pricey but its convenient. They have a nice deli counter with salads. You can get a good cup of tea or coffee here. Desserts are not the best here. Next door is a small sushi place. Great sushi all freshly made.
Great quality food with friendly staff! Makes you look forward to cooking up a storm! :)
Great gluten free selection, great organic selection, cheap prices, colorful staff. I like this grocery store. They have all the chocolate as well!
Decent local market. Well organized
Very nice community market with competent staff. Certain items are decently priced while other items can be well overpriced. Most things are relatively fresh with a focus on local ingredients which is nice to see. Overall a cute and nice market for your grocery needs.
I've been spending thousands of dollars on this place in the past 3 years. I am one of their most loyal customers. I am a student and know that this store is priced quite high, but it is the most convenient to get to. Today while shopping, I saw they did not have any ripe avocados but they had a few very mushy inedible ones for sale. I brought the only one I could find that looked like maybe half would still be usable (if that) and asked for a discount and they highly refused. This was very disappointing. Charging almost 3 dollars for a rotten avocado is absolute robbery. I have also bought nuts in bulk at full price which I also found to be rancid after I had already mixed them in to granola. Regardless, something needs to change in the way they handle their produce. If they don't want to sell rotten food at lower cost, take it off the shelves. That one avocado will now be thrown out with the countless other rotten ones with zero money to be made. NOT impressed.
Good shopping for good food and munchies. Great deals for a little market.
Incredible high end beef, seafood, sausage, pork, cheese and deli selection with knowlegeable staff. Not a full-service grocery store but more than enough for gourmets and organic fans.
Great organic / vegan selection. Great bakery, deli, and meat departments. A bit pricey, but that's to be expected for a smaller grocery store with downtown rents to pay!
Good, bit pricey. Seem to be out of stock regularly on popular items. Selection is low but what do you expect based on the size of space. Would love to see that corner redeveloped and the store expand, like a Sunterra in Calgary at the Keynote Building.
This is one busy place with a great selection of foods especially the deli. Parking at this location is short of a nightmare. I found the staff to be a little disconcerted and short on being helpful. The prices on most common items are well marked up and it could be an expensive shopping trip.
I am really happy with my experience. The cashier was really friendly and I got great deals on my fresh vegetables. Quality, local products. My salad is delicious!
Great stop for all your food needs. They have a really good selection of vegetarian options too, not just the standard deli isle things.
Great bakery selection! If you are looking for something sweet, and something unique you will find it here! I was delighted to see they also offer “keto friendly” sweets as well. Super friendly staff and a very central location. The deli also has lots of delicious offerings. I was very impressed with their selection!
Better than Save-On foods!
Excellent place- remember to wear a mask please. Places like this are dangerous now. (July)
This little market makes the most delicious sausages you could ask for and always has fresh meat cuts in the butcher area. Organic salad greens, upscale dressings as well as all grocery items. I buy special clamato here as it tastes great and has fewer carbs and sugar like you get now in regular clamato. So you find many gourmet items here. Friendly service and NEVER much of a line to get in. Added bonus of Cobb's bread next door so I buy my fresh loaf after visiting.
The market on yates is almost always a fantastic downtown grocery shopping experience. With the exception of maybe a couple bad seeds and one particularly bad one, they generally have an impressive team of extremely helpful and friendly staff members. The sour apples mostly work at the back in the deli anyways and I have complained although no one contacted me back.
the chocolate section here doesn't mess around
Expensive..bought a juice container that a homeless person had most likely drank out of in store then resealed and put back on shelves.Millstream location is very good.
As a tourist, this was conveniently located and open late with lots of variety.
Great grocery store for unique and high-end natural/organic products. Amazing deli - they make everything in-house, very fresh and innovative. I shop there everyday!
Great local grocery, open late, self checkout is super convenient. they sell ucluelet bars????
Great quality and a few good deals, generally a little pricey.
Produce section is not very fresh, and I find the prices a bit high. Nice selection of products, and it's open late, which is great.
Lots of great food right downtown. Got some amazing BC raspberries here yesterday.
Actually this is a singles pickup place that happens to sell expensive groceries. Good place for fancy bakery dessert items to impress dinner guests.
Pretty good selection of groceries but a little more expensive than other places.
Great store and good variety. Motley looking folk hanging around outside. They started fighting with each other.
Market is set up in such a way it's difficult to find anything you're looking for. Spent a long time wandering aisles trying to figure out the thinking behind how items were categorized. Wondered what kind of pot they were smoking and thought of i had some my shipping might be easier. Otherwise it was a typical yuppie 'make me look like a good ecology and health conscious shopper but don't make me think too hard' type of store. I prefer something that truly is local and sustainable and family oriented. Also as a senior this store makes me feel out of place, out that I'm not part of their targeted demographic, which is weird since we all eat, don't we? ????
Busy and expensive. But good selection and parking. Not the big chains thank god
Really good selection of products, including some European delicacies. Super friendly service! A rare grocery open late till 11 pm in Victoria! Location is a little bit sketchy but a short waking distance from most of the downtown. Great store, recommended!
Good but a little pricey. Love that they are open until 11pm, especially since most stuff started closing early during the pandemic. Generally a good store with some great fish and bakery items.
expensive but value for better quality
Best grocery store ever! I would shop here all of the time if I lived in Victoria. Come for the retro feel, stay for the unique offerings of snacks and treats. I loved that as a celiac I could find a place that had a wide variety of food options for me and that they were open until 11 each evening :)
Over priced trendy foods. What I will give it, the staff is friendly enough and efficient and they do have specialty foods.
Great variety of hard to find items. Best grocery store meat counter in the city.
This store has a great selection of unique groceries but also all of the necessities.
This market rarely disappoints yes there is a premium and they have great sales super convenient location and delivery if you want it ☺️the cashiers are friendly... mostly. The butchers do their best snd the deli staff have the biggest smiles. I avoid wheat so I haven't tried the baked goods the display case certainly looks delicious. There are lots of choices for those of us who avoid wheat and dairy (try bake my Day products) and you just can't beat the island raised rotisserie chicken.
Location and variety, but a lack of organics. This particular marketplace is on a busy corner near the center of Victoria and is thus perfectly placed to meet most everyone's needs. It has everything that a grocery store should: a big bakery, a deli, a large seafood section, florist area, fresh produce zone and even a small café-like sitting area at the front - plus tables all along the sidewalk outside to boot. Prices aren't the greatest, but if you're careful shopper you can easily find the things here that both fit your budget and your palate. I tend to stop here on the way home from work for fresh-roasted chicken, as well as some vegetables or other odds and ends as needed. There's a good variety of foodstuffs here, with all the usual brands as well as some rarer things that you might not find in your typical big-box grocery store. As the organic selections are fairly limited and pricey, I have deducted a star from my overall rating, taking it down from a 4 to a 3, but that's only my own personal opinion of this place - I still shop here on a regular basis, just not for organics. The Market does make some really excellent sandwich trays for reasonable prices. Just like cakes from their bakery, you should ensure that you order at least a day ahead of time, or longer, to be safe. Speaking of bakeries, this location has a great selection of treats on a daily basis, most of which are excellent. I particularly like their peanut butter croissants covered in chocolate, which are a semi-regular thing that I can to stop him to look for... probably too often for my own good. In addition to the regular checkout lanes, there's 4 self-checkout stations, so you'll never really have to wait all that long unless it's a holiday weekend or it's just plain old busy.. I'm usually in and out in less than 10 minutes, including the wait to check out. The shelves are always well stocked and neat, and I Have yet to see any sort of mess in the aisles of any description. The staff seemed to be fairly happy with doing their jobs too, which is also a nice bonus.
