Small and reasonably priced. They have a surprising selection especially of "international" ingredients that are difficult to find elsewhere. I used to go to the big box stores but now it's my go to store that's just around the corner.

I went here a few years ago, wasn't impressed. Prices were always great but the store wasn't doing it for me so I got caught in the zhers trap and have been over paying for a while. Went back today and WOW! This store has gone through a transformation! It was clean and has a great floor plan, no more cramped entryway, very organized and a great selections. I will definitely be driving the extra few kms to buy groceries from here from now on!

My go to grocery store, as its a rocks throw from my home. Great prices and watch the flyers there are always good deals. Early mornings and late evenings are great times to go because the lines are short. Staff are friendly and if you go there a lot they remember you and say hi!

I understand the pandemic. I've been shopping here for over a year now. But this whole process of waiting for someone to finish bagging before they start ringing up is beyond frustrating. There has to be a better way of lineups- every time it's just a conglomeration of carts and bodies all struggling to form a line. Hand hold us a little and tell us where to form a line and have someone direct it. Times are tough and covids thrown everyone for a curve. But I think having shoppers all jam packed is worse than it was before. I'm by no means someone that's worked grocery and I don't see your financials but it's one more body during the day. It would likely take a considerable amount of pressure off of your staff as well as clients by having more forced hand-holding. It takes so long to get checked out now I stopped shopping here :(

I am new to the area and have gone shopping at this Food Basics a handful of times. Each time I have gone they have been out of one or two basic items I went for. When it happens once it’s a coincidence, twice it’s a happenstance, three times it’s a pattern. I’ll try them again, as it’s super convenient location for me, but I don’t want to have to return the next day for something I need.

Ok prices but they are often out of or lacking one produce item or another. It is close to my home but I make the longer drive to No Frills where I can get even better prices and PC products. I do not like the dairy brand (milk, sour cream, etc.) that food basics offers as I find the quality is often lacking. Overall clean store if you have no produce/brand preferences.

On multiple occasions months apart, I've seen (and accidentally bought) goods that are well past due (talking a month or more here). Last month I went and most of their packages of tortillas were blatantly moldy, as well as some of the grapes they were selling. I also regularly see frozen vegetables with rips in the packaging. Produce in general isn't the freshest either. The rest of the store is satisfactory though. Fairly well stocked, prices are good.

Good place to grab the odd dry goods, produce is usually picked over and not as fresh as it could be. Location is convenient for people in south Barrie, Thornton, Utopia and Ivy. The parking lot gets a little hectic with the amount of cars and the other businesses.

My husband just informed me that he went to Food Basics for some salad. They've reduced their hours to 8 to 8 and open only 5 days a week. There was only one cashier with a line up around the store. How is this helping social distancing with everyone in one line up? This also causes people to buy more and hoard items and empty shelves, which we should be avoiding. Wouldn't it be better to have more staff, more hours to get people in and out as quickly as possible and keep things as normal as possible. This doesn't even deserve one star. Use some common sense.

Food Basics at Essa Road in one of my top 3 grocery stores. Can’t beat the deals on regularly used/consumed items! Not only is it a great store, but their Manager Richard is a gem! I called asking whether I could obtain some moving boxes. Richard said sure, he would keep them for me and not crush them for the recycling. What a stand up guy. It was MUCH appreciated. This is not my first experience with Manager Richard. Years back I left my wallet behind in the basket of my shopping cart. One of the “cart boys” found it and turned it in. Richard then proceeded to notify my banking institution to contact me regarding the lost wallet. I was so grateful to have my wallet back with cash still inside! Good people at this Food Basics location. Saddens me to be moving away from it. God Bless.

When I went there no carts were available so the lady at the door asked the gentleman to please get some more carts. He made it quite clear he was mad about it. It is his job and as a customer I didn't need to see that. Also when asking a worker if they had any mushrooms he said rudely I don't know I am in the meat department not the vegetable department. When I found the man from vegetable department he was very helpful. I know everyone is under stress because of covid but we are still paying customers that need to be treated better as we are stressed as well. I probably won't go back there again.

Customers can be super ignorant and dismissive of the cashiers hard work in this fast paced environment. Sad to see how rude people can be these days. These cashiers are just kids and do not get paid enough for the lack of respect they receive. I came in the other day and was extremely disappointed to see customers making cashiers feel guilty for something they cannot control like the length of the lines. Keep up the good work cashiers!

Be careful of the vegetables you buy. Bought a few bags of potatoes with rotten ones on the bottom. The bell peppers looked great on the outside but were all mouldy inside. And there were a lot of fruit flies.

