Ive been going to this market for yeas, but lately, they seemed to have gone to the dark side.
Yesterday, I grabbed two plastic bags and placed peppers from a very very large basket into the bags. I had a knapsack a small basket and it wouldnt fit in my basket. That’s when the the Wicked Witch of the East swooped in to rant on about how the bags cost 10 cents each, and when I told her that I couldnt carry that large basket of peppers around with me (I would usually bring something really large to the front counter but there were at least 8 people at each of the four or five counters.) she indignantly stated that I should have used a push cart.
I went back a few weeks later to talk to the manager, turns out she is the owner. No sooner had I started to explain being chased and attacked for using plastic bags then the owner start telling me that people are using plastic bags all the time, blah blah blah...
I then realized that the problem—as it most often is—starts with the CEO, the COO, or the owner, in this case, of a vegetable market. The problem is always at the top. Here I was thinking that some staff person was having a bad day but I quickly realized that it’s the owner setting these guidelines, telling staff its okay to chase customers around...
I would just hope that if someone saw someone struggling carrying a heavy basket and they were trying to lighten their load by moving vegetables from one larger basket into smaller bags, they might actually offer to help that person.