Great store, just really small unfortunately. Make sure to shop the flyer.
Good selection of interesting food, prices are higher than other places, produce can be pretty mediocre.
Fresh selection of high end produce! Very friendly service, and always clean and inviting! It's a must!
I got a bbq chicken leg yesterday and as I was eating it i saw it was a bit pink and kept thinking should I be eating this - when I got to the joint it was definitely not cooked properly - it was kind of red and soft - I thought - should I bother taking it back and then I thought - yes - it will help the store out and maybe save someone else from buying it. The guy said I had eaten too much of the chicken and said he would give me $1 - I got upset when he was only offering a loony - to me it was a huge insult. I was trying to help by letting them know their chicken was not cooked enough - Market on Yates does have high prices and I've been paying those high prices since the store opened and management actually has the nerve to offer me $1 on a piece of undercooked chicken - I am an older woman - it's obvious I wasn't just trying to eat something and take it back to get a refund - the chicken wasn't cooked properly. I told him that the Market on Yates would lose between 11 and 16 customers due to the way he handed the situation - he told me I wasn't welcome back at the Market on Yates. I handed the rest of the food I had bought to the cashier and left - I have never been treated like that in a store - I should have been treated as a valued customer. There's a lot of competition in Victoria - Thrifty's are open 24 hours now - I hope the Market on Yates can clear this situation up in a nice way or they will lose a lot of business over $1.68
What I like this about this store is that it contains hard to find or unique items, especially when it comes to sauces and pickled items. Only issue is that all items are more expensive than other stores. Otherwise, it is a good store with good selection.
Good quality but you pay for it
Great selection of eating options from vegan burger , tacos, pastries, and pasta.
This is the best little market in Victoria. They have a great selection of fresh produce and meat and I have never been disappointed with anything I have bought from here. Price for being right downtown is decent. Staff are always friendly and they always have enough staff on to get you through the checkout quickly or of you need to ask a question someone is always near by to assist you and will help you with a friendly smile and great attitude.
Great place, good food amazing staff
AKA 'The Mark-Up on Yates'. Shop here if you like to spend more and get less!
Great selection but be prepared to pay premium prices for premium products. The fish/meat section is what draws me, very high quality proteins. They also have a really nice bakery section with all the treats, cakes, cookies, tarts, squares and slices that you could ask for! The skor cheese cake is a must try. You can also get nice cured meats from the deli. Prosciutto, pancetta, pepperonis, etc. Even cooked chicken breast, meat loaf, etc. The produce is good quality and lots of local stuff. You can get squash from the Saanich peninsula- the best. Also, they label things well so you know what are getting and what you will pay. Overall, this store is a very nice thing to have in down town Victoria.
Great store, great selection and unique brands! More like a gourmet shop/normal store. Great produce, fruit was the best I’ve seen! My only complaint is the self checkout is ridiculous. I can’t fit my bag on the scale, so everything gets pulled on the scale then packed. A bit ridiculous, just let me scan and pack it.
so, I've been shopping here on and off for the last 15 years I've lived in town. they used to have products that you couldn't find elsewhere, a bit more expensive but ok. now the pricing is over the top, and every other store has them beat in every way. the "sale" prices are more than regular prices anywhere else. I got chips on "sale" today...clearly from a box lot sale of non-conforming product, no flavour. my $6 salsa is watery. the bread I got was supposed to be late-nite discounted, nope. "cheese and jalapeño", tastes like plain whole wheat. as if I'm going back during my busy days for $1.25, and they know it. as well, the only employee that acknowledged me was the custodian. everyone including the tellers always look like they'd rather have a hot spoon shoved in their eye than be working. see ya later market on Yates, I'd rather shop at 7-11.
Great selection of local and premium items. Great deli and meat section... Fantastic produce. Prices can be a bit eye watering at times, but if you're looking for organic or alternative brands, this is the place to look.
Service is great but the produce is overpriced and such poor quality sometimes. I don’t normally buy produce there anymore because more times than not, I’ve gone home and cut into lovely looking bell peppers to find them moldy inside. Every single fine-looking avocado I’ve bought there (several) has been rotten on the inside. Perhaps it’s an issue related to the way they store their produce in the back. Whatever it is, it’s consistent. I only go there for produce if something comes up last minute. I live across the street and it’s the most convenient option.
I love this place. It has so many vegan/gluten free options. It's just a classy market too with so many options. I highly recommend shopping there. The prices are good to for the quality product they stock.
Good variety of whole foods. Seafood and local meat selection is fresh and well displayed.
Great little grocery store with a lot of variety of products. Their bakery is especially nice. The parking area is quite horrid however.
This place used to be lit af but I went in the other day to cop some overpriced yogurt and I realized all of it was expired. Like expired for awhile expired. Like expired last month expired.
Recent review (2021): Restored from 1 star to 4 ????. There has been turnover of staff and it has been much better for customer service. Meat department has been wonderful, so has been deli & bakery. Bottle returns are on hold except for Avalon milk bottles during pandemic and there has been no issues since that particular incident. However hesitant to give full 5 due to past incidents. Edit (2019): Demoted rating from 3 to 1 ???? due to one particular staff member giving issues about Avalon milk bottle refunds; she still refused to accept claim bottles even when I got their own kind staff in the back to rinse the bottle thoroughly for me. Lugging around clean bottles in transit to my overtime graveyard shift even after buying another milk bottle is unacceptable! I've been shopping in the store for about 6 years (the store is near my boyfriend's place) and this person knows I am a regular and still gives a hard time. Original review (2017; 3 ????): I've bought bad crab meat that was selected from staff in their seafood department on Christmas Eve 2016; it was an essential ingredient for a dish my boyfriend needed to make. It was too late to return same day because I didn't know it was bad until I unwrapped it in the kitchen and the place closed early due to holiday. However, the supermarket declined to honor the transaction when I returned it unused first thing boxing day and asked for an exchange or refund of said product. That's $15 I never got back, a pound of seafood that went straight into compost, and factoring in original Christmas dinner plans ruined as we had to scrounge an alternative dish to serve to family. I still go there for basic need item only if I'm in the area and forgot to buy elsewhere in an earlier errand. The overall staff are alright but let me tell you if I ever see that person who swindled me in the seafood department...