2021 December (5/5): Was in and out of here quickly, they have new self-check outs which are really quick...store is clean, no complaints at all this time... November 2020 update (1/5): they got new debit/credit machines in about a year earlier (maybe more, maybe less, cannot remember, I only am here during cottage season), they have never worked in terms of tap which is a BIG issue in relation to covid IMO. Have asked about it and have gotten rude responses at times from their cashiers. Basically I am told it is the fault of my cardS yet my cardS work at EVERY every other store at every other machine outside of THIS location of FOODS BASICS I have ever tried. Maybe it is that till, nope tried other tills at this store. Get better customer service, get better tap machines (especially in light of covid), until then you are not getting a penny of the $1500 I spend on groceries a month... 2017 (5/5): Could have more selection but the prices here are really great! Hwy 400 was a mess recently (Sept 2017) so booted down Essa to 27 and saw this place so figured would check it out, actually had some really good deals and the produce is excellent quality, will return...also love the fact that no money is required for a cart, big plus on that option here too...

I always have a good experience when I go there. Food is fresh and good prices. Staff is helpful. I use the pharmacy there and they are great. My prescriptions are always ready every month I don't even have to call just go pick them up. I think overall the store is great and clean as well.

This is an good store don't get me wrong. It's a food basics so I can't give it a 5 like I would a Loblaws or a Nandos. You get the basics and it's for the most part clean as it is busy store. Usually there is no real wait times as it is adequately staffed imo. Pretty sure some of the staff are frustrated sometimes and they make it kind of obvious and I find sometimes rude but this would not be the norm. Overall it has what you need and it's basic. Don't be looking for Loblaws quality store here but it will do

I was shocked and surprised you dont have an electric cart for people with mobility issues. I'm sorry but for as long as I've been a loyal shopper I will no longer be able to shop at food basics. I shop at this food basics all the time the staff are very friendly and always smiling. Today I went shopping and lost my phone when I went in I spoke with a cash manager who checked the cameras without hesitation she was very concerned as I told her all my ID was in my phone case. She apologized and I went out to look in the carts and still could not find it. A couple hours later my husband called the store and he was informed that the manager was on his way to my house to drop off my phone as he got my address from my drivers license. I am so grateful the manager went out of his way to drive to my house to drop it off he went above and beyond. Amazing staff !

BEWARE OF WRONGLY PLACED "SALE" ITEMS, LIKE THEIR VIVA PUFFS COOKIES ..... THEY THREW A BOXFULL OF THEM ON TOP OF A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BRAND (THAT REALLY WAS, ON SALE). WHEN YOU GET YOUR BILL, THE PRICE IS WRONG. IT'S HIGHER. YOU BRING THIS STOCKING MISTAKE TO THEIR ATTENTION (CARL), AND AS A REWARD, YOU ONLY GET THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO PRICES. SOME CREDIT SHOULD BE GIVEN THE ONE, WHO INFORMS THE STORE OF THEIR MISTAKE. UNLESS, THE STORE IS OKAY WITH RIPPING PEOPLE OFF, AND/OR DEALING WITH CUSTOMERS RETURNING THE ITEM AT CUSTOMER SERVICE - ONE BY ONE. They had a single express checkout lane and five self checkouts open today. With a line up of about a dozen customers. I don't understand why companies feel that these self checkouts are an acceptable replacement for actual staff, when you have a couple hundred dollars worth of groceries and are forced to self check them them the inconvenience quickly becomes apparent. Especially when a good portion of your purchases are not bar-coded, vegetables and fruit. I suppose they're trying to save a few bucks by installing these self checkouts, but it's a self defeating process, as I'm now much more likely to not even bother, and go get my fresh groceries from a smaller market that is more likely to employ a human staff. Three stars because the quality of the veggies is pretty good.

Would not recommend... I am overcharged on groceries every single time I am there. When I complain, they tell me the product is now free but they charge me double instead. Also, when an item is on sale, you can be guaranteed they are out of stock! This has been a problem for more than six years. I only shop at Food Basics because it is local. I now pay more for groceries but at least I only pay once for it and it is always on stock.

This store is long established in the community. With great prices, good parking, amazing produce and especially the kind staff. This food basics is the whole package.

This store has low prices, but I noticed they had many missing shelf labels, staff avoided eye contact, the customers were nice, but the in-store employee culture appears to be suffering from a more online based shopping industry. I suggest management tough it out, put on a smile, say hello, and your employees will follow suit.

I'm pretty mixed about this store. Some prices were good, some higher than I'm used to. The produce was in really poor shape, but lots of variety. The store was very messy in parts. Worse than any store I'm used to. There's lots of International food selection, which is a huge plus. Lots of gluten free, dairy free and sugar free variety which is great. I will shop here again for certain things, but definitely far from best grocery store in Barrie.