I love this store. Wish it was bigger. Staff is super friendly and I like it a lot
I visited the place along with my wife after we bought 1lb wheat flour from the BulkBarn, we also wanted to buy black chickpea . We could not find it at Bulkbarn so we decided to buy it from nearby grocery store. Market on yates is just three blocks from BulkBarn so we thought we might find it there. But it was not there too. All the time I and my wife had to carry the 1lb wheat flour bag with us which we purchased from the BulkBarn. When we were walking out of the store, the security lady ask weirded question about where we got this from even though Market on yates does not have the bulk wheat flour. She asked for the receipt but I hadn’t it. However, the bag was from bulk barn and these guys does not have the wheat flour. All the time I noticed that other people also were leaving the store with other bags but nobody were asked questions or bothered. Later, me and my wife had to be there for the “approval” from the store guy who told that “we dont have those with us”. The surprising part is, the wheat flour bag clearly said “Bulkbarn”. Thus, I was surprised to face the element of discrimination at this place where people cant even realise that customers who comes in store can go to other stores too before going there itself. I am thoroughly discouraged to visit Market on Yates anymore. Also, I would never encourage any of my friends to visit it. Thank you for letting us have our “wheat flour”.
Quaint little grocery store. They have everything you could possibly need from a supermarket. Plenty of organic options and farm fresh meats and produce. Check out their bakery and their prepared food section, it makes me drool a bit everytime I walk by
Good shopping, fair prices
I really like this market. Best desserts I’ve found in Victoria, great bakery. Large selection of kombucha and lots of other things. They also carry locally made dumpling drop (try the vegan even if you’re not vegan, they are amazing).
The Market On Yates, my overall favorite downtown grocery store, prices are a bit higher then your average grocery store but they have great sales and very friendly staff.
Great selection, a lot of unique and specialty items. Prices are a little high but it's to be expected at a grocery store downtown.
Great selection and convenient location. My go grocery store as someone who lives downtown
Great selection of organic produce, delicious house made sausages and a wonderful bakery! The only downfall is its a little pricey, but you do have to pay for the convenience of shopping downtown
I love the quality of care I receive. Everytime I am in the store and I spend more than 5 minutes wandering the aisles. One of there staff members or secret shoppers follows me around just to make sure I don't get lost.
I have found staples there to be cheaper. Ak Mak crackers $2 cheaper than at Thrifty's and who doesn't live off those things? Stay away from the rotisserie chicken, make the meat counter your friend because they are so helpful and they have the best chocolate bar of anywhere.
Well, went here to get dinner. Both the Cesar Salad & Meat Pie I bought had gone bad. I've never liked this store because it is so expensive with minimal options. Will definitely not return again. Hopefully Victoria will get some decent grocery stores in the downtown area as there is not a lot to choose from.
Has some niche food but a bit overpriced unless you find sales. There are sometimes cheap deals on meats.
aight
Very good alternative to the big chains. Interesting selection. Fresh.
Great deli and fresh food items. Meat/seafood counter staff is awesome and super helpful!!
Friendly downtown Neighborhood grocery store with lots of healthy and alternative Foods as well as an excellent Deli menu.
Excellent selection of grocery and deli needs, including a variety of vegan options!
Great local grocery store with a great organic selection and its open late!!!
Like a whole foods. More expensive but higher quality goods. Fairly close to downtown victoria. Good selection of products. Open late.
A great spot that gives back to the community
Pretty typical grocery place, looks like they had some neat hot foods. Great for grabbing a few necessities if you live close by.
Not inexpensive, but good selection and service (& best, cheapest coffee machine near exit. $1 Americano!)
Good, bit pricey. Seem to be out of stock regularly on popular items. Selection is low but what do you expect based on the size of space. Would love to see that corner redeveloped and the store expand, like a Sunterra in Calgary at the Keynote Building.
Awesome quality.
I find the sales they consistently have on AAA Beef is my favourite
Still the only place where I can buy that fancy delicious cheese from Quebec, the Full Moon.
A bit pricier than average but good in a pinch. Love the unique look of the store with its bright neon signs and style.
Lots of fresh produce and sandwiches and all sorts of salads! ????
Good selection of fruits and veggies, lots of good pasta (including fresh local pasta), good selection of interesting beverages. Losing stars because of really high prices, especially compared to other grocery stores in Victoria. Great selection but definitely extremely overpriced.
High end downtown grocery store. Meet selection isn't that great, unless you pay for the more expensive versions. Veggies are local which is nice. Expensive compared to similar stores.
Great place for local food, great quality
Sweet. Delicious. Neet, like fishes. Holy turds I've got the squishes.
It's a small market aimed towards high quality with elevated price tag. Produce and deli are the biggest features by far. Lacking good options in many canned goods and household supplies. Some regular products from popular brands end up being overpriced. (sometimes over double the regular price)
I have been shopping here because of the limited other grocery stores within walking distance. They'll be in trouble once the Save-on opens. The Market has a decent selection of products but they are high prices. No bathrooms. Cashiers seem to hate packing my groceries into my backpack.
The biggest grocery store closest to the downtown core. they also have a nice selection of meats and fine baked goods. Prices can be high. I recommend the goat cheese stuffed chicken breast with sausage.
One of my preferred stores for grocery shopping. Great selection of seasonal produce and a lot of basic staples and brands that I regularly purchase. I usually shop the flyer and some of the things on sale are actually very competitively priced.
Market on Yates can be great place to find different items that aren't always available in other more traditional grocery stores. Good selection of quality products. Beware however, they are expensive. You WILL pay a premium price here. If you're trying to stick to a tight budget, be careful. For example, the new vegan CHOU CHEESE from Field Roast, Whole Food Vancouver$7.99, Sidney Natural Foods $9.99, Market on Yates/Millstream $10.99.
Very attractive store..full service butchers meat counter good selection full service bakery dept. Store is busy most of the time but good knowledgable staff..although the prices are on the high side it still represents good value, and downtown location means very convenient
By far the best local grocer in Victoria. I hear a lot of people claiming that they're very expensive but they're no more expensive than other big grocers like Thrifty Foods. I would easily recommend these guys any day – especially over most of the other big grocers.
Good service prices a bit higher
This place has a ton of locally made products as well as products you might have never heard of before. The bakery (all though I've only eaten they're cheese buns) is delicious and they don't put it at the front of the store to grab your attention and try to bait you into buying it. Lastly they're meats section is always reliable and very tasty.
Great place lots of fresh food
A solid grocery store. The meat department is excellent. The deli is ok.
Great bakery, had the white chocolate raspberry cheesecake... Very tasty but it was cooked a little too long there for it was mealy, but still really good.
I LOVE this market, we are there almost daily picking up something or another. There have a great deli, meat counter, bakery, flowers, bulk foods and dairy with lots of vegan choices. The meat counter is full of local products. It is in a great location and friendly, helpful staff.
Excellent range of local food and food from further afield. Convenient parking.
Very good grocery store, bakery, deli.
Great selections higher end prices good store.
It's a bit pricy but the quality is usually pretty good. The bakery is worth the visit. Definitely the go to place downtown.
Good for any grocery you need. Carries alot of local products. A little on the pricey side
I find the produce poor quality for the price. They also are very hit and miss with availability of certain items like ripe avocados and even ready made salads. Thank goodness Save-On-Foods is nearby. Mark UP on Yates???? I only go occasionally and hope what I need is there if I’m in a pinch. Staff are friendly????
They usually have some good and not too expensive fruits there. Some other goods are bit pricey though.
Good selection.
Good selection and reasonable prices. It is a health food store so things may be a little more expensive, but the produce was fresh, I found everything I needed quickly, and the staff was friendly. Plus, this was the only place in town I found my blueberry maple kombucha!
Deli food is very good, a bit expensive but it has a way better variety then going to thriftys.
Excellent grocery store with many different options for food. Great staff, terrific variety, and the butcher shop and Seafood are excellent.
I like the feel of this place, generally has good selection at the butcher and fish monger, my only complaint is a little pricey
The Vanilla Slices are massive mounds of goodness! Theres a nice milky filling and a sweet top They have the best individual cheesecake in town! It's a small circle of paradise????
Nice selection of gluten free products. Some products are pricey though.
Great selection and quality. Parking is very good. Only caveat is moderate-high prices.
My local market. Has a good vibe, good produce. Some things are pretty pricey though.
More expensive than similar stores but great location
Great store. Good deli and a good place to grab a quick lunch or the fixings for dinner.
Great local supermarket, lots of good and fresh choices. Will definetly come back. Thank you
One of the only grocery stores in the downtown area. They have a great variety of local foods.
Prices are a bit higher than other grocery stores, good variety of product, and produce is usually really good as well
I really enjoy the butcher and the produce here - great, fresh, and good quality! But recently I needed to do a shop for regular "inner isle" food items and was completely lost! I understand that you need to give yourself time to learn a new place and its arrangement, but i walked around the whole store, isle by isle, 5 times before I found the won ton wrappers in a side fridge stuffed between completely unrelated items. The organization just didn't make sense to me.
I like this store a lot. They have a great selection and variety of food items. Plus a nice meat and seafood counter. They also play really good music which is important to me. The only reason I gave it 4 stars vs 5 is because it's a bit more expensive than other grocery stores.
Always great meat and seafood but the produce must have been shipped from heaven at those prices!! $2.69 for a single avacado non organic..... really? Feels like whatever veggies are trending seem to get marked up shamelessly. A bottle of Valentina's hot sauce cost less than an avacado....they both came from Mexico and one grew on a tree. Be careful to only pickup your meats and condiments here, walk over to China Town and buy better produce for less.
Small store, but lots of good stuff.
Still a good place, but we liked it better before the update.
Great city centre all round grocery store. Excellent choice of produce though city price often prevails.
My new favorite store after moving to Victoria. The place is open late in the evening and that's fantastic for Fresh Foods and vegetables as well as organic foods and items you might want for cultural Foods. The staff are wonderful and the place is clean and well organized. The prices are fair and you get a great five when entering their building.
Awesome store great selection and good prices
Good quality and selection of goods, but a little bit pricey, especially on a student budget.
Great bakery! The pesto and cream cheese croissants are good! Sometimes the deli has good pre made sandwiches, get the one with the darker pretzel buns if they have it.
Expensive but yummy goods throughout the store. They also have plenty of specialty items which aren't easily found around Vic. Try their desserts they are delicious!
I like this place. It is smaller than competitors but has items the big stores don't, e.g., vinegars, tomato sauces, "certified" organics. The bakery is underwhelming...some good products but expensive. People are nice and friendly. The meat guys will downsell to meet my wants. A great floral department for such a small grocer. Good produce, too. They offer self-check out; that's what I use.
Best downtown Grocery store in Victoria in my opinion. Beautiful produce Dept. . Fantastic selection of Organics , Seafood, Butcher and can find items other grocers don't carry. Watch for their sale flyer !
God quality stuff, but rather expensive
Great selection of local and organic as well as “the other stuff” (aka what my kids prefer to eat. Le sigh.)
Good selection of Nanaimo bar. Friendly staff.
Starting to have more vegan baked goods besides muffins!!! Keep it up
This market was close to our vacation rental so we decided to give it a try. The kebob tasted so good and had lots of flavors. I live in the middle of strawberry farms and so they are always fresh. What I was surprised was that the strawberries were not fresh here at all and so we skipped the fruit/veggie section. They have a nice selection of cheese and pastries. Wow! You can order whatever your mind is thinking.
Cool items and a nice vibe. Very beautiful and clean little grocery store.
Good quality and great assortment of groceries, very expensive though.
Great food, but pricey. Very convenient location.
Extremely high quality! They have everything you would want, as well as having a fantastic meat counter, fish counter, and bakery! Not the cheapest market in town; but worth the visit.
Excellent bakery and good deli. Produce is usually pretty good. Interesting dry goods and bulk section. The prices can be high though.
Good prices, wide variety, and they give many opportunities for youth looking for a job. A good local store.
Love this store!
Great selection of healthy grocery options. There are few things they don't carry that I need to get at Lifestyles or Mother Nature market but pretty comprehensive selection of groceries and health foods. Excellent produce. Good assortment of gluten free and dairy free options. My go to downtown market.
Great selection on plant based cheese
A nice store to check. Good fresh produce with a large variety of items throughout the store.
Expensive. A decent selection of stuff, especially weird hippy/vegan stuff or foreign foods. The premade foods in the deli (sandwiches, salads, etc) are nothing special, and extremely overpriced. The meat dept and bakery are on point tho. Sausages from the former, scones, buns, cakes from the latter. They don't appreciate Seinfeld "muffin top" jokes tho.
Very busy but clean&Friendly'staff
Good downtown grocer with terrific variety and some good deals. Quick check out
I have never called a grocery store fun, but this has a really cool vibe while you shop for food. I b-line to their meat department everytime.
I work right near this market so I have visited quite often over my five year employment at my job. I find the staff here to be nice and helpful when I have needed assistance. I think the top compliment I have for this place is their meats. I have bought regular hamburger meat, chicken, steak and pork chops here and I have always been very pleased with not only the quality and service but also the taste and price. I have found that some things are a bit more expensive than what I would usually pay elsewhere but for the most part there are some nice values to be found here. I'm looking forward to more visits here when I buy dinner after a long day at work.
Well stocked downtown market that packs a surprisingly wide array of products from the upper middle quality range into a relatively small space. Normal prices, meagre sales.
Terrible place and customer service its the worst in town
Didn't have "Dawn Power" dish detergent so I went to my second grocery choice store. I saved over $8.00 on the soap was looking for compared to your price.
ME LIKE STYLISH AND VISUALLY PROVOCATIVE HOMAGES IN MY GROCERY SHOPPING
They have everything you need! Customer service is great! friendly staff except for one unfriendly cashier that seems she has a bad day all the time lols.
Will never return here again. While I prefer to / and generally do support the independents, in this case I’m glad that Save-On Foods has opened downtown as an option. The Market on Yates has gotten away with poor service and ridiculous prices for too long. I’ve rarely encountered employees that are this ill-mannered and unhelpful. Would it hurt to greet a customer at the till, or say something to them at all? And why humiliate those poor souls who enter the store and seek to return empty bottles? Aside from the employees, the prices are inflated, perhaps because of the location. All in all, though ... just not worth another visit.
Due to a lack of other stores downtown, I have been shopping at the Market for years. Their prices are so over the top it is cheaper to take a taxi to any other food market and you will still save money. To give you an example how overpriced it is, they had a bottle of olive oil on “sale” for $15.99, the same olive oil at Costco was $14.99 for TWO BOTTLES!! Very excited about Save on Foods opening in a few months just a few blocks down. One good thing they have going for them, their meat, deli, and bakery have super nice employees who are very helpful and professional.
Good for ready to eat, great bakery, regular groceries as well, good selection - organic to junk food :)
Unfriendly service, high prices, and good luck getting good produce - its frequently over ripe or too green for consumption. The place is convenient though.
They have a ĺot of items that are hard to find elsewhere. The meat and fish section is consistently good with a nice variety of seafood, sausages and marinated/coated/stuffed meats.
Great location, friendly staff, fish smell is heavy but may just be my sensitivity.
Loved this market! Amazing prices and great selections!
Their meats are really good and cheaper!!! Apart from that their regular groceries are way expensive than other shops!! Can't afford
One of my favourite grocery stores. Great organic selection!
Among the great products like fresh produce, seafood and meats, this is the best place to find corn tortillas
Great selection of local and organic quality ingredients! Omg it's so great.
Great market in downtown Victoria. They offer a wide range of products and have speciality aisles with food from around the world. They also offer a good selection of meats and fresh vegetables that you can choose from. The staff are very helpful and quick to point you in the right direction.
I love the market. Local organic meats and unique local items you can't find at a large chain grocery
This is the smaller of the two locations in Victoria but it has a lot of good things. They have the kombucha starter (scoby), they have vegan proteins, very nice in-store bakery. Fresh flowers and lots of potted plants. They have a pretty good selection of your typical health conscious food store variety items - non GMO, eco-friendly, etc... They also have a good amount of free parking for an hour considering their location is downtown-ish. I found what I was looking for so that's always a plus! Their produce section is on fleek! The store is very vibrant and bright!
Great organic section. Gluten free, local & vegan foods
A good quality market. Nice selection of bulk items and ice cream.
A good quality market. Nice selection of bulk items and ice cream.
The Market has very Friendly Employees but I must say as a person on a very fixed income it is really difficult to shop at the Market for more than 1 or 2 items.
They have Beyond Meat burgers in the freezer section now. Good shop, lots of great options and the bakery makes some really tasty stuff!
Avocados are so damn expensive but occasional sale discounts are great
A lovely old-school grocery store with a huge selection! They seem to have a little of everything - especially local, gluten-free and vegetarian/vegan foods. The bakery has so many tempting treats and the floral section is fantastic! The staff is always super friendly and the store, while a bit cramped, is consistently clean and organized. I find it a bit pricey for regular weekly shops, but they have all the specialty things I can't find anywhere else.
great selection just a little pricy but there are other stores that are way worse
Always such good fruit
this is actually a great lil market! Lots of selection ????????
A nice place to shop if you'd got the coin. The buying experience is pretty nice but considering the price premium I'd expect such. Unless you're swimming in it or it's very convenient for you I'd recommend going elsewhere.
I received really unkind customer service in here on New Years Day, after working a service job all day where I tried to make every customers day right. I left shocked that a cashier would be so rude on a holiday. The lady who served me, was purposely rude and avoided eye contact during our brief interaction. I don’t believe she was in a bad mood or having a bad day as I saw her laughing with colleagues as she ignored me waiting to be served. I very much felt I was being treated as a nuisance rather than a customer or even a person. Due to this disappointing interaction I have to question whether Market on Yates encourages its employees to create a welcoming environment. I’m very put off from returning, which is a real shame as I love the products they stock. I’m not usually one for leaving negative reviews and I understand that customer service can be stressful but I left this store genuinely irked by the way I was spoken to. I can only hope that it was a one-off, although if I ever go back I’ll happily be queuing in the self check out lane.
It is soooo over priced but convenient ????♀️
Everything for the modern home downtown. PLUS they carry a variety of no alcohol beer
Nice small grocery store. You definitely pay a premium for their convenient location, but prices are not too crazy.
What a funky upbeat grocery store. Their meat section is amazing lots of beautiful cuts.
Nice well laid out, clean and bright store. Friendly staff but a bit expensive.
the best place to get organic food but you pay alot here
Good selection and convenient location, given there isn't many other options for groceries downtown; however, it's quite pricey compared to other grocery stores
Small grocer but good selection and quality. Fabulous deli, meats and bakery. On the pricey side for being the only full grocer downtown
Visit the meat section best prices on top cuts of meat, I can fill a handbasket 3/4 of the way up on $80 and everything is pre-packaged to my request!
Convenient to stop into. I always expect more ready to eat or pre prepped food for lunch
Nice, clean, great selection and convenient. Great market in downtown location
I have been shopping here for the past two years, with the "Market" being within walking distance..downtown! I have never encountered anything faintly resembling a problem during that time. They offer a wide selection of staples and maintain good and fresh produce, fish, deli, dairy, bakery and specialty sections. Staff are always efficient, helpful and courteous. They open early and close late into the evening. I am hopeful that they will relocate when construction begins in that block. A great place to get your groceries!
What I appreciate about Market on Yates is that it's a great location within easy walking distance of several neighborhoods , and they always seem to have what you're looking for that other places simply don't carry. The hours they're open are great to , fitting people's schedules who may get off work a little later. I definitely prefer shopping here rather than the bigger grocery stores!
Great selection, but does tend to the pricier side. However, when was the last time you were searching for carrot-ginger sauerkraut? The deli counter has a huge selection for lunchtime fare.
It's definitely one of the "trendier" places to shop in town and is always clean and organized. Falls on the pricier side of groceries but is well known for its organic produce and diet restrictions products (vegan/veggie/gluten free).
Bit pricey. Rotisserie chicken from this place are excellent. Deli has good salads.
Would be great if they offered a reward program
Pretty good grocery store wherevthere are not too many other options around. Lots of neat products to buy. The bakery here has lots of tasty treats.
Cute market that seems to have everything. There's a really nice bakery with cakes and Nanaimo bars!
A nice place to grab a quick snack!
The employees are amazing and do a great job. I'm giving this business a low rating because of all the horror stories (backed by evidence) of the management being atrocious and treating its staff poorly. Obviously I'll still come in to get food once in a while, but that's only because I'm a sucker for brie cheese...
I've stopped shopping at the Market on Yates because of the lack of social distancing and the sheer volume of people (and staff) not wearing masks.
Great deli and butcher. A little pricier than some other grocery stores.
Fresh and delicious. Their bakery is amazing. But I come for the amazing hot sauce selection and ghost pepper salsa.
I like the quality of their meat but the staffs are not very friendly. I never see them smile. I don’t feel they appreciate my business. They are making fun talking between staffs but they don’t like talking to customers. Too bad.
This a go to place locals , always fantastic.
Great store also to buy organic foods.
The prices can be a little on the high side, but over all I like this place. In particular, the meat department provides good quality meats especially for those looking for hormone and antibiotic free. One thing that tends to be a problem is the produce. Often it seems to be old and going bad, or just sad looking.
The prices for basics aren't that far off other stores, imo. The prices aren't the problem. The problem with this place is that the employees are unusually awful. If you happen to enjoy being treated with open contempt by a gang of indifferent teenage clowns (actually, let's face it these are probably people in their mid-20s, but these days it's more or less impossible to see the difference), this is the place to go. If it's somehow unavoidable, I recommend the automated checkouts. If it's not unavoidable, I recommend... basically anywhere but the Market on Yates. I've always been treated well at Tomley's, for example. And Bulk Barn. And Wellburn's. And the Quadra Village Fairway's. Lots of options.
Not at all where you want to shop. Deli overprices all there wares and nothing made there actually tastes special.. more like bland. A total rip off. They appear to change staff regularly.. which tells me not a great place to work. If not a great place to work.. NOT A GREAT PLACE TO SHOP!!!! This store has prices more inline with insanity than reality... In final word.. this place needs to close. Old building, would fall in an earthquake.. unfriendly staff, the Manager is a complete Ass. Time for this to close.
Perfect for anything craft :) but minus 1 star for the price
Employee not wearing a mask came up next to me and stood less than a foot away. Other employees walking around with their masks pulled down under their chins. Very stressful.
Excellent range of food and quick service
Such a cool supermarket with a great selection of items. The fresh bakery items are very tasty.
Used to be my go to to market downtown. Overpriced and rude staff. Aggressive security gaurds. Never coming in again
Always fresh
I walk past this place daily, would shop more if they had more vegan options.
Always love a "fill in" shop @ The Market on Yates...Best market in Downtown Vic to be sure!!
I just started shopping here and I love it!!! Bakery and Deli are awesome!!! I love the variety of foods they have here. As well they have a large variety of Vegan foods fresh and frozen which is great. I really appreciate the self checkout which is what I prefer, but you can't bag until your done which is weird as you have to pile everything on a small space. Staff are friendly.
Expensive, small, and they really aren't worth the cost difference. But if you like tossing money away to support a place that hits your pocket book hard have at it.
Loved this place!!! Amazing muffin tops. Excellent quality items. Great staff.
Friendly staff but the place is pricey$$! Great meat counter, deli is so-so...wish they made sandwiches to order...and bring back the Crowe pokey bowls! What I enjoy here is the selection of specialty/small batch and organic things like great creams and soaps, household cleaners, yummy drinks etc.
Without a doubt the most neon-tastic supermarket in the universe - and a decent food selection
Best meat, the butcher is very Good at his job. Prices are bargains everywhere in the store. Fresh everything!!!
Staff are always friendly and helpful. Prices are a bit high for some things. Pretty consistent stock and quality. My biggest complaint is the no tap on the self serve stations....
Friend works there
The service is spectacular, the product selection is unmatched, worth the price.
Went in today to grab a dessert from their bakery. Picked out a sour cherry tart. Turns out it’s mostly dough and 5 scattered cherries... extremely disappointing. Their bakery needs to step up.
Unfriendly and unhelpful (and overpriced). Bought a couple things, wanting change for the bus. Despite having no lines at all, the cashier was unwilling to give any coins (past the necessary 3 from my smallest bill) to me so I could use the bus. (March 1 evening at ~845pm, older lady at a cash register 1-2 away from the self checkout lines).
Very nice and friendly staff all the way around.
I have been shopping for essential groceries at The Market on Yates I recommend this location for the variety to gluten free products. Check out the deluxe deli for lunch or dinner entrees. For your sweet tooth the bakery offers a fresh bakery experience. The organic produce will delight your eyes and taste buds. For those who enjoy fish and meat check out their butcher counter. In the mood to delight someone flowers for you special occasion. Please wear a mask and social distance stay safe.
Great variety of specialty foods, nice produce, lovely meat department. You pay a bit more but selection is different and unique.
Over priced and poor quality
Andrea is best at the till always so nice and friendly
Cashier name ‘Sue' is really not for this job. I am pretty sure self check out machine can make people write better reviews for this place than 'Sue'. I won't write how her attitude was rude, sour, or dull. Please check cameras on Sept 21 around 8:50am how she acts if any of management saw this review.
Great selection of different types of food, and very good quality! Enjoy the selection of prepared local meals, such as the meat pies, the quiche, the sandwiches, etc Staff are usually very helpful and the store is pretty well laid out. The produce and meats are high quality, and if you need to find something, all you have to do is ask.
Top notch customer service!!!! We ordered a gender reveal cake and couldn't have been more happy with how it looked. Unfortunately the sponge was a little dry, we mentioned that to the bakery and they did everything to make it right! I totally understand that no one is perfect and mistakes do happen, its how Market On Yates handled this situation which deserves the 5 star review. On another note, I have never been disappointed with anything from the bakery in years of shopping there, so 1 out of 100 is pretty good in my books.
Anyone who writes this is a great place to shop.. Is telling lies. Everything about this Store is Bad. Its an old building.. they can do whatever to the front of it..its still the same BS. Prices are ridiculous .. not many people seriously go there to shoppe.. an item or two and thats it. Most of produce is rotten, the butcher will gladly give you bad cuts and the cashiers are total berzerk. Deli..cant forget that..LMFAO.. no flavour to none of it. Clerk dropped my purchase on the floor and then gave it to me.. TRUTH!!!! Store needs to go away.........
Good option for groceries in downtown Victoria.
Great local market. They have a great meat counter...we only pay from them.
Great selection bakery & deli are awesome
Within walking distance for a variety of fresh produce And vegan/soy/gluten-free ingredients
Perfect place in downtown to purchase groceries. Prices are a bit higher as compared to Walmart; however, this place is right in the heart of Victoria. Nothing beats convenience of neighbourhood store.
Pricey, but they've got a great selection.
Excellent selection. I do wish, however, that they would stock House of Q products like Market on Millstream does.
Good selection of goods. Prices were high because of location.
Great selections , decent prices , wonderful staff
Most delicious roasted chicken! Forget all the rest. Best local chicken on Vancouver Island! Yum yum ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Great meat counter and bakery! It's a good place to find specialty ingredients. Not well organized, you can spend a lot of time looking for some items and you need to know your prices before you shop here.
I bought some Jack's Meatloaf at the deli and it is nothing more than baked hamburger with bbq sauce. Hardly meatloaf at all and for 9 dollars it's a burn!
For a shopping experience that feels like a small advemture this is it for downtown storeparking isnt as crazy as you would thinkupon enteringyouaregreeted witj warm smiles you will find the store is laid out to makeyour visit an easyfind fof any item . To top it off there is outdoor seatinfor you to enjoy a hot or cold drink or a biteto eat from tje deli
I've been shopping here regularly for more than a year now, more out of necessity than as choice as it's the only store located close to where I live. I see a lot of negative reviews on the customer service, but I can't really comment on this as I always use self-checkout. The vegetable produce is alright, but a bit expensive. One problem I cannot ignore is the meat & seafood. I have given these a try on multiple different occasions and thrown away the food like literally after a single serving. Both the fish and the red meat have a weird funky odour...feels like they've been preserved for weeks at a stretch. Maybe it's my hypersensitive palate... not sure, I've not had this problem from anywhere else. Expensive and substandard quality.
Overpriced. Compare against SaveOnFoods. Convenient downtown location. Helpful staff except:. I arrived @ 10:35 pm with 48 cans with my girlfriend I approached the store clerk (short, blonde, slightly chubby @ the self-serve checkout) & pointed to my girlfriend to indicate that the 48 can redemption was based on both her and me. My girlfriend waved to us to indicate to the attendant that she was with me. The attendant noticed 2 dirty bottles & stated they weren't acceptable. She was merely following proper store policy. I don't fault her. I complied without hesitation. [BTW, the attendant saw all 46 good bottles & directed me to drop them in the appropriate bins.] I approached her to get my $2.30 (less the 10 cents for the dirty bottles). She disrespectfully asked me a 2nd time whether I had put the 2 dirty bottles in the bin. I replied again, "No." She gave me only $1.00 for 46 of my and my girlfriend's bottles. (Just 24 bottles alone required her paying me $1.20!) I informed her that she still owed me money. She gave me only an additional 10 cents! Since I wasn't going to squabble over being shorted a trivial $1.20, I left. But not before being stared at by her. As I was leaving, I ensured that she could see that I was leaving with the 2 dirty bottles in my cardboard flat. On principle, I will visit the store to get the rest of my money or have my 22 bottles/cans returned to me @ approx. 10:30 pm . Yet, overall, except for this instance, I consider Yates Market's customer service as good. All of the aforementioned is recorded and available to management thru its security camera record..
big store . lot of options
Great selection, good prices and accommodating staff. Only downside was the fresh produce wasn't the freshest
I've been a loyal, long time customer of the market and was profiled, and accused of stealing the other day. I walked in like I do (almost) every morning, shopped for what I needed and as I was paying (self check-out) I input an incorrect number for a bulk item and was instantly approached by two managers. I explained what happened (I'd input the number for the bin next to the one I actually wanted) and the result was appalling. I was told that "they didn't buy it" and that "we new when you walked in that you were here to steal something." So not only was I not given the benefit of the doubt, but I was profiled. I said I'd pay the correct amount as it was an accident and was asked not return. I'm hugely disappointed and so are the 50 other people I work which who also shop there on a weekly if not daily basis. I went back the next day to speak with another manager and was brushed off "oh yeah, I heard about you. I'll talk to them." and that was that. There was no apology or acknowledgement that their staff should have handled the situation with tact, kindness and professionalism. Market on Yates, you handled yourself very poorly.
Fresh produce, meats an in-house bakery and a variety of other grocery items. Worth a visit.
The only reason why the have a lot of traffic is because they are the only decent market in downtown area! But, its a very specific market and VERY expensive!!!! For regular grapes I paid $16.
Security at front door is doing a fabulous job of keeping the numbers down in store. Store was clean! Its super busy today
I went in later on thursday night, the guy running the meat counter named Erik admitted that he was just covering and was a bit out of his element... and while I didn't get what I initially had in mind, we talked about it and I left with a great substitute! on top of Erik's friendliness and willingness to talk about recipe tips and tricks to make a better Shepherd's Pie, I left very happy and wanted to leave a great review for Erik!
Market on Yates carries a good variety of items. Essentials like milk, eggs, butter, bread, etc. They also. Arty fruits and vegetables, as well as a good selection of dry products. They also carries fresh seafood and delis. Prices are reasonable.
An awesome fresh food store. Good prices and variety.
Friendly staff and reasonable prices for a local market. Can be very crowded during the day but they always have enough tills to keep the lines moving quickly
A little bit of everything. Great place for shopping. Good choice of food options.
I get threatened outside about one and five times trying to enter the store between 10 and 11 by the methamphetamine addicts in their desperation. Downtown is really becoming unfriendly. And of course, the price gouging is obscene, but that's the case at every grocery store throughout North America. I prefer going away from downtown to shop if the hours are early enough!
Great selection, unique items and wonderful friendly staff! Always a fantastic shopping experience.
Convenient but a bit pricey
Market on Yates is my closest source for groceries. The prices are on the high side but you're paying for convenience. Everywhere else is a bus ride away. Always friendly with an amazing deli section.
I am appalled by the horrific service of staff and poor quality of food. Staff are so dull, i honestly feel bad for people with spirit applying here. Bread i bought was well past its due date, dry and stale. No prices were adjusted, it was sold full price. Meat is not cut fresh it is stacked in slices and you can only imagine how long it sits there for. Management, you have a beautiful location and potential for so much more business. Why are you not taking advantage of this!? Why are you supporting poor quality food and staff? Smarten up. You should have much better sales with much fresher foods for the ridiculous price your charging for crap.
All good but bought a piece of fresh ginger on the bill but didn't get home with it I think still at check out
Knowledge staff and good choice.
The produce, meat counter, and deli counter are the best things about Market on Yates. There is an unfortunate lack of variety when it comes to cheese, and their fresh bread runs out pretty early in the afternoon sometimes. The product made in house from the bakery and the butchery, like their blood pudding, are great.
Been coming here for 5 plus years. Today will be my last visit as they allowed a person who was not wearing a mask in.. I was than yelled at by security saying she had a exemption... She clearly had no conditions for this as once I called her out she laughed at me and called me a sheep. Should have phone police and reported. Still might. Shop online. The fact you allow people who are anti maskers in the store shows what kind of people you truly are. Disgusting.
Yes it is expensive. Yes it has the freshest fish I have found in Victoria. Yes it has the best meat I have found in Victoria. The staff are all knowledgeable "foodies" and all I have talked to go the extra mile if you have a question. If I can't find something elsewhere - they have it. I really like this place. Buy your staples elsewhere to keep costs in line.
Would be nice if they had more fetters on
Good food market with lots of vegetarian foods and a good selection of specialty food items. The produce section is decent with a fairly large organic section. The store is clean and we'll organized. Don't go there if you're looking for the most competitive prices
Since I am found of organic stuff, this was exactly something for me. Nice, kind people, great deals and most of all quality goods.
Good selection and variety. Fresh food galore. Awesome deli food
Great selection found everything plus gummy bears
One of the best place for fresh meat and produce. High quality and good price
Good specials, great variety of specialty items. Generally a bit more expensive than other local grocery stores. But often worth it as their produce, Deli and meat is top quality.
Expensive cause it's a convenience store as well as super market but pretty good quality and decent variety of vegetables and deli foods and they are open till 11 p.m.
Had it with there high prices. Today watermelon bought a watermelon for $16.15. Same watermelon at Save On $8.99. Walmart. $5.99. That's it no more buying there.
Great place for food and more ????❤
Very expensive
Im disapointed in the staff's seemingly irresponsible behavior surrounding the current pandemic. As I was asking a question the employer came extremely close and was breathing in my face... I should not have to ask for my space at this point.
I avoid Market on Yates whenever possible. There's a "no $#!ts given vibe from the staff, the bakery serves things like "cobbler" which are just terrible canned pie filling, I've let them know that a product had gone rancid before the expiry and as expected, they didn't take the rest off the shelf ... and they're not handling Covid19 well at all - not cleaning debit consoles after customer use, not distancing staff from customers well, etc. You know how you can tell when a business has a bad culture top down? When the owners don't care, and subsequently the staff don't care? That's Market on Yates.
Market on Yates is a great grocery store. Yes they are open until 11:00 pm , this is awesome since all of the other stores are closed early.. The people are very helpful and the customer service is exceptional. They go out of their way to help us save money.
Love this little market, definitely expensive though but their meat selection is fantastic and fresh
.Awesome little grocery store store with tons of unique and local options. Not cheap but generally worth the price.
Nice ppl
Independently owned grocery store in downtown Victoria. Easy walking distance if you live in the local area. Offers a variety of both brand names and locally produced products. Home cooked meals and organic products are also avaliable here. Very good meat and produce sections.
Great meat department but a little bit on the expensive end
Good selection. Closest grocery store in walking distance of downtown core
It's got good quality food, very fresh produce & meats. The staff are extremely helpful & it has a relaxed atmosphere. Some of the products are a lot more expensive than elsewhere; but some are at par or a little cheaper. On the whole; good but expensive.
Nice store for fresh produce ..also have special items for meals ..
Great service
I love this trendy market. It has a very historic feel and one of my favorite places down town for browsing shops and getting a quick yet tasty bite to eat at decent prices
Lots of gluten free grocery options. Really good produce selection. Competitive prices. Local business. Supports local food growers and producers
The Best meat deals in the inner city
Wow, I get everything want from here. I am hyderabadi who got settled down here. Best place to buy Indian spices and masalas. Love it here. I do not have to go any where apart form them.
The Markup on Rates. Would be justifiable if they didn't underpay employees. Sit outside sometime on the patio and enjoy watching Market on Yates employees chase down and assault vulnerable homeless people for petty shop lifting. Even call the police like I did and enjoy learning how corrupt and racist this citys pigs are.
Some very good foods available in the Deli section. I highly recommend them.
Good spot with good quality products. Generally the staff is pretty good, excepting a couple of people in the meat department- one guy won't even talk to customers!
They have a good selection of meat and it's all packaged to order. They have a good selection of everything tbh
Good place to shop service is great
Perfectly fine but slightly expensive grocery store, but the reason I'm writing this is because of an employee I just saw there today. He was refilling bulk food bins with his mask pulled down, his face right in the bulk food as he was pouring it, while snacking on the food. Other employees were nearby and nobody said anything. Kind of strange that everyone is required to wear masks now, but this employee apparently is exempt from that also just from safe food handling in general.
I had previously left a 5 star review for this little grocery store as it is right around the corner from my home and we love the products here and meat selection but after the way my partner was treated by the markets awful security the other night, I will no longer support this business. Medical mask exemptions SHOULD be honoured in store like all of the other grocery stores, but at this location they are not. In fact, the security worker lied to me about what the exemption was on the bc gov website, I (wearing a mask) went to my car and got the print out from the BC gov website and work BC, stating ALL exemptions, proving him wrong and he said well I will not let you in here. I stated we spend a minimum of $500 per week at this specific location and if he does not allow us in to shop and honour my partners mask exemption, the market will be losing our business and we will be sharing our experience online and to friends and family. He replied, “ Oh good! Goodbye!”. As someone who owns and operates a local business, I would never, ever, allow one of my customers to be treated this way. We would love to support this local store but not at a place that discriminates and adds to segregation.
The store is, in general, well laid out but that's about it. The bakery and meat departments are as expensive as it gets. The staff behind those counters however, are usually always pleasant . The other sections could learn from their example. I strongly sense that a good portion of the staff doesn't seem to enjoy working at this location. It's not the greatest of neighbourhoods, but it could be because of management and minimum wage. I've shopped here uncountable times since it's opening to give this review my honest of opinions. During this pandemic, one would think to have one door to enter and the other existing and mechanically sound door, to exit but they don't. That might be due to having only one security guard. Maybe they can't afford the extra guard. Maybe the don't care.
Great bakery. Wish they had a better selection of plain old sandwiches to grab For lunch, most of theirs were on out of the ordinary breads or croissants.
Great place
Pretty good place to shop. Much cheaper than other stores for some products and a lot more expensive for others.
As visitors from US, this store has so much options with quality foods. If we were local, we would shop here. Took us a while to decide which muffin to get. The produce, meat, seafoods look so fresh. It reminds me of upscaled whole foods, with neighborly feels.
Super expensive but the selection and staff are amazing
Good little local market, but some items overpriced but its downtown VVictoriaso you pay for the convenience.
Very handy market , very clean , very polite and helpful staff.
Lots of unique foods that are hard to find at other grocery stores. I love the bakery. Some stuff can be pretty pricy though.
Pretty solid market, it is a little expensive and every time there is something on sale they never order enough and are consistently sold out, come on guys, just order more
A bit pricey but always fresh meat.
The only good thing is its central downtown location. Otherwise, it is expensive and has a small selection of items.
Too expensive, even for the island. They have some good deli selections and easy to cook options for meat and fish
I had purchased the pumpkin pies at the bakery dept and when I got home and sliced it, there was a dead spider inside!! It was a whole spider too not just it's leg or body! It was disgusting and scared the jeepers out of me. I''m never coming here ever again, nor would I recommend it to anyone. Be careful what you buy here. Plus, the customer service is rude and pathetic. The place needs to hire workers who can actually provide good service, including the security guard.
Decent grocery if you're rich. Produce prices are way too high. Hell, everything is priced too high - the meat counter has skimpy organic selections, but they charge organic prices for most of their meat anyway. Even their specials aren't that great. Be careful ordering anything from the bakery counter. The employees' brains are usually on auto-pilot and they will frequently give you something other than what you asked for unless you watch them carefully. How hard is it to grab the right muffin and stick it into a bag? And the checkout can be a train wreck. Sometimes the credit/debit scanner doesn't work. Sometimes the product scanner doesn't work. More often than not, I end up wishing I'd gone to Wellburn's.
Clean friendly staff
Great selection, nice staff. Somewhat pricey.
Great and convenient spot downtown, but way too pricey with other competitors around.
Great little grocery store, lots to choose from, friendly and helpful staff
Good selection of things that you can't find elsewhere. It's really just the markup on Yates though. the prices are insane!
I usually really enjoy the market grocery stores but I had the most unpleasant encounter with one of the cashiers yesterday. She didn't want to accept the payment I was giving her and was rude to my friend and I from start to finish. I have worked in customer service and this encounter came off a tad racist and just rude.
Extremely expensive for most everything. Multiple times now over the last months I have gotten dairy products that seem to not have been stored properly because even though they are well before the expiration date, I'll get home after shopping, open then, and they have mold growing inside....
Not cheap prices very expensive for groceries
Good selection of organic items, but it's very pricey
Wide variety of quality meats and seafood, decent delicatessen, fruit & veg reasonably priced for the season and location.
It's a market some will like it some won't
